Suso: 'Supercoppa biggest game yet'

http://www.football-italia.net/95974/suso-supercoppa-biggest-game-yet

Dec 21, 2016

Milan attacking midfielder Suso admits that the Supercoppa Italiana against Juventus is the 'biggest game of his career'.

The youngster won the U-19 European Championship with Spain in 2012 whilst playing for Liverpool, before eventually joining Milan in 2015.

"This is certainly the biggest game of my career," the Spaniard told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Next comes the European U-19 final and my debut in the Premier League wearing the shirt of Liverpool against Manchester United, that was a crazy feeling.

"There were no opportunities for moving forward there, and I needed a chance.

"That's why I chose Milan, which is a top European club for me. The beginning was difficult, then I was given this opportunity, thanks to [Vincenzo] Montella.

"He’s one that is not afraid to take risks, gets the most from the group and gives opportunities to all.

"Personally he has always given me confidence, and with him things are really good. His style is like my style, and it helps me.

"The truth is that I feel really good physically and mentally, so I want to continue like this.

"And when I'm feeling good, I know I can always play, and that I will be given a start.

"And here we return to the Coach. He is one who is not afraid to play youngsters, which in his profession is always quite difficult.

"It’s nice to look around and see young teammates, but it must be said that if you play well age is just a number."

How can this young Milan side overcome Juventus?

"The only recipe I know to beat the Bianconeri is to stay focused for 90 minutes, otherwise it is impossible.

"If you make mistakes, they punish you immediately. And if you have opportunities to score, you can not afford to waste them.

"On a tactical level, we need to be very compact and narrow because they have strikers who play between the lines."

If Suso could choose one player to remove from the Juve side for Friday, who would it be?

"Actually, I’ll take away three. [Paulo] Dybala, [Gianluigi] Buffon and Alex Sandro, who defends very well, is comprehensive and dynamic."

Suso: 'Juve the favourites'

http://www.football-italia.net/95975/suso-juve-favourites

Dec 21, 2016

Suso believes that Juventus are the favourites to win the Supercoppa Italiana, but 'he prefers it this way'.

After admitting that the match was the 'biggest' in his career so far, the attacking midfielder discussed similarities between himself and Paulo Dybala.

"Until now Juve have proven to be the strongest, Suso continued in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

"However in the league we won. Let's say we could just do it.

"Dybala? The first time I faced Palermo, Alex said to me, 'he looks good that guy, just look how he moves.' He was right, he's phenomenal.

"In some movements and the way we play we are similar, but he plays more ‘inside’ than me.

"By all means we can beat Juve. Defeating them gives us a lot of confidence and even some more information on how to play against them.

"But to be honest, they are the favourites, and I prefer it this way. We will be even more motivated and the pressure will be on them.

"Despite no wins from two games, we have played well. Paradoxically we go to the Super Cup even more convinced and aware of our strength.

"If we lose, for example, like what happened in Rome, we will have good reason to be satisfied with our growth.

"If we win we will give a beautiful gift to the greatest President in the world."

Milan fly to Qatar 'this afternoon'

http://www.football-italia.net/95978/milan-fly-qatar-afternoon

Dec 21, 2016

Milan will board a flight for Qatar at 2PM GMT, according to reports.

The Rossoneri were due to fly out for their Supercoppa Italiana match with Juventus yesterday, but suffered problems after their flight was cancelled.

Juventus have already arrived at their base and underwent a training session, meanwhile Vincenzo Montella was forced to hold training back in Milan.

Calciomercato.com claim that the squad will catch a flight out to Qatar from Malpensa airport this afternoon.

Yesterday, reports suggested that Milan might refuse to play the match alltogether after Vice President Adriano Galliani declared that the team had suffered a ‘serious sporting disadvantage’ as a result of the delay.

Marchisio: 'another trophy for 2016'

http://www.football-italia.net/95980/marchisio-another-trophy-2016

Dec 21, 2016

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio tells the Press he 'wants to close 2016 with a trophy'.

The Bianconeri take on Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana in Doha on Friday at 17:30 CET - 16:30GMT.

Although the 30-year-old wants to win, he also warned against complacency, pointing to defeats already suffered this term.

