Atalanta vs Juventus Preview: Probable Lineups, Prediction, Tactics, Team News & Key Stats

Juventus and Atalanta will lock horns in a pivotal clash at the top end of the table, with both sides aiming to keep the pressure on the Milan clubs.

Atalanta v Juventus Match Preview and Scouting | Juvefc.com

Gian Piero Gasperini will want his side to show consistency ahead of a tricky run of games. Despite Atalanta occupying the fourth spot on the table, the Bergamo side have not showcased the certain form that makes them title contenders or even top-four challengers, for that matter, ahead of a critical game against Juventus. ........

Massimiliano Allegri, on the other hand, will have been left scratching his head at the outcome of last weekend’s clash against Sassuolo. A bizarre own goal late in the game all but ended Juventus’s hopes of securing a draw that resulted in their first loss of this season.

Juventus did respond with a narrow 1-0 win over ten-man Lecce in midweek, which took them closer to the Milan clubs. Currently, the Bianconeri sit in third and two points behind the top two, meaning a positive result over Atalanta could bring them closer to the summit.

Incidentally, a win over Atalanta and losses for the Milan clubs could result in Juventus finishing the weekend with a one-point lead at the summit. However, the form of those two sides would ensure at least one of them gets a positive result, and as things stand, Juventus will likely remain where they are in the standings right now.

Team News & Tactics

Atalanta

For Gian Piero Gasperini, there are not too many problems with the squad. The only two players missing are summer signings El Bilal Toure and Gianluca Scamacca, and nothing has come out of the ordinary in the last few games. ......

Probable Lineup (3-4-1-2): Musso; Toloi, Scalvini, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, De Roon, Ederson, Ruggeri; Lookman, Koopmeiners; De Ketelaere

Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri, too, does not have any fresh concerns with his squad, with Alex Sandro, Mattia De Sciglio, and Paul Pogba the current absentees. The only other doubt is with main striker Dusan Vlahovic, who continued to train separately but is expected to recover from a back problem in time for this game. ......

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Szczesny; Rugani, Bremer, Danilo; McKennie, Fagioli, Locatelli, Rabiot, Cambiaso; Vlahovic, Chiesa

Key Stats

  • Atalanta have won all their matches at home in Serie A this season.
  • Atalanta have only one victory in their last ten games against Juventus at home.
  • Atalanta have won four of their six Serie A games this season.
  • Juventus are undefeated in 35 of their last 38 matches against Atalanta in all competitions.
  • Juventus have only one loss in their Serie A campaign this term.

Player to Watch

Federico Chiesa

A stellar start to the campaign will have boosted the winger’s confidence after a sub-par season last time out. Chiesa has never started a professional campaign with his current numbers and will hope to build on this in the coming games. ......

Prediction

Atalanta 1-2 Juventus

This clash between the third and fourth placed team offers very little in terms of productivity from either side, but surely promises to be an entertaining encounter. Both teams have had a similar run of form since the campaign began, and this does have the elements of being a cagey clash.

Yet, Juventus could rely on their experience, especially Massimiliano Allegri’s against Gian Piero Gasperini, to get three points here. Both sides have the quality in all areas. But Juventus may have that slight edge to dictate the direction of the win in this encounter.

Allegri expected to make changes and Vlahovic out of Atalanta game

Chiesa Vlahovic

Juventus is set to face Atalanta on Sunday, and the team will likely see Moise Kean partner Federico Chiesa up front following news that Dusan Vlahivic is out. .......

Wojciech Szczesny will keep his place in goal, supported by a probable defensive trio consisting of Gleison Bremer, Danilo and the return of Federico Gatti.

Weston McKennie will likely assume his position on the right flank, while Filip Kostic is expected to be on the left replacing Andrea Cambiaso.

In central midfield, Manuel Locatelli and Adrien Rabiot will be paired, with possibly Nicolo Fagioli positioned ahead of them. .......

Allegri: ‘Vlahovic and Milik out against Atalanta’

Max-Allegri-shout-point-Juventus.jpg

Max Allegri confirms both Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik are out of the Juventus squad for their head-to-head with Atalanta. ‘We have to see these situations as motivation.’

It kicks off on Sunday at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

“Usually the games against Atalanta are hard-fought, they are in a good period of form, did not concede at home, so we must play with great focus and try to keep a good tempo,” Allegri said in his press conference.

“We already had a head-to-head with Lazio and tomorrow Atalanta are a physical, aggressive team and we must make sure that we are ready. It’s not like the campaign ends tomorrow.” ......

“There’s no point looking at the table at this moment, even if staying in the top four would help boost our self-esteem. The team is growing physically too, Adrien Rabiot and Timothy Weah are stepping up a gear. .....

“Vlahovic has the usual back issue that kept him out for a few days last week, he had a lot of pain, so it’s best to let him rest and make the full recovery.

