Motta previews Lille-Juventus, defends his team-selection policy: “I believe in it 200%”

UCL | Lille-Juventus, la conferenza stampa di Motta e Thuram - Juventus

On the eve of the Champions League clash, Juventus coach Thiago Motta discussed the encounter against Lille while shedding some light on his philosophy. ............

“We have great respect for Lille, their coach and the players,” said the 42-year-old in his pre-match press conference.

“Dusan [Vlahovic] is doing well, he’s been working hard since the start of the season. Now he has to continue to give something more for the team. We have a lot of faith in Dusan and the others. We want a strong performance tomorrow.”

Douglas Luiz has received a call-up after overcoming a recent injury, and Motta insists the midfielder could have an important role to play from the start of coming off the bench.

“With Douglas back, we have one more player who can help us. Either from the start or coming off the bench, I’m happy to have him. ............

“Is it risky? It could be. It depends on how you perceive it, I don’t see it that way. It takes so much effort from us to track the conditions of the players and study who can do better at that particular moment.

“Everyone has their own philosophy, they are all respectable. I believe 200% in mine. The decisions will be made based on the work we do during the week, on and off the pitch, the attitude, the technical quality, the physical condition and so on.”

Preview: Lille vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

EA FC 25 PS4 | LOSC Lille VS Juventus - UEFA Champions League | Group Stage | Gameplay PS4

Two teams with six points from three Champions League matches meet on Tuesday, as Lille host Juventus at Stade Pierre Mauroy.

The sides' first competitive meeting comes after the Ligue 1 side enjoyed stunning back-to-back wins over both Madrid clubs, while Juve faltered for the first time at the end of October.

Match preview

Having caused quite a stir by winning 1-0 against reigning champions Real Madrid in their last Champions League home game, Lille will now look to win successive home fixtures in Europe's top club competition for the first time to date. ............

After scoring six times in the course of winning their first two Champions League fixtures under Thiago Motta - against PSV Eindhoven and RB Leipzig - Juventus confidently announced their return to Europe's top table.

However, since the Italian giants were beaten by Stuttgart last time out, they have lost a little momentum in Serie A, slipping further behind league leaders Napoli.

Juve had pulled off a remarkable 3-2 win at Leipzig despite going down to 10 men, but they slipped up against Stuttgart in Turin, conceding the only goal in stoppage time, just after Danilo was sent off. ............

On Saturday, the Bianconeri steadied the ship by beating Udinese 2-0, remaining the only unbeaten team in Italy's top flight this season - albeit having drawn six of 11 games so far.

Now, before a weekend clash with city rivals Torino, the two-time European champions will try to win in France, keeping them in the mix for a coveted top-eight finish.

Team News

 ............

While the hosts will have Alexsandro back from a ban, Juventus will be missing two Brazilian defenders of their own: Danilo must serve a suspension, while Bremer succumbed to a serious knee injury during the win over Leipzig.

Summer signing Nico Gonzalez is still struggling with a thigh issue, but Teun Koopmeiners made his first start for several weeks at the weekend, and Douglas Luiz will be back in the squad.

Having broken into the starting XI of late, ex-Lille winger Tim Weah - who scored eight goals in 107 games for LOSC before moving to Turin - could continue to support Dusan Vlahovic in the final third.

Lille possible starting lineup:
Chevalier; Meunier, Diakite, Alexsandro, Gudmundsson; Bouaddi, Andre; Zhegrova, Angel Gomes, Sahraoui; David

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, McKennie; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Weah; Vlahovic

We say: Lille 2-2 Juventus

Both teams are flying high domestically and have similar records in Europe, so it could be difficult to separate them on Tuesday evening.

As Juventus have started to leak goals, Lille should score at least once; however, Juve's front line has recently clicked into gear and can strike hard on the counter.

Lille’s Genesio: ‘We’ll be missing 10 players, It will be difficult to face Juventus’

Conferenza stampa Genesio pre Lille Juve: le parole

As the Champions League returns with several intriguing matchups, Lille prepare to host Juventus in a crucial game for both teams’ qualification hopes. On the eve of the match, Lille’s manager Bruno Genesio addressed the media in a press conference. ............

Regarding his expectations for the match, Genesio stated: “Every Champions League game is different, but there’s a fundamental parameter for achieving a result: commitment. Like Italian teams, Juventus is very well organized and very difficult to face. It’s important to be aware that we’ve already achieved two great feats in this competition. So we’ll play at our best, and we have our fans who will give us strength.”

Lille has already secured 6 points by defeating both Real and Atletico Madrid. Commenting on their journey so far, Genesio said: “Before Sporting in Portugal, Real, and then Atlético again in Madrid, we might have expected to have one or three points. Today we have six after overcoming two of the biggest teams in our group. ............

