Juventus are making short work of Genoa, leading 3-0 at half-time with stunning goals from Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic.

The Bianconeri were fresh from their impressive 0-0 draw at Camp Nou, booking a place in the Champions League semi-final against Monaco. Miralem Pjanic was suspended, Juan Cuadrado not 100 per cent fit and Gigi Buffon rested, so Max Allegri reshuffled with Stephan Lichtsteiner moved into the Colombian’s role. Genoa ended their losing streak with the return of Coach Ivan Juric, holding Lazio 2-2, but here missed Mauricio Pinilla, Luca Rigoni and Armando Izzo (banned), Mattia Perin and Adel Taarabt (injured).

Genoa had not won away at Juventus in Serie A since 1991, drawing three of their last 13 visits.

Gonzalo Higuain nodded a free kick inches wide, while Paulo Dybala’s sensational curler from distance skimmed the far post.

Juve did take the lead with a bit of luck, as Claudio Marchisio controlled a chipped Higuain pass over the top and it accidentally ricocheted in off Ezequiel Munoz’s shin.

Moments later, there was little Genoa could do against that goal, as Higuain knocked the ball down for Dybala to complete a give-and-go with Sami Khedira and blast low into the near corner.

Leonardo Bonucci needed a last-ditch tackle to move the through ball, forcing Giovanni Simeone to drill wide, while Higuain’s curler was palmed round the post.

Mandzukic had a cross intercepted, but it bounced back into his path and he curled a stunning strike into the far bottom corner from a tight angle with the inside of the right boot. It was precise, but also hit with extraordinary power and bend.

Marchisio tried to score with a back-heel flick, but Lamanna was fortunate it hit him from point-blank range.

Massimiliano Allegri's squad rotation had little impact on brilliant Juventus as the Serie A pacesetters blew Genoa away in a 4-0 win that moved them 11 points clear of Roma.

A host of first-team regulars such as Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluigi Buffon and Dani Alves were rested following Juve's Champions League progression against Barcelona, but the reigning champions looked no less effective as they put even more pressure on Roma ahead of their trip to Pescara on Monday.

Juve's breakthrough came via an own goal from Genoa centre-back Ezequiel Munoz and the lively Paulo Dybala added to that almost immediately with a confident finish.

Mario Mandzukic netted a glorious goal just before the break, his first in Serie A since early February, with Juve truly cruising against their struggling visitors.

But Leonardo Bonucci gave Mandzukic competition for the best strike of the match, as the defender produced an emphatic finish after a solo run in the 64th minute.

Juve hit the crossbar or post three times before the end of the match, but there was never any risk of Genoa punishing those misses. The visitors remain six points above the drop zone.

In light of Juve's European exploits during the week, Genoa would have been encouraged by Allegri's significant rotation. However, they were unable to hold out for long.

Juve went ahead 17 minutes in as Gonzalo Higuain chipped a clever pass into the danger zone and Munoz accidently nudged the ball into his own goal after Claudio Marchisio had missed it.

Dybala then added a second a minute later, emphatically finding the bottom-right corner from 16 yards after a one-two with Sami Khedira.

Any chance of a Genoa comeback was essentially vanquished just before the break.

Mandzukic saw his initial left-wing cross blocked, but the ball bounced back towards him and the Croatian caressed a sumptuous effort into the bottom-right corner.

Juve appeared to ease off slightly after the break, though at the back they looked as resolute as ever, with Genoa remaining ineffective despite seeing a little more of the ball.

Bonucci was key to Juve's strong display at the back and also made a decisive impact at the other end just after the hour.

Having picked up the ball inside his own half, the centre-back charged forward, darted past a couple of opponents and then sent a fine effort into the roof of the net from 25 yards.

It almost got even worse for Genoa a few moments later, but they were twice saved by the frame of the goal in quick succession, with Marchisio's 20-yard half-volley coming back off the crossbar and Higuain hammering the rebound on to the left-hand post.

Kwadwo Asamoah also hit the post with a 20-yard drive, though it had no impact on the outcome of the match as Juve unsurprisingly strolled home.

Key Opta Facts:

- Paulo Dybala has scored seven goals in his last six home games in all competitions.

- Genoa have gained only one point in the last six Serie A matchdays and have failed to score in five of those matches.

- Juventus have scored the most goals (23) in the first 30 minutes of Serie A matches this season.

- Bonucci is the only defender to have scored at least two goals in each of the last four Serie A seasons.

Juventus marched on towards a sixth straight Scudetto by beating Genoa 4-0, including Mario Mandzukic and Leonardo Bonucci stunners.

Genoa have not won away at Juventus in Serie A since 1991, drawing three of their last 14 visits. It was Juve’s 33rd consecutive Serie A home victory.

After the restart, Simeone nodded a Miguel Veloso free kick over the bar and Bonucci thought he’d added a fourth when volleying in a Dybala free kick at the far post, but it was disallowed for an apparent push in the crowd of players.

Bonucci did get his goal eventually, surging forward through the centre from his own half, realising there was nobody to pass to, so he unleashed a rocket under the bar from the D that dipped viciously.

It somehow was not 5-0, because Marchisio’s half-volley thumped the upright, then it came back out to Higuain, whose follow-up struck the same post.

Kwadwo Asamoah got in on the act, his angled drive clipping the outside of the far post, while Dybala’s delightful spin started his run to fire just wide.

Ex-Genoa midfielder Rolando Mandragora was given his Juventus debut in the final minutes.

Leonardo Bonucci said the 4-0 thrashing of Genoa was “important to send a response after the euphoria” of knocking out Barcelona.

The centre-back scored a spectacular goal to round off their 4-0 victory over Genoa.

“It was a wonderful goal, it’s just a shame that I then wasted another one soon after,” Bonucci told Mediaset Premium.

“It was important to send a response like this after all the euphoria of the week with the Champions League. We proved once again that we are a great squad who wipe out the past and work to build a great future.”

Bonucci also discussed the moment when he was sent to the stands for a pitch-side row with Max Allegri in the Round of 16 with Porto on February 22.

“What happened with Allegri actually made us stronger, both as a group and me personally. It gave us all this extra push for this final period of the season, where a decisive month awaits us and we can try to win everything.”

Allegri: 'No tactical masterpiece'

Max Allegri insists there was no “tactical masterpiece” to transform Mario Mandzukic, but Claudio Marchisio is returning to his best for Juventus.

The Bianconeri shrugged off their Champions League success at eliminating Barcelona with two clean sheets, focusing on Serie A with a 4-0 hammering of Genoa.

“It wasn’t easy, as Genoa had done really well against Lazio to draw 2-2 and had more motivation with the return of their Coach. It was a tough test, but we had the right mentality and approach,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“Genoa were man-marking us tonight and football is really tough if you don’t move around. You need to shake markers off, create space and move the ball around too.

“We don’t have the Scudetto yet, but we need eight points to be mathematically certain. Now we have a few days to prepare for another very difficult trip to Atalanta.

“We made a lot of changes today, but the important thing is that the result does not change.”

Marchisio will have to fill in for suspended Sami Khedira in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final with Monaco.