“Moise Kean returns, but Milik is out, as he had a few issues with his calf and it is again best not to risk it. We will have Mancini with us, a lad from the Next Gen team.

“Kean will start tomorrow, in midfield there will be one between Fabio Miretti and Nicoló Fagioli, I will decide tomorrow.” .......

Atalanta and Juventus fire blank in cautious encounter

Bremer De Ketelaere

At the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Atalanta and Juventus settled for a draw following a cagey stalemate.

Max Allegri started with his usual 3-5-2 formation. With Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz both out with injuries, Moise Kean led the line alongside Federico Chiesa.

Weston McKennie and Andrea Cambiaso maintained their spots on the flanks, with Nicolo Fagioli joining Manuel Locatelli and Adrien Rabiot in the middle of the park. Federico Gatti returned to the starting formation, supporting Danilo and Gleison Bremer at the back.

Unfortunately for the neutrals, the first half turned out to be a tepid affair. Davide Zappacosta had the best chance of the first 45 minutes but failed to make the Bianconeri defenders pay for their defensive complacency on back-to-back shots. .......

After the interval, Juventus had their best chance of the match when Chiesa tried to rocket his shot past Musso, but the Argentine was equal to it.

Afterwards, it was all Atalanta as the Bianconeri crawled back to their area of the field. Luis Muriel came off the bench and almost scored from a fabulous freekick, but Wojciech Szczesny delivered a spectacular save, sending the ball towards the woodwork with his fingertip. .......

But at the final whistle, it felt as if both sides were happy to share the spoils, regardless of what the fans thought of this uninspiring encounter.

Final Score: 0-0

Juventus XI (3-5-2): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer (Rugani), Danilo; McKennie (Weah), Fagioli (Miretti), Locatelli, Rabiot, Cambiaso (Kostic); Chiesa, Kean (Yildiz)

Juventus 0 - Atalanta 0: Initial reaction and random observations

Not sure it could have been better. But it definitely could have been a lot worse.

Atalanta BC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

As the time ticked away and got closer and closer to the final whistle Sunday evening, it was pretty clear what Juventus’ main objective was — make sure you leave Bergamo without any major damage done. That is, don’t let an Atalanta team that was pushing late for all three points do as they so desired.

It was not as routine as Max Allegri so desired.

And if not for some Wojciech Szczesny brilliance, then a little bit of luck after some Szczesny nerviness, this wouldn’t have been the “head home with a point” kind of feeling like Max wanted it to be. .........

Atalanta dominated early. They pinned Juve back late. Juventus managed just one shot — ONE! ONE SINGLE SHOT! — the entire second half. That tells you all you need to know about how things were going when Juve went forward at the beginning of the second half and how it was more of a deal to simply hang onto the scoreless draw as time went on.

Juve were outshot 15-5 on the night. Those five shots, as you can probably guess, were a season low for a Juve side that has now scored just one goal in its last two games since the 4-2 loss to Sassuolo.

On the whole, I guess the one point is better than the alternative. Winning in Bergamo has become a tough task as Atalanta has become more and more of a true rival for a spot in the top four. And considering that Juventus were without Dusan Vlahovic and his direct replacement, Arek MIlik, seeing them struggle with no true reference point up top was not really all that surprising.

But at the same time, you just wish you could see more.

Passes are still a total mixed bag when this team tries to push forward no matter if it’s out of the back or from the under-fire midfielders. The build-up continues to be slow when they do have extended periods of possession — so much so that the cameras are still cutting to Allegri on the sidelines screaming at his team to move the ball quicker. There were times where Federico Chiesa felt like a one-man band up front and the lone outlet to either create a scoring chance or be the one who does the goal scoring. (Remember, Chiesa was the one who had that lone shot in the second half that stung Juan Musso’s gloves after an Atalanta turnover at the back.) ........

I guess one point is better than none. But this was a winnable game even with the names who were missing — and Juventus just couldn’t muster much of anything to get it done.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • It took nearly 30 minutes for Juventus to even attempt their first shot.
  • It’s a good thing Davide Zappacosta can’t finish worth a lick or else this would have been an uphill battle for 75 or so minutes.
  • There was one point midway through the first half that Atalanta held over 70 percent of the possession. At halftime, Juventus had a 53-47 edge. The thing is, though, so much of it was just sterile possession and not passes that tried to break down Atalanta’s defense. Lots of passing from one side or the other at the back, with Danilo and Bremer combining for over 90 touches in the first half.
  • Juventus had two key passes in the first half, according to SofaScore. Federico Chiesa had one of them. The other? Wojciech Szczesny.
  • Adrien Rabiot picked up a yellow card right before halftime. That was Juve’s league-leading 18th yellow card this season. Considering it’s the first day of October, I’d say that’s not great.
  • Danilo went on to be booked as well, pushing that league-high total to 19. .......
  • I love Nicolo Fagioli. I really do! But he had so many misplaced passes or turnovers in the first half that I was kinda surprised that he wasn’t yanked for Fabio Miretti sooner. Maybe Allegri decided he’d give him a little bit of run in the second half to see if he could snap out of it  ........
  • This team looks tired. Hopefully the full week between the trip to Bergamo and the Turin derby ends up helping out because I’m guessing a so-so performance against Torino isn’t exactly going to sit well with a lot of folks.

