Cristiano Ronaldo made history and won the Supercoppa for Juventus, along with a last-gasp Alvaro Morata goal, but Lorenzo Insigne fired a Napoli penalty wide.

This was the traditional clash between the Scudetto and Coppa Italia holders, but also a replay of the Coppa Italia Final played in June, when Napoli beat Juve on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The trophy is to be assigned after 90 minutes, extra time or penalties.

The Bianconeri were without Paulo Dybala, Merih Demiral, Matthijs de Ligt and Alex Sandro, but Juan Cuadrado was given the all-clear from COVID-19 this morning and thrown directly into the starting XI. The Partenopei missed Victor Osimhen and Fabian Ruiz, with Dries Mertens not 100 per cent fit.

The first huge chance was for Napoli on 29 minutes when Diego Demme’s cross found a Chucky Lozano diving header from six yards, Szczesny making a desperate reaction save.

Federico Chiesa had an ankle problem, so Federico Bernardeschi came on at half-time and almost scored within a minute. He got his toes to the Weston McKennie low cross from point-blank range, but David Ospina managed to smother it right on the line.

Juve began to swarm and the pressure paid off, as first Manolas with a shinned clearance risked an own goal, then on the resulting corner it bounced off Tiemoue Bakayoko, turning into an ideal assist for Ronaldo to fire in from six yards.

It was an historic goal, his 760th in official senior games between club and country, surpassing the record of 759 set by Josef Bican.

Dries Mertens came on and made an immediate difference, as he snuck up behind McKennie and the American kicked his ankle instead of the ball. After viewing it on VAR, the penalty was inevitably. Insigne stepped up for what would’ve been his 100th Napoli goal, but sent Szczesny the wrong way and put the spot-kick wide.

It still wasn’t over, as in stoppages a deflection almost got it level, but Szczesny stuck out a foot to parry from point-blank range when Lozano's effort ricocheted off Giorgio Chiellini.

Juve then went on the counter from the Napoli corner with Cuadrado and Alvaro Morata turned into the empty net with the last kick of the game.

Pirlo 'joy' at first coaching trophy

Pirlo's Supercoppa joy 'more beautiful' than as a player

Jan 20, 2020

Andrea Pirlo celebrates his first trophy as a coach, beating Napoli to the Supercoppa, explains why Juan Cuadrado was in such good shape and shrugging off Juventus criticism.

This is the first piece of silverware in his coaching career, even if he’s won it all as a player, beating former teammate Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli 2-0.

“I feel great joy, lifting my first trophy as a coach is different, I think even better than as a player, because I am leading such a great squad and at an historic club. It’s wonderful,” Pirlo told RAI Sport.

“It’s rare that two teams play well in a Final, the important thing is to win. When you play with this determination, then luck can go on your side.

“We wanted to prove that we are not the team seen against Inter, so when you play with this grit, determination and attitude, you draw luck your way.”

Pirlo was up against former teammate Rino Gattuso, who spoke of the many pranks they’d play in the old days.

“We are two coaches on two important benches, it’s a different type of work now. I am disappointed for Rino, but happy for me. We were too concentrated for joking around on the touchline tonight!” ..........

Pirlo uses Juventus 'enthusiasm'

Juventus-Bologna, Pirlo in conferenza stampa: seguila in diretta

Jan 23, 2020

Andrea Pirlo hopes Juventus can ride their Supercoppa enthusiasm against Bologna, has some positive injury news and embraces the tactical versatility of his players.

The last week has been full of ups and downs for the Bianconeri, as they lost 2-0 to Inter in Serie A, then beat Napoli by the same scoreline to win the Supercoppa.

“It helps to win and the Supercoppa gave us great enthusiasm and euphoria, which allowed us to train well despite the fatigue over the last few days. Our minds are already on future objectives and we are ready for tomorrow’s match,” said the coach in his press conference.

“It doesn’t change my enthusiasm, as I’ve felt the same from Day One. Winning a trophy doesn’t change anything for me, I want to win more.

“We’ve had some ups and downs, just like every other team this season. It’s due to the packed fixture list and lack of preparation. Everyone is feeling mental fatigue, it’s not easy to stay concentrated for 90 minutes every three days, but are working on it.” .............

Matthijs de Ligt is back on the bench, but Dejan Kulusevski again partners Cristiano Ronaldo against Bologna, who look to Musa Barrow.