“He had a good performance tonight and looked good both physically and technically. After a cruciate ligament injury, it takes a long time, so I knew the timing would be crucial and hopefully he can end the season in crescendo.

“We have five days before Bergamo, then another four days until Monaco. I have many options and that means I can keep everyone fresh, which is important, but we also have to keep the enthusiasm to a decent level and not let it become euphoria.

“We haven’t won anything yet, games become a bit strange towards the end of a season and we absolutely must not lower our concentration levels.”

Allegri was asked if he will stay at Juventus if they win the Treble this season.

“It doesn’t depend on winning something or nothing. The most important thing is to have strong motivation and objectives. I am happy at Juventus, the club seems happy with me, but the priority is not the contract right now. We have to focus on winning.”

With Juan Cuadrado out of action, Stephan Lichtsteiner was bumped up to the right side of that supporting trident in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

Mandzukic had a fantastic game and scored a stunner with his powerful curling strike. Was reinventing the centre-forward as a winger his tactical masterpiece?

“I didn’t do any masterpiece. I just thought at a certain stage of the season it was right to bring in a breath of fresh air. We were dragging ourselves along, really, and had been for a while,” shrugged Allegri.

“Mandzukic is so athletically gifted, I don’t know how many kilometres he notched up tonight, but his tactical intelligence is under-estimated and he is really an added bonus in that wide role.

“I want to single out Gonzalo Higuain tonight, as he played a technically perfect game and made a big contribution to the team.”

Juventus throttle Genoa, inch closer

Juventus took a giant leap towards securing an historic sixth consecutive Serie A title by thrashing hapless Genoa 4-0 in Turin on Sunday night.

The 16th-placed Grifone, who headed north boasting a record of one win from 16, were never likely to offer much resistance at Juventus Stadium and so it proved as the Bianconeri ran riot against Ivan Juric's team, pulling 11 points clear at the top of the table in the process.

Ezequiel Munoz was unfortunate to open the floodgates with an own goal midway through the first half, but Paulo Dybala's stunning second was all Juve and the Old Lady soon took complete control.

Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic put the outcome beyond doubt before the interval and the second half saw Leonardo Bonucci score the pick of the goals at the end of a surging run through the middle.

Roma are scheduled to play basement boys Pescara on Monday, but victory on the east coast would only be good enough to restore an eight-point gap, with time and games quickly running out.

The capital-city club's last hope of beating Juve to the Scudetto could come on May 14, when they host Massimiliano Allegri's men at the Stadio Olimpico.

By way of a reminder that Genoa were ostensibly not there to be rolled over, Giovanni Simeone provided an early scare as he punished a Bonucci slip by fizzing the ball just past the far post.

Juve shrugged off the shot across the bows, however, with Gonzalo Higuain going much closer when leaping to nod Dybala's free-kick marginally off target.

Dybala's left-footed sighter was close, too, and then Juve had their opener in the 17th minute.

Munoz was the unfortunate defender caught in the crosshairs as Higuain supplied Claudio Marchisio for a swipe at the ball that clipped a flailing leg and went in.

Before Genoa had time to think, Juve were 2-0 up thanks to Dybala, who played a one-two with Sami Khedira before driving a fierce effort beyond the despairing Eugenio Lamanna.

Juve came knocking again when Higuain got Lamanna working with a swerving drive from 25 metres out, but the Rossoblu keeper could get nowhere near the next attempt on his goal.

Four minutes before the break Mandzukic crossed from the left, with Munoz making a poor clearance that his wily opponent pounced on to find the inside of the far post.

It could have been four heading into half-time as Higuain forced Lamanna into an instinctive save when connecting with Stephan Lichtsteiner's ball into the box.

Juve thought their next goal had been scored eight minutes after the restart, but Bonucci's conversion of a Dybala free-kick was ruled out because of a foul by Mandzukic near the penalty spot.

Any disappointment was short-lived as centre-back Bonucci got his goal in the 64th minute.

The Italy international is known as a ball-playing defender and he thoroughly lived up to that label by searing through the Genoa half before unleashing a strike that left Lamanna standing still.

Juve were not satisfied and Higuain came sniffing for a potential 24th league goal of the season. After Marchisio hit a post with a shot from distance, the Argentinian repeated the trick with the follow-up.

The match dissolved into a training exercise for Juve, who play Monaco in the semifinals of the Champions League in 10 days' time, and even utility man Kwadwo Asamoah -- without a league strike since March 2014 -- managed to find the frame of the goal with a speculative effort.

Juventus-Genoa wasn’t the biggest game on the European schedule on Sunday night. So if you had the desire to go and watch another match being played at the same time, Juventus made sure things were taken care of relatively early in Turin.

A somewhat slow start by the soon-to-be six-time defending Italian champions was a three-goal lead come halftime, as a Genoa own goal kicked things off and then brilliant goals from Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic paved the way to Juventus cruising to a 4-0 win in Turin on Sunday night.

It was a far cry from the first time the two clubs met this season at the Luigi Ferraris.

And something tells me we’re all okay with that.

I know I am.

Let’s be honest, too. It could have been a lot worse for Genoa. Gonzalo Higuain had chances. Claudio Marchisio sent a shot clanging off the post. So did Higuain and Kwadwo Asamoah. Once Genoa handed Juventus the lead with an owl goal and then Dybala quickly doubled the lead with another left-footed beauty, it was clear who was going to be bossing this match.

And it wasn’t the team that beat Juventus 3-1 earlier this season.

Max Allegri talked about the importance of this match for the simple fact of Juventus being on the doorstep of wrapping up yet another Serie A title. And, well, after Giovanni Simeone gave the Juventus defense a scare just a couple of minutes in, it became one-way traffic toward the Genoa goal. Juve were in control, and after the early-game scare Genoa rarely had the chance to venture forward and put forth any kind of danger to get on the scoreboard.

Once the ball started rolling — or deflection off a Genoa defender, if you want to look at it that way — Juventus couldn’t be stopped. Simple as that.

