Late Ante Rebic goal steals a point for Lecce against Juventus

Serie A | Lecce 1-1 Juventus: Last gasp Rebic denies Old Lady

Juventus played out a draw against Lecce tonight, despite appearing to be on the verge of victory.

The Bianconeri knew they needed to win this game, as consecutive goalless draws had begun to raise questions among fans about their ability to score goals. The men in black and white started strongly, with Khephren Thuram coming close to opening the scoring almost immediately after kickoff. Francisco Conceição also hit the post within the first 16 minutes, as Juventus piled on the pressure in search of a breakthrough.

Despite relentless pressure, including a disallowed goal from Timothy Weah for offside, Juventus couldn’t find the back of the net. ............

Thiago Motta’s team had gone over 230 minutes without scoring and entered the second half with renewed intensity. ............

Federico Gatti nearly took matters into his own hands, coming close to scoring for Juventus. ............

Juventus finally broke the deadlock with a deflected shot from Andrea Cambiaso, a deserved goal given their dominance. ............

The hosts’ persistence paid off in heartbreaking fashion for Juventus when Ante Rebić scored a dramatic late equaliser, denying the Bianconeri a hard-fought victory.

Juventus 1 - Lecce 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Lecce v Juventus - Serie A

One would think that the best defense in Serie A would be able to close out a game in which they are facing what has easily been the league’s worst attacking side. That’s what logic tells you. But, as we saw Sunday night, Juventus defense had been teetering for much of the second half, with Lecce very much giving Mattia Perin plenty to do after barely having to handle the ball in the opening 45 minutes.

After all that teetering, the dam finally broke. ............

From Andrea Cambiaso — the man who gave Juve a 1-0 lead with his long-range shot in the 68th minute — turning the ball over as he looked to counter one last time and call more clock to Jonas Rouhi absolutely losing track of Ante Rebic on the subsequent counter as he steamed into the box, it was just all bad. With Rebic very much open at the back post, it felt like a fitting end for a second-half performance in which the worst attack in Serie A this season actually showed signs of life rather than producing next to nothing.

Just like in the last-minute loss to Stuttgart, I can’t help but think the same thing: Perin didn’t deserve any of this. Yet Juventus’ defense, at the worst possible time, reverted back to its worst self rather than how it has played for much of the 2024-25 season. ............

It’s resulted in a team that is still unbeaten in Serie A, sure, but has two more draws (8) than wins (6) so far this season.

And it’s especially those draws against teams in the bottom half of the table — let alone in or around the relegation zone — that truly add plenty of salt in the wound no matter what point of the season it may be.

That’s eight points dropped against Empoli, Cagliari, Parma and now Lecce rather than 12 points earned. It doesn’t matter who is available or try to put a positive spin on it, Juventus simply can’t afford to see those results against provincial sides continue to happen. Yet they are.

That’s why as much as you can say “Hey! Juventus are still unbeaten in the league!” it’s a little bit of a false flag. Yes, it’s not a loss, but boy dropping points in that kind of fashion against a club that has barely scored all season certainly feels like one. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Thinking you today, Edoardo Bove. That’s just so scary. ............
  • I just don’t know why Cambiaso felt the need to go all YOLO and have such a bad turnover at that moment in time. You just can’t do that. ............
  • Of course, the first thought I had go through my head other than “How did Khephren miss that one?” was the simple notion of “I hope this isn’t one of those days.” I’m guessing I wasn’t the only person thinking that despite it being so early on in the proceedings.
  • And right after I got done typing out those previous thoughts about Thuram’s chance, there goes Francisco Conceição curling one towards the far post and hitting the woodwork. Sheesh.
  • It’s the 20th minute and Cambiaso was already closing in on 40 touchs. Sheesh.
  • Timothy Weah touches in the first half: 8.
  • Teun Koopmeiners touches in the first half: 21.
  • Mattia Perin touches in the first half: 21. ............
  • Perin had virtually nothing to do in the first half. The first 12 minutes of the second half, though? He was forced into five saves — which, no matter the difficulty of them, didn’t feel like all that great of a development against a side that has scored all of six times all season. ............
  • For as good as Nicolo Savona has been to start his career with Juventus’ senior team, the same can’t be said about Rouhi at the other fullback spot. Now we know why he hasn’t played as much as Savona, and it’s not like what he let happen in stoppage time is going to help his case for more playing time. That’s not how you earn a manager’s trust.
  • I’m still trying to figure out why Motta took Gatti out. Unless there’s something physically wrong with him, it’s not like Juventus have a midweek game coming up so managing minutes might not have been as much of a pressing matter as it could have been. ............
  • Lecce had as many shots as Juventus in the second half. Unacceptable.
  • If Napoli beat Roma on Monday night, they’re going to be nine points clear of Juventus. Remember when Juve were in sixth but two points behind Napoli just a few weeks ago? Ah, those were the days, my friends.
  • In conclusion, Lecce — the worst attacking team in the league — finished with a higher xG than Juventus on Sunday night. This is just frustrating as all hell, man.