"It's one-off game, we take on a team that has done well and we will have to be attentive to bring this trophy home,” the midfielder told Tuttomercatoweb.

"We must not underestimate anyone. Milan, Inter and Genoa proved this: when there is no concentration we are at risk against everyone.

"The goal is to win, the strength of the group is this, we want to close 2016 with another trophy."

Milan President Silvio Berlusconi had joked that Serie A 'must change all the referees to stop Juve'. What does Marchisio think about this?

"Berlusconi's words? It was just a joke, I think about training and then I only talk about what’s on the pitch.

"For me it was a bittersweet year, I could win a third trophy but in the middle of it I had a serious injury.

"[Gonzalo] Higuain? He is a winner, he has found great desire in a group that always wants to win."

AC Milan midfielder Suso sets sights

on Supercoppa glory against Juventus

Dec 21, 2016

AC Milan midfielder Suso has set his sights on his first silverware with the club as he prepares for Friday's Italian Supercoppa showdown against Juventus in Doha.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who has played in all his side's Serie A matches this season, said the game would be the most important of his career so far.

A Milan win would bring him a second trophy after winning the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with Spain in 2012.

"It's without doubt the biggest game of my career," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"After this I'd put that European final and my debut in the Premier League for Liverpool -- it was against Manchester United and it was an incredible emotion.

"The truth is I'm in good shape physically and psychologically. When I'm feeling good, I know that I can always play and be a regular starter."

Suso put his form down to the faith shown in him by Milan coach Vincenzo Montella adding: "There was no way things could continue [at Liverpool] and I needed an opportunity.

"This is why I chose Milan, who are one of Europe's top clubs. It was tough to start with, but then I was given this chance thanks to Montella."

Suso said the coach was "not afraid to take risks" and would have the players -- who have already beaten Juventus in the league -- in the best frame of mind to face Juve.

"The only recipe we know to beat the Bianconeri is to remain focused for 90 minutes, otherwise it's impossible," the 23-year-old said.

"If you make a mistake they punish you immediately. And if you have an opportunity to score you cannot afford to miss it."

Suso said he hoped his current form would attract the attention of Spain coach Julen Lopetegui, under whose guidance he won the Under-19 Championship.

"I would like to play for the national team," he said. "If Lopetegui has given others a chance, why should he not give one to me?"

Marotta: ‘Delay won’t affect Milan’

http://www.football-italia.net/95981/marotta-‘delay-won’t-affect-milan’

Dec 21, 2016

Juventus general manager Giuseppe Marotta doesn’t believe Milan’s missed flight will affect the Supercoppa Italiana.

The Rossoneri’s plane suffered technical problems and was stuck in London, meaning they will arrive in Doha a day later than Friday’s opponents.

Joint-CEO Adriano Galliani has complained that this will disadvantage the Diavolo, but Marotta doesn’t see it that way.

“I think he’s a very experienced director who knows football well, he knows these things can happen,” Marotta told Sky.

“We don’t consider it to be polemic against us, we respected the schedule which was laid down by the Lega. If one arrives a day earlier or later it won’t affect the final.

“The modern theory which Coaches have is to arrive at the venue for the competition in some cases just hours before the match.

“So in fact while arriving a few days early could be beneficial it could also bring disadvantages. It’s about 20 degrees, so there isn’t a huge difference between Italy and here.

“Will Milan be disadvantaged? No, absolutely not, but I can understand the discomfort they’ve suffered. The fact you’re stood waiting at an airport for a plane is an inconvenience.

“I don’t think it’ll have much to do with whatever the outcome of Friday’s game is though.”

The director was also quizzed by RAI Sport on the issue of why the game is even being played in the Middle East.

“Because it’s an advert for Italian football, and I think it’s positive from every point of view. It’s not the first year that we’ve done it, and for me it’s the right decision.

“Milan threatened to pull out? I can’t see any reason for that, I’ll speak to Galliani.”

Finally, Premium Sport asked Marotta about Silvio Berlusconi’s comments that the referees will have to be changed to stop Juventus from winnning.

“Berlusconi said something sarcastic, he’s too intelligent to think that way. In the meantime, we’ve changed all the corner flags in our stadium which have the Juventus badge on them…

“We know that when you’re competing for a competition you want to win, the officials are indifferent.”