With Roma not playing until Monday, the lead at the top is now at 11 points. ELEVEN POINTS WITH FIVE GAMES TO PLAY. I’d say that’s a pretty good situation for Juventus to be in when it comes to clinching the Scudetto in the next couple of weeks. Probably because it is.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Juventus’ last 33 home games in Serie A: WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
    That’s good, right?
  • Claudio Marchisio wearing the captain’s armband tonight game me a lot of feelings.
  • Neto got the Buffon treatment. He had almost nothing to do all game.
  • That goal from Leonardo Bonucci...not bad at all.
  • The defending and last-ditch tackles from Leonardo Bonucci...not bad at all.
  • The commentators bringing up transfer rumors surrounding Leonardo Bonucci and Manchester City...very, very bad. Quite annoying, too.
  • Who was reminded that former Juventus great Raffaele Palladino was a Genoa player when the starting lineups came out before the game? I’m pretty sure I was.
  • All three of Allegri’s subs — Tomas Rincon, Stefano Sturaro and Rolando Mandragora — all played for Genoa within the last couple of seasons.
  • Who was excited to see Mandragora get five minutes and officially make his Juventus debut over a year after signing with the club? With all the injury issues he’s had over the past 14 or 15 months, I’m sure this was a pretty big personal victory for him. Yes, even though it was five minutes worth of action.
  • Speaking of Juventus teenagers getting playing time, this proved to be the kind of game where having Moise Kean on the bench would have been nice. I’m sure resting Higuain for a little bit of the second half wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world.
  • Mario...guut.
  • Sami Khedira...also guut. The guy has been awesome since the switch to the 4-2-3-1. And if you had to guess before the season that Khedira would be amongst the team leaders in minutes played this season based on his injury history, what would you have said? Because he is amongst the team leaders in minutes played, and it’s safe to say that I am pretty surprised about that. (Not that I’m complaining. Khedira has proven to be a crucial part to this team.)
  • Here’s a stat that surprised the hell out of me: Dybala’s last 14 goals in all competitions have been scored at Juventus Stadium. You’d have to go back to the second day of October to when he scored in a city that’s not called Turin. (It was against Empoli, FWIW.)
  • Who needs El Clasico when you can watch Juventus kicking Genoa’s ass, right?

Juric: 'Gulf between Genoa and Juve'

Ivan Juric was “not disappointed with the performance” from Genoa, despite a 4-0 defeat at Juventus, but admits January sales wrecked their season.

The Grifone had beaten Juve 3-1 at Marassi back in November, but that seemed like a distant memory in Turin.

“I am not disappointed with the performance, as I am aware of the gulf between these two sides,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“They punished us on our first mistake, because we ran no risks at all for the first 20 minutes. The team did all it could and I don’t feel that I have anything to reproach my players for.”

Now Genoa risk being sucked back into the relegation fight, as Crotone and Empoli are putting together a series of positive results.

“We have five finals and must stay united to earn our Serie A safety. I had been happy with the performances up until January, with the intensity and the way we approached the games. I don’t know what happened in the second half of the season.”

It could well be that they sold star names Leonardo Pavoletti, Tomas Rincon and Lucas Ocampos without finding suitable replacements.

Juric was then sacked, only to be recalled after six matches under Andrea Mandorlini.

“Up until January I was enjoying our campaign. We ran into problems for various reasons, such as new players who weren’t in good shape and perhaps I too lacked experience.

“The difference between the Genoa we saw in the first half of the season and the Genoa in the second half is massive. Right now, though, it is time to focus on unity and staying in Serie A, then at the right time we draw some conclusions.

“The next match against Chievo will be one of the most important in Genoa’s recent history.”

A complete performance, Juventus defeated Genoa 4-0 to collect their 33rd consecutive Serie A homd win, edging ever closer to another league title.

Il Secolo XIX had dubbed this match "Mission Impossible" for Genoa noting that only a paranormal phenomenon akin to catching a "wave of green lights" or "finding parking downtown during rush hour" can halt the Old Lady in her tracks.

Playing with confidence and intensity, Juventus approached this game with the right attitude and made their superiority count as they overwhelmed Genoa and struck early to show their intent.

The Rossoblu are famous for their aggression and tried to man mark the Bianconeri to hinder their offensive power but Juve's fluid movements and perfect chemistry helped them to achieve a comprehensive victory.

Positives

After a physically and mentally exhausting week that saw Juventus dump Barcelona out of the Champions League, many expected a low-key performance in Serie A. Instead the Bianconeri chose to play with intensity and desire, determined to show off their superiority from the get go and to achieve another win to help secure domestic success.

Negatives

Truly none to speak of except Juventus should have probably scored more goals considering the plethora of chances they created.

Manager rating out of 10

8 -- Massimiliano Allegri changed the tactics but still ensured his side produced a rampant performance full of confidence and ambition. His fluid and tactically versatile side look unstoppable and desperate not to drop their concentration at this stage of the season.

Player ratings (1-10, with 10 the best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Neto, 6 -- His goal kicks leave a lot to be desired and he rarely looks confident on the ball, especially not when the opponent runs at him in an effort to apply pressure.

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- A composed performer who always transmits a sense of calm, winning his aerial duels and tackling well.

DF Leonardo Bonucci, 7 -- A performance worthy of a few superlatives. He read the game well at the back, scored a seemingly legitimate goal that was chalked off but managed another from an exquisite move that he finished off stupendously.

DF Medhi Benatia, 6 -- Recovered possession and made important clearances ensuring a concentrated and solid performance at the back.

MF Stephan Lichtsteiner, 6 -- Always balanced his duties well, knowing when to prioritise defence and when to push forward to help penetrate.

MF Sami Khedira, 6 -- Another excellent performance by the German who laid off the ball for Paulo Dybala to score, made timely runs forward and added the quality in midfield.

MF Claudio Marchisio, 6 -- The intellectual midfielder seems to be back to his best. His positioning was almost always excellent and his perfect run forward resulted in Juve's first goal. Struck the ball confidently to nearly score at the end of the game and closed down the spaces at the back to ensure defensive solidity.

r202524_1296x729_16-9.jpg&w=738&site=esp
Leonardo Bonucci was one of Juve's top performers against Genoa, doing his ususal outstanding defensive work and chipping in a goal.

MF Kwadwo Asamoah, 6 -- Came very close to adding to the goal scoring tally and tried to offer more in the attacking phase.

FW Paulo Dybala, 7 -- His technique keeps getting better and better as he turned beautifully to overcome his opponents and dribble past the pressure. Combined with Sami Khedira to score Juve's second, he is the mesmeric talent who is crucial between the lines.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 7 -- Was involved in helping to create so many chances but sadly couldn't score one himself. Vital in the run up to the first and second goal, he roamed around the final third relentlessly, creating space and delivering for his teammates.

FW Mario Mandzukic, 7 -- A delightful finish to score the goal, Mandzukic put in another complete performance as he dominated the left flank, worked hard to win back possession and created for his teammates. Tactically smart.

Substitutes

MF Tomas Rincon, 6 -- Came on to ensure strength in midfield, he can always be relied upon to provide security.

MF Stefano Sturaro, N/A -- Controlled the ball quite well but wasn't offered much time to make an impact.

MF Rolando Mandragora, N/A -- Came on and immediately looked to make an impact, delivering a divine pass for Sturaro. Ambitious and confident, he showed his potential despite the few minutes he was offered on the pitch.

Juventus brushed aside Genoa 4-0 to maintain their outstanding record at the Juventus Stadium. After the thrills of the magnificent defensive effort at Nou Camp, the win today seemed almost pedestrian.

After the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri spoke to the media, commending the Genoese team’s efforts.

“It wasn’t easy, as Genoa had done really well against Lazio to draw 2-2 and had more motivation with the return of their Coach. It was a tough test, but we had the right mentality and approach.

“Genoa were man-marking us tonight and football is really tough if you don’t move around. You need to shake markers off, create space and move the ball around too.”

Before the game Allegri had said that this match would prove pivotal for the Scudetto, how did he feel after the win?

“We don’t have the Scudetto yet, but we need eight points to be mathematically certain. Now we have a few days to prepare for another very difficult trip to Atalanta.

