AS Roma vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction

Roma vs Juventus Prediction - Serie A - 05/05/2024

AS Roma, who face Juventus this weekend, have been resilient under Daniele De Rossi, losing only four games since the legendary former midfielder took over. They did suffer their latest defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen, who took a brilliant 2-0 lead in the Europa League semifinal first leg in Rome. ............

The fact that Italy have a fifth Champions League spot makes the pressure less on Juventus heading into the final few games of their season. From being title contenders at one stage of the season, the Bianconeri are now fighting tooth and nail to consolidate their third place, as Massimiliano Allegri will not want any more hiccups along the way.

Juventus had a golden opportunity even to go close to second place in Milan, but they could only manage a draw with the Rossoneri on the previous matchday. Should Milan win at the weekend, they might race away with the runners-up spot.

Hence, Juventus must avoid a defeat against Roma to keep a stronghold of a top-four place. But in that scenario, they might loosen their grip on the third spot with Bologna lurking closely behind. Overall, the three Champions League positions could still be interchanged before the season ends, with Roma, Juventus and Bologna all hunting for supremacy, with Atalanta and Lazio in the mix.

Team News & Tactics

AS Roma

Daniele De Rossi will have a triple boost as he welcomes Zeki Celik from his European suspension. At the same time, Diego Llorente and Leandro Paredes will be available again after serving domestic bans. ............

Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Llorente, Angelino; Bove, Paredes, Pellegrini; Baldanzi, Lukaku, El Shaarawy

Juventus

Apart from Mattia De Sciglio, Kenan Yildiz and Alex Sandro, Massimiliano Allegri has no fitness concerns with his squad. So, he will only look to make a few changes.

Allegri will line up with the usual back three: Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, and Danilo, who are taking shape, with Andrea Cambiaso and Filip Kostic stationed in those wing-back roles for Juventus.

Similarly, Allegri will not look to make any alterations to his midfield, with Weston McKennie, Adrien Rabiot, and Manuel Locatelli firmly settled in their respective roles. Meanwhile, Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa will continue to lead the attack for the Bianconeri, with the former still harbouring hopes of catching Lautaro Martinez.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa

ZxOoeLzhZml89Cgnu5bj.png

Key Stats

  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 12 of Roma’s last 15 games in Serie A.
  • AS Roma are winless in three of their last four matches in all competitions.
  • AS Roma can go within three points of Juventus with a win on Sunday.
  • Juventus have drawn their last three matches in Serie A.
  • Juventus have only two wins from their last 13 league games.

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

 ............

There are still some games to go, although Vlahovic might have to be highly prolific in those to stand a chance to catch Lautaro Martinez. While there’s less chance for that to happen, he can still propel Juventus’s chances of finishing third or even second with some stellar displays in the remaining games, starting with the visit to Rome.

Prediction

AS Roma 1-1 Juventus

AC Milan tried on the last matchday to ensure that Juventus did not get closer to them on the table, and the Bianconeri might repeat the pattern against AS Roma. Drawing this game will be a good result for the Turin giants, as they have to protect their place in the top four. They might open the gates for Bologna to take over, but this is a risk Massimiliano Allegri might be willing to take.

AS Roma will come under pressure heading into this clash as they are eager to get ahead of Atalanta and Lazio, the chasing pack for fifth place in the Champions League. Hence, while they might try to take advantage at home, Juventus have the ingredients and defensive quality to ensure this game ends in a draw.

The official Juventus website has provided us with the most interesting stats and facts leading to tonight’s encounter against Roma.

This will be the 90th time the Giallorossi host the Old Lady at the Stadio Olimpico for a Serie A clash. The two sides shared the spoils on 29 occasions.

Dusan Vlahovic and Paulo Dybala have directly contributed in more goals than any other Serie A player since the turn of the new year. Between goals and assists, they have each provided a dozen.

Daniele De Rossi’s squad features four players who previously donned the black-and-white jersey. The men in question are Dybala, Leonardo Spinazzola, Leandro Paredes and Dean Huijsen who is currently on loan from Juventus. ............

For his part, Wojciech Szczesny is one clean sheet away from reaching the 150 milestone in Europe’s Top Five league. The Pole will also make his 250th appearance for Juventus across all competitions. ............

Roma vs. Juventus match preview

Juventus v AS Roma - Serie A TIM

Over the next two weeks, Juventus will make two very important trips to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The first of those trips, could go a long way in finally wrapping up a Champions League spot, while the other will be Juve’s one and final chance to win some silverware before the 2023-24 season comes to an end and a summer of expected change arrives.

That second trip to Rome — and the trophy that potentially comes with it — is very much on the horizon. But that first jaunt back over to the Italian capital is very much right in front of Max Allegri’s squad.

They will actually face a Rome-based club this time around, as Juve open up the final four fixtures of the 2023-24 season against a very different kind of Roma squad than the one they saw a few days after Christmas. Four months ago, not only did Juventus’ form look a whole lot different then it does now, but the meeting between Allegri and Jose Mourinho pitted two of the most risk-averse managers in Serie A. But now, with Mourinho gone after he was sacked just a couple of weeks after the 1-0 loss in Turin, former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi has rolled in and brought a new kind of energy that has seen the Giallorossi go from outside of a European spot to now sitting in Serie A’s fifth and final Champions League spot. ............

Both Juventus and Roma are coming off disappointing results the last time out. Albeit, they came on very different kinds of stages considering where both teams are these days.

Juventus dropped points for an astonishing 11th time in their last 13 league fixtures last weekend against a shorthanded AC Milan side that featured a second-string defense. A Champions League place is something that should have been secured weeks ago, but because of this form over the last three months, they’ve left it to the last four games of the season. And with who Juve have to face over these final four games, it’s far from a certainty that they will wrap it all up this weekend and have the chance to focus on the Coppa Italia final when they face an already relegated Salernitana next weekend.

The hope, of course, is that Juve can take care of what they need to and get their Champions League spot secured come Sunday night.

The reality is that Juve are playing so poorly over these last three months — and it’s not like things are getting much better — that expecting them to beat good times is stretching it. ............

How different have things been? Let’s take a look!

Since Juventus’ draw with Empoli on Jan. 27 kicked off this tailspin, this is how it’s gone:

  • Juventus: 13 games played, 13 points earned
  • Roma: 13 games played, 27 points earned

One team has seen their run over these last three months save their season (even though Sunday’s game is very much a must-win when it comes to the Champions League). The other team has seen such a bright season go to absolute hell within the span of a couple of months, with just about everything feeling grateful for all those points from the first half of the 2023-24 campaign.

I don’t want to think what it would be like these final four games if Juventus hadn’t won as many games as they did up until the final weekend of January. Neither do you. So let’s just hope that Juve can get this Champions League spot wrapped up and be done with it all.

TEAM NEWS

  • It’s not exactly been the best birthday weekend for Kenan Yildiz, who turned 19 years old Friday. The young Turk will miss the trip to Rome after coming down with gastroenteritis, according to Allegri. Yildiz had hoped to recover in time, but could only train away from the group on his birthday and then didn’t train at all on Saturday, Allegri said.
  • Alex Sandro is the other injured player who will be forced to watch the Juve-Roma matchup back in Turin. Sandro, on the cusp of breaking Pavel Nedved’s record for most appearances by a foreign player at Juventus, suffered a muscle injury in training earlier this week.
  • The two suspended midfielders, Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba, are still suspended. However, Fagioli is now a little more than two weeks away from seeing his suspension come to an end on May 20. That would make him eligible to play in Juventus’ season finale against Monza. ............