Galliani: ‘Happy to go to Doha’

http://www.football-italia.net/95983/galliani-‘happy-go-doha’

Dec 21, 2016

Adriano Galliani assures Milan are “happy to go to Doha” for a “very important final” against Juventus.

The Rossoneri’s plane was cancelled yesterday, meaning they’ll arrive in Qatar 24 hours later than their opponents for the Supercoppa Italiana on Friday.

The joint-CEO had complained that this was a “disadvantage” for the Diavolo, with reports the game could be in jeapordy, but the squad will fly out today.

“Quite simply there was a plane that didn’t arrive and it created this problem,” Galliani told reporters at Malpensa airport.

“If we took a bus we’d never have got to Doha. Now it seems that the problem is solved. We’re happy to go to Doha, we signed a contract with the Lega and with Juventus.

“It’s a simple case of one plane left and the other didn’t. We want to come into it all equal, I don’t want to cause controversy. I don’t care if it’s an advantage or a disadvantage.

“It’s a very important final, we’ve met Juventus three times this year and always played on par with them, one of those times we won and the other we did not.

“We lost in extra-time in one of the two finals [the Coppa Italia] and now we have a second final. It’s nice to meet Juventus four times in a calendar year.”

Galliani was also asked about Silvio Berlusconi’s comments, after the Milan President said referees would have to be changed to stop Juventus winning.

“It was a joke, would you please calm down?”

P.S. I love this game but I do not like Berlusconi's jokes! :sventola2:

How should Juventus line up on Friday

in the Italian Super Cup against Milan?

Who should fight for the cup on Christmas eve, eve?

Juventus will be looking to defend their Suppercoppa Italiana title on Friday, and will look to extend their dominance in the competition with their eighth victory. The match will be played in Doha, Qatar.

Their opponent will be the Rossoneri, who will be looking to capture their seventh Super Cup andbe tied for the competition record themselves. Milan has quietly had a solid start to the season thus far, sitting only two points behind Roma in the fight for second place in the league.

After this game, Juve’s next fixture will be after the holiday break on Sunday, Jan. 8, against Bologna, so there isn’t much incentive to rest anyone.

This week’s survey question comes courtesy of ogz, and is asking if you could only have one of the sixth straight Scudetto or Champions League title this year, which would it be? If anyone has other questions they would like to see asked, send them my way.

All things considered, who would you like to see start on Friday? Vote below! The results will be posted, as well as a few different takes on the lineup, including my own.

Remember, this is not what you expect the lineup to be, this is what you would do or what you would like to see.

Analysing Juventus' Progress at the Winter Break

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2682899-analysing-juventus-progress-at-the-winter-break

Dec 21, 2016

Looking at Juventus from afar, it would be easy to assume that the team will—pending their Supercoppa Italiana result against AC Milan on Friday—arrive at Italian football’s traditional winter break in good spirits.

While they will hope to beat the Rossoneri in Doha, Qatar, the Turin club hold a strong lead over their domestic rivals and topped their Champions League group.

Director general Beppe Marotta said in an interview with Radio Rai (h/t Juve’s official website) that both competitions are important to the club:

President Andrea Agnelli has already said that winning a sixth Serie A title on the spin would be a legendary achievement. It would be truly unique. We’d be putting into practice something that a few years ago was a dream and that now has all the ingredients to become reality.

[...]

The Champions League remains a stimulating objective, but we can’t forget that, whereas in the league it’s the strongest team that wins, in Europe there are many different factors that come into play, such as the draw, injuries and even weather conditions.

Marotta demands success.

However, after watching Juve’s performances in those competitions, there is room for much improvement.

What follows is a look at each department of the side, identifying who has played well and what has worked while also noting the players and combinations that need to improve.

Goalkeeper

Perhaps the most surprising note among Juve’s goalkeepers is that Neto has already played more minutes (315) in Serie A and the Champions League than he managed in the whole of last season (270).

The Brazilian, 27, was given his debut in UEFA’s elite competition when Dinamo Zagreb visited Juventus Stadium earlier this month, adding a clean sheet to the ones he had already kept against Pescara and Cagliari.

