Genoa vs Juventus 0-3: Goals Flow Again for Juventus

Calcio | Serie A | 2024-2025 | Genoa-Juventus 0-3 | Reti di Vlahovic (2), Conceiçao | 28 settembre 2024

After a third successive 0-0 draw Juventus were trying everything to get their attack firing properly again. They travelled to Genoa this afternoon to try and end their scoring drought. Whatever Motta did in training this week obviously worked as they came away with a comprehensive 0-3 win as the goals flow again for Juventus.

The game was played behind closed doors after violent clashes between Genoa and Sampdoria supporters during the week that saw 8 arrests made. The Rossoblu lost that Coppa Italia game on penalties so their was plenty of motivation to get back to winning ways.

In a bizzare turn of events a fire started in the VAR room pre-game at the Luigi Ferraris stadium. While talk of the game being postponed died down it was still unclear if referee Andrea Colombo would be able to use the pitchside monitor. ............

Juventus enjoyed the majority of possession while Genoa sat back but, as is becoming habit, struggled to break down the opposition. ............

Juventus got the break they were hoping for two minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty. Koni De Winter obviously handled the ball to take it out of Yildiz’s path and the referee was well placed to see the action.

He pointed to the spot and Dusan Vlahovic stepped up to blast Juve in front and get their first league goal since August.

The Bianconeri kicked on from there. With 55 minutes on the clock Vlahovic doubled their lead as he took on a brilliant crossfield ball from Teun Koopmeiners with one touch and found the corner with his left foot. Suddenly it was all coming together for Juventus. ............

Motta was confident enough to make two changes with half an hour to play, Douglas Luiz and Francisco Conceicao being introduced.

The latter immediately caused trouble out wide, putting in a great ball that Koopmeiners smacked against the underside of the crossbar from close range. ............

Juventus wanted to put the cherry on top and with a minute left Conceicao did just that when he drifted in off the right to confidently stroke home a Thuram pass. The Portuguese attacker put in a great performance today and got the goal he deserved.

Motta will be a relieved man as the goals flow again for Juventus in Serie A. He’ll be hoping this wasn’t a one-off from Vlahovic either as both team and player look to build momentum.

genoa-v-juventus-serie-a-vlahovic-fagioli-koopmeiners.jpg

It was not a spectacular Juventus performance, but a brace from the MOTM, Dusan Vlahovic, helped the Bianconeri secure a 3-0 win against Genoa behind closed doors.

Juventus needed the minimum effort to beat Genoa 3-0 at Marassi on Saturday. ............

Genoa vs Juventus – player ratings

Genoa (3-5-2): Gollini 6; De Winter 4.5, Bani 5, Vasquez 5; Zanoli 5.5 (86′ Sabelli N/A), Frendrup 6, Badelj 6 (26′ Bohinen 5.5), Miretti 6 (69′ Kasa 5.5), Ahanor 5 (69′ Matturro 5.5); Pinamonti 5.5, Vitinha 5 (69′ Ankeye 5.5). Coach: Gilardino 5. ............

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Perin 6.5; Danilo 6, Kalulu 6.5 (74′ Savona 6), Bremer 6.5, Rouhi 6 (74′ Cambiaso 6); McKennie 6 (62′ Douglas Luiz 6), Fagioli 6.5; Nico Gonzalez 6 (62′ Conceiçao 7), Koopmeiners 7, Yildiz 6 (74′ Thuram 6.5); Vlahovic 7.5. Coach: Motta 6.5.

Best Juventus player – Vlahovic 7.5: Silenced critics with his goal celebration. His second strike was simply superb. Such a quick and powerful execution. That is precisely what Juventus expect from him. He hadn’t netted for a month. Now he has four goals in six Serie A matches. Top scorer with Mateo Retegui and Christian Pulisic.

Coach: Thiago Motta 6.5 – Juventus’ first half was clearly not good enough. Too slow, too sloppy and too similar to the Juventus of the recent past. Juventus made the most of it and eventually dominated for 90 minutes. Next up is RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Juventus Player Ratings vs Genoa: Vlahovic Silences his Detractors

b89449c8-cb4e-4fd1-a55f-caa413b66053-e1727547894401.jpeg

Juventus (4-1-4-1)

Mattia Perin – 6.5

 ............

Danilo – 6

The Juventus captain looked rusty in the early going, giving away an early freekick and fumbling a clearance, but he grew stronger as the match wore on, especially after switching to a central role.

Pierre Kalulu – 6.5

A solid display from the Frenchman who started at centre-back before reverting to right-back in the second period. He’s cementing himself as an important player in Thiago Motta’s plans.

Gleison Bremer – 7

The former Torino man produced another formidable showing at the back. Never gave Andrea Pinamonti and Vitinho a sniff at goal.

Jonas Rouhi – 5.5

The young Swede seemed nervous on his full senior debut, giving away possession cheaply on a few occasions. He also struggled in his duel with Alessandro Zanoli. But he played a role in the buildup on the second goal.

Nicoló Fagioli – 6.5

 ............

Nico Gonzalez – 6

 ............

Weston McKennie – 6.5

 ............