In conclusion, Genesio shared his approach with the players: “I talk little about the result with my players, more about how to play, how to achieve the goal. This is the most important thing, to eliminate the pressure we put on qualification. A victory would be a big step. But we haven’t arrived yet, there’s a big club in front of us, we mustn’t forget its history.”

The most interesting stats leading to Lille vs Juventus

Lille Osc vs Juventus Prediction - Champions League - 05/11/2024

On Tuesday night, Lille will host Juventus at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in the fourth matchday of the Champions League group stage.

The Bianconeri currently sit 14th in the overall table after seeing their perfect start interrupted by a surprising defeat at the hands of Stuttgart. The Ligue 1 side is right behind the Old Lady in 15th place. ............

First of all, it should be noted that this will be the maiden meeting between the two clubs in any official competition.

Moreover, Lille have a humble record against Serie A clubs, only winning one of their previous Champions League contests against Italian opposition, while drawing one and losing two. Their solitary victory was against Milan in December 2016.

Nevertheless, Juventus also have an abysmal record against French sides recently, only registering one win in their last four meetings with Ligue 1 clubs. They lost home and away against Paris Saint-Germain in their catastrophic group-stage run in the 2022/23 campaign.

Nine different Juventus players have made their Champions League debuts this season. Kenan Yildiz, Andrea Cambiaso, Nico Gonzalez, Douglas Luiz, Michele Di Gregorio, Nicolo Savona, Vasilije Adzic, Jonas Rouhi and Juan Cabal have all made their bow in Europe’s elite club competition this term. This is the highest number of Juventus UCL debutants since the 2012/13 season (eleven in that case). ............

Finally, this will be a special occasion for Timothy Weah who rose to prominence during his time at Lille before signing for Juventus in 2023.

Official Juventus Squad for Lille clash: Douglas Luiz returns

Afbeelding

 ............

Thiago Motta has received a boost as Douglas Luiz has returned to the squad. The Brazilian has been out of action since suffering a muscle problem during the warm-ups ahead of the Stuttgart clash. The 26-year-old thus remained on the sidelines during the last three Serie A contests against Inter, Parma and Udinese.

This morning, the midfielder returned to training alongside his teammates, and managed to prove his fitness. Therefore, Motta decided to add him to the squad. ............

On the other hand, Nico Gonzalez hasn’t recovered from his muscle injury yet. The Argentine is now targetting a return to action in the weekend’s Derby della Mole against Torino. ............

LOSC Lille vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction

Watch Lille vs. Juventus Live Stream | DAZN CA

Juventus will hope they do not fall into the LOSC Lille giant-killing trap as they visit France to take on the in-form Ligue 1 side. ............

Much like Lille, Juventus also has six points to their name after a solid start to their season in all competitions. A solid victory at home over PSV Eindhoven opened the Bianconeri’s account in the Champions League, followed by a stellar game away at Leipzig, where they converted their chances for a 3-2 reverse win.

However, at the third time of asking, Juventus fumbled at home against VfB Stuttgart, handing the visitors all three points. Thiago Motta will be hopeful of a revival against ‘giant hunters’ Lille, with the need for three points growing extremely important in the context of finishing in the top eight.

Back in Italy, Juventus ended a run of two draws with a victory at the weekend over Udinese, which brought them closer to leaders Napoli. However, Motta will focus his total attention on the Champions League battle at hand, as a win seems imperative for the Bianconeri, or else they will come under intense pressure ahead of the next games.

Team News & Tactics

LOSC Lille

 ............

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Chevalier; Toure, Diakite, Mandi, Gudmundsson; Andre, Mukau; Zhegrova, Gomes, Sahraoui; David

d1HrDeoxFt2w0m1uG66C.png

Juventus

Juventus is missing some key starters from the squad, and defensive depth is a big problem for Motta. Federico Gatti and Pierre Kalulu are the likely central defensive options. Nicolo Savona and Andrea Cambiaso.

They are missing Gleison Bremer through a season-ending injury, while fellow Danilo is suspended for this clash. Weston McKennie will partner up with Nicolo Fagioli in central midfield, while Teun Koopmeiners is set to take the attacking midfield berth.

Nico Gonzalez is also absent from the squad, meaning Francisco Conceicao will continue on the right wing, with Kenan Yildiz likely to feature on the left side of the attack. Dusan Vlahovic will lead the line for Juventus, as the Serb will hope to get on the scoresheet and continue his impressive form in the Champions League.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso; McKennie, Fagioli, Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

63YXTWbKbYepmxHXpz7L.png

Key Stats

  • Lille are unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions.
  • Lille have won their last two games in the UEFA Champions League.
  • Lille have won eight of their nine matches at home in the UEFA Champions League.
  • Juventus are unbeaten away from home this season in all competitions.
  • Juventus are the only unbeaten team in Serie A this season.