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

Juventus Training Session

Things haven’t exactly been all that great for Weston McKennie lately. ............

Since he recorded back-to-back games with two assists in early March, McKennie has recorded just one more assist — in Juve’s win over Lazio in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal — and just hasn’t had the same kind of effectiveness that he’s had for the majority of his starts this season.

The easy reason to think things have happened in this way is because the dude is tired — which is very much valid at this point of the season. McKennie has played the second-most amount of minutes of any Juventus outfield player and the third most of anybody in bianconero if you throw Wojciech Szczesny into the mix. ............

But Juve need McKennie to be more like the player who was such a pleasant surprise to close this season. Especially when you’re going up a team like Roma who are going to play with an aggressive midfield that aren’t afraid to go right at you. It’s a big test for Juve, but also a big one for McKennie as his team is on the doorstep of Champions League qualification.

Official Juventus team to face Roma – Vlahovic and Chiesa start

roma.jpg

Juventus travel to the Stadio Olimpico to face Roma and this is the team that Max Allegri has selected for the game. ............

Afbeelding

Juventus must secure points today to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. While it’s highly likely that Juventus have already accumulated enough points to qualify for next season’s elite European competition, there is still a mathematical possibility that they could finish outside the top five.

Roma is also in the battle for a top-five spot, with Atalanta closely trailing them for that fifth position. A loss today for Roma could have a disastrous impact on their Champions League ambitions. ............

Juventus draw against Roma and wait for Champions League goes on

Roma-v-Juventus.jpg

Juventus played to a 1-1 draw against AS Roma this evening, keeping their hopes alive for qualification to next season’s Champions League.

Federico Chiesa signalled early on that it would be a challenging day for AS Roma with a long-range shot after just three minutes, although it flew wide. ............

Juve failed to heed those warnings, and Lukaku scored the opener after 15 minutes.

Lukaku again missed another chance, and it was all Roma in the opening 20 minutes. ............

But on the 30th-minute mark, Chiesa had his shot blocked, and Gleison Bremer equalised for Juve from the ensuing corner a minute later.

Ten minutes later, Manuel Locatelli failed to bury his header, becoming the latest player to miss a good chance.

Immediately after the break, Chiesa had the chance to put Juve ahead, but he missed from a great position. ............

In the 62nd minute, Chiesa should have done better as he bent a shot, but it wasn’t difficult for Mile Svilar to save.

Svilar saved again from Danilo, who brilliantly got away from his marker to attack a corner. ............

Kristensen could have scored the next goal after 69 minutes, but Wojciech Szczesny denied him with a stunning save.

After 76 minutes, Max Allegri decided to bring on Arkadiusz Milik and Moise Kean as he searched for the winning goal.

Four minutes later, Svilar pulled off another stunning save from Locatelli to keep the game level.

Carlos Alcaraz was the next Juventus player to join the match moments before Svilar brilliantly denied Kean. ............

Both teams tried to find the winner, but it never came as Juve dropped more points in the race for a Champions League place.

Juventus 1 - Roma 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Things somewhat surprisingly end with just two goals, with both goalkeepers making some highlight-reel kind of saves.

Roma 1-1 Juventus: Juve miss chance to close gap to second after draw with Roma

Under normal circumstances, Juventus recording a 1-1 draw against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico wouldn’t be the worst result in the world. It was a matchup that certainly had a little bit of everything, and the one that left plenty of people saying “if you were a neutral, then you would have really enjoyed this one!” or something along those lines. ............

An absolutely brutal start to Sunday’s trip to the Italian capital was salvaged by Bremer’s latest thunderous header to even the score before halftime. Somehow, even is how it stayed, with both teams having more than just a couple of chances to pull back in front. But thanks to the efforts of Wojciech Szczesny and Mile Svilar in each team’s goal, the two goalkeepers didn’t let the plethora of chances hit the back of the net, as the latest night where Juventus didn’t have the best of luck in front of goal came to the fore once again. ............

Ultimately, it means that Juventus have to wait yet another week to officially secure their place in next season’s Champions League. The thing is, with all of the dropped points over the last 14 Serie A fixtures, Juve trying to do it against an already-relegated Salernitana — and trying to do so at the Allianz Stadium, no less! — doesn’t seem as routine as you may think it is.

It’s just been that kind of second half of the season.

It’s just been a three months in which Juventus not winning has been the constant theme that has absolutely sucked all of the good vibes from the season.

And much in the same fashion as we saw last weekend against Milan, this was certainly a winnable game for Juventus — especially in the second half — but they just couldn’t get over that final hump to break the deadlock. Some of that had to do with Svilar doing pretty impressive things in goal. Part of it was Federico Chiesa’s brilliant solo effort needing just a little more bend on it so it goes into the side netting and not smashing off the far post. Part of it was simply not taking advantage of the chances that they did have, Svilar or no Svilar.

It all just ended up being the same kind of deal that we saw last weekend. Juventus could have won. Maybe they should have won with how they played in the second half. It was certainly there for the taking after a first half in which they were definitely not playing as well as Roma were. But that all-elusive second goal never arrived — and because of it this three-month stretch of barely winning anything no matter if it’s Serie A or Coppa Italia. ............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Hey, guess what? Juventus are one step closer to securing that Champions League spot. If you didn’t know, Max is here to tell you about it once again.
  • You know, the same thing you’ve been hearing all season. At this point, I was hoping it would be a thing of the past. But with three games remaining, we’re left to hear the same kind of quote about the same topic for at least another week. It’s exhausting.
  • There was a moment after the final whistle where Szczesny and Daniele De Rossi — who, remember, were teammates during Tek’s two-year spell in Rome — had what looked to be a brief conversation and then a laugh. Guessing DDR had a thing or two to say about the couple of big saves Szczesny made late in the game to keep things even. Oh to be a little gremlin sitting on Tek’s shoulder for that exchange. ............
  • Juventus attempted 161 passes in the first half.
  • Juventus completed 136 passes in the first half.
  • I don’t know about you guys, but it’s pretty hard to score goals when you barely have the ball!
  • Dusan Vlahovic touched the ball 15 times in the first half, And even with absolute scraps coming his way, he still had one of the best scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Could we be seeing the reemergence of Federico Chiesa in the pre-injury kind of form? He was great off the bench against Milan, and he followed that up with the kind of man of the match performance against Roma that leaves you wondering about where he’s heading form-wise with the Euros approaching. Some of the runs he made — and especially on the one that saw him nearly score — were those classic kind of Chiesa runs. That’s what gives you hope.
  • On the not-so-good scale: Juventus’ defending on Roma’s goal ... YEAH, NOT GOOD.
  • Like, seriously, think about what happened: Paulo Dybala spun Bremer around multiple times, Federico Gatti basically saw his “clearance” attempt go right to Romelu Lukaku and it’s not like the rest of the midfielders/defenders were all that great either. It was just bad all the way around.
  • A better moment from Bremer: his goal where he just hung in the air and got that much pace on the ball. It came off a brilliant assist from Chiesa, too — another one of those moments where he put Lorenzo Pellegrini on skates and put in a great cross with his weaker foot that Bremer thundered home. Good stuff, man.
  • Can you imagine what Moise Kean scoring his first goal of the season just before stoppage time would have been like? And a goal that clinched Juventus’ Champions League spot too? Oh man, the internet might have exploded. ............