Teun Koopmeiners – 7

The Dutchman is slowly but surely establishing himself as the most elemental player in the Old Lady’s midfield. Provided the assist for Vlahovic’s second with a clever vertical play and set up Conceicao with a cheeky dummy.

Kenan Yildiz – 6

A decent showing from the Turkish teenager, even though Juventus fans will be expecting more from their Number 10. Had an important in stimulating the spot-kick, but seemed more dangerous when attacking from the center.

Dusan Vlahovic – 7

It’s almost impossible to overstate just how important it was for the Serbian to end his goal drought. Showed his composure with a powerful spot-kick before bagging another with a clinical finish. He was very close to sealing the hattrick but was denied by the woodwork.

Substitutes

Francisco Conceicao – 7

A superb cameo from the young Portuguese who marked his return from injury by scoring his maiden Serie A goal. Genoa could sense danger every time he had the ball at his feet.

Douglas Luiz – 6

 ............

Khephren Thuram – 6.5

 ............

Nicolò Savona – N/A

Andrea Cambiaso – N/A

Juventus manager Thiago Motta praises team’s strength after Genoa victory

Genoa-Juventus | Le parole di Thiago Motta - Juventus

Following Juventus’ 3-0 win over Genoa, secured by Vlahovic’s penalty, manager Thiago Motta shared his thoughts on the team’s performance in the post-match interview.

Motta began by discussing the match itself: “Apart from the tactical change, I said very little between the first and second half. The players always stay alone for a few minutes and try to tell each other what’s needed. I’m very happy with how those on the bench participated as well. This is a strong group composed of strong players.”

The Juventus coach then focused on Vlahovic’s performance: “ ............ It’s not that I wasn’t happy when I substituted him, but I simply needed something different. He’s a very important player for us, and he knows that well.”

Motta concluded by addressing the team’s defensive solidity: “It’s an important statistic because it shows that this is a very solid team, from the attack all the way to the defense.” ............

Juventus 3 - Genoa 0: Initial reaction and random observations

FBL-ITA-SERIA-GENOA-JUVENTUS

I wouldn’t have blamed you for having the type of “Here we go again” thoughts as Juventus walked off the field after the halftime whistle blew at the Marassi on Saturday night. Mainly because I was having them, too, after watching have yet another virtually non-existent half in front of goal. ............

Following a first half in which Juventus’ problems from the previous three Serie A outings were certainly present again, the same can’t be said for how the Bianconeri came out of the halftime break. Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, Juventus had broken its lengthy domestic scoring drought that dates back to the final minutes of their 3-0 win over Hellas Verona in late August. It was fitting that, just like in that win, it was Dusan Vlahovic getting a brace to lead the way offensively, scoring a penalty and then hammering home a Teun Koopmeiners dime of an assist less than seven minutes later.

Throw in Francisco Conceição’s late goal and Juventus were able to secure a 3-0 win over Genoa to get back on that winning feeling against somebody in Serie A once again. ............

And let me tell ya something, folks: I certainly like the trend of winning 3-0 rather than the trend of playing out scoreless draws because Juve was unable to do much of anything in front of goal. I’m guessing that I’m not the only one who feels that way; it’s not like this is some sort of controversial opinion that will split this blog into factions of where they stand. ............

The best thing about it all is that Motta and his squad saw what they were struggling with, made changes both tactically and mentally, and then went out and executed it just as well as they could have hoped. The execution is what this team has been lacking of late, but not against Genoa. This time, they got it right both with approach and execution in the second half.

And for that, we can be thankful because it meant the streak of nil-nils died a happy death. RIP to the Juventus domestic goal drought. Let us never see anything like you ever again.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Playing in front of an empty stadium took many of us back to four years ago when the pandemic was still raging in many parts of the world and we could hear every single word Carlo Pinsoglio was yelling to his teammates from the bench. I don’t miss those days. ............
  • Juventus xG in the first half: 0.04.
  • Two shots in the first half — two! If you barely shoot, you have even less of a chance of scoring. Come on, fellas, this isn’t all that tough to figure out.
  • Juventus passes in the first half: 299.
  • Genoa passes in the first half: 145.
  • Thank goodness that second half happened or else I would be very grumpy.
  • Teun Koopmeiners with a pretty assist on Vlahovic’s second and a slick dummy on Juve’s third goal of the day? Well, that is what I love to see from my new favorite Dutchman.
  • Francisco Conceição is low to the ground, extremely skilled, very quick and I think I’m starting to really enjoy him being at Juventus. Welcome back, young man. Keep doing what you’ve done in your first couple of appearance in bianconero.
  • Douglas Luiz was the other half of the Portuguese-centric double substitution along with Conceição, and this was easily the Brazilian midfielder’s best showing as a Juve player. In about half an hour of game time, Douglas Luiz completed 93% of his passes, had a pair of key passes and had one hell of a pretty lob over the top that led to Vlahovic nearly getting a hat trick. That’ll do just fine, Douglas. More of that, please.
  • I don’t know who needed a game like that more, Vlahovic or those who are frothing at the mouth every time he goes a couple of games without scoring. Suddenly he’s tied atop the Serie A scoring charts. Imagine that with all the heat he’s gotten so far this season. ............
  • Jonas Rouhi was not great but also not a total disaster. For a first-ever Serie A start, that’s fine with me because we all know those nerves must have been pumping early on. ............
  • Pierre Kalulu, signing of the summer?
  • Just go give Milan that €14 million now, Cristiano. Kalulu’s worth it. ............
  • Good on Motta for getting some of his most important players a rest in the second half once they had control of things after going up 2-0. Those are some minutes that a few players — like, say, Kenan Yildiz — are probably happy not to have on their legs.
  • Closing thought: Will Juventus win 3-0 or have a scoreless draw against RB Leipzig on Wednesday? You know, since those are the only two options we apparently have this season.