“We made a lot of changes today, but the important thing is that the result does not change.”

Claudio Marchisio played almost the full game in the defensive midfielder role, and is expected to start against Monaco in that position with Sami Khedira suspended.

There was the customary question about his Juventus future, especially if they managed to win the treble.

“It doesn’t depend on winning something or nothing. The most important thing is to have strong motivation and objectives. I am happy at Juventus, the club seems happy with me, but the priority is not the contract right now. We have to focus on winning.”

Was his reinvention of Mario Mandzukic this season in the 4-2-3-1 formation his tactical masterpiece?

“I didn’t do any masterpiece. I just thought at a certain stage of the season it was right to bring in a breath of fresh air. We were dragging ourselves along, really, and had been for a while.

Massimiliano Allegri insists Juventus' commanding victory over Genoa was not easy to deliver.

The reigning Italian champions extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table to 11 points by brushing aside hapless Genoa 4-0 at Juventus Stadium, furthering their pursuit of a sixth straight title.

Ezequiel Munoz's own goal set the tone for a one-sided encounter in Turin, with Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Leonardo Bonucci all cutting through the Genoa backline with relative ease to score.

But head coach Allegri was quick to remind those who predicted such a walkover that it had come in the wake of a gruelling Champions League shutout at Barcelona, where on Wednesday night Juve ground out a goalless draw to reach the semifinals.

He said after the match: "The boys played this game in the right way, and it was not easy, because after that Champions League game we were always going to suffer a dip in energy and concentration.

"Instead they demonstrated important qualities including strength of character.

"We are not a perfect machine because there is still room for improvement, but the team are having a really great season.

"Earning 83 points with five matches still to play, reaching the Coppa Italia final and the semi-finals of the Champions League is quite extraordinary."

Juve's run-in will see them tackle three top-half rivals: surprise package Atalanta, city rivals Torino and second-placed Roma, who can reduce the gap to eight points at Pescara on Monday night.

Allegri said: "We're not going to talk about the title because we still have the clash with Roma and as long as things can change, I won't think about the Scudetto.

"Now we have a few days in which to rest and then we must prepare for the match against Atalanta, which will not be easy.

"Between Bergamo and Monaco there are four more days, so we'll have time to recover and prepare for that Champions League semifinal.

"As it stands we've not won anything, so we will follow the path one step at a time."

His Genoa counterpart Ivan Juric told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "We tried to play football against them, but they punished us for the very first mistake we made.

"I can't take anything away from my players, they're giving everything they can at a time like this.

"There are five cup finals left to play. We'll have to fight to stay up and it will be really difficult."

Genoa are six points clear of the relegation zone but have won only one game since mid-December.

Juventus returned to the always-welcoming Juventus Stadium after their heroic exploits in midweek against Barcelona. It was time to welcome Genoa to our home ground in a Sunday evening Serie A fixture. Juve manager Max Allegri was cautious before the game — especially because if what happened last time around against Genoa — and stressed that the game would be pivotal in deciding the Scudetto race as we reach the season climax. The game may have been pivotal, but the performance made it look like an exhibition match: the Bianconeri blitzed past Genoa 4-0 thanks to goals from Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic, Leonardo Bonucci, and a Ezequiel Muñoz own-goal.

Allegri made a grand total of six changes from the game against Barcelona, and although the team exuded confidence and consistency in the opening period of the game, the visitors almost took a surprise lead in the fourth minute. An untimely slip by Bonucci allowed the ball to reach Giovanni Simeone, who advanced towards the box before unleashing a shot on his weaker left foot that trickled harmlessly wide of the target. Juventus brushed off the early scare and quickly took control of the match. Dybala delivered a pinpoint cross to from the free kick onto the head of Gonzalo Higuaín, but the striker wastefully headed his effort wide after being completely free in front of goal for the chance. The architect Dybala almost turned goalscorer when he fizzed a stinging left-footed shot just wide of the far post a few minutes later.

The opening goal came just a minute later, though (just as my stream died), through the Muñoz own goal. Some nice passing play by the home side and phenomenal false-nine play by Higuaín allowed Claudio Marchisio to storm into the space created by the Argentine who then chipped the ball towards the midfielder. Marchisio couldn’t quite reach the ball, but that didn’t matter as the defender Muñoz unluckily shinned the ball into his own net for the opening goal: 1-0!

Just two minutes later, Juventus found a quick-fire double and banged in the second goal of the evening. Higuain picked up a long ball that was hoofed upfield from defense and played in Dybala. The little wizard played a deft one-two with Sami Khedira inside the box and fired a clever shot to the near post and past the goalkeeper: 2-0!

Juventus FC v Genoa CFC - Serie APhoto by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images

Genoa looked to hit back straight away as Simeone picked up a neat pass from Raffaele Palladino and stormed into the box. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, though, Bonucci slid in with an unbelievable sliding tackle to not only deny the chance, but also win a goal kick in the process! J

uve took that little scare as a warning, though, and didn’t allow Genoa an inch of play afterwards. It was utter domination by the home side as the confidence from the end-of-the-season climax was just oozing through every player. This confidence turned into yet another goal for the Bianconeri courtesy of Mr. No Good Mandzukic. A brilliant passing triangle on the left side of the pitch saw Dybala release the Croatian with a fantastic through ball and sped Mandzukic free down the wing. After a loose ball from his poor cross into the box dropped into his path, he didn’t have a second of doubt in his mind and banged in a phenomenal right-footed shot into the far corner: 3-0!

Quite amazingly, Juve just continued to pour forward relentlessly in search of more goals, though Marchisio’s deft flick was well stopped by goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna. Still, though, 3-0 at halftime was a fantastic scoreline!

The home side needed just over five minutes in the second half to fire in the fourth goal, although it was (harshly) ruled out for a foul. Dybala crossed a great ball into the box towards the far post where Bonucci met the cross exquisitely on the volley for the goal, but the referee pulled back the play for an infraction in the box. Bonucci must have been listening to some Aaliyah before the game because he would see just a few minutes later that if at first you don’t succeed, you should just dust yourself off and try again. After picking up the ball inside his own half, he embarked on a remarkable run straight through the gaping chasm inside the Genoa defense and toward goal. As the defenders stood off him, Bonucci unleashed a rocket of a shot past Lamanna to mark his brilliant solo run with a goal: 4-0!

‘Cuz if at first you don't succeed,

Dust yourself off, and try again

You can dust it off and try again!

It was raining goals in the Juventus Stadium as the Bianconeri was in an extraordinarily swaggering mood on the night. The fans will be wondering how they were denied the fifth goal just a few minutes later though as some nice holdup play by Mandzukic (or was it Higuaín?) resulted in Marchisio picking up the bouncing ball on the edge of the box. Il Principino wasn’t deterred by the fact that the ball was on his weaker left foot because he sent an unstoppable half-volleyed effort crashing against the inside of the left crossbar and back into play. From the rebound, Higuaín then saw his own half-volleyed shot bounce off the outside of the post and out for a goal kick! A remarkable passage of play that somehow didn’t result in the fifth goal for the home side.