Flat Juventus earn lucky point in scoreless draw vs. Atalanta

Max Allegri’s side were lucky to escape Bergamo with a point.

SOCCER: OCT 1 Serie A - Atalanta v Juventus

Juventus and Atalanta played to a goalless draw on Sunday in what is a “choose your own adventure” story vis-a-vis Max Allegri’s approach to the game.

Adventure 1: Minus his top two strikers, the coach employed a pragmatic and conservative — albeit insipid — game plan that earned the Old Lady a point away from home against a decidedly top-seven Serie A opponent. Or, if you like, Adventure 2: Fearing the vulnerability that truly going for a win would endow on his team, the coach essentially bowed to cowardice against a good team that Juventus should still aim — every time, home or away — to defeat.

Juventus offered essentially nothing offensively for the first third of this game. In the opening minutes in a buzzing atmosphere, Juventus sat back in an organized block as if they were guarding a 1-0 lead with a 3-0 lead on aggregate in the second fixture of a Champions League tie. There was no desire to play forward or attack meaningfully; it just clearly wasn’t part of the plan. The press that has been a feature of some of the team’s early games was clearly not in the plans against Atalanta.

Atalanta, frankly, were unlucky not to score against this allegedly stout defense, as Davide Zappacosta flubbed not one but two opportunities. .......

After conceding possession almost entirely for the opening phase of the game, Juventus balanced the scales the rest of the way and produced another shot on goal a few minutes later when Federico Chiesa and Moise Kean played a little two-man game. Freddy dropped back to receive the ball, turn, and then find Kean who held the ball up well and then split two defenders. Chiesa wanted the ball played back to him, but Kean lined up for a shot on goal without too much sting.

Several minutes into the second half Chiesa had probably Juventus’ best chance on the day after a long ball from Danilo ricocheted off a couple Atalanta players fortuitously to Chiesa, but the left-footed effort was beamed directly at Musso.

The longer the game went on, the more you felt like both sides were going to be happy with a draw. Wojciech Szczęsny managed to make sure that remained the case when he produced an absolutely world-class save on a Luis Muriel free kick around the 73rd minute ........

Atalanta BC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

LE PAGELLE

Wojciech Szczęsny — 7.5. Juve’s Polish keeper completed 11 of 15 long balls and single-handedly earned the Bianconeri a point with his world-class save on the Muriel free kick. Both of those reasons are why he stays between the sticks, as solid as Mattia Perin is.

Federico Gatti — 6. ........

Danilo — 7. ........

Bremer — 7. Let’s hope that the early exit was indeed merely cramps, because Juventus can’t afford to lose him for any meaningful amount of time. Like Danilo, he’s reaching an impressive level of consistency. The two Brazilians not only pair well together, but help make up for some of Gatti’s greenness. I hope he wears the shirt for a very long time.

Andrea Cambiaso — 5.5. We’ve not seen the youngster play terribly well since his first game in the shirt. .........

Adrien Rabiot — 6. ........

Manuel Locatelli — 6.5. Juventus’ best midfielder on the day. Locatelli completed 8 of 10 long balls against Atalanta.

Nicolò Fagioli — 5.5. ........

Weston McKennie — 6. A hard-working performance with nothing particularly flashy to show for it ........

Federico Chiesa — 6.5. Freddy Church did about all he could but was not in a great position to make things happen. He did manage one threatening shot but the ball banged right off the Atalanta goalkeepers gloves.

Atalanta BC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Moise Kean — 5.5. Tough day for Kean in his first start of the season. Only 28 touches in 74 minutes, and only one shot during that span which was an easy save from the keeper. Showed a couple glimpses of dribbling and hold-up, but for the most part a non-factor like the rest of the Juventus attack.

SUBS

Fabio Miretti — 5.5. .......

Kenan Yıldız — 5.5. Tried to buzz around and make a nuisance of himself and be available for movements forward, but hardly was able to get involved with only eight touches in 20 minutes of playing time. If the top strikers are out for an extended period of time, the young Turk will need to show more palpably what all the optimism is about.

Filip Kostić — 5.5. ........

Timothy Weah — NR. Still waiting for Weah to break out more. He’s got the speed, and as we saw on his recent international duty he can score goals. He just needs the right moment at Juventus.