Juventus player ratings v Lecce – Average scores across the team

Juventus team v Lecce

 ............

Player Ratings

Mattia Perin – 7.5
Perin was as reliable as ever between the posts, making crucial saves to keep Juventus in the game. His consistency continues to make life difficult for Michele Di Gregorio, who arrived in Turin aiming to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Danilo – 6.0
 ............

Federico Gatti – 6.5
Solid defensively, Gatti contributed to keeping Lecce at bay for much of the match. However, his adventurous forward runs began to leave gaps at the back, and he was eventually substituted.

Pierre Kalulu – 7.0
Kalulu was once again Juventus’ standout defender. His positional awareness and composure were vital in neutralizing Lecce’s attacking threats.

Andrea Cambiaso – 8.0
A Man of the Match display from the versatile full-back. Cambiaso excelled in multiple roles, capped by scoring Juventus’ only goal with a well-taken deflected shot. His adaptability and work rate were commendable.

Manuel Locatelli – 6.5
 ............

Khephren Thuram – 6.5
 ............

Kenan Yildiz – 7.0
For much of his time on the pitch, Yildiz was Juventus’ most dynamic attacker, constantly probing Lecce’s defence. Unfortunately, he couldn’t deliver the decisive touch when it mattered most.

Teun Koopmeiners – 7.5
Koopmeiners delivered one of his best performances in a Juventus shirt. He provided the assist for Cambiaso’s goal and was a steady presence in midfield throughout the game.

Francisco Conceição – 7.5
Conceição was a live wire on the flank, with his pace and directness causing Lecce significant problems. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t find the breakthrough he deserved.

Timothy Weah – 6.5
 ............

Substitutes

Jonas Rouhi – 6.0
 ............

Nicolò Fagioli – 6.0
Replacing Thuram in midfield, Fagioli failed to offer the dynamism needed to control the game. His impact was minimal.

Samuel Mbangula – 6.0
 ............

Diego Pugno – N/A
Pugno came on too late to have a meaningful influence on the game and did not play enough to earn a rating.

Motta displeased with Juventus attitude on late equalizer, suggests new role for Yildiz

Thiago Motta: 'Juventus running out of steam, Yildiz can play central' after poor 1-1 draw

Juventus coach Thiago Motta was in an unpleasant mood after watching his men concede a late equalizer at the Via del Mare.

The Bianconeri were the better side in the first half and were incredibly close to breaking the deadlock through Khephren Thuram who missed a sitter and Francisco Conceicao who hit the post.

In the end, the Old Lady found the breakthrough through a deflected shot from Andrea Cambiaso, but the latter’s ill-advising late venture saw him lose possession in the dying ambers of the match, which culminated in Ante Rebic’s equalizer. ............

“I am so sad about what happened to Bove, and my thoughts go especially to his family. It is terrible for a parent to see their child go through such a difficult time. I hope he can make a swift recovery so that his family may relax,” said the Juventus manager in his post-match press conference as published by the club’s official website. ............

“Regarding the match, we played well in the first half, but in the second half, we dropped off in intensity. Lecce started to take control and, although we defended well, we made avoidable mistakes that led to the equaliser.

“Cambiaso made the decision to try that move at that moment, but in games like these, we have to learn to manage certain situations better.” ............

“Kenan can play either out wide or as a central striker. He is a versatile player, but today I preferred Timo [Weah] up front to stretch the game. ............

Juventus midfielder on Lecce draw: “Zero alibis, zero excuses”

e9cbnab3o7py3fq9vpac.jpg

Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli insists Juventus cannot hide behind any excuses following their disappointing draw in Lecce.

