Juventus beat Monza to secure first Serie A win in over a month

Gonzalez v Monza

Juventus secured a 2-1 victory over Monza this evening, ending their winless run in Serie A.

Building on their midweek triumph, Juventus started brightly, dominating the game from the outset. Weston McKennie opened the scoring after just 14 minutes, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Taking the lead is one thing, but could Juventus maintain and extend it? The answer came less than ten minutes later as Monza equalised through Samuele Birindelli. ............

Nicolás González was the next to strike, capitalising on a loose ball to score for the second consecutive match. The Argentine forward’s sharp instincts proved crucial, but it was a different story for Teun Koopmeiners, who was substituted at halftime for Khéphren Thuram after a lacklustre showing.

Eager to extend their advantage, Juve began the second half strongly. The lively Kenan Yıldız forced an excellent save from the Monza goalkeeper, continuing to trouble the opposition with his energetic play.

Francisco Conceição was another standout performer, causing havoc for Monza down the right flank. Despite Juventus’ attacking intent, they failed to add a third goal, leaving Monza with opportunities to threaten on the break as the match progressed into its final stages. ............

Juventus coach Thiago Motta confirmed that Teun Koopmeiners was taken off at half-time against Monza with an ‘adductor issue.’ ............

When he was replaced by Khephren Thuram for the second half at the U-Power Stadium in Monza, DAZN reporters asked Thiago Motta for an explanation.

“He felt something in his adductor harden. We decided not to risk it,” confirmed the coach. ............

Although this is the final game before Christmas, Juventus have a packed fixture list coming up and do not want to risk doing further damage to one of their most valuable players.

They will host Fiorentina on Sunday December 29, then open the Supercoppa Italiana against Milan in Saudi Arabia on January 3.

If they win that, then Juve will also play the Supercoppa Final against either Inter or Atalanta a few days later.

Serie A then resumes with Torino and Atalanta away, then hosting Milan on January 18.

Thiago Motta sees progress from Juventus in their 2-1 win away to Monza, but confirms he will continue experimenting different players in that tricky trequartista role. ‘It depends.’

The Bianconeri badly needed a win in the top flight after four consecutive stalemates and they ended that 43-day wait for success at the U-Power Stadium in Monza. ............

It was the first time in all competition that Juventus had started Teun Koopmeiners, Nico Gonzalez, Kenan Yildiz, Francisco Conceicao and Dusan Vlahovic together.

“Nico Gonzalez and McKennie are open to taking roles that they don’t always hold, but they do it very well because they have a high level and it is a pleasure for a coach to work with lads who have this attitude”. ............

“We have always struggled against teams that defend and go on the counter. We needed to kill off the game, this is part of the growth process, taking the extra risk against these teams and potentially allowing counter-attacks,” continued Thiago Motta.

“We were in the position to do the transitions with quality in the second half when we took the lead, but we didn’t do it well enough.” ............

“It depends on their form and the kind of match we want to play against the opponent. Nico Gonzalez can do it very well, I see him in training and he already played in many roles in his career. When someone can have many different roles, it means he pays attention to what his teammates do, he is special and wants to improve himself all the time.

“Nico Gonzalez can play on the right or left, as a centre-forward, but I also see him doing well there. As I said, I only ever use players in a role if they are convinced that they can do it.” ............

“We only look at the table at the end of the season. Before that, we take it one game at a time and try to aim for the maximum result against every opponent,” insisted Thiago Motta.

Nico Gonzalez and Weston McKennie insist they are ‘comfortable and happy to continue’ in a variety of different roles for Juventus ‘Professor’ Thiago Motta. ............

“I am very happy, firstly because it was too important that the team won. After the injury, getting back to the field is the most wonderful feeling. We are on the right track and must continue like this,” said Nico Gonzalez.

Having used Teun Koopmeiners in the trequartista role with limited success, in the last couple of games Thiago Motta has moved Nico Gonzalez there, while some are also calling for Kenan Yildiz to take that position.

“I am usually a winger, everyone knows that, but if I have to play in goal to help the team, then I’m happy to do it,” added the Argentina international.

