For those of you who wanted to see Juventus goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon walk the team out of the Juventus Stadium tunnel for the first time in 2017 on Sunday night, you might not want to get your hopes up. Or, well at all.

At his first pre-match press conference of the new year, Juve manager Max Allegri ruled out Buffon for Sunday’s game against Bologna in Turin due to illness. As a result, not only will somebody else be wearing the captain’s armband for the first game of the calendar year, but backup goalkeeper Neto will get his first playing time in nearly a month after starting Juve’s final Champions League group stage game against Dinamo Zagreb on Dec. 7.

Max, in English, please. Not all of us around here speak fluent Italian like you do.

So that settles that. Buffon is sick and Neto — who has started three games and made four appearances overall — will be playing in his place for Sunday’s game against Bologna.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world, all things considered. Juventus has their first Coppa Italia fixture of the season on Wednesday night against Atlanata. Based on how Allegri has played it over the years, his backup goalkeeper is always going to be playing in goal whenever the Coppa Italia arrives. So, put two and two together and you realize that Neto was going to be playing on Wednesday regardless of Buffon’s health status.

And seeing as Neto’s appearances are pretty much happening once a month this season, playing in back-to-back games can eliminate any kind of rust that might be there. Not that he’s played poorly after going weeks without stepping in goal, but the more you play, the more comfortable you feel, they like to say.

Donadoni: 'Bologna can trouble Juve'

http://www.football-italia.net/96526/donadoni-bologna-can-trouble-juve

Jan 7, 2017

Roberto Donadoni insists Bologna “won’t just defend against Juventus, as we want to cause them problems.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

“If you just defend in Turin, then you will concede sooner or later. Instead we want to prove that we can cause them problems,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I haven’t decided on my line-up yet, as I still have a couple of doubts on players who haven’t been at their best over the last few days. I’ll make my decisions after tomorrow morning’s training session.

“What is most important is that my players believe in themselves. We must be aggressive, determined and intense, putting our qualities on show.

“If we just sit back and defend, we will concede, so I see attack as the best form of defence. Juventus have such quality that you cannot get away with anything, so the performance is paramount.

“I expect my men to have a positive attitude, not worrying about conceding so much as trying to create problems for Juve.”

The Rossoblu spent the winter break training in Catania, hoping for a warmer climate than up north, but instead it has been snowing in Sicily as well.

“We worked well in Catania, considering the situation. We had expected it to be more forgiving, but instead it might be colder in the south than in the north right now. We were even accompanied by the snow, but I’m satisfied with what we were able to do anyway.”

Simone Verdi and Umar Sadiq are still on the treatment table, while Saphir Taider is on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Juventus v Bologna: Preview

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/preview?gameId=461111

Jan 7, 2017

Defender Andrea Barzagli is confident Juventus can pick up where they left off in Serie A as they host Bologna this weekend looking to extend their three-match winning run in the league.

The defending champions suffered a penalties defeat to AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup final in their last match before the winter break and are hoping to bounce back as they return to league action on Sunday.

Barzagli, who was an unused substitute against Milan last time out, returns to the starting line-up following a shoulder injury and is hoping to banish thoughts of that loss as Juve look to build on their lead at the top of the table.

The 35-year-old Italy international told www.juventus.com: ``My shoulder has mended up quickly and I'm in good shape now, but the most important thing was to make a full recovery.

``In football you're always looking forwards, which is what we're doing, even if there remains a sour taste after missing out on the opportunity to win silverware.

``I'm not of the opinion that defeats are ever a good thing and it's important never to fall into the bad habit of losing. We need to remember that Juventus must always be aiming for victory.''

Barzagli remains confident Juve will be ready to take on 15th-placed Bologna after a fortnight off.

He added: ``The first game back after the holidays is never easy both from a physical standpoint, as you've stopped training for a week, but the main challenge is a mental one, regaining full focus and recapturing that winning mentality that's part and parcel of playing for this club.

``We've worked very hard this week in Vinovo and prepared in the best possible way for taking on Bologna on Sunday.

``We're well aware that Bologna are a tough side to play against. We've done our homework on them and we'll need to be on our toes.''

New signing Tomas Rincon is eyeing his debut for the Bianconeri after completing a three-and-a-half-year deal from Genoa earlier this week, while goalkeeper Neto is set to start with Gianluigi Buffon unlikely to be even named in the matchday squad having only just returned to training following a bout of flu.

The visitors head to Juventus Stadium on the back a comfortable 3-0 victory at Pescara in their last game on December 18.

Manager Roberto Donadoni will make some late decisions on his starting XI ahead of the clash in Turin but hopes they can cause the hosts some problems.

He told www.bolognafc.it: ``The team still isn't decided. There are still a few doubts over players who weren't at their top in the past couple days so I'll decide after the final training session where we add the finishing touches.

``I hope we put in a performance and then the result will depend on individual episodes. We can't just worry about conceding, but must also look to cause problems for Juve.''

Allegri explains outburst at Marotta and Paratici

Manager’s pre-match comments after winter break

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2017/1/7/14199318/allegri-explains-

outburst-at-marotta-and-paratici-pre-match-comments-juventus-bologna

Jan 7, 2017

Juventus take on Bologna tomorrow in the first game of the second half of the 2016-17 season. Manager Massimiliano Allegri spoke to the media ahead of the game, and was questioned about his angry comments directed at directors Beppe Marotta and Fabio Paratici after the Super Cup loss.

“It was a normal situation of blowing off steam. It has absolutely nothing to do with my future or the transfer situation, those were totally separate.

"I praised the lads so many times for all they’ve done and all they are doing, so just once allow me to vent a bit. In a game like that, which can be lost if the opposition is better than us or prove themselves better on the day, my problem was after 35 minutes we left the building.

“We did not deal with the game at all and well and so our interpretation of the match is what irritated me. The lads have done more over the calendar year than anyone else in Europe, but on that occasion they didn't understand the importance of the occasion. I got angry because they deserved it, for once in three years.

"As for my future, I am happy at Juventus and naturally hope to stay here for a long time. I don’t think my era at Juventus is over. I am very happy here and hope to stay for many years.”

