Tearful Locatelli sinks 10-man Milan as Juve close in on leaders Inter

An emotional Manuel Locatelli fired Juventus to within two points of Serie A leaders Inter Milan with the only goal in Sunday's 1-0 win at 10-man AC Milan, the Italy midfielder's boyhood club.

Manuel Locatelli's (C) winner at AC Milan was his first goal of the season

Massimiliano Allegri's side prevailed at a packed San Siro thanks to Manuel Locatelli's long-range strike in the 62nd minute, seven years to the day after scoring the winning goal for Milan against Juve.

Juve, who like Milan were missing a clutch of first-choice players from their starting XI, stay third but are closing in on Inter and a point behind Milan who have surrendered top spot to their local rivals.

Milan youth product Locatelli broke down in tears at the final whistle but his shot wouldn't have got past third-choice goalkeeper Antonio Mirante had it not been for a massive deflection off substitute Rade Krunic.

"It's always special playing here," said Locatelli to DAZN.

"Life took me on another path and I'm playing for the team I should be. But it's amazing that it was my goal which won it. It was emotional." ...........

Juventus take the points and run against AC Milan

Juve had a man advantage for 50 minutes, but only barely got themselves the three points at the San Siro

AC Milan v Juventus - Serie A TIM

There’s something to be said for symmetry.

On Oct. 22, 2016, Manuel Locatelli, then a 19-year-old kid out of the AC Milan academy, hit a second-half rocket from 30 yards out that beat Gianluigi Buffon and provided the difference in a 1-0 win for Milan over Juventus at the San Siro.

Seven years later, Manuel Locatelli, now an established veteran a few months shy of 26, hit a second-half rocket from 30 yards out that, with the help of a deflection, beat Antonio Mirante — Buffon’s former Juventus backup — and provided the difference for a 1-0 win for Juve over Milan at the San Siro.

As fun as that comparison is, Sunday’s match didn’t have much to recommend itself to Juventini other than the final score. The Bianconeri were almost unforgivably passive through the game’s first 40 minutes, and only an incredible save by Wojciech Szczesny in the early going kept the game scoreless.

The game turned on an inexplicable mistake by Milan’s Malick Thiaw, who rugby tackled Moise Kean to the ground after the Italy international turned him, earning himself a straight red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity. The dismissal gave Juve a man advantage for 50 minutes, but even after that it looked questionable whether Juve were capable of taking that advantage and doing anything with it. Locatelli’s strike eventually provided the difference, but for a game a lot of commentators have referred to as Juve’s statement of intent in the scudetto race, it brought up just as many questions as answers. ..............

Allegri immediately ceded the initiative to the opposition. By the time the game was 10 minutes old, all 10 of Milan’s outfield players were camped in Juve’s half. Ironically, it was one of the few counterattacks Milan had the chance to launch that produced the game’s first real chance, when Leao burned Gatti for pace and pushed forward, hitting the run of Giroud in the left channel. The Frenchman’s first touch carried him to the corner of the six-yard box, where he arrowed a low shot toward the far corner that Szczesny somehow got down to to push wide of the post. ..............

Juve hadn’t been able to get through Milan for counters very often, but Weah finally managed to unleash a pass that broke multiple lines. A slick touch from Kean set him up perfectly to run clean through on goal, but Thiaw pulled him down from behind before he was able to make the play. Referee Maurizio Mariani wasted little time in producing a straight red card for denying Kean a clear goalscoring opportunity. ..............

AC Milan vs Juventus - Serie A

Allegri sent on Vlahovic for Kean in the 55th minute, as well as a Andrea Cambiaso for a relatively ineffectual Kostic. But it took eight more minutes after that change for Juve to finally break through. A simple square pass from Weah to Locatelli ended a long sequence of passing, and Locatelli decided to load up and fire from 30 yards out. His shot took a big deflection off of substitute Rade Krunic, wrong-footing Mirante and sending the ball flying into the net behind the diving keeper. ..............

With 13 minutes to go, Allegri made the surprise move to bring on 18-year-old Dean Huijsen for his Serie A debut to replace Gatti, who had been walking on thin ice after a booking. Milan immediately arrowed in on the newcomer, but the Dutchman and his teammates made a quick statement in defense and the attack was soon evened back out. ..............

As Juve saw the rest of the game out, Allegri kept on seeing something he disliked, and eventually engaged in a rant on the sideline that included his trademark jacket-spike that eventually even included his tie being ripped off.

Thankfully the upset was for nothing, and Mariani soon brought the game to an end, and Juve scampered home with three points from one of their biggest games of the year to date.

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 7. Only had to make one save, but boy, oh boy, what a save it was. A goal that early completely changed the game. Commanded the defense well.

FEDERICO GATTI - 6. Got torched a few times by Leao, but it’s rare to find a center-back that won’t against that kind of elite-level pace. He played well otherwise, making three clearances and a tackle and completing 90.9 percent of his passes.

BREMER - 7. A big day for the Brazilian, who made six clearances and a pair of tackles while holding Giroud to that single shot.

