It was a very hard-fought win for the Bianconeri, although they did hit the woodwork twice with Federico Bernardeschi and Morata. “We had intended to start with a different attitude, but we know there can be difficulties in games that seem on paper to be simple. We were too superficial at the start and had to chase the game,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. “Our first press wasn’t vehement, which is normal after so many matches to lose a little intensity, but the important thing was not to get stretched out and allow counter-attacks. The Bianconeri were held to their fifth draw of the Serie A season, so if we exclude the game awarded by default against Napoli due to COVID, they’ve won only three out of eight rounds. Alvaro Morata opened the scoring yet again, but Gaetano Letizia’s volley got Benevento back on track for 1-1. Morata was then sent off after the final whistle for dissent and will be suspended for at least one game, missing next week’s Derby della Mole with Torino. “We controlled the first half, had the chances to kill off the game, but still haven’t worked out how to read the various moments of the match,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. “We had a corner and took it quickly on the stroke of half-time, but we should’ve controlled the situation and held out until the break. It’s not the first time we have conceded just before the break. “At the end, we got a bit chaotic and lost our cool, we didn’t manage to turn the chances into goals.” Did Cristiano Ronaldo really need to be left at home or could he at least have been on the bench in Benevento? “He had a slight problem midweek and wanted to play in the Champions League anyway. After international duty, it was natural he’d need some rest. Ronaldo is an added value, but we must try to play our game even in his absence. “It happens when you have a lot of players on international duty and also play the Champions League, we’re hardly the only club in this situation. “Real Madrid were dependent on Ronaldo, he is a catalyst for goals and a focal point for moves, so it’s only to be expected he will be a central figure and many moves go through him.” ......... Alvaro Morata gave Juventus the lead on the 20-minute mark, taking on his marker and rattling a super left-footed effort into the bottom far corner. I Bianconeri looked fairly untroubled by their hosts, until a Gaetano Letizia volley snaked into the corner of the net on the stroke of half-time. ......... Wojciech Szczesny (GK) - 7/10 - Pulled off a stunning save late in the first half, only for Benevento to score from the resulting corner. Little chance with a shot that sneaked in at the back stick. Showed some real minerals to pull off a double dummy in the second half.Juan Cuadrado (RB) - 5/10 - Forced into making a lot of recovery tackles, and caught upfield on occasion. Gave the ball away a lot in the second half. So many simple passes misplaced. Lucky to only receive a yellow for a hefty shove.Danilo (CB) - 6/10 - Mr. Dependable. Seems fully adapted to the centre-back life, defending his zone well and building attacks from the back.Matthijs de Ligt (CB) - 8/10 - The monster is back, baby. Injury hasn't slowed De Ligt down, and he is as powerful and commanding as ever. Won plenty of tackles and stayed strong as his opponents came forward, including a huge second-half block.Gianluca Frabotta (LB) - 6/10 - Looks a reliable defender, without really sparkling or standing out from the crowd. Got beaten by his man a couple of times in the second half as Benevento began to grow into the game. Federico Chiesa (RM) - 7/10 - Picked out Morata with a pinpoint ball from the right flank. Beautiful stuff. Looked much more comfortable out wide than central.Adrien Rabiot (CM) - 7/10 - Executed an insane bit of control with his head in the first half, which almost resulted in a goal. A dominant figure in the middle, winning possession and launching Juve forward. Influence on proceedings waned as the game progressed.Arthur (CM) - 6/10 - Pulled the strings in the middle, switching play from side to side and always providing an option for his teammates. Presented the ball back to Benevento with a stray touch for their equaliser. Subbed.Aaron Ramsey (LM) - 6/10 - Playing out of position on that left side, and couldn't occupy his usual spaces. Should have buried a first-half chance, but fired straight at the keeper. Subbed. Alvaro Morata (ST) - 7/10 - This man just loves Turin, doesn't he? Morata looks a new player back at Juve, and his clinical strike which kicked off the scoring proved it. Five star weak foot. Couldn't add to his tally, though. The Bianconeri had already qualified for the Round of 16, although first place was still potentially up for grabs from Barcelona. Giorgio Chiellini and Gigi Buffon were out injured, with Danilo, Juan Cuadrado and Paulo Dybala rested, but Leonardo Bonucci returned. This game was historic, as it is the first in the Champions League with a female referee, French official Stephanie Frappart. Federico Chiesa’s snapshot was deflected wide and a series of corners created dangerous situations, but the deadlock was finally broken on 21 minutes. Alvaro Morata sprung the offside trap and Alex Sandro whipped in the cross from the left for a rare Chiesa header from seven yards. Juventus doubled their