There’s been plenty of conversation about Patrice Evra possibly leaving the club during the January transfer window.

“I won’t talk about transfers, because that is down to the club. As long as players are at Juventus, they have to be at the disposal of the Coach.

“There is some instability created by transfer gossip, so the less we talk about it, the better. I am against the January window, as it creates distraction and can destabilise situations during an important month of games.”

Allegri also updated the team’s injury situation. Club captain Gianluigi Buffon is down with the flu and will miss the game.

“I think we will play with four at the back. I can confirm Paulo Dybala will start, while Buffon probably won’t even be in the squad. He’s recovering from flu, but it was a nasty one and so it might be better if he just focuses on recovery. Neto will be in goal tomorrow.

Andrea Barzagli is called up, I have doubts as to whether he will start. During the week we’ll have Leonardo Bonucci and Alex Sandro back.”

Opponents Bologna sit in fifteenth place, but Allegri wants his side to be more responsible.

“This is a dangerous game, especially as we have conceded a goal in nine of our last 11 home fixtures.

“I told the lads they need to improve their control of the game. Possession is not necessarily control, as I point out in 17 matches we’ve conceded 14 goals, so that needs to be worked on.

“Bologna tend to close up well and go on the counter. The first match back after a winter break is always full of hidden dangers too.”

He finished by talking about the goals for 2017.

“I was cross in Doha, but from tomorrow we must resume the path towards making history, which will be to win a sixth consecutive Scudetto. That chance might never happen again and we want to enter the world of legend.

“Porto are accustomed to playing in the Champions League, knocked Roma out of the preliminary round and we mustn’t think that passage to the next stage is to be taken for granted.”

http://www.football-italia.net/96535/evra-dropped-juventus

Jan 7, 2017

Juventus have left out Patrice Evra from the squad to face Bologna, fuelling reports of his imminent exit.

It kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The decision to leave Evra out of the squad entirely, despite Alex Sandro and Leonardo Bonucci injuries, speaks volumes about the situation.

The 35-year-old is considering a proposal from Valencia, although he has also been linked with Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Federico Mattiello is ruled out after fracturing his nose during a training ground game between ranks this morning.

The unlucky defender will have surgery over the next few days.

Gigi Buffon is also sidelined after coming down with flu symptoms, but new buy Tomas Rincon is ready to make his debut.

Juventus squad for Bologna: Chiellini, Pjanic, Khedira, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Higuain, Hernanes, Barzagli, Mandzukic, Pjaca, Dybala, Asamoah, Rugani, Neto, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Rincon, Audero, Del Favero, Semprini

'We must do better' - Allegri unhappy with Juventus defending

His side may be four points clear in Serie A, but the Bianconeri boss

believes his side are giving opponents far too many opportunities.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/723/serie-a/2017/01/07/31253322/-

Jan 7, 2017

Massimiliano Allegri has criticised Juventus' defensive performances in the first half of the season and has demanded more from his team at the back.

The reigning Serie A champions have conceded 14 times in 17 games before the winter break and looked particularly vulnerable in the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Genoa.

Allegri has now acknowledged the league leaders have not been good enough in defence and has urged his side to step up their game.

"I have asked the players to focus only on our own results, developing the quality of our play and above all, improving the way we manage the closing stages of matches," the Juventus coach said at a news conference.

"Being in possession of the ball does not equate to being in control and on this front, we can do much better.

"We have conceded 14 goals in 17 games and that means that we are presenting too many opportunities to our opponents."

Allegri will be hoping Juventus look better in defence in Sunday's home game against Bologna, with Andrea Barzagli set to return to the starting XI after shrugging off a shoulder problem.

"Chances are we will line up with four at the back for Bologna," said Allegri.

"Either [Patrice] Evra or [Kwadwo] Asamoah will slot in down the left side and Barzagli will probably feature too, he has made a full recovery from his shoulder problem.

"Alex Sandro and [Leonardo] Bonucci are set to return in midweek for the Coppa Italia.

"In attack, [Paulo] Dybala will almost certainly start the match but I'm yet to decide on who will play with him. Paulo will be crucial part of our plans for the second half of the campaign."

Allegri and Juventus plot European

improvement and Serie A dominance

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/juventus/111/blog/post/3034356/allegri

-and-juventus-plot-european-improvement-and-serie-a-dominance

Jan 7, 2017

Juventus enjoyed an extraordinary 2016 but they hope 2017 will be better, especially when it comes to their performances in Europe.

Armed with a new defensive midfielder and ideas for new tactical schemes, coach Massimiliano Allegri is keen to make history with the Italian giants and has made it clear he has no intention of leaving Juventus just yet. "I am happy at Juventus and naturally hope to stay here for a long time. I don't think my era at Juventus is over. I am very happy here and hope to stay for many years," explained the tactician to the assembled media.

Loved, respected and supported, Allegri enjoys being in charge at the club he once supported and while Serie A may not provide the toughest of challenges, the quest for European honours allows him to broaden his horizons.

This year, Allegri could win the title, shatter Italian records and manage something special in the Champions League. In Beppe Marotta & Co, he has a management that are willing to let him vent, provide him with financial support to target the players he enjoys watching and help him manage a group of players who can at times, indulge in overconfidence. Few clubs across Europe provide managers with as much support as Allegri has at Juventus and he's very much aware of that.

Yet many still believe Allegri's time with the club is limited and there is no smoke without fire. In a world where even Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho can struggle, you can understand why Allegri's stable nature and tactical intellect are appealing for Europe's biggest clubs, especially considering Italian coaches continue to dazzle across the leagues. However, until the day Juve have to look for another, they will enjoy the coach who just received another new player.

Tomas Rincon is the newest arrival at the club from Genoa and his transfer should herald a change in tactics. Tactically intelligent and capable of playing just in front of defence, his presence on the pitch is expected to unburden Claudio Marchisio, allowing the Turin native to return to his previous role as a box to box midfielder.