Player to Watch

Jonathan David

This is a game where some of the top professionals will take the pitch. However, at home, Lille star David will have all the spotlight to himself. Having played a starring role in each of their wins over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, he will have expectations on his shoulders ahead of this big game with Juventus. ............

Prediction

LOSC Lille 2-2 Juventus

This game has all the hallmarks for a draw, as these are two teams in decent form facing each other, although Lille has some more impetus on home soil. They have the momentum in the UEFA Champions League and will want to continue that against Juventus.

Juventus might have lost the last time out to VfB Stuttgart, and Thiago Motta will make sure they do not suffer a defeat on their visit to France. Hence, this game might have goals, and it does appear that, given the two teams’ current form, it will probably end in an entertaining draw.

The probable Juventus lineup vs Lille: Yildiz & Weah vying for starting berth

Yildiz-inter-milan.jpg

On Tuesday night, Juventus will be aiming to return to winning ways on the European stage when they take on their hosts Lille on the fourth matchday of the Champions League group stage. ............

Michele Di Gregorio will start between the sticks, with Federico Gatti and Pierre Kalulu ahead of him.

Andrea Cambiaso will maintain his usual starting berth, but could be shifted to right-back to make way for Juan Cabal on the left side. The Colombian appears to be the favorite to start, but the source leaves a chance for Nicolo Savona.

In the middle of the park, Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram should get the nod once again. ............

Teun Koopmeiners will start ahead of them in the attacking-midfielder role, supporting Dusan Vlahovic who remains the solitary option to lead the line.

Finally, Francisco Conceicao will make his return to the starting XI after being benched on the weekend. With the Portuguese locking down a place on the right, Kenan Yildiz and Timothy will compete for the left-winger role.

Juventus Probable XI (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Cambiaso, Gatti, Kalulu, Cabal (Savona); Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz/Weah; Vlahovic.

Ex-Juventus midfielder warns them against giant-killing Lille

champions league

Juventus faces a challenging task in the Champions League as they prepare to take on Lille away. With two wins and one loss in the group stage so far, Juventus has managed a strong start, but their defeat to Stuttgart was a sobering reminder of the competition’s intensity. Lille, on the other hand, has proven themselves formidable, dispatching Fenerbahce in the qualifying round and notching victories over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the group stage, showcasing their knack for unsettling high-profile opponents. ............

Vladimir Jugovic, a former Juventus star, issued a word of caution for his former club, acknowledging Lille’s prowess. He drew a parallel between this clash and a memorable Champions League encounter in 1996 against Nantes, another French side. “Watch out for Lille,” Jugovic warned, as reported by Tuttojuve. “Juventus in the Champions League against a French team reminds me of my goal against Nantes. Lille beat Real Madrid and Atletico, Juve have been warned. But if you win these games, especially away from home, you come out of it more aware and stronger.” He also expressed confidence in Juventus’s potential under Motta, praising their performance in Leipzig and suggesting they have the resilience to match Lille’s intensity. ............

Motta set for his 14th different formation in 15 games

La metamorfosi di Thiago Motta: così ha cambiato la Juve | Gazzetta.it

Thiago Motta’s tactical approach at Juventus has quickly garnered attention, establishing him as a “tinkerer” unafraid to experiment with lineups and formations to bring Juventus back to prominence in Italian football. Since taking the reins, Motta has embraced a flexible, adaptive style, shifting his lineup and formation regularly. In the 14 games under his leadership, he has deployed 13 different formations, and he’s likely to introduce a new system against Lille, marking his 14th formation in 15 matches.

This constant reshuffling started in his very first game when he made the surprising decision to start young Samuel Mbangula. The choice raised eyebrows, but Motta defended it, asserting that every player who performs well in training deserves a chance on the pitch. ............

Motta’s adaptability keeps Juventus unpredictable, a quality that served him well at Bologna. His willingness to adjust tactics based on opponents and match contexts makes it challenging for rivals to strategise against Juventus effectively. This unpredictability was key to his success at Bologna, and Juventus fans are hopeful that it will continue to yield positive results for their team as well. ............

As Juventus faces Lille, a team known for upsetting European heavyweights, Motta’s approach could be especially beneficial. His tinkering keeps his lineup unpredictable, which will be vital in countering Lille’s game plan.

Juventus tame giant-killing Lille with draw in France

Vlahovic Lille

Juventus secured a 1-1 draw against Lille in the Champions League this evening, ensuring the Ligue 1 side couldn’t add them to their list of big-name victims.

Lille set the tone early, with Jonathan David firing a warning shot that signalled their intent. Having already defeated Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, Lille’s threat was well known, and Juventus came prepared.

The Bianconeri quickly showed they hadn’t travelled to France to lose, with Dusan Vlahovic finding the net—only for it to be ruled offside.