Juventus Player Ratings vs Roma: Explosive Chiesa Shines Entertaining Draw

AS Roma v Juventus FC - Serie A TIM

Juventus (3-5-2)

Wojciech Szczesny – 6.5

The Juventus defenders were all over the place at times, which didn’t help the Pole’s cause. But still made some vital stops, including an injury-time save on Tammy Abraham.

Federico Gatti – 6

The Italian defender made a goal-line clearance to deny Bryan Cristante, but only to present the ball on silver plate to Lukaku. Found mild success on his attacking forays, but was dispossessed late in the match which almost gifted Abraham the winner.

Gleison Bremer – 6.5

The Brazilian defender was no match in the air for Lukaku, and was also outplayed by Paulo Dybala on the opener, but atoned himself by nodding home the winner with a nice header.

Danilo – 6

It was a mixed bag for the Juventus captain who struggled to contain Lukaku and Tommaso Baldanzi at times, but still made significant interceptions, including a goal-line clearance on Kristensen’s shot.

Timothy Weah – 5.5

 ............

Weston McKennie – 6

The American ran his socks off whether in midfield on the right flank, but his touch lacked quality.

Manuel Locatelli – 6

 ............

Adrien Rabiot – 6.5

The former PSG man produced one of his most inspirational displays in a long time. Trotted forward like a crazy horse with the ball at his feet, leaving his opponents in the dust. But still lacked the final product.

Andrea Cambiaso – 6

 ............

Dusan Vlahovic – 5.5

The Serbian could have put Juventus ahead early on but couldn’t hit the target. Worked hard for his team, but couldn’t inflict any damage.

Federico Chiesa – 7

The Euro 2020 star provided the assist for Bremer’s equalizer with a sublime cross with his left foot. He almost scored himself with the same foot after dribbling past Rasmus Kristensen but his ferocious strike was denied by the post. Simply the Bianconeri’s main source of inspiration.

Substitutes

Filip Kostic – 5.5

 ............

Moise Kean – 6

Almost scored the winner with a powerful header, but Svilar produced a solid save to extend the Italian’s agonizing goal drought.

Arkadiusz Milik – N/A

Carlos Alcaraz – N/A

Spoils shared between Juventus and Roma in tense battle at the Olimpico

With a Champions League spot at stake, Juve and Roma stood toe to toe but neither could come up with a winner.

AS Roma v Juventus FC - Serie A TIM

Sunday’s game between Juventus and Roma at the Stadio Olimpico had plenty of storyline behind it.

First and foremost, there was the fact that both teams were desperately trying to secure a place for themselves in next year’s Champions League. There was also the contrast between the two teams in the second half of the season. Roma had cast off an old coach whose tactics were stuck in generations past, and his replacement had changed the team’s tactics and led a flying run of form that had only recently started to end. Juve, on the other hand, had kept a similar coach in place even after an incredible collapse that he seemed completely unable to arrest — one that was still ongoing as of this writing. There was also the side plot of two ex-Juve men in Roma’s starting lineup, looking to get a jab in on their old club.

All those stories showed up to a degree, but in the end it was the game itself that ended up being the main talking point in the end. ............

With the end of the season coming closer and closer and Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, the Bianconeri and Giallorossi traded blows like a pair of prize fighters in the middle of the ring. By the middle of the second half they were treating viewers to a thrilling contest that, for the neutral, was quite entertaining, and for the partisan was liable to put you on beta blockers.

In the end, thanks to some epic goalkeeping and brilliant goal-line clearances, neither side was able to land the knockout blow that they needed. The 1-1 draw at the final whistle was a better result for Juve than Roma, but still short of what either team wanted to clinch their spot in the top five. ............

The game’s opening salvos came from Juve. Three minutes in Chiesa took a pass from Cambiaso, cut inside, and unleashed a shot for the far post that flew over, but not by that much. Four minutes later Bremer pressed Dybala off the ball deep in the Roma half. The ball was fed into Chiesa, who dribbled into the box and squared it for Vlahovic, who had to backtrack to pick it up but still had good shooting position, but he yanked it just wide.

Of course, seeing this early sign of life, Allegri proceeded to do how Allegri do, and Juve began to drop back into their own half. ............

Roma’s long spell of possession led Kristensen to send Baldanzi to the byline. Baldanzi — whose equalizer against Juve while he was still at Empoli was perhaps the trigger for this whole mess — pulled the ball back to Dybala, who laid it back further still to Cristante. The midfielder’s shot actually beat Szczesny, but Gatti was right there to touch it away from the line. While this technically counted as a goal line clearance for some stat sites, his touch redirected the ball straight to Lukaku, who made no mistake burying the rebound. ............

But Juve had some fight in them, and they had a Federico Chiesa who, as it would turn out, was absolutely on fire.

Chiesa lit the fuse when Juve recycled a corner kick back to him. He put Pellegrini on his backside with a quick cut and sent in a gorgeous cross, putting it on a dime for Bremer, who outjumped two defenders and hit a powerful header that went past Svilar almost before he could react to tie the score. ............

AS Roma v Juventus FC - Serie A TIM

Juve had the better of things through the opening phases of the first half. Things changed right around the hour mark, when Weah took out Paredes while trying to get a pass off after a heavy touch. Practically every Roma player surrounded referee Andrea Colombo begging him to show Weah, who had been booked in the game’s first 10 minutes, a second yellow card. Colombo, who overall had a wretched night, made the right call in this instance and refused to go to his pocket, and Allegri immediately put Filip Kostic onto the field to keep Weah from actually getting that second yellow. ............

The game’s final phases brought the goalkeepers to the fore. In the 79th minute, Locatelli ran on to a loose defensive header and bounced it towards the goal. It was headed just under the crossbar before Svilar adjusted and tipped it over the bar. At the very end of normal time the Belgian did it again, somehow getting a hand up after Moise Kean put a perfect header on a Kostic corner kick.

Roma, who lead the league in goals after the 75-minute mark, nearly added to that total deep into stoppage time, when a bad giveaway by Gatti was moved downfield and put into the channel perfectly for Tammy Abraham, who had a clear shooting lane but couldn’t get the ball past an onrushing Szczesny, who made himself big and blocked the ball with his legs.

AS Roma v Juventus - Serie A TIM

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6.5. A couple of his punches could’ve been better, and he was beaten a couple times only to be bailed out by blocks, but his huge stoppage time save kept the game level and at least got Juve one point.

FEDERICO GATTI - 5. His weak clearance gifted Lukaku Roma’s goal, and he made a complete brain fart at the end that could’ve given a second gift of a winner. He needs to eliminate the mental errors like that.

BREMER - 7. That towering header was exceptional, the perfect shot that gave the keeper zero shot to react. Kept Lukaku relatively quiet, and was again a force at the back, reading the game well and clearing the ball six times, as well as getting in that crucial block on Pellegrini’s shot.

DANILO - 7. His header off the line may have saved the game for Juve, and he was a constant pressence in defense all night long. He finished the day with three tackles and eight clearances and also contributed a pair of key passes at the other end.

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5.  ............

WESTON McKENNIE - 6.  ............

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5. Only completed 82.1 percent of his passes, which wasn’t good enough for how the game began to develop. He did almost give Juve the win when he was denied by Svilar. I’ve seen people say he should’ve caught the ball more cleanly on that shot, but I wonder if he hadn’t hit it into the ground if it would have hit the target at all.

ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5.  ............

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6.  ............

FEDERICO CHIESA - 7.5. The best player on the pitch by a good margin. He was dangerous whenever he had the ball, and no one in Roma’s defense could do anything about it. The cross he put in for Bremer’s goal looked as though he’d picked out an individual pore on his head, and the shot that hit the post would have been one of the goals of the season in the entire league had it gone in. It begs the question: why was he removed from the game?

AS Roma v Juventus - Serie A TIM

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5. Missed his best chance early and didn’t get a whole ton of service the rest of the night. He only touched the ball 15 times in the first half, and 23 times on the whole in 75 minutes. That’s not enough service to your top striker.

SUBS

FILIP KOSTIC - 5.5.  ............

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5.  ............

MOISE KEAN - 5.5. Only seven touches, but completing a third of your passes ain’t a great look. What was a good look was that last-minute header, which would’ve been a goal had Svilar pulled out a save that was not normal.

CARLOS ALCARAZ - NR.  ............

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Why was Federico Chiesa taken out of the game?

Up until that point, there had been little to complain about Allegri’s night. He had gotten the team a little too deep in the lead-up to Lukaku’s goal, but other than that it was a pretty good match. Having Cambiaso on the left helped unlock Chiesa, who combines with him far better than Filip Kostic, who generally takes up the same spaces that Chiesa wants to launch his attacks from. Cambiaso will overlap and underlap with Chiesa and move the defense around, giving him more room to operate.

And operate Chiesa did. He was on fire, and Roma simply didn’t have a counter for him. He’d humiliated Kristensen a couple of times, and guys like Llorente didn’t fare much better.

And then he was pulled.

The way the game was playing out, the only valid justification for that decision is if Chiesa was either hurting or gassed and asked to come out. There was no apparent sign that that was the case. Maybe — maybe — you could make the case that Allegri was trying to adjust to the fact Kostic was in the game and that he and Chiesa don’t work well together. But even then, you’re removing your only true creative player and a guy that — I cannot stress this enough — was absolutely on fire to put a pair of prima punti onto the field, and Kostic did not put nearly enough crosses into the box to justify that move in any case.

I have a feeling that had Chiesa stayed on the field, Juventus would have taken the lead at some point. As it was, it took two extraordinary saves from Svilar to keep Juve out and the game level. In the state of grace Chiesa was in tonight, I don’t think Svilar would’ve been able to make enough saves to do that. In taking him off, Allegri may have managed himself out of three points on the night.

LOOKING AHEAD

Juve will play Salernitana next weekend at a time still to be determined. After that, they head back to Rome to face Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final, then end the season with an away date against Bologna and a home finale against Monza.

How can Juventus secure Champions League qualification following Roma draw

Champions League final in U.S. 'possible' in future, says UEFA president | Reuters

Despite settling for a draw against Roma, Juventus are now ever closer to achieving Champions League qualification.

The Bianconeri currently sit third in the Serie A standings with 66 points. Last night’s result allowed them to preserve their six-point gap over the Giallorossi who currently lie in 5th place.

Bologna reside between the two with 64 points. The status quo was preserved on this front, as the Emilians also settled for a goalless draw against Torino on Friday.

But with Serie A earning an extra spot for next season’s Champions League edition, all three clubs are currently sitting in the UCL zone.

However, Atalanta are preparing to launch an onslaught and take advantage of the recent results to climb their way up the ranks. ............

The Bianconeri can finish the job with a win over Salernitana next Sunday at the Allianz Stadium.

But even if Max Allegri’s men fail to beat the Granata, they can still book their UCL ticket depending on the outcome of the direct clash between Atalanta and Roma which will be played on the same day.

If the Orobici were to beat Daniele De Rossi’s side, it would be enough for the Old Lady to qualify regardless of the result against Salernitana, thanks to their superior head-to-head record against Roma.

On the other hand, Juventus would need a single point against Salernitana to qualify if Atalanta and Roma end their match in a draw.

Juve have to clinch a UCL spot vs. Salernitana ... RIGHT?!

The worst team in Serie A is coming to Turin this weekend, with Juventus just one win away from securing their spot in the Champions League for next season

AS Roma v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Weeks and weeks have gone by with dropped points galore. The second half of the season for Juventus has ended up being quite the disaster for a number of reasons. But the biggest is the simple fact that a campaign that looked like it was going to be smooth sailing back into the Champions League has been anything but that over the last 3 12 months.

With three games to go, Juve still hasn’t secured that Champions League spot.

But there could be some good news coming their way this weekend. And that’s simply because of who Juventus are playing this weekend.

The only team that has already received their ticket to Serie B for next season rolls into Turin, with Juventus hosting last-place and already relegated Salernitana. With a win over the 20th-place side in Serie A that has a Seahorse in its club crest, Juve will get that incredibly elusive spot in the Champions League for next season. It’s something that should have been done weeks ago, but with just 14 points in their last 14 games, it’s now been delayed and delayed and delayed some more. ............

Pavan wants Juventus to try a new attacking lineup against Salernitana

Perché un tridente Chiesa-Vlahovic-Yildiz alla Juventus non è possibile (con Allegri) | Goal.com Italia

Massimo Pavan expects a reaction from Juventus when they face bottom-of-the-table Salernitana this weekend.

Juve is eager to seal qualification for the Champions League as soon as possible as they continue to struggle to win games.

Salernitana is no match for Juve, even though the Bianconeri are struggling, and it is one of those fixtures that Juve is expected to win by a large margin. ............

But Pavan expects a change in their play and wants to see a front three of Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic, and Kenan Yildiz in the game.

He said:

“Against Salernitana, I expect something new, that is to say that Chiesa, Vlahovic and Yildiz play from the start to try to see something new, then it may or may not work, but we have to try since we have to win at any cost”. ............

Juventus vs Salernitana: Preview

Juventus have an opportunity to seal Champions League qualification for 2024/25 if they can defeat bottom-placed Salernitana on Serie A Matchday 36.

Watch Serie A Season 2023 Episode 75: Juventus Salernitana, 49% OFF

Juventus will host Salernitana at the Allianz Stadium on Serie A Matchday 36 in what should be one of the most one-sided matches on paper.

The Bianconeri are third with 66 points, but they have draw their last four matches in Serie A, and they are struggling to score goals, having found the back of the net on just three occasions in that period. Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic has scored 16 goals this season, and he is second only to Lautaro Martinez from Inter, but he has scored just once in the last seven games. ............

Despite the underwhelming form of Juventus, this match is a great opportunity for La Vecchia Signora to win and seal their place in the Champions League for next season. A depleted Salernitana earning a least a point from this match would be nothing short of a miracle.

Juventus vs Salernitana: Predicted line-ups

Juventus will miss Timothy Weah due to suspension whereas DaniloAlex Sandro, and Kenan Yildiz have to pass fitness tests prior to the match. Versatile wing-back Andrea Cambiaso is one yellow card away from serving a ban.

The Bianconeri are expected to start in the 3-5-2 formation as usual albeit with Daniele Rugani starting in defence while Cambiaso and Filip Kostic should operate as the wing-backs. Despite his lack of goals lately, Vlahovic should start in attack ahead of Arkadiusz Milik and play beside Federico Chiesa............