AC Milan v Juventus - Serie A TIM

DANIELE RUGANI - 7. An understated but excellent day in place of the captain, finishing the day in a three-way tie for the team lead in clearances and marking his opponents well while playing all over the line.

TIMOTHY WEAH - 6. .........

WESTON McKENNIE - 6. .........

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6. One heck of a shot for that goal, which looked like it was going to test Mirante even without the massive deflection. Also defended very well, coming second on the team with five clearances and dropping back into his own box to stop up crossing lanes when needed.

ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5. His first day as captain went OK, but he wasn’t able to make any of those big runs through midfield that make him so effective. .........

FILIP KOSTIC - 5. .........

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 5. .........

MOISE KEAN - 5.5. The kind of game that shows everything he does well and everything that’s still holding him back. .........

SUBS

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 5.5. .........

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. .........

FEDERICO CHIESA - NR. .........

DEAN HUIJSEN - NR. His only counting stat was a clearance, but don’t sleep on how good the teenager was in his debut. He completed all 18 of his passes and very much looked like he belonged on a top-flight back line.

AC Milan v Juventus - Serie A TIM

FABIO MIRETTI - NR. On after Weah got hurt late on.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

I deeply wish Juventus was managed by someone who wasn’t so risk-averse.

That’s really the only descriptor for the way Allegri approached this game. Depleted as he was, Milan’s roster was in similar shape, and with a third-string goalkeeper in, one had to think that the plan would be to pepper him with shots and see what happens.

Instead, Allegri set the team up in a deep block that made it almost impossible for the team to get out of their own half and test Mirante. The forwards, when they did get the ball, would be so deep that they had to either hold the ball up or break out with it while having to get past multiple lines in the opposing formation. It doesn’t matter who your forward is at that point, they’re the underdog in that situation.

What was nigh-on unforgivable was the fact that Juve hardly kept that timidness on display even when up a man for upwards of 50 minutes. There were spells of the second half where Milan set themselves up in the Juve half even while down a man.

It was clear that Allegri’s goal in this game was to leave Milan with a point, and the other two would be a nice bonus. If there was anything that blared to the world that Allegri was playing it safe, it was the introduction of Cambiaso. Now, I’m rather high on the wing-back, but with a man advantage and searching for the goal to put you ahead, Juve was in prime Samuel Iling-Junior territory. Instead, Allegri left one of his most talented attacking players on his bench.

AC Milan v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Max Allegri has truly become a caricature of himself. He will defend until the bitter end with little in the way of regard for game situation or the fact that, you know, Juve need goals to win games. Instead, he’s turned himself into a modern-day Nereo Rocco, the 1960s-era Italian manager who is known to history as a man who believed a 0-0 draw was the epitome of football.

The problem there is that draws are worth less points. ..............

Juventus 1 - AC Milan 0: Initial reaction and random observations

A big, big win at San Siro sees Juventus suddenly within reach of the two Milan clubs atop the Serie A table.

AC Milan v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Five minutes before halftime Sunday night, Juventus were handed a lifeline. In a first half where Milan saw more and more of the ball as time went on, things suddenly changed when Malick Thiaw pulled down Moise Kean and saw a straight red for it just a few seconds later, leaving the home side suddenly down a man for the next 50 or so minutes.

So it begged the question: “What are you gonna do with it, Juve?”

Not a whole heck of a lot, but enough to get the only goal of the night and hang on from there.

For the second straight time out of an international break this season, Juventus got a big-time result in a big-time test. That one was a dismantling of one of their former managers at the Allianz Stadium, this time around was an absolute grinder of a 1-0 win over AC Milan in front of a sellout crowd at San Siro. The guy who decided it on the scoreboard? It just so happened to be former Milan midfielder Manuel Locatelli, whose long-range shot benefited from a big deflection on what proved to be Juve’s first shot of the night and past 40-year-old keeper Antonio Mirante to put Juve ahead with just under half an hour to go.

Locatelli is no stranger to scoring long-range efforts in this rivalry game, although it came on the other side of things back when he was a teenager.

On that night on Oct. 22, 2016, Locatelli beat Gigi Buffon.

On this night on Oct. 22, 2023, exactly seven years later, he beat the guy who used to be Buffon’s backup and was otherwise pretty impressive in his first appearance in over two years.

For Juventus, though, this was obviously a game that had Lady Luck on their side, whether it was with the Thiaw red card or the deflection that Locatelli’s sho took that meant Mirante had absolutely no chance on it. The first one played a huge role in how Juventus were able to play after halftime — which, considering that the first half saw Milan have almost 70% of the possession, Juve seeing more of the ball was always going to be an improvement on how the first 40 or so minutes went.

But even with more of the ball in the second half, it’s not like Juve had created a ton. Locatelli’s goal, in the 63rd minute, was Juventus’ first shot on target the entire night. Even with a man advantage, Juve only put four shots on frame the entirety of the second half — and two of those came on the double save that Mirante made as the Bianconeri tried to double their lead.

Would a bigger lead would have been nice with the man advantage? Of course, but thankfully Juventus looked pretty solid once they got the lead. That is probably the biggest thing that happened following Locatelli’s goal. .............

