Sporting miss Carvalho, Coentrao

Sporting CP have named their squad to face Juventus, with William Carvalho and Fabio Coentrao out.

The Portuguese side face the Bianconeri tonight, with the Serie A champions only needing a win to progress to the Last 16, as long as Barcelona beat Olympiakos.

Defensive midfielder William Carvalho misses out, as does former Real Madrid full-back Coentrao.

The first match of the double-header saw Juve win 2-1 in Turin, but after an unconvincing performance.

Sporting squad to face Juventus: Rui Patrício, Salin, Ristovski, Coates, Tobias Figueiredo, André Pinto, Jonathan Silva, Petrovic, João Palhinha, Bruno Fernandes, Acuña, Bruno César, Battaglia, Mattheus Oliveira, Gelson Martins, Podence, Dost, Doumbia

Juventus cannot afford to slip up in their trip to Lisbon, as Juan Cuadrado and Mattia De Sciglio step in against Sporting.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The Bianconeri sit in second place behind Barcelona, but a defeat here would put them back level with Sporting and their qualification for the knockouts at serious risk.

On the other hand, a victory here would automatically send Juve through if Barcelona avoid defeat to Olympiakos.

Max Allegri must do without injured Medhi Benatia and Benedikt Howedes, while Blaise Matuidi is still not 100 per cent fit, so Miralem Pjanic and Sami Khedira make up the midfield.

De Sciglio makes his second start in a Juventus jersey and only his third appearance, not featuring since picking up an injury in the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on September 12.

The other options for the right-back role, with Stephan Lichtsteiner cup-tied, are Stefano Sturaro and even Juan Cuadrado.

Cuadrado gets the nod in an attacking role rather than Douglas Costa with Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain.

This is Mandzukic’s 100th appearance in a Bianconeri jersey and he has scored in each of his last four Champions League games, having missed the opener at Barcelona due to injury.

Sporting lost 2-1 in Turin, having taken the lead through an Alex Sandro own goal, and represent the biggest threat to Juve’s qualification to the next round.

Jovane Cabral is suspended, with Alan Ruiz, William Carvalho, Fabio Coentrao, Jeremy Mathieu and Cristiano Piccini injured.

Former Roma flop Seydou Doumbia is on the bench again, as Bas Dost is supported by Gelson and Acuna.

Keep an eye on ex-Sampdoria midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who has been a huge success.

Andre Pinto and Stefan Ristovski step in to bolster the defence.

Juve have a terrible record in Lisbon, losing all three of their previous visits.

Sporting: Rui Patricio; Ristovski, Coates, Andre Pinto, Jonathan; Battaglia, Bruno Fernandes, Bruno Cesar; Gelson, Bas Dost, Acuna

Sporting bench: Salin, Podence, Mattheus, Petrovic, Figueiredo, Palhinha, Doumbia

Juventus: Buffon; De Sciglio, Barzagli, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic; Cuadrado, Dybala, Mandzukic; Higuain

Juventus bench: Szczesny, Marchisio, Douglas Costa, Matuidi, Asamoah, Rugani, Bernardeschi

HT 1-0: Juventus trail in Lisbon

http://www.football-italia.net/112151/ht-juventus-trail-lisbon

Oct 31, 2017

A disappointing Juventus are trailing 1-0 at the break in Lisbon, as Bruno Cesar put Sporting in front.

The Bianconeri fought back from an Alex Sandro own goal to win 2-1 when these sides met in Turin earlier this month, but were still competing for second place behind Barcelona. Jovane Cabral was suspended, with Alan Ruiz, William Carvalho, Fabio Coentrao, Jeremy Mathieu and Cristiano Piccini injured, transforming the line-up. Meanwhile, Mattia De Sciglio made his first appearance since the injury against Barcelona on September 12, as Stefano Sturaro, Benedikt Howedes and Medhi Benatia were injured, with Stephan Lichsteiner cup-tied.

Bruno Cesar blasted over from the edge of the box at the end of a well-worked team move, while Mario Mandzukic’s first touch let him down after springing the offside trap.

Sporting started far brighter and took the lead when Gigi Buffon only parried a Gelson Martins angled drive and Bruno Cesar reacted far quicker than the Juventus players to fire in the rebound from 10 yards.

Moments later, Sami Khedira’s glancing header whistled just wide from a Juan Cuadrado cross, but the hosts continued to have the better of the game, Bas Dost denied by a decisive Andrea Barzagli block.

Higuain wasted a counter-attack by firing straight at the goalkeeper and Juve wanted a free kick on the edge of the box for a challenge on Mandzukic, but the half-time whistle had already gone.