Lille responded immediately as David scored with a sharp finish, giving them the lead. ............

After the break, Juve continued pressing for an equaliser, while Lille remained composed, solid in and out of possession. A brilliant moment from Francisco Conceicao earned Juve a penalty, which Vlahovic confidently converted to level the score. ............

In the end, both teams fought hard but couldn’t find a decisive goal, sharing the points in a well-contested draw.

Juventus 1 - Lille 1: Initial reaction and random observations

LOSC Lille v Juventus - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4

 ............

In the next few hours and probably days, Juventus players and coaches alike are going to be thinking that Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Lille should have been more than just a European fixture in which they picked up a single point.

Not with the chances they had.

Not with the way they played.

And certainly not with how they prevented Lille from doing much of anything for large stretches of this Matchday 4 matchup.

These nights happen, though. Juventus could have easily had three goals before the first half, but Teun Koopmeiners was twice robbed of his first goal in bianconero (or bright yellow?) thanks to another one of his teammates being offside just seconds before the Dutchman put the ball into the back of the net, while Dusan Vlahovic saw LIlle keeper Lucas Chevalier make a great reflex save at the near post 10 minutes before halftime. ............

But because of this game sometimes providing Juventus with absolutely terrible luck, they were down 1-0 at the half thanks to a picture-perfect counterattack rather than being up by two or three goals and reflecting how well they were playing for much of the opening 45 minutes. ............

The team that played better Tuesday was very easy to see, and it wasn’t the squad that already has wins in the Champions League over Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. And so much of the second half, Juventus had Lille pinned back and it just felt like it was only a matter of time before they actually scored.

The problem was, with all of the terrible luck in the first half, Dusan Vlahovic’s penalty at the hour mark tied the game rather than extend Juve’s lead. there were plenty of chances after that, too, but one of Juventus’ biggest problems this season — finishing chances in the final third — popped up once again.

That’s why I feel like with how they played, so much of the Juventus camp will think they should have won with the way they played on the whole. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • OK, you can keep wearing the yellow jersey if you keep getting results and playing well. I’ll allow it in that case.
  • One of Lille’s starting center backs is named Alexsandro and it made me laugh every single time I heard it. ............
  • Kenan Yildiz won’t be turning 20 years old until early May and is usually the youngest player on the field. That wasn’t the case Tuesday night — and by a couple of years. Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi turned 17 all of a month ago and that is just crazy to think about.
  • Chevalier is one of the best young keepers in Europe, but he has the last name that makes it sound like he’s the heir to a massive family business in the perfume or champagne industry.
  • Jokes aside, that save from Chevalier on Vlahovic was really pretty damn good. ............
  • Something tells me Juan Cabal is going to be happy to be done with trying to defend Edon Zhegrova because whoa boy that sure was a one-sided individual duel that did not favor the guy wearing bright yellow.
  • That through ball from Zhegrova to David on the Lille goal was so perfectly placed and timed even better. At the exact moment that Pierre Kalulu is just out of reach of the ball — even with his momentum going in the complete opposite direction — is when it gets through and David is clear on goal. Frustrating to concede that way? Yes, but that was really well executed. ............
  • The second half, though, that was the Conceição we’ve gotten used to during his short Juve career. I’ve said it more than once and I’ll say it again: Chico’s gotta be such a pest to play against. He’s a damn mosquito that keeps buzzing your ear no matter what you do.
  • That was a cold blooded PK from Vlahovic, too. (His PKs have been pretty good this season!) Not a bad PK to sink for your 50th goal at Juventus.
  • Eventually one of those pullbacks to Koopmeiners is going to hit (and actually count because there’s nobody actually offsides) and there is going to be a collective “FINALLY!!!!” screamed in so many different languages.
  • So, are we ready to call it that the Plan B to Vlahovic playing up top is Yildiz playing up top as a false-ish 9? I know it wasn’t for very long against Lille, but it feels like it’s going that way. ............
  • Juventus attempted 25 crosses against Lille. They completed two of them. Not great.
  • Lille attempted one cross. They completed it. Perfection, my friends, that’s what it looks like.
  • Juventus passes completed: 559
  • Lille passes completed: 261 ............
  • Juventus finished with 1.39 xG against Lille. Wonder what it would have looked like if either (or both) of Koopmeiners’ goals that was chalked off for offsides actually counted. ............

Juventus play better than Lille, but don’t get the luck in Champions League draw

Juve were in control for much of the match, but a succession of bad breaks saw them only take home a point from France.

Lille v Juventus - UEFA Champions League

There are some days when the breaks simply don’t go your way.

That’s exactly how Juventus must have been feeling as they went into the locker room at halftime of their Champions League match at Lille.