It's been made abundantly clear that Juve's midfield is lacking quality, at least when compared to previous years. Since Axel Witsel chose Chinese riches over Italian trophies, Juventus have sought out ways of providing Allegri with other options. Rincon may not be the world's greatest midfielder but he is a tidy player. He reads the game well, intercepts when required and he's capable of providing balance. The problem is, he's not the most technical player and there is a fear that Juve's midfield, save Miralem Pjanic, boast more intensity and power than it does technical beauty.

Is that a bad thing? It depends on what formation Allegri plans to make. Rincon guarantees energy and relentless running. He covers ground, recovers possession and understands the merits of fighting for the team. But unlike Marchisio or Andrea Pirlo before him, when deployed in front of the defence, he cannot provide those perfectly weighted balls forward or provide the intelligence required to unleash the attacking line.

His arrival could make way for Carlo Ancelotti's once favoured Christmas tree formation, the 4-3-2-1 shape, with Paulo Dybala and Pjanic behind Gonzalo Higuain or could allow for a more physical 4-3-3 shape.

It remains to be seen how Allegri will make use of his new signing but while Rincon is a useful player to have, Juventus still need to introduce elegance to a midfield that lacks genuine and lasting quality. Against Bologna on Sunday evening, the champions are set to deploy a 4-3-1-2 formation with Pjanic behind the front two and Kwadwo Asamoah on the right. This will be a tricky fixture. While the opponents may not boast the technique and individual might of the Bianconeri, they do know how to work as a collective unit and provide an upset.

Defensively secure, Bologna are a hard team to penetrate. They intercept and tackle well and are capable of frustrating their opponents but according to coach Roberto Donadoni, they plan to attack the Old Lady, believing that will provide them more joy in such a difficult match. That seems hard to believe considering how much the side have struggled in hitting the back of the net.

Juventus must start 2017 with a bang and prove they have the right attitude going forward. Allegri has already warned of the dangers of not taking certain games seriously and it's time to heed his advice, especially as three points are on the line at a delicate stage of the season.

juventus

Juventus

The painful loss in the Supercoppa reminded us while it is imperative for Juventus to keep winning otherwise it becomes the target of silly media narrative. First we got that the management is not fully sold on Massimiliano Allegri and is already thinking about replacing him at the end of the season. Then we had that the coach himself might decide to leave to go abroad. Finally, we had the whole Paulo Dybala brouhaha: he is under-performing, he is unhappy because he is not starting, he is not extending his contract and eyeing a move in the summer, no, he will sign the renewal but that does not mean that he will stay. A lot of ink would not have been wasted had we not missed two penalties or had Dybala scored from point-blank range in the overtime.

Still, there were some useful takeaways from what was a highly entertaining game. First of all, Juventus should have at least scored twice in the first half an hour, when they were completely dominant. Then there are still some flaws when we play with a four-man defence: too often we are burnt on long crosses, where the centre-backs seem out of position and the striker or the cutter is marked by the fullbacks, which creates a disadvantage. Finally, Dybala as no.10 could work only in small stretches when the team is in full-out attack mode: the Argentinian struggled when he had to track back deep to get the ball and distribute it. These are not unfixable issues, but they need some work.

In the meantime, the transfer market re-opened and the management acted quickly to add Tomas Rincon basically to replace Mario Lemina, who is with Gabon at AFCON. This deal was probably a low hanging fruit: as it later become crystal-clear, there were still issue to overcome to acquire Axel Witsel and they wanted somebody ready and tested for battle. Rincon is not a transcendent player by any stretch, but he is a good soldier and adds an element of physicality that sometimes has been missing in our midfield. The executives are clearly looking to improve the left midfielder position in a big way, but I doubt it will happen soon. Some of the names are very interesting, like Corentin Tolisso, Leon Goretzka and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, but these are 20M plus investments which are hard to make in January, where teams are reluctant to sell and always drive a hard bargain. Anyway, I think this is a good idea: Sturaro is ok, but not good enough to be an unchallenged regular starter at Juventus. Adding a stud that combines technique and physicality and possibly some finishing skills is the easiest way to improve the XI. Juventus technically have this kind of player on the roster, but unfortunately after the heavy knee issues he went through, we have no prove that Kwadwo Asamoah is still the beast he was at Udinese in that position. I’d give it a try though.

What could easily happen instead is Patrice Evra leaving to play more. I think he still sees himself starting somewhere else, while here he is clearly, and deservedly, Alex Sandro’s backup. Despite the reports saying that Juventus could rely on Asamoah or Federico Mattiello, I think that would be too risky and adding another fullback, maybe one that can play on both flanks since Dani Alves will be out for a while, just makes sense. Matteo Darmian or Mattia De Sciglio would be the most logical candidates. Anyway in this position Juventus does not need a top player thanks to Alex Sandro, so it should not be hard to find somebody for the job.

On Sunday, Juventus face Bologna: not the most difficult opponent, but the first game after the break could be challenging from the physical standpoint as teams are usually not very spry. As per usual, Allegri will have to deal with some absences. Lemina and Medhi Benatia will partake AFCON so they will be out for a while, on the other hand Asamoah has refused the call up and it could be a very timely decision because he has a real chance to start. Alex Sandro is out with a muscular problem, Evra will be spared because of transfer market implications, therefore Asamoah will play at LB. If not on Sunday, he will for sure play in Coppa Italia, trying to win over the coaching staff that has not showed much confidence in him over the last couple of months.

Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci are out, while Gianluigi Buffon is dealing with a persistent flu and Norberto Neto will replace him. In all likelihood, it will be a 4-3-1-2: the doubts are between Andrea Barzagli and Daniele Rugani as Giorgio Chiellini’s partner and Rincon and Sturaro in the midfield. Dybala will start over Mandzukic, re-establishing the pre-injury hierarchy.

Probable lineup:

4-3-1-2: Neto; Lichsteiner, Barzagli, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Marchisio, Rincon; Pjanic; Dybala, Higuain.

Injuries:

Buffon (flu), Bonucci (hamstring), Sandro (hamstring),  Alves (fibula), Mandragora (foot), Mattiello (nose);

Suspensions:

None.