Sporting 1-0 Juventus (Half-Time)

Sporting: Rui Patricio; Ristovski, Coates, Andre Pinto, Jonathan; Battaglia, Bruno Fernandes, Bruno Cesar; Gelson, Bas Dost, Acuna

Gonzalo Higuain struck late to snatch a very precious point after a disappointing Juventus performance away to Sporting in Lisbon.

Straight after the restart, Gelson Martins out-sprinted Alex Sandro, but Andrea Barzagli got back for the decisive block. Miralem Pjanic and Paulo Dybala fired over the bar, while Bruno Cesar blasted off target on the counter and Rui Patricio smothered a De Sciglio deflected effort.

It was almost 2-0 for the Portuguese giants, as Dost just failed to get on the end of a cross, so Max Allegri introduced Douglas Costa for De Sciglio, moving Cuadrado to right-back.

Juve thought they had done enough to equalise when Mandzukic and Dybala combined to set up Higuain for a header from six yards, but Rui Patricio managed an extraordinary reaction save.

The Bianconeri did get their equaliser when Cuadrado threaded a smart ball through for Higuain, who dinked the finish over the on-rushing goalkeeper from a tight angle.

They almost turned it around moments later, Douglas Costa firing inches wide, while Bruno Fernandes blasted over from distance. Neither side particularly felt like celebrating at the final whistle.

Sporting 1-1 Juventus

Bruno Cesar 20 (S), Higuain 79 (J)

Sporting: Rui Patricio; Ristovski (Petrovic 91), Coates, Andre Pinto, Jonathan; Battaglia, Bruno Fernandes, Bruno Cesar (Palhinha 64); Gelson, Dost (Doumbia 81), Acuna

Juventus: Buffon; De Sciglio (Douglas Costa 65), Barzagli, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira (Matuidi 69), Pjanic; Cuadrado, Dybala (Bernardeschi 83), Mandzukic; Higuain

Allegri: 'An ugly Juventus'

Sporting-Juventus, Allegri: Di buono solo non aver perso

http://www.football-italia.net/112156/allegri-ugly-juventus

Oct 31, 2017

Max Allegri confessed to being “disappointed” with Juventus after a 1-1 draw at Sporting. “The result was the only good thing about it.”

A victory here would’ve secured their qualification for the Round of 16, but after Bruno Cesar opened the scoring for the hosts, Gonzalo Higuain snatched a late equaliser.

“It’s disappointing, as we had the chance to seal qualification and we didn’t do it. Now we’ve got Barcelona and then Olympiakos, so it’s all still up in the air,” Allegri told Mediaset Premium.

“I am disappointed because the first half was ugly, the second was better, and we were a bit too chaotic. We should’ve been more organised.

“We’ll keep the result tonight, which was the only good thing about the performance, really.

“It was all so simple, we had to win here and then it’d all be done, we would be qualified. Evidently this team needs to feel fear in order to perform. It’s all still open, we have to go to Athens and that could be an inferno.”

Allegri introduced Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi late on, moving Juan Cuadrado to right-back.

“It was natural that changes could help in the last 30-20 minutes, but after the goal we should’ve shown more patience and pressured around their area, instead we moved it from the right to the left and were no longer dangerous.”

‘Why Juve paid €90m for Higuain…’

http://www.football-italia.net/112168/‘why-juve-paid-€90m-higuain…’

Nov 1, 2017

Sporting CP boss Jorge Jesus claims Juventus paid €90m for Gonzalo Higuain “for nights like these” after his equaliser on Tuesday.

Higuain rescued a 1-1 draw for Juve to leave them second in their Champions League group and on track for the knockout stages, three points clear of Sporting with only two games remaining.

“Higuain? Juve paid €90m for nights like these,” the Coach said after the game.

“However, we still have a chance to go through. Barcelona didn’t score three goals like we did in Greece and I don’t think Juve will either, so everything is open.

“If we play like this or how we did in Turin, we can do the same at Barcelona.”

Juventus duo make comebacks

http://www.football-italia.net/112242/juventus-duo-make-comebacks

Nov 2, 2017

Marko Pjaca was on target and Benedikt Howedes got a run-out in today’s friendly, as the Juventus pair get closer to their comebacks.

The Bianconeri earned a 6-0 victory over a local side this afternoon, with Douglas Costa’s brace, plus goals from Pjaca, Claudio Marchisio, Rodrigo Bentancur and Daniele Rugani.

Croatia international winger Pjaca has been out of action since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in March, but is practically ready for a comeback.

Howedes arrived in Turin over the summer, but still hasn’t been able to make his debut in a Juventus jersey due to a couple of thigh issues.

Both players could well take part in this weekend's Serie A match with Benevento.

Cuadrado: Benevento not easy

http://www.football-italia.net/112287/cuadrado-benevento-not-easy

Nov 3, 2017

Juan Cuadrado has urged Juventus not to become complacent when they face Benevento on Sunday. “No game is easy…”

Juve have won the last six Scudetti and are in the mix for a seventh title, while Benevento have lost all 11 of their games in Serie A to date this season, but Cuadrado made it clear the Stregoni would be no walk in the park.