They were down 1-0, but with a few small breaks they could’ve easily been three goals to the good. Teun Koopmeiners in particular must’ve been pulling his hair out — he’d made two clinical finishes from the middle of the penalty area, only to see the goals chalked off because the teammate who pulled the ball back to him was offside. In between an excellent finish by Dusan Vlahovic was repelled by a remarkable save from Lucas Chevalier.

The Bianconeri didn’t let the bad luck phase them and dominated in the second half. They finally equalized from the spot through Vlahovic at the hour mark, and continued to push for a winner. They were the better side for much of the night, but the last bounce never went their way, and they had to head home from the north of France with only one point. ............

The game seemed relatively even, with Juve having more possession but Lille still posing a threat, mainly through Zhegrova, who routinely cooked Cabal on the left flank.

But in the 24th minute, it looked like Juve had broken through. After forcing a turnover in Lille’s half, Yildiz sent Vlahovic to the byline, and the striker pulled back for Koopmeiners, who had made a great run to stay in free space and easily stroked it home — only to see the flag going up, the assistant having correctly caught Vlahovic a step offside.

They would rue that missed opportunity. Three minutes later, after Conceição was stopped trying to cut inside, Zhegrova was sent on the counter and once again blew past Cabal, then found David, who had broken into open space down the right side. Kalulu had completely lost him, and added insult to ineptitude when he fell on his face trying to readjust in a desperate attempt to stop Zhegrova’s pass. He didn’t, and the sought-after Canadian striker was 1-on-1 with Di Gregorio, zipping the ball over his shoulder and into the net to give Lille a lead that was, in the end, against the run of play. ............

Lille v Juventus - UEFA Champions League

They started the second half clearly believing it. They dominated possession and sealed the home side in their half. ............

So dominant was Juve’s start that Génésio saw fit to make some changes within 10 minutes to try to stabilize things. Lille managed to relieve the pressure slightly, but in the 58th minute Conceição tried to slither between two defenders in the box and was rather blatantly taken down by André, leaving Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto with little to ponder as he pointed to the spot. Vlahovic set the ball down, and got Chevalier to bite just enough on his stutter-step run-up to roll it into the left side of the goal without any trouble. ............

UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League phase 4Lille OSC v Juventus FC

LE PAGELLE

MICHELE DI GREGORIO - 6. ............

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. Played well defensively — although he too was burned by Zhegrova a few times after he moved to the left side later on in the match — and got very involved in the attack, although he couldn’t create much on his own.

FEDERICO GATTI - 6.  ............

PIERRE KALULU - 5. Kalulu has played great this season, but that kind of defensive failure cannot happen at this level. He completely lost David behind him on the goal, then compounded his failure by falling on his face trying to recover. The goal is on his shoulders more than anyone else’s.

JUAN CABAL - 5. Probably headed to the locker room extra crispy, because he got roasted repeatedly by Zhegrova. He wasn’t the only one that had problems containing him, but it was a constant issue — including allowing him to make his turn before he assisted David — to the point where he booked and had to be removed lest one more torching lead to a second yellow.

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 7.  ............

KHEPHREN THURAM - 6.  ............

FRANCISCO CONCEIÇÃO - 6. Wasn’t as dangerous in the first half as he was in the second. His willingness to dribble at a defender (or multiple defenders) is useful, but he does need to have a little more awareness of when he might need to pass the ball instead. That dribbling did get the penalty though, although his overall pass completion (82.9 percent) left a little to be desired, and he was 0-7 on crosses.

TEUN KOOPMEINERS - 6.5. At some point one of these balls will end up in the net for real. The fact that the movement he had on both of those goals finally came is a good sign, though. He’s been missing a little something playing around the box until today. He also led the team with four tackles, and had a key pass.

KENAN YILDIZ - 6. Co-led the team with three dribbles and made a pair of key passes, but only completed 72.4 percent of his passes overall. Dropped back to help against Zhergova when he needed it, making three tackles on defense.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6.5. Cool as you like on the penalty, and overall had a really good day. He moved well and looked confident in taking shots early, one of which was denied by a top-drawer save in the first half. Surprising he was subbed out, but the dude must be absolutely gassed right now having played as the only center-forward the team’s had all season.

SUBS

NICOLO SAVONA - 5.5.  ............

WESTON McKENNIE - 5.5.  ............

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5.5.  ............

SAMUEL MBANGULA - NR.  ............

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Motta got a lot of things right against Lille, he just didn’t have the luck. It’s encouraging that through balls and other attacks through the middle have started coming over the last few games, becuase the team was starting to get predictable in its over-reliance on wing play. Especially good was the way Koopmeiners was brought into play on those cutbacks. He has a great ability to float in space and keep himself open during plays like that, and incorporating those movements into the attack will make the team more multiple and make Koopmeiners just that more dangerous.