Nicola Amoruso explains why he thinks Juventus can win the Scudetto

Genoa-Juventus | Le parole di Thiago Motta - Juventus

Former Juventus star Nicola Amoruso has shared his thoughts on the club’s chances of winning the league this season, expressing his admiration for Thiago Motta’s team.

The Bianconeri have started Motta’s tenure in impressive form, and their fans are thrilled with the team’s performances. ............

However, not everyone shares this prediction, as many believe Inter Milan is well-positioned to defend its title.

However, Amoruso is confident, and he has his reasons.

“There are several factors that make me optimistic, first of all, Thiago Motta was chosen by a winner like Giuntoli and the way of forming the team tactically by focusing on the individual who must work for the collective by making himself totally available will work because the way he does it is very entertaining for the players, even if it requires concentration and sacrifice. And what is not insignificant, Thiago Motta won as a player and he carries this with him as a coach. In short, for me Juve is in pole position to win”. ............

Journalist believes Juventus keeping clean sheets is a recipe for success

Perché gioca Perin e non Di Gregorio in Empoli-Juventus: "C'è totale fiducia" | Goal.com Italia

Juventus returned to winning ways against Genoa yesterday, keeping yet another clean sheet in the league.

The Bianconeri have conceded only one goal across all competitions this season, and no team has managed to score against them in Serie A. ............

Journalist Vittorio Oreggia is impressed, stating that not conceding goals is a proven recipe for success in Italian football. He said:

“Beyond the clear victory after an honestly difficult first half, the difference is made by the fact that Juventus continues not to concede goals. And in Italy those who do not concede goals go very far, very far.” ...........

Capello praises Juventus for their turnaround performance against Genoa

Conceicao non nasconde l'emozione: «Felice per il mio primo gol»

Fabio Capello was impressed with Juventus’ performance in their match against Genoa yesterday, praising them for how they secured the win.

Initially, it seemed they were heading for another draw, but in the second half, Juve turned on the style and won 3-0. ............

The Bianconeri are determined to challenge for trophies, and their performance against Genoa certainly impressed Capello. He told:

“The Bianconeri disappointed a bit in the first half, playing along the lines of previous performances: slow and predictable ball possession. But in the second half, once the result was unlocked, they showed that they have excellent potential.

“I really liked the desire of the attackers from Thiago Motta’s team: they put a lot of pressure on the opponents to recover the ball and they threw themselves well into spaces. After the 1-0, Genoa lowered the defensive level and for Juve it was all easy .” ...........

Preview: RB Leipzig vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

EA Sports FC 25 | RB Leipzig vs Juventus Turin - RB Arena | Gameplay PS5

After losing to a late goal on the opening matchday, RB Leipzig will target their first Champions League win of the season when unbeaten Juventus pay them a visit on Wednesday evening.

While the Bundesliga side were painfully edged out in Madrid, their Italian counterparts returned to UEFA's top competition with a win over Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

Match preview

Faced with a particularly tough run of league-phase fixtures, Leipzig were keen to take at least one point from their first game - perhaps the toughest of all, away to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano.

In addition to facing Serie A heavyweights Juventus and Inter Milan, Die Roten Bullen must also meet Liverpool and Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon, plus Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa. ............

Amid an impressive start to his reign in Turin, Juventus coach Thiago Motta steered his side to success on their Champions League comeback - a potentially tricky fixture against Eredivisie champions PSV.

Highlighting a changing of the guard under new management, 19-year-old Kenan Yildiz scored a brilliant opener in the Bianconeri's 3-1 victory, as Motta named Juve's youngest-ever lineup in the competition, with an average age of 25 years and 149 days.

Yildiz also became their youngest Champions League scorer, with the only minor blot being the concession of a stoppage-time goal that remains the only one they have conceded all season.

Undefeated in seven games so far, Juventus followed a strange streak of three goalless draws in Serie A by beating Genoa 3-0 at the weekend, with Dusan Vlahovic striking twice in a stellar second-half display at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

While several big-money signings are yet to truly find their rhythm, Juve are now well-placed to improve a dismal recent record on the road - at least in continental competition.

The two-time European champions have lost four of their last five Champions League away matches, including each of the last three - their longest such run for a decade.

Motta is now looking to end that sequence and become the third Juventus manager to win his first two games in UEFA's elite competition, following in the footsteps of two greats: Marcello Lippi in 1995 and Fabio Capello nine years later. ...........

Team News

 ...........