Andrea Pirlo won his first trophy as a coach this week, beating Napoli 2-0 in Wednesday’s Supercoppa clash, a complete turnaround in fortunes and mood from the 2-0 Serie A defeat to Inter.

With Milan and Inter both stalling yesterday, it’s an opportunity to close the gap on the leaders.

Matthijs de Ligt has recovered from COVID-19 and is on the bench to begin with, while Merih Demiral is also back from injury.

Only Alex Sandro and Paulo Dybala remain on the absentee list now. .............

Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, Chiellini, Danilo; McKennie, Arthur, Bentancur, Bernardeschi; Kulusevski, Ronaldo

HT 1-0: Arthur opens Juve account

Immagine

Jan 24, 2020

Arthur’s deflected strike has given Juventus the half-time lead over Bologna, but both teams had penalty appeals waved away.

There was controversy in the opening minutes, as Juan Cuadrado went down under a very risky Emanuel Vignato tackle. Although he seemed to get more ankle than ball, the referee and VAR decided not to intervene.

Juve took the lead with a stroke of luck, as Arthur slipped while taking a hopeful shot from 20 metres out, it took a massive deflection off Jerdy Schouten to completely wrong-foot Lukasz Skorupski.

Federico Bernardeschi got into a good position and had several options open to him, but bizarrely chose a wayward lob.

Skorupski performed a stunning double save on both Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike and the Bernardeschi rebound, then Cuadrado wasted a counter-attack by firing wide one-on-one with the goalkeeper. ...............

Juventus 2-0 Bologna: Bianconeri at the double

Juventus got the better of Bologna with a deflected Arthur shot and Weston McKennie header, but also thanked Wojciech Szczesny saves.

Skorupski performed a stunning double save on both Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike and the Bernardeschi rebound, then Cuadrado wasted a counter-attack by firing wide one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Skorupski got a hand to Cuadrado’s cross-shot, taking it away from Weston McKennie, who was ready to tap in from a yard.

Wojciech Szczesny needed a sensational reaction save on a diving header from six yards. Bizarrely, it was from his teammate Cuadrado, who was about to score a remarkable own goal.

Not to be out-done, Skorupski had his gloves stung by Cuadrado at the near post, then parried with his body from Alvaro Morata just moments after the Spaniard came off the bench.

From the resulting corner, a series of jumps in the area allowed McKennie to get a free header from eight yards to double Juve’s lead.

McKennie almost completed a brace, his volley from a Ronaldo cross denied by a desperate Skorupski save from close range. ..........

Pirlo: 'Juve should be clinical’

Pirlo: Important for Juventus to bring the intensity to the game - Black & White & Read All Over

Jan 24, 2020

Andrea Pirlo believes Juventus should have been more clinical against Bologna and praises Giorgio Chiellini: ‘He hadn’t played four games in a row for a long time.'

“It was important to bring intensity to the game, which we above all did in the first half and could’ve killed the game, but if you don’t finish it off, then the match will always be in the balance,” Pirlo told DAZ.

“Bologna attacked us very high, we did well to make the most of the spaces they left us,” he continued.

“We talked, he prefers to play in a slightly more advanced role and leave the defensive work to others. He has great vision, keeps the ball and sets the tempo when we have to pass our way out from the opposition press.” .............

“It’s normal, we’d like to always dominate the games, today we had 20 shots on target and we should have killed off the game earlier.

“Giorgio’s [Chiellini] return was important, he hadn’t played four games in a row for long time, Szczesny is a great goalkeeper and is always ready.”

Coppa Italia: Juventus sweep SPAL aside

Jan 27, 2020

Juventus swept SPAL aside 4-0 with Alvaro Morata, Gianluca Frabotta, Dejan Kulusevski and Federico Chiesa goals to set up a Coppa Italia semi-final with Inter.

The Bianconeri will face Inter in the two-legged semi-final next month.

Teenagers Radu Dragusin and debutant Nicolò Fagioli came in, with Dejan Kulusevski and Alvaro Morata forming a new partnership upfront. Matthijs de Ligt made his first start since contracting COVID and Gigi Buffon started the day before his 43rd birthday. SPAL were the only remaining Serie B side in the Coppa, having eliminated Crotone and Sassuolo.

Gianluca Frabotta’s angled drive flashed wide and Morata’s powerful strike tested Etrit Berisha at the near post, but the deadlock was broken when Francesco Vicari caught Adrien Rabiot, who had originally been booked for simulation. VAR shows although perhaps the Frenchman was looking for the contact, it was still a foul and Morata converted the spot-kick.