“I told the coach that I feel comfortable there, so I am happy to continue.” ............

“The victory was the most important thing, as it was tough to have that many draws. The three points are good for us, for the fans, our family to help us all have a nicer Christmas,” McKennie said.

“Scoring a goal or providing an assist is not the most important thing, it’s about the team getting the win.” ............

It was noted that McKennie refers to the coach as ‘Prof’ – the Italian term for a teacher, short for Professor – while he also joked with Nico Gonzalez about the Argentine’s singing.

“It is also important during difficult moments to have moments where you smile and laugh, he has this great South American energy, he’s good to have around.”

Juventus 2 - Monza 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Belangrijke Koopmeiners houdt ook zorgen over aan zege Juve - Voetbal International

As the final whistle sounded on a frigid Sunday night at the U-Power Stadium, you wouldn’t be mistaken to hear a collective sigh of relief from plenty of Juventini watching on. I know I was one of them, with the sense that Juventus’ first win in 43 days was very much secured but was also a total grind to get to that point where three points were finally secured again. ............

The streak of four straight draws in league competition is officially a thing of the past with Juve’s 2-1 win over a Monza side that took the field at the bottom of the Serie A table. Juventus, on a night when they were far from their best, made a Nico Gonzalez goal right before halftime stand during an incredibly nervy second half when it looked the final score would be anything but what it ended up being. Yet, even with Monza — a team that has some of the worst attacking numbers in the league — putting Juventus’ defense under on a regular basis after the halftime break, a team that was bending did not fully break even though it was very much trending that direction.

No matter how they got there, it’s three points that were very much needed. ............

We haven’t had the chance to say Juventus have won back-to-back games much at all this season in all competitions, with the wins over Cagliari in the Coppa Italia and Sunday’s victory over Monza being the first time since Sept. 28 and Oct. 2 in which Juve have won two straight games.

And in a way, it’s fitting that it’s a Gonzalez goal that decides it because those two games, against Genoa and RB Leipzig, are the last two games that the Argentine started prior to the trip to Monza. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • RIP to the draw streak. I think it’s safe to say I won’t miss you one single bit.
  • We were back to being able to count the number of outfield players available off the bench with one hand. Good times. good times. Injuries are fun and everybody loves them.
  • Second straight game in which Michele Di Gregorio had to make a save within the first minute. At least the save against Monza was a lot easier than the kick save he made middweek in the Coppa.
  • We know about the Ex Effect and how that can come into play sometimes, but what do we call it when the son of a former Juventus player scores against them? Samuele Birindelli, unfortunately, now has thinking about all that. ............
  • Juventus had 62% of the possession, but Monza finished with the advantage in total shots, 8-5. Just as one would expect when there’s such a possession swing in one direction, right?
  • Six of Monza’s eight shots came from within the Juventus penalty area — which shows you just how much Juve’s defense was struggling to find their footing after the Bianconeri went up 1-0. ............
  • It will never cease to amaze me how easy Kenan Yildiz makes controlling the ball with his chest look. Just totally no big deal at all. He does it over and over again, and it looks somewhat effortless at this point. Then he goes and runs at a defender a second later and it is all one fluid motion. This boy is good, but you probably knew that already.
  • If the plan is to having Gonzalez play more in the No. 10 role and Koopmeiners a little deeper, it’s going to be quite interesting to see how Yildiz and Nico start to play off each other. We know Francisco Conceição is going to do his thing out on the right and try to trick and flick opposing defenders into oblivion, but there’s a lot of interchangeability possible between Gonzalez and Yildiz based on how they like to play. Just stay healthy now, Nico. ............
  • I’m happy that Andrea Cambiaso is back and now has a week to get fully match fit again to be ready to return to the starting lineup against Fiorentina. It will be nice to have a couple of fullbacks actually available again. ............
  • Then again, this Juve season continues to be somewhat confusing sometimes, so maybe we should have totally expected something like that to happen.
  • I’m just glad Juventus won. That’s pretty much the biggest takeaway form this one that you can have. The streak of draws is over. They got three points again. It’s been a while.