Meanwhile, Juventus could again be without Timothy Weah (ankle), and Arkadiusz Milik has yet to feature this season after suffering a knee injury on international duty, but Francisco Conceicao came on to score a late goal on Saturday after recovering from a thigh problem.

Dusan Vlahovic notched twice in Genoa, and the Serbian striker has been directly involved in four goals from eight Champions League appearances to date, including an assist against PSV.

Once again, he should lead the Bianconeri's front line in Germany, with support from Teun KoopmeinersNico Gonzalez and Kenan Yildiz. Elsewhere, first-choice goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio should return in place of deputy Mattia Perin.

RB Leipzig possible starting lineup:
Gulacsi; Geertruida, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; Baumgartner, Haidara, Vermeeren, Simons; Sesko, Openda

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Bremer, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Fagioli; Gonzalez, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

We say: RB Leipzig 1-0 Juventus

Leipzig have conceded just two goals in four Bundesliga matches so far this season - and both of those came in the course of beating champions Bayer Leverkusen - while Juventus have shipped only one overall.

Naturally, it could be a close-fought contest, with one moment of magic enough to make the difference between two well-matched teams. A more potent attack should ensure that the hosts take maximum points.

Thiago Motta could launch new-look Juventus midfield against Leipzig

Kan een afbeelding zijn van 3 mensen, mensen die voetbal spelen, mensen die volleyballen en tekst

Juventus coach Thiago Motta could be enticed to unleash a midfield trio that constitutes three summer signings in the upcoming Champions League contest. ............

Since the start of the campaign, Motta has been consistently tweaking his starting lineup, and he’s expected to do likewise for the clash against RB Leipzig.

The Juventus manager could finally launch the midfield trio that the fans were awaiting in the summer, fielding Khephren Thuram and Douglas Luiz behind Teun Koopmeiners.

These three players cost the Serie A giants a combined 125 million euros in the summer. However, we’ve yet to see them together in the starting lineup. ...........

The Frenchman and the Brazilian both did well after coming off the bench against Genoa. Thuram produced the assist for Francisco Conceicao, while Luiz showcased his passing range and helped bring the ball forward with exquisite vertical plays.

So it remains to be seen if the time has finally come for the new trio to combine with one another from the first minute.

Thiago Motta: “It’ll be an open game against Leipzig, we are two similar teams.”

Lipsia-Juve, Thiago Motta: "Qualcuno le ha detto la formazione? A me non cambia niente..."

Ahead of Juventus’ upcoming Champions League match against RB Leipzig, head coach Thiago Motta shared his thoughts on the challenge awaiting his team. ............

“Leipzig lost while playing well and showing important football against Atletico Madrid,” Motta began. “I think it will be an open match. They will press high with the intention to attack. It will be a different squad to face compared to those we’ve seen so far.”

“We will try to take control of the game from the start. These are two similar teams with young players, great energy, intensity, and a desire to move forward. We must compete with them to keep possession and then play well, attacking them in a balanced way. Their counterattacks are dangerous.” ............

When asked about striker Dusan Vlahovic, Motta replied: “He’s been doing well since day one. For all strikers, it’s important to score, but our game is not just about that. Dusan has been giving his all from the first day; he’s a positive leader.” ...........

The Red Bull Arena in Leipzig is set to host a thrilling Champions League encounter on Wednesday evening as RB Leipzig welcome Italian giants Juventus. Both teams enter this match with contrasting fortunes from their opening fixtures, setting the stage for an intriguing battle.

RB Leipzig come into this match looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener. ............

Juventus, under new manager Thiago Motta, made a triumphant return to the Champions League with a 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven. The Bianconeri have remained undefeated in their seven matches this season, conceding just one goal. Their weekend 3-0 win against Genoa in Serie A further underlines their current form. ............

Marco Rose’s Leipzig are known for their high-pressing, attacking style. The potential inclusion of summer signing Antonio Nusa or the experienced Christoph Baumgartner could add an extra dimension to their attack.

Thiago Motta has brought a fresh approach to Juventus, fielding the club’s youngest-ever Champions League lineup in their opener. The Italian tactician will likely continue to trust in youth, with 19-year-old Kenan Yildiz potentially playing a key role. ...........

Expected Starting XIs

RB Leipzig (4-2-2-2): Gulacsi; Geertruida, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; Baumgartner, Haidara, Vermeeren, Simons; Sesko, Openda

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Kalulu, Gatti, Bremer, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Fagioli; Gonzalez, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

RB Leipzig vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction

Watch Leipzig vs. Juventus Live Stream | DAZN CA

RB Leipzig will face another tough challenge in the UEFA Champions League when they host Juventus at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday.

Looking at the fixtures list, most big teams have only two or three big oppositions to play for, meaning the home side probably have the most challenging fixtures list in the Champions League league phase. Having already suffered defeat in the opening matchday to a late Atletico Madrid goal, RB Leipzig are now readying themselves to host an unbeaten Juventus side. ............

Meanwhile, Juventus will feel confident about this clash away in Germany after an unbeaten start to their season in all competitions. The Bianconeri opened their Champions League account with a 3-1 win at home over Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. Had it not been for a late consolation from Ismael Saibari, Thiago Motta’s men would have maintained their 100% defensive record in all competitions.