Juventus predicted XI vs Salernitana (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Rugani; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Salernitana predicted XI vs Juventus (3-4-3): Fiorillo; Pierozzi, Fazio, Pirola; Sambia, Coulibaly, Basic, Sfait; Tchaouna, Vignato, Ikwuemesi

Juventus vs Salernitana: When does the Serie A fixture start?

Kick-off in the Serie A Matchday 36 fixture of Juventus vs Salernitana is set for 18:00 CEST, local time in Italy, on Sunday, May 12.

For viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the game will start at 17:00 BST. That is 12:00 ET / 09:00 PT in the United States. ............

Preview: Juventus vs. Salernitana - prediction, team news, lineups

Juventus vs Salernitana Prediction - Serie A - 12/05/2024

Warming up for next week's Coppa Italia final, Juventus will welcome Serie A's bottom side Salernitana to Turin on Sunday.

Victory would seal Champions League qualification for the Bianconeri, but four straight draws have left them glancing over their shoulder at several teams behind them.

Match preview

After a rare season without continental competition, due to a one-year ban imposed by UEFA, Juventus can book their return to Europe's top table by beating Serie B-bound Salernitana, securing the club's 24th involvement in the Champions League.

However, a side that once contested top spot with Inter Milan has been stumbling towards the tape for several weeks now - with just two wins to show from their last 14 league fixtures, they are hanging on to third place by a two-point margin.

In 2024, only Heidenheim have drawn more matches than Juve throughout Europe's top five leagues, while only Frosinone and Sunday's visitors have won fewer times in Italy's top flight.

Again unable to finish off their opponents, Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Roma last time out, as Brazilian centre-back Bremer scored his 13th headed goal in Serie A to secure a point at Stadio Olimpico.

A return to Rome awaits next Wednesday, when Max Allegri's men will contest the Coppa Italia final, which they recently reached by eliminating Lazio - for the second time in four seasons, Atalanta BC are their opponents in the decider.

First, though, the Bianconeri must take care of business by recording a third win on the spin over Salernitana; having lost just once in nine previous top-flight meetings with the Campanian club, their frustrated fans will accept nothing less. ............

Team News

Not expected to indulge in much rotation ahead of the cup final - and against modest opposition - Juventus boss Max Allegri will be without three defenders due to injury, while Timothy Weah is sidelined by suspension.

Brazilian duo Danilo (thigh) and Alex Sandro (calf) are both unavailable, as is Mattia De Sciglio (thigh), but young striker Kenan Yildiz hopes to recover from an illness.

With the latter's involvement likely to be limited, Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic are set to feature up front; Vlahovic has been directly involved in no fewer than nine goals - six of his own and three assists - from five previous meetings with Salernitana. ............

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Rugani; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic

Salernitana possible starting lineup:
Fiorillo; Pierozzi, Fazio, Pirola; Sambia, Coulibaly, Basic, Zanoli; Vignato, Tchaouna; Ikwuemesi

We say: Juventus 2-0 Salernitana

Juve will end their winless run at the expense of a hapless Salernitana side that could finish the season with just 15 points: the hosts will try to get victory wrapped up as early as possible, before conserving some energy for next week's cup final.

Juventus vs. Salernitana match preview

Will Sunday be the day when Juventus finally wrap up their spot in next season’s Champions League? We sure as hell hope so!

Juventus vs Salernitana. Voorbeschouwing en Voorspelling - azscore.com

I know it’s incredibly difficult to do what I am about to ask, but just go ahead and forget Juventus’ form over the last 3 12 months for a minute or two. Once you do that, I want you to consider this scenario and then let me know what you think about it:

If Juventus are in need of one win and one win only that will get them, officially, into the Champions League next season, who would you prefer them to line up against in Serie A?

Would you prefer somebody that’s actually good like a surging Atalanta side or Thiago Motta’s Bologna that is now ahead of Juventus in the standings?

ORRRRRR ... would you prefer the last place team in the league, Salernitana? You know, the team — with three games to go in the 2023-24 season — that already has already been relegated and has recorded a worse goal differential than Sampdoria, who finished at the bottom of the league table a year ago.

I think I know which direction I would go. I’m guessing you would do the same. ............

It doesn’t matter if Salernitana has allowed a league-high 75 goals this season. It doesn’t matter if they haven’t won a game in the 2024 calendar year. (And you thought Juve was having a bad 2024!) It’s just one of those stretches where you can’t get your expectations up off the floor no matter who Juventus are facing on a certain day.

But if Juventus can’t get one win against this very, very bad Salernitana squad to clinch a spot in the Champions League, then I don’t even know what to think about this season. Juve may be playing like a relegation-threatened side over the last three months, but Salernitana has been even worse. Let’s just hope that pays off when Juve need just one more stinkin’ win.

TEAM NEWS

  • Kenan Yildiz is still working his way back from gastroenteritis, which caused him to miss the draw with Roma and put a major damper on his 19th birthday weekend. Allegri said Yildiz is still not 100% and his status still seems to be up in the air as to whether he will be available to face Salernitana.
  • Another player who Allegri said isn’t 100%? Federico Chiesa, who could very well get a bit of a rest with the Coppa Italia final set for next Wednesday. Allegri said Chiesa has been dealing with some sort of virus in recent days.
  • Both Yildiz and Chiea’s status will be decided upon Sunday morning, according to Allegri.
  • Due to injuries to Danilo and Alex Sandro, Allegri said that January signing Tiago Djalo could make his Juventus debut against Salernitana. It would be his first game action in 15 months following the serious knee injury he suffered with Lille in March 2023.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

Arek Milik is not Federico Chiesa. That is very obvious. They are two different kinds of forward, and that’s on top of the fact that one of them is actually a winger and therefore being played in a less-than desirable position for the better part of the last two years since returning from tearing his ACL.

But Milik is, as we’ve come to know, a player that Allegri likes to turn to in moments like this one. That’s especially true because Yildiz is still struggling to get back to 100% percent thanks to his extended battle with gastroenteritis. (Did you know that Yildiz has officially played more league minutes than Milik this season? I didn’t realize that until I looked it up!).

Sure, if Chiesa can’t go then Yildiz would be the go-to option. The thing is, he’s also not completely healthy, so the options are down to either Milik or Moise Kean to take Chiea’s spot if need be. And I don’t know about you guys, but I would rather have Milik start as compared to a completely out-of-form Kean who has now not scored in over a year. (His last goal was April 1, 2023, against Hellas Verona. That’s 13 months ago!).

You just get the feeling that if Chiesa (or even Dusan Vlahovic) gets a rest against Salernitana, the first person Allegri is going to turn to is Milik. And even though he’s not had a great season, he’s shown capable of.

Juventus vs Salernitana: Preview and Prediction

Juventus are angling for the win that will confirm their UEFA Champions League qualification as they face an already-relegated Salernitana side.

Kijk Juventus - Salernitana Live Stream | DAZN BE

There are strong rumours linking Massimiliano Allegri with an exit after how the season has panned out, but the Italian tactician could still bow out with silverware. Juventus will be in the Coppa Italia Final next week, but before that, they can confirm their qualification for next season’s Champions League when they host Salernitana on Sunday.

All they need is a win on Sunday over bottom-placed Salernitana, although Juventus have huffed and puffed and managed draws over the last four games. Once seen as an able challenger to Inter Milan for the Serie A title, the dramatic fall from grace in that particular race has raised many questions about their future.