Juventus now has the longest unbeaten run in Europe’s top five leagues

Koopmeiners celebrating v Cagliari

Juventus finally ended their winless streak in Serie A with a 2-1 victory over Monza, giving fans a much-needed boost after a frustrating run of results. Despite struggling to win consistently this season, there is one major positive for the club—their remarkable unbeaten record in the league.

The Old Lady has found it challenging to capitalise on their dominance in matches, often settling for draws that have left fans longing for more decisive outcomes. However, Juventus has remained unbeaten in Serie A this term, showcasing their ability to stay resilient even when not at their best. This unbeaten streak now spans 26 league games, stretching back to the end of last season. This remarkable achievement makes Juventus the team with the longest active unbeaten run across Europe’s top five leagues.

While maintaining such a streak is no small feat, it does not erase the need for Juventus to turn more of these games into victories. Draws may preserve their record, but they do little to advance the team’s ambitions of climbing the league table or challenging for titles.  ............

The win over Monza should serve as a turning point for the Bianconeri. If Juventus can build on this result and maintain their unbeaten streak while securing more wins, they may still achieve their objectives this season.

Motta hopes more injured players will return before the Fiorentina game

L'annuncio di Thiago Motta su Cambiaso e sulla sua squalifica: "Sarà la prima volta, spero inciderà poco"

Juventus will face Fiorentina in their final game of 2024, a fixture that promises to be a tough test for their impressive unbeaten run. The Bianconeri have managed to avoid defeat in all their domestic matches this season, earning admiration from fans and critics alike. As the year comes to a close, fans remain hopeful that this streak will continue, even against a Fiorentina side eager to break their resilience. ............

Fiorentina will be eager to test Thiago Motta’s men, who are battling injury troubles as they prepare for this crucial clash. Injuries have plagued Juventus throughout the campaign, leaving Motta to rely heavily on the depth of his squad. Speaking after their recent victory over Monza, Motta remained optimistic about the potential return of some sidelined players. He said: “The injured? Let’s see who we can recover for the next match, we have a week. We hope to recover some of them, otherwise, we will continue to fight with our players.”

One player causing concern is Teun Koopmeiners, who is awaiting test results following his injury in the Monza game. His potential absence, along with other fitness concerns, could leave Juventus vulnerable against Fiorentina. ............

gpoofu8yomz9vuqci6qc.jpg

Juventus will conclude the first half of their season with a match against Fiorentina. As we reflect on their performances so far, here are the standout players who have been instrumental to the Bianconeri’s campaign.

Andrea Cambiaso

What a revelation Cambiaso has been for Juventus. The young defender has quickly adapted to Thiago Motta’s tactical demands, and his versatility has made him an indispensable asset to the team. ............

Pierre Kalulu

Kalulu has been nothing short of exceptional. His commanding displays in defence have made AC Milan’s decision to let him join Juventus look like a grave mistake.

The club is expected to make his move permanent soon, and with his reliability and composure, Kalulu looks like a long-term solution in Juve’s backline.

Manuel Locatelli

Locatelli has embraced the responsibility of being Juventus’ midfield anchor this season. After a period of inconsistency, he has rediscovered his form and become a pivotal player for Thiago Motta.

The Italian international excels at shielding the defence while contributing to the attack, solidifying his role as the heartbeat of Juve’s midfield.

Weston McKennie

Every time Juventus contemplates parting ways with McKennie, the American proves why that would be a mistake. ............

Francisco Conceição

Conceição, another loanee, has quickly won the hearts of Juventus fans. The 22-year-old’s dynamic displays have led many supporters to hope the club will secure his services permanently.

With his talent and potential, Conceição is set to have a long and successful career at Juventus, and he could play a key role in their pursuit of silverware.

Dusan Vlahovic

Despite facing criticism, Vlahovic has quietly assembled an impressive season. ............

His ability to handle the pressure and score important goals has been critical for the Bianconeri.

Kenan Yildiz

Yildiz is the most exciting attacking prospect at Juventus right now. The Turkish youngster has dazzled with his skill and creativity, quickly becoming a fan favourite.

With his rising importance to the team, Juventus will likely need to fend off significant interest in his services during the summer transfer window.