Daniele Rugani — NR. .......

MANAGER ANALYSIS

How you view Allegri’s approach to this game from the get-go is going to be how you evaluate the outcome. As much as I want to say, “This is Juventus; we should face any team on the planet looking for a victory,” I’m not sure reality squares with the mentality. That said, I don’t look at this Atalanta side and see anything that should’ve caused such a trepidatious angle. Juventus should’ve been looking for the win, and it’s disappointing to have walked into the fixture in that posture.

Atalanta BC v Juventus - Serie A TIM

Allegri’s game plan worked to (literally) a point, but he’s damn lucky it did. The only consistency achieved so far this campaign has been inconsistency; without European competition, this needs to change sooner rather than later. It feels like there’s still very little identity, and perhaps even less intensity, to this team. ........

“A good point” – Allegri satisfied with Atalanta draw, provides update on Bremer

Serie A, Atalanta-Juventus 0-0: tabellino e voti

On Sunday, Juventus settled for a draw against Atalanta in what was an underwhelming encounter in Bergamo.

The Bianconeri were hardly able to threaten Juan Musso’s goal throughout the match. The hosts had the more dangerous opportunities, especially towards the end of the second half, but the Old Lady was able to escape unscathed.

After the final whistle, Juventus coach Max Allegri seemed content with his away point which was just enough to keep his team in the Top Four positions.

“We took a risk, in the end gaining a good point which allows us to remain in the top positions,” .......

“In the first half, we could have been more clinical and calm with the ball at our feet. The boys played a good game, but we weren’t too convincing when it came to scoring goals. .......

“We didn’t lose and the point is important to stay close to the leading pack. Now we have a week to prepare for the Derby.

“Torino aren’t playing in European cups either, so we’ll both have a week to prepare for the match. In the league, they always say who is favorite or not, cups or no cups, we have to stick to the Top Four places, to also grow in self-esteem”. ......

“As for Bremer, it was just cramps, nothing major.”

Juventus fans slam Allegri for his post-match comments

Atalanta-Juventus 0-0, Allegri oggi è contento: "Un punto va bene"

Max Allegri has faced criticism from Juventus supporters for his response to the team’s draw against Atalanta over the weekend. Despite having lost only one game this season, Juventus faced a challenging match in Bergamo, a fixture that was perceived as potentially tricky, similar to their previous loss to Sassuolo.

Allegri’s team aimed to avoid defeats at this stage of the season, but their performance in the goalless draw against Atalanta wasn’t particularly outstanding. Despite this, Allegri expressed satisfaction with the result.

However Juventus fans were surprised that their manager would feel proud of a goalless draw against Atalanta, and some have expressed disappointment in how the team’s standards seem to have declined under his management. There were even calls for Allegri to leave the club immediately due to his acceptance of such a result. .......

Updates on Vlahovic and Milik conditions ahead of Torino Derby

La Juventus alla ricerca del bomber perduto: quanta fatica per Vlahovic e Milik | Goal.com Italia

Last weekend, Arkadiusz Milik and Dusan Vlahovic were both out of the Juventus squad that traveled to Bergamo.

Therefore, Max Allegri had to rely on a slightly tired Federico Chiesa alongside Moise Kean in attack. The duo fired blank in a forgettable encounter that ended as a goalless draw.

Therefore, the Bianconeri will be hoping to recover their attacking duo ahead of Saturday’s Derby della Mole clash against Torino. .......

The Polish striker returned to training on Monday while the rest of the squad was given a day off.

The 29-year-old looks determined to overcome this physical hurdle and make himself available on the weekend.

As for the Serbian, the club remains cautiously optimistic regarding his recovery. In order to join his teammates for the upcoming showdown, he must return to training with the group by Thursday at most.

Juventus gets a boost as Milik returns to training but Vlahovic still a doubt

Milik un fattore: quando lui segna la Juventus non perde mai

Juventus has received a positive update on the fitness front ahead of their upcoming weekend game against Torino. Arkadiusz Milik has returned to training during the team’s latest session, providing a boost to their preparations for the derby match.

While the Bianconeri have been concerned about the fitness of several players, including Milik and Dusan Vlahovic, the latest information indicates that the Polish striker was able to participate in the training session. However, Vlahovic was not part of the group training and instead worked on his own, suggesting that he may still require more time to regain full fitness. ........

Pundit urges Juventus to focus on winning Serie A

scudetto

Juventus fans have endured a period of two seasons without significant success in any competition, and the pressure is mounting on the current team to deliver silverware at the end of this campaign. The expectations from fans are high, and they may find it difficult to forgive the team if they fail to secure a trophy. ........

Pundit Manuel Gerolin has emphasised the importance of putting the primary focus on winning the Italian top flight. Securing the Serie A title should be viewed as a top priority, given the competitive nature of the league and the desire to end the trophy drought.