With nine first-team players ruled out with various injuries, the Bianconeri traveled south with a depleted squad. Hence, Thiago Motta gave call-ups for five youngsters from the club’s Next Gen and Primavera squads their maiden senior call-ups, and one of them, Diego Pugno, earned his debut, coming on late in the match for Francisco Conceicao.

Juventus were the better side in the first half, but the hosts held firm until the second period, when Andrea Cambiaso’s shot was deflected by Kialonda Gaspar who wrongfooted Wladimiro Falcone.

However, the Juventus fullback turned from hero to villain, as he ill-advisedly tried to dribble past several opponents in the middle of the park with just one minute on the clock. The Italy international was dispossessed and the play culminated with Ante Rebic scoring an equalizer to earn the Giallorossi a precious point. ............

But while many would point towards the injury crisis and the packed schedule to justify the current skid, Locatelli refuses to offer any alibi. The Juventus stalwart simply believes that the team must do better.

” Zero alibis and zero excuses, we need to do more. We remain united and convinced of the work we do! Until the end,” this was the message that the former Sassuolo man tried to convey to his teammates on his Instagram account. ............

The standout stats from Lecce draw: Juventus break record 68-year-old record

qy1su7ealjrkzcd14dkj.jpg

At the Via del Mare, Juventus failed to return to winning ways, settling for a 1-1 draw against their hosts Lecce. ............

The official Juventus website provided us with the most interesting stats and facts recorded in the aftermath of the contest.

We begin with the most significant one, as the Bianconeri ended up breaking a club record that stood since 1956 when the club registered 17 draws in Serie A. While 2024 has yet to draw to a close, Juve have already shared the spoils on 18 occasions this year, setting up a new undesired club record shared by Max Allegri, Paolo Montero and Thiago Motta.

On another note, Cambiaso scored his first away goal in the top flight. ............

Juventus are sixth in the Serie A standings with six wins and eight draws. Nevertheless, they remain among three clubs in Europe’s Top Five Leagues who have yet to suffer defeat on the domestic stage. The other two are Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain who sit on top of the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 table respectively.

This season, only Cagliari have hit the woodwork more than Juventus. The Sardinians were denied by the post on 10 occasions, one more than the Bianconeri and Roma.

Pavan says Juventus had no one to turn to on the bench against Lecce

Motta calls for improvement after Juventus held again in Serie A at Lecce

Juventus came agonisingly close to returning to winning ways in their match against Lecce, only for their opponents to score a late equaliser. This left the Old Lady with yet another frustrating draw. The Bianconeri, still grappling with injuries, played the match without a recognised striker, making it even more challenging to secure a decisive victory. Despite their limitations, Juventus worked hard and managed to take the lead, a testament to their resilience and determination.

As the match progressed, it seemed likely that Juventus would walk away with all three points. However, the lack of depth on their bench became glaringly obvious. The substitutes who entered the game were unable to make a meaningful impact, and Lecce exploited this vulnerability to score late in the match. ............

To regain their dominance, it is crucial that their injured players return to action, providing stronger options for rotation and tactical changes. Without sufficient quality in the squad, matches like these—where tactical adjustments and fresh legs can make the difference—will continue to slip away.

Massimo Pavan, an Italian journalist, reflected on the match and criticised the lack of quality options on the Juventus bench. He said: “On Sunday, I saw a team that needed changes in the second half but didn’t have any. The real points lost through fault were with Parma; in Lecce, there was fault but mitigated by the circumstances. With Cagliari instead, there were episodes and an inadequate referee.” ............

Stronger reinforcements might have turned matches like these into victories, but until such issues are resolved, the Bianconeri risk continued disappointment.

Journalist insists Juventus is not yet at the level of the other top clubs in Serie A

Serie A 2024-25: Motta, Conte weigh in after Juventus draws with Napoli - Sportstar

Although Juventus made managerial changes and secured new signings during the summer, expectations remain high for the Bianconeri to contend for the Serie A title. As the most decorated club in Italian football, Juve is accustomed to competing for honours every season, regardless of the challenges they face. Despite the team’s efforts and an unbeaten record in Serie A so far, their campaign has been far from dominant, with many matches ending in draws rather than victories. ............