With a win over Salernitana, Juventus will book their place in the premier European competition, as they are still looking over their shoulders with a few teams still angling for their place on the table. The quest for finishing second could still be mildly on, especially if AC Milan continue to drop points in their remaining games. ............

Team News & Tactics

Juventus

Juventus are missing a few key personnel, with Alex Sandro, Kenan Yildiz, and Mattia De Sciglio out of action ahead of the clash on Sunday. Massimiliano Allegri will also miss key defender Danilo for this contest, while Timothy Weah is suspended.

Daniele Rugani should comfortably replace Danilo on the left side of the back three, with Gleison Bremer and Federico Gatti holding on to their spots. Andrea Cambiaso and Filip Kostic are best placed for the wing-back roles, meaning Allegri will make only that one alteration at the back with Danilo.

Manuel Locatelli will continue to sit at the base of this midfield, with Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie on either side of the Italian. Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic will continue to lead the line, with the latter’s goal helping Juventus win in the reverse fixture against Salernitana.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Rugani; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa

RwLXVGa0TvPmW2hhTqWH.png

Salernitana

 ............

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Costil; Pierozzi, Fazio, Pirola; Sambia, Coulibaly, Basic, Sfait; Vignato, Tchaouna; Ikwuemesi

RHh1plL8WOIZ0FNhkh1s.png

Key Stats

  • Juventus have drawn their last four matches in Serie A.
  • Juventus scored at least two goals in all of their last six matches against Salernitana.
  • A win would secure Champions League qualification for Juventus.
  • Salernitana have failed to win their last 17 matches in Serie A.
  • Salernitana are already relegated from Serie A.

Player to Watch

Dusan Vlahovic

The striker has many things to prove at Juventus, and the summer window may see a change in the scenario for both the club and the player. The Serb has been prolific this season, but not the standards many have come to expect from him, as the bar has been set high by the likes of Lautaro Martinez.

The striker still has a slight chance to improve his goalscoring numbers with three games left, although there are doubts about whether he can catch Martinez, who has 24. However, a top draw performance against already relegated Salernitana could do his numbers some good and could at least hope to finish very close to the Argentine.

Prediction

Juventus 2-0 Salernitana

Salernitana only have pride to play for in the remaining fixtures of the Serie A season, and while they will play with the handbrakes off, they will find it challenging going against the Turin giants.

Juventus will likely look to break away with a good lead in this game, with the likes of Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic likely to have a good outing to get their numbers up. However, their pragmatic style may continue here, meaning fans may not see goals galore, with Juventus expected to keep a clean sheet in this win.

Allegri hints at a debut for Tiago Djalo against Salernitana

mhxr4ommdcgcwvpheztq.jpg

Max Allegri has hinted that he could give some minutes to Tiago Djalo when Juventus faces Salernitana this weekend.

The men in black and white will face the Salerno side in one of their most crucial fixtures between now and the end of the season. ............

However, Djalo has still not made his debut for the club as Juventus tries its best to secure qualification for the next Champions League as soon as possible.

With just four defenders available to him this weekend, Allegri has hinted that the Portuguese defender might get some playing time.

He said:

“At the moment, the most important is Salernitana. Then the others fall. Djalò is better. He could also play. With Danilo and Alex Sandro out, I have 4 defenders, 3 will play. I’ll have to evaluate tomorrow.” ............

Juventus Secure Champions League Berth But Nobody Is Impressed

Juventus v US Salernitana - Serie A TIM

Juventus mathematically secured a place in the UEFA Champions League for next season, but once again left everyone – including their own supporters – unimpressed at what they had witnessed.

Playing at home against a Salernitana side who sat rock bottom of Serie A, the Bianconeri should have been able to deliver a comfortable result, particularly given the subpar nature of the visitors.

Indeed, the side from Salerno – who had seen their relegation to Serie B confirmed two weeks earlier – had gone 17 games without a win, and had recorded just two victories across the entire campaign.

Yet despite having not won a game since December 30, they jumped out to a 1-0 lead after just 27 minutes of action in Turin and even though Juve would grab a 91st minute equaliser, it was not a convincing result in any way. ............

Atalanta’s win over AS Roma later on Sunday means that the capital club now cannot catch Juve in the race for Champions League places, but the Italian press were distinctly unimpressed by the manner in which the Old Lady has qualified for UEFA’s elite competition. ............

Juventus sweating over Kenan Yildiz condition – Danilo & Sandro towards recovery

Yildiz4.jpg

Juventus teenager Kenan Yildiz sustained an injury scare leaving his availability for the Coppa Italia final in great doubt.

The squad resumed training straight away on Monday despite playing on Sunday evening against Salernitana in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. ............

However, Yildiz had to skip Monday’s training session altogether due to a shoulder knock that he received during yesterday’s match.

The 18-year-old’s condition will be assessed tomorrow, as the club hopes that he manages to shake it off in time ahead of the trip to Rome.

On the other hand, there are positive updates concerning the conditions of club captain Danilo and his compatriot Alex Sandro. ............

On another note, Juventus will be without Manuel Locatelli who will miss the clash due to a yellow-card suspension.

Preview: Atalanta BC vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

Atalanta vs Juventus Predicted lineup, betting tips, odds, injury news, H2H, telecast

Contesting the Coppa Italia final for the second time in four years, Atalanta BC and Juventus meet at Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Two members of Serie A's top six convene in the capital, where La Dea will seek a first major trophy since the 1960s and Juve aim to get back in the winners' circle after a rare lean spell.

Match preview

Approaching the climax of what could be an historic season at the Bergamo club, Atalanta are set to make their first appearance in the Coppa Italia final since losing to Juventus three years ago, when Federico Chiesa's second-half strike secured a 2-1 win for the Bianconeri.

To date, the Nerazzurri's sole triumph in Italy's national cup came back in 1963, while they have lost four times in the final, with current coach Gian Piero Gasperini being in charge for both of the last two. ............

While the weight of history bears down on La Dea's shoulders, Juventus are also under pressure to return home with the cup: by their high standards, they are enduring an unacceptable trophy drought, having last lifted silverware when pipping Atalanta in 2021.

Beaten by old foes Inter Milan one year later, the Bianconeri have been off the pace in Serie A for some time now, and this season's attempt at taking part in the Scudetto race simply came apart at the seams.

Juve may have qualified for the Champions League after a one-year absence - with their place sealed on Sunday, by Atalanta's win over Roma - but a once-promising campaign is now in danger of descending into mediocrity.

Having drawn each of their last five matches - most recently, being held at home by already-relegated Salernitana - Max Allegri's men are now fourth in the standings and some 25 points adrift of irrepressible Inter. ............

Team News

Though he starred in Atalanta's semi-final second-leg triumph over Fiorentina, in-form striker Gianluca Scamacca also picked up a booking that means he must miss a final in his home city due to suspension. ............

Juventus have Brazilian duo Danilo and Alex Sandro available, after both returned to training on Monday; Timothy Weah is back from a one-match ban, and Federico Chiesa has recovered from an illness that saw him benched against Salernitana.

Turkish teenager Kenan Yildiz also hopes to overcome a shoulder problem, but Mattia De Sciglio misses out through injury and midfield regular Manuel Locatelli is suspended.

As Mattia Perin is Juve's cup goalkeeper, first-choice Wojciech Szczesny is set to step aside for the final.