“It will be a good championship until the end. There are still many matches to go but the two Milanese teams are the most accredited together with Napoli. And Juve only has to think about the championship, in the long run it can be an advantage. And watch out for Atalanta.” .......

Chiellini reveals what the key to Juventus success could be this season

Chiellini

Former Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini is optimistic about the potential of a successful on-field partnership between Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic. These two players serve as the goal-scorers in Max Allegri’s 3-5-2 formation, and they have been showing promising chemistry on the field in the early part of this season. ........

The fans are dreaming of Juventus reclaiming the Serie A title, and if Chiesa and Vlahovic can continue to build on their on-field understanding, it could lead to something special for the Bianconeri in the current campaign.

Chiellini still follows them even though he now plays in another continent and says:

“Milan has three champions like Maignan, Theo and Leao, but also enormous potential in the rest of the squad, while Juve has a young team. The others have something more, but if Vlahovic and Chiesa start to work well together, they can still aspire to something important .” .......

Juventus suffer Chiesa blow with the attacker now at risk of missing Torino match

Federico Chiesa sarebbe stato offerto al Napoli da intermediari di mercato: il retroscena - Calcio | Tribuna.com

............

Injuries have posed a significant challenge for Juventus recently, particularly in their attacking department. Nevertheless, they had hoped to have Federico Chiesa available for the match, and he had been training alongside Moise Kean to form a partnership for the game.

However, there is now uncertainty surrounding Chiesa’s availability. The former Fiorentina player sustained a setback during training, and this incident may potentially sideline him from the upcoming match. The nature and severity of the injury are yet to be confirmed, but Chiesa was forced to leave the training session following the incident, raising concerns that he may have indeed suffered an injury. ..........

Allegri confirms Vlahovic and Chiesa will miss Torino match

Juventus: meglio vendere Vlahovic o meglio vendere Chiesa? | Goal.com Italia

Juventus manager Max Allegri has confirmed that Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa are unavailable for their game against Torino this weekend, a massive blow for the club.

Juve has worked hard throughout this week to earn all the points from the fixture, with the gaffer planning to field a front-two of Moise Kean and Chiesa, as Vlahovic has been injured.

However, Chiesa suffered a blow yesterday and is not expected to be fit enough for the game against Il Toro. ..........

On how Juve can score, he adds: “We have Kean, Milik, Yildiz. Rabiot scores goals, and we have Fagioli and Miretti, who will start to score goals. Especially Fabio. Then the defenders who have been good attackers on dead balls. We will face an angry Torino. It’s always difficult to face. Juric’s teams are very strong physically and we will have to fight.” ........

SERIE A PREVIEW | JUVENTUS V TORINO

empoli-fc-v-juventus-serie-a-1-1170x779.jpg

Serie A fans will be treated to another edition of the Turin derby before we head into the international break following Matchday 8.

Juventus will approach this match on the back of a goalless stalemate with fellow top-four contenders Atalanta. The match marked the Bianconeri’s second successive clean sheet following a 1-0 victory over Lecce on Matchday 6. Arkadiusz Milik was the hero that day versus the Salentini as his only goal stood as the difference between the two sides. ........

The Bianconeri will aim to stretch their long dominance against Torino as they are unbeaten in the last 18 Turin derbies, winning 14 of them. A victory would see them leapfrog Napoli in the Serie A standings should the Partenopei draw or suffer a defeat against Fiorentina.

Meanwhile, Torino will head into this match with not much hope as they are the side that have been defeated the most by Juventus. However, stress on tactics aiming to salvage a point is expected tomorrow from manager Ivan Juric. .........

Gatti and Milik pounce on corner kicks as Juventus topple Torino in Derby della Mole

Gatti

While it wasn’t the most exciting of Derby clashes, Juventus scored twice in the second half to beat their crosstown rivals Torino at the Allianz Stadium.

In the absence of Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic, Moise Kean spearheaded Max Allegri’s 3-5-1-1 formation, supported by Fabio Miretti.

Filip Kostic and Timothy Weah occupied the flanks while Manuel Locatelli slotted between Adrien Rabiot and Weston McKennie in the middle of the park. Federico Gatti joined Bremer and club captain Danilo at the back. ........

Luckily for the Old Lady, the restart bore positive tidings, as Gatti managed to score the opener following a major post-corner debacle, one that saw Kean injuring Bremer with a boot to the face. Following a lengthy VAR review, the goal was confirmed.

In the 62nd minute, it was Milik’s turn to nod home Kostic’s corner kick. Once again, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic abandoned his goal and darted towards the ball like a raging bull (no pun intended), but the Polish striker connected first, directing his header towards the empty net. .......