This is a big win no matter what you think Juve’s Scudetto chances may end up being a month or two from now. They’re now two points behind Inter in first, all of one point behind Milan in second and now have a pretty favorable schedule before the next international break arrives.

Then again, beating Milan is always nice no matter what the table looks like. .............

Allegri explains his late-match fury against Milan, insists others remain Scudetto favorites

AC Milan vs Juventus - Serie A

After sporting a calm figure for the majority of the match, Juventus manager Max Allegri went absolutely berserk towards the finale at San Siro.

The 56-year-old ripped off his jacket and tie in anger while kicking seemingly innocent advertising boards.

With the Bianconeri leading thanks to Manuel Locatelli’s solitary goal and Milan reduced to 10 men, the manager wanted to navigate the match towards safety while taking as few risks as possible. ...............

“In the last minutes, when you’re in the lead, you don’t have to force plays,” said the manager.

“Instead, you go for safe options. So no dribbling, no tackles, no passes in tight spaces.

Despite being two points adrift from league leaders Inter, Allegri once again downplayed Scudetto talk, insisting that other clubs like Milan, Inter and Napoli are the favorites to clinch the title.

“One match doesn’t change the narrative. Milan, Inter and Napoli remain the favorites, we are aiming for one of the top four places by taking one step at a time.

“We must have a solid first half of the season and then we’ll see in the second half.” ...............

“It was a match in which the boys played well defensively in the first half, then there are the decisive episodes.

“It’s been a long time since we won against Milan, I just have to thank the boys.” ...............

Locatelli, Weah and the most interesting stats from Milan vs Juventus

Milan-Juventus, Locatelli segna 7 anni esatti dopo il gol ai bianconeri nel 2016 | Sky Sport

On Sunday night, Juventus took full advantage of their numerical superiority to secure a 1-0 win over Milan away from home. The Bianconeri are now only two points behind league leaders Inter.

The club’s official website provided us with the most interesting stats and facts registered in the San Siro affair.

First, we begin with the man of the hour, Manuel Locatelli. The midfielder scored exactly seven years following his stunner against Gianluigi Buffon.

Thus, he became the first player to score for both clubs in this fixture before reaching the age of 26. .............

Yesterday’s clean sheet was Juve’s fourth in a row. The Bianconeri now have the highest number of shutouts among Serie A clubs in 2023 (16). Only Barcelona have produced more clean sheets amongst Europe’s Top Five leagues this year.

For the first time in the three-points-per-win era (beginning in 1994/95), four American players started a Serie A fixture. Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah were in Max Allegri’s starting formation, while Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah were on the opposite side.

Speaking of Tim Weah, he played a Milan-Juventus encounter 23 years, 11 months and a day following his father George’s last participation in this fixture back in November 1999. This was the Liberian legend’s final appearance in a Serie A contest.

Beppe Bergomi praises Juventus defending without Danilo against AC Milan

AC Milan 0-1 Juventus: Ten-man Milan miss chance to go top of Serie A with home defeat - BBC Sport

Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi has praised Juventus for their defensive performance in the match against AC Milan, even though they were without Danilo. The Brazilian defender is a crucial presence at the back for the club and his absence made the task of winning even more challenging for Juve.

Despite Danilo’s absence, Juventus delivered an impressive performance, particularly in defense, securing a 1-0 victory in the match. This victory has allowed Juventus to maintain pace with the top teams in the league this season, and they are eager to clinch the championship at the end of the campaign. ...........

“The Rossoneri paid for their absences, at the moment, those of Milan weigh more than those of Juventus. Danilo was missing today but in my opinion the Bianconeri did well in defence. For Juventus, a very important result.” ...........

Ambrosini explains key differences between Juventus and Inter Milan

Massimo Ambrosini

Juventus and Inter Milan are among the clubs vying for the Italian league title this season, setting the stage for an intense battle with their other rivals.

Both Juventus and Inter possess some of the finest players in Italy, and they are expected to be strong contenders in the title race throughout the season. In the last transfer window, Juventus made minimal reinforcements to their squad, while Inter Milan made more significant improvements. ..........

“The midfield is numerically not full, so if we look at the personnel, it is a step below compared to Inter, who are the best placed from this point of view. However, there are two factors in Juve’s favour, the wide margins for improvement of the players they have, and the absence from the cups, the weight of which will be seen over time.” ..........

Giancarlo Padovan reveals why Juventus should not be thinking about the Scudetto

Resumen del Milán vs Juventus de la Serie A - AS.com

While Juventus fans may be optimistic about their chances of winning the Italian Serie A this season, it appears that many others don’t share the same sentiment. Juventus is undeniably one of the top clubs in Serie A, and the fact that they are not participating in European competitions this season provides them with ample time for rest between games, potentially enhancing their domestic performance.

Despite these factors, Max Allegri has consistently downplayed expectations even after significant victories. ...........

However, journalist Giancarlo Padovan holds a contrary view, asserting that Juventus lacks the squad necessary to secure victory in Serie A. ...........

“It’s not to be contrary or even obtuse (even if I fear be), but I remain convinced that, despite the victory at San Siro, Juventus are not equipped to win the scudetto.