Bologna are very solid financially and have put together a decent roster, yet I find them to be one of the most uninteresting teams in Serie A for many reasons. Their coach has a very mellow personality and has implemented a rather dull playing style. They do not really have any exciting youngster on the roster, other than maybe Federico Di Francesco and Godfred Donsah, who do not play a lot, if at all, and Simone Verdi, who is hurt. We already know that their star Mattia Destro is not a top team caliber player. What bothers the most me is that, once they are in a relative tranquil position, neither the ownership nor the squad seems to care about making a run at the prime positions, but they are content with avoiding relegation. They will easily stay away from the relegation race this year, but it is fair to expect some more investments from such a wealthy ownership.

They are in fifteenth position, ten points above Palermo. They had a decent start then stumbled along the way. They had a seven game stretch where they failed to win and collected five ties. They have won only one game on the road. They play the customary style of the low table teams, sitting back and counter-attacking, but since they have lost Simone Verdi to an ankle injury they only have one weapon on the open field, Ladislav Krejci, who is not a great finisher. I guess their most interesting active player is Adam Masina, whom Juventus is reportedly tracking as a possible addition at left-back: he had a very good rookie year in Serie A, but I think he had a rather disappointing season so far. Donadoni even benched at times in September and October, questioning his effort level in practice. He picked up in December and maybe he needs new motivations: he has excellent physical skills, he is very good going forward but needs a little work on the defensive side.

They will be without Verdi, Saphir Taider who is at AFCON and Sadiq Umar, who recently had ankle surgery. They use 4-3-3, but it really is more a 4-5-1. They have very experienced centre-back duo. There are a of doubts: at right back, it will be either Emil Krafth or Vasilis Torosidis, while in the midfield either Federico Viviani or Erick Pulgar will replace the starter Taider. Then, depending on the approach, either the more defensive Luca Rizzo or the pure winger Anthony Mounier will start on the right. They are pretty dangerous on the set pieces, both direct and indirect: Viviani has a very good right foot. However, they generally do not have much offensive punch: they have scored only 17 goals so far. If Juventus take this game seriously, and I have to reason to think why they would not, they can easily turn this tilt into a cakewalk.

Probable lineup:

4-3-3: Mirante; Torosidis, Gastaldello, Maietta, Masina; Dzemaili, Nagy, Viviani; Rizzo, Destro, Krejci.

Injuries:

Verdi (ankle), Sadiq (ankle).

Suspensions:

None.

Juventus drop Man Utd and Valencia

target Evra as exit door beckons

Even Alex Sandro's absence through injury has not prompted Massimiliano

Allegri to call on the Frenchman for Sunday's game with Bologna.

Patrice Evra has been dropped by Juventus to add further fuel to reports of the Frenchman's imminent departure from the Serie A champions.

The left-back has been linked with a January move to Valencia and former club Manchester United, having fallen firmly behind Alex Sandro in the pecking order this season.

That the Brazil international is missing for Sunday's Serie A fixture with Genoa due to a thigh strain and Evra remains unused by Massimiliano Allegri appears to give a sizable clue to the Frenchman's long-term prospects in Turin.

The champions welcome Roberto Donadoni's side to Juventus Stadium with a four-point lead in the standings, as well as a game in hand, after the mid-season break.

Juventus vs. Bologna: BWRAO starting lineup vote results

The squad you want to see was selected. Let’s see who it is.

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2017/1/8/14201878/juventus

-bologna-2017-serie-a-round-18-starting-lineup-vote-results

Jan 8, 2017

I asked, and you answered. The 4-3-1-2 remains the preference of most readers, especially with a shiny new midfield toy that has recently become available.

The chosen starting keeper was obviously Buffon, but he will miss the game due to illness, which leaves the keeper duties to fall to Neto by default. Emil Audero did collect 5 votes though, it would seem like some readers either see something in Audero, or aren’t a big fan of Neto.

In the middle of defense, Daniele Rugani and Giorgio Chiellini both received 92 percent of votes each, while Alex Sandro and Stephan Lichsteiner received 68 and 72 percent of votes, respectively, to round out the rest of the backline. As I’m writing this though, I’m seeing that neither Sandro nor Patrice Evra are in the squad. That means that by default, we will follow this reader’s suggestion:

If Evra and Sandro are not available, King Kong should play LB as he has for Italy in the past

Asamoah only received 10 votes, so we’ll say this was the preferred lineup, overall. However, he did get some love in the interesting inclusions section:

Considering Sandro injured, and Evra exit rumors. Asa as lwb.

In the midfield, the usual three of Claudio Marchisio, Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic were selected, and unsurprisingly, Tomas Rincon was selected to see what he can do against Bologna. Here’s hoping he solves the lack of physicality issue in the midfield. There was a rather unpopular take regarding Khedira that I thought I’d share though:

Cuadrado over Khedira. Khedira level has dropped significantly since September. Excluding the game against Pescara his performances have left a lot to be desired. He's not offering significant defensive contribution either.

Up front, the duo of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain won by quite a large margin. The Moise Kean admirers have not gone away, though:

Kean off the bench for some burn

There were also many shouts to bring in Pjaca for at least some minutes, if not the start.

BWRAO’s Starting XI (4-3-1-2): Neto; Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele Rugani, Andrea Barzagli, Stephan Lichtsteiner; Sami Khedira, Claudio Marchisio, Tomas Rincon; Miralem Pjanic; Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain.

Regarding the poll question, 58 percent of readers said it was an unwise decision for Axel Witsel to move to China.

Anthony’s Editorial Piece Based on the Survey Question:

Judging by my level of snark used in the question, I think it’s clear which side I take on this topic. I obviously agree that playing for Juve or another team at the top level is worth playing for a smaller salary. That being said, as Ted Dibiase said, “Everybody’s got a price.” I think that at some point, it becomes ridiculous to turn down that much money, no matter who you are.