So in the end, Juventus secured a vital 2-0 win in a significant fixture. The next stop will be at the San Siro for a top clash against Milan which will occur after the international break.

Final Score: 2-0

Scorers: Gatti 47′ (J), Milik 62′ (J)

Juventus (3-5-1-1): Szczesny; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Weah, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic (Cambiaso); Miretti (Milik); Kean (Yildiz)

Juventus 2 - Torino 0: Initial reaction and random observations

A solid second half across the board allowed Juventus to continue their dominance over Torino in the Derby della Mole.

Juventus 2-0 Torino (Oct 7, 2023) Game Analysis - ESPN

The opening 45 minutes of Saturday night’s Derby della Mole were not great. It was described as “cagey” by some, but it’s pretty safe to say that both goalkeepers weren’t exactly busy or really anything close to it. It had you wondering what both managers might do at the half to try and get some sort of upperhand in the second half.

For Juventus manager Max Allegri, it was simple: bring on Arek Milik.

And boy, did that work out to be what Juve needed to look more of a threat in attack.

It took Juventus all of two minutes into the second half for Juventus to find the back of the net and break the deadlock, although very much not in any kind of way that you will see in the running for goal of the season down the road in May after a lengthy VAR review. Milik, who missed out on last weekend’s trip to Bergmao, doubled Juventus’ lead 15 minutes later with a thunderous header to allow Allegri’s squad to both take complete control of the game and also play a little more freely in a 2-0 win over Torino at the Allianz Stadium. .........

In all seriousness, though, this felt like the kind of game that Juventus needed to have after a tough couple of weeks. Did it help that Torino are, again, a team that truly struggles to both generate scoring chances and put away the chances they do get? Of course it did. When it takes you a full 90 minutes before you put something on frame, that just shows how tough it’s been for you going forward all day long.

Thankfully, Juve were able to take advantage of those Torino struggles going forward. It took a bit, but it happened. And the introduction of Milik, the first real reference point Juve had up front in the game, was what kicked things into gear. .........

Credit to Allegri for realizing the decision to start Miretti — rather than somebody like Kenan Yildiz like was rumored much of the last three days — wasn’t working and quickly pull the trigger to go with Milik, who you have to think probably would have started if he had more minutes in his legs. The first half wasn’t great for a handful of reasons. But with the introduction of Milik, Juve were a much more dangerous team in the final third and the change in personnel was a direct result of that. ........

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

  • Can we declare that Juventus’ press and high-tempo tactics from the first few weeks of the season are dead? Because this again was very much not a high press and what we saw in late-August and early-September. ........
  • The two teams combined for one shot on target in the first half. Offensive juggernauts. .......
  • Kean, overall, was much better once Milik came on and allowed him to play more of a supporting role rather than trying to lead the line. When it comes to Kean going forward, you gotta believe that’s the kind of role that suits him better than being a direct backup in the mold of Dusan Vlahovic. ........
  • It was a very brief cameo in the second half, but Kenan Yildiz showed that he is very much a piece for the future. He’s 18, just got his first call-up to Turkey’s senior national team and is already getting minutes in Serie A. Now we just sit back and watch him develop into something special because everything is telling us he can be just that.
  • Bremer took the Giorgio Chiellini-like headband one step further in this game as he added the big patch above his eye after the collision in the box right before Gatti scored. He was on the ground for a long time, too, and you gotta think he’s going to have a nice mark or two to show off the next few days after all that.
  • Bremer, Gatti and Danilo were all so solid at the back against Torino, too. It helps that Torino is not very good in attack, but we’ve also seen Juve turn bad attacking teams into ones that can hang around and find the back of the net. Not in this game. ........
  • Through the season’s first eight games, Torino has scored six goals and allowed nine. Nice.
  • OK, so now it’s the international break. Here’s to hoping that, outside of any Paul Pogba news, things are pretty quiet and don’t have us wishing that there were just games to talk about. Yeah, a quiet international break outside of PogDrama would be nice.

Juventus put Torino in a corner, win Derby della Mole with second half surge

After struggling in the first half, Juve broke through in the second on a pair of set pieces to win yet another home Derby.

Juventus v Torino FC - Serie A TIM

The Derby della Mole is always a big day on the social calendar in Turin. For Juventus, it’s perhaps slightly down the list in terms of importance — let’s be real, the Derby d’Italia is always the bigger game in this day and age — but it’s still a game that carries a heightened level of intensity.

Which is why it was surprising when the the first half of Saturday’s match against Torino turned out to be such a squib.

Neither team was any good at all in the first 45 minutes. With Juve missing their two biggest offensive threats via injury and Torino sitting their top scorer for disciplinary reasons, neither side managed much of anything. There was only one shot on target the entire first half, with Juve looking particularly disappointing, having again foregone the press that had been so successful in the season’s first weeks.