They have yet to concede a goal after six rounds of Serie A fixtures, and their 3-0 win over Genoa at the weekend also ended their three-match winless run. With that win at the weekend, which also ended their goal drought in the league, Juventus will be itching to take on Leipzig and collect another win in their quest to finish in the top eight.

Team News & Tactics

RB Leipzig

Marco Rose will continue to deploy an attacking 4-4-2 formation against Juventus. Once again, Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda will take charge of the attacking setup. Both strikers scored at the weekend, and the manager will hope to see their names again on Wednesday. ............

Probable Lineup (4-4-2): Gulacsi; Geertruida, Orban, Lukeba, Raum; Baumgartner, Seiwald, Vermeeren, Simons; Sesko, Openda

hr2e1gjCVWNFLzG2HS8S.png

Juventus

Thiago Motta does not have too many concerns about injuries and absentees, as Arkadiusz Milik, Timothy Weah, and Vasilije Adzic are the confirmed absentees ahead of this trip to Leipzig. Motta did rest a few of his stars from the weekend’s game, and given his bent on using many of his squad options, this game against Leipzig could see the manager field a strong lineup.

Juan Cabal could be the only change to the backline, as Jonas Jakob Rouhi, who started at left-back against Genoa, could make way. Motta will continue to experiment with his midfield, as it appears he has not found his best pairing yet. The Juventus side has seen a constant chopping and changing of that double-pivot, and this Leipzig game will see another change to the setup.

Both starters at the weekend in Weston McKennie and Nicolo Fagioli will drop out as two of Douglas Luiz, Manuel Locatelli, and Khephren Thuram could come into the lineup. On paper, Luiz and Locatelli should form the partnership in the middle, while the front four is primarily expected to stay the same.

Teun Koopmeiners will once again be tasked with the creative duties on the side, while Nico Gonzalez and Kenan Yildiz are the preferred choices for the wide roles. Dusan Vlahovic will continue to lead the line following his goalscoring performance at the weekend.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Di Gregorio; Danilo, Kalulu, Bremer, Cabal; Locatelli, Luiz; Gonzalez, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

9INOAf6wpw48tTpRXP92.png

Key Stats

  • Juventus are unbeaten in all competitions this season, conceding just once.
  • Juventus remain the only side in Europe’s top five leagues yet to concede a goal in domestic action.
  • RB Leipzig have lost only once in 19 games across all competitions.
  • RB Leipzig are on a club-record run of Bundesliga games without a defeat. ...........

Player to Watch

Benjamin Sesko

The young Slovenian striker’s decision to stay put and continue his development at Leipzig may eventually prove to be the right call. ...........

Prediction

RB Leipzig 2-2 Juventus

Both teams are coming into this encounter in a superior vein of form, and either manager will want to assert their dominance in the game. Leipzig is coming off a big win at the weekend and will look to take home advantage against Juventus.

The defensive resilience of this Juventus side will prove tricky for Leipzig’s otherwise livewire attackers. The game seems poised to go either way, meaning there’s a high chance of an entertaining draw in Germany, with a predicted score of a 2-2 draw.

Enrico Valentini tells Juventus what to expect from RB Leipzig

RB LEIPZIG ⚪️🔴 MEN SQUAD TEAMS - Bundesliga Season 2024/2025 with Update Transfer | FAN Football

FC Nürnberg’s Enrico Valentini has sent a message to Juventus about RB Leipzig ahead of their Champions League clash today.

Juventus has been in fine form both in Europe and domestically this season, but their match against Leipzig will be an even bigger test for the Bianconeri. ............

While Juve has been solid defensively and tough to break down, they are well aware that Leipzig is equally strong at the back, making this an evenly-matched contest.

It means we are in for an interesting game, and Valentini said:

“Without beating around the bush, they are a tough team that makes intensity and aggression their best weapons. The attack is among the best three in the Bundesliga, then in terms of names (Sesko, Openda and Xavi) they have almost nothing to envy the top clubs. I really like their game”. ............

Ten-man Juventus stun Leipzig with superb win in Germany

Vlahovic-RB-Leipzig.jpg

Juventus earned a sensational 3-2 win against RB Leipzig despite being down to ten men for the majority of the second half.

The game started in the worst possible way for Juventus, as they lost Gleison Bremer within the first six minutes due to injury and Nicolas Gonzalez was also substituted minutes later following an injury, with Francisco Conceicao replacing him.

Despite these setbacks, the Bianconeri controlled the ball in phases during the first half, but Leipzig opened the scoring through Benjamin Sesko. ............

However, after the break, they responded almost immediately with a goal from the in-form Dusan Vlahovic.

Juventus had matched their hosts all night and deserved that equaliser, but their joy was short-lived as Michele Di Gregorio was harshly sent off for handling the ball outside his area.

From the resulting free-kick, Douglas Luiz conceded a penalty, and Sesko was on hand to score his second of the game.

Nevertheless, Juventus struck back almost immediately with another fine goal from Vlahovic, and the Bianconeri continued to attack their German hosts bravely despite being a man down. ............