The second goal was created by Kulusevski, who turned Luca Ranieri inside out, pulled back to the edge of the box for a Gianluca Frabotta rocket. It was his first senior goal for Juventus. .........

Rabiot drilled inches off target and Kulusevski completed the rout, firing in after Federico Chiesa pounced on a terrible Nenad Tomovic error.

Chiesa came inches away from a goal himself, the curler skimming the far post. He did get it with the last kick of the game, literally walking the ball into the net after pouncing on a rebound from Cosimo Da Graca's effort.

Pirlo: 'More clubs should have U23 team'

221900903-66ba6453-946b-46b8-81ca-4c769f

Jan 27, 2020

Andrea Pirlo saw the right Juventus attitude against SPAL, is ‘happy’ to face Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-final and praises the resources of an Under-23 team.

The Bianconeri made short work of Serie B side SPAL, with goals from Alvaro Morata, Gianluca Frabotta, Dejan Kulusevski and Federico Chiesa.

“Our objective was to get through and we did it against a team that has done well this season in both the Coppa Italia and their league,” Pirlo told RAI Sport.

“It was important that we take them on with conviction and we did that from the first minute.”

The coach has made very good use of the youth players, especially because Juventus are the only club in Italy who took advantage of the rule change allowing for an Under-23 team to play in Serie C.

“Juve were the first and only club to create a B-Team and I think it was a great move for the development of these players. It’s one thing to pluck players from the youth academy, quite another to get them from a team currently in Serie C. I believe other clubs ought to open their minds a bit more.”

Teenager Nicolò Fagioli was given his senior Juventus debut this evening.

“He’s an interesting lad, he’s been training with us for some time. He arrived with me as a trequartista, but I believe he can also work as a playmaker and has good vision.” ........

Pirlo: 'I respect mister Ranieri very much’

Pirlo: "Chiesa e Morata titolari con la Samp, Fagioli resta da noi" - Jmania.it

Jan 29, 2020

Andrea Pirlo says Weston McKennie has room for improvement and insists Cristiano Ronaldo will take responsibility for disobeying COVID restrictions.

The Old Lady travel to Genoa to face Sampdoria tomorrow.

“Sampdoria are a good team, they are living a good moment. They have players with great qualities and a deep squad too,” the Juventus coach said at a press conference.

“It will be a difficult game, like it always happens when you face the teams of Mister Ranieri. I respect him so much,” he added.

“Today everyone should train with in group, except Dybala who is still recovering. We’ll evaluate him day by day, he still feels pain at his knee sometimes, but hopefully we are on the right track.

“We have many important games ahead of us, we’ll need to recover energies and decide who will play.

“Chiesa is feeling well, he has recovered from an ankle injury and he will start tomorrow,” Pirlo revealed. ..........

Juventus pair Alvaro Morata with Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Chiesa, while Sampdoria use Fabio Quagliarella and Keita Balde Diao.

Both teams are finding their form recently, as the Bianconeri won the Italian Supercup against Napoli, closed the gap on the Serie A leaders – with a game in hand – and booked their spot in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final with Inter.

Dejan Kulusevski is suspended, with Paulo Dybala still out injured, but Matthijs de Ligt and Alex Sandro have recovered from COVID-19 now and are both benched.

Morata partners Ronaldo, with Chiesa and Weston McKennie taking the wide roles. ..........

Federico Chiesa finished off a well-worked team move to give Juventus the half-time lead away to Sampdoria.

Juve took the lead with their first genuine scoring opportunity. It was a well-worked move, as Cristiano Ronaldo spread it down the right for Alvaro Morata, who rolled across the six-yard box for Federico Chiesa’s tap-in.

CR7 was clear on goal from a Rodrigo Bentancur ball over the top, but was denied by a sensational Maya Yoshida sliding tackle inside the penalty area.

Federico Chiesa’s early goal and a stoppage-time Aaron Ramsey counter-attack proved the difference, as Juventus did the bare minimum to take all three points against Sampdoria.

The two old men on the pitch showed they’ve still got it, as Quagliarella – who turns 38 tomorrow – managed a control and volley on the turn, but Giorgio Chiellini made a sensational acrobatic block at the near post.

Juve spent almost the entire second half trying to protect their 1-0 lead under heavy rain. It worked, because as Samp were pouring forward in stoppages, Ronaldo’s long ball sent Cuadrado sprinting forward and the Colombian pretended to shoot, but instead rolled across for unmarked Ramsey to prod home.