But all it took was one adjustment at halftime for Juve to kick into gear. Juve had a two-goal lead within 17 minutes of the restart, taking advantage of a pair of corners to build a 2-0 advantage that they easily held up against an ineffectual Torino attack to become the final result.

Massimiliano Allegri was missing both of his starting forwards. Dusan Vlahovic was dealing with lower back pain, while Federico Chiesa had pulled up in training midweek and it was decided not to risk him. Alex Sandro and Mattia De Sciglio were also injured, while the confirmation of Paul Pogba’s doping tests meant he was suspended for the foreseeable future. With Arkadiusz Milik only fit to start from the bench, Allegri was forced to improvise a little bit. The result was a 3-5-1-1 formation. Wojciech Szczesny was at its base, behind the trio of Federico Gatti, Bremer, and Danilo. Timothy Weah made his first start in a month at right wing-back, while Filip Kostic was on the other end. Weston McKennie was finally given a start in his natural midfield position, along with Manuel Locatelli and Adrien Rabiot. Fabio Miretti played a No. 10 role along with Moise Kean up front. ........

The next passage of play was so chaotic it almost made up for the dullness of the first half in the span of a few seconds. Kostic’s ball was whipped into the middle of the box. Milinkovic-Savic went for the punch but completely missed the ball. The ball came off Tameze’s head straight down into the six-yard box, where Kean attempted a roundhouse kick that was blocked by Rodriguez. Gatti’s rebound was also scooped out by the Swiss, but not before it had just crossed the line. The big defender headed the block back into the net to make no question, but his celebrations turned to agonized disbelief when the flag went up.

It was probably an honest mistake. The assistant on the far side had a sea of bodies between him and the ball and must have had his view blocked and assumed that the initial header down had come from Milik as opposed to Tameze, which would have rendered Kean offside. A long VAR check of almost four minutes ensued, although it may well be that the call was determined more quickly than that and that referee Davide Massa was waiting until Bremer, who had been busted open on both his forehead and cheek when Kean’s follow-through caught him, had finished receiving treatment. When he finally pointed to the center circle Gatti dashed to the Curva Sud — newly done with their long-term protests — and celebrated his first career Serie A goal.

Juventus v Torino FC - Serie A TIM

The goal seemed to break Torino’s spirit, and Juve started getting the ball toward their goal with more regularity. Just after the hour Kostic hit a beautiful cross that was met with a strong header by Milik, who bounced it a little too soon, allowing Milinkovic-Savic to parry the ball over the bar. But on the ensuing corner the Serbian again wandered aimlessly from his line, only to flap at air as Milik wended his way through the traffic to nip in front of him and slam a header in (via his own shoulder) into the net, as VMS screamed vainly for some kind of foul he thought should have been called on Kean for impeding him. .........

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6. ............

FEDERICO GATTI - 8. Persistence in an ugly situation to earn the goal, and he was absolutely excellent in defense, racking up two tackles and a game-high five clearances. His offensive chops were excellent on the other end, scoring and coming close to a second. He’s erased the memories of Sassuolo quickly.

BREMER - 7. Almost had a goal or two going forward, and won the physical battle with Zapata with ease all night long.He registered four clearances overall. Being busted open like that evoked Giorgio Chiellini so much I half expected to see him on the screen watching in person.

Juventus v Torino FC - Serie A TIM

DANILO - 7.5. All over everything Saturday night. He made two tackles, two interceptions, and three clearances, and also got credit for four key passes. That armband is on him for a reason.

TIMOTHY WEAH - 6. .........

WESTON McKENNIE - 6. .........

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 6. ..........

ADRIEN RABIOT - 6. ..........

FILIP KOSTIC - 8. Made a whopping six key passes and assisted on Milik’s goal. After a couple of appearances in which his famous crossing ability was simply not there, he found the mark on five of 11. He has two young challengers to fend off, and performances like this will help keep them at bay.

FABIO MIRETTI - 5.5. Had a pair of key passes and completed 84.2 percent of his passes, but something seemed off with him as part of the front two, which is understandable given Allegri plonked him somewhere he doesn’t usually play.

MOISE KEAN - 6. Didn’t have a ton of touches, especially in the first half, but was unlucky not to score, once on an offside call and another time on a ball cleared off the line. He worked hard and showed himself at the end of the day is gonna be a good backup option for Vlahovic.

SUBS

ARKADIUSZ MILIK - 7. Made a massive impact on the game from the moment he came on. Helped trigger the run that led to the first goal-scoring corner, then hit an excellent header for a goal of his own. He had a key pass and hit the target with all three of his shots.

Juventus v Torino FC - Serie A TIM

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. ........

KENAN YILDIZ - NR. Only on for five minutes or so, but made some really interesting plays that showcased his incredible talent and what Juve might have with him when they finally promote him full time.