“First of all because they have an inadequate squad and, secondly, because they lost Pogba first (who never played ) and then Fagioli (who often played football, but not always).

“Coincidentally, two elements from the objectively weakest sector of the Bianconeri. Can Allegri play the whole season with McKennie as a starter, despite not being considered suitable even to be a reserve? Can Miretti replace Fagioli? And will Locatelli be able to have a uniform performance without indulging in mediocre performances?” ...........

Journalist insists Juventus is back to being a top club

AC Milan - Juventus live: Serie A - Football - TNT Sports

Journalist Enzo Bucchioni is of the opinion that Juventus has returned to its status as a top Italian club following their recent victory over AC Milan in the league.

Under the guidance of Max Allegri, the team is taking the season one game at a time, and the absence of European commitments has fueled the belief among many fans that they can secure the league title. .................

“They don’t have the cups, which have a huge impact on the energy level. It must be taken into account. Allegri has four extraordinary attackers in attack. Yesterday, Milan had no one out. Vlahovic and Chiesa are important weapons, the numbers show us an extraordinary defence. I don’t see why it can’t stay up front to take advantage of some slip-ups by the others. Juve is there, they’re back to being a cheerful team, in the hands of the coach. With this, no football.”  .................

Beppe Bergomi backs Locatelli for his celebration against AC Milan

AC Milan - Club details - Football - Eurosport

Former Inter Milan player Beppe Bergomi has expressed support for Manuel Locatelli’s celebration after scoring the winning goal that helped Juventus defeat AC Milan over the weekend.

Locatelli, who originally came through the Milan system and made his professional debut with the Rossoneri, later left the club to further his development at Sassuolo. Subsequently, he was signed by Juventus from Sassuolo, and he has been a key player in their lineup ever since. .............

“Locatelli? It’s right to celebrate because Juventus hadn’t won a direct clash against Milan for some time and this was a real direct clash. It’s a result very important for Juventus.”.............

Juventus mentality against AC Milan impresses Fabrizio Ravanelli

Juve-v-ac-milan1-940x523.jpg

Former Juventus striker Fabrizio Ravanelli has been thoroughly impressed with the mindset displayed by the current Juventus players in their recent match against AC Milan. Despite going into the game without several key players, including Nicolo Fagioli, Paul Pogba, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, and with Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic not fit to start, Juventus faced a challenging task against Milan.

The match was expected to be a tough one, and their chances of winning appeared diminished due to the absence of these key players. However, Juventus managed to secure a 1-0 victory, a result that left Ravanelli impressed. ..............

“I liked the Bianconeri against Milan above all for the mentality. The team is on track, they haven’t conceded a goal in four games, unlike at the beginning of the season.”

He added: “There’s just a little bit missing in the finalization phase, but he still has room for improvement to be able to compete for the Scudetto.” ..............

Claudio Gentile warns Juventus against getting carried away

Gentile

Former Juventus defender Claudio Gentile has issued a cautionary note to the Bianconeri as they make significant strides in the Serie A title race. Juventus is currently performing well in their quest to become champions, and their recent victory over AC Milan underscores their potential to be a contender this season. .................

Gentile’s advice to the players is to avoid complacency and maintain their focus on taking one game at a time, ensuring that they do not get carried away by their promising progress in the title race.

He said: “The growth of the defence is also important, as it has not conceded a goal in recent matches.

“The victory at San Siro, against Milan, boosts morale and can push Allegri’s team further. But Juve must not make the mistake of feeling like they already have the Scudetto.” .................

Alessio Tacchinardi explains why Juventus must be considered title challengers

Juventus Legend Alessio Tacchinardi: "I Don't Think Dybala Can Get Back To His Level Of Three Years Ago"

Alessio Tacchinardi has shared his thoughts on Juventus’ prospects of winning the league and emphasised why it’s important to believe they are genuine contenders.

Tacchinardi believes that Juventus will always be in the title race until the latter stages of the season, even if they are experiencing a challenging campaign. ..........

“Does today’s Juve have the strength to compete with Inter? Yes, because compared to previous years it has stopped being “nice” and wins dirty matches like the one against Milan.”

“Why doesn’t Allegri talk about the scudetto? I think it’s a strategy, but I’m not convinced. Why not fuel the enthusiasm and make the fans dream? I don’t think that if Juve finished fourth at the end of the season Giuntoli would be satisfied.” ..........

Opinion: Three Verona players who Juventus must look out for in Round 10

Juventus - Hellas Verona live uitslagen, H2H en opstellingen | Sofascore

Following wins over Torino and Milan, Juventus will be looking to extend their positive run when they host Hellas Verona at the Allianz Stadium.

Although the Bianconeri’s displays have been lukewarm, to say the least, their results placed them third in the Serie A table, only a couple of points adrift from league leaders Inter.

Therefore, Max Allegri’s men are expected to collect all three points against the Gialloblu on Saturday night, especially with Dusan Vlahovic potentially making his return to the starting formation. ............

So let’s take a closer look at three Hellas Verona players that Juventus must look out for this weekend.

