Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 12 Juventus 1 - Torino 1: Initial reaction and random observations Not even Douglas Luiz’s new hair color could save Juve from recording yet another draw in Serie A. Well, at least Juventus didn’t blow their lead late this time around. The problem was, Juve’s lead went up in smoke early enough — although not exactly well-timed when it comes to going into the halftime break with some good feelings about things — where there was plenty of time left to actually do something about it. Yet, after weathering an early second-half storm Saturday night, Juventus couldn’t convert all the chances that they did actually create. ............ That all concluded in Juventus recording a 1-1 draw against their city rivals in the second Derby della Mole of the season and officially hitting the midway point of the 2024-25 season with 12 draws in their opening 19 games. That’s right, people: With 50% of their league fixtures played — although technically not one game played against each of their 19 opponents in Serie A — Juventus have recorded a draw in 63% of those matchups. ............ It feels like we’re just in this same vicious cycle at the moment — get a lead, give up the lead and then try and scramble to get a go-ahead goal late. For as good as Kenan Yildiz’s opener was, the ability to hold onto the lead wasn’t. Torino’s goal felt almost inevitable — both because of how poorly Juve’s been holding onto leads lately and just how well those in granata were playing after falling behind. It’s not the first time that things have trended that kind of way when Thiago Motta’s side took a 1-0 lead, and you get the feeling it won’t be the last until something actually falls into place. ............ Thirteen shots and eight saves by Torino keeper Vanja Milinković-Savić in the second half alone and not one goal actually came out of it. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS It’s now been seven league fixtures since Juventus last recorded a clean sheet. Ironically, one of Juventus’ last shutouts came against Torino two months ago before the November international break. I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve seen both managers sent off at the same time, let alone in the same game. You see something new every time you watch sports, I guess. ............ Yildiz isn’t scoring a ton of goals this season — this goal was his first against Serie A opposition since the first Derby della Mole back in November — but a lot of them sure are pretty special. We’re still a few months away from him no longer being a teenager, so it sure is quite fun to think about what kind of player he can be once he enters his 20s. ............ On the whole, the Gonzalez as false nine experiment went a little bit better than it has in previous games. At the very least he was usually passing it to his teammates, which is something Dusan Vlahovic has been struggling with as of late. For a guy who has barely played over the last couple of months and was making his first start since mid-October, I gotta say, Douglas Luiz did a pretty solid job. Maybe not overly outstanding, but sure wasn’t the train wreck that some of his appearances have been so far this season. Who led Juventus in key passes? That would be Douglas Luiz. ............ Who led Juventus in tackles? That would be a certain Kenan Yildiz. ............ So for a team that has 12 draws in 19 games, what are the odds of another draw against Atalanta on Tuesday? Let’s just say that even as the unbeaten run domestically to begin the Motta era continues, the odds of a draw are probably better than those for a win. In their derby against Torino this evening, the Bianconeri had been expected to bounce back after their loss to AC Milan, but they failed to secure a win, leaving their supporters disappointed. ............ Koopmeiners, who played a pivotal role in the midfield, acknowledged the team’s struggles and emphasised the need for improvement. “We controlled the game, we scored a great goal with Yildiz and it is not possible to concede a draw at the end of the first half. We have to take responsibility. Me included, I have to do better. There are many things that we do well, but we don’t do them for the whole 90 minutes. We have a lot to learn, the quality is there, we can all play in this team,” he said. ............ The midfielder’s words reflect the broader frustration within the squad, as Juventus continues to drop points in key fixtures. With the quality in the squad evident, the challenge now is to maintain that performance throughout the entire match. If they fail to convert their dominance into consistent results, Juventus risks falling further behind in the Serie A standings and could struggle to even secure a Champions League place by the end of the season. ............ . Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 13 Preview: Atalanta BC vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups Aiming to stay within close range of the Serie A summit, Atalanta BC will host a misfiring Juventus side on Tuesday evening. Both beaten in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-finals before resuming league duty with a disappointing draw, the clubs convene for a midweek clash in Bergamo. Match preview ............ Ahead of hosting title rivals Napoli next weekend, Gasperini's men will try to post a 15th straight Serie A match without defeat when meeting Juventus. Meanwhile, Juve can head for Bergamo having finished the first half of their Serie A season unbeaten - yet, head coach Thiago Motta finds himself under serious pressure. Days after losing to Milan in the Supercoppa semi-finals, the Bianconeri's boss was sent off during a derby draw with Torino that left his side stranded outside Italy's top four. ............ Juventus have now drawn five of their last six league games, continuing a trend that undermined the Turin club throughout 2024 - long before Motta was appointed. While, in other circumstances, a share of the spoils would be an entirely acceptable outcome on Tuesday, maximum points will be demanded by Juve's increasingly frustrated fanbase. Motta's men must reconvene with Milan next weekend, before facing Club Brugge in the Champions League and then visiting Napoli, so the next fortnight will certainly put them to the test. Team News Atalanta's top scorer Mateo Retegui returned to training last week, and after missing Saturday's goalless draw in Udine, he may be back in the hosts' squad to play Juventus. ............ Meanwhile, Thiago Motta - who must serve a touchline ban - will hope to have both Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceicao back in the fold following muscular injuries. Arkadiusz Milik, Juan Cabal and Bremer are all out for the long term, while veteran defender Danilo is negotiating an early end to his contract. With the presence of Vlahovic still in some doubt, Nico Gonzalez is on standby to operate as a false nine again; in midfield, Manuel Locatelli's return from suspension should see Douglas Luiz drop back down to the bench. Atalanta BC possible starting lineup: Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; Pasalic; Lookman, De Ketelaere Juventus possible starting lineup: Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, McKennie; Locatelli, Thuram; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Weah; Gonzalez We say: Atalanta BC 0-0 Juventus Although both sides boast plenty of attacking talent, it could be an intense tactical battle between Thiago Motta and Gian Piero Gasperini, who are well acquainted from their Genoa days. Master meets apprentice in Bergamo, and Gasp's men should add to Motta's frustration by playing out a close-fought draw. . On Monday, Motta addressed the media in his customary pre-match press conference, and he insisted that he and his men are the first to be irritated by the club’s current status. “We certainly made mistakes, because in many games we could have won but we didn’t,” said the 42-year-old. “We are the first to be angry because we always want to win. Now we have to recover the points that we left behind.” ............ “Nothing strange about Koop. He’s the player and the person I expected. He’s a guy who transmits a lot in everyday life and helps his teammates. He puts himself in difficulty for his teammates and he does it because he feels it and wants to win. Tomorrow he returns to a place where he did well and won a lot. It will be a special match. “We don’t have Bremer, Cabal, Conceicao and Milik, but we’ll see how Dusan will cope later in training, he is not yet 100%.” ............ “Kenan is doing very well on the right wing, as he did on the left. He also did well in the middle against Cagliari in the Coppa Italia. He is a boy who is growing very quickly. ............ “We chose to leave Douglas deep to free up Thuram more. Comparing the managers, Capello drew an interesting parallel with Formula 1 drivers. “Gasperini is Hamilton, Thiago Motta is still Leclerc,” he stated, suggesting that Gasperini’s experience gives him an edge over the younger Motta. When asked about similarities between the two coaches, Capello noted, “Only their decisiveness.” ............ Capello offered advice for Motta, saying, “I would tell him one thing: don’t just think about one idea of football and adapt to the players you have in the squad to enhance their characteristics. This applies to all coaches, not just those leading Juventus.” On the upcoming match, Capello expects an “extremely interesting” game without a clear favorite. He noted Atalanta’s recent dip in form, stating, “Atalanta of the last period is not the pre-Christmas one: in recent matches, they have played below rhythm, the aggressiveness is not the usual.” ............ The Bergamo side went to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana and were knocked out of the mini-tournament by Inter Milan in the semi-finals. ............ Meanwhile, Juventus head to Bergamo hoping to bring some consistency to their game and secure wins. The Bianconeri endured yet another frustrating draw, their 12th of the current Serie A campaign. While they are still the only team in the league with an unbeaten status, Thiago Motta is already under severe pressure. Juventus were also part of the mini-tournament in Saudi Arabia, and they were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champions AC Milan. Following their return to Italy, one might have assumed the Bianconeri would have registered a straightforward victory over Turin rivals Torino; instead, the neighbours produced a performance that frustrated Motta’s men. An early Kenan Yildiz strike seemed to give Juventus some much-needed momentum in the Derby della Mole, but a late strike from Nikola Vlasic brought the hosts back into the game. Having endured yet another frustrating result, the hopes of Juventus mounting a title challenge are all but over, and Motta’s team will have to find form to sustain a top-four challenge from here onwards. Team News & Tactics Atalanta ............ Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; Pasalic; De Ketelaere, Lookman Juventus Thiago Motta will serve a touchline ban for this clash, and in the background, he must deal with some injury issues as well as naming his most competitive lineup for the Atalanta clash. There are big doubts regarding key attackers Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceicao, with both suffering from muscular issues. There is a liklihood for the duo to start on the bench for this visit to Bergamo. Arkadiusz Milik, Juan Cabal and Gleison Bremer are the long-term absentees, and Motta still has a thin setup at the back. There is talk of a move for Ronald Araujo; however, for now, he has to deal with the present options in the backline. Nicolo Savona and Weston McKennie are expected to feature in the full-back roles, while the returning Manuel Locatelli should replace Douglas Luiz in one of the central midfield positions. Khephren Thuram will keep his place in the middle of the park, while Teun Koopmeiners should reprise the No.10 role. Kenan Yildiz will once again start on the right wing to accommodate Timothy Weah on the left side, while Nico Gonzalez will play like a false-nine in the expected absence of Vlahovic. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, McKennie; Locatelli, Thuram; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Weah; Gonzalez Key Stats Atalanta are undefeated in their last 14 matches in Serie A. Atalanta are winless in their last three games across all competitions. Juventus are undefeated in their last 27 matches in Serie A. Juventus are undefeated in 19 of their last 21 away matches against Atalanta in all competitions. Player to Watch Ademola Lookman ............ Prediction Atalanta 1-1 Juventus It is a tough game on all corners for both these teams and had Atalanta continued their stellar form coming into this one, they would have been favourites to clinch all three points. Instead, they have struggled in the absence of Mateo Retegui to produce the magic in the attack, which will be a source of concern for Gian Piero Gasperini before they clash with Juventus. The Bianconeri remain one of the premium defensive units in Serie A, and once again, they will make it difficult for Atalanta to pass through them. Thiago Motta’s men are desperate to win games consistently, and this could lead to another frustrating outing. Our prediction points towards an eventful draw in Bergamo. . Both teams, coming off disappointing results in their recent outings, will be eager to reignite their respective campaigns in this high-stakes matchup. ............ Juventus, on the other hand, are experiencing a peculiar season under Thiago Motta. While the Bianconeri remain unbeaten in Serie A, their campaign has been marred by an extraordinary number of draws – 12 in total. Their recent form mirrors this trend, with five draws in their last six league games. The Turin giants are currently outside the top four, a position that has put significant pressure on Motta, who was recently sent off during a derby draw with Torino. This match promises to be an intriguing tactical duel between Gasperini and Motta, two coaches with a shared history from their time at Genoa. Gasperini’s Atalanta are known for their high-intensity, attacking football, while Motta has instilled a more possession-based approach at Juventus. ............ Juventus, despite their struggles, possess quality throughout their squad. Their ability to control the tempo of the game through midfield will be crucial, with Locatelli’s return potentially key to their strategy. The midfield battle between Atalanta’s De Roon and Ederson against Juventus’ Locatelli and Thuram could determine the flow of the game. Additionally, the performance of Juventus’ defense against Atalanta’s dynamic attack will be pivotal. Team News ............ Juventus face their own injury woes, with uncertainties surrounding the availability of key players Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceicao. Long-term absentees include Arkadiusz Milik, Juan Cabal, and Bremer. Manuel Locatelli’s return from suspension provides a boost to the midfield. If Vlahovic is unavailable, Nico Gonzalez may once again be deployed as a false nine in a probable 4-2-3-1 setup. Expected Starting XIs Atalanta: Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; Pasalic; Lookman, De Ketelaere Juventus: Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, McKennie; Locatelli, Thuram; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Weah; Gonzalez Match Prediction With both teams desperate for a positive result, this match could be a tense and closely fought affair. Atalanta’s home advantage and recent history of strong performances against top teams make them slight favorites. However, Juventus’ unbeaten record in the league suggests they cannot be underestimated. Prediction: Atalanta 1-1 Juventus . Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 14 Atalanta vs. Juventus match preview Through the first two games of 2025, things certainly are looking a lot like 2024 for Thiago Motta and Juventus — and that is not a development in a good kind of way. Even without taking what happened in the Supercoppa into account, Juve’s first Serie A fixture of the new year, the second Derby della Mole of the 2024-25 season, had a whole lot of the same trends that we’ve seen over the past couple of months as the draws started to become more and more common. Not only was Saturday’s result with Torino the 12th draw Juventus recorded in their opening 19 league fixtures, but also pushed the amount of points Motta’s squad have dropped from a winning position up to 12. ............ So now, with just a couple of days of rest, Juventus are now set to face the one team that they have yet to play domestically so far this season. It’s a trip to Bergamo and the Gewiss Stadium for Motta’s squad, as Juventus will face an Atalanta side that themselves have a small case of the draws of late that have seen them fall off the pace with league leaders Napoli and Inter Milan. ............ Or, we can just have somebody who will be playing his first game back in Bergamo since his summer move to Juventus what’s been going wrong. “We lack a bit of everything,” Juve midfielder Teun Koopmeiners said after the Torino draw. ............ Juventus are one of only two teams in Europe’s top five leagues to have a double-digit total of draws so far this season. (Brighton, who have 10 draws in 20 games, are the other.) With Saturday’s draw, they finished the first half of a season with their worst points total in 14 years. ............ TEAM NEWS Thanks to the red card he was shown in the Derby della Mole over the weekend, Thiago Motta will be suspended for the trip to Bergamo. That means, just like it was a little over a month ago, it will be Alexandre Hugeux time on the Juve sideline. Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceição have not recovered in time to face Atalanta and will miss their second and third straight games, respectively, due to injury. The other injuries are the long-term absences: Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal and Arek Milik. After serving his yellow card accumulation suspension over the weekend, Manuel Locatelli is back in the squad and available for selection against Atalanta. As Motta said in his post-game press conference after the Torino draw, Andrea Cambiaso is still very much dealing with inflammation in his sprained ankle and is getting pain-killer injections to be able to play, albeit in a limited capacity. ............ As hard as it may be to imagine these days, a win will see Juventus move level on points with Lazio and up into fourth place thanks to the Bianconeri’s head-to-head victory earlier this season and much better goal differential. ............ JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH Considering that Atalanta are the one team that Juventus have yet to play domestically, there is still one more chance for one of the many summer signings to get the “first game against his former team” out of the way. And it just so happens it’s a player who has, to date, not been able to replicate the same kind of success at his new club that he had at his previous club. ............ Combine the player and the squad struggling with the high price that Juventus paid to being Koopmeiners to Turin and you’ve got a situation in which a very talented player is even more under the microscope than he has been since his first signed. The first five months of Koopmeiners’ Juventus career have not been all that great. As we’ve said before, his overall form have been a lot like the team as a whole — some good moments but certainly lacking the overall punch that so many of us were hoping to see by now. The same player that was one of the best players in Serie A last season has yet to consistently show his face in bianconero, and we’re still waiting for him to reappear no matter if it’s in the No 10 role playing deeper in midfield. ............ But this very simple fact remains true: If Juventus are to kick into gear during this big stretch of games in January, it will most certainly have to coincide with Koopmeiners doing the same. MATCH INFO When: Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025. Where: Gewiss Stadium, Bergamo, Italy. Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 14 Serie A Preview: Atalanta vs Juventus – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction One of the most heavily anticipated fixtures in the Serie A calendar pits Atalanta and Juventus against each other this Tuesday. Gewiss Stadium sets the stage for this mouth-watering top-five six-pointer, with both sides desperately needing three points to fortify their seasonal goals. ............ Atalanta’s bid to win their first Scudetto is still alive and kicking as they have a game in hand. But visiting Juventus could throw a spanner in the works, even though they’re not having a great time. Like their hosts, Thiago Motta’s team bowed out of the Italian Cup semi-finals and opened the new calendar year with a draw. That’s become a recurring theme for Juventus this season. Kenan Yildiz’s opener was merely enough for a point in a 1-1 stalemate against Torino in Saturday’s Derby della Mole. This latest share of the spoils landed a hammer blow on Juve’s chances of returning into the title frame, leaving them 14 points below Napoli ahead of this midweek round. Match Preview Atalanta ............ Juventus Juventus could inflict Atalanta’s 76th head-to-head defeat and, in turn, contribute to their rivals’ unwanted piece of history. Whether they’re capable of achieving this task remains debatable. The abovementioned draw against Torino was their 12th in 19 Serie A outings this season (W7), making them the unrivaled ‘stalemate specialists.’ Perhaps the only positive from that abysmal piece of statistics is that they remain the only team in Italy’s top flight yet to taste defeat this season. However, that’s hardly a consolation for the Juventus faithful now that their title hopes are nearly dead in the water. Anything other than an epic winning streak in the second half of the season would likely condemn Juventus to another year without the Scudetto. The Bianconeri can still draw heart from being the only Italian team to go unbeaten in every competitive away match this season (W5, D7). On another positive note, they’ve opened the scoring in four of their last five away league contests. Yet, that holds little significance, considering they only emerged victorious twice (D3). Team News ............ On the other hand, Juventus cannot call upon Arkadiusz Milik, Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Francisco Conceicao, and Dusan Vlahovic. Vlahovic’s absence will likely force Motta to deploy Nicolas Gonzalez as a ‘false nine,’ which failed to pay dividends in the Turin derby last weekend. Atalanta vs Juventus Potential Starting Line-ups Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; Pasalic; Lookman, De Ketelaere. Juventus (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, McKennie; Locatelli, Thuram; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Weah; Gonzalez. Atalanta vs Juventus Prediction Neither team would benefit much from a draw. However, Juventus’ proclivities under Motta are too tempting to be overlooked, making us believe another share of the spoils could be on the menu. Prediction: Draw . As the Bianconeri prepare to face Atalanta tonight, they remain without several key players due to injuries. However, even among those available, Motta is reportedly considering a few adjustments to the starting lineup. One of these changes could involve Cambiaso starting the match as a right-back, replacing Nicolo Savona in that position. Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 14 Stats put Juventus ahead of Atalanta as both teams meet tonight If past encounters are any indication, Juventus appear to have the upper hand as they prepare to face Atalanta in Bergamo tonight. Both sides enter the match eager to shake off recent poor results, with neither managing to find consistent form. The Bianconeri have been struggling to secure enough wins and seem more focused on avoiding defeats than playing with the attacking intent required to dominate matches. ............ Historical statistics strongly favour Juventus ahead of this encounter. Out of 63 meetings between the two sides, Juventus have lost only eight, with La Dea winning just 20. Additionally, the Bianconeri have enjoyed significant success in Bergamo, remaining unbeaten in 18 of their last 19 away games against Atalanta. The only defeat in that run came in 2021, but since then, Juventus have maintained their dominance in this fixture. Furthermore, Atalanta have failed to score against Juventus in their last two home games, highlighting the defensive solidity the Bianconeri often bring to these encounters. These encouraging stats might give Juventus a psychological edge, but as ever in football, past records cannot guarantee future outcomes. The statistics may paint a favourable picture for Juventus, but it is crucial for the players to stay grounded and focused on the task at hand. Overconfidence can be dangerous, and Atalanta is not a team to be underestimated, particularly on their home turf. The Bianconeri didn’t have much of a say in the first half until late, and their fans hoped things would change after the break. Both teams opened up the game at the start of the second period, with Kenan Yildiz nearly opening the scoring immediately after the restart, but Marco Carnesecchi made a good save. Moments later, Pierre Kalulu should have scored his first Juventus goal, but his shot ricocheted off the inside of the post, and Carnesecchi saved on the line. After Mario Pasalic missed a fine chance for Atalanta, Kalulu opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish. ............ Nico Gonzalez was again used as a False 9, although in reality Teun Koopmeiners seemed to be taking that role more during the match itself, even when jeered loudly by his former fans. ............ Thiago Motta had to watch from the stands following his red card for a touchline row with Paolo Vanoli in the Derby della Mole, but he attended the post-match media duties. ............ “We are certainly not happy with the result, but we recognise the effort and performance of these lads. I thank them for their efforts, they worked together and it was a great game,” ............ “These lads have been giving their all in every match and the good performances have been coming for a while now. Atalanta started with a different defence to what we were expecting, but we knew that we could not give them any reference points. It is no coincidence that Kalulu scored the goal, because everyone has to move and participate in the attacking approach. “Of course, we are not happy with the draw, because we always want to win, but it is my duty to publicly thank these players as well as in private for their efforts.” ............ It is yet another stalemate for Juventus, who are still unbeaten after 20 Serie A rounds, but also drew 13 of those matches and remain nine points adrift of Atalanta who are now in third place. “We always have the right spirit, it’s true that we have drawn a lot this season and are not happy about that, we cannot be happy with a draw, because these lads work every day to win, but the spirit was never lacking,” continued Thiago Motta. Incredibly, they are 15 points worse off than at this stage last season. ............ . Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 15 Juventus 1 - Atalanta 1: Initial reaction and random observations Juventus’ game in hand arrived Tuesday night, with a very difficult trip to Bergamo awaiting Thiago Motta’s squad amidst a run of six draws in the last seven games. ............ Juventus’ first away Serie A fixture of 2025 ended like so many of those in the final months of 2024. Juve got the lead, but they couldn’t hold onto it, as Matteo Retegui’s 78th-minute header just in front of a suddenly stranded Nicolo Savona saw Atalanta pull even for what eventually became a 1-1 draw. It was the 13th time Juventus have draw a game domestically this season and marked the 13th and 14th points Motta’s squad have dropped from a winning position — a trend that is becoming much more of a common occurrence as the calendar has flipped from 2024 to 2025. ............ Maybe because one the fact of it, a draw in Bergamo against an Atalanta team that has played so damn well for much of the season is a result you’ll take more often than not. It’s totally OK to be like “they’re good, coulda won, coulda lost, but we’ll take the point and head home.” Within a singular moment without thinking of anything else that Juventus has done this season, a draw in Bergamo isn’t bad — especially against this iteration of La Dea. ............ Juventus did a lot right against Atalanta on Tuesday night. I truly feel that way. They weathered the early Atalanta storm and didn’t concede a goal. It certainly wasn’t pretty at times, with individual errors and the inability to connect passes as Atalanta pressed like madmen and proved once again that Juve struggle against a team that presses high. But as the first half went on — and especially in the last 15 minutes or so before halftime — things turned for the better and Juventus were the more dangerous team. That improved play carried into a second half that was — holy crap — a whole lot more wide open than the opening 45 minutes. Juventus, as they have done lately, grabbed the opening goal thanks to Pierre Kalulu’s end-to-end run and equally impressive assist from Weston McKennie. It was just the third time all season that Atalanta conceded the opening goal. ............ Because of it, it’s the latest instance of this team doing some good things but then having one singular mistake coming back to haunt them and cost them points. Were Juve perfect in the second half outside of Savona losing Retegui in the box? Of course not. If not for a couple of big saves from Michele Di Gregorio and a Koopmeiners goal line clearance, this very much could have been Juve’s first Serie A loss of the season. But it wasn’t. It was a draw. Because they’re all draws at this point. At least it feels that way. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS If only Juventus could hold a lead. If only. If only, if only if only. Also would be nice if one of those goal line technology calls actually went Juventus’ way. That’s not the first time they’ve been literal millimeters away from a goal only for a wonder save to prevent them from scoring. It’s just another reason why this season just has awful luck on top of everything else. ............ Weston McKennie started Tuesday night’s game as the false 9. He then dropped back and played as the makeshift No. 10 as Teun Koopmeiners played further up the field. He also played out wide on the right in the second half, adding to the list of positions that he played over the course of his 90 minutes on the field. What I’m getting at is that dude has, even more than last season, shown he is maybe the best Swiss army knife in Serie A. Or at least one of the best. Dude just does whatever is asked of him and does it well much of the time. Atalanta supporters throwing stuff at Koopmeiners as he takes corners. Very nice. This game proved that Koopmeiners just can’t be a false nine going forward. Sure, he can do some of the tricks and some of the flicks to combine with his teammates, but he simply doesn’t have the speed like Nico Gonzalez does to try and hurt the opposing defense when there’s a ball hit over the top. Yet Juve kept trying it. If only Kenan Yildiz passed to Samuel Mbangula rather than going for all the glory and trying to get it past Carnesecchi at the far post. If only. ............ Kalulu was so good in defense. Just so good, man. I don’t even want to think about where this Juve team would be without considering there’s also no Bremer since early October. ............ Andrea Cambiaso wasn’t great against Atalanta, but at least it’s nice to know his ankle is good enough — with the help of some pain killers, of course — that he’s healthy enough to play a full 90 minutes again. Juventus shots: 17 Atalanta shots: 17 Juventus did finish with a better xG, so there’s that, I guess. Sure woulda been nice to see them score more than one, though. That could have meant a win. Or at least the chance to blow another lead. I don’t know at this point. So many Carnesecchi saves. Just so many of them. And only one goal. ............ . Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 15 Juventus’ parade of draws continue as they fail to finish against Atalanta At this point, I feel like I just have to scream it from the rooftops. I’ve seen it too many times, under multiple coaches in multiple seasons. It’s the thing that most needs to change about this Juventus team, and it frustrates me to no end when it happens over and over again. So, let me climb up here and get it out: PLAYING CONSERVATIVE WHILE AHEAD IS DEATH! We’ve seen Juve do it so often this year, and especially last year. They score a goal, then immediately drop deep into their own territory and invite their opponent back into the game. Tuesday night’s match against Atalanta was that failing writ large. Juve had played a solid first half, and had come out of the gates flying at halftime. When Pierre Kalulu opened the scoring with a striker’s finish nine minutes after the restart, things looked like they might finally be looking up. And then they turtled up. Over the next 24 minutes, Juve allowed Atalanta two-thirds of the possession and allowed a shot a shade over every three minutes. The equalizer that came in the 78th minute was about as predictable as it got, dooming Juve to another 1-1 draw to add to the pile. Juventus’ inability to keep their foot on the gas and put games away has been their Achilles heel all year, and it again haunted them as the draws have continued to pile up. If the team is going to meet their minimum objectives this season — like qualifying for the Champions League — they’re going to have to figure out how to keep moving forward and put matches to an end early. ............ Gasperini’s men deployed their trademark press from the off, and Juve found it very difficult to play their way through it. They were harried into multiple loose passes, often gifting Atalanta some short fields. Koopmeiners, while not quite the recipient of the volcanic hatred that Vlahovic was on the end of in his first trip back to Florence, was nonetheless loudly jeered whenever he came close to the ball. ............ The hosts retained the initiative for much of the game’s early stages, but Juve did manage to get a few punches in as the half wore on. In the 21st minute Koopmeiners twisted around De Roon and got himself into the left channel, but he pushed his shot wide, eliciting a reaction from the crowd about as loud as a goal. ............ As halftime approached, Kolasinac somehow avoided a card when he ran elbow-first into McKennie’s face. Juve started to pep up in the half’s final moments. They got a short-field run of their own when Koopmeiners made an excellent tackle in midfield and sent the ball toward the box. Yildiz’s shot was blocked as he drifted inside from the left and fired for the far post, but the rebound went right to González, who settled the ball and fired a shot that scratched the outside of the goalpost with Carnesecchi beaten. ............ The Bianconeri kept that momentum up after they came out of the locker room. Even Gatti was feeling the momentum, and he started bombing forward with the ball multiple times in the first five minutes, feeding Yildiz for a shot that was blocked before deciding to go for one himself that was likewise interdicted. On the ensuing corner Kalulu flicked the ball off the inside of the far post, then watched as it bounced up the goal line before Carnesecchi clawed it away. Everyone connected with Juventus was waiting for referee Daniele Doveri to point to his watch and award the goal via goal-line technology, but no such intervention came as Pasalic charged upfield on the counter, facing up Locatelli one-on-one before firing well wide of the target. Replays soon showed a bare millimeter of the ball still touching the line. It was the second time this year Juve had been on the wrong end of such a call, and had Juventini wondering when a break would finally come their way. That break finally came four minutes later, when a long ball from Locatelli found McKennie in stride. Kalulu was out wide on the sideline and headed downfield with him, underlapping him perfectly and breaking into the channel before depositing it under Carnesecchi’s arm and into the net for his first goal as a Juventus player. Gasperini immediately sent Lazar Samardzic onto the field, and his dribbling ability caused the visitors problems as they began to drop back. ............ Retegui made his appearance with 25 minutes left to go as Atalanta tried to turn the screw. For a brief moment, it looked like Juve were finally managing to get the game flow back to an equilibrium, but that turned out to be fleeting, and the pressure Juve had been inviting for the majority of the half finally broke them. De Roon sent a cross in from the attacking left that Bellanova headed back across the grain. Retegui snuck behind Savona to power a header just past the hand of Di Gregorio. ............ The very last chance for either team fell to Juve at the beginning of stoppage time, when McKennie put Yildiz behind the defense in the left channel. Samuel Mbangula was running into the middle of the box and was completely unmarked, but Yildiz took the shot himself, beating Carnesecchi but bouncing his effort past the post. Doveri stopped the match after five minutes of added time to make draw No. 13 official. LE PAGELLE MICHELE DI GREGORIO - 7. Made a couple of really excellent saves both with the game tied and with Juve up. Could do nothing about Retegui’s goal. NICOLÒ SAVONA - 6. Had a pair of key passes and generally defended well. Retegui getting behind him to tie the score perhaps highlighted a bit of inexperience on his part, but it was also a very good play by Retegui to get around him. FEDERICO GATTI - 6. ............ PIERRE KALULU - 8. A fantastic all-around game. His goal was taken like a striker, and he had some gaudy defensive stats as well, with four tackles, five clearances, and a block. Signing him might’ve been the best transfer move in Europe this past summer. ANDREA CAMBIASO - 4.5. This was a really awful game from Cambiaso. He misplaced simple passes and gave the ball away deep in his own territory multiple times. The fact that he led the game with six tackles simply doesn’t mitigate how disastrous some of his touches were, especially in the first half. MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6. ............ KHEPHREN THURAM - 6.5. ............ KENAN YILDIZ - 5.5. Led the team with four dribbles and added a pair of tackles on defense, but I knocked him half a point for that last-minute shot when he ignored Mbangula there for a tap-in. WESTON McKENNIE - 7. Co-led the team with two key passes, including an excellent assist for Kalulu. His passing up front was excellent all night, helping set up attacks both directly and indirectly. NICO GONZÁLEZ - 6. ............ TEUN KOOPMEINERS - 5.5. Made a couple of good plays defensively to start attacking plays, but was often left to be the one to try to latch on to balls going through the defense and he simply didn’t have the pace to make anything out of them. His goal-line clearance in the second half was important. SUBS DOUGLAS LUIZ - 5.5. ............ SAMUEL MBANGULA - NR. Only touched the ball twice and was mostly trying to defend late—although he was perfectly placed to win the game in stoppage time if he’d gotten the ball. NICOLÒ FAGIOLI - NR. ............ MANAGER ANALYSIS There were some issues in the way the game was handled by Hugeux in the dugout. The team needed more fresh legs out there earlier, and keeping two subs in his pocket didn’t help. Tim Weah in particular should’ve been out on the field late in the game. His pace would’ve been invaluable to try and break out of the waves of pressure that Atalanta was creating. ............ The team still needs depth — things that the imminent additions of Alberto Costa and Randal Kolo Muani will help with, as well as the recovery of guys like Vlahovic and Conceição. But they are still shooting themselves in the foot every time they score a goal only do drop deep and try to see the game out from there. If Bremer were upright, it could maybe have been different, especially against Atalanta, but he’s not back until next season. Without the backstop of the league’s best defender, attack can often be the best form of defense, keeping the ball away from the opponent and pushing to score even more to put the game out of reach early. Until that happens, I fear Juve won’t be able to turn enough of these draws into wins. LOOKING AHEAD Juve will have a quick rematch with AC Milan on Saturday in what could turn out to be a top-four six-pointer for the top four. Then trips to Club Brugge and Napoli end a difficult two-week stretch of games. . Juventus went ahead through Pierre Kalulu and seemed on course to secure all three points, but Atalanta found an equaliser through Mateo Retegui. The match was closely contested, with both teams creating chances to win. However, Juventus showed an intensity and determination that has been missing for much of this season. The Bianconeri’s performance in the second half was particularly encouraging as they pushed for a winner. ............ Massimo Pavan expressed his thoughts on the performance and mentality displayed by Juventus after the match. He said: “With Atalanta, a little flame [was ignited], now let’s not let it go out. I saw a team that wanted to try to play the game, that had chances, and Atalanta celebrated the draw while Juventus was angry. The mentality is right, and to keep this flame alive, we have to win against Milan. We’ll see if it will be possible.” ............ The players’ reaction to the result and their evident disappointment at not winning suggest a shift in their mindset. This has been a season of inconsistency for Juventus, but the performance against Atalanta offers some optimism that the team is beginning to show signs of progress under Thiago Motta. The upcoming fixture against Milan presents an opportunity to build on this performance and demonstrate that the mentality Pavan described can be sustained. ............ . Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 15 Nicolas Gonzalez insists Juventus is not in a crisis after Atalanta draw Nicolas Gonzalez has addressed critics who believe Juventus is currently in a crisis. The Bianconeri have struggled to secure consistent victories this season, with draws overshadowing their number of wins. Despite boasting some of the best players in Italy, Juventus has been unable to consistently get the best performances out of their squad. ............ Juventus are determined to improve their form in the weeks ahead. Following the 1-1 draw against Atalanta, Gonzalez dismissed the notion of a crisis and emphasised the team’s positive trajectory. He said: “What crisis? We are not in crisis, this is the right path. We have fought and battled, we hope from now until the end of the championship to get the results we deserve. We don’t like to draw, but today we played a great game and I’m happy with the team’s performance.” ............ However, for a club with Juventus’ ambitions, playing well alone is not sufficient. The focus must now shift towards securing wins consistently, ensuring their promising displays result in points on the table. Gonzalez’s confidence in the team’s progress reflects a desire to silence their critics, but tangible results are needed to back up his claims. ............ . While the result was not ideal for the Bianconeri, their display offered glimpses of the quality and determination needed to improve their fortunes this season. The men in black and white showed resilience and teamwork throughout the match, which allowed them to stay competitive against a strong Atalanta side. Despite not securing all three points, Locatelli and his teammates demonstrated an attitude that could bode well for their upcoming fixtures. If Juventus can maintain this standard of play, they have a strong chance of climbing both the Serie A and Champions League tables. ............ Locatelli, a key figure in the team, took to Instagram after the match to share his thoughts on the game and emphasise the importance of persistence. In his post, he wrote: “We are the first to be angry about this situation, but today and in other games I saw a great team spirit and this must be the basis. We are missing something that we will only find with daily work. Until the end!” ............ Juventus coach Thiago Motta is reportedly considering giving the nod to Douglas Luiz in Saturday’s big clash against Milan. ............ The Brazil international made his first start in several months in last Saturday’s Derby della Mole against Torino. He replaced the suspended Manuel Locatelli in the deep-lying playmaker role, while fellow new signings Khephren Thuram and Teun Koopmeiners played higher up the pitch. ............ On Tuesday, Luiz was relegated to the bench with Locatelli available for selection once more, only making a cameo appearance against Atalanta in the contest that ended with a 1-1 draw. ............ Motta is now reflecting on his options ahead of the weekend trip to Milano, as he could decide to hand the Brazilian the reins in the middle of the park. This would be a significant call given that Locatelli, Thuram, Weston McKennie and Koopmeiners are all available. The source adds that in this case, either Locatelli or Thuram would be dropped to make room for Luiz in the double pivot. On the other hand, Koopmeiners’ position remains safe as he remains undroppable in Motta’s selections, even though his displays this season have left much to be desired. . While the team remains unbeaten in the league, they have won fewer games than they have drawn, earning them the unwanted reputation of being “draw specialists.” ............ Juventus are working hard to address this shortfall, but their current form risks jeopardising their hopes of finishing in the top four, let alone mounting a serious bid for the Scudetto. Former Juventus legend Ciro Ferrara has shared his thoughts on the team’s struggles, expressing his disappointment at their failure to close out matches. Ferrara explained: “It’s not a matter of disappointment, but, knowing the environment, the players and the club cannot be satisfied. There were many games that could have closed, but they didn’t. Those draws weigh on the standings and morale. If I were a Juventus player, I would be happy for the important moments, but also disappointed for not being in the top four and for not being able to fight for the Scudetto. The whole environment would have preferred something else.” ............ Socrates 8438 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134141 messaggi Inviato January 17 Taibi explains what to expect from the Juventus-AC Milan match Juventus and AC Milan, two of Italy’s most storied clubs, are set to clash in a highly anticipated Serie A fixture this weekend. Both teams have endured challenging campaigns and are eager to assert their dominance in what promises to be a pivotal encounter. Intriguingly, this match comes just days after the two sides met in the semi-final of the Super Cup, where AC Milan emerged victorious en route to lifting the trophy. ............ Now, Juventus has the chance to avenge that defeat and prove that Milan’s victory was merely a one-off rather than the beginning of a new era of dominance under Conceicao. ............ As anticipation builds, former Italian goalkeeper and pundit Massimo Taibi has shared his thoughts on the encounter and the trajectory of both clubs. Taibi said: “This match is important. Juve is coming from many draws, Milan has a new club, which is trying to grow. Some mistakes have been made, but that’s normal. I believe that they are building to win over the years, like Juventus. At the beginning, we all said that Milan was not on par with Inter or Napoli; we knew that they could aim for the Champions League. Then it always depends on expectations. With these players, they can grow a lot.” ............ This fixture is more than just another league match; it’s a test of resolve and ambition. Juventus must avoid the ignominy of losing to Milan twice in quick succession, while the Rossoneri will look to prove their recent Super Cup triumph was no fluke. For Juventus, this game represents an opportunity not only for revenge but also to send a statement to the rest of Serie A. A victory could serve as a turning point in their season, reviving hopes of a strong finish and perhaps even a push for higher honours. .