Chiellini: 'Juve should've killed game'

Sampdoria-Juventus 0-2: highlights video gol e pagelle - Jmania.it

Jan 30, 2020

Giorgio Chiellini admits Juventus ‘should’ve killed it off earlier,’ but was pleased with the determination shown against Sampdoria.

Federico Chiesa’s early goal and a stoppage-time Aaron Ramsey counter-attack sealed the 2-0 result at Marassi.

“I said before the game that the important thing was to show consistency and desire to win every match,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a tough match, a Juve performance, although one we should’ve killed off earlier. I think we’ve improved a lot in January and taken home largely all the results.”

The captain isn’t wrong, as apart from the 2-0 defeat to Inter, they have won eight games, including the Italian Supercoppa.

“The next three weeks are going to be jam-packed, we’ll play every three days, but we are ready and eager to get into it.

Pirlo: 'Juventus taking shape now'

Serie A, Sampdoria-Juventus -Pirlo: "La Juve cresce. Ronaldo? Importante anche se non segna" - Eurosport

Jan 30, 2020

Andrea Pirlo is starting to see his Juventus vision take shape after the 2-0 win at Sampdoria, while Federico Chiesa is settling after the ‘big step up’ from Fiorentina.

The Italy international scored the opening goal at Marassi, while Aaron Ramsey turned in the Juan Cuadrado counter in stoppages.

“Chiesa is a young player who joined a big club, facing international matches for the first time, and it was a big step up for him, so he was a little shy at first. He’s settled now, gained in confidence and has improved a great deal,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s good that he is finishing off the moves that we attack, and he ought to do it more often, making the most of his runs from deep.”

The second half was spent largely protecting the 1-0 lead, almost parking the bus, as Juve seemed content to rest on their laurels.

“It’s a pity we didn’t kill off the game in the first half, as we had the chances to double our lead. It’s only normal with a one-goal gap that Sampdoria would push harder, but Wojciech Szczesny didn’t make any particularly difficult saves. We got the second goal eventually, although we should’ve done it earlier.” .........

Pirlo: ‘Juve can’t relax’

Andrea Pirlo says Juventus know Antonio Conte ‘very well’ and reveals Aaron Ramsey won’t be available against Inter due to a muscle strain.

The Old Lady travel at the Giuseppe Meazza for a the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Tuesday.

"I want to see a team aware of its strength. We play the first round and it is not a decisive game. We must be good at managing it,” Pirlo told Juventus Tv.

“We are going to change something, Buffon will start in goal, Ramsey is out because of a muscle strain, but we hope he will available on Saturday.

“This group of players still has desire to win and ambition is crucial.” ........

What kind of game does he expect?

“The usual game from Inter. We know their coach very well and we are prepared to what could happen. They defend very well and are dangerous on counter attacks and with runs into open spaces, we must be very careful.

Inter rely on Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal for the Coppa Italia semi-final, while Juventus have Dejan Kulusevski with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The first leg kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 GMT, with the return in Turin on February 9.

The Nerazzurri are forced to do without suspended Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi, who accumulated enough yellow cards in the tournament to trigger a ban.

They were both booked in the stormy 2-1 quarter-final win over Milan, so Alexis Sanchez steps in as the partner to Lautaro Martinez. ........

Juventus have Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey out injured, but Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are both rested for Matthijs de Ligt with Merih Demiral.

Alex Sandro gets his first start since recovering from COVID, but Federico Chiesa is benched with Alvaro Morata.

Dejan Kulusevski is instead chosen alongside Ronaldo, with 43-year-old Gigi Buffon in goal.

These teams met only 16 days ago, with Inter winning the Serie A edition of the Derby d’Italia 2-0 here.

Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Brozovic, Vidal, Young; Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Sanchez

HT 1-2: Ronaldo turns Inter around

Cristiano Ronaldo completed the turnaround to give Juventus a 2-1 half-time lead away to Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

These sides met in Serie A just 16 days ago, the Nerazzurri winning 2-0 at San Siro, but this was the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final, with the decider in Turin on February 9. Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi were suspended, with the visitors missing Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey.

Inter took the lead with a well-worked team move, as Nicolò Barella got down the right and squared the pass for Lautaro Martinez, who managed to get in front of Matthijs de Ligt to squirm the finish under Gigi Buffon. It was the perfect way for the striker to celebrate becoming a father with the birth of Nina just yesterday.