Juventus recent form shows injury is really a hindrance

Koopmeiners celebrating v Cagliari

Juventus has finally ended their two-month Serie A winless streak with a victory against Monza, following a morale-boosting Italian Cup triumph over Cagliari.

In both matches, the Bianconeri displayed sharpness and resilience, aided by the return of some key players from injury.

Nicolas Gonzalez made his comeback in the Cagliari game, marking the occasion with a cheeky goal, while Andrea Cambiaso was fit and available for the clash against Monza.

Juventus has endured a relentless injury crisis this season, with players seemingly taking turns at the J Medical Centre after nearly every game. ............

The statistics tell a different story—no other top club has dealt with as many injuries as Juventus this term.

As the team begins to recover key players, the impact is clear: Juventus’ form has improved, silencing some of the doubters who questioned whether injuries were truly to blame. ............

Looking ahead, Juventus fans will be hoping for better luck with injuries in the second half of the campaign. The return of key players will be crucial to maintaining consistency and achieving their objectives for the season. ............

The main reason Juventus is not scoring many goals

Dušan Vlahović - Spelersprofiel 24/25 | Transfermarkt

Juventus’ lack of goals is one of the key issues plaguing the club, and this is compounded by the fact that they are also conceding.

When the defence struggles to keep clean sheets, the team must compensate by scoring more goals—a balance Juventus has yet to achieve this season.

The Bianconeri are relying heavily on Dusan Vlahovic to provide the bulk of their goals as their main striker. Unfortunately, he has faced the brunt of the criticism during this goal drought. ............

With 12 goals and 2 assists in 20 games this season, the Serbian striker remains one of the top scorers across the continent. ............

Juventus’ goal-scoring struggles this season stem from the lack of contributions from other players.

Vlahovic has 12 goals, but the club’s second-highest scorers—Kenan Yildiz and Timothy Weah—have only managed four goals each.

If Juventus is to find success this season, more players need to step up and contribute to the team’s offensive efforts. ............

Juventus youngsters have been the one positive this season

Juventus youngster Savona celebrates scoring against Udinese

Juventus boasts some of the finest young talents in Italian football and has shifted its approach, moving away from a culture of overlooking homegrown players. ............

Thiago Motta made several key signings in the summer, but Juve’s youngsters have played a crucial role in supporting the new coach’s vision.

The men in black and white seem committed to trusting their young players, and if they succeed this season, these rising stars will be a significant part of why.

The Most Impressive Youngsters at Juve This Season

Kenan Yildiz
Yildiz is considered the brightest talent in Italian football, and Juventus is fortunate to have secured him for their squad.

His rapid progression through the club’s ranks has been remarkable, and there is widespread excitement about the potential he could realise in the coming years.

Kenan Yildiz celebrates scoring for Juventus against Torino

Samuel Mbangula
Mbangula was a surprise inclusion in the Juve lineup for Thiago Motta’s first match, but he seized the opportunity to make an immediate impact. ............

Nicolo Savona
Savona is currently the most composed and mature of Juve’s young stars. He combines defensive solidity with attacking confidence, making him a standout performer. ............

Crucial day for Juventus star who must prove his fitness ahead of Fiorentina clash

lhqyuvncuxd4cjjbeysz.jpg

The Juventus technical staff will be closely monitoring Teun Koopmeiners in Thursday’s training session, as his availability against Fiorentina remains in jeopardy.

The 26-year-old was in the starting lineup against Monza as usual, albeit he was operating in a deeper role this time (a central midfielder rather than an attacking midfielder). However, this experiment was cut short due to an adductor problem. ............

Luckily for the Dutchman, the medical tests he held on Monday ruled out any injuries. However, it remains to be seen if he’ll be able to regain his optimal physical condition in time for Sunday’s big showdown against the Old Lady’s Tuscan rivals. ............

Moreover, this contest will give Juventus the opportunity to usurp Fiorentina in the league standings. The two clubs are part on points, but the Viola are ahead in fourth place thanks to a superior goal difference, and they also have a postponed match in hand due to Edoardo Bove’s shocking collapse against Inter which delayed the contest to a later date.

