I say that because that’s exactly how I felt when the final whistle sounded Friday night. It had all of the makings of a 14th draw in Serie A on the 2024-25 season for Juventus. It had the blown lead after going up a goal. It had a second-half performance that left so much to be desired and was a far cry of what we saw from Thiago Motta’s squad after the break against Empoli last weekend. But unlike so many instances in which Juventus have blown a lead this season and gone on to draw — something that has resulted in 17 points being dropped from a leading position — they were actually able to find an answer to get things back in their favor during the closing minutes. It just so happened that the two goals came through the same source in which so much of Juve’s goal scoring has been courtesy of the last two league fixtures. That’s right, my friends, everybody’s newest favorite striker Randal Kolo Muani continued his red-hot start to life at Juventus, scoring both goals — including an 89th-minute penalty kick after Federico Gatti got whacked right upside the head — in the Bianconeri’s 2-1 win over Como that had all the makings of another draw against a relegation battler. Kolo Muani’s fourth and fifth goal with Juve helped his new club win back-to-back games for just the third time this season and for the first time since November. ............ This was a grind and involved a whole lot of trying to survive during long stretches of play when Como were clearly the better side. There were plenty of times in the second half in which the sight of Juventus and Como basically being even on possession didn’t even feel close to what my eyes were seeing because the home side had so many chances to score. Somehow, Juventus survived it. I honestly don’t know how they did, but they did. So much of this game didn’t make sense — from the fact that Como had twice as many shots as Juventus to the simple fact that Motta’s squad scored two of the three shots they had on goal. It was the ultimate walking of a fine line from staying in a position to actually go back ahead or letting Como take their first lead of the night. ............ This was far from a good Juventus performance. But it’s a night in which they got three points. In a season that has plenty of confusing moments that have lead to equally confusing results, it’s nice to see Juventus actually get a win even though we’re left to kinda wonder how the heck they actually did it. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS The same starting lineup? In back-to-back games? That’s crazy talk! (It’s just the second time in Serie A that it’s happened this season — which, considering it’s early February, isn’t exactly the best thing.) ............ To make matters worse, Michele Di Gregorio has almost twice as many saves (5) as Juve have shots (3) as this game headed toward the final 25 minutes. That’s not great. Di Gregorio’s first save of the night sure was a good one. He needed every bit of his wingspan to get that deflected shot as it headed toward his back post. ............ Teun Koopmeiners ... buddy, you’re not doing a lot to help yourself and turn things in your favor with mistakes like you made on the Como goal right before the half. That was rough on multiple fronts, and I’m guessing the slip was just the cherry on top. ............ I know Motta’s substitutions are far from perfect and it’s definitely an aspect in which he needs to work on as a manager no mater how long he will be at Juventus, but it was good to see him realize that the midfield of Koopmeiners and Manuel Locatelli just wasn’t working. There definitely was a change for the better once Khephren Thuram and Douglas Luiz came on even if the nonchalant nature of Luiz’s game still is totally hard to get. ............ We’re 1,100 words in and this is the first reference of Dusan Vlahovic, the highest-paid player in Serie A. Against Como, he was a DNP-CD. And with how Kolo Muani is playing right now, I think it’s pretty easy to figure out who will start up front against PSV Eindhoven next week. Renato Veiga ... pretty solid once again. Because of where Juventus finished during the new-look league phase, they are not in that group. Instead, Juve have to play the next 180 minutes to keep their European campaign alive beyond February. And, in a funny little twist, it comes against a team they’ve already played when one of the main objectives of the UCL league phase was to not have opponents repeat during the eight-game schedule. Doesn’t matter if it’s been fullback, midfielder in the pivot and No. behind the striker, McKennie has done it. ............ But with Koopmeiners still very much struggling and most likely coming off the bench Tuesday night, McKennie is likely to retain his spot behind the striker just as he played last week against Como. Has he been great in that position the last few times he’s played there? No, not really. But his defensive work rate is likely going to be a big thing in trying to handle a PSV side that will certainly be pressing and see a good amount of the ball Tuesday night. ............ We have an idea where McKennie will start against PSV. Who knows if that’s where he ends up knowing he’s been asked to play two or sometimes even three different positions through his 80 or 90 minutes on the field.
