Juventus (4-2-3-1) Michele Di Gregorio – 7 Despite conceding three goals, he was head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. This could have been a routing if it wasn’t for his saves. Timothy Weah – 6 The American certainly took his shot well to score an equalizer from long-range, but his mediocre defending skills were constantly exposed by Noa Lang. Federico Gatti – 6 The Italian defender was superb in the early going, but was slow to react on the second goal and then messed up on the third. But at least he fought hard for the cause. Renato Veiga – N/A The Chelsea loanee left the pitch early with a knock. Lloyd Kelly – 5 The Englishman was switched from left-back to the heart of the defence following Veiga’s injury. Should have done better on the second ball, and almost caused more problems with his poor passing. Manuel Locatelli – 6 ............ Teun Koopmeiners – 5 Another anonymous display from the big summer signing who was hardly influential on either phase of the match. Francisco Conceicao – 6 The diminutive winger seemed to be the biggest attacking threat Juventus had to offer, but Thiago Motta decided to haul him off in the middle of the second half, much to PSV’s relief. Weston McKennie – 5.5 ............ Nicolas Gonzalez – 5.5 ............ Randal Kolo Muani – 5 The Frenchman had a few inviting chances to score that went begging. Juventus will certainly rue his misses. Substitutes Andrea Cambiaso – 5.5 ............ Kenan Yildiz – 5.5 The teenager tried to play the savior’s role but saw very little of the ball. Khephren Thuram – 6 The Frenchman was one of the few Juventus players who caused problems for PSV in the final third, but he couldn’t put his shot on target after storming into the box. Nicolo Savona – 5.5 ............ Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5 The Serbian had little to no service but came close to scoring on one occasion. Samuel Mbangula – 5 ............ . Tim Weah cancelled out the Ivan Perisic opener in Eindhoven, but Ismael Saibari forced extra time, where Ryan Flamingo prodded home from point-blank range on a set play situation for 3-1 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate. “We struggled in the second half, had equalised in such an important moment for us and we were not capable of holding on to it,” Thiago Motta said. “It was under control in the first half, it’s true that they pushed harder, while we hit the woodwork. We knew PSV were a quality side who push and attack, but we suffered a lot here. “We cannot be happy with the two goals we conceded, especially with predictable changes of play and Bakayoko allowed to control the ball in our area. We must do much better if we want to compete at this level. ............ “Koop had a fever yesterday and this morning, so he asked to come off. We moved Andrea into midfield with Khephren, but then Cambiaso too had to come off because he’d been out for a while and was not feeling good. All three substitutions were forced.” As Juventus were looking visibly off the pace in the second half, why did Thiago Motta not make changes earlier? “I don’t believe I was late in my changes. Before the opening goal, I wanted to give a bit more energy to the squad, but then we equalised and that was a moment we had to calm things down and retain the balance. I believe I made my changes at the right time.” Juventus had never previously been eliminated in the Champions League after winning the first leg, going through in the previous 11 occasions. Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven had not won a Champions League knockout tie since 2006-07 against Arsenal. Locatelli told Amazon Prime Video Italia that Juventus “threw the qualification away,” but Thiago Motta did not agree with his own captain. ............ “We did not throw anything away. We tried to the end, but we ultimately weren’t stronger over the whole match, so PSV deserved to go through.” All three Italian teams in the play-offs were eliminated, arguably by weaker opposition on paper, as Milan lost to Feyenoord, Atalanta to Club Brugge and Juventus to PSV Eindhoven. ............ . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 21 Juventus 1 (3) - PSV Eindhoven 3 (4): Initial reaction and random observations On Wednesday night, Juventus got what they deserved. Despite a 2-1 advantage on aggregate. Despite another long-distance belter from one of their Americans to put them ahead on aggregate. Despite actually heading to the Netherlands with their first notable winning streak of the season. Despite all of that, Juve got what they deserved at the Philips Stadion. And that was to get bounced from the Champions League. Juventus’ performance against PSV Eindhoven was very much a continuation of how the first leg in Turin went eight days ago. But the difference this time is that there was no late heroics to find some sort of escape. Instead, PSV — who entered the decisive second leg with just one win in their last five — was able to flip the aggregate scoreline in their favor and oust Juventus from the Champions League with a 3-1 on the night and 4-3 over the two legs. The one thing that Juve couldn’t afford to do — you know, actually lose Wednesday night — was what ended up playing out and now it’s another hit to a season in which qualifying for the UCL Round of 16 was one of the biggest goals the club had. Instead, they’re out one step short of that. ............ PSV were better on this night. There is no question about that. They dominated much of the second half and extra time before setting up shop and daring Juventus to try and score on them. As much as Juve had their chances in extra time — and they did whether it was Dusan Vlahovic (nice to see you again!) or Khephren Thuram — the only reason why the scoreline wasn’t more in PSV’s favor was thanks to a couple of brilliant saves from Michele Di Gregorio. But, by then, PSV was fully in control and Juve were essentially just hanging on for dear life. But then the ball pinged off Federico Gatti’s foot as he attempted to apparently control the ball right in front of Di Gregorio when he should have instead tried to simply just clear it if at all possible. The result? PSV taking the lead once and for all — something that was about as deserved as anything to happen on this night. Juventus’ defense faltered either thanks to individual errors or just being torn apart by PSV on the counter. The squad’s overall inexperience showed. Their manager’s inexperience on the sideline in these types of situations showed. Thiago Motta way too long to make the triple sub that brought on a whole new double pivot even though one of those “midfielders” was actually Andrea Cambiaso, who came on just 10 minutes in after Renato Veiga was forced off injured. ............ This Champions League campaign began with quite the high-energy return to Europe with a win over this same PSV side. Five months later, it all came to an end in Eindhoven — a result, a performance and overall UCL showing that will leave a whole lot to be desired no matter how you look at it as time goes on. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS ............ Juventus didn’t even need to win. Seeing the 1,500th draw of the 2024-25 season would have been just fine no matter how they got there. But nope, that wasn’t possible. Prayer circle for Renato Veiga and whatever kind of muscle injury that forced him off after 10 minutes. Who knows if it’s a calf strain or something else, but I’m guessing just how pissed off he looked as he walked down into the tunnel was how a lot of us felt watching from afar. Just another injury to add to the lengthy list of injuries at the back. ............ Motta said that Teun Koopmeiners was playing with a fever — which makes sense considering that the Dutchman’s return to his home country was rather tame. I would also like it if Koopmeiners also got some sort of break health-wise to go his way because this feels like the third or fourth time that he’s dealt with some sort of illness ever since he signed with Juventus. ............ Still not convinced by Lloyd Kelly. He did some good things once he kicked into the center of Juve’s defense for Veiga, but there’s still a whole lot to be desired for a player who is probably going to be playing a lot the next couple of weeks. (And subsequently seeing that obligation to buy kick in for much more than he’s probably worth.) That being said, Gatti and Kelly combined for 25 clearances. That’s a lot. ............ Randal Kolo Muani only had eight touches in the first half, yet within those touches were a couple of very good scoring chances. Funny how this game goes sometimes, ain’t it? Who led Juventus with four tackles in the first half? Of course it was Francisco Conceição, known defensive workhorse out on the wings. ............ I still don’t know why Motta waited so long to make his change in midfield. Even with Timothy Weah scoring when he did, it’s not like Juve were playing well before that. Just make the change right then and there after the goal. Try and lock things up and not even risk PSV ramping things back up against a tiring defense and midfield. Instead, that big swing came right after PSV tied things up on aggregate. Frustrating. I really don’t know how Nicolo Savona didn’t see red for that tackle attempt. It was bad. ............ PSV xG in the second half: 1.55. Juventus xG in the entire game: 1.67. ............ Journalist Fabio Russo identifies five tactical blunders Motta commited during the contest. First of all, the source notes how PSV are excellent at going forward, but can be shaky at the back. Therefore, Juventus would have probably found success had they been more adventurous, but instead decided to sit back and invite their opponents into their own area. ............ Russo also wondered why Motta didn’t start with Yildiz who should have been fresh after only featuring for a cameo against Inter on Sunday. He also decided to drop Khephren Thuram in favour of Teun Koopmeiners who had a fever by his own admission. ............ On another note, the journalist blames the Juventus technical staff for the players’ athletic condition, as they failed to keep up with PSV’s pace in the second half. Moreover, Russo suggests Veiga’s playing time could have been managed better, as his constant appearances may have played a role in his injury. Finally, the columnist notes the Bianconeri remain psychologically feeble as they once again squandered the lead, so he believes Motta has so far failed to insert mental toughness within the team. . After the contest, Motta admitted PSV was the better side on the night, but disagreed with Manuel Locatelli who suggested their opponents wanted it more. For his part, Di Canio wasn’t impressed with the 42-year-old’s game management. The Juventus coach was preparing a couple of substitutions (Mbangula and Thuram) but changed his mind when Timothy Weah gave the Old Lady the lead on aggregate. But afterwards, PSV managed to score once more. ............ “PSV gave Juventus a football lesson. The Dutch dominated and deserved to advance to the next round,” said Di Canio during his post-match appearance. “Thiago Motta was confused. Our teams are not used to this kind of pressure. “I liked the Bianconeri in the first 45 minutes; they pressed a lot, keeping PSV far from Di Gregorio’s goal. But fatigue started to show at the beginning of the second half,” continued the ex-Bianconeri boss. “Juve had spent a lot of energy, and just ten minutes after the break, they already seemed to be running on empty. Perhaps Thiago Motta could have acted sooner with the substitutions. He spent almost 10 minutes discussing with his assistant before making changes.” ............ “Juve’s main issues were in midfield when the team was no longer able to press, allowing the Dutch side more space,” he noted. “That’s why Motta should have made changes earlier, perhaps bringing in Thuram to freshen up the midfield.” ............ . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 21 Is Douglas Luiz fit enough to play for Juventus against Cagliari? Douglas Luiz has been sidelined for Juventus’ last two games due to injury, and the Brazilian midfielder is working hard to recover and return to action as soon as possible. Despite Juventus having a squad full of talented players who are fit and ready to play, Luiz’s absence has been felt. He had just begun to settle into the team and show his quality before injury struck, and his potential remains a key asset for the club. ............ While Juventus has been content with the overall performance of the team, their recent exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSV has left a sense of urgency around their next match against Cagliari. The fans are eager for a return to winning ways, but it seems unlikely that Juventus will rush Luiz back into the starting XI for this crucial game, given the uncertainty surrounding his fitness. ............ Luiz’s fitness remains a concern, with the midfielder training away from the rest of the squad in the latest session. This suggests that his recovery is still in progress, and it may take some time before he is ready to play again. Juventus must be careful not to rush Luiz back too quickly, as pushing him into action before he is fully healed could risk aggravating his injury and leading to a longer spell on the sidelines. ............ . The Bianconeri seemed to have finally hit some top form, with four consecutive wins making the fans dream of a team that can win some trophies this term. However, the men in black and white have since disappointed, bringing back the bad and worrying feeling to the club. They are rebuilding, and at the rebuilding stage of any team, mistakes would be made, and the learning curve could be steep. ............ Juve has the players to play any game plan, and there is no need for their stars to have an inferiority complex of any kind. This is because they play for the biggest Italian football club, and most earn far more than their peers at other clubs. Because the team’s average age is as low as 25, the Bianconeri do not have a problem with physical strength. ............ However, where Juve needs to grow is the psychological aspect of their game, as they have simply not been good enough. Players need their minds as much as their bodies to play and win games, and the current Juve squad struggles with its identity. At the moment, they simply do not have the mindset of a team that can beat anyone, which is a surprise because they ought to have that. ............ Motta’s team looks ordinary in most of their matches, and many of their victories have lacked the conviction to show that they have what it takes to win some trophies for the club. These players have to improve their mindsets and awaken to the fact that they are in one of the biggest football clubs in the world. . The team has benefited from the return of some important players in recent weeks, but fresh concerns have now emerged. Savona will not be available for selection after suffering a muscle problem in his thigh. This is a significant blow, as the defender has proven himself to be a reliable option in recent matches, even when deployed at left-back, a position that is not his natural role. Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 22 Preview: Cagliari vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups One of three Italian teams dumped out of Europe in midweek, Juventus must get back to Serie A duty on Sunday evening, when their quest for a top-four finish takes them to Cagliari. Juve's defeat in the Champions League playoffs marked a new low for the fallen giants, and they now need more points in pursuit of returning to UEFA's top competition. Match preview Any joy from last week's Derby d'Italia win over Inter Milan was short-lived for Juventus, as the Turin side then slumped out of the Champions League on Wednesday. ............ Motta had seen his team win four games on the spin to start February in fine style, but now they must quickly recover and go again on the domestic front. Sitting fourth in the standings - vying with Lazio, AC Milan, Bologna and Fiorentina for a cherished top-four finish - Juve will try to record consecutive Serie A away wins for the first time this season, before tackling Empoli in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. Having previously posted five straight wins over Cagliari, the sides have drawn their last two league meetings - though Juventus were 4-0 winners when they most recently convened, in a mid-December cup tie. ............ Team News Juventus received another blow after their early European exit in midweek, as Chelsea loanee Renato Veiga sustained a tendon injury and will be sidelined on Sunday. The visitors' defensive department is already missing Bremer and Juan Cabal - both of whom are out of action for the long term - while Pierre Kalulu is still unavailable and Andrea Cambiaso has just returned from an ankle problem. Along with the latter, misfiring midfielder Teun Koopmeiners was replaced during Juve's loss to PSV, but he should recover from illness in time to make the trip south to Sardinia. Douglas Luiz could also be called up, after recovering from his latest muscular issue. With top scorer Dusan Vlahovic out of favour, the Bianconeri's attack should be led by Randal Kolo Muani, who is the first Juventus player for 13 years to score or assist at least one goal in each of his first four league appearances. ............ Cagliari possible starting lineup: Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Luperto, Augello; Zortea, Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, Felici; Piccoli Juventus possible starting lineup: Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; Kolo Muani We say: Cagliari 0-1 Juventus While Juventus will still be licking their wounds from Wednesday, they can come away from a tough away fixture with maximum points. The home team are just five points clear of the drop zone, and they will look to maintain that buffer. Meanwhile, the Old Lady need to keep winning to stay inside the top four. ............ The visitors have slowly climbed up to fourth on the table with 46 points in their 25 outings. While they have only lost once, Juventus have played out 13 draws, which has not helped their cause. Since suffering their only league defeat at the hands of Napoli, the Turin-based outfit have won each of their last three league games. While the Bianconeri are ten points behind the league leaders, they still have an outside chance. But, they are heading into this fixture on the back of a 3-1 thrashing against PSV that knocked them out of the UEFA Champions League. The Hard Tackle takes a close look at both teams and tries to predict the tactics they could deploy. Team News & Tactics Cagliari ............ Probable Lineup (4-5-1): Caprile; Zappa, Mina, Luperto, Augello; Zortea, Adopo, Makoumbou, Marin, Felici; Piccoli Juventus Juventus suffered a massive blow in their UEFA Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven as Chelsea loanee Renato Veiga suffered a tendon injury, which will keep him out for a while. He joins Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, and Pierre Kalulu on the sidelines. The Old Lady do have a boost ahead of this fixture as Andrea Cambiaso, Teun Koopmeiners, and Douglas Luiz are back in the mix. The visitors will line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, where Michele Di Gregorio will take charge in goal. Nicola Savona and Andrea Cambiaso will be the full-backs, while the highly sought-after Federico Gatti will start alongside Lloyd Kelly at the heart of the defence. In the centre of the park, Teun Koopmeiners will form the double pivot alongside Khephren Thuram. They will look to shield the backline and control the tempo of the game. Weston McKennie could take up the no. 10 role, with Francisco Conceicao and Kenan Yildiz taking charge on the flanks. Randal Kolo Muani should lead the line for Juventus against Cagliari on Sunday. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Thuram, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, McKennie, Yildiz; Kolo Muani Key Stats After a run of four straight wins to start February, Juventus crumbled against PSV in the UEFA Champions League. The Old Lady will be looking to record consecutive away wins in the league for the first time this season when they take on Cagliari. The last two league meetings between Juventus and Cagliari have ended in a draw. The home team have only won one out of their last 26 league games against Juventus since 2010. Davide Nicola’s team will be eyeing consecutive home wins in the league, something they have not been able to manage since the end of 2023. Player to Watch Kenan Yildiz ........... Prediction Cagliari 1-3 Juventus Cagliari have a very poor head-to-head record against Juventus. While they have managed to hold them onto a draw in their last two meetings, the home team have only won one out of the last 26 meetings. The Old Lady might be heading into this one on the back of a defeat against PSV Eindhoven, but they have been in decent form in Serie A and should not have much difficulty in getting the desired result here. Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 22 Cagliari vs. Juventus match preview It’s the game after the disappointing elimination from Europe. A couple of years ago it was being ousted from the Champions League and Europa League. Before that, there were UCL knockout round elimination at the hands of Villareal. Before that, there was the two-legged disappointments against Porto and Lyon. But it’s all ended the same way — and Juve’s European run leaves us wondering how this team will try and get things back on track. ............ So now, here we are again. He we are at the game after the game in which Juventus were eliminated from Europe, this time at the hands of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League play-off round. Just four days after the loss in the Netherlands, Juve head to Sardinia to face relegation-threatened Cagliari, who are one of the many teams toward the bottom of the Serie A table to have taken points off Thiago Motta’s squad earlier this season. Sunday night’s matchup feels like it has potential scenarios: it’s a sort of soft landing after a brutal Champions League exit or it proves to be the classic post-UCL hangover in which Juve drops points against a team they have no business dropping points against. But Juve enter this trip to Cagliari in quite the delicate frame of mind. Their manager, rightfully, is under serious heat — at least from those outside of Continassa — for what happened earlier in the week in the Netherlands. A squad bereft of big-name leadership is now looking to bounce back against a team it has already dropped points against this season. And, most of all, they have taken another big-time hit to their ship during a season in which nothing has been done easy or really felt all that certain other than the feeling of uncertainty and inconsistency. ............ With Lazio dropping points for the second straight weekend, Juventus can take over fourth place all to themselves with a win over a Cagliari side that was very much sitting just outside the relegation zone until a win over Parma and scoreless draw with Atalanta last weekend. And with the Champions League elimination, finishing in the top four in Serie A — since the dings to the UEFA coefficient over the last week are a huge dent in Italy getting a fifth UCL spot next season — is even more of a focus than it has been all season. There are 13 games to go in this Serie A season. That comes out to 39 points to be had. The way this season has gone for Motta and Co., the likelihood of getting a point total in the mid- or high-30s seems far from a possibility. There’s still big matchups against Atalanta, Fiorentina and Lazio — all direct rivals for a place in the top four — still out there over the next few weeks and months before the season ends in late May. ............ TEAM NEWS The injury news coming out of the loss to PSV Eindhoven: Renato Veiga will miss at least a couple of weeks with what has been described as “an injury to the tendon of the plantar gracilis of his right leg.” Other than the three-long term injury absences, the only other injured player not called up to face Cagliari is Pierre Kalulu. That injury list is one name shorter because Douglas Luiz is back after missing the last couple of weeks due to muscle fatigue. Motta will have more natural fullbacks (3) available to him than center backs (2) against Cagliari. That seems less than ideal. ............ Motta said “there is a chance” Dusan Vlahovic gets a start against Cagliari, even teasing that the big Serbian striker could play alongside Randal Kolo Muani at some point. Vlahovic hasn’t started a game since Jan. 29 against Benfica, with Kolo Muani starting every Serie A game since he signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. Even though we have yet to see Alberto Costa play a minute for Juventus, Motta says the young Portuguese fullback “has been doing well in training.” ............ Andrea Cambiaso is the only Juventus player who is one yellow card away from having to serve a one-game suspension. This will be the first time that Vlahovic has started in the league this calendar year. His last start came on December 29 in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina. He missed the next two through injury, was reintroduced as a substitute in the next few matches, but has ultimately lost his starting place to Kolo Muani since his arrival from PSG on January 23. ............ . The Bianconeri will likely be physically and mentally drained after being eliminated from the Champions League play-off round at the hands of PSV Eindhoven, so Thiago Motta could be set to make some changes to his starting lineup. ............ Michele Di Gregorio will start between the sticks once more, while the makeshift backline will comprise Timothy Weah, Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly and the returning Andrea Cambiaso. In the middle of the park, Teun Koopmeiners should be dropped in favour of Khephren Thuram who would connect with Manual Locatelli in the double pivot, while Weston McKennie is set to maintain his role further up the pitch. Francisco Conceicao is also expected to hold on to his role on the right wing, but Nico Gonzalez could make way on the opposite flank. But rather than Kenan Yildiz, Samuel Mbangula should get the nod. Finally, Dusan Vlahovic is tipped to make his return to the starting lineup after being benched for the last six fixtures. The Serbian hit the post during his cameo against PSV, which could be enough to convince Motta. This would also be an opportunity to give Randal Kolo Muani some well-deserved rest. ............ Juventus Probable XI (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Weah, Gatti, Kelly, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, McKennie, Mbangula (Gonzalez); Vlahovic (Kolo Muani). . This contest will also feature several interesting matches within the match, so let’s take a closer look at three interesting duels expected to take ensue this evening. Antoine Makoumbou vs Weston McKennie With Weston McKennie expected to start in the middle of the park in front of Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli, we can envision a physical contest to ensue, especially between the American and Antonio Makoumbou who will be shielding the backline. ............ Gabriele Zappa vs Samuel Mbangula This will be an interesting one between two exciting wide players. Gabriele Zappa is beginning to fulfil the promise he showed earlier in his career, emerging as a complete full-back. On the other hand, Samuel Mbangula could earn the nod at the expense of Nico Gonzalez and Kenan Yildiz. ............ Yerry Mina vs Dusan Vlahovic This will certainly be the most intriguing one, at least if Thiago Motta opts to start with Dusan Vlahovic. Many of you would remember how Yerry Mina resorted to all sorts of Dark Arts to put the Serbian off his game, including pushing, shoving and even mocking the striker after missing a sitter. ............ . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 24 Vlahovic strikes as Juventus secure hard-fought 1-0 win over Cagliari Juventus earned an important 1-0 win against Cagliari this evening, thanks to a Dusan Vlahovic goal. Juventus began the game like a team that needed a win after being dumped out of the Champions League. Juve wanted to get back to winning, and they dominated the opening exchanges, which resulted in them scoring the opener after 12 minutes. Dusan Vlahovic was back in the starting lineup, and he bagged the opener for the hosts, who had struggled in recent games before now. After scoring, the Bianconeri continued to dominate the fixture. ............ However, after the break, the home side began to ask more questions of the Juve defence than they did during the first period. Juventus had some chances to break, but they could not find that second goal as they prioritised a solid defensive structure to protect their lead. ............ When Juve had a good chance to extend their lead, DV9 was pushed and misplaced his shot, but a penalty was not given. ............ . That’s where he must improve. Lowest Juventus rating: Conceiçao 5.5 – The Portuguese made just 42 touches and never created a numerical advantage down the right flank. Just one (failed) dribble attempt. Juventus coach: Motta 6 – A positive first half from the Bianconeri, but they should have scored more than once. Bit of suffering after the break, but they managed to keep Cagliari players far from Di Gregorio’s goal. A crucial win in the race for the top four. . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 24 Thiago Motta: ‘Juventus suffered after missed chances, Yildiz enormous potential’ Thiago Motta is glad Juventus managed to beat Cagliari despite ‘wasting so many chances and inevitably suffering’ after the break, but outlines the ‘enormous potential’ of Kenan Yildiz. ............ Dusan Vlahovic celebrating his first Serie A start of 2025 by pouncing on the Yerry Mina error to score from the tightest of angles. After wasting chances to kill off the game, including with Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao, Juve suffered after the break and held on for the 1-0 win. “Kenan Yildiz has enormous potential, physicality, technique, he’s a hard worker, puts the effort in to help defensively, he can create important situations taking men on, he certainly needs to improve his finishing as we saw again this evening,” Thiago Motta said. ............ “We had so many chances in the first half, we went into the break knowing that it would be a problem not finishing it off and inevitably we then suffered. ............” continued Thiago Motta. “Maybe we lacked sharpness, because we only played extra time three days ago. When you have a first half like that, you need to score more than one goal. The positive at least is that we were able to keep the clean sheet.” Turkey international coach Vincenzo Montella was in the DAZN studio, so the first topic of discussion was inevitably Kenan Yildiz. “We often talk about Yildiz and both agree he needs to attack the space more,” added Thiago Motta. “It is something he needs to improve, because he has enormous potential and also the physical strength to repeatedly make those runs back and forth. He can hit the ball hard too with a great shot that is tough for goalkeepers to predict. We need to keep pushing him, because he is of a high level and can certainly improve more.” ............ “We have to take it one game at a time, especially now that we are getting into the crunch period of the season, it is a very balanced league and we’ve seen the top teams struggle this weekend too. ............ . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 24 Juventus 1 - Cagliari 0: Initial reaction and random observations As Juventus walked off the field at halftime Sunday night, I will fully admit I had the thought that you probably had, too. It involved seeing how many chances Juve created, how many they actually scored and the fact that this team has not exactly shown defending a lead to be their strong suit. “I sure hope this doesn’t come back to bite them,” tumbled across my tired brain a couple of times as the 15-minute halftime break rolled on. That dominant first half certainly wasn’t replicated after the break. But thankfully, those thoughts of adding to Juventus’ massive amount of dropped points from a winning position didn’t actually come to fruition. The feeling of impending doom as a result of Juventus’ second-half performance and inability to add onto their lead before the break was never fully fulfilled. Instead, Juventus made Dusan Vlahovic’s goal all of 12 minutes stand the rest of the way to claim a huge 1-0 win over Cagliari, one of the many lower-table clubs they dropped points against in the first half of the season. With all of the other madness going on in Serie A this weekend, it meant hat Thiago Motta’s squad jumped over Lazio and now have a two-point advantage in fourth place. But that’s not all: Juve’s win, somehow considering the astonishing 13 draws so far this season, moved them within eight points of the new Serie A leaders, Inter, who leapfrogged Napoli this weekend. To go overboard on potential Scudetto talks certainly feels very premature. But the fact that Juventus got the chance to get an advantage on Lazio — and, let’s not forget, Fiorentina and AC Milan who both lost this weekend — is what is the most important thing here. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS Methinks Dusan Vlahovic likes scoring goals against Cagliari. I say that because his first-half strike was the ninth goal in 12 games against Cagliari. That finish from Vlahovic was not easy considering the angle it was at and the way his weight was shifting. Just had enough speed on the ball to get it across the goal line. Thank goodness. ............ Juventus finished with 70 percent possession in the first half. So close to being very nice. Juventus finished with an xG total of 1.77 in the first half. We’ve seen plenty of games this season in which they don’t even hit that total over the course of an entire 90 minutes. Manuel Locatelli touched the ball 81 times and completed 72 passes IN THE FIRST HALF. That’s wild. ............ Solid game from Lloyd Kelly. If only that happened in the Champions League! Let the terzino-ing of Timothy Weah continue to be positive because we all know Juve desperately need it these days. It’s the 62nd minute and Douglas Luiz is subbed on. It’s the 82nd minuted and Douglas Luiz is subbed off. Yep, it appears Douglas Luiz is hurt again, folks. It’s a transfer that just hasn’t worked out and at this point you have to seriously considering that it will be one and done in Turin for Douglas Luiz (and Alisha Lehmann with how little she’s played for Juventus Women). If Andrea Cambiaso is going to miss any sort of time after coming off injured that means the only natural fullbacks Motta will have at his disposal over the next couple of weeks are a recent Next Gen grad (Jonas Rouhi) and a January signing who has yet to make his Juventus debut (Alberto Costa). Good times. ............ Yildiz, the young man who actually did lead Juve in tackles, admitted after the game that he should have scored a couple of goals against Cagliari. And you know what? He ain’t wrong. Imagine the scope of this one if Yildiz had scored either of those big chances he had, let alone both of them. The second half would have felt completely different. By the way, Yildiz has not scored a goal since Juve’s draw with Torino on Jan. 11. That’s something that I think a lot of us would like to see change soon. ............ We got to see Vlahovic and Randal Kolo Muani play off each other for the first extended amount of minutes. There were some good moments of it even with all of the tough moments that came with Juve’s second-half performance. But it will be interesting to see just how often Motta goes with it now that he’s actually tested it out. ............ Honestly, just glad Juventus won and didn’t give up any goals in the process. A win and a clean sheet is always nice to see. Although it wasn’t the most dynamic display, his early goal was worth three important points, as it was the solitary strike of the contest held at the Sardegna Arena. After the match, Vlahovic insisted that the most important thing was to earn the win rather than him scoring a goal. “The three points are important, I scored a goal, but it’s important to have won,” said the former Fiorentina in his post-match interview. “I’m living with great calmness, I’m a professional, I make myself available to the team: I know that so much is expected of me. I stay composed. If we want to grow as a team and reach certain goals, we can’t stay under pressure for the whole second half. “Everyone suffers here against a team that plays well at home, but we have to take the extra step. Manage the game better or put it to bed earlier. I am very happy and I am thinking about the next match.” ............ “I’ve done this celebration before. Basketball was a dedication to the physiotherapists, we have one thing in common, they asked me to celebrate in this fashion.” ............ . Socrates 8614 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 135101 messaggi Inviato February 24 The latest updates on Cambiaso & Douglas Luiz: Optimism and despair Juventus have reportedly received encouraging updates regarding the condition of Andrea Cambiaso, but Douglas Luiz may have suffered another serious injury. Both players returned took part in Sunday night’s Serie A contest against Cagliari which ended with a slim win for the Old Lady courtesy of Dusan Vlahovic’s solitary strike. However, the duo were forced to leave the pitch in the second half while carrying knocks. Cambiaso was in the starting lineup for the first time in weeks having been hampered by an ankle problem. But while his ankle didn’t bother him this time, it was a groin issue that ended his night relatively early, with Jonas Rouhi coming in as a replacement. As for Luiz, he made his return from a slight muscular problem that saw him miss the last couple of fixtures. He came in for Teun Koopmeiners in the second half, only to vacate his place for Samuel Mbangula in the final minutes of the fixture. ............ Earlier today, Juventus released an official statement revealing that Nicolo Savona (who remained in Turin after picking up an injury in training) suffered a muscle overstretch and is now expected to miss a couple of weeks of action. ............ Cambiaso’s condition doesn’t even require medical check-ups. He is expected to return to the fold in the next few days, so he could theoretically feature in the Coppa Italia quarter-final contest against Empoli. But on the contrary, the Brazilian midfielder has seemingly suffered yet another injury. He has already missed several months of action this term. ............ .