So for all these reasons and beyond, Motta will be sweating over Koopmeiners’ condition, as he certainly wouldn’t want to lose the services of his ‘irreplaceable’ player for this vital contest.

Friday’s training session brought three pieces of good news for Thiago Motta ahead of Juventus’s upcoming Serie A match at home against Fiorentina on Sunday, but Nico Gonzalez is now a doubt again as he worked individually at Continassa this morning.  ............

As for the positives, Teun Koopmeiners, Danilo and Douglas Luiz all trained regularly with the first team ahead of Sunday’s game against Fiorentina.  ............

While there was positive news on Friday, there is also a new concern surrounding Nico Gonzalez, who is a doubt ahead of Sunday’s game against his former club.

The Argentine is following a personalised training programme in an attempt to lower his workload, which the club hope will minimise the risk of future injuries or relapses.

Cambiaso is expected to return to the Juventus lineup against Fiorentina

Cambiaso in action for Juventus

Andrea Cambiaso made a significant return to the Juventus squad in their recent 2-1 victory over Monza, coming on in the second half to help the team secure a crucial win. The young defender has been a valuable member of the team this season, consistently impressing with his performances, and has become one of Thiago Motta’s most trusted players. ............

As long as Cambiaso is fit, there seems little reason to leave him out of the starting lineup, as his consistency and reliability make him an integral part of the squad. ............

Cambiaso is set to start for Juventus in the match against Fiorentina. This means he will be joining the starting lineup alongside other key players such as Weston McKennie, Nico González, and Kenan Yildiz. Cambiaso’s inclusion in the squad makes sense, as he has proven to be one of Juventus’ most reliable performers when called upon. With a match as tough as this one, Juventus will need all hands on deck, and Cambiaso could very well be a key figure in ensuring they come away with a positive result. His defensive stability and ability to contribute both in defence and going forward will be vital for the Bianconeri as they aim to extend their winning form.

Thiago Motta may even take the rare step of naming an almost unchanged team on Sunday, although Andrea Cambiaso could replace makeshift left-back Weston McKennie.

Leading the hosts' attack, Dusan Vlahovic scored 44 goals in 98 Serie A matches for Fiorentina but has since played four times against the Viola without finding the net. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:

Fiorentina possible starting lineup:

However, the Bianconeri have lost just once at home this season, and it seems that their talented attack is finally finding its feet.

Juventus vs Fiorentina: Preview and Prediction

Juventus vs Fiorentina Prediction and Betting Tips

Juventus fans will have been relieved at watching their team take three points and break the frustrating trend of drawing games ahead of the visit of Fiorentina. The Bianconeri entered last weekend’s clash away at AC Monza at the back of four consecutive stalemates, which had effectively disrupted their chances of a title challenge.

The fans will be hoping for consecutive wins now that there is some momentum with these players, although the Bianconeri have to host a formidable-looking Fiorentina side. Juventus have a one-sided record against the Viola in at least the last 12 league meetings, which does make them slight favourites.

The pressure will be on Thiago Motta to show some resilience and poise to help steer the team back into title contention. So far, they are on 31 points after 17 rounds, with a nine-point gap separating them from leaders Atalanta. Juventus also host a Fiorentina side slightly above them on the table with the same number of points, and Motta will want to go above the Florence side at the end of the weekend. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Thiago Motta will be without a few of his key first-team stars, such as long-term absentees Gleison Bremer, Arkadiusz Milik, and Juan Cabal. Timothy Weah, Jonas Rouhi, and Douglas Luiz are also part of the treatment room for now, which will cause the manager some selection headaches.

The biggest issue so far is a stable defensive setup, as the many injuries in the defensive department have seen the manager shuffle things quite consistently. In fact, there are chances that. Ottawa might name a near-identical starting lineup that beat Monza in the previous matchday.

The only possible change here could see Andrea Cambiaso return to the lineup in place of makeshift left-back Weston McKennie. However, America’s goalscoring contribution might see him retain his place in the lineup. There are a few former Fiorentina players, and at the current moment, Nico Gonzalez is the man in question, as the fans will hope to see the best out of him against his former side.