Defensively, things are starting to tighten up. The pairing of Gatti and Kalulu is clearly the way forward in the middle of defense. It’s a little worrying how badly Cabal was abused by Zhergova, though, especially considering the quality of some of the wide players that Juve are going to have to go against in this competition. But overall the defense worked very well, Kalulu’s egregious error on the goal aside.

But perhaps the biggest part of this for Motta is the way the team has responded mentality-wise. Juve’s last game in this competition was not acceptable, and much like the game over the weekend against Udinese, they had the look of players who understood that and were determined to make up for it. Unlike in Udine, their luck was piss-poor, and there is the feeling that the team left something on the table given the way the game went, but the fact that Motta has been able to take a team that had turned in such a weak performance their last time out in the competition and refocus them is a huge mark in his favor and a real sign that he’s getting buy-in from these players.

LOOKING AHEAD

Just one more game before the international break, as Juve welcome Torino to the Allianz for the season’s first Derby della Mole.

Motta proud of Juventus’ performance vs. Lille, but ‘wanted a different result’

The Juve manager shares his thoughts after the Bianconeri’s draw with Lille in France.

Thiago Motta: ' Satisfied with Juventus performance, but 1-1 not result we wanted '

As Thiago Motta walked off the field Tuesday night at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Northern France, he was very much defiant that his Juventus squad played quite well against Lille as they hit the midway point of the Champions League’s new-look “league phase.”

There was just one catch: his team didn’t win. They didn’t lose, but they didn’t win, either.

The 1-1 draw with Lille — one of the biggest surprise teams in the Champions League so far this season — saw a much-improved performance from Motta’s squad the last time they played in Europe, but ultimately Juventus’ attack could only muster a second-half penalty kick from Dusan Vlahovic to pull even.

“We wanted a different result and created the opportunities to get that, but I am happy with the performance. We can improve certain things, but overall I am satisfied with the way the team played,” Motta said. “We certainly could’ve done better in the final third, though the quality of our football improved in the second half. It was clear from the start that Juve would defend and try to counter-attack, so we had to stop them doing that. Lille know what they are doing, are full of confidence at the moment, but it was a great performance from my lads. Now we have to recover our energy and prepare for the derby.” ............

As Motta noted, he expected Lille to play exactly how they did — to defend well and hit Juventus on the counter.

And it was one of those counters — aided by some questionable Juventus defending — that put Lille ahead thanks to Jonathan David’s 27th-minute goal.

“Goals come from mistakes and we can cut those down by being more aggressive when we lose the ball,” Motta said. I saw greater balance today, it was tough for us to push through the middle today because Lille were closing up all the spaces, so we had to attack wide with the wingers and also the fullbacks overlapping.

“I am pleased with the performance and our next match is a derby, so we want to play it at our best. I saw good progress.” ............

“I think we had the game under control on a difficult pitch against a team that plays very well,” Motta said. “We were aggressive, we could have won it especially after we equalized. It’s a pity we weren’t able to. ............

“They are two points lost.” Santarelli reacts to Juventus draw against Lille

Teun Koopmeiners in azione nella sfida contro il LilleLille vs Juventus | UEFA Champions League 2024/25 | UEFA.com

Alessandro Santarelli offered a mixed assessment of Juventus’ performance in their 1-1 Champions League draw with Lille, recognising the team’s positive moments but also highlighting missed opportunities. ............

While the draw is not a poor result given Lille’s strong form, it doesn’t guarantee Juventus the comfort they need to advance smoothly in the league stage. Santarelli noted that Juve performed well overall, pressing in the opponent’s half and creating chances. ............

Santarelli’s comment captures his ambivalence: “I struggle to comment on this match, because I can’t see if the glass is half full or half empty. Half full because the team played the match, played in the opponent’s half, created and did well. Half empty because we conceded a goal due to a lack of concentration… And then the standings… we are in a sort of limbo.” ............

Torino suffers early injury problem ahead of their game against Juventus

109344_001.JPG

Torino faces a challenging test against Juventus this weekend, compounded by the potential absence of Che Adams. The Scotland international, who joined Torino in the summer, has quickly become a vital asset for the team, contributing significantly to their promising start this season. His skill, work rate, and experience have strengthened Torino’s forward line, making him a near-guaranteed starter whenever available. Consequently, his injury is a considerable setback for Il Toro, especially ahead of a crucial clash with one of Serie A’s top teams. ............

Adams is “far from ready” to play, though Torino’s medical team is doing everything possible to expedite his recovery. Without Adams, Torino may need to adjust their approach, possibly emphasising a more defensive setup to counter Juventus’s offensive strengths. ............

Historically, Juventus has enjoyed a favourable record in this fixture, but they cannot afford complacency. Missing one key player does not define a match, and Torino, likely eager to compensate for Adams’ absence, may raise their level of play. Juventus’s commitment to a disciplined approach will be essential to ensure they capitalise on any weaknesses Torino might exhibit without Adams. ............