Just when it seemed the Bianconeri would settle for a draw, a moment of magic from Conceicao gave Juventus the lead!

Leipzig, stunned, tried to find an equaliser, but Juventus, brimming with confidence, matched them in every area of the pitch. Mattia Perin was particularly superb in goal.

Francisco-Conceicao-RB-Leipzig-Juventus-goal.jpg

Juventus incredibly fought back from 2-1 down with 10 men in Germany to secure a stunning 3-2 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig with Dusan Vlahovic’s brace and a Francisco Conceicao solo effort. ............

The Germans had a big chance after four minutes when Lois Openda shrugged off Gleison Bremer to roll across for a panicked Pierre Kalulu clearance, but the Brazilian turned his ankle and knee during the incident and had to be replaced by Federico Gatti.

Incredibly, he was followed moments later by Nico Gonzalez with a thigh issue, replaced by Francisco Conceicao, so Juve had lost two players and used up two substitution slots within 12 minutes.

RB Leipzig took the lead with a sensational goal, as Openda’s absolutely inspired ball over the top found Sesko to control with the right foot, let it bounce and volley in with the left off the underside of the crossbar, giving Michele Di Gregorio no chance. It was only the second goal Juve had conceded all season. ............

Juve came out fighting for the restart, as first Teun Koopmeiners thumped the far post on a McKennie assist when he really should’ve done better.

Moments later, Andrea Cambiaso’s cross from the left saw Vlahovic sneak in front of his marker to sweep in at the near post.

Leipzig also threatened to restore their lead when Openda’s solo effort smacked against the upright, though moments later Openda was going clear on goal when Di Gregorio came sprinting outside the box and his glove just grazed the ball. Following a VAR review, the goalkeeper was shown a red card for stopping the clear scoring opportunity.

It got even worse for Juventus on the resulting free kick, which Douglas Luiz charged down with his arm while trying to protect his face from Xavi Simons. It was the ex-Aston Villa midfielder’s first touch of the game, the referee awarded a penalty following the VAR review and Sesko converted the spot-kick.

Nonetheless, 10-man Juventus equalised moments later with a remarkable solo strike from Vlahovic, who bent the vicious finish into the top corner from distance. ............

Instead, Juventus turned it around to lead 3-2 when Francisco Conceicao dribbled past David Raum and bent the finish into the far bottom corner from the tightest of angles. ............

Juventus held on through 10 minutes of added time for an extraordinary victory and have six points from two Champions League games.

RB Leipzig 2-3 Juventus

Sesko 30, pen 65 (L), Vlahovic 50, 69 (J), Conceicao 82 (J)

Sent off: Di Gregorio 59 (J)

Juventus player ratings v RB Leipzig – Three players share top rating

RB-Leipzig-v-Juventus.jpg

Juventus earned a memorable 3-2 win against RB Leipzig in the Champions League this evening, and most of their players had a good day at the office.

Michele di Gregorio – 5.0

He had a good game until he was sent off for that handling outside the area.

Nicolo Savona – 6.5

 ............

Gleison Bremer – N/A

Subbed off very early on. Hopefully, he has not suffered a serious injury.

Pierre Kalulu – 7.5

Another solid day at the office as a centre-back. Surely, his move will be made permanent soon.

Andrea Cambiaso – 7.5

Defended well even in the closing stages of the game and provided a fine assist for a Vlahovic goal.

Weston McKennie – 7.0

 ............

Nicolo Fagioli – 8.0

What a superb game he had as he penetrated Leipzig’s defence time and time again. Unlucky not to have scored.

Nicolas Gonzalez – N/A

 ............

Teun Koopmeiners – 6.5

 ............

Kenan Yildiz – 7.0

He was having a great game before he had to be subbed off because of the red card.

Dusan Vlahovic – 8.0

Another superb performance from the striker. His second goal could win him the best goal of the round. What a player!

Substitutes

Federico Gatti – 7.0

He came on for the injured Bremer and delivered a fine performance, but not spectacular.

Francisco Conceicao – 8.0

He came on for the injured Gonzalez and changed the game with his running before his superb solo goal to earn Juve the points.

Mattia Perin – 7.0

 ............

Douglas Luiz – 6.0

 ............

Juventus Player Ratings vs Leipzig: Heroic Vlahovic, Marvelous Conceicao

4047565-82088948-2560-1440.jpg

 ............

Juventus (4-2-3-1)

Michele Di Gregorio – 4.5

The former Monza man was left with no chance on the opener. He was unfortunate to touch the ball with his hand while rushing off his line, leaving his side with a man down.

Nicolò Savona – 6

 ............

Pierre Kalulu – 7.5

A robust display at the back from the Frenchman who produced a host of vital interceptions. He’s already establishing himself as a protagonist at the club.

Gleison Bremer – N/A

The Juventus captain only lasted for five minutes before sustaining a knock and leaving his place on the pitch for Gatti along with the armband.

Andrea Cambiaso – 6.5

 ............

Weston McKennie – 7

A generous outing from the American who was everywhere on the pitch. He made an inch-perfect tackle to win back the ball which culminated in the winner.