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Max Allegri generally pushed the right buttons as the game went on. He recognized immediately that the team needed someone like Milik, and rather than wait too long as is sometimes his wont he made the move immediately at halftime.

But when it comes to tactics, Allegri left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately, I think it’s becoming time to declare the press that had produced so much good for Juve in the early part of the season is dead. It’s been three games since the loss to Sassuolo, and it’s clear that Allegri has decided in the wake of that game to go back to the negative, passive tactics that have defined his second stint with the club.

It was straight-up infuriating to watch Juventus defending and countering on their own field, in a game when the ultras decided to show up and make noise, against a team that had voluntarily benched its own best attacker and was was missing its top two defensive players. The second half was a little better, but working on such a razor-thin margin is going to eventually come back to bite them against better teas, and as I have said numerous times since Allegri returned that coaching not to lose is going to eventually see the team do exactly that, especially against the league’s better teams. It’s time to let Juve loose again—we saw the result against Lazio when they do.

LOOKING AHEAD

The October international break is upon us. Juve will resume play on October 22nd against AC Milan at the San Siro. Milan will be without two of its best players, Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez, due to suspensions.

Allegri: Juventus must get back to the normality of winning games

Coach’s comments after beating Torino again and driving Juric to tears

Juventus v Torino FC - Serie A TIM

Juventus won yet another Derby della Mole, somewhat comfortably dispatching Torino 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Federico Gatti and Arkadiusz Milik.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri has been dubbed the ‘Master of Derbies’ picking up his 13th in his managerial career.

“I have trained some very strong teams that allowed me to do that.

“Toro were very aggressive in the first 25 minutes, then we got a bit more organised. Fabio Miretti did good work, as I needed a player between the lines, then after the break having Milik and Yildiz we knew that we could change the game.

“It was a mature performance, so we are improving in that sense, and I am happy.” .......

“We made some wrong choices, above all when in control of the game and 2-0 up. We should’ve gone for the shot to finish off the moves and not allow Torino to stay in the game when they were struggling.

“The same thing happened in Bergamo, they opened up the midfielders quite wide and we struggled to close them down. When we moved to a more organised 4-4-2, we allowed them very little after that and above all were more aggressive.” ......

“The objective remains the same. That doesn’t preclude us from looking at other things, because naturally we are Juventus. We must keep our feet on the ground and bring back what for many years was normality at Juventus, in other words winning games.

“We still need to keep reminding the players what they need to do, especially as after the break for international duty we will have a game against Milan.” .........

His thoughts on Paul Pogba’s second sample also testing positive?

“On a human level, I am very close to him. I knew him since he was a young boy. It is a great pity for all of football to lose a player who was special. It is a difficult moment for him and we can only wish him the best.” .........

Milik insists the win against Torino

is a very important one

Milik

Arkadiusz Milik is delighted to have come off the bench to seal Juventus’ victory against Torino this evening.

The Polish striker was not fit enough to start, having only recovered from injury during the week and had to start from the bench.

However, he made an important contribution when he came on, as his goal sealed the win for the Black and Whites and took the sting out of Torino’s effort to get back in the fixture. ........

“Very important goal, it led us to have more calm. It gave us time to relax a bit. I wasn’t in top condition but the team is fine and this victory is very important.” .........

Gatti celebrates Juventus fighting spirit after their win against Torino

Player Ratings: Juventus 2-0 Torino - Gatti's revenge, Vanja's errors - Football Italia

Federico Gatti has praised his Juventus teammates for their resilience and teamwork in the victory over Torino this evening. Juventus has faced an inconsistent season, and they entered the match against Torino following a goalless draw against Atalanta.

In the absence of key players like Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus might have appeared weaker on paper than expected. However, the team managed to secure a crucial victory with goals from Gatti and Arkadiusz Milik. .........

“There is the desire to fight together, we are proving it, a crazy group, we fight for every ball. A heartfelt match like this is too beautiful”.

Adding: “Today we fought for every ball, they put 3 weight strikers on it, it was difficult. A great performance, whoever came in gave us a hand, 3 fundamental points.” .........

Bremer “apologizes” to Chiellini for stealing signature head bandage

Kan een afbeelding zijn van 2 mensen, mensen die volleyballen, mensen die voetbal spelen en de tekst 'bremer Juventus Stadium @giorgiochiellini ochiellin scusa l'ho preso in prestito.'

In a light-hearted social media post, Juventus defender Gleison Bremer apologized to club icon Giorgio Chiellini for stealing his signature head bandage.

During last night’s 2-0 win over Torino, the Brazilian defender ate a boot in the face courtesy of his teammate Moise Kean. This forced him to don a bandage for the rest of the match.

This scene reminded the fans of Chiellini who often had to sport a bandage after colliding either with an opponent or a teammate. .........