It turned into a game of “crossbar/woodwork challenge” in the second half as Kwadwo Asamoah joined the fun as well and saw his low left-footed drive kiss the outside of the post in the 77th minute. Genoa were being absolutely run ragged by a rampant Juve side! The last notable, and lovely, piece of action came from the danger man Dybala: thanks to a superb, deft drop of the shoulder and quick spin around his axis, he left Miguel Veloso for dead and bore down on goal. Unfortunately, his left-footed shot went well wide of the target, but his swivel-and-burst action was a joy to behold. The match ended with a thoroughly convincing 4-0 scoreline and saw Juventus momentarily extend their Serie A lead to 11 points!

Le Pagelle

NETO 8 – A few easy saves aside, it sure was the relaxing game for Neto to come in for Buffon.

BONUCCI 9 – Extraordinary goal by Messi Bonucci in the second half and he was at his brilliant best tonight!

BENATIA 8 – Not really the type of game where he can stake a serious claim for being understudy to the established, starting defenders because he basically had nothing to do all game. Still, solid and dependable by the Moroccan.

BARZAGLI 8 – Ditto for Barzagli. The defensive trio did the little work they had to do in excellent fashion.

LICHTSTEINER 8 – Although Laxalt comfortably had more pace than the Swiss, he was still intelligent and solid down the right wing.

MARCHISIO 8.5 – Woow, what a shot that was in the second half! That deserved a goal in itself really. Still, Il Principino made sure the midfield was locked down in tandem with Khedira.

Juventus FC v Genoa CFC - Serie A
‘Damn I look good’

KHEDIRA 8 – Didn’t put a foot wrong all game and was subbed off early to get a deserved rest.

ASAMOAH 8 – Due to Genoa’s curiously lopsided formation, Asamoah had plenty of space down his wing and never really got into trouble. Almost picked up a goal in the second half as well.

DYBALA 9 – It was all so easy for Dybala today. In games like these, you really see how he enjoys himself!

MANDZUKIC 8.5 – It’s been a long time since the Croatian has scored, but he won’t care one bit. The selfless striker played a hybrid left-wing and central role and, as usual, gave his brilliant 100% for the team.

HIGUAÍN 8.5 – Was close to getting his goal, but his holdup play was excellent again as usual. Especially his false-nine movement for the opening goal was fantastically intelligent.

Subs

RINCÓN 7.5 – Playing against his former side, he kept things simple in midfield with Marchisio and continues to show his utility as a backup in central midfield.

STURARO N/A – Buzzed around actively in the final 8 minutes of the game

MANDRAGORA N/A – The youngster came on for his debut with five minutes to spare.

Manager

ALLEGRI 9 – It looked like a bit of an odd tactical switch when we saw the starting XI lineup in a 3-4-1-2 formation, but it all worked perfectly fine as Juventus were utterly relentless. There was no drop in concentration or form: everything was perfect. Not only that, but six starters also got a well-deserved rest at a crucial point in the season.

Tactical Analysis – Lopsided

The Genoa starting XI that played in the andata fixture was significantly different from the one we saw on Sunday night, mostly due to transfers. Although it looked like a straightforward 3-4-3 formation on paper, it was actually a curiously lopsided 3-4-1-2/3-4-3 due to Ntcham’s positioning and Palladino’s central drifts from the left wing.

Ntcham here clearly centrally while Lazovic pushed forward high up the pitch.

Lazovic often pushed forward very bravely despite the fact he had little to no protection on that wing. This also meant that Muñoz was left with an awfully large amount of ground to cover on the counterattack. In fairness, this was somewhat understandable given that Dybala chose to occupy the other side of the pitch and Mandzukic, for all his brilliance, isn’t necessarily a gung-ho winger. Better yet, given that Juventus focused 37% percent their attacks down their right wing, you can understand that Genoa chose to put defensive emphasis down that side.

Note the space between the Juventus defense and midfield: the danger zone for any trequartista! Ntcham is circled and receiving the ball while Lazovic is wide right (also circled)

Ntcham really should have been the key man for Genoa as he was playing a quasi-trequartista role against a two-man Juventus central midfield. However, he was reduced to mostly hopeful efforts from range and very little time on the ball. He gradually dropped deeper and deeper though as the match progressed and Genoa grew increasingly resigned to a thorough dismantling at the Juventus Stadium.

Sorry about all the white spots, all those darn ads on my stream were a painful sight for the eyes. Nevertheless, the Genoa “front three” is circled, with Ntcham again very centrally, Palladino defending the left wing, and poor Simeone drifting helplessly in the center of the pitch.

The more time passed, the less of a tactical battle the game became. This was understandable though as Genoa realized that they were destined for a convincing defeat to extend their rotten run of form in the league.

Genoa (blue dots) in a 3-4-3ish formation. Curiously, seemed to be set up in their own quasi 4-4-2/3-5-2ish formation. Fluid formations by both teams then.

Imperious

Based on this game, it would almost sound like utter delusion to say that this Genoa side beat Juventus 3-1 a few months ago, especially given that six of the Juventus starters were rested today. Yet this Bianconeri side was an absolute, phenomenal joy to watch and you could see that as each goal went in, the players were just having more and more fun on the pitch. Despite the inevitable ups-and-downs throughout the course of a season, I feel extremely privileged to be able to witness this great group of players go from strength to strength every game. The mentality, the unity, the sacrifice, and, of course, the inevitable victories of this team are all just a sight to behold. When it all clicks, it all sure does click.

Forza Juve!

Allegri says Juventus 'are not a perfect machine'

as they chase down domestic and European honours

The demanding coach in Turin still sees room for improvement from his side,

even if they are on track to win a historic treble in the 2016-17 campaign.

Massimiliano Allegri feels Juventus are not a "perfect machine" just yet but is delighted with the way their season has panned out so far.

The reigning Italian champions beat Genoa 4-0 on Sunday to move 11 points clear of second-placed Roma in the race for the Serie A title, having booked their ticket to the Champions League semi-finals in midweek.

Juve had already secured a place in the Coppa Italia final and Allegri is over the moon with their 2016-17 campaign to date, but warned they have not achieved anything yet.

"We are not a perfect machine because we still have room for improvement, but the team really is having a great season," Allegri told the club's official website.

"It is absolutely extraordinary to be on 83 points with five matches to play and to have qualified for the Coppa Italia final and the Champions League semi-finals.

"It is still too early to be talking about the title. We have to remember that we still have to play Roma and until it is mathematically assured we cannot talk about the Scudetto. We have a couple of days to rest now and then we will focus on Atalanta, which will not be an easy game.

"After that, we have four days before the Monaco match, so that is plenty of time to recover and prepare for the clash.

"We have won nothing yet and have to take it one match at a time."

After eliminating the giants of Barcelona from the Champions League on Wednesday night, Juventus returned to domestic action in their bid to capture yet another Serie A title. Max Allegri made six changes to the side that played during the week, with the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro left out. One player who wasn’t rested, however, was Paulo Dybala. The in-form Argentinian was selected to play in his favoured role just behind his international compatriot Gonzalo Higuain, who also started despite playing the majority of the game at the Camp Nou.