Journalist Carlo Tarallo has been closely observing the Serie A title race and believes Juventus lacks the quality of their main rivals. Tarallo remarked: “Yes, Juve is not at the level of the other big teams. Motta is trying to compensate for the difficulties with tactical experiments, but the absence of a real striker is felt. Vlahović, for example, is disappointing expectations, and we could say the same about Lukaku, at least until recently. But now Lukaku is changing pace, and this gives us hope for the future. Then the Belgian takes part in the manoeuvre, so he is much more incisive than his Juventus colleague.” ............

Thiago Motta could recover two players before the Bologna game

Dušan Vlahović i Vasilije Adžić

Juventus prepares to face Bologna this weekend as they push to recover momentum in what has been a challenging season so far. The Bianconeri have grappled with an unusually high number of injuries, leaving the team significantly weakened at key moments. Missing as many as nine critical players during their last outing against Lecce, Juventus struggled to secure a win, but there is optimism heading into their next fixture.

Juventus may receive a significant boost with the potential return of Dusan Vlahovic and Vasilije Adžić for the Bologna clash. The return of these players could offer much-needed reinforcement for a squad that has been stretched thin. Vlahovic’s presence in particular would bolster Juve’s attacking options, addressing a critical need for more firepower as they aim to secure three crucial points. ............

The stakes are high for Juventus, which cannot afford to drop more points if it hopes to remain in contention near the top of the Serie A standings. ............

Club World Cup 2025 Draw: Juventus get Manchester City, Wydad AC and Al Ain

procedures-confirmed-ahead-of-fifa-club-world-cup-2025-draw.jpg

The 2025 edition of the Club World Cup is very much a trip into the unknown. That’s not only because this is the first edition of this new-look summer tournament as compared to the very small winter one, but there’s also been a whole lot of uncertainty about just how all of it is going to go down. ............

We’ve slowly heard about venues in the United States. And, just a couple of days after the pots for the draw were released, we heard who Juventus will play in the Club World Cup group stage.

During Thursday’s draw hosted by a certain well-dressed Italian man named Alessandro Del Piero in Miami — where Leo Messi and Inter Miami will host the tournament’s opening game come June 15 — Juve’s group stage opponents were revealed. Sitting in Pot 2 and subsequently drawn into Group G, Juventus were drawn against English champions Manchester City, CAF Champions League winners from 2021-22 Wydad AC out of Morocco and Dubai side Al Ain FC, providing the first major talking point for what this summer tournament will actually look like other than where games are being played.

Juventus’ opening Club World Cup fixture will be against Al Ain, with the final group stage matchup coming against Pep Guardiola’s Man City.

(Yes, the same Manchester City that Juve will face in the Champions League next week. You can be the judge as to which one will have bigger importance to Thiago Motta and Co.) ............

Juventus could set new defensive record in Saturday’s match against Bologna

Thiago Motta

Juventus will have the opportunity to register a new club record by earning another clean sheet against Bologna, even if it would come with a bittersweet taste. ............

Juventus have at least been solid at the back, already registering 10 clean sheets from their 14 Serie A outings.

The Turin-based giants will have the opportunity to set a new club record if they manage to prevent Bologna from scoring in Saturday’s encounter at the Allianz Stadium.

This would be the first time in their history that Juventus collect 11 clean sheets in their first 15 Serie A contests. Overall, only Milan were able to record 12 shutouts from 15 matches, setting a long-standing league record since 1971/72.

Moreover, Juventus could be on the right path to set a new season record for clean sheets. The number to beat currently stands at 22. ............

Probable Juventus lineup vs Bologna: Vlahovic set for immediate start

Vlahovic celebrating Lazio's own-goal

Juventus bomber Dusan Vlahovic is reportedly warming up his engines, as he could be selected in the starting lineup against Bologna.

The 24-year-old was chastised by a section of the supporters and the media for some lackluster displays, and he even made things worse with some curious statements while on international duty. And yet, the Bianconeri’s frontline has been a shamble in his absence, especially with Arek Milik still nursing a knee injury. ............

Nevertheless, the Serbia international has now recovered and has already rejoined his teammates in training. He, alongside Vaslilije Adzic should receive a call-up for Saturday’s Serie A clash against Bologna.

It's expected the former Fiorentina star to be included in the starting formation. ............

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Perin, Danilo, Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso, Locatelli, Thuram, Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz, Vlahovic. Coach: Thiago Motta.