Atalanta BC possible starting lineup:
Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Djimsiti; Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners, Lookman; De Ketelaere

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Perin; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Miretti, Rabiot, Kostic; Chiesa, Vlahovic

We say: Atalanta BC 2-1 Juventus (after extra time)

After over 60 years of waiting, Atalanta can celebrate Coppa Italia success again, as they are the more accomplished side and take some stellar form with them into Wednesday's final.

Juventus have a reputation for producing the goods when it matters, but this time they may come up short on the big stage, having lost all momentum since suffering Derby d'Italia defeat in February.

Allegri & Gasperini prepare for their 29th battle – Who has the upper hand?

Allegri e Gasperini, attenti a questi due

Max Allegri and Gian Piero Gasperini will be sitting in opposite dugouts for the 29th time when Juventus and Atalanta lock horns in the Coppa Italia final.

The big showdown will take place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Wednesday night.

Both managers will be hungry for silverware. Allegri has yet to lift a trophy since his return to Turin in 2021, while Gasperini is still seeking his first medal with La Dea. ............

Overall, the Bianconeri boss has the upper hand thanks to 12 victories over his colleague. Ten meetings ended in draws, while the Atalanta coach prevailed on six occasions.

However, their most recent battles have been much more balanced. Since Allegri’s return to Juventus, each man has registered an away victory while four matches ended in draws. ............

Nevertheless, the Atalanta coach avenged himself by eliminating Allegri from the Coppa Italia in 2019 with a 3-0 victory that ended Juve’s four-year dominance over the competition.

That being said, tomorrow’s clash could go down in history as the most significant chapter in this old rivalry.

Atalanta vs Juventus: Preview and Prediction

Atalanta and Juventus will meet in this season’s edition of the Coppa Italia final, with both sides eager to win silverware this season.

Atalanta vs Juventus Prediction and Betting Tips

Atalanta could yet have an historic end to their current season, with probably two trophies to show for their cause, the first of which will see them clash with Juventus. Gian Piero Gasperini has one foot in the Coppa Italia final and the other in the Europa League Final, as they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the latter.

In the Coppa Italia showdown, Atalanta meet Juventus, and with a win, the manager can provide the squad with a boost of confidence ahead of the big European night that awaits them later in the month. La Dea also took a big step towards automatic Champions League qualification, with a stellar win over top-five rivals Roma at the weekend.

It is an essential game against Juventus in the Coppa Italia final. Atalanta lost against the same opposition in this fixture three years ago. While they will want revenge, Gasperini will be more concerned about actually winning the tie, as Atalanta have lost in four separate finals since winning the trophy back in 1963.

Juventus will have wanted to enter such a crucial game, which also happens to be their last chance to win a trophy this season in better form. The Bianconeri have struggled for relevance throughout 2024 and continued that trend when they only managed a draw with already-relegated Salernitana.

The dropped points have cast doubt on their credentials to hold on to their third-place spot, with Bologna now overtaking them there. Fellow Coppa Italian finalists Atalanta are not too far away from catching them in fourth place, as Juvetus’s season threatens to end in absolute misery. ............

Team News & Tactics

Atalanta

Probable Lineup (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Djimsiti; Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners, Lookman; De Ketelaere

Juventus

The availability of critical defenders Danilo and Alex Sandro boosted Massimiliano Allegri’s squad. However, only the former might start this game, with the other likely to sit on the bench.

Federico Gatti and Gleison Bremer will start alongside Danilo in the Bianconeri’s back three. Juventus will also have Timothy Weah available after the wing-back served a one-game suspension in the weekend’s draw against Salernitana.

The one significant change will be the selection of Mattia Perin for the goal, with Allegri having been consistent in choosing him in cup games this season, as Wojciech Szczesny will have to step aside for a bit. Other than that, Juventus do not have many problems and could even include young attacker Kenan Yildiz in their squad if he recovers from a shoulder problem.

Allegri will name a familiar side, with Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic leading the line for Juventus against Atalanta in the final.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Perin; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa

Key Stats

  • Atalanta has lost four Coppa Italia Finals since winning the competition in 1963.
  • Atalanta are unbeaten in their last six games across all competitions.
  • Juventus have only three victories in their last 17 games across all competitions.
  • Juventus will lift the Coppa Italia for the 15 time should they overcome Atalanta. ............

Prediction

Atalanta 2-1 Juventus

Three wins in their last 17 games showcase how badly Juventus have fallen off their perch this season. This is a team that was firmly in the Serie A title chase at the start of the year. Massimiliano Allegri will now be in a desperate mood to win the Coppa Italia. But the Juventus manager must have hoped for another opponent than the in-form Atalanta.

The Bergamo outfit have proven their worth on all fronts, and they will now want to use this momentum to get their hands on the Coppa Italia trophy. This is a chance Gian Piero Gasperini will want to take advantage of, as Atalanta have the form and confidence to down even a team like Juventus, something they might do.

COPPA ITALIA FINAL PREVIEW | ATALANTA V JUVENTUS

Atalanta vs Juventus Prediction and Betting Tips

On Wednesday a new Coppa Italia champion will be crowned, and next season that team will wear the ‘Coccarda’ winner’s patch, as Serie A giants Juventus take on Atalanta.

Inter won the trophy last year, defeating Fiorentina thanks to a Lautaro Martínez double in the final. This season they may have won the league, but Italy’s domestic final returns with two new competitors: Atalanta and Juventus.

It’s fair to say that the form of both teams couldn’t be more different coming into this clash. Juventus are on a dismal run and have just three wins from 17 games in all competitions. Atalanta on the other hand have six wins from their last seven games, their only draw in that period coming away to Marseille of course; part of an aggregate victory that has sent them to a first ever European Cup final in Dublin this month.

Atalanta beat Roma 2-1 at home on Sunday night, which gave them a firm grip on Champions League qualification, but it also confirmed that Juventus would play in Europe’s premier competition next season.

Despite that, Juventus drew at home to relegated Salernitana on the same day. Their fanbase is fuming and their coach Massimiliano Allegri looks like he will be off in the summer. Thiago Motta of Bologna has been tipped to replace him, but Bologna will be in next season’s UCL too, so perhaps he would be mad to jump onto what seems like a sinking ship.

Juventus are still Juventus though, and we are talking about a football match of 90 minutes. Atalanta have won the national trophy once before in 1963, but Juventus are record winners having won it 14 times, and five times in the last nine years. ............

Juventus defeated Atalanta in the 2021 Coppa Italia final too. 2-1 was the final score. Juventus were a better side back then, and the Atalanta team has almost completely changed too, but in a cup final with the nation watching, some clubs might always feel more comfortable than others. ............

If Atalanta are to unleash a historical giant killing on a team, who at the moment they certainly have the beating of, then perhaps there will never be a better opportunity than now. La Dea are dancing in dreamland as Juventus find themselves stuck in the mud.

Atalanta will be wary of Juventus’ quality though, even if it has been dormant for a while. The Old lady will be more than aware of how good Atalanta have been this season themselves. The sides already drew twice against each other in the league, so don’t expect there to be much between them in this cup final. However Atalanta are too good to not create chances against this Juve team, enough to win the game, let’s see if they can take them.

Preview: Atalanta vs Juventus – Team News, Lineups & Prediction

Atalanta vs Juventus Prediction - Coppa Italia - 15/05/2024

Wednesday is the day of reckoning in the Coppa Italia as Atalanta and Juventus look horns in the 2023/24 final at the Stadio Olimpico. A piece of history beckons for both teams who head to the capital to carve their names out in Italian football’s folklore.