There was a slight hint of fatigue from Juve for the opening 20 minutes, as the dreaded European hangover looked to be setting in. Genoa were easily beating the high press, and were comfortable in possession in midfield. Giovanni Simeone had a half chance to open the scoring inside three minutes following a Leonardo Bonucci slip but he scuffed his shot. For the Bianconeri, they were slow and without direction on the offensive side, with them relying on Dybala to create something out of nothing. The midfield continuously looked for the in-form attacker to get on the ball, as he moved between the opposition’s back four and midfield to find space. He was fouled a couple of times and kicked hard the others, resembling that of a man with a target on his back.

Genoa knew all too well the threat that Dybala posed to their chances of escaping Turin with a point. Even his set-pieces were dangerous as two of his free kicks could and almost did lead to goals. Higuain should have nodded in from one, but missed from point-blank range while in the second half Bonucci’s header did find the back of net after a Dybala free kick. The referee, however, pulled it back for infringement and the goal was disallowed. It’s an underrated aspect of Dybala’s skill level.

Most people view his trickery and quick turn of speed as his most impressive qualities, but even with a dead ball situation, he can create opportunities for Juve. It’s another reason why he’s arguably the most valuable player in the side.

As the Serie A leaders began to grow into the game, Dybala was the focal point of attack. He almost opened the scoring with a long range shot early in the first half after he dropped his shoulder, turned and shot just wide of Eugenio Lamanna’s goal. It wasn’t a successful attempt by Dybala, but it was still a warning sign of what was ahead for Genoa. After Ezequiel Munoz’s own goal gave Juve the lead on the 17-minute mark, Dybala would double that lead just a minute later. Good play by Higuain saw Dybala control the ball neatly in the box before a one-two with Sami Khedira set him up nicely for a left footed strike that found the bottom of the net. The Juventus Stadium howled in awe of another piece of magic from their number 21, but in all truth, it’s what they have come to expect of the magician.

Dybala completed four dribbles, had four shots and made 51 passes, with most of them coming in the final third, per whoscored.com. He also led all midfielders and attackers with 68 touches, a clear sign of the offensive responsibility handed to him.

In the second half, with Juve 4-0 up and strolling to another three points that pushes them ever closer to the league title, Dybala refused to rest on his laurels. He took down a long ball forward beautifully with his left foot before laying off a pass for Kwadwo Asamoah. It barely troubled Lamanna, but that deft touch from Dybala was succulent. A while after, he raced past the tiring Genoa midfield, before seeing his effort skim past the post. The shot was a clear sign that the energy exhausted between this game and the one in Barcelona only four days prior had started to affect the 23-year-old.

He completed the full 90 minutes, perhaps somewhat unnecessarily, but the home crowd won’t complain at being able to witness such a superb performance for the longevity of the match.

Atalanta will reportedly undergo a Press silence before they take on Juventus on Friday evening.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men are gunning for Europe, and face a difficult test when they host the Bianconeri at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

According to CalcioNews24, the decision originates from when the players gave multiple interviews before they took on Inter in mid-March and ended up losing 7-1.

Whilst there may be some words from the Coach pre-match, it is expected that the club will deny any requests from journalists to speak to the players.

Caldara: ‘Focused on Atalanta’

Mattia Caldara thanks Juventus for signing him but “I’m only thinking of Atalanta” ahead of Friday’s game.

The Bianconeri confirmed the signing of the young centre-back in January, but will remain on loan in Bergamo until the end of next season.

The Orobici face a home game against the Old Lady on Friday night, but Caldara is focused on helping his current club to reach Europe.

“They [Juventus] are the club who have believed in me and invested in me,” the 22-year-old told l’Eco di Bergamo.

“I’m glad and I thank them, but now I’m only thinking of Atalanta. I’ll give everything, because we want to give the fans this dream.

“It will be a difficult game, because we’re facing the strongest team in Europe. We’re doing well, but so are Juve and we’ll try to cause them problems, then if they’re better than us they’ll win.

“We’ll do a week of intense preparation, we’ll watch videos to try and understand the movements of their strikers, even if they’re very strong and unpredictable.

“We still need to pick up a lot of points, but our attitude is the right one. We’re ready to give our best in the next five games.”

What Next for Juventus: Champions League winner’s medals?

Gianluigi Buffon has won nine Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia twice with Juventus but has yet to lift the Champions League trophy.

Twice a runner up with the Old Lady in 2003 and 2015, the 39-year-old goalkeeper now has a great chance to put the final piece of his puzzle in place on June 3rd.

And, having taken care of the mighty Barcelona 3-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, there seems no reason why Juve should not go on and win Europe’s elite club competition this time around.

Barca had already shown just what they are capable of doing when mounting the most amazing comeback ever seen in the event to overturn a 4-0 first-leg deficit and move past Paris Saint Germain in the last 16, but Massimiliano Allegri’s charges were too wily to allow history to repeat itself.

They are in line to win yet another Scudetto and have the players and mindset to take on Europe’s best.

A semi-final with Monaco awaits and it would not be doing them a disservice to suggest that the principality club are the surprise package of the last four.

Leonardo Jardim’s men managed a 6-3 aggregate triumph over Borussia Dortmund in a tie that was clearly affected by the bomb attack on the Germans’ bus.

They are fighting for silverware on three fronts, with a Coupe de France semi-final against PSG on April 26 while the duo are embroiled in a battle for the Ligue 1 crown.

They are level on 80 points but Monaco have a game in hand and it is open to debate if the fixture pile-up will have any say in proceedings.

Juventus are favourites to win the tie but Monaco are a form team and, having punched above their weight to date, there may well be more to come. Be sure to check out the betting tips at Bethut for all the best prices and markets available to see if the French side can keep their run going.

An all-Madrid affair beckons in the other semi-final and, despite Real’s dominance this season, it is too close to call.

Zinedine Zidane’s side have a chance to win their first La Liga title since 2012 but will be pushed all the way by Barca, especially after the Nou Camp giants beat them in El Clasico to move to the top of the table.

Atletico have rallied to third with seven wins from eight league games and will not fear taking on their city rivals over the two legs.

They did what they had to against a resurgent Leicester City in the last eight and coach Diego Simeone showed that he can mastermind a backs-to-the-wall defensive display if necessary.

Los Rojiblancos will surely look to stifle the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale at the Bernabeu to make sure they are still in the tie when the sides do battle at Vicente Calderon Stadium on May 10.

Real have won the competition 11 times and triumphed in two of the past three seasons but do they have it in themselves to keep it going to the end of the campaign?

They needed extra time and another Ronaldo hat-trick to get past Bayern Munich and it remains to be seen how much that has taken out of the players as they fight for two trophies.

With Barca and Bayern gone, it leaves Real as the dominant team left in the competition but it might just be that Juventus are the hungriest of them all for success and Buffon gets to lift the famous trophy in Wales.

‘Monaco will rest players for Juventus’

Monaco Coach Leandro Jardim will play a weakened team in the Coupe de France, ahead of next week’s Juventus game.