Preview: Juventus vs. Bologna - prediction, team news, lineups

Voorspelling Juventus Bologna FC - Prediction - Serie A - 07-12-2024

After yet another draw last weekend, Juventus fell further off the pace in Serie A's title race, so they will seek maximum points from Saturday's clash with Bologna.

While Juve were denied victory in stoppage time by lowly Lecce, their revived visitors have won in both league and cup over the past week, scoring seven goals without reply.

Match preview

 ............

Unbeaten in 24 league meetings with Bologna - winning 17 times in the process - Juventus will hope to continue in that vein on Saturday evening, before facing Premier League champions Manchester City next week.

Given Juve's recent propensity for stalemates, the sides have fittingly drawn all three of their most recent encounters, including a six-goal thriller in Bologna last season, when the away side fought back from three goals behind. ............

Team News

Amid a long series of injuries, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for Juventus this weekend, as young full-back Nicolo Savona and top scorer Dusan Vlahovic should be back in the squad following layoffs.

The latter has scored six league goals against Bologna to date, though his last Serie A strike from open play at the Allianz Stadium came back in February - 12 games ago.

Back-up striker Arkadiusz Milik (knee) and the South American quartet of Juan CabalBremer (both ACL), Nico Gonzalez (thigh) and Douglas Luiz (muscular) are all unavailable, but Weston McKennie may be back in action after missing the trip down to Lecce with a muscular problem. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Danilo, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Bologna possible starting lineup:
Skorupski; Posch, Beukema, Lucumi, Miranda; Freuler, Moro; Ndoye, Odgaard, Dominguez; Castro

We say: Juventus 1-0 Bologna

Bologna have won three of their first seven away games this season, but stubborn Juventus are one of a trio of teams still unbeaten across Europe's top five leagues.

It should be a close-fought contest in Turin, with Thiago Motta just finding a way to defeat his old club and end Juve's wait for a win.

Motta confirms Vlahovic will make his return to action against Bologna

FC Internazionale v Juventus - Serie A

For the majority of the 2024-25 season, Juventus coach Thiago Motta has been leaning on Dusan Vlahovic to shoulder the load of playing time up front. Juve’s only other option in the No. 9 position, Arek Milik, has been injured ever since June, meaning the big Serbian had started every game up until last month when he suffered a muscle injury during the November international break.

After missing three games due to said injury, word came out earlier this week that Vlahovic had returned to training — a welcome sight for a Juve attack that struggled mightily to score goals in his absence.

On Friday, Motta confirmed that the 24-year-old striker would return to the squad that will face Bologna at the Allianz Stadium. ............

“Dusan will be in the group tomorrow. He’s trained with the team this week,” Motta said at his pre-match press conference. “We are happy Vlahovic is back to do what he loves and his work, which is to enter the pitch and play football.” ............

“Adzic and Savona will also be back,” Motta said. “We are happy that there is more depth in the squad again, but also personally for those returning to be able to do their job on the pitch. We will also have youngsters Diego Pugno, Augusto Owusu, Filippo Pagnucco and Niccolò Rizzo in the squad with us tomorrow.” ............

“I spent two fantastic years in Bologna at a human and sporting level. I have nothing to add about the rest,” the 42-year-old Motta said. ............

Besides the big injury boosts with Vlahovic and Savona returning this weekend, Juventus also have the good fortune of being able to play their next four games in front of their fans at the Allianz Stadium. After three straight games away from home coming out of the international break, Motta’s squad won’t head back out on the road until they play against Monza a couple of days before Christmas.

“We would like to thank the fans again who will come to support us in large numbers at the stadium tomorrow: the important thing is what we do on the pitch and the quality of our play”. ............

Serie A Preview: Juventus vs Bologna – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

Juventus_Bologna_Preview.jpg

New Juventus manager Thiago Motta faces former employers Bologna in one of the standout fixtures of Serie A Matchday 15. Saturday’s encounter at the Allianz Stadium has all the makings of a must-win clash for the home side amid their faltering Scudetto pursuit.

Conceding a heartbreaking stoppage-time equalizer condemned Juventus to a 1-1 away draw against Lecce, marking their sixth stalemate across their last eight outings in all competitions (W2). That inability to turn single-point affairs into victories has significantly derailed Bianconeri’s hopes of halting a four-year title duck in Serie A. ............

