Szczesny, with his arms fully outstretched, caught an inadvertent elbow from Torino substitute Adam Masina, causing the Polish keeper to crash to the ground in obvious pain. About 12 hours after the final whistle sounded at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, we found out that what we expected to be the diagnosis after the big collision was indeed true — Szczesny broke his noise and had to undergo surgery to put things back in proper alignment, Juventus said in a statement on their website Sunday morning.

 

“The surgery went perfectly successful,” it read.

 

Szczesny is only expected to miss Friday’s trip to Sardinia against Cagliari. If that’s the case, that means Mattia Perin would play in back-to-back games for just the second time this season as he will make his usual Coppa Italia start the following Tuesday against Lazio, with Szczesny likely returning to the starting lineup on May 5 when Juve face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. ...............

The way Juventus’ goalkeeper situation appears from the outside looking in at the beginning of June, there’s only two seats available for three very talented players. Juventus are expected to announce the signing of Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio, the top keeper in Serie A this past season, rather soon, with the top two names on the depth chart in Turin very much looking like they’re heading into major decision-making times about their respective careers.

 

That’s especially true for the man with No. 1 on the back of his jersey and started all but three of Juventus’ Serie A fixture during the 2023-24 campaign.

 

According to Tuttosport on Tuesday, Wojciech Szczesny has received a very lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia recently, with a reported annual salary in the neighborhood of €15 million. The thing is, that is reportedly not really something Szczesny wants to accept. That’s because it’s reported that Szczesny isn’t exactly interested in moving to the Saudi Pro League this summer, instead preferring to stay at Juventus — where his contract runs until 2025 — or, if he were to leave, play in Europe.

 

Szczesny is currently one of Juventus’ highest earners at €6.5 million net a season.

 

You’ll notice I have yet to mention the third goalkeeper in this potential merry-go-round, and that is Mattia Perin. When the Di Gregorio rumors first started, it was somewhat expected that Perin would be the one who’s leaving this summer because he would want to seek regular playing time as his mid-30s approach. Now, with Szczesny’s future very much up in the air, Perin’s status might be more dependent on what Szczesny ends up doing more than anything else. ...............

 

While Szczesny had yet another very strong season in goal with Juventus yet again in the recently completed campaign, that might not be enough for him to prevent Di Gregorio from becoming Motta’s top choice for the starting keeper role next season. ...............

Wojciech Szczesny has reportedly agreed personal terms with Al-Nassr as Juventus look to ship him out this summer.

 

The Bianconeri have decided to make a change ahead of the new season, ready to welcome a new number one to replace the Polish veteran. Their primary target to replace the 34-year-old is Monza’s Michele Di Gregorio and a deal in the region of €18m plus €2m in add-ons is close to being finalised.

This could end up making things complicated.

 

 

 

The reality has certainly started to set in: There will be a changing of the guard between the posts at Juventus come the start of the 2024-25 season. Juve have lined up a new goalkeeper and we’re all now just awaiting the official announcement for the man who will take over for Wojciech Szczesny.

 

So what about Szczesny?

 

In what is probably a surprise to some knowing that previous reports had him thinking of going out in a little bit of a different kind of way, Szczesny has looked to be on the verge of a move to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League and a big pay day to follow. But, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday night, that move is now suddenly on hold due to “problems between clubs” and a potential disagreement between Al-Nassr and the rest of the Saudi Pro League when it comes to signing Szczesny. (The Saudi Pro League recently revoked a rule that has cleared a way for foreign goalkeepers to be signed starting this summer.)

 

It has been reported Szczesny could earn as much as €19 million per season in his proposed two-year contract with Al-Nassr. ...............

 

Now, things are apparently on hold. ...............

 

Maybe the sudden issues relating to the Saudi Pro League side of things resolve themselves and Szczesny can move and Juve have 100% cleared the way for Di Gregorio to take over as their starter in goal. But for now, things are a little murkier than they appeared a day or two ago.

After a summer of wondering if Juve can sell their former starting goalkeeper, the end result of a limited market is upon us.

 

 

 

Once the rumors started that Juventus were thinking of making the summer of 2024 the summer of change in goal (and then basically all over the roster), one of the biggest questions became how quickly could they shed Wojciech Szczesny’s big salary.

 

As one of the highest paid players at the club, it wasn’t going to be easy even with there reportedly being interest from Saudi Arabia and a big-time offer coming his way from the Saudi Pro League. But once that option disappeared, the salary he earned was going to be a sticking point for any potential new club to try and take on.

 

That’s why it’s understandable we’ve reached this point. Juventus and Szczesny’s camp have met and reached an agreement on a contract termination that will see the 34-year-old Pole become a free agent. Szczesny, who was entering the final year of his current contract at Juve with a net salary of €6.5 million, has been part of the starting lineup’s worth of players who had been informed by the club that they weren’t in new manager Thiago Motta’s plans and had seen rumors of potential destinations really slow down over the last month or so. ............

 

It makes sense for a guy like Szczesny who has said in the not-so-distant past, ““If the club that has given you so much needs to terminate the contract and needs your help, you should be able to help it.” ............