Enligt Aghemo på Sky har #Buffon fått ledigt i två dagar. Det kan innebära att det blir #Neto som står i mål mot Sampdoria.

Indeed, he was beaten just once as Sampdoria struck in October’s 4-1 Bianconeri triumph. Neto proved he is more than capable of filling in for Gigi Buffon when needed and is ready for the Coppa Italia to begin next month.

Ah yes, Buffon. The mustachioed skipper of the side has been in ridiculously good form, his performances defying the fact he will turn 39 in January.

He told a press conference earlier this year that he will "almost certainly" retire after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He shows no sign of deterioration, though, with the video in the tweet above showing how he managed to put an insane amount of effort into merely preventing a corner against AS Roma.

Buffon has conceded 13 goals in 15 Serie A outings, adding four clean sheets to the three he collected in Europe. He was beaten just twice in five Champions League appearances as both Sevilla and OlympiqueLyonnais scored past the Italy captain.

Defence

Part of the reason Buffon and Neto have done so well lies with the defence in front of them. According to WhoScored.com statistics, Juventus allow opponents just 8.2 shots per game, the lowest figure in Serie A and 1.2 attempts fewer than any other side in the division.

The likes of Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini, Patrice Evra, Dani Alves, Medhi Benatia and Stephan Lichtsteiner have all played their part when called upon. The latter—as this previous post explains—has struggled the most, but it is three other players who have done the most to maintain Juve's proud record.

25 - Juventus have won each of their last 25 home league games, equalling their record set between Aug 2013 and Nov 2014. Stadium. #JuveRoma

As he has for over a year, Leonardo Bonucci has been the driving force at the back. Now one of Europe's elite defenders, the Italy international leads the unit perfectly, his blend of on-the-ball skill and man-marking prowess unrivalled by his peers.

Juventus were pleased to announce via their official website on Monday that the 29-year-old had committed his future to the club, while Buffon explained the importance of keeping the in-demand star.

"It's great news, because Leo had been on a path of exponential and continuous growth," the captain told Mediaset Premium (h/t Football Italia). "He's a reference point for Juve and for us players, and the certainty that he'll remain at Juventus for many more years is something very important and which will help all the fans sleep soundly at night."

A rock-solid defender with huge goals up his sleeve.@bonucci_leo19 proud to extend his  journey http://ow.ly/23A2307fNft  #Bonucci2021

They can indeed, while also knowing that Daniele Rugani has gone from being a talented prospect to an essential member of the team. Injuries to other defenders have pushed forward his case, and this previous post explains how the former Empoli man has seized that chance with both hands.

Alex Sandro has continued his own growth too, supplanting Evra as first choice on the left side of the back line, marrying his innate attacking prowess with intelligent defensive diligence.

Midfield

While the unit behind them has performed well, the midfield has been a serious problem for Juventus. The three obvious members of the starting XI—Claudio Marchisio, Sami Khedira and Miralem Pjanic—have done well individually, but collectively they have struggled for cohesion and balance.

Perhaps that is best summed up in the performances of the latter. Pjanic has done well when coach Massimiliano Allegri has used him behind the strikers in a 4-3-1-2 formation, but in a midfield three he has struggled to make an impact.

There is an inescapable feeling the team lacks one more player in this department in order to make them a complete side—that must become a priority when the winter transfer market opens.

Attack

Much like the midfield, the Juventus attack has battled chemistry problems but has done well individually. Mario Mandzukic has fought as usual and weighed in with five goals, but he looked increasingly frustrated when Paulo Dybala wasn’t beside him after they struck up a sound understanding last term.

5KFLrj4Vx3ZBz3xE.jpg

Pjanic's goal. 3-1. Look at Dybala in the build up. Magical.

The Argentina international missed a sustained period of action after straining a thigh muscle in October's defeat to AC Milan, but he has begun to look back to his best in recent weeks. His cameo appearances off the bench against Torino and AS Roma lend belief to the theory that the team will improve when he is 100 percent healthy.

One man who appears to be firing on all cylinders, though, is Gonzalo Higuain. Well-marshalled by Roma in last weekend’s top-of-the-table clash, the former Napoli man decided the game with his one clear chance, dumping Daniele De Rossi on his backside and slamming the ball into the net.