Atalanta’s fifth game in a fortnight comes amidst a purple patch. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side will contest Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final this time next week after overcoming Marseille in the semi-finals. ............

Left in pole position to capture a berth in next season’s Champions League group stages, Atalanta turn to Coppa Italia duties, seeking their first title since 1962/63.

Standing in their way is none other than record-time champions Juventus. The 14-time winners squeezed past Lazio in the semi-finals to earn a chance to lift their first piece of silverware since 2021. However, the atmosphere around the Turin camp is anything but healthy.

Adrien Rabiot’s stoppage-time equalizer in last weekend’s 1-1 home draw against an already relegated Salernitana didn’t save Juventus from another round of whistles from the home fans.

As the Bianconeri faithful demand Massimiliano Allegri’s head on a platter, not even a record-extending 15th Coppa Italia crown would guarantee the Italian a stay beyond the summer. Losing this game, on the other hand, would almost certainly be the detriment of the ex-Milan coach.

Match Preview

Atalanta

What most Atalanta fans thought they wouldn’t testify to in their lifetime could soon become a reality. Two grand finals in seven days could shape the history of this proud Bergamo club and their tactical genius, Gasperini. ............

Juventus

In contrast to Atalanta’s superb sequence, Juventus can’t catch a break. As aforementioned, Allegri’s men failed to beat one of the worst teams in recent Serie A history. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

To better understand the depth of the crisis, you must look at Juventus’ recent points tally. They’ve only claimed 15 across the last 15 Serie A rounds, with their five latest league outings ending all square.

As if that’s not devastating enough, Juventus only netted four goals across those five matches. However, they boast unparalleled experience in high-stakes showdowns.

It’s their 22nd appearance in the Coppa Italia final, and if anyone knows how to win a title, it’s Juventus. The catch is that they must do it on hostile turf, which has lately been their Achilles heel.

Not since January have Juventus won a competitive fixture on the road. In fact, they’re winless on their last eight domestic travels (D4, L4).

Team News

De Ketelaere’s stunning performance against Roma should settle Gasperini’s nerves after losing Gianluca Scamacca for this contest due to suspension. Other than the Italian striker, Atalanta will be without Emil Holm, Sead Kolasinac, and Rafael Toloi.

As for Juventus, Mattia De Sciglio and Kenan Yildiz are the only definite absentees. Alex Sandro and Danilo returned to training on Monday and could make the squad on Wednesday, though neither should feature in Allegri’s starting XI.

Atalanta vs Juventus Potential Lineups

Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Marco Carnesecchi; Giorgio Scalvini, Isak Hien, Berat Djimsiti; Davide Zappacosta, Ederson, Marten de Roon, Matteo Ruggeri; Teun Koopmeiners, Ademola Lookman; Charles De Ketelaere.

Juventus (3-5-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Federico Gatti, Gleison Bremer, Daniele Rugani; Andrea Cambiaso, Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot, Filip Kostic; Federico Chiesa, Dusan Vlahovic.

Atalanta vs Juventus Prediction

Despite another embarrassing performance at the weekend, we wouldn’t dare to write Juventus off before the kick-off. However, Atalanta are in far better shape, plus the incentive of conquering the Coppa Italia after 61 years is too powerful to be overlooked.

While Juventus carry a reputation as big-game specialists, it’s Atalanta’s time to climb to the podium.

Prediction: Atalanta Win

Juventus vs. Atalanta match preview

The Coppa Italia final is the only game remaining that has anything riding on it for Juventus. It’s one last chance to win a trophy this season.

Watch Final | Atalanta - Juventus Live Stream | DAZN ES

Somehow, some way, a team that has the league form of a relegation battler has advanced to the Coppa Italia final and can actually win itself a trophy in less than 24 hours from now.

It is no mystery who that team is, either.

The thing is, though, that team — one that has drawn five straight league fixtures — is going to be facing a team that is in a very different kind of state than their own. ............

In what is looking more and more like Max Allegri’s last chance to get a trophy as Juventus manager, Juventus heads into the Coppa final against red-hot Atalanta in the kind of form that makes you think they have very, very little chance of actually coming away with their first trophy in the Allegri 2.0 era. On that night, Juventus had a manager with much better hair than Allegri ever had, but faced this same Atalanta side that they will be facing on Wednesday night at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Some of those faces are still around from Juve’s 2021 Coppa win at the Mapei Stadium, while many have left. But even with the struggles that Andrea Pirlo’s one season as manager saw take place, there wasn’t any kind of extended run of form that is nearing an entire half-season like we’re seeing right now.

As much as you can try and tell yourself “it’s a one-off and anything can happen in those kinds of situations,” it’s impossible to ignore just how bad Juve has been no matter who htey have faced for this extended period of time.

It’s impossible to ignore the fact that both teams will be without very important figures in their respective lineups thanks to yellow cards picked up in the second leg of their respective semifinal ties.

Atalanta will be without their big man up front, Gianluca Scamacca, who can probably stake claim to being one of the most in-form strikers in Europe at the moment. Scamacca has been involved in 22 goals this season — one of three Atalanta players who can boast about that kind of production — and has surged into being the frontrunner when you try and answer the question “Who should Italy’s No. 9 be at the Euros?” that we all wondered about just a couple of months ago. On the other side of things, Juventus will be without Manuel Locatelli after his yellow card against Lazio — which, as you can probably guess, will have a whole lot of folks wondering what Allegri is going to do considering options are very much limited unless he does the like-for-like replacement routine and gives Hans Nicolussi Caviglia one of the biggest starts of his young career. ............

TEAM NEWS

  • As a reminder: Because of his yellow card in the second leg of the semifinals against Lazio, Locatelli will be suspended for the Coppa Italia final. That’s not good.
  • Allegri hinted at Hans Nicolussi Caviglia being the one who will step in for Locatelli just like he has on a handful of occasions this season, but said he still needs to “make final assessments” before determining if HNC will be starting or not.
  • On the injury front, Kenan Yildiz some sort of knock to his shoulder against Salernitana over the weekend. The young Turk has been called up by Allegri, but it seems unlikely that he will be able to have any sort of role other than the one he had a few days ago.
  • After partially training with the group on Monday, both Danilo and Alex Sandro have been called up to face Atalanta. Danilo, who spoke at Tuesday’s press conference, said he’s completely recovered and ready to go.
  • According to reports on Tuesday, Allegri tested out a 3-5-2 with Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior as Juve’s two wingbacks, with Andrea Cambiaso kicking inside to play as more of a central midfielder — somewhere he has been deployed a couple of times in recent weeks.
  • This will be the last game Juventus plays before Nicolo Fagioli is eligible to return to the field. His suspension ends on May 19, the day before Juve are set to face Bologna in their final road game of the season.
  • Mattia De Sciglio is the only Juventus player not called up due to injury.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

One might expect for yours truly to go with the very obvious pick — you know, the guy who will likely be stepping in for the suspended guy at a very important position on the field. ............

So, please, large shouldered Brazilian man with the strong jawline, we need you to be at your best more than ever before if Juve want even a fighter’s chance at beating Atalanta.

Atalanta BC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

I understand that Bremer’s job might be “a little” easier with there being no Scamacca in the lineup for Atalanta on Wednesday night, but that doesn’t mean La Dea are going to be something totally different or suddenly change the way they play against a Juventus side that you would expect will come out with a defense-first mindset. ............