“No game is easy, we have to get onto the pitch, with the awareness that when the referee blows his whistle, we’re at 0-0,” the winger told Premium Sport.

“We must have the right approach and try to win at all costs. The draw with Sporting CP? We were a bit sad after the game because if we won, we’d have been more relaxed, but there are some games that go a certain way.

“We gave everything we had to equalise and win, but we didn’t play with the right amount of substance.

“Still, it was an important point, everything still depends on us and we have to face all our matches with the right attitude.”

Pjanic out of Juve-Benevento

http://www.football-italia.net/112319/pjanic-out-juve-benevento

Nov 4, 2017

Miralem Pjanic is out of the Juventus squad to face Benevento, but Benedikt Howedes could make his debut.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

Bosnian midfielder Pjanic is unavailable after picking up a bruise to his right thigh during Tuesday’s 1-1 Champions League draw at Sporting CP.

He will be evaluated next week, so won’t be released for international duty.

The good news for Max Allegri is that Howedes is in the squad and hopeful of making his debut for the first time since arriving over the summer, as the German defender has shaken off a muscular issue.

Juventus squad for Benevento: Buffon, De Sciglio, Chiellini, Khedira, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Higuain, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Barzagli, Pinsoglio, Mandzukic, Howedes, Asamoah, Szczesny, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Bentancur, Bernardeschi

Allegri: 'Alex Sandro below par'

http://www.football-italia.net/112320/allegri-alex-sandro-below-par

Nov 4, 2017

Max Allegri reassures Alex Sandro and Paulo Dybala, as Juventus take on expectations against new boys Benevento.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“It’s true Benevento haven’t picked up a point yet, but that is precisely why the numbers are terrifying. We can’t have the wrong attitude.

“There will be some changes, but most of the line-up will be the one that played on Tuesday against Sporting,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Let’s not forget it happened to us against Frosinone, we were held to a draw by them. The historic example is Lecce, who were already relegated and still won against Roma, ending their Scudetto hopes.

“We must put the right passion in to this game, as this is the 120th anniversary of the club and we cannot afford a mistake right now.”

Miralem Pjanic is out of the squad after sustaining a nasty bruise to his thigh, while Medhi Benatia “had a couple of training half-sessions, but is not available and it took longer than expected.

“Claudio Marchisio could start tomorrow and I think Sami Khedira will be in the squad, but might rest.

“At this moment, Alex Sandro’s performances are a little below par. These things can happen, I spoke to the lad. Paulo Dybala had very little time in training after the last journey for international duty and hasn’t looked sharp. After that, we should hopefully be able to focus more on fitness and training.

“I explained to him that against Sporting on Tuesday he did well, but lacked some sharpness. I am sure he’ll put in a good performance tomorrow, but he’s very young and not accustomed to these peaks and troughs.

“I don’t know if Mario Mandzukic will play tomorrow, as he’s been in many games. Juan Cuadrado or Federico Bernardeschi will play tomorrow.”

Match preview Juventus-Benevento

https://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/106485

Nov 4, 2017

Juventus host bottom of the league Benevento this weekend as they look to keep the pressure on leaders Napoli.

Juve were made to work exceptionally hard for their away point in the Champions League against Sporting CP on Tuesday, but will be hoping to make it four league wins in a row this Sunday.

As for Benevento, their current record reads 11 games and 11 losses. It has been a harrowing start to life in Serie A for Roberto De Zerbi’s men, having already fired Coach Marco Baroni, and their search for their first points of the season does not get any easier. A trip to Turin to face six-time consecutive Champions Juventus isn’t the ideal fixture at a time like this.

The Bianconeri sit in joint third position in Serie A, three points behind Napoli and one behind Inter. Whilst they are in good goal-scoring form, they have shown that their defence is not as solid as it has been in previous seasons.

They are the most prolific side in Serie A with 33 goals, but have conceded more than Roma, Napoli and Inter with 10.

Will Benevento be able to breach them? Unlikely. They have scored just four goals in their 11 games and, unsurprisingly, have conceded the most with 29. Goals have been very tough to come by and against the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele Rugani or Andrea Barzagli, it looks like being another goalless 90 minutes for Le Streghe.

It has been far from vintage Juve this season, but they are very much in the title race and will feel their best is yet to come. They are in a good position to qualify from their Champions League group too after Gonzalo Higuain’s late equaliser in Lisbon.

The Argentinian seems to have found form again after a difficult opening 10 games. Pipita scored both goals in last weekend’s 2-0 win away to Milan and has found the net in both his last two Champions League matches.