Filippo Terracciano (Defender)

Darko Lazovic (Wingback)

Cyril Ngonge (Winger)

Juventus manager Max Allegri has acknowledged that their upcoming game against Verona this weekend is a must-win, especially after their impressive victory against AC Milan in their previous match. ..................

“There are many pitfalls in tomorrow’s match. Verona started well, they have physical strength, and they challenge you physically in the match. They have good players. To give value to Milan’s victory last Sunday, you need to get a result. Otherwise,, Let’s throw overboard what we did on Sunday.” ..................

The Serie A schedule makers have given us a few noticeable trends so far this season when it comes to how things look for Juventus coming out of international breaks. As we know, there have been two very big games right upon Juve’s returns, with Lazio in September and AC Milan at the San Siro last weekend. There’s another piece to the puzzle, though — and that’s who is next up that next weekend after each of those big games. ..........

By the time Juventus takes the field and lines up against Hellas Verona on Saturday night, the visitors will have gone nearly two whole months since their last win. And it’s wild to think about this is the same Hellas Verona team that won back-to-back games to open the 2023-24 season — and that is not a typo. This is very much the chance for Juventus to extend a struggling side’s woes and roll right on in to another big away fixture — this time in Florence against Fiorentina — next weekend. ..........

Can you see the object being constructed in the distance? It is The Trap. You know, the thing that Juventus has fallen into from time to time when they go from picking up a big three points against a big club — although not so much the last few years — and then faced a much, much lower quality of opponent a few days later. Hellas Verona are, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, nowhere near as good as Milan. But, much like after Juve’s big win over Lazio to come out of the last international break, there’s a struggling side lying in wait for Max Allegri’s squad to slip up against. ..........

The most interesting part of the night is how Max Allegri is going to play all of this. Do we get the same defense-first approach that we’ve seen a lot of (again) lately, and especially so in the win over a Milan team that played 50-plus minutes with 10 men? Or does Allegri, as his most important attacking players are getting healthy again, choose to be a little more expansive and doesn’t play as low of a block against a Hellas Verona team that has scored ... six goals all season.

I can tell you which the sold-out crowd that is expected at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday night probably wants to see. I can tell you what I want to see. But it’s not about us. It’s about Max and what he decides to do against one of the worst teams in the league and a sure-fire relegation battler come a few months from now. ..........

This is a game in which Juventus should win and win with room to spare regardless of the absent players. That’s more because of how Hellas are playing more than Juventus, but with another big game lying in wait next weekend, Juve needs to do some good things this weekend to ensure there’s no sort of panic before they go rolling into the land of Rocco Commisso and all Viola everything. ..........

Chiesa and Vlahovic may not start together for Juventus against Verona

Vlahovic e Chiesa fanno volare la Juventus contro la Lazio: terza sconfitta per la squadra di Sarri

Juventus fans are thrilled that Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic are back in good health, as they have been the club’s top scorers this season. These two players have formed the most effective attacking partnership at the club, and Max Allegri is always eager to field them together. When they play together, they tend to score goals, which is exactly what the Bianconeri need at the moment.

Nonetheless, Allegri has two other options in Arkadiusz Milik and Moise Kean, who have stepped up when Chiesa and Vlahovic were unavailable to play. Allegri typically introduces them into matches in the second half and starts Chiesa and Vlahovic. .............

The report indicates that Allegri is more likely to field one of them alongside either Milik or Kean. .............

Juventus vs Hellas Verona 1-0: Cambiaso Scores At the Death

Cambiaso inspired by Cancelo at Juventus: 'It's like being ...

Juventus left it late to beat a downtrodden Hellas Verona side at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday night. Andrea Cambiaso’s last-gasp winner has fired Bianconeri to the top of the Serie A standings, at least until tomorrow. ..............

Winless in seven consecutive league matches ahead of this trip, Verona had only one idea on their minds. Marco Baroni’s lads were out to frustrate Juventus with a ‘bus’ in front of Lorenzo Montipo’s goal without any ambition to hurt Wojciech Szczesny on the opposite side of the pitch, especially in the first half.

Moise Kean, who scored winning goals in both last season’s Serie A encounters between Juventus and Verona, was at the thick of every action before halftime. The Italian forward scored a brilliant solo goal in the 12th minute. He picked the ball midway through the visitors’ half and breezed past two Verona men before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner.

But his celebrations were short-lived as referee Ermano Feliciani disallowed the goal for the smallest offside you’ll see in Serie A this season. It wasn’t the end of the VAR drama tonight. Juventus continued to dominate the game but struggled to create many clear-cut chances. The next one came in the 19th minute. ..............

Despite weathering the storm in the first half, Verona had a long 45 minutes ahead of them. Eight minutes into the second half, Juventus found the back of the net again through Kean. The 23-year-old headed home an inch-perfect cross from the flank, but VAR denied him his first goal of the campaign again for a four in the build-up. ..............

Time-wasting techniques and rock-solid defending helped Verona endure the siege down the final stretch. Or so they thought! Late substitute Arkadiusz Mlik got his towering header on the end of Adrien Rabiot’s cross in the 96th minute. The ball rattled off the post and fell nicely for Cambiaso who tapped it home to give Juventus a well-deserved victory.