There is also Dusan Vlahovic, who has yet to find the net against Fiorentina since leaving them to join Juventus, as he has left the game with a blank on four occasions since his move to Turin.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kalulu, McKennie; Locatelli, Koopmeiners; Conceicao, Gonzalez, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Key Stats

  • Juventus have managed to draw 20 Serie A games in 2024.
  • Juventus are undefeated in their last 25 matches in Serie A.
  • Juventus have won 10 of their last 11 home matches against Fiorentina in all competitions.
  • Fiorentina have lost their last two Serie A games.

Player to Watch

Moise Kean

Dusan Vlahovic will take all the headlines ahead of another game against former side Fiorentina, but this time around, it is a former Juventus striker who could have a point to prove. Moise Kean returns to his old stomping grounds with something to prove to his previous employers, as he will want to help his current side, Fiorentina, in a big way. ............

Prediction

Juventus 1-1 Fiorentina

There is a lot at stake in this match, as the winner could get a chance to stay in the relevant distance with the top order, while the loser could find it very hard going forward to climb back up. In any case, the onus will be on Juventus to perform on home soil, and they will have some bit of momentum following their win over Monza.

Fiorentina might come into this clash on the back of consecutive league defeats, but the team are set to gather themselves for a fighting comeback. They have the squad to mount a challenge on Juventus away from home, but this game has all the hallmarks of an eventful draw.

Juventus vs Fiorentina: Match Preview

Post Featured Image

Juventus and Fiorentina are set to clash in a pivotal Serie A match on Sunday evening at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. Both teams are currently level on points, with Juventus in sixth place and Fiorentina just above them in fifth. This encounter is crucial for both sides as they strive to maintain their positions in the race for the Scudetto.

Juventus come into this match with a mixed bag of results. After a frustrating run of draws, they managed to secure a victory against Monza just before Christmas, winning 2-1. This win ended a streak of four consecutive draws in Serie A, providing a much-needed boost to their confidence. The Bianconeri have struggled throughout 2024, recording an unusual number of draws—20 in total—which is a record for the club. However, they have been strong at home, losing only once this season. ............

Historically, Juventus have had the upper hand over Fiorentina, winning 29 out of their last 52 encounters. They have also been dominant at home, having won 12 of their last 13 Serie A matches against Fiorentina at the Allianz Stadium. The last time Fiorentina triumphed away against Juventus was in December 2020, which adds to the psychological edge for the hosts.

Juventus are likely to adopt a cautious approach, focusing on solidifying their defence while looking for opportunities to counterattack. With players like Nico Gonzalez and Vlahovic in attack, they have the potential to exploit any defensive lapses from Fiorentina. ............

Team News

In terms of squad availability, Juventus are facing significant injury challenges. Key players such as Arkadiusz Milik, Bremer, and Douglas Luiz are sidelined, which may force coach Thiago Motta to stick with a familiar lineup. Dusan Vlahovic will lead the attack against his former club, looking to break his goal drought against the Viola. ............

Expected Starting XIs

Juventus: Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Gonzalez, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Fiorentina: De Gea; Dodo, Comuzzo, Ranieri, Gosens; Adli, Cataldi; Colpani, Gudmundsson, Sottil; Kean

Match Prediction

Given Juventus’s home advantage and historical dominance over Fiorentina, the prediction leans towards a narrow victory for the Bianconeri. A scoreline of 1-0 seems plausible as both teams are expected to play cautiously, with Juventus aiming to secure all three points while Fiorentina seeks redemption after recent setbacks.

Prediction: Juventus 1-0 Fiorentina

Serie A Preview: Juventus vs Fiorentina – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

Juventus_Fiorentina_Preview.jpg

Sunday’s high-stakes Serie A encounter between Juventus and Fiorentina could shape both sides’ aspirations for UEFA Champions League qualification next season. There’s nothing but goal difference to separate the clubs before the kick-off, with both seeking a way into the top four.

Weston McKennie and Nicolas Gonzalez were on the scoresheet as Juventus squeezed past rock-bottom Monza 2-1 last weekend. That was their 13th consecutive unbeaten game in all competitions. More importantly, it maintained Thiago Motta’s unbeaten league record in charge.