lead with an historic goal, the 750th in Cristiano Ronaldo’s career. It was certainly not one of his best, because Chiesa flew down the right, rolled across, the goalkeeper parried it on to Morata’s shin from point-blank range and Ronaldo tapped in the loose ball undisturbed. Morata got his own goal soon after, a delicate first touch to commit the defender, leaving a gap to fire home from 12 yards. It was yet another Chiesa assist from his run down the right. Federico Chiesa, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata got the goals in Turin, although they were already qualified for the Round of 16. “I’ve never seen a team dominate for 90 minutes, especially not in the Champions League, so there is going to be some defending to do,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia. “I am pleased with the performance and we had the right psychological approach. Even if we are already qualified, we must always play to win, so I saw the right team performance and it was a positive sign we needed for ourselves.” Pirlo’s comments yesterday, that criticism meant he was ‘annoying’ some people, stirred up some controversy. “I know that I am young and need to improve, so I try to carry on with my work one day at a time. 'There are many emotions involved'. The Bianconeri responded to the critics in the Champions League and are still unbeaten in Serie A 2020-21, but they sit six points behind League leaders Milan and must bounce back from a surprising 1-1 draw with Benevento from last weekend. “This is an important derby for the two sets of fans, it’s always tense,” Pirlo told Juventus TV. “It’s nice to play, there are many emotions involved. “I was lucky enough to be part of it several times, to win and score important goals.” The Old Lady arrive from a 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League. “Now, we try to recover some strength from the game the other night,” he said. “We mentally prepare for an important game. “Torino are built well and have an excellent coach. Neither of the Turin teams are doing well so far this season, but there are reports coach Marco Giampaolo could be sacked if the Granata lose heavily today. It is a return to the bench for Giampaolo, three weeks after his COVID-19 diagnosis. Andrea Pirlo is under some pressure too, having stuttered to draws with minnows like Crotone and Benevento. Alvaro Morata starts his two-match ban, so Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo must lead the way. The Derby della Mole found both teams stuttering in Serie A, as the Bianconeri were fresh off a draw with Benevento and the Granata had the worst defensive record in the division. Giorgio Chiellini, Merih Demiral and Gigi Buffon were injured, with Alvaro Morata suspended, so Paulo Dybala stepped in. Toro missed Simone Verdi, Nicola Murru and Daniele Baselli, but coach Marco Giampaolo returned three weeks after his COVID diagnosis. It was Torino who took the shock lead in the ninth minute. Wilfried Singo earned a corner with a lovely twist and turn, from that set play, Soualiho Meite flicked it on and Nicolas Nkoulou was quickest to react by prodding in from six yards. The Juventus defence was caught napping. It was almost 2-0 soon after, as Simone Zaza sprung the offside trap in midfield and Wojciech Szczesny had to make the save one-on-one. After Linetty wasted a promising counter-attack, Belotti acrobatically volleyed over the bar. A Ricardo Rodriguez free kick was charged down, but Juventus thought they had equalised on 56 minutes when a corner was cleared to the edge of the area for Juan Cuadrado to blast in. However, after viewing it on VAR, the referee decided Leonardo Bonucci’s offside position was interfering with play, as he prevented Lyanco from getting to it for an interception. On the resulting corner, Juve scored, as it as taken short for Cuadrado to sweep in the cross, finding substitute Weston McKennie for a free header from six yards to equalise. It turned into a siege from then on and Toro confirmed their inability to hold onto leads, conceding more late goals than any other Serie A side this season. Dybala thought he had to score with a volley from six yards on Ronaldo’s cross, but Lyanco somehow managed to get the block and avoid scoring an own goal in the process. However, on that corner, Juventus essentially repeated the equaliser to take the lead. It was another short corner, floated Cuadrado cross and Bonucci with the free header from essentially the same position as McKennie. It was redemption for the defender, whose offside position had caused the earlier Cuadrado goal to be disallowed. .................... However, both their goals late on were very similar, headers from Juan Cuadrado floated crosses to the back post by Weston McKennie and Leonardo Bonucci. “It’s more exhausting as a player, very different as a coach, but the feeling of victory is the same,” smiled Pirlo on Sky Sport Italia. “When you lose every challenge, it becomes difficult to control the game. We were too static, we never filled the box when we did manage to find some width to put a cross in and it’s difficult against a five-man defence. “We remembered after the break that the Juventus DNA is to put in heart and sacrifice. Once you can pin Toro back into their own half, it becomes easier to get the breakthrough. ........