Match Preview

Juventus

In dire need of three points, Juventus come into this fixture looking to put a decisive halt to a three-game winless run against Bologna. All three showdowns have ended all square, with the Bianconeri conceding the opening goal on each occasion, underscoring the magnitude of the task awaiting them this weekend.

Therefore, another stalemate is well on the cards. As aforementioned, sharing the spoils has been a running theme for Juventus this season, especially in Turin. Motta’s men have drawn half of their home games in all competitions (W2, D3, L1) but remain undefeated in their last 14 Serie A outings at the Allianz Stadium (W6, D8).

Remarkably, those results form part of Juve’s formidable 22-match unbeaten streak in league action, accounting for the longest current run without losing in Italy’s top flight. Extending that purple patch may also witness a quick-fire start. Indeed, three of Juventus’ last four home league matches have produced an opener inside the first 20 minutes.

Bologna

Italiano has recovered from a miserable start, re-establishing Bologna as one of the most resilient and tactically disciplined sides in Serie A this season. In addition to winning four of their last five league contests (L1), the Rossoblu humbled Monza 4-0 in midweek Coppa Italia action, consolidating their spirits ahead of this road trip. ............

Team News

Long-term absentees Arkadiusz Millik, Douglas Luiz, Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, and Nicolas Gonzalez have got company in the treatment room amid a full-blown injury crisis in Turin. Weston McKeenie is the latest Juventus ace to be sidelined by an injury. However, Dusan Vlahovic is back to full fitness and should spearhead the attack. ............

Juventus vs Bologna Potential Starting Line-up

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Danilo, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic.

Bologna (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; Posch, Beukema, Lucumi, Miranda; Freuler, Moro; Ndoye, Odgaard, Dominguez; Castro.

Juventus vs Bologna Prediction

This meeting has a low-scoring theme written all over it. Though both teams have thrived in such circumstances, the home comforts of the Allianz Stadium favor Juventus for the win. We back the hosts to live up to the billing.

Prediction: Juventus to Win

Juventus vs Bologna: Preview and Prediction

Juventus vs Bologna: Voorbeschouwing en Voorspelling - azscore.com

Thiago Motta prepares for a reunion with his former side as Juventus prepare to take on Bologna, with the pressure to keep up with the top five.

Juventus are at risk of falling behind in the title race as the five teams above them in the standings are clearing room as they get set to host Bologna at the Allianz Stadium. The Bianconeri suffered another setback with yet another draw that saw them drop more points in the title race.

Their 1-1 draw away to US Lecce was their third in a row in all competitions and fourth in five games, which could come to bite back later in the season. It’s a similar pattern that ensued earlier in the season, although Juventus have the firepower to bounce back and make their presence felt in the race.

Meanwhile, Motta will have to prove a point against former side Bologna, as they visit Turin ahead of Saturday. Bologna have performed in a different way than many had expected, but they are not too much off the pace, as their current position in the 8th spot suggests. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Thiago Motta still has a long injury list to contend with, Gleison Bremer and Arkadiusz Milik aside; they have winger Nico Gonzalez missing, while full-back pair Juan Cabal and Nicolo Savona are also absent with injury issues.

Midfield pair Weston McKennie and Douglas Luiz are also out of the contest, meaning Motta’s options in many kep positions are thin heading into this weekend’s game. In those full-back positions, Danilo and Andrea Cambiaso are expected to start.

Motta will continue to pick Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli in his midfield. Francisco Conceicao is in line to start on the right wing, with Kenan Yildiz on the other flank. Teun Koopmeiners will complete the attacking setup behind striker Dusan Vlahovic, who will lead the line for Juventus.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Danilo, Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso; Thuram, Locatell; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Key Stats

  • Juventus are undefeated in their last 26 matches against Bologna in all competitions.
  • Juventus are undefeated in their last 22 matches in Serie A.
  • Juventus have drawn their last three games in all competitions.
  • Bologna have won three of their last four matches in Serie A.
  • Bologna are 5 points behind Juventus in the current Serie A standings.

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

Juventus are dealing with another injury crisis, as the list has grown long, and Thiago Motta has yet to find a solution to creating enough chances in games. Some of their recent draws are proof of their inefficiency in the final third, as Vlahovic’s return will be a welcome boost for the Bianconeri. ............