Massimiliano Allegri will be looking to rotate players, given the opposition and the fact they had midweek commitments. Gigi Buffon, Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira and Alex Sandro are expected to be rested and the likes of Wojciech Szczesny, Douglas Costa, Federico Bernardeschi and Blaise Matuidi could be given starts.

There might even be room for Marko Pjaca and Benedikt Howedes after long injury lay-offs. It would be the German defender’s debut for the Bianconeri.

The away side will no doubt see very little of the ball and they will be hoping that their front three can hit Juve on the counter-attack. The Old Lady will dominate and look to win comfortably, so given the form of Higuain and Dybala, it would not be a surprise to see them really expose the Benevento defence.

Keep an eye on: Gonzalo Higuain (Juventus) – Since he was dropped to the bench by Allegri for their Champions League game against Olympiakos, Higuain has shown his determination to reach the highs of last season. He was excellent against Milan, both goals of the highest quality, and another important goal against Sporting midweek. He will be looking to add to his six goals for the season so far.

Form Guide: Juventus (W W W L D) Benevento (L L L L L)

Stat Fact: This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, but Max Allegri faced Benevento twice as Coach of SPAL in the 2004-05 Serie C campaign, managing just one point.

Top Tip: Higuain to score 2+ goals.

Last season: Not played.

Juventus (probable): Szczesny; De Sciglio, Barzagli, Rugani; Asamoah; Marchisio, Matuidi; Bernardeschi, Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain

Suspended: None

Benevento (probable): Brignoli; Venuti, Antei, Di Chiara; Memushaj, Cataldi, Viola, Chibsah; Ciciretti, Lazaar; Iemmello

Suspended: Lucioni

 Juventus v Benevento

Serie A Week 12 – Sunday, 5th November – 14:00 GMT – Allianz Stadium

juventus

Juventus

Juventus’ Champions Leagues games are always emotional roller coasters and at the end of them you are never truly satisfied. The Sporting tilt was no different: the squad once again started slowly, let the opponents control the ball and conceded an avoidable goal. However, they cranked up the intensity in the second half, when it was like seeing a different team, managed to tie the game and could have won outright. The draw was a missed opportunity because of the Barcelona result and likely takes away the chance to finish in first position, but, all things considered,  qualification is within reach.

In the last Serie A match, the Bianconeri obtained a massive result at San Siro against Milan. The match was pretty balanced and both teams had offensive gusts. The main difference was that Juventus have a few superstars on the roster, while the Rossoneri are a collection of good/excellent players, but they are still missing something. Three pretty satisfying days for Gonzalo Higuain, who silenced his critics with two stunners on Saturday and with a pretty finish on Tuesday. It is safe to say that last year’s Pipita is back. On the other hand, Paulo Dybala has had a couple of down weeks: we could not expect him to keep up with his stellar scoring average, but he has not looked spry after the break. There was some talk about him resting this Sunday, but Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that he will start in the pre-game presser.

The coach was quite talkative about the lineup this time: Sami Khedira will get a breather and will most likely be joined by Gianluigi Buffon and Mario Mandzukic on the bench. Alex Sandro will start as he tries to get out of his slump. Miralem Pjanic has picked up a quad injury and has been ruled out, along with Medhi Benatia, whose ankle ailment is becoming worrisome. The absence of the Bosnian ace and Dybala’s being in the XI probably rules out the possibility of a 4-3-3. The coach propped up Claudio Marchisio, but Rodrigo Bentancur could end up getting the nod.

Benedikt Howedes is in the squad list and could make an appearance if things go well. Mattia De Sciglio played in the UCL game, so the emergency at right back is now solved and those three and Stephan Lichtsteiner will battle for the starting job in the upcoming weeks. The other two doubts are in the heart of the defence, where probably one between Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli will rest in favour of Daniele Rugani, and on the right flank, where Federico Bernardeschi has a slight edge on Juan Cuadrado. Marko Pjaca played in the midweek friendly and will get some minutes with the U20 team: he will be ready to contribute after the break, we will see if he actually manages to get playing time.

This is not the toughest match-up of the season, to use a euphemism, but everybody can hurt you in Serie A if given the opportunity. Many brought up the Frosinone game from last season and it is an apropos comparison, even though they were probably more organized than Benevento. In any case, no fixture can be taken lightly.

Probable lineup:

4-2-3-1Szczesny; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Rugani, Asamoah; Marchisio, Matuidi; Bernardeschi, Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain.

Injured players:

Pjanic (quad), Benatia (ankle), Pjaca (knee).

Suspended Players:

None

Benevento

Probable lineup:

3-4-2-1:

As everybody knows by now, Benevento have had the worst start in Serie A history because of their eleven losses in a row. They sacked the coach Marco Baroni to hire Roberto De Zerbi, who might be a little more energetic and have slightly more experience in the top league, but it is hard to see such change as something more than a lateral move. The problems lie in the roster more than on the bench.