Nicolò Fagioli – 7.5

A formidable display in the middle of the park from the Italian who was pulling the strings for Juventus while showcasing his dribbling and passing skills.

Nico Gonzalez – N/A

 ............

Teun Koopmeiners – 6

The Dutchman still lacks the killer instinct from his Atalanta days. He was unlucky to see his shot crash off the post

Kenan Yildiz – 5.5

When Di Gregorio saw red, the Turkish teenager was the obvious sacrificial lamb, which is telling enough. His impact on the left wing was very limited.

Dusan Vlahovic – 9

A magical evening for the Serbian who expertly latched on Cambiaso’s square ball to flick it past the goalkeeper. He then dragged the 10-man Juventus back into the match once more with a jaw-dropping strike.

Substitutes

Federico Gatti – 6.5

 ............

Francisco Conceicao – 8.5

After scoring his first Serie A goal over the weekend, the Portuguese has now cemented himself as a hero among Juventus supporters with his maiden Champions League. He dribbled past his markers before drilling the ball past the goalkeeper to complete a historic comeback. Also instigated Vlahovic’s first goal.

Mattia Perin – 7

 ............

Douglas Luiz – 4

The Brazilian gave away a spot kick seconds following his introduction while protecting his face with his hand, and his cameo never got off the ground. Gave the ball away cheaply and wasn’t on song with his teammates.

Thiago-Motta-Juventus-Champions-League.jpg

Thiago Motta praised 10-man Juventus for the comeback victory away to RB Leipzig. ‘Negative incidents happen, but the important thing is how you react to them. We wanted to prove our superiority on the field.’

It was truly an eventful match in Leipzig, as Gleison Bremer and Nico Gonzalez went off injured in the opening 11 minutes, then RB Leipzig were leading 2-1 when Michele Di Gregorio was sent off for handling outside the box on the hour mark.

“We still need to understand what happened with Bremer and Nico, they need tests and hope the problems are not too serious, but it’s too early to say.” ............

“We played well in the first half too, even if there were a few technical errors, but we did even better when going down to 10 men,” Thiago Motta told.

“I think the difference in the second half was that we had more belief and wanted to prove our superiority on the pitch. The first half was good, but in the second we needed to prove that we were superior to our opponents and therefore deserved the victory.”

“The courage was shown by my players, not by me, so they deserve the credit. The team gave the feeling it genuinely believed in what we had talked about before the match,” continued Motta. ............

“Negative incidents happen in games, they were truly very negative today, but the important thing is how you react to them. We kept our heads high, showed the right attitude and these are the foundations you need for a team at this level. We proved with this attitude we could overturn a very, very complicated game.”

Juventus now have six points from two Champions League games under Motta, having beaten PSV Eindhoven 3-1 and now RB Leipzig 3-2 at the Red Bull Arena. ............

Controversial Penalty Decision in Leipzig vs Juventus Match

Italian sports papers blamed referee François Letexier on Thursday and giornalaccio rosa said the French official could have ‘ruined the game’ even if Juventus still managed to secure a 3-2 win in Leipzig.

It was an eventful night at the Red Bull Arena last night. French referee Letexier ignored Juventus’ penalty kick appeals in the first half and needed VAR checks to give Michele Di Gregorio a straight red and Leipzig a penalty only five minutes later. ............

Leipzig’s penalty kick was “debatable” because Douglas Luiz tried to protect his face. However, VAR “suddenly woke up” and urged Letexier to the pitchside monitor.

Letexier should have done the same to check the Vlahovic penalty incident in the first half but didn’t do so in a “mix of distraction, hasty and arrogance.”

The Bianconeri were like an “anti-theft team” in Leipzig and managed to win the game “despite the referee.” ............

Serie A Preview: Juventus vs Cagliari – Team News, Line-ups & Prediction

Juventus_Cagliari_Preview.jpg

Sunday’s Serie A action kicks off at the Allianz Stadium with a ‘David vs Goliath’ clash between title-bidding Juventus and relegation-battling Cagliari. Despite the latter’s underdog status, both teams will take the field in high spirits amid a rich vein of form. ............

Brimming with confidence following another free-scoring performance, Juventus will look to protect their unbeaten league record (W3, D3) against Cagliari. However, the visitors seem to be finding their feet under new manager Davide Nicola after an unenviable five-game start in Serie A (D2, L3). ............

Match Preview

Juventus

Buoyed by back-to-back triumphs for the first time since sweeping Hellas Verona and Como aside in the opening two Serie A outings, the record-time Italian champions are keen to make it three in a row for the first time under Motta. Starting this matchday only a point adrift of early pacesetters Napoli, Juventus can seek inspiration in their outrageous scoring form.

Despite three consecutive scoreless league stalemates, the Bianconeri have proved more than capable of packing up punch, with all five competitive wins they’ve posted this term seeing them score precisely three goals. Regardless of several top-flight setbacks in September, another goalless draw would be an anomaly, given the history of this fixture.

Juventus last drew 0-0 against Cagliari in 1997, suggesting fans in attendance could be in for a treat come Sunday early afternoon. Adding to this sentiment, the Turin heavyweights have netted at least two goals in all seven home league victories against this opposition since September 2016.