Despite being the only team alongside Paris Saint-Germain yet to lose a top-flight fixture across Europe’s top-five league this season, Juventus’ notorious inability to turn draws into victories could cost them dearly. Indeed, they languish three points adrift of fourth-placed Lazio pre-round, with nine standing between them and pacesetters Atalanta. ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Motta must find a way to get Juventus into the win column more often. That particularly rings true when factoring in the Turin giants’ habit of sharing the spoils at the Allianz Stadium. Six of their nine home league outings have ended all square, including three of the last four, making them Europe’s uncontested ‘stalemate specialists.’

However, there’s a silver lining. Juventus have squeaked past Fiorentina 1-0 in their last three league meetings at home. Motta must be optimistic about posting another shutout, knowing his men leading the division’s clean-sheet charts with ten, one of which came in their last four home league matches.

Indeed, three of those four games yielded an identical 2-2 scoreline, with the equalizing goal coming in second-half stoppages twice. A less eye-pleasing affair is on the cards as Juventus’ last nine top-flight clashes against Fiorentina have featured under 2.5 goals, highlighting the potential for a low-scoring showdown.

Fiorentina

 ............

Team News

Juventus head into their last Serie A match of 2024 severely weakened by injuries. Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Arkadiusz Milik, Douglas Luiz, and Tim Weah aren’t at Motta’s disposal. Motta has put long-serving captain Danilo up for sale, meaning he’ll likely stay out of the squad.

As for Fiorentina, Marin Pongracic is the only doubt. Edoardo Bove is recovering from a cardiac arrest, but his career in Serie A is over. The same goes for Cristiano Biraghi’s time in Florence after Palladino sidelined him from the team amid growing exit speculation.

Juventus vs Fiorentina Potential Starting Line-ups

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Gonzalez, Yildiz; Vlahovic.

Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dodo, Comuzzo, Ranieri, Gosens; Adli, Cataldi; Colpani, Gudmundsson, Sottil; Kean.

Juventus vs Fiorentina Prediction

As aforementioned, this match-up has all the makings of a tepid affair. Therefore, there’s a feeling that whoever draws first blood would likely take home all three points. Fioreinta’s recent decline could be the ultimate confidence booster for Juventus as we back the hosts to claim a precious win.

Prediction: Juventus to Win

Motta: Possession is not the only key to winning for Juventus

Ahead of their home game against Fiorentina, Motta expressed that Juventus may have to adjust their tactics to compete with Raffaele Palladino’s squad.

Juventus Press Conference

After four consecutive draws in Serie A, Juventus secured their first win against Monza before the Christmas break. Ahead of their home game against Fiorentina this Sunday, Juve manager Thiago Motta expressed his desire for the club to continue their winning form this weekend, albeit against a much tougher opponent than seven days ago. ............

“Our sole focus is on Fiorentina. We will face a strong team, with a very knowledgeable coach who has always done a great job,” Motta said during Saturday’s press conference regarding the challenge of facing a team like La Viola. “Fiorentina have quality players and are excellently organised. Although they were unsuccessful in the last two matches, they still come into the game off the back of a series of important victories. It will be fundamental for us to put in a balanced performance at a high intensity, whilst maintaining our concentration throughout.” ............

“I don’t think possession is the only key to winning. Many other things count, like intensity and balance.”

According to Motta, “against Manchester City we showed that you can win in different ways. With Fiorentina we will have to be careful, they are dangerous in transition.” ............

“The players are doing well,” Motta said. “Douglas Luiz, Nico Gonzalez, Danilo and Teun Koopmeiners are all back with the squad. Nico Gonzalez trained separately due to a fatigue, but he did well today.” ............

“I hope and believe a lot in Douglas Luiz. He has been out for a long time,” Motta Said. “(Although) he certainly doesn’t have the physical level of some of his teammates. He can do everything and has shown he’s a complete midfielder at a high level.”