Yes, you can argue that he has millions after playing on a big contract in Russia for so long, and that he could comfortably support himself and his family for the rest of their lives, but think about how much extra money he’ll be making over the next four years. At a very conservative minimum, it would be over €60 million. He’s still playing football, his dream job, it’s not like he’s being asked to give that up. But he’s now going to have an extra €60 million for him and his family, probably extended family, kids, grandkids to all live a pretty comfortable lifestyle for the rest of their lives, all because he went to China for four years of his life, to play soccer.

I really can’t blame him whatsoever for that. I wish him nothing but success, because I truly believe that he did and does truly respect Juventus as a club and really did dream of playing here, it would just be ridiculous in both of our opinions to turn down that type of money.

Line-ups: Juventus-Bologna

http://www.football-italia.net/96591/line-ups-juventus-bologna

Jan 8, 2017

Juventus must do without Gigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci and Alex Sandro, but start Paulo Dybala as they host Bologna.

It kicks off in Turin at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT.

The Bianconeri ended 2016 with disappointment, as Milan beat them in a Doha penalty shoot-out to win the Supercoppa Italiana.

They’re now feeling the pressure at the top of Serie A too, after Roma and Napoli successes, but have the opportunity to make history.

A win here would set a new all-time record of 26 consecutive Serie A home victories.

Max Allegri is without captain Buffon, who is nursing a cold, joined by injured Leo Bonucci, Alex Sandro and Dani Alves.

Medhi Benatia and Mario Lemina are on Africa Cup of Nations duty, with new signing Tomas Rincon on the bench just days after his arrival from Genoa.

Miralem Pjanic takes a trequartista role behind Dybala, returning to the start after six weeks, and Gonzalo Higuain.

Patrice Evra was left out of the squad, as he is considering offers from Valencia and Manchester United.

Bologna are still without Umar Sadiq and Simone Verdi, but full-back Adam Masina has been linked with a move to Juve as Evra’s replacement.

Federico Di Francesco, Mattia Destro and impressive Ladislav Krejci form the trident attack.

The Rossoblu haven’t beaten Juventus, home or away, since a 2-0 Turin triumph in February 2011, losing five and drawing three.

Juventus: Neto; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pjanic; Dybala, Higuain

Bologna: Mirante; Torosidis, Oikonomou, Maietta, Masina; Donsah, Viviani, Dzemaili; Krejci, Destro, Di Francesco

Chiellini: 'Barzagli is a colossus'

http://www.football-italia.net/96596/chiellini-barzagli-colossus

Jan 8, 2017

Giorgio Chiellini is glad that Andrea Barzagli is back in the Juventus line-up after two months. “He’s one of the best in the world.”

The Bianconeri host Bologna this evening.

This is the first match of 2017, since losing to Milan on penalties for the Supercoppa Italiana in Doha.

“After every game, every win and defeat, we discuss it in the locker room with humility and the desire to improve on our mistakes. That is our great strength over the last few years,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’re aware of the difficulties that we are going into, as Bologna will close up well and go on the counter with talented young players on the wings. It will take a very good Juve side to beat them tonight.”

Paulo Dybala returns for his first start since October and Barzagli is also back after dislocating his shoulder.

“Barzagli is a colossus, a giant, one of the key figures for Juventus and Italy, not to mention one of the best centre-backs in the world.

“It’s good to know he is back and over the next week we’ll get Leonardo Bonucci and Alex Sandro back too.”

HT 2-0: Juventus sweep Bologna aside

http://www.football-italia.net/96599/ht-juventus-sweep-bologna-aside

Jan 8, 2017

Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala have given Juventus the 2-0 half-time lead over Bologna.

Juve started 2017 eager to make up for the Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Milan in Doha on December 23, but Gigi Buffon, Leonardo Bonucci, Dani Alves, Patrice Evra, Medhi Benatia and Mario Lemina were unavailable. Bologna made the trip without Simone Verdi and Umar Sadiq.

The Rossoblu haven’t beaten Juventus, home or away, since a 2-0 Turin triumph in February 2011, losing five and drawing three.

It took just seven minutes to break the deadlock, as Miralem Pjanic chipped up a smart pass for Gonzalo Higuain, who kept his volley low to squirm in despite Antonio Mirante getting a hand to it.

Stephan Lichtsteiner turned wide from a corner, as did Higuain’s header, but the Swiss international was booked for lashing out an elbow and will be suspended against Fiorentina next week.

Marios Oikonomou rather clumsily barged into Stefano Sturaro as he entered the box for an entirely avoidable penalty. Dybala stepped up and converted, putting the miss in the Doha shoot-out behind him.

Juventus 3-0 Bologna: Higuain and Dybala seal simple victory

The Argentine duo were in fine form to ensure a perfect start to the year for the

defending Serie A champions, who remain in pole position for yet another Scudetto.

Jan 8, 2017

Gonzalo Higuain struck twice as Serie A leaders Juventus made a strong start to 2017, dispatching Bologna 3-0 to quickly forget their surprise Supercoppa Italiana defeat.

The heavyweights signed off for the mid-season break with a disappointing loss to AC Milan on penalties following a 1-1 extra-time draw in the annual showpiece game.

But there was no sign of a resulting lack of confidence or indeed rust from spending two weeks over the festive period without a competitive fixture.

An early Higuain goal and Paulo Dybala's penalty saw Massimiliano Allegri's men quickly take charge of the contest in Turin, the former Napoli striker adding a second nine minutes into the second half.

The result sees the reigning champions restore their four-point advantage over second-placed Roma, ahead of a Coppa Italia last-16 tie at home to Atalanta on Wednesday.

The home team had to make do without experienced defender Patrice Evra, who was left out as he considers a January move away from Turin.

masina-khedira-juventus-bologna-serie-a_gonzalo-higuain-juventus-bologna_fhu92y0gonzalo-higuain-juventus-bologna_5dekxo4

But that did not prevent the title-holders from notching a 26th home league win in succession, Juve having not lost in front of their own fans in Serie A since August 2015.

Higuain gave Juve an early lead with a half-volley finish on the turn from Miralem Pjanic's assist - a delicate ball over the top of the Bologna defence - to make it 1-0 with just eight minutes gone.