Cagliari

The last time Cagliari left the Allianz Stadium undefeated was in May 2015, when they held Juventus to a 1-1 draw. The visitors would undoubtedly sign up for an identical outcome before the kick-off, considering they enter this round level on points with 18th-placed Lecce despite Monday’s triumph at Stadio Ennio Tardini. ............

Team News

Juventus lost Bremer to a potentially long-term knee injury against Leipzig. Federico Gatti, who replaced him in that match, will likely partner up with Danilo at the heart of Motta’s defense on Sunday. The Brazilian ace has joined Arkadiusz Milik and Timothy Weah on the sidelines, while Paul Pogba remains inactive due to suspension. ............

Juventus vs Cagliari Potential Line-ups

Juventus (4-2-3-1): Michele Di Gregorio; Pierre Kalulu, Danilo, Federico Gatti, Andrea Cambiaso; Manuel Locatelli, Weston McKennie; Francisco Conceicao, Teun Koopmeiners, Kenan Yildiz; Dusan Vlahovic.

Cagliari (4-2-3-1): Simone Scuffet; Gabriele Zappa, Yerry Mina, Sebastiano Luperto, Obert; Antoine Makoumbou, Razvan Marin; Nadir Zortea, Gianluca Gaetano, Zito Luvumbo; Roberto Piccoli.

Juventus vs Cagliari Prediction

With Cagliari averaging just 0.66 goals per game in Serie A this season, not even the bravest traveling fans would dare to dream big ahead of this trip. Juventus are the only team in Europe’s traditional top-five leagues yet to concede a league goal in 2024/25, highlighting the scale of the task awaiting Nicola’s side on Sunday.

As such, we can easily envisage a multi-goal margin win for the hosts, likely to be accompanied by another clean sheet.

Prediction: Juventus to Win

Preview: Juventus vs. Cagliari - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs Cagliari Prediction, lineups, betting tips & odds

Following back-to-back wins away from home, Juventus return to Turin on Sunday, when they play host to Serie A strugglers Cagliari.

Having moved within touching distance of top spot in Italy, Juve then emerged victorious in a five-goal thriller against RB Leipzig; meanwhile, Cagliari recently secured their first league win of the season.

Match preview© Im

Demonstrating their resilience under the regime of head coach Thiago Motta, Juventus clawed their way back from 2-1 down with 10 men to secure maximum points in their second Champions League fixture, with star striker Dusan Vlahovic rising to the challenge by providing two crucial goals.

The Bianconeri overturned RB Leipzig on German soil, despite Bremer suffering a serious knee injury within the first few minutes and goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio being sent off with half an hour left to play.

Against the odds, a superb strike from Vlahovic pulled the visitors level, before substitute Francisco Conceicao embarked on a solo run and fired home a late winner.

Juve had previously beaten Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven 3-1, and those Champions League goals remain the only ones conceded by their disciplined defence across all competitions - though they will now be missing Bremer for the rest of the campaign.

Only Bayern Munich have faced fewer shots on average throughout Europe's top five leagues, while the Turin giants have conceded fewer shots on target (an average of 1.3 per game) than any other side.

Including last week's 3-0 win over Genoa, Motta's men have kept a clean sheet in each of their first six Serie A matches, setting a new record for Italy's most successful club: only three teams have managed shut-outs in all of their first seven, and none since the great AC Milan team of 1993-94.

As Juve have won their last seven league meetings with Cagliari on home turf - keeping five clean sheets in the process - they will expect to continue in that vein on Sunday and sign off for the international break in style. ............

Team News Imago

Midweek medical tests confirmed that Juventus defender Bremer sustained an ACL injury during the Bianconeri's Champions League win over Leipzig, so the Brazil international will now be sidelined for several months.

Federico Gatti is therefore set to partner Pierre Kalulu in the hosts' back four, while Wednesday's match-winner Sergio Conceicao could replace Nico Gonzalez, who also limped off injured last time out.

Furthermore, Arkadiusz Milik has opted to undergo surgery on a longstanding knee problem, but Tim Weah could be back in the squad after an ankle injury.

With no other like-for-like options, Dusan Vlahovic is set to start again, as he meets his favourite opponents: the Serbian striker has scored six goals in nine league appearances against Cagliari, including two direct free kicks.

Meanwhile, the visitors will be without Mateusz Wieteska once again, while forward duo Leonardo Pavoletti and Gianluca Lapadula are both major doubts.

Roberto Piccoli and Zito Luvumbo could therefore continue up front, with support from either Nicolas Viola or Gianluca Gaetano.

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Danilo, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, McKennie; Conceicao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahovic

Cagliari possible starting lineup:
Scuffet; Zappa, Mina, Luperto, Obert; Makoumbou, Marin; Zortea, Gaetano, Luvumbo; Piccoli

We say: Juventus 2-0 Cagliari

Given Cagliari's lack of bite - and their dismal record against Juve in Turin - the hosts should continue their remarkable clean-sheet streak for another 90 minutes.

Juventus appear to be serious Scudetto contenders this season, so they will not let relatively modest opposition stop them in Serie A's Sunday lunchtime contest.