Preview: Juventus vs. Torino - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs Torino Prediction and Betting Tips

Aiming to continue their long dominance of the Turin derby, Serie A giants Juventus will host city rivals Torino on Saturday evening.

After a midweek draw in Europe, Juve now seek a 19th straight game without defeat to their neighbours, which would extend a record run in the Derby della Mole.

Match preview

Juventus fought back to earn a Champions League draw in Lille on Tuesday night, as Dusan Vlahovic scored his 50th goal for the club by converting a penalty after Francisco Conceicao tumbled to the turf.

Despite coming away with just one point, Juve are within two of the top eight midway through the competition's new league phase, which keeps them in the mix for automatic entry to the last 16.

However, the Bianconeri only occupy sixth place in the Serie A standings, having lost a little momentum of late.

Thiago Motta's men trailed by two in a frantic Derby d'Italia before drawing 4-4 with Inter Milan late last month; then, they twice came from behind to salvage a point against promoted Parma.

Last week, they steadied the ship by beating Udinese 2-0 to remain the only undefeated team in Italy's top flight - albeit having drawn more than half of their 11 league games so far.

Since the start of April, Juventus have not lost once in 19 Serie A fixtures - of which a dozen have ended all-square - so they are currently on the longest unbeaten streak across Europe's top five leagues.

They have also kept a clean sheet on 12 occasions during that run, including a 0-0 draw with Torino - that was their first failure to beat the old enemy since 2022. ............

Team News

Thiago Motta is sure to make changes to his starting lineup for the Turin derby, following a busy run of fixtures on two fronts - Tim WeahWeston McKennie and young full-back Nicolo Savona are all pushing for promotion from the bench.

Juventus will be missing one defender, Bremer - who was recently ruled out for the rest of the season - but Danilo is back in the fold after serving a UEFA suspension.

Another Brazil international, Douglas Luiz, returned from injury earlier this week; that still leaves Nico Gonzalez (thigh) and Arkadiusz Milik (knee) on the treatment table. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Savona, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli; Conceicao, McKennie, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Torino possible starting lineup:
Milinkovic-Savic; Coco, Maripan, Masina; Pedersen, Ilic, Ricci, Vlasic, Lazaro; Njie, Sanabria

We say: Juventus 2-0 Torino

Juventus have conceded the fewest shots in total (93) and on target (27) in Serie A thus far, while Torino have conceded the most overall (188).

That points to a comfortable home win for derby dominators Juve, who must surely keep another clean sheet against Toro's ailing attack.

What is Juventus target for their Champions League campaign?

Juve celebrating against Leipzig

Juventus, as Italy’s most successful football club, has ambitious goals for the season across multiple competitions. While winning the Serie A title is always a primary objective, the club also aims to excel in other tournaments, including the Champions League, Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana. Although they may not be the outright favourites to win the Champions League, Juventus’s history and reputation make them a team that commands respect in Europe. This season, they have shown potential in the competition, beginning with two victories in their first two matches, though their recent lack of wins in the last two games, including a home loss to Stuttgart, has tempered initial optimism.

Juventus’s recent financial updates reveal that progressing in the Champions League is also critical from an economic perspective. Juventus has set reaching the knockout phase as their minimum goal for the European campaign. Success in the Champions League brings significant financial rewards, including broadcasting revenue and prize money, which are particularly important to the club’s finances. ............

The Champions League’s new format adds a level of unpredictability, and while Juventus may not have the depth or financial muscle of some of Europe’s biggest spenders, they possess the talent and experience needed to make a competitive run. Reaching the knockout stages is an achievable objective and would allow them to continue competing at the highest level while building confidence for future seasons. ............

Serie A Preview: Juventus vs Torino – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

Juventus_Torino_Preview.jpg

Saturday’s Serie A action caps off at the Allianz Stadium with the latest edition of the famous Derby della Mole between Juventus and Torino. A fixture traditionally dominated by the home side catches two teams in conflicting spirits.

Juventus hauled back a halftime deficit to draw 1-1 at Lille in midweek UEFA Champions League action. Dusan Vlahovic’s second-half penalty spared Bianconeri’s blushes in France, guiding them to a third stalemate across their last four competitive outings.

That’s been a recurring theme for Juventus under Thiago Motta’s stewardship. They’ve drawn Serie A’s joint-high six matches this season, hence a four-point gap on table-topping Napoli despite Motta’s unbeaten league start in Turin (W5, D6). ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Juventus have rarely relinquished their stranglehold on this match-up. Since 1995, they’ve only lost one of their 38 encounters against Torino in all competitions (W28, D9). That run includes a comfortable 2-0 victory in this corresponding fixture last term.

But there’s no room for complacency, considering the last Serie A meeting in April ended 0-0. The narrative has been quite different at this stadium, where Juventus have netted multiple goals en route to victory in four out of five top-flight clashes against Torino since 2020 (D1).