Juventus were awarded a penalty following a VAR on-field review for a slight Ashley Young tug on Juan Cuadrado’s arm. Cristiano Ronaldo converted by blasting into the roof of the net.

Inter then gifted the second goal to the Bianconeri with a double howler. Alessandro Bastoni and Samir Handanovic did not communicate, the goalkeeper came outside the box, but Cristiano Ronaldo pounced on the defender to steal the ball and place a snooker shot in off the inside of the far post of the empty net.

Pirlo: 'Juventus know our strength'

Immagine

Feb 2, 2021

Andrea Pirlo assures this was the real Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-final, and not the one that lost to Inter just 16 days ago. ‘We know our strength.’

When Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring, there were concerns it’d be a repeat of the 2-0 Inter victory in Serie A just 16 days ago.

However, a penalty for the Ashley Young shirt tug on Juan Cuadrado and Cristiano Ronaldo pouncing on a defensive howler turned the game around.

“We weren’t ourselves against Inter in the league, that was a slip-up, but it was also a valuable lesson and we worked on the mistakes that were made in that game,” Pirlo told RAI Sport.

“This is just the first round, we haven’t achieved anything yet. What this does prove is that if we are fully concentrated, it becomes difficult for anyone against us. We know our strength.

“It’s not easy to maintain this intensity when playing practically every day. I saw a great reaction after going behind.”

The second leg will be in Turin on February 9, with a 2-1 away lead under their belts. ..........

Pirlo: 'Roma among the best in Italy'

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor pirlo pre juventus roma

Feb 5, 2021

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo called Cristiano Ronaldo ‘a hero’, expects great football from Roma and pointed at the defeat to Inter as the turning point.

The Old Lady host Roma in Serie A on Saturday and Pirlo said his men must ‘make few mistakes’ to succeed against the Giallorossi.

“It will be a match against a team that, in my opinion, plays some of the best football in Italy,” Pirlo said at a press conference.

“They have great players, and we will have to be focused on the counters. We have to make few mistakes.”

Pirlo confirmed Paulo Dybala and Aaron Ramsey are not ready to return against the Giallorossi and said the Inter defeat helped the Bianconeri ‘mentally’.

“We have improved a lot mentally,” he added. “The defeat at San Siro surely helped us to understand that we always need to be focused.

“We are improving on all aspects. Unfortunately, we have little time to train, but by making some more videos, we could perhaps catch something.

“Dybala is still out, Ramsey did something with us, but they are not available.”

Cristiano Ronaldo turns 36 today and Pirlo praised the Portuguese.

“I knew about the professional, but seeing him train every day was a surprise,” Pirlo said. “He still has great passion, he has fun.

“If you still have this desire, it means you are a hero. He has it, like [Gigi] Buffon, [Giorgio] Chiellini, [Leo] Bonucci…” ...........

Juventus look to Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata and Federico Chiesa in this head-to-head with Roma for third place, but Edin Dzeko only has a spot on the bench.

There is only one point separating the teams going in, although Juve also have a game in hand to be played against Napoli.

The Bianconeri restored their confidence and beat Inter 2-1 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final, with the decider on Tuesday evening.

Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended, with Paulo Dybala injured, so Morata partners Ronaldo the day after the Portugal international turned 36.

Chiesa and Alex Sandro take the wide roles, with Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in defence. ...........

Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; McKennie, Arthur, Rabiot, Chiesa; Morata, Ronaldo

Roma: Pau Lopez; Mancini, Ibanez, Kumbulla; Karsdorp, Villar, Cristante, Veretout, Spinazzola; Mkhitaryan, Borja Mayoral

HT 1-0: Ronaldo breaks Roma defences

Cristiano Ronaldo struck a day after his 36th birthday to give Juventus the half-time lead, but Roma have had more of the ball in Turin.

The opening goal came largely out of nowhere, as Alex Sandro spun away from Bryan Cristante, Alvaro Morata laid it off to Cristiano Ronaldo, who inside the D had the time to stop the ball dead with the sole of his boot and place a snooker shot into the far bottom corner with his weaker left foot. It was the first goal he scored as a 36-year-old. ...........

At the other end, Ronaldo nearly doubled his tally, as a strike took a big deflection off Marash Kumbulla to bounce off the underside of the bar and back out.

Gianluca Mancini bundled wide on another Roma corner from close range, but the Giallorossi put together numerous corners without making them count. They also had more possession, yet Pau Lopez had to make the save on a Ronaldo half-volley from a long ball.