Juventus Player Ratings vs. Verona: Kean robbed of signature game, Bremer brilliant

Football Italia | Italian football news, analysis, fixtures and results for the latest from Serie A, Serie B and the Azzurri. - Football Italia

Although the score at full-time said 1-0, Juventus thoroughly destroyed Hellas Verona in every phase of play. They just couldn’t find the right finish, even though striker Moise Kean had two more goals against the Gialloblù on paper; it’s just that both were ruled out by VAR in controversial fashion.

Despite the heartbreak and the nail-biting drama, Juve were able to pull all three points at the Allianz Stadium, thanks to a literal last-minute goal from young substitute Andrea Cambiaso. .............

GK Wojciech Szczęsny, 6.0 – .............

CB Daniele Rugani, 6.0 – .............

CB Bremer, 8.0 – Yes, it was an easy assignment, but Bremer was still majestic at the back. It wasn’t just about his ability to read the game perfectly off the ball and mark Verona’s entire attack out of the match. The Brazilian center back keeps taking on more responsibility on the ball to attempt more difficult passes and not get discouraged when a gamble doesn’t pay off.

CB Federico Gatti, 6.5 – Clumsy at times, but you always have to admire his effort. Gatti is an asset to Juventus, and he nearly scored a blistering goal from distance in this one.

Midfield

LM Filip Kostić, 6.0 – .............

CM Adrien Rabiot, 6.5 – .............

DM Manuel Locatelli, 7.0 – His passing accuracy on those long pick-outs is a wonder to behold and perhaps only surpassed by Toni Kroos. Locatelli had a couple of world-class moments with his awareness of finding the “hidden” option in the attacking third. You wonder what he’d be capable of if Max Allegri did a little more with him.

CM Weston McKennie, 6.5 – A solid performance from the American, who was unlucky not to have an assist with his pinpoint cross to Kean. He covers a lot of ground for the Bianconeri.

RM Timothy Weah, 6.0 – .............

CM Fabio Miretti, 7.0 – .............

Forwards

ST Moise Kean, 8.0 – One of the unluckiest performances we have ever seen. Moise Kean was denied a sensational opening solo goal from range by the offside decision from VAR, as the very tip of his cleat was offside. It was the most minuscule decision, especially since Kean had his back to the goal; there was no advantage there.

As if that weren’t bad enough, he had a second goal denied, which was a headed goal from a Weston McKennie cross that he set up with some strong work on the ball. However, Kean’s strong work was deemed a foul after a VAR check. Since he did not know anything about slightly hitting Verona captain Davide Faraoni, it was a harsh way to deny a goal.

Kean was a bright spot throughout the match and was rightfully frustrated with how his night went. He should have had two.

ST Dušan Vlahović, 5.0 – Had a couple of nice moments as a creator and even with his attempts on goal, but, by and large, this was another disappointing display from the star striker. Juventini have so much faith in the former Fiorentina man, but there are high expectations placed on his shoulders. .............

“Till the end” Marchisio reacts to Juventus win against Verona

Serie A - Juventus-Hellas Verona 1-0: il gol di Cambiaso al 96° manda i bianconeri di Allegri in testa al campionato - Eurosport

Former Juventus player Claudio Marchisio has reacted to the Bianconeri’s victory against Verona tonight, thanks to a late goal by Andrea Cambiaso that earned them the win. ...............

Juve struggled to score the first goal, and it didn’t come, with at least two strikes ruled out by VAR.

It appeared that Verona might achieve the unexpected and secure a point at the Allianz Stadium. Nevertheless, Juve was determined to win and was not willing to settle for anything other than a victory in the match.

This meant they had to keep working hard and searching for the elusive goal until the end of the game.

Finally, Cambiaso scored in the seventh minute of added time, and the Bianconeri will go to bed atop the Serie A league standings for the first time in several months.

After the game, Marchisio posted an image of Cambiaso celebrating and captioned it: “Till the end.” ...............

After three-year wait, Juventus back on top of Serie A

A late strike from Andrea Cambiaso (second left) has sent Juventus top of the Italian league. (EPA PHOTO)

Embattled Juventus are on top of Serie A for the first time in more than three years.

Substitute Andrea Cambiaso scored seven minutes into stoppage time to earn the 36-time Italian champions a 1-0 win over Hellas Verona in Turin on Saturday.

Having dominated throughout, Juventus finally found the target when Cambiaso knocked the ball in from close range after an effort from Arkadiusz Milik came back off the post.

Juventus, who won nine straight titles between 2012 and 2020, were most recently top of the pile on August 1, 2020 - 1183 days and nearly 125 matches ago.

"These are three important points that add continuity after the game in Milan," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, referring to his side's 1-0 win at AC Milan last weekend. ..............

Juventus 1 - Hellas Verona 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Never in doubt, right?

Juventus v Hellas Verona FC - Serie A TIM

The moment when second-late substitute Kenan Yildiz saw his glorious scoring opportunity go flying over the crossbar and he subsequently dropped to his knees in agony, what went through your head? Was it that sinking feeling that this was proving to be one of those nights where Juventus deserved to win but had about the opposite amount of luck that they had at the San Siro six days earlier?