Stephan Lichtsteiner nearly doubled the advantage six minutes later, sticking a foot out at a loose ball from a corner and turning it just wide of the far post.

Neto, making a rare appearance in goal in place of the ill Gianluigi Buffon, was then tested by Federico Di Francesco in an infrequent foray forward for the visitors.

Having done well to repel Juve's advances throughout much of the first half, Bologna's hopes of getting something out of the game suffered a fatal blow five minutes before the break, when Stefano Sturaro was brought down in the area by Marios Oikonomou.

Dybala tucked away a simple penalty to make it 2-0, sending the hosts in at the break with a commanding lead.

Juve's comfort increased shortly after the restart, Lichtsteiner playing a tidy one-two with Sami Khedira, before swinging in a cross and finding Higuain unmarked in the centre of the area to head down and past helpless goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Kwadwo Asamoah impressed throughout in place of Evra at left wing-back, while Tomas Rincon, signed from Genoa on Tuesday, made his debut off the bench as Juve saw out the closing stages in complete comfort.

Serie A leaders Juventus returned from their winter break to demonstrate their fearsome Scudetto credentials with a 3-0 dismantling of Bologna on Sunday night.

Gonzalo Higuain reached 12 league goals for the season by scoring in each half, with Paulo Dybala celebrating his first start since a lengthy injury lay-off with a successful penalty just before half-time.

Roma's narrow victory at Genoa earlier in the day had slashed the gap to first place to a single point, but Massimiliano Allegri's men are once again four points out in front and boast a game in hand.

Juve underlined their dominance in Italy throughout 2016 with a 1-0 victory over closest rivals Roma in the middle of December, but AC Milan would deal them a blow to morale just before Christmas.

A mid-season trip to Qatar for the Italian Super Cup failed to deliver the Old Lady's third piece of silverware in the calendar year as the Rossoneri forced a 1-1 draw before triumphing on penalties.

Eager to put that disappointment behind them and restore winning momentum in Serie A, Juve set about lowly Bologna with vigour in Turin, and the opening goal arrived after only seven minutes.

The author of the stunning strike that downed Roma several weeks ago, Higuain made it five goals from his last five outings in Bianconero with a searing volley to convert Miralem Pjanic's lay-off.

Bologna could not get a look in for the rest of the first half, with Federico Di Francesco only managing to drive his low sighter into Neto's gloves in a tame display of rebellion.

Claudio Marchisio came closer with a similar effort at the other end in the 23rd minute and, shortly before half-time, Juve were handed an opportunity to double their lead.

Marios Oikonomou was the villain as he brought Stefano Sturaro down in the Bologna box to concede a penalty which Dybala gladly slotted home to record his first goal since October.

The wave of positivity sustained Juve through the break and they returned to the pitch determined to add to their advantage, which they would do in the 55th minute thanks to a familiar source.

Sami Khedira and Stephan Lichtsteiner linked up well down the right before the Swiss drifted a pinpoint cross onto Higuain's head, from where the ball flew cleanly into the back of the net.

The Argentinian hotshot, who cost Juve €90 million from Napoli in the summer, could not find a hat-trick goal before being replaced by Mario Mandzukic.

Allegri led a standing ovation for Higuain, who is likely to be rested for Wednesday's Coppa Italia meeting with Atalanta as the hotly anticipated trip to Fiorentina looms large next weekend.

This result allows them to beat their own record of 25, set during Antonio Conte’s tenure from August 2013 to November 2014.

Juve remained dominant after the restart, as Lichtsteiner whipped in a cross for the totally unmarked Higuain’s header into the ground for 3-0. Pipita had peeled away from the centre-backs.

Juan Cuadrado almost created a goal with his first touch, surging forward for Khedira’s delightful turn, but Dybala ballooned the finish over the bar.

There was time for Tomas Rincon to be given his debut just days after arriving from Genoa.

Marchisio: 'Juve started on right foot'

Claudio Marchisio concedes Juventus wanted to “start 2017 on the right foot” with a 3-0 victory over Bologna.

The Bianconeri ended 2016 losing the Supercoppa Italiana to Milan, failing in a penalty shoot-out with Milan in Doha.

“We began the match very determined and were able to break the deadlock early, then ran hardly any risks,” Marchisio told Mediaset Premium.

“We gave a good response to the Supercoppa defeat, as we wanted to start 2017 on the right foot. We could not really have asked for more.

“On Wednesday we have another important match in the Coppa Italia.”

The Bianconeri host Atalanta in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 on Wednesday evening.

Jan 8, 2017

With how the roster was constructed coming into the 2016-17 season, the vision was simple: Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala would team together to form a powerhouse partnership to lead the way offensively while Miralem Pjanic would be supplying plenty of support from the midfield. It made perfect sense even with all of the money it took over the last two summers to make it a reality.

In Juventus’ first game of 2017, we saw what all three players are capable of doing.

And it was glorious.

It was an all-Argentinian scoreline at Juventus Stadium on Sunday night, as goals from Higuain bookended Dybala’s 40th-minute penalty kick in a 3-0 win over Bologna to establish a new Serie A record for consecutive wins at their home stadium that was set three years ago when Antonio Conte was roaming the Juve sidelines. Even on a frigid early-January night in Turin where the temperatures at Juventus Stadium dipped below zero degrees celsius, Juve and their No. 9 continued their extremely efficient play on their home turf.

Just gonna go out out on a limb and say that’s pretty good.

Juventus, already winter champions thanks to how they went into the holiday break, not only extended their lead atop the Serie A table back to four points with a game in hand after Roma’s win over Genoa earlier in the day, but also got their No. 1 strike partnership on the field together for the first time in a long time.

For this team to be successful on the bigger stage — like, you know, the European stage in the Champions League next month and going forward — it’s going to have to be Dybala and Higuain who lead the way. As wonderful as it would be to happen all the time, they’re not going to score three goals every single time they’re paired together. (And, based on that wonderful chance that Dybala had toward the end of Sunday’s win, it could have been a double-brace situation if his shot didn’t go miles over the crossbar.)

