Madrid, 17 December 2024 – A22 Sports Management (“A22”) today announced the submission of a proposal to UEFA and FIFA to obtain official recognition for its new cross-border European club football competitions.  Under the December 2023 ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (“CJEU”), any competition where qualification is inclusive and meritocratic, and which complies with the overall match calendar can be officially established.

The proposal incorporates feedback received from a broad spectrum of football stakeholders over several years and in particular following the CJEU ruling A key feature is a revised qualification system in which club participation is based on annual, domestic league performance. The proposal is also fully aligned with the UEFA definition of the “European Sports Model”.

The revised annual qualification system was developed in large part as a result of discussions with clubs, leagues and other parties. These discussions increased significantly after the CJEU ruling as it created a more constructive environment for open dialogue.

Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, stated: “A22 is focused on ensuring the sustainable growth and development of football. Our extensive engagement with key stakeholders revealed a number of pressing challenges facing the sport including increasing subscription costs for fans, an overloaded player calendar, insufficient investment in women’s football, and dissatisfaction with the format and governance of the current pan-European competitions. Our proposal is designed to directly address these challenges.”

Central to this vision is the Unify platform, a direct-to-fan streaming service announced in December 2023 that will host all live matches. Unify will offer both free, ad-supported viewing of matches as well as affordable premium subscriptions. It will also dramatically improve the viewing experience at home by eliminating the need for multiple subscriptions while offering fans the advanced features they have come to expect. Finally, it will directly connect clubs with their global fanbases for the first time. Reflecting the importance of this platform to the project’s mission, the proposed A22 competitions have been named the “Unify League”.

Mr. Reichart said that “Now is the time for all stakeholders, including UEFA and FIFA, to bring real innovation that prioritizes fan experience and affordability, player welfare and match competitiveness. We remain committed to fostering relationships built on mutual respect, transparency, and constructive dialogue. The fans, players, clubs, leagues and other groups that make up the football community deserve nothing less.”