Juventus vs. Fiorentina match preview

JUVENTUS vs FIORENTINA | Serie A 2023/2024 Journée 31 | Full Match | Efootball Prediction

We have seen a lot of quirky things to happen Juventus because of all the draws that have happened over the course of the first 17 games of this Serie A season. One of the most notable besides all of the dropped points is the simple fact that back-to-back wins just haven’t been all that plentiful. And, as a result, no winning streaks of a decent length that could see Thiago Motta’s squad try and cut the deficit between themselves and those at the top of the league table. ............

And certainly the kind of winning streak that Thiago Motta would love to see his team potentially go on as they go into 2025.

Yet, with all of those draws that Motta’s squad have recorded through the first 17 games of the 2024-25 season, Fiorentina and Juventus enter Sunday night’s matchup level on 31 points in fifth and sixth, respectively, with La Viola — who have a game in hand — and their better goal difference being what has them ahead of their Turin rivals. ............

Unsurprisingly, Motta was not falling into the trap of Fiorentina’s back-to-back losses.

“Although they were unsuccessful in the last two matches, they still come into the game off the back of a series of important victories,” Motta said during Saturday’s pre-match press conference.

“It will be fundamental for us to put in a balanced performance at a high intensity, whilst maintaining our concentration throughout,” Motta said.

So, basically, much more of what we saw from Juventus in the first half against Monza — other than the total lapse at the back that led to a goal being scored — rather than the hang-on-for-dear-life second 45 minutes that saw Motta’s defense bending as much as it could without breaking. They’ve had a week off and solely focus on training rather than playing midweek thanks to Christmas, so a defense that looked tired as things went on against Monza hopefully got some much-needed rest.

You just hope that all of it adds up to Juventus getting one last victory at home in 2024.

They’ve certainly been in sixth place long enough — even before the November international break arrive — and a win over Fiorentina could finally see Motta’s squad move up in the standings for the first time in just about two months.

Or it could just end the same way that the last three meetings these two teams has gone — a 1-0 win to Juventus. That would see Juventus win back-to-back games for a third time this season and send them into 2025 with at least a little bit of moment after so many draws.

TEAM NEWS

  • Surprisingly, considering how the last handful of weeks have been, there’s actually some good injury news. Three players who might have been question marks in the middle of the week — Douglas Luiz, Teun Koopmeiners and González — will all be available, Motta said during his pre-match press conference. ............
  • That means Juventus’ injury list is now down to five players: Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Arek Milik, Timothy Weah and Jonas Rouhi. Weah is trying to work his way back in time for next week’s Italian Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
  • Considering the season Douglas Luiz has had to date, there is already plenty of criticism coming Juve’s way for the deal for the former Aston Villa midfielder. However, Motta backed the 26-year-old Brazilian, saying “I hope and believe a lot in him. ... He can do everything and has shown he’s a complete midfielder at a high level.”
  • A pair of Juventus midfielders, Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Fagioli, are one yellow card away from reaching their limit and having to serve a one-game suspension.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

We know about the relatively one-way transfer business that has involved Juventus and Fiorentina for much of the last decade. A lot of money has gone to Florence, and in return La Viola’s best players have made their eay to Turin.

Two of them, both with the same first name as the other, are now playing their football else where. But the two most recent ones will be likely be key components to what Motta is going to try and do when facing Fiorentina on Sunday night at the Allianz.

Juventus FC v Cagliari Calcio - Coppa Italia

This weekend, Nico González will be facing the club that brought him to Italy for the first time since his summer move to Turin. Like Michele Di Gregorio this past weekend, it will be an emotional day for a player who was very much at the heart of Fiorentina’s success the last couple of years under then-manager Vincenzo Italiano. ............

Having González back in the fold gives Motta options. He can play centrally and drop Koopmeiners deeper, or it could mean somebody like Francisco Conceição can be an option off the bench to cause havoc against a tired defense or vice versa. This is what the vision was when the flurry of deals in the final couple of weeks of the summer transfer window took place — and finally Motta has just about everybody outside of Weah available to him.

So, no matter if he’s in the starting lineup or one of the first options Motta turns to off the bench Sunday night, González getting a crack at his former club for the first time will certainly be must-see TV. And if his recent trend of scoring goals when he steps onto the field continues, that will be a good thing, too.