We got a glimpse of it, though. Higuain is clearly starting to really hit some serious goal-scoring form. Dybala, who got his first goal since his brace against Udinese in mid-October, is bound to find form sooner rather than later. I can say that because we’ve seen him score goals in bunches just when it looks like he might be completely out of it. That’s just the kind of player he is.

That’s the beauty of this Juventus attack. There’s multiple ways to beat you. And, as Bologna found out on Sunday, when they’re both on the scoresheet, good things are usually happening for Juventus. Good things usually result in three points, too.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

  • Let’s just get it out of the way right now: How many hearts stopped when Dybala went down injured all of about a minute or two into the second half?
  • Let’s also get this out of the way right now: How beautiful was Pjanic’s assist to Higuain on the game-opening goal? Because I think it was quite beautiful.
  • Also: STEPHAN LICHTSTEINER SENT IN A GOOD CROSS ON HIGUAIN’S GOAL. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THIS IS NOT A DRILL, PEOPLE.
  • Neto’s night in goal as he subbed for Gianluigi Buffon: Dive to his left for a save. Dive to his left for a save. Seems simple enough, doesn’t it? Probably because it was.
  • The announcers on the stream I was watching spent a minute or two saying that Mattia Destro had a lot of the same qualities of Higuain. No, seriously, they did. And just for the record, Higuain had twice as many GOALS as Destro had SHOTS on Sunday night, so there may be a little difference in quaity there, folks.
  • Gotta say, the Kwadwo-Asamoah-as-a-left-back experiment went pretty well. Sure, a lot of Bologna’s offense in the first half when it was just a 1-0 Juventus lead came down their left flank with Federico Di Francesco, but can you name an issue that happened on the opposite wing? Not really, no. Alex Sandro is expected back at training next week, according to Max Allegri himself, but Asamoah showed he can fill in admirably at left back for one night, at least.
  • I’m going to take no playing time for Marko Pjaca on Sunday as a sign that he will be playing in the Coppa Italia match against Atalanta on Wednesday. Or maybe that’s just me and my wishful thinking showing again, but whatever.
  • Claudio Marchisio recorded nearly half of Juventus’ 14 interceptions against Bologna, according to WhoScored. Even when you think he’s having a quiet game, he’s doing something to help the team win. Love that guy.
  • Four points up with a game in hand (against Crotone, no less). I can live with that.

Allegri: 'Happy at Juventus'

Max Allegri praised Juventus for their versatility and focus after beating Bologna, but laughed off Premier League rumours.

The Bianconeri started 2017 with a 3-0 victory over Bologna, their all-time record 26th consecutive Serie A home success.

“It was important to get a win today so we maintained the gap with a game in hand. There are some very tough matches coming up and we couldn’t risk dropping points this evening,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I compliment the players for interpreting the situations well, as games don’t always start one way and go to plan, so at times you need to think about what to change and how to adapt.

“It’s thanks to their versatility also that we are able to adapt the tactics and take different approaches when certain players are missing.

Being able to change even during a match makes us more unpredictable for the opposition.”

This was the first game since the Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Milan on penalties in Doha on December 23.

Paulo Dybala saw his spot-kick saved during the shoot-out, but successfully converted today between a Gonzalo Higuain brace.

“I knew he was going to miss in Doha, but this time I knew he’d score, so I didn’t bother looking. How did I know? I’ll tell you at the end of the season!

“We were defending with seven men at stages and that left Bologna spaces. There was another drop in concentration levels, but fortunately this time we were able to switch the light back on, which we didn’t do in Doha.

“We had the sensation throughout the game that Bologna were not going to score against us and frankly we haven’t managed that often enough this season. We tend to keep possession, but not control the game – there’s a big difference.

“Our primary objective is the Scudetto and it is absolutely not easy, because Roma are pushing, so are Napoli, and we need at least 85 points to be sure of the title.

“The Champions League is a very different type of tournament where one incident can make all the difference. Over a league season, these things even themselves out, whereas in Europe you’ve got one chance.”

Allegri was again asked about the reports he was preparing for a life in the Premier League and laughed it off.

“I am studying English, but I have been for many years. It’s incredible, the very day I arrived in London with my daughter, I walked through the airport and saw a giant picture of me on the newspaper saying I was meant to be joining Arsenal. Dammit, I said, today this had to happen?!

“I am very happy at Juventus and until they kick me out, I’m content to stay.”

Juventus entered the record books on Sunday, becoming the first team in Italian history to win 26 successive Serie A matches at home.

Massimiliano Allegri's men won every top flight game they played in front of their own fans in 2016 and have not dropped points at Juventus Stadium in the league since a 1-1 draw with Frosinone in September 2015.

They returned from the mid-season break with a routine 3-0 win over Bologna, thanks to Gonzalo Higuain's brace and a Paulo Dybala penalty.

The result not only restored the Bianconeri's four-point advantage over second-placed Roma at the top of the table, but also saw them notch a new milestone as they go in search of a sixth consecutive Scudetto.

Allegri to stay at Juventus until club kicks him out

Juventus started off 2017 on a winning note, beating Bologna 3-0 and in the process setting a new record of 26 consecutive home wins at the Juventus Stadium. After the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri spoke to the media.

“It was important to get a win today so we maintained the gap with a game in hand. There are some very tough matches coming up and we couldn’t risk dropping points this evening.

He mysteriously commented that he knew Paulo Dybala would score the Bianconeri’s first half penalty, having seen the forward miss in the Supercoppa as Juve went on to lose in the shootout.

We tend to keep possession, but not control the game – there’s a big difference.”

Allegri reinstated once again that the club’s main goal of the season was a sixth straight Scudetto.

The rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League continue to simmer unabated, but Allegri once again reinstated that he was happy in Turin.

January a decisive month for Juventus

amid 'long season' - Max Allegri

Jan 9, 2017

Massimiliano Allegri believes January could prove to be a defining month for Juventus as they target glory on three fronts.

The reigning Serie A champions and current leaders returned from their winter break to demolish Bologna 3-0 in Turin, with Gonzalo Higuain scoring twice, either side of a Paulo Dybala penalty.