Against this backdrop, Motta’s charges have only registered one triumph in their last five competitive games on home turf (D3, L1). Even so, after beating Udinese, Juventus could rack up back-to-back Serie A wins for the first time since the opening two rounds.

Motta will put his trust in an almost impregnable backline that had only conceded once in four home league outings before a goal-glutted 2-2 draw against newly promoted Parma last time out.

Torino

 ............

Team News

Juventus cannot call upon the services of Arkadiusz Milik, Paul Pogba, Gleison Bremer, and Nicolas Gonzalez. However, Motta has welcomed star midfielders Douglas Luiz and Teun Koopmeiners back from injuries, with the former likely to stay on the bench in favor of Weston McKennie. ............

Juventus vs Torino Potential Starting Line-ups

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Michele Di Gregorio; Nicolo Savona, Pierre Kalulu, Federico Gatti, Andrea Cambiaso; Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli; Francisco Conceicao, Teun Koopmeiners, Kenan Yildiz; Dusan Vlahovic.

Torino (3-5-2): Vanja Milinkovic-Savic; Saul Coco, Guillermo Maripan, Adam Masina; Marcus Pedersen, Ivan Ilic, Samuele Ricci, Nikola Vlasic, Valentino Lazaro; Alieu Njie, Antonio Sanabria.

Juventus vs Torino Prediction

With Torino terminally unable to score without Zapata, Juventus’ sturdy defense could have a field day on Saturday. However, goals have been at a premium for Motta’s team lately, leading us to believe a single ball in the visitors’ net could settle this city derby.

Prediction: Juventus to Win

Angelo Di Livio expects Juventus to face a tough test against Torino

basicpress.com

Juventus is set to face Torino in a highly anticipated derby this weekend, promising an intense matchup as both teams strive to impress their fans. While Juventus has been strong domestically, remaining unbeaten in the league, they have had a frustrating number of draws. Their supporters are eager for a decisive win and hope to avoid yet another stalemate against their city rivals, Il Toro.

Torino had a promising start to the season, but their recent form has faltered, with four losses in their last five games, including consecutive defeats in their most recent outings. Juventus will be looking to capitalise on this downturn and hand Torino a third successive loss. ............

Former Juventus midfielder Angelo Di Livio, who understands the complexities of derby matches, cautions that Juventus should not underestimate Torino despite their recent struggles. Di Livio believes that Torino’s poor form could make them even more dangerous opponents in this high-stakes match. Di Livio commented, “There are always many pitfalls in a derby, also because Toro is not going through a happy moment and for this reason will be even more poisoned. Juve will have to try to play an intelligent game to overcome this obstacle.” ............

Thiago Motta: “I want to stay at Juventus for a long time. Derby? we’ll give 200%”

La conferenza stampa di Thiago Motta alla vigilia di Juventus-Como - YouTube

Ahead of the Turin derby between Juventus and Torino, Juventus manager Thiago Motta addressed the media in a pre-match press conference. ............

Motta opened the conference by emphasizing the importance of the derby: “I have good feelings, we are ready to go all out and play a great game. It will be a great atmosphere for us and our fans.” ............

“The team is physically very well. We’ve had three days of recovery and it’s important, it makes a difference. I see the team very well. I have confidence in everyone’s commitment, from the start and during the game. Everyone will give 200%.” ............

“Since I started my career in football, I’ve been fortunate to live in great cities and play for great teams. The same is true today, I can’t ask for anything more. Douglas Luiz? I requested that he be present for the match against Lille. In the last training sessions, he still didn’t feel 100%, so I don’t want to risk him, we’ll see in the next few days, same for Nico Gonzalez. It will take time for Bremer and Milik. Adzic won’t be available against Torino either.” ............

Motta concluded by addressing his future at Juventus: “I’m not just passing through at Juventus, I want to stay for many years. But I don’t even think about these things, I work on a daily basis. I try to do the right things trying to put the best on the field.”

Juventus claim a comfortable Derby della Mole win over Torino

Weah and Yildiz goals earn Juventus 2-0 derby win over Torino | Reuters

Juventus secured a 2-0 win against Torino this evening, returning to winning form after their midweek Champions League draw at Lille.

Juventus started well against an out-of-form Torino but initially struggled to find the net in the early stages of the game.

However, they broke through before the 20-minute mark. Timothy Weah was in the right place to turn in a rebound, putting Juventus in the lead. ............

Torino didn’t put up enough of a fight to make the game particularly engaging.

This gave Juve the chance to extend their lead. Weah had the ball in the net a second time, but the goal was ruled out due to a handball.

Thiago Motta then brought on Francisco Conceicao, who assisted Juventus’ second goal with a fine cross for Kenan Yildiz to finish. ............