Prediction

Juventus 1-0 Bologna

Bologna are in a good run of form and could take on Juventus in a challenging way on Saturday. Vincenzo Italiano will want a big fight in Turin from his players, as this is a chance to close the gap on the Bianconeri and return to their objective of finishing in a big European place.

Juventus, on the other hand, may not have had results go their way recently, but they are still a strong side to deal with. The return of Dusan Vlahovic could be key to determining which way this result swings, as the Bianconeri are tipped to take three points with a slender scoreline.

Juventus vs. Bologna match preview

Serie A | Juventus v Bologna: Match Prediction, Preview, Team News and Lineups - FootItalia.com

It’s May 20, 2024. It’s a rainy night in Bologna, and Juventus are rolling into town fresh off a Coppa Italia win but also without the manager who helped them win it. Instead, there’s a caretaker manager for the first time in a long time on the Juventus sideline, with the man who everybody expects to become the next full-time boss just a short distance away on the Bologna bench.

It proved to be a wild night in the rain, with Juve going down 3-0 only to score three goals within 14 minutes to pull even and provide one last bit of last-season fireworks during a five-month run that was very much ... not that.

Fast forward to this weekend and many of the major players in that late-May matchup in Bologna are now somewhere else. But one of the main protagonists will be on the sidelines once again — albeit on the one who calls Allianz Stadium home rather than when he was at the Dall’Ara. Saturday night in Turin will be the first time Thiago Motta faces Bologna since his summer move to Juventus, with both teams looking very, very different compared to when they took part in the six-goal thriller that had Paolo Montero sprinting down the sideline as he celebrated the final two goals of the night. ............

The good news is that the injury crisis has met a bit of a reprieve, with three players who missed the draw with Lecce — most notably Dusan Vlahovic — back in the fold to face Bologna, Motta said at his pre-match press conference. That does, on paper, make you believe that Juve’s attack will be more dangerous than it has been over the last few weeks as Vlahovic dealt with the muscle injury he picked up on international duty.

But just because Vlahovic is back doesn’t necessarily mean everything is fixed.

Juventus are a team that still very much is a work in progress, and with Motta being forced to work with limited options over the last few weeks, the injury situation has not eased the frustrations of a team that enters Saturday night with more draws (8) than wins (6) in Serie A so far this season. Four of Juventus’ last six Serie A fixtures have ended in draws. ............

Bologna entered Matchday 15 sitting in eighth place, five points behind Juventus.

Just like when Juventus took on Lecce six days earlier, Saturday night’s matchup against Bologna has us asking the question of “Is this the day when Juve’s streak of draws comes to an end?” While we don’t know the question to that just yet, there’s one thing that’s for certain: if they continue to stack up draws one after another, it’s going to continue to put stress on the situation no matter the current status of those who are injured.

Juventus need a win over Bologna for a variety of reasons, but the biggest might be just to feel that winning happiness once again. ............

TEAM NEWS

  • I know it’s hard to believe considering what the last couple of weeks have been like, but Juventus actually received some good injury news this week. That included Dusan Vlahovic returning to full training with the squad on Wednesday and is going to be back in the matchday squad, according to Motta at his pre-match press conference.
  • Another Juve attacker, teenager Vasilije Adžić, also returned to training this week.
  • The final player back from injury and available to face Bologna is fullback Nicolo Savona, who was forced to come off injured in Juve’s Champions League draw against Aston Villa.
  • That means Juventus’ injury list has gone down from nine to six players. They are: Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Nico Gonzalez, Arek Milik, Douglas Luiz and Weston McKennie.
  • Motta said that Juve youth sector players Diego Pugno, Augusto Owusu, Filippo Pagnucco and Niccolo Rizzo will also be called up to face Bologna on Saturday. ............

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

Well, Juventus actually has a No. 9 to play up front again. And, wouldn’t you know, it’s the guy who actually wears No. 9 on the back of his jersey. So, while so much of the conversation the last three games has been about what Juventus hasn’t been able to do without somebody like him out there, let’s talk about him coming back.

Yep, it’s time to talk Dusan again. Obviously. ............

So now, as Juve look to actually get three points.