It’s OK to be honest. You’re not alone here, people. I was thinking it. I couldn’t help but think it after seeing two would-be Moise Kean goals get waved off by VAR and Juve’s shot count fly past 20 ... 22 ... 25 ... and close in on 30 without anything to actually show for it on the scoreboard.

But that 30th and final shot of the night deeeeeeeeeeep into stoppage time, in a complete mess inside of the Hellas Verona 6-yard box, was the one that decided it.

For the second straight weekend coming out of the October international break, Juventus recorded a 1-0 win. This one, though, came in a completely different kind of manner as the trip to San Siro was, as Andrea Cambiaso’s 97th-minute (!!) goal with bodies scattered throughout the penalty area gave Juve another slim win but a vastly important one that sends Max Allegri’s squad top of the table, even if it’s just for 24 hours or so.

A hectic night that involved more frustration with VAR and a whole lot of moments to forget in front of goal ended with a player who wasn’t even on the roster the last time Juve played Hellas Verona scoring his first-ever goal in Juve colors in one hell of a fashion. ..............

Top of the list had to be the VAR calls, which cost Moise Kean his first two goals of the season even though neither of the calls made sense when you consider how they came about. (And then you look at how Davide Faraoni acted after being “fouled” by Kean in the build-up to the second goal that was called off and you just know how much of a horrible call it was after the fact.)

Faraoni, l'incredibile simulazione per far annullare il gol di Kean

.bah .ciao

For everything that Juventus created — and, when you finish with 30 shots attempted, that’s certainly a lot — there’s simply no reason as to why it took until basically the final moments of stoppage time to win this. Then again, that sometimes happens — especially with this team because even on days in which they take a ton of shots, they don’t really prove to be the most clinical of teams. Proof for it is as follows:

  • 30 shots attempted
  • Six shots on target
  • One goal scored
  • 3.40 xG

That’s not exactly the kind of showing in the final third in which you want to brag about. But sometimes when you have two goals called off by VAR that shouldn’t have been called off by VAR, then things are going to end up being rather interesting. ..............

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • I got a text from an unnamed Juventus friend in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time about how Andrea Cambiaso hadn’t done much since coming on. Less than two minutes later, Cambiaso scored the game-winning goal. Reverse jinx, baby!
  • The fact that the back half of Moise Kean’s heel was “offside” and that they ruled that he gained an advantage because of it just shows you how it was technically the right call by the letter of the law but it’s another instance that there’s so much need for a little wiggle room from referees and VAR. Did Kean score the goal because he heel was literally centimeters ahead of the defender? No, he scored because it was a great individual effort after he got the ball under control. ..............
  • That referee, by the way, was a complete joke. But then again, this is Italy, so it’s pretty much par for the course unfortunately.
  • Juventus had 65% possession through the first 20 minutes and I wasn’t sure what I was watching for a second. ..............
  • Vlahovic touched the ball 15 times in the first half.
  • Szczesny touched the ball 13 times in the first half. ..............

Juve’s luck finally holds in final seconds against Verona

A game that would have been comfortable with competent officiating looked to be lost points until a last-ditch winner.

Juventus v Hellas Verona FC - Serie A TIM

Saturday night’s game between Juventus and Hellas Verona should not have ended on a last-gasp scramble in front of the visitors’ goal.

Juventus should have been one or two goals to the good by the hour mark, were it not for refereeing decisions that were frankly incompetent. Moise Kean was cheated out of two goals, one by the dogmatism of an offside rule that needs changing in the worst way, one by a bit of playacting that took in both the referee and the VAR official.

Those game-changing calls left Verona with the opportunity to scamper out of the Allianz Stadium with a point that they absolutely didn’t deserve. But after 97 minutes of frustration, on virtually the last kick of the game, Juve’s luck finally held. Fabio Miretti spotted Federico Gatti standing unmarked on the other side of the field and switched it to him. The center-back sent a peach of a cross to the back post for Arkadiusz Milik, who headed it back across goal. It looked for a second like yet another agonizing miss as the Pole’s shot bounced off the inside of the post, but Lorenzo Montipò and Pawel Dawidowicz both failed to clear the ball, and Andrea Cambiaso jammed the ball into the back of the net, setting the team and the crowd into a frenzy. One last desperate move forward by Verona fizzled quickly, confirming a 1-0 victory that should have been a lot more. ........

Massimiliano Allegri trotted out the usual 3-5-2 formation, with Wojciech Szczesny in goal, protected by Gatti, Bremer, and Daniele Rugani. Timothy Weah and Filip Kostic started as wing-backs, around the midfield of Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli, and Adrien Rabiot. Kean and Dusan Vlahovic paired up up front. ........

Juve had already been knocking on the door when the first of Kean’s run-ins with VAR happened in the 13th minute. The Italy international retreated deep to receive a pass from Bremer, made a pair of defenders look foolish dribbling past them, and unleashed a shot from 23 yards heading toward the near post. The ball deflected off Vlahovic before zipping into the net, just inside the post. Kean celebrated the goal, but soon referee Ermanno Feliciani signaled that VAR had signaled that he was offside, much to Kean’s disbelief. That disbelief soon spread to full-on contempt for fans watching at home when the semi-automated offside image came up and displayed what had been detected: Kean had been offside by approximately two cleats on his heel when he was running back to receive Bremer’s pass. It was yet another regrettable instance of a millimeter offside call chalking off a goal despite the attacking player in no way ending up with an advantage. ........