They built a defence that was unconvincing to begin with, because players such as Andrea Costa and Luca Antei were backups elsewhere, but then were hit by a slew of injuries, capped off by the suspension of the captain Fabio Lucioni for doping-related charges. They have fielded a patchwork backline in most of the games, featuring either the fullback Lorenzo Venuti as centre-back or the rookie Berat Djimsiti and things have gone awry. They have not gotten much from the flanks either, even though the possible combinations of Gaetano Letizia, Gianluca Di Chiara and Achraf Lazaar look good on paper for a low-table team.

As a whole, it looks like a team that lacks cohesion and leadership. The absence of Lucioni took away their oldest player and probably letting go Fabio Ceravolo was a mistake. Having a double-digit striker can swing the relegation race and so far Pietro Iemmello, Massimo Coda and George Puscas have not showed yet that they can be that guy, while Samuel Armenteros has been deployed for very limited stints. At least they recently got back from an ankle injury Amato Ciciretti, their most exciting player and the main offensive caterer. Marco D’Alessandro was supposed to be a big contributor, but he has spent most time on the shelf: he is on the squad list for this one, but they have lost Iemmello to a last-minute problem, so they can not deploy their best trident yet. Coda is probably next in line to start upfront, but I would not put it past them to try a false-nine.

In the last game, they used a rather weird 3-4-2-1, with two fullbacks, Venuti and Di Chiara, adapted as centre-backs and Danilo Cataldi and Ledian Memushaj more advanced. A very physical lineup that did little to stop Lazio: at least the insertion of Ciciretti at the break gave them a shot in the arm, even though they did not manage to score. The coach is probably going to ditch that slowpoke formation by putting at least one true more offensive player. Djimsiti could take Di Chiara’s spot in the backline.

Probable lineup:

3-4-2-1: Brignoli; Venuti, Antei, Di Chiara; Letizia, Viola, Chibsah, Lazaar; Ciciretti, Cataldi; Coda.

Injured players:

Iemmello, Costa (hamstring).

Suspended Players:

None.

Juventus will wear a special one-off jersey today against Benevento to mark the 120th anniversary of the club’s foundation.

The Old Lady was founded on November 1, 1897, and this game signals the end of week-long celebrations.

This jersey harks back to the 1940s with a curved collar and large stripes.

The symbol of three gold stars – each representing 10 Serie A titles won – is also in a more old-style patch on the chest.

Juventus wish to honour the 120th anniversary of the club’s foundation and start Claudio Marchisio against bottom club Benevento.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The Old Lady was founded 120 years ago this week and this match is the culmination of those celebrations, so nothing less than a victory is expected.

That’s especially true considering they are facing Benevento, who have lost all 11 Serie A matches in their debut top flight campaign.

Max Allegri is without Miralem Pjanic, Medhi Benatia and Marko Pjaca, but Benedikt Howedes is on the bench and awaiting his Juventus debut after a series of muscular issues.

This all means that Marchisio gets his first start since the opening round of the season against Cagliari on August 19.

There are also starts for Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa, joining regulars Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain, though Federico Bernardeschi is snubbed again.

Benevento have not played particularly badly this term, but failure to score goals and a leaky defence proved their undoing.

Filippo Costa and Pietro Iemmello are injured, captain Fabio Lucioni suspended after failing a doping test, but Marco D’Alessandro is available again.

Amato Ciciretti is their main inspiration and set-piece specialist, so the most likely to cause Juventus any problems.

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Marchisio, Matuidi; Cuadrado, Dybala, Douglas Costa; Higuain

Benevento: Brignoli; Djimsiti, Antei, Di Chiara; Venuti, Chibsah, Viola, Lazaar; Ciciretti, Cataldi; Armenteros

Marotta on Dybala and Alex Sandro

http://www.football-italia.net/112379/marotta-dybala-and-alex-sandro

Nov 5, 2017

Juventus director Beppe Marotta warned Benevento are not “sparring partners,” but reassured Alex Sandro and Paulo Dybala.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium at 15.00 - 14.00 GMT.

“We are facing a Benevento side that everyone assumes will be our sparring partner, but that is absolutely not the case. We must fight to earn the three points without looking at the table,” Marotta told Mediaset Premium.

There was controversy over Dybala after he reacted with irritation to the last two substitutions.

“Dybala is giving a strong response, but perhaps people are asking things of him that are difficult for someone his age.

“The club has a daily rapport with the Coach and the locker room. We only intervene when it’s an extraordinary situation and I don’t believe this was. It was a player who was irritated at leaving the pitch and not scoring goals, but that was it.

“It happens in the career of a player to have a drop in form, for reasons that are indecipherable, but we are trying to stay close to Alex Sandro and work out how he can get back to giving his best.