It took his tally to 13 in all competitions, prompting him to laugh off suggestions he has something to prove. "I do not know, I play only to help the team and win," Higuain told La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia). "The opinions are yours, I respect them, but I am always quiet. Even when I do not score."

Via @PremiumSportHD

Juventus will hope he continues to let his prowess in front of goal do the talking, but the striker has helped mask some flaws. As 2017 gets under way, Juventus might do well to hope for health in defence, some new arrivals in midfield and a continuation of their improving attacking chemistry.

That is the path towards being the complete team they need to be to achieve their lofty goals, which are certainly attainable should they manage to add those elusive elements.

AC Milan general manager Adriano Galliani has retracted his threat to withdraw the club from Friday's Supercoppa clash with Juventus after the plane to take them to Doha arrived on Wednesday.

The Rossoneri were left in Milan on Tuesday when their chartered plane was stuck at London Stansted airport due to a technical problem.

The team decided to remain in Milan overnight and train at their Milanello facilities on Wednesday morning before flying to Qatar in the afternoon.

Galliani said they had suffered "serious sporting damage" by being forced to follow their opponents Juve with a 24-hour delay and told ANSA that they would not even bother making the trip if the plane did not arrive on Wednesday.

Previously, Galliani said that Juve had gained an unfair advantage due to the travel disruption.

"Juventus are already relaxed in the warmth and will train at 20 degrees higher than what we are getting at Milanello, then we're going to arrive at night and only have time for a final warm-up on the eve of the game," he said.

With the plane landing in Milan Malpensa airport as scheduled, however, Galliani has changed his tone and said the Rossoneri are looking forward to upsetting the odds by getting their hands on the trophy.

"We are delighted to be going to Doha, there's no controversy," he told reporters at Malpensa. "It's just the plane that was meant to come didn't arrive, but now it seems to be here, so all's fine and we are leaving.

"This wasn't part of the plan, but it has happened. There's nobody to blame, just a plane which didn't turn up."

The Rossoneri's expedition finally took off at 15:00 p.m. CET on Wednesday.

Juventus

Juventus once again prevailed last Saturday, defeating the most credible Scudetto rival Roma thanks to an early goal by Gonzalo Higuain. A victory that stretches the gap from the closest pursuer to seven points: a safe advantage that we will probably be able to widen even further by the time Champions League football returns and it’ll allow the coach to manage the energies.

Once again, it was not a perfect performance by the Old Lady, but it was enough to best the opponent. The approach was great, with the right level of intensity and capped off by a gem by Higuain. Juventus outmatched Roma in the first half an hour and that proved to be the deciding factor. The Giallorossi tried to react and played much better in the second half, putting on a siege in the final stages of the game, but the defence stood tall and allowed good chances only on set pieces.

Two players stood out. Daniele Rugani had an incredible performance: he blanketed Edin Dzeko and at times showed a level of emotions we are not used to seeing from the defender. He was in the zone. Stefano Sturaro battled all night long with more decorated players like Radja Nainggolan, Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman and proved why he is simply the right guy to field in certain games. He brings a level of grit of physicality that is unmatched by the other midfielders. It was very nice to see two youngsters who will be here for the long run step up in a big game after signing lengthy extensions.

The final game of 2016 will be the Supercoppa in Doha against Milan: of course finals are always a little wonky but I am sure the squad will not underestimate the game after being defeated by the Rossoneri in Serie A. Lifting the trophy would be the ideal way to close a successful year.

Juventus are dealing with two significant injury concerns: they are not heavy problems, but they impact the scheme. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Miralem Pjanic left the Roma game with apparent ailments, but both travelled to Qatar. It looks like it was just a bruise for the midfielder, who should be ready to play, while the situation is a little murkier for the fullback.

Since Dani Alves is out with a fractured fibula, Lichtsteiner is the only true right back available and his absence would pretty much force Massimiliano Allegri to switch back to 3-5-2 or to come up with a creative solution. Medhi Benatia has some experience in that position from his Udinese stint and Andrea Barzagli has played there from time to time, but always with Juan Cuadrado in front of him in a hybrid 4-4-2, so he had never had to cover the whole length of the flank, like it would be the case with a diamond formation. Cuadrado was used in the defence against Dinamo Zagreb, but that was not a real game and it would be extremely gutsy to repeat the experiment against a fiery opponent.