If anything, simply having somebody like Vlahovic and his big frame up front rather than somebody shoehorned in there like Koopmeiners or Weah should help Juventus’ attack. That’s just the line of thinking, though. We know from this season and years past, just because Vlahovic is there it doesn’t always equate to goals being scored. If he isn’t seeing much of the ball or very much isolated for a variety of reasons.

Even though we haven’t reached the midway point of the 2024-25 season, Bologna’s defense has already hit half the number of goals allowed (16) as they did a year ago under Motta (32). So, even though he is not facing a very vulnerable defense like Juve matched up against last weekend in Lecce, Bologna have proven to be susceptible to goals being scored against them. ............

Mbangula saves Juventus unbeaten record with late stunner against Bologna.

Serie A: Juventus-Bologna 2-2, Mbangula salva i bianconeri al 92'

Juventus played out a 2-2 draw against Bologna this evening, salvaging a point with a late equaliser.

Thiago Motta faced his former club for the first time since leaving them in the summer, and Juventus knew this encounter could be one of their toughest tests yet. ............

The men in black and white found themselves in trouble almost immediately after the game began, as Dan Ndoye rattled the crossbar with an early effort.

Juve also suffered an early blow when Andrea Cambiaso was forced off due to injury. Shortly afterwards, Ndoye silenced the Juve fans with a superb opening goal. ............

Bologna started the second half on the front foot, and just six minutes in, Thiago Motta was sent off. This incident seemed to energise Bologna, who soon doubled their lead.

Despite trailing, Juventus pressed forward relentlessly. Their efforts were eventually rewarded when Teun Koopmeiners pulled one back for the Bianconeri. ............

Bologna’s defence held firm as Samuel Mbangula and Nicolo Savona also joined the fray for Juventus in the closing stages.

The substitutions paid off in dramatic fashion. Mbangula struck a stunning equalizer in the first minute of added time, embodying the club’s motto “fino alla fine”—until the end.

Juventus left it late to rescue a point at home against Bologna in an eventual 2-2 draw in Serie A on Saturday evening. Teun Koopmeiners got his first goal ini Juventus colours, despite coach Thiago Motta being sent to the stands a quarter of an hour earlier. ............

Juventus player ratings

Perin 6; Danilo 6.5, Gatti 5 (Savona 6), Kalulu 5, Cambiaso n/a (Rouhi 5); Locatelli 6 (Thuram 6), Fagioli 6 (Yildiz 6); Conceicao 6.5, Koopmeiners 7, Weah 6 (Mbangula 7); Vlahovic 6.

Best Juventus player: Koopmeiners 7 – It’s taken 15 appearances, but the €50m summer signing finally has his first goal in Bianconeri colours. He held up his run well and was open in acres of space when he latched onto Danilo’s low cross in the area. The Dutchman tried his best to get the stadium going after halving his side’s deficit, and Juventus did look an improved side in the final 30 minutes of proceedings. That improvement was confirmed with Mbangula’s fine equaliser in injury time.

Coach: Thiago Motta 4.5 – Headloss. The Juventus coach had been warned in the first half, but couldn’t keep himself in check before being sent off six minutes into the second period. A temporarily disorganised Juventus then fell two goals behind shortly after the coach’s dismissal. That said, Juventus looked vastly improved after going two goals behind, and were threatening with their attacking play in the second portion of the second half. ............

Bologna player ratings

Skorupski 6; Holm 7 (Posch n/a), Beukema 6, Lucumi 6, Miranda 6; Freuler 6.5, Pobega 7 (Moro 5.5); Ndoye 8, Odgaard 6.5 (Fabbian 6), Dominguez 6.5 (Iling-Jr n/a); Castro 7 (Dallinga 5).

Best Bologna player: Ndoye 8 ............

Thiago Motta: ‘The red card? I went too far with my complaints’

Motta espulso: Juve, non ne va bene una. La ricostruzione dell'episodio

Juventus head coach Thiago Motta addressed the media following his team’s match against Bologna, which ended in a dramatic comeback for the Bianconeri. The game, which took place in Turin, saw Juventus trailing 2-0 before mounting a spirited fightback to salvage a draw. ............

The manager also addressed his own dismissal during the match, taking responsibility for his actions: “What happened with Marchetti? He was right to send me off. I got angry and made a gesture that I should have avoided. I went overboard with my complaints.” ............

“Manchester City? I think there’s no better time to face City. There’s no better moment to take on a team of that caliber.”