“Selfishly, we are happy that Gonzalo Higuain is not called up by Argentina, as it saves on the journeys and stress, but on the other hand we realise it’s the dream of every player to represent his country every time.”

HT 0-1: Benevento stun Juventus

Amato Ciciretti’s free kick has given bottom of the table Benevento a shock half-time lead away to Juventus.

The Bianconeri were fully expected to sweep bottom of the table Benevento aside and celebrate this week’s 120th anniversary of the club’s foundation. Miralem Pjanic, Medhi Benatia and Marko Pjaca were sidelined, but Benedikt Howedes was on the bench and Claudio Marchisio received his first start since the opening weekend. Le Streghe had lost all 11 Serie A matches and made the trip to Turin without Pietro Iemmello, Filippo Costa and Fabio Lucioni.

Douglas Costa’s cross-shot was palmed on to the upright by Alberto Brignoli, then moments later the Brazilian rattled the bar from a tight angle with his ferocious rising strike.

However, it was Benevento who took a shock lead at the Allianz Juventus Arena when Amato Ciciretti earned and converted a stunning free kick, curling it round the wall and into the near bottom corner with Wojciech Szczesny rooted to the spot.

Juan Cuadrado missed several good opportunities and Brignoli beat away Paulo Dybala’s solo effort at the end of a mazy run. Dybala also missed a sitter, although Gonzalo Higuain appeared to be offside in the build-up.

Dybala and Douglas Costa had chances with free kicks from just outside the area, but both were weak and straight at the goalkeeper.

Benevento had Juve scared

Amato Ciciretti’s free kick had given bottom club Benevento a shock lead in Turin, but Juventus fought back for the victory and move into second place.

After the restart, Higuain insisted on taking a free kick, which went off target, and Blaise Matuidi hit a fresh-air shot from six yards on a loose ball.

The siege eventually paid off when Matuidi nodded a Mattia De Sciglio cross back from the by-line for Higuain’s hooked volley into the far top corner.

Brignoli did well to parry both Cuadrado’s effort and the Higuain follow-up, but the goalkeeper misjudged an Alex Sandro cross, allowing Cuadrado to turn in at the back post.

It still wasn’t over, as Danilo Cataldi’s screamer from distance dipped not far away from the top corner. Higuain was furious when booked for simulation, as there did seem to be contact Luca Antei, albeit outside the area, but not enough to warrant his swan-dive.

Ciciretti had timid penalty appeals after going shoulder-to-shoulder with Giorgio Chiellini, while Rodrigo Bentancur’s shot was fingertipped round the base of the near post.

Juventus: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Marchisio, Matuidi; Cuadrado (Bernardeschi 81), Dybala (Bentancur 87), Douglas Costa (Mandzukic 77); Higuain

Benevento: Brignoli; Djimsiti, Antei, Di Chiara; Venuti, Chibsah, Viola, Lazaar (Lombardi 61); Ciciretti, Cataldi (Parigini 87); Armenteros (Coda 70)

Juventus 2 - Benevento 1: Initial reaction and random observations

Where to start, where to start...

Benevento rolled into Turin on Sunday afternoon arguably the worst team Serie A has seen in years. In their first 11 games of the 2017-18 campaign, not only had they failed to pick up a win and were on a historic pace for consecutive losses to open a season, but they had allowed 29 goals over that span. Do the math real quick and that’s nearly three goals allowed per game. That’s not good — at all.

Yet, as Juventus and their beautiful 120th anniversary jerseys went into the locker room, the scoreline was as follows:

Benevento 1, Juventus 0.

I don’t get it, either.

Even as Juventus made its comeback and went on to claim a 2-1 win over Benevento thanks to second-half goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Juan Cuadrado, nothing was made to be easy or pretty. (Although both of Juve’s goals were actually quite pretty.)

This wasn’t the complete effort that was the Milan win one weekend ago. It wasn’t anything close to a good win. It was the definition of winning ugly, taking the three points and probably never speaking of what just happened over the previous two hours again.

The thing is, it’s not like we can just throw it away as Juve having an off day against a team that they pretty much knew they were going to beat even before the ball was kicked off.

Juventus dominated possession Sunday afternoon. They dominated the shot count. They dominated in just about every statistical category there is. But when it came to the actual performance and their ability to take advantage of a completely disorganized defense that was coughing up mistakes right and left, Juve seemingly couldn’t do much of anything right.

That’s why a team with no wins to its name almost came away with a point — and maybe more — against Juventus at Allianz Stadium.

Juventus didn’t play well at all. Their form continues to be described as completely meh at the very best. That’s no secret at this point.