Juventus v Hellas Verona FC - Serie A TIM

Allegri made a shift at the half, sending on Miretti for Weah and pushing McKennie out wide. Kean continued to be the focal point of the attack, missing a free header just wide three minutes after the restart. Less than a minute later Montipò had to palm the ball around the post (a shot that officially was referred to as a miss because Feliciani somehow missed that the keeper had touched it and gave a goal kick.

A few minutes later Kean thought he finally had his first goal this season when he made a fantastic run through the middle of the box to steal in front of Magnani and skip a header past Montipò. It was an excellent passage of play all around, so it was a real surprise when Feliciani suddenly signaled for a VAR review. That review centered around the very start of the sequence, when Kean had won the ball off Faraoni. Kean’s arm during the 50/50 challenge had brushed Faraoni’s face, who went down like he’d been shot and stayed there for a minute trying to milk a call. When that didn’t work, he pulled himself up to his hands and knees to watch the play develop, and the instant Kean scored he decided his face hurt again and he immediately began rolling around again. It was playacting worthy of Sergio Busquets, and worse, it completely duped both VAR official Luigi Nasca and Feliciani, who disallowed the goal upon his return to the field.

Faraoni, l'incredibile simulazione per far annullare il gol di Kean

It was an utterly incompetent moment on the part of both men, and it left Kean stinging to the point where he went off on the ref a few minutes later when it was ruled that Kostic didn’t keep the ball in along the sideline. The booking that followed likely ended his night, as at the hour mark Allegri brought him off for Federico Chiesa, as much to avoid a second frustration yellow as anything else. ........

Juve should’ve had a penalty in the late stages of the game when Chiesa was bowled over in the box, only for Feliciani to deem being dragged to the ground somehow fair play. ........

Folorunsho, sbracciata in faccia e sgambetto a Chiesa in area: incredibile rigore negato

All seemed lost at that point, but Juve had one more push left for Cambiaso to do something special.

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 7. Only needed to make one save, but it was a solid one. ........

FEDERICO GATTI - 6.5. Did well shutting down anything that came his way and provided the key pass for what turned into the winner.

BREMER - 7. Another pretty excellent day from the Brazilian ........

DANIELE RUGANI - 6. ........

TIMOTHY WEAH - 5.5. ........

WESTON McKENNIE - 6. ........

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6. Completed eight of 11 long balls and recorded two key passes. More than any other game in recent memory started sending some incisive balls through the defense to break the lines.

ADRIEN RABIOT - 6. ........

FILIP KOSTIC - 6. ........

MOISE KEAN - 6.5. Made all the right runs, did all the right things, and had absolutely none of the luck. In a just world neither of the goals he scored would’ve been disallowed. If he keeps going like this, the stats will come.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 6. Still shaking off some rust from his injury layoff, but looked lively for the most part and just lacked the killer edge we saw at the beginning of the season, but if he keeps it up he’ll find it again.

SUBS

FABIO MIRETTI - 6. ........

FEDERICO CHIESA - 6. ........

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6.5. Much more unpredictable than Kostic, he was often much further inside to give Chiesa some room to operate out wide. He had two key passes and, of course, was Johnny on the spot for the winner.

Juventus v Hellas Verona FC - Serie A TIM

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - NR. ........

KENAN YILDIZ - NR. ........

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Yeah ... not much to say here.

I was frankly a little surprised — pleasantly so — that the team didn’t drop back and play on the counter, because Allegri has shown his preference for doing that even against teams like this over the last two years. ........ That they scored the winner the way they did is probably a byproduct of that, as they had the confidence to keep moving forward even after the disappointments of Kean’s disallowed goals.

Speaking of Kean, it was the right move to take him off, because by that point he was so frustrated he was going to get himself a red card. If there was one thing I really quibble about, it’s the fact that once again Samuel Iling-Junior was left sitting on the bench in a situation where Juventus was chasing the game. Iling is one of the best attacking talents on this roster, and while Cambiaso played well and obviously scored the goal, to not put on such a gifted attacker when a goal is needed seems like a strange way to go about things. The man’s only played 89 minutes this year — and still has an assist to his name in that time. Let the kid out, Max.

LOOKING AHEAD

Next week is a big game as Juve head to an always hostile Stadio Artemio Franchi to face a Fiorentina team that is pushing its way into the top four race. After that the team comes home to face Cagliari.

“My happiest yellow card” Cambiaso delighted after scoring Juventus winner

Cambiaso

Andrea Cambiaso has jokingly expressed his delight at receiving a yellow card for celebrating his late goal for Juventus against Verona last night.

The wing-back came to the rescue after Juve had struggled to find a goal throughout the match. ............

“This is a very important goal, I am so happy. This means a lot, we are top of the table and will enjoy it for a few hours at least.

“It was also my happiest yellow card, it was well worth it!” ............