The principality side are top of Ligue 1 and face the Bianconeri in the Champions League semi-finals, so will rotate heavily for the cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

“We don’t have a big squad,” Jardim explained to reporters ahead of tomorrow’s game.

“It won’t be possible to play with the same players in Paris. We have a very busy fixture list and I won’t take any risks with tired players.

“Will I play youth team players? I’ll look at the options I have and what the rules allow to see what’s possible. We also need to think about recovery this week because we have a very busy May.”

The Fédération Française de Football requires that at least seven of the 18 players named on the team sheet [11 players plus seven substitutes] must have played one of the last two official games.

That means that Jardim can, in theory, call 11 players who haven’t even been in the squad for the previous two games.

There is no obligation for any of the seven players called for previous games to play.

On This Day: Juventus secure five-in-a-row

Napoli’s defeat to Roma 12 months ago saw Juventus match Torino’s record of five Scudetti in a row.

The Bianconeri had beaten Fiorentina 2-1 on the Sunday night, meaning Maurizio Sarri’s side had to beat the Giallorossi in the Monday game to keep their title hopes alive.

However, an 89th-minute Radja Nainggolan striker condemned the Partenopei to defeat and assured the Old Lady retained her crown with three games to spare.

Retaining the Scudetto was a remarkable feat for the Turin giants, as they took just one point from their opening three games, their worst return since 1962.

Indeed, Massimiliano Allegri’s side were 12th on October 28, 11 points from the top of the table.

Juventus-scarves490epa.jpg

A remarkable run followed though, with Juventus winning 24 of their next 25 Serie A games and retaining the title they’d held since 2012.

It was the second time Juve had managed to win five on the spin, having also won the Scudetto every year between 1931 and 1935.

City rivals Torino also achieved the feat, though they would surely have had a longer streak had Il Grande Torino not tragically been killed in the Superga air disaster in 1949.

Inter have also won five in a row, but that achievement remains controversial as they were awarded the first due to the Calciopoli scandal, having originally finished 15 points behind in third.

Juventus have the chance to set the all-time record this season, as they currently sit eight points ahead of Roma with five games to play.

That means another two wins will be enough for the Bianconeri, as long as they avoid defeat at Roma in Week 37.

Tavecchio: 'Juve can win Treble'

Federation President Carlo Tavecchio believes Juventus are on track for a Treble this season, but “absolutely must not underestimate Monaco.”

The Bianconeri are eight points clear at the top of Serie A, will face Lazio in the Coppa Italia Final and Monaco for the Champions League semi-final.

“Juventus have everything it takes to win the Treble, but they absolutely must not underestimate Monaco,” FIGC President Tavecchio told Tuttomercatoweb.

“It is a difficult game and they can’t approach it in the wrong way, as the French side are hungry for victory. I still think Max Allegri’s men, thanks to the experience earned and their qualities, have everything to go through.

“Naturally, we all hope they continue their Champions League progress. An Italian winning the Champions League would be huge for our football movement, as well as our ranking.

“It’d improve our situation even more, having already earned a fourth place for the Champions League starting from the next season.”

Many of the Juventus players also represent Italy under new Coach Giampiero Ventura, who is bringing through a new generation of Azzurri.

“We are working well and doing a great deal. Unfortunately, we have Spain in our group and they are a complicated opponent, but we really want to beat them. We intend to surpass this obstacle and we’ll see what happens.

“I think we’ve proved Ventura was the best choice to replace Antonio Conte.”

Glik: 'Monaco can reach the final'

Monaco defender Kamil Glik insists his side can beat Juventus and progress to the Champions League final.

The former Torino captain warned against the dangers of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain, and admitted he'd never won at the Juventus stadium before.

"It will not be easy but there’s no pressure on us," the defender told Tuttosport.

"I think every team was hoping to draw Monaco, but look how far we’ve come. I believe that Monaco can get to the final, we will try to surprise everyone again.

"For now we put Juventus to one side, as we have other important games ahead.

"Dybala and Higuain are very important and we will try to contain them. I have never won at Juventus stadium but certain events have stopped me.

"We'll try to win in order to go through, but it is early to think about the return leg."

The Polish defender then referred to a picture he posted on his Facebook page last week that provoked an angry reponse from Juventus fans. The post showed a picture of a strong tackle from Glik when at Torino on the then Juventus player Emanuele Giaccherini.

"A piece of my heart is still in Turin. After the draw lots of my former Torino teammates contacted me.

"The photo with Giaccherini? These controversies make me laugh, I did not stir up anything, but I remember that game."

Lippi: 'Juve can win the treble'

Former Juventus boss Marcello Lippi expressed his belief that Juventus would win the treble, adding 'why not say it?'.

The World Cup winner also insisted that Italy had 'finally achieved its worth in Europe' with the current Bianconeri side who now face Monaco in the Champions League semi-final.

"This Juve does not leave anything to the others,” the China Coach told Gazzetta dello Sport. “The Italian supremacy is not in question, finally we have achieved our worth even in Europe. They deserved success against big teams in recent years.

"They have eliminated Real Madrid, fought on a par with Bayern going out by chance, were superior to Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Atletico Madrid. Now they are ready for the Champions League. This is a Juve treble: why not say it?

"Never before has there been a legitimate belief in it. The league is almost done, they are in the the Coppa Italia final and also the Champions League is not impossible.

"It would not be being presumptuous, but to beconvinced of their own strength. Italian football is always there, but three years ago it looked like Bayern, Real and the others were far away: now Juve are really at the top."

Before the first leg with Monaco, Max Allegri's side face Atalanta on Friday.

“Juve are hungry, they are focused on every game as if it were a final.  Allegri did not say by chance that Juventus-Genoa was decisive for the Scudetto.

"But Atalanta have strength, aggression, quality and [Alejandro] Gomez. They believe in the Europa League and will compete for fourth place with Lazio. The secret to Atalanta is in quality of the people working there. During my time there was the today’s President, [Antonio] Percassi.

"[Cesare] Prandelli coached the Primavera and Mino Favini was the youth team boss. And it was in Zingonia where there was a real football atmosphere, all positive. We all trained there, the first team, the youth team and even children."

Tacconi: 'Juve already in the Final'

Stefano Tacconi believes Juventus “have already won the Scudetto and reached the Champions League Final.”

The former goalkeeper has absolute faith in Max Allegri’s chances of doing the Treble this season ahead of a continental semi-final with Monaco.

“The other teams have obstacles, not Juventus, who are already champions of Italy. They’ve already won the Scudetto and can afford a slip-up with Atalanta when there are only five rounds to go,” Tacconi told ItaSportPress.it.

“I think we can say they’ve already reached the Champions League Final too. Everyone’s thinking about the Treble now and the team certainly has everything to win it.

“This year, for a series of reasons, the Bianconeri have no rivals. The others have to tremble in fear.”

Verratti: ‘If I played for Monaco…’

http://www.football-italia.net/101725/verratti-‘if-i-played-monaco…’

Apr 27, 2017

Tifosibianconeri English page - CLICK HERE

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has criticised Monaco for resting players in the Coupe de France ahead of the Juventus game.

