Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato February 11 Champions League | Juventus 2-1 PSV: Slight advantage after first leg Juventus take a narrow lead with them into the second leg of the Champions League play-off thanks to Weston McKennie and Samuel Mbangula around Ivan Perisic’s temporary PSV Eindhoven equaliser. These sides had already met in the league phase, with the Bianconeri winning here 3-1 on September 17, and the second leg of the play-off is on February 19. ............ Federico Gatti created the opening goal, as he battled down the right first to pull it back from the by-line, then to win it again and set up the McKennie right-foot scorcher into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. The USMNT midfielder had also scored when Juve beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 here in September 2024. ............ However, PSV Eindhoven equalised when Perisic sold Kelly a dummy to cut inside and drill hard and low with his left foot into the near bottom corner. Juve complained that there was a possible Lang handling offence in the build-up, but the VAR check considered it insufficient to disallow the goal. Juve restored their advantage with another strong run down the right flank, this time from Francisco Conceicao whose low effort was parried with one glove at the near post by Benitez, only into the path of Mbangula to turn in the rebound from seven yards. Juventus 2-1 PSV Eindhoven McKennie 34 (J), Perisic 56 (P), Mbangula 82 (J) . Juventus began as the better side, forcing Walter Benítez into making some important saves early on. They had beaten PSV in an earlier game in the same competition this season and looked likely to do so again as the Dutch side struggled for control. ............ The Old Lady then earned a deserved lead through Weston McKennie, who rifled a volley home from the edge of the box, thanks to some fine work from Federico Gatti. ............ At the break, Juve were ahead, and Thiago Motta replaced the ineffective Kenan Yıldız with Samuel Mbangula at halftime. ............ PSV then drew level through Ivan Perišić as Juventus players protested for a handball in the build-up, but a VAR check never spotted it, and the goal was given. ............ Dušan Vlahović was also brought on, but it was Mbangula who scored the goal to make it 2-1. PSV put in a fine effort and began to threaten the Bianconeri again as they searched for an equaliser, but Juve held on to win the game. . McKennie scored then too and broke through today on the half-volley from Federico Gatti’s assist, before ex-Inter winger Ivan Perisic drew level by turning Lloyd Kelly. ............ “It was a good goal, I think I scored better against Barcelona in 2020. I was really lucky!”. “I was calm, because last week in training I scored lots of goals on all the training exercises, so I felt pretty confident, even if it doesn’t count to score there. It was a bit of luck because I assumed I’d hit someone in the box. “The important thing isn’t scoring a goal or providing an assist, but helping the team to get the victory.” ............ “It was so important, because Juventus is a big club, a great team and we need to sacrifice everything. When we are up against a team with a lot of talent that plays well, we have to run hard, go into the tackle and leave everything on the pitch. That is what we did today and I think it showed, the way we pressed in attack, even Gatti was pushing forward to win the ball back many times. ............ “We always talk in the locker room, in training and during the match. When we score the first goal, we seem to relax and sit back, but the coach always tells us, do not change your attitude. Keep going forward, keep pressing, it is very important to score the second goal and carry on playing with confidence. We’ve got to do better in that area. . Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato February 12 Juventus 2 - PSV Eindhoven 1: Initial reaction and random observations Juve get the edge in the first leg thanks to a late goal from Samuel Mbangula with less than 10 minutes to go. By simple virtue of how this 2024-25 season has gone for Juventus, seeing them predicted to win — be it against somebody in the Champions League or a lower-table side in Serie A — is always going to be a bit a puzzling thought. ............ The way in which Juve got there Tuesday night against PSV Eindhoven certainly wasn’t to many our liking after Weston McKennie’s thunderbolt to open the scoring in the first half. But, after the reigning Dutch champions tied things up and then looked like the much better side after the scoreline was suddenly even, Juventus found just enough to get back in front and secure a slim lead in their favor to take with them to the Netherlands next week. It was thanks to Samuel Mbangula’s first-ever Champions League goal, an 82nd-minute strike after a bit of a scramble in the PSV box to give Juve a 2-1 victory at the Allianz. With his game-winning goal against PSV, Mbangula became the youngest player to ever score in a UCL knockout round tie for Juventus. Not bad for a young Belgian kid who was playing in Serie C at this point of the season 12 months ago. ............ This UCL play-off round is very much about trying to survive to get to the next round where they will meet either Arsenal or Inter Milan. And they have a slim advantage in the back pocket as they prepare to meet PSV once again in eight days at their place. This was a better Juventus than what we saw the last time they were on their home field in the Champions League. It was that performance against Benfica in which was the fear that it would be repeated again and would allow PSV to stroll into Turin, build an aggregate lead and be in great shape heading into the return leg in the Netherlands. But it was also a Juventus that still clearly had its flaws. They couldn’t take advantage of their bright start that saw them pinning PSV back for the opening 15 minutes. It was only after PSV started to really find their footing that McKennie was able to connect with that hammer of a shot with his right foot to put Juve in front. Then, as usual, it came down to how Juve would handle being in front — and, as we’ve almost come to expect, it didn’t go all that well. Neither did the subsequent time after the PSV goal in which Juve were really looking like they were going to fall behind. Thankfully, that never happened. And then, very much out of nowhere, Mbangula popped up in the box and put Juventus back in front. Juventus were not great on the whole, but they did just enough Tuesday night to get past PSV. ............ RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS That goal of McKennie sure was something. You just can’t strike a ball any better than that. Nobody had a chance of stopping that shot. There was just so much damn velocity on it that you have absolutely no chance of keeping it out of the goal. And guess what? It was almost like it went right through any sort of effort to stop the ball from PSV keeper Walter Benitez. ............ Let’s not forget what Federico Gatti did on that goal to make it happen, too. Not all did a galloping run forward start the sequence in which McKennie scored on, but Gatti also kept the whole thing alive right before the ball came out to Wes as well. It was Gatti, a man who loves to get forward but doesn’t always execute well in the final third, having quite the impact quite far away from where he’s usually parked on the field. Gatti on the defensive end of the field was pretty damn solid, too. He was much happier to hold the UEFA man of the match award this time around as compared to a few weeks ago after the draw with Club Brugge. Is Renato Veiga getting better as he settles in at Juventus and alongside Gatti? Because that was his best game as a Juve player and he was just a solid presence at the back. Seeing Veiga celebrate a big block like he did in the second was pretty great, too. There’s just something about Juventus defenders who truly love to defend and want you to know it when they do something well. Plus, Veiga was 11-of-14 on the long balls he attempted, so the passing was pretty solid, too. Not as great? Lloyd Kelly getting absolutely turned around like he did on Ivan Perisic’s goal to tie things up. I understand that he is very much not a natural left back and there probably should have been some help there from somebody like Mbangula, but the individual defensive work from Kelly continues to leave a lot to be desired. ............ Is something up with Khephren Thuram physically? Because I feel like the fact that he’s suddenly not starting on a regular basis is because of that rather than actual something to do with how he’s playing. He’s Juve’s best midfielder at the moment, and seeing him come off the bench in a big Champions League matchup like this was just felt a little off. That being said, Douglas Luiz was pretty solid agianst PSV. I’ll take it. Randal Kolo Muani didn’t score? What a terrible signing that now suddenly is. (Please pick up the sarcasm. The last thing I need is for somebody from Camp Kolo Muani to get mad.) Honestly, just glad Juventus didn’t toss the lead completely away. It was nothing like what we saw the first time around against PSV, but I don’t think anybody really expected that considering the current state of Juventus. They got the win, they’re up on aggregate, and now we get to see what they’ll do on Dutch soil next week. The Old Lady, as the most successful club in Italian football, is always expected to win trophies. This pressure to succeed is constant, even when the team has a new coach or a host of new players, as is the case this season. Juventus’ reputation as a dominant force in the sport means that they are held to the highest standards, and fans expect nothing less than victory in every match. ............ The pressure on Juventus to perform is immense, and it seems as though the fans expect perfection in every aspect of the team’s play. However, journalist Paolo Rossi has weighed in on the situation, offering a more measured perspective. In a recent interview Rossi stated: “It’s useless to think that the current Juve can reach levels of perfection. So it’s very good that they win by a narrow margin, even with strong technical limitations, but with everything needed to achieve an important result.” ............ The current Juventus team, while certainly talented, is still a work in progress. They may not be the perfect team that their supporters hope for, but they have the potential to achieve success nonetheless. Ultimately, Juventus fans just want their team to perform better and win more games this season. Despite the challenges they face, there is still hope that they can turn things around and achieve their goals for the campaign. . With Napoli looking nearly unstoppable in the Serie A title race, Inter must secure a victory over Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, something they failed to achieve in the reverse fixture earlier this season. In that encounter, Inter was in control with a 4-2 lead, but they allowed Juventus to make a dramatic comeback, with the game ending 4-4 in front of a stunned San Siro crowd. ............ At the moment, however, Inter is missing some key players, including Thuram and Arnautovic. This match is a crucial one for the Bianconeri, as they look to maintain their recent momentum and secure another victory. Most people could think winning four in a row does not matter much because the Bianconeri are still far from the top of the standings. However, when the opponent is Inter Milan, it is a big deal. A win in this fixture would not just be about adding three more points to their tally; it would be a statement of intent and a massive confidence boost for the squad. ............ They are in a good position as Inter comes to town for a big test, which is one that they have to pass. The atmosphere will be intense, and the expectations from the fans will be high. Winning this game would not only keep their good run going but also prove that they can compete in the toughest matches. Winning or losing that game will define their season. If Juve wins that match, they do not just get three points; their confidence will also skyrocket, and the players will feel they can beat anyone. That self-belief is vital as they head into the final phase of the campaign. However, if the Bianconeri are beaten at home, they will take a beating to their confidence, which will spill over to the other games. This is a crucial period, and a loss could derail their progress. They must ensure that does not happen. ............ . This historic rivalry always carries high stakes, and with both clubs fighting for crucial points, this encounter will be no different. In the reverse fixture during the first half of the season, Juve looked to be down and out as the game headed towards a 4-2 win for Inter Milan. However, the Bianconeri showed incredible resilience and drew level with two late goals from super-sub Kenan Yildiz, securing a dramatic result that preserved their unbeaten run at the time. It was a testament to the team’s fighting spirit, and they will need to show that same determination again. ............ Inter are fully aware that an away fixture against Juventus is always a challenge, and winning at the Allianz Stadium takes a tremendous effort. Despite the difficulties, they are eager to do so because they cannot allow Napoli to pull too far ahead in the standings. Dropping points in this match could prove costly in the title race. However, Sandro Sabatini believes it is difficult to predict the outcome of this match, given that both clubs are not in the best place right now. He said: “Juve-Inter? We need to be a team throughout the entire match.” “Inzaghi is a great coach and I have a lot of respect for him. I view him as a serious coach who stands by his approach. He’s a human being first and foremost, and then a coach. “I respect him a lot, and tomorrow we have to go about the game with humility, doing things well so that we have a good chance of winning.” ............ “Renato Veiga has the quality to start the play without having to drop a midfielder back. The central defenders have that responsibility. Renato is good at playing short passes, finding free men between the lines, and he also has a great long pass, which Locatelli does too. Federico (Gatti) is improving a lot. Kelly did well in his last game, though he could improve on some decisions.” ............ And, on the current state of refereeing in Serie A, he added: “There are mistakes, they happen and always will. I make mistakes too, so I can’t judge. I respect everyone’s opinions. When controversies arise, we’re all responsible, me included. “There’s too much talk, but it’s part of the game. We just hope that tomorrow there are fewer mistakes. The referees need support: no simulation, no violent fouls. We’ve moved from one extreme to the other. It’s part of the game and needs to be accepted.” . Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato Sabato alle 19:59 Preview: Juventus vs. Inter Milan - prediction, team news, lineups With a lot to live up to after October's eight-goal thriller, Serie A giants Juventus and Inter will clash in Turin on Sunday evening. While Juve come into the latest Derby d'Italia fresh from success in Europe, Inter are aiming to keep pace with Scudetto rivals Napoli. Match preview Since staging a dramatic comeback to avoid defeat when the two Italian heavyweights last met, Juventus have fallen further behind old foes Inter in the Serie A standings, with last week's win over lowly Como still leaving them outside the cherished Champions League places. ............ Serie A's last undefeated home record will go on the line against the reigning champions, as Juventus aim to post three league wins on the spin for the first time since January 2024. Across another sub-par campaign, they have drawn the joint-most home matches throughout Europe's top five leagues, and more wins will be required if they are to overtake Lazio in the race for fourth place. Heading in to Sunday's showdown, perhaps the biggest concern for Motta - a former Inter midfielder - is that the visitors have scored a league-leading 17 goals from set pieces; meanwhile, his side have conceded the highest proportion of goals from such dead-ball situations (43%). At least history will be on the hosts' side, as Juventus lead the overall head-to-head by 39 wins and have lost just one of the teams' last 11 league meetings in Turin. Despite fumbling a two-goal lead in this term's reverse fixture - a frantic 4-4 draw in Milan - Inter are unbeaten in three top-flight games against Juve, dating back to their defeat at the Allianz Stadium in November 2022. ............ Team News Never afraid to tinker - even with a winning team - Juventus boss Thiago Motta may make changes between two legs of a crucial Champions League tie, with Teun Koopmeiners, Khephren Thuram, Francisco Conceicao and midweek hero Samuel Mbangula all vying for promotion to the hosts' starting XI. Top scorer Dusan Vlahovic has been benched in recent weeks, so current first-choice Randal Kolo Muani will hope to extend his superb start to life in Italy. The latter's tally of five goals in three games represents the best record of any new Serie A player this century. Motta is still without his preferred back four, as Bremer, Pierre Kalulu, Juan Cabal and Andrea Cambiaso are all sidelined, while recent arrival Lloyd Kelly missed training due to illness and Douglas Luiz has been ruled out by another muscular problem. Meanwhile, Inter's main concern regards Marcus Thuram, who is the Nerazzurri's leading league scorer - Khephren's older brother faces a late fitness test after sustaining an ankle injury. ............ Juventus possible starting lineup: Di Gregorio; Weah, Gatti, Veiga, Savona; Locatelli; Conceicao, Thuram, McKennie, Mbangula; Kolo Muani Inter possible starting lineup: Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Martinez, Thuram We say: Juventus 1-1 Inter Following a rare flurry of goals in this fixture - eight in less than 70 minutes at San Siro - a more circumspect game should play out this weekend. Draw specialists Juventus would surely settle for a point that will stall Inter's title charge, and their recent run of form suggests they could have turned a corner. . Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato Sabato alle 20:29 Juventus vs Inter: Preview and Prediction Juventus have shown ample signs that they are ready to march forward rather than stutter in some important games. Following a disastrous season dominated by their propensity to draw games, the Bianconeri are currently on the mend and stitching together a good enough winning run. ............ Back on to league matters, Juventus are coming into this big Derby d’Italia at the back of consecutive wins over Empoli and Como, with Randal Kolo Muani the star of the show on both occasions. Now they face Inter Milan at home, as Thiago Motta will want to stake a claim at another chance to push for a higher place in the table. While Juventus’ immediate target would be to get back into Champions League places, Inter Milan have something bigger at stake ahead of this clash. The Nerazzuri are contesting a tightly fought title race, with Napoli sitting only a point above them at the top of the standings. ............ Team News & Tactics Juventus Motta will keep an eye on the second leg with PSV Eindhoven, which could influence his team’s selection for this one. The Bianconeri boss went with a changed lineup in midweek, meaning some of the regulars who sat on the bench for that clash could return to the fold. For instance, Khephren Thuram and Francisco Conceicao are all set for returns. Those changes could see Weston McKennie moving back into the left-back slot to decide his goalscoring display against PSV Eindhoven. Federico Gatti and Renato Veiga are expected to play in central defence, with Nicola Savona set to occupy the right-back slot. Manuel Locatelli and Thuram are expected back in the midfield setting, with Douglas Luiz likely to make way for the latter. On the injury front, there are no fresh problems, with Piere Kalulu, Arkadiusz Milik and Andrea Cambiaso the only ones set to return in the short term, as Juan Cabal and Gleison Bremer are out of the remainder of the campaign. In the attack, Koopmeiners will take up the No.10 role, while Mbangula might keep his place at the expense of Kenan Yildiz. Conceicao is likely to replace Nico Gonzalez, while Kolo Muani will continue to lead the line ahead of Dusan Vlahovic, who will find himself on the bench once again. Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1) – Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Veiga, McKennie; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Mbangula; Kolo Muani Inter ............ Probable Lineup (3-5-2) – Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez Key Stats Juventus are undefeated in 31 of their last 32 matches in Serie A. Juventus are targetting their first 4-game winning streak of the season. Inter are undefeated in 18 of their last 19 matches in Serie A. Inter are two points behind Napoli in the Serie A standings. Player to Watch Randal Kolo Muani After a stellar start to life in Turin, Kolo Muani will be eager to make a statement of sorts with a big performance against one of the top rivals. With Inter coming to Turin, he has a big game awaiting as Juventus look to continue on their good form of late. ............ Prediction Juventus 2-1 Inter Inter are coming into this clash with stuttering form despite winning their most recent league game against Fiorentina. They were also thumped by the same opposition away from home a few days prior, which casts some doubts over their performance on the road, as they could potentially drop points here and give Napoli the advantage. Juventus, on the other hand, are one of the strongest defensive teams in the league despite losing many of their backline personnel during the season. At home, they will look for their first four-game winning streak and make a statement of intent with a win over Inter by the narrowest of margins. . Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato Domenica alle 08:54 Juventus vs. Inter match preview Out of all the Serie A draws that Juventus have been a part of this season — and there’s been a lot so sometimes it’s hard to keep track — there are few that have felt anything other than complete frustration. ............ Since that insane Kenan Yildiz-inspired comeback and 4-4 draw with Inter Milan at the San Siro back in October, Juventus’ season has not gone on the kind of trajectory that we hoped a result and fightback like we saw that night could kick into gear. Instead, the draws only continued to come at a more frequent pace, and certainly not in the same kind of fashion of the one against Inter. So now, with Inter competing for another Scudetto and Juventus very much now in a fight that could end up involving as many as four or five clubs to finish in fourth place and a Champions League position, they meet again as the venue shifts to the Allianz Stadium in Turin. It comes during a stretch in which Juventus have put back-to-back wins together in Serie A for just the third time this season but the overall performance level of Thiago Motta’s squad still leaves plenty to be desired. Sunday night’s matchup at the Allianz is very much one of the biggest remaining fixtures on the schedule and also a chance to show that they can actually claim a big win over a big club in Italy. ............ “The team is doing well, winning always brings extra energy,” Motta said at his pre-match press conference. “I see the lads motivated and I also feel energized.” ............ That means another Thuram derby between Marcus’ Inter and Khephren’s Juve is very much in the cards, but it is not much of the storyline like it was the first time around in October. The main theme going into Sunday night really is if this little winning run Juventus currently find themselves on will prove to be the much-needed confidence this team has been lacking. A big fixture like this, one of the most-heated atmospheres Motta’s squad will face the rest of this season, can either be a huge boost or — like what we saw last season around this time of the year — be a big blow to the confidence level of the entire squad. With Lazio holding Napoli to their third straight draw — hey look, somebody else can do that, too! — there is a chance Juventus can jump into fourth place with a win over the reigning Serie A champions. Whether Juve can do it or not is anybody’s guess. ............ TEAM NEWS The good injury news between the last time Juventus played and this one: Andrea Cambiaso returned to training on Friday. Although he’s not expected to start against Inter, it will be nice to have an actual left back available again. The not-so-good injury news between the last time Juventus played and this one: Douglas Luiz will miss the Derby d’Italia due to muscle fatigue he reported after Thursday’s training session. It’s just another setback for a player who has already had many of them this season. Winter signing Lloyd Kelly was forced to miss training Friday due to illness. It’s still unsure what his status will be for Sunday’s game against Inter. ............ What’s a key to potentially beating Inter on Sunday night in Motta’s mind? This is what he had to say about that: “To win, as I said, we have to work well together and earn it on the pitch. We have to earn victory, we have to always go for it. ............ Socrates 8512 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134514 messaggi Inviato Domenica alle 09:05 Juventus vs Inter probable lineups: Motta revamps his midfield On Sunday night, Juventus and Inter will lock horns for the campaign’s second edition of the Derby d’Italia. While the two sides shared the spoils in a dramatic 4-4 at San Siro, both will be aiming for the bragging rights this time around. But with a decisive Champions League play-off contest to negotiate in just three days, Thiago Motta will be looking to add some fresh legs to his lineup. The Juventus boss will be making a few tactical tweaks on the wings and in the middle of the park. Khephren Thuram will play as a defensive midfielder in a 4-1-4-1 formation, while Teun Koopmeinrs returns to the starting lineup to play in a more advanced role in midfield alongside Weston McKennie who preserves his spot following his heroics on Tuesday against PSV Eindhoven. Douglas Luiz picked up an injury while Manuel Locatelli could be rested. On the wings, Francisco Conceicao is expected to start for the first time in weeks following an impressive cameo in the Champions League. Nicolas Gonzalez should take the left wing, thus dropping Kenan Yildiz to the bench alongside Samuel Mbangula. Randal Kolo Muani will start in attack as usual, while Nicolo Savona is the only expected change at the back. The Italian should replace Lloyd Kelly on the left flank, while Timothy Weah, Federico Gatti and Renato Veiga keep their spots ahead of Michele Di Gregorio. ............ Juventus Probable XI (4-1-4-1): Di Gregorio; Weah, Gatti, Veiga, Savona; Thuram; Conceicao, McKennie, Koopmeiners, Gonzalez; Kolo Muani. Inter Probable XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi (De Vrij), Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Lautaro, Taremi (Thuram). .