With a four-point lead in the Scudetto race re-established, thoughts turn to Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarterfinal meeting with Atalanta, before Juve have to visit fierce rivals Fiorentina in the league.

Head coach Allegri told juventus.com: "I am convinced that you will understand a lot more about this team at the end of January. It will be an important period for us.

"Our rivals, like Roma and Napoli, are doing good things and putting pressure on us -- it's going to be a long season.

"Beating Atalanta in the cup will not be easy, they're doing very well. Then in the Champions League we will have to be at our best to beat Porto.

"We have a lot of matches ahead of us in the next few weeks but we can do well in them all.''

Higuain blasted Miralem Pjanic's assist beyond Antonio Mirante for a seventh-minute opener before Dybala converted a spot-kick following a foul from Marios Oikonomou.

Juve's €90 million-signing Higuain rubber-stamped the outcome with a header 10 minutes after the break, and Allegri was full of praise for his team.

"They are playing well and are dedicated to doing what I'm asking them to do,'' he said. "We played well on a technical level, especially considering it was the first game of the year.

"We have trained well over the last few days and now we must continue doing so, and keep growing.''

Midfielder Claudio Marchisio was happy to get an early opportunity to make amends for the missed opportunity that came in the Italian Super Cup final just two days before Christmas.

Massimiliano Allegri
Max Allegri denied rumours he is in line to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Juve had been targeting a third piece of silverware in 2016 but lost on penalties to AC Milan in Doha.

"Bologna are a good side and we've often found it tough against [Roberto] Donadoni's teams,'' he said. "We wanted to bounce back after Doha.

"It was important to react at our own stadium, in front of our own fans.

"The year has just began -- we have many matches left to play, starting on Wednesday, but we've got off to a good start.''

Allegri also moved to play down recent rumours linking him to the Arsenal manager position if Arsene Wenger does not return next season, with the Frenchman's contract up at the end of the season.

But the former AC Milan coach is adamant he is not planning a move away from Italy.

"It's incredible, the very day I arrived in London with my daughter, I walked through the airport and saw a giant picture of me on the newspaper saying I was meant to be joining Arsenal. 'Damn it,' I said, 'today this had to happen?'

"I am very happy at Juventus and until they kick me out, I'm content to stay."

Gonzalo Higuain, Juventus begin 2017

What a better way to start the New Year than to break another record.

Juventus thrashed Bologna 3-0 to set a new all-time record of 26 consecutive Serie A home wins beating their own record of 25 wins achieved under the tutelage of Antonio Conte in 2013-14.

Determined from the get go, Juve played with pace and fluidity to overwhelm an opponent that simply could not respond. While Bologna attempted to press high up the pitch in hopes of winning the ball in advantageous positions, they struggled to maintain possession and create valid opportunities.

Juventus controlled the match from start to end, creating endless opportunities against a side that surrendered too easily.

Positives

After a lethargic and disappointing performance against Milan in the Supercoppa before Christmas, many were concerned Juve would take this match lightly. However, the team played with pace and desire from the offset and maintained their concentration for much of the game, determined to collect a victory. The speed with which they continue to score goals within the first 15 minutes of a Serie A match will stand them in good stead going forward.

Negatives

There were none. But if one was to be hyper critical then perhaps the hosts missed Alex Sandro. While Kwadwo Asamoah played a good game, attentive and good on the ball, he failed to provide the offensive thrusts required from the role. Sandro's relentless running and commitment to the attack makes the difference and until he returns, Juve will struggle to dominate as effectively on the left.

Manager rating out of 10

7 -- Allegri managed to ensure a concentrated and determined performance from his men who just got back from the holidays. An easy win, there was no need for tactical brilliance to achieve success.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Norberto Neto, 6 -- Barely required to do anything. A calm presence at the back.

DF Stephan Lichtsteiner, 7 -- Worked very hard to support the team and provided the assist for Juve's third goal. Back to his previous levels, demonstrating tactical intelligence and energy.

DF Andrea Barzagli, 6 -- Not as polished as usual but he needn't be any better in these types of matches.

DF Giorgio Chiellini, 6 -- Can be accused of being a little careless on the ball but barely tested by the opponent.

DF Kwadwo Asamoah, 6 -- Refusing to let go of possession, Asamoah got himself out of tricky situations by demonstrating unusual elegance on the ball. Hard working and cautious but not able to make the same offensive impact as Sandro. Ideally would make decisions quicker.

MF Sami Khedira 6 -- His movement off the ball was excellent, always knowing where to run, where to stand and how to contribute, creating good chances -- one Gonzalo Higuain should have converted. Worked very well with Lichtsteiner and proved brilliant at recovering possession.

MF Claudio Marchisio, 6 -- Was guilty of a few errors. However, he is always aware of his surroundings, thinks quickly and kept his side moving.

MF Stefano Sturaro, 6 -- Won the penalty for Paulo Dybala to score Juve's second, Sturaro played with his usual grit and determination, intercepting well to win back possession.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 7 -- His technique overwhelmed the opponent, delivering the most perfect assist for Higuaín's first goal. He elegance on the ball helped the team penetrate with ease but not yet at his optimum physical levels.

FW Paulo Dybala, 6 -- Still not back up to his previous levels but converted his penalty well and always looked to trouble the opponent with his movement and ideas.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 8 -- His movement across the front line was excellent. His finish on the first goal was superb, intelligent on the second. Higuain makes the ultimate difference for Juventus. Chased every ball, made all the right runs and looked determined to ensure victory.

Gonzalo Higuain celebrates after opening the scoring.
A brace from Gonzalo Higuain meant that Juventus have started 2017 in typically ominous fashion.

Substitutes

MF Juan Cuadrado, 6 -- Determined as soon as he arrived on the pitch, he proved effective at ensuring safety at the back, recovered possession and looked for ways to push forward. Still slows down the game when he ought to release quicker.

FW Mario Mandzukic, N/A -- With little left to play for, Mandzukic couldn't make the impact he desired.

MF Tomas Rincon, N/A -- Tidy and neat but barely offered time to make an impact.