But hey, at least they looked good. That’s because of their anniversary kits, that is.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Starting lineup thought No. 1: CLAUDIO BACK
  • Starting lin1eup thought No. 2: RUGANI BACK
  • Starting lineup thought No. 3: FEDE BA ... Oh, no, not that. I guess playing the worst team in Serie A this season still isn’t enough for Bernardeschi to get a start.
  • That being said, I want to congratulate Federico Bernardeschi on his 10 minutes of game time against Benevento. He’s really getting a chance to show he can shine!
  • New (yet old) jersey thoughts: I’m in love.
  • Biggest stat from the first half had nothing to do with how many scoring chances Juventus continued to blow. It was the fact that Benevento was up 1-0 and didn’t have a single touch inside of Juventus’ box. That’s just wild.
  • Mr. Higuain’s getting going again. Five goals in his last four games kind of going. He’s still scuffing some really good scoring chances, but he’s also scoring some really, really good goals like he did on Sunday with that beautiful side-volley of his to tie the game up. It sounds weird to say that he’s wasteful yet still completely decisive at the same time, but that’s kinda what he’s doing right now.
  • I feel like this was a classic Cuadrado kind of match if there ever was one. With that I mean he did some good things like score the game-winning goal with a very good header off a very good Alex Sandro cross. But, before that, he did some not-very-good things and wasted some very, very good scoring chances. You could say that about just about all of Juve’s attacking players on Sunday, but when it comes to Cuadrado, there’s always going to be as much cold as there is hot to his game. That’s just how it is, folks.
  • You know who was one of Juventus’ best players ended up being, especially in the second half? That’s Claudio Marchisio. And when Claudio Marchisio plays well, Juventus usually end up winning games. It’s funny how that works out.
  • You know who also was one of Juventus best players against Benevento? That’s Daniele Rugani. And when Daniele Rugani plays well, Juventus usually ends up winning games. It’s funny how that works out.
  • Gonna go ahead and steal a tweet I posted earlier and copy/past it here: Rodrigo Bentancur is good.
  • Douglas Costa was one of Juve’s most dangerous players in the first half but faded as the game went on. Still, if how he played in the first 30 or 40 minutes is what we’re going to see the majority of the time when he’s on the field and feeling good, then he’s going to add a dynamic that no other Juve winger currently can provide.
  • Wojciech Szczesny pulled an old Gigi Buffon move and played 90 minutes without having to do much of anything at all.
  • But, Woj, next time there’s a free kick, might want to check on your wall. If Marchisio was about another foot to his right he not only would have been completely even with the near post, but also right in the path of what ended up being Benevento’s only shot on goal.
  • We really do need to do some research and find out Juventus’ win percentage when Giorgio Chiellini needs to get his head wrapped because he’s bleeding. Without any kind of evidence or anything like that, I would like to think that it’s gotta be pretty good.
  • Torino did their job.
  • Chievo did their job, too.
  • Juventus won ugly as hell, got three points and then saw two teams in front of them in the standings drop points. We head into the international break with Juve just one single point behind Napoli. I mean, it could be worse.

Allegri: 'Juventus too hasty'

Allegri si accontenta e gode: «Gara stregata, brava Juventus»

http://www.football-italia.net/112390/allegri-juventus-too-hasty

Nov 5, 2017

Max Allegri both complimented and criticised Juventus for being “too hasty” in the 2-1 victory over Benevento.

Amato Ciciretti’s free kick had given the lead to bottom of the table Benevento in the first half, but Gonzalo Higuain and Juan Cuadrado turned it around.

“I have to compliment the lads today, because we went behind to the only shot on goal of the first half. It seemed like a cursed game, but we needed to be calm, sharp and not too hasty,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“After going 2-1 up, we continued to run risks on a few corners and counter-attacks. It was not easy today, because after turning it around, we thought it might be over. These games are always complicated.”

Claudio Marchisio made his first Serie A start since August, while Paulo Dybala again failed to find the net.

“Dybala had a good game. He could’ve scored more goals in his 17 competitive matches so far this season, but just needs to rediscover his sharpness and form.

“Marchisio did well and I didn’t expect him to last the whole match, but I’m happy with his performance.”

With Inter and Napoli held to draws today by Torino and Chievo respectively, Juve climbed into second place.

“Napoli are doing extraordinary things, as are Inter and Roma. Winning games is never easy or to be taken for granted.

“The Serie A season is 38 rounds and I always say we need to go at cruising speed, because too many bumps and waves make you feel ill.”

“This is a great side and will fight to the end.”

Mattia De Sciglio admits he ‘cannot please everyone’ after criticism from sections of Juventus’ support.

The former Milan full-back played the full 90 minutes of this afternoon’s 2-1 victory over Benevento but was asked about the scepticism towards him after the match.

“For me, it’s enough to feel the trust of my teammates, the club and the Coach,” De Sciglio answered.

“But you can’t please everyone. I always try to do my best.

“I have always been calm, now I have new motivation.