The principality side played youth team players in the semi-final last night, as they are top of Ligue 1 and face the Bianconeri in the Champions League on Wednesday.

PSG thrashed Leandro Jardim’s side 5-0 to move into the final, but Verratti wasn’t impressed with the attitude of their opponents.

“I enjoyed it because we qualified for the final,” the Italian international told Le Figaro.

“After that, if I were a Monaco player I’d be annoyed with my club because I always want to win. It’s not every day you get the chance to play a semi-final, it’s a tough road to get there.

“If you get there, it’s good to compete, not play youth players. It was a bit much, it’s not very respectful to the Coupe de France.

“That’s their choice, but I really think I’d be annoyed with my club if I were one of the Monégasques.

“Monaco are having a great League season, there’s nothing to say about that. They’re also doing really well in the Champions League.

“We’re happy for them, because it’s not easy for a French club to get to the semis, I hope they get to the final and - why not? - win the trophy.

“They’re having a fantastic season, particularly in Ligue 1, it’s not easy to set this kind of pace. We’ve won almost all of our matches in 2017 but it’s really difficult to catch Monaco.

“If we can’t win the League we’ll congratulate Monaco and think about next season.

“Do I still believe in the title after Monaco won at Lyon? I don’t know… the way Lyon played was a bit… it wasn't very normal.

“Sometimes I saw the Lyon players laughing on the pitch, that wasn’t the case when we met them. But I think if the Monégasques win the title in the end they’ll have deserved it.”

Verratti has urged PSG to sign star players this summer, but sought to clarify his comments.

“We know we’re not on the level of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona. It’s true, we can’t lie.

“But with the arrival of one or two players of a very good level we good make this team grow even more. It’s only been four or five years we’re trying to make a great team, that’s not that long in football.

“Some teams take longer to acquire the right mentality and experience. If one or two strong players arrive then it would definitely help the team.”

Atalanta v Juventus

Serie A Week 34 –  Friday, 28th April – 19:45 GMT – Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia

juventus

Juventus

Juventus have become automatic at home against the lowly teams, and the trend did not buckle last Sunday against Genoa, who they battered in the first half. A couple of season ago, the opponents used to play the game of their life when they visited Turin: while that continues to be the case on road games for the Bianconeri, at times the visiting sides look defeated from the kick-off at the Stadium. Obviously the 33 home wins in a row play a big role in that.

Next up, the very dangerous Atalanta. It will be on Friday night, despite us playing on Wednesday in Champions League, so plenty of time to replenish the tank after what should be a demanding game. In the Genoa tilt, Massimiliano Allegri dared using 4-2-3-1 with Andrea Barzagli as right back and Stephan Lichtsteiner as right winger, so that proves that he is willing to try everything to keep fielding his new beloved scheme.

Thanks to the five-day turnaround and to the importance of the game, there will basically be no rotation. In the pre-game presser, the coach announced that Gianluigi Buffon, Dani Alves, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro will start. That is an interesting tweak, considering that maybe Stephan Lichtsteiner would have been better suited for a game where the right back will be forced to defend a lot.

Unfortunately, Sami Khedira is suspended for the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, so he will certainly be in the XI. His partner should be Miralem Pjanic, but I would not put it past the coaching staff to field Claudio Marchisio, who will start against Monaco, to give him an extended run before the big game. After struggling with conditioning for a while, he showed flashes of his older self against Genoa. This is basically the only doubt regarding the lineup.

This time, the offensive line will be the usual one, signalling that Allegri wants the squad to go at full-throttle. As we know, the alternatives to the Juan Cuadrado-Paulo Dybala-Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain attack have been less than satisfying and finding one or more option will be the number one priority heading into the summer transfer window.

It looks like it will only a matter of time until Massimiliano Allegri signs an extension to stay at the club. After some doubts emerged early in the year, not stemming from the club, but from the coach himself who maybe wanted to try a new experience, it seems that both parties agree that it will be better to stay the course. I also think that the new tactic has also freshened things up, giving the manager new motivations.

Probable lineup:

4-2-3-1: Buffon; Alves, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic; Cuadrado, Dybala, Mandzukic; Higuain.

Injuries:

Pjaca (knee), Rugani

Suspensions:

 None

Atalanta

Atalanta are having a fantastic season and, with Inter and Milan struggling in the last match days, they are the favourites to grab a Europa League spot. That would be a terrific achievement. They are currently in fifth position with a five-point lead over Rossoneri and a seven-point one over Inter. The sixth one will also grant qualification to European football, unless Lazio completely fell apart.

Barring the embarrassing 7-1 against Inter, where they were maybe a little too daring in their approach and paid the price in a big way, they are undefeated since January 22nd. They have lost only thrice at home this season, in the early portion of the schedule, oddly against Udinese, Lazio and Palermo. They have never been defeated at Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in 2017 and they dropped points only twice, against Sassuolo and Fiorentina. They have beaten Inter, Napoli and Roma on their turf.

It will be a tough match mainly because of their tireless intensity and pressure. They try to smother the opponents and keep coming. They have playmakers on both flanks, Andrea Conti and Leonardo Spinazzola are dynamos, and Papu Gomez is a pest who wanders around the pitch trying to find ways to fool the opponents. Andrea Petagna does not score a lot, but he is a handful because of his size and always draws a couple of defenders, opening the room for the sneaky cuts especially by Jasmin Kurtic, who is having a career year scoring wise, and Remo Freuler. They are also very dangerous on set pieces: they are the team with the most goals scored by defenders, with Mattia Caldara leading the pack.

When so many players are thriving, that means that the coach is doing a fantastic job and Gian Piero Gasperini deserves most of the credit. I guess this is what his football can accomplish when he can work with the same group for an entire season and the management does not sell the best players in midseason like it often happened at Genoa.

Since he has found the right men for the job, the coach has not rotated the XI at all, unless he absolutely needed to because of injuries and disqualifications. Franck Kessie was subbed of early in the previous game because of an ankle sprain and he is suffering from that. He is not totally out but his status is questionable: Alberto Grassi or Bryan Cristante would take his place if he was not fit enough. Gomez was at risk because of a knock, but he still played and had almost a full week of practice.

I wonder if the Inter game will leave it’s mark: at San Siro, they were too reckless and their enemy feasted on the counters. Juventus rarely use this weapon because the opponent usually sit back, but with Cuadrado and Dybala both on the pitch, it would be a risky proposition by Atalanta to deploy an all-out attack mode. On this front, Gasperini reportedly practiced during the week a Petagna-less lineup: a 3-4-3 with Gomez as false-nine, Kurtic wide left and the wingback Hans Hateboer wide right. It would be a more remissive look to use from the start and resist to Juventus’ fierce early assaults.

Juventus have won rather decisively in the last eight trips to Bergamo: so much has changed and improved for Atalanta this season, hopefully this aspect will remain the same as the last years.

Probable lineup:

3-4-1-2: Berisha; Toloi, Caldara, Masiello; Conti, Kessie, Freuler, Spinazzola; Kurtic; Petagna, Gomez.