“I am at a club which is at the top of Europe, so the motivation comes all by itself. You can improve every day.”

Discussing the game, De Sciglio said he always knew Benevento would provide tough opposition despite now having lost all 12 of their matches so far this season.

“We knew it would be a tough game from a mental point of view.

“Benevento wanted to shut up shop and take advantage of our mistakes.

“We conceded a goal from their only shot, but we were slow and it was hard to find spaces.

“Then, in the second half we were better and found larger spaces.”

Icardi: 'Love scoring against Juve'

http://www.football-italia.net/112528/icardi-love-scoring-against-juve

Nov 8, 2017

“I love to score goals against Juventus, as they are the rivals for Inter. It’s a classic fixture of Italian football against them. I scored past Juve both with Samp and the Nerazzurri.

“My hat-trick in the derby with Milan was indescribable. To complete a hat-trick by winning 3-2 at the last minute was extraordinary. I also still had the regrets over missing a penalty in the 2-2 draw last season. The affection you feel from the fans after these victories is the best thing.

Although Icardi was approached by Italy to represent the Azzurri, he always held out for Argentina.

“I will always thank Italy for what this country did for me, but I feel Argentinean and never thought of wearing the Azzurri jersey. Playing for the Albiceleste is wonderful and returning after such a long time to help us qualify for the World Cup was a dream.

“Paulo Dybala is a great friend, but a very different player to me. It’s hard to find someone of his characteristics who scores a lot of goals.”

Benatia in line for Juve return

Medhi Benatia is reportedly in line to start Juventus’ Serie A match against Sampdoria on Sunday.

According to Tuttosport, Max Allegri has found a ‘new’ player at his disposal in Benatia after he fired Morocco to their first World Cup in 20 years last week.

The 30-year-old had not played for Juve since October 18 due to injury but has come back as “a Czar in defence”, writes the newspaper, given he could be the Bianconeri’s only centre-back going to Russia next summer.

Although Giorgio Chiellini and Daniele Rugani are rated likelier to start at Marassi, Benatia could yet be thrown into action, with two Champions League must-wins also coming up.

Juan Cuadrado is in the Juventus squad travelling to face Sampdoria, but Gigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli will not start, confirmed Max Allegri.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

Cuadrado returned early from Colombia with a muscular issue and has been training separately from his teammates, but is still part of the travelling party.

Rodrigo Bentancur is not included, but Coach Allegri confirmed Italy internationals Buffon and Barzagli “will not play tomorrow.

“They are fine, but are shaking off a profound disappointment. Life goes on and they will overcome it.”

Both Buffon and Barzagli are retiring from international duty after Italy lost the 2018 World Cup play-off to Sweden, 1-0 on aggregate.

“Miralem Pjanic and Cuadrado are available, but I’ll decide tomorrow whether or not to use them.”

Juventus squad for Sampdoria: Buffon, De Sciglio, Chiellini, Benatia, Pjanic, Khedira, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Higuain, Dybala, Douglas Costa, Alex Sandro, Matuidi, Barzagli, Pinsoglio, Mandzukic, Howedes, Asamoah, Szczesny, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Bernardeschi

Allegri: 'Italy? Absolutely not'

http://www.football-italia.net/112965/allegri-italy-absolutely-not

Nov 18, 2017

Max Allegri has ruled himself out of the running for the Italy job and urged Juventus to “take it one game at a time” against Sampdoria and Barcelona.

In today’s Press conference, the Coach was asked if he would be interested in replacing Giampiero Ventura for the Nazionale.

“Absolutely not,” was his reply. “It is an ambition of mine, but not now. I have a contract with Juventus, I am happy here and need to build the Bianconeri future.

“We can talk about it again in a few years, if I am given that possibility.”

There were also reports Allegri was ready to quit the Italian Coaches’ Association in protest at President Renzo Ulivieri’s defence of FIGC chief Carlo Tavecchio.

“If I have to make a decision, I will do so in the opportune venue. There are things that are working and others that are not working. Some of us were born to chat and others weren’t.”

With Barcelona coming up in the Champions League next week and Sampdoria on Sunday afternoon, Allegri is eager to spread the strain over his squad.

“Paulo Dybala could be left out, as I have to choose between him and Federico Bernardeschi. I have many doubts for tomorrow. Gigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli won’t start, as they are overcoming a huge disappointment” after Italy missed out on the 2018 World Cup.

“Juventus are in the running for Champions League progress and are one point off an extraordinary Napoli team in the Serie A table, so I’d say we are on track.

“Until January 6, it is going to be a series of crucial head-to-head games. It’s not easy to play Samp, as they are unbeaten at home and have improved compared to last season. We will need a strong performance.

“This year, we’ve conceded 11 goals in seven games and that’s a lot for Juventus, so we must improve.”