Therefore, until there are more clarity about Lichtsteiner, 3-5-2 is the frontrunner and the deficit in creativity caused by moving Pjanic back in the midfield could be compensated by inserting Paulo Dybala in the starting lineup. The Argentinian has yet to play a full half since his return, but he is now two weeks removed from being deemed fully healthy and should have at least an hour in his legs. Also, at this point, I think it is easier to sub him off rather than Mario Mandzukic or Higuain. Of course, should Lichtsteiner be ready, Allegri would go with 4-3-1-2, with Sturaro in the midfield and Cuadrado initially on the bench.

Probable lineup:

3-5-2: Buffon; Rugani, Barzagli, Chiellini; Cuadrado, Khedira, Marchisio, Pjanic, Sandro; Dybala, Higuain.

Injuries:

Bonucci (hamstring),  Alves (fibula), Mandragora (foot).

Suspensions:

None.

AC Milan

After a couple of very good months, Milan have tailed off a little bit in the last two games and have dropped to the fifth position in the standings. The loss, somewhat underserved, against Roma probably rocked their confidence a little bit and then they were unable to perform at their best against the always dangerous Atalanta. Two costly stumbles that allowed Napoli and Lazio to leapfrog them.

In Serie A, Milan caught Juventus at the right time, after a demanding midweek away game against Olympique Lyonnais. They played us tough, like they do with everybody, and capitalized on a stunner by Manuel Locatelli. They are not much different now from the team that we faced us in late October, and maybe the lack of improvements is what made them drop some points along the way.

The noticeable change is the emergence of Mario Pasalic, who is pretty raw but has the tools to develop into a complete midfielder, and the wane of Mbaye Niang, who has momentarily lost his starting position. It looks like Giacomo Bonaventura will move from the midfield to the attack, with either Andrea Bertolacci or Pasalic in the midfield and Niang on the bench. Bonaventura does not have a lot of speed in his game, but he is a playmaker no matter where he plays and the team always tends to gravitate around him. Suso has also come along in a big way, so Milan will have two very dangerous wingers on the pitch. Even if he does not start, Niang could be a nice weapon off the bench even though he is underperforming as of late.

Gianluca Lapadula has taken advantage of a minor injury to Carlos Bacca to gain some starts and he has been pretty good, although feeding the striker remains a problem for this squad as they seem to be unable to create clear-cut chances for its center-forward. One or two balls in the box is not always enough for a striker to score, even though Bacca and Lapadula are both very cynical. It looks like the Colombian will reclaim his spot in the XI in this one.

Andrea Bertolacci relieved Locatelli in the heart of the midfield in the last game, but that is not his best position: maybe in January they will have to find an alternative to Locatelli, who is excellent for being a 18-years-old rookie, but really does not possess any quality that stands out besides his shooting ability. However, Bertolacci has done enough to challenge Pasalic for the starting job as box-to-box midfielder, and is also way more experienced, should Bonaventura be advanced. Luca Antonelli has returned from a long absence and he could supplant the starter Mattia De Sciglio at left back.

Probable lineup:

4-3-3: Donnarumma; Abate, Paletta, Romagnoli, De Sciglio; Kucka, Locatelli, Bertolacci; Suso, Bacca, Bonaventura.

Injuries:

Calabria (ankle).

Suspensions:

None.

Miralem Pjanic assures he is fully fit and ready to start for Juventus against Milan in Friday’s Italian Super Cup clash.

It kicks off in Doha at 17.30 CET - 16.30 GMT and is essentially a replay of the Coppa Italia Final in May.

“I don’t care who finds the net, what counts is that we win,” Pjanic told the official Juventus website.

This is the second meeting with Milan this season, having lost 2-1 at San Siro in Serie A.

“It was a complicated game against a side that was strong and well-prepared. We got over that defeat and went forward in Serie A and the Champions League.

“Milan are doing well and it’ll be tough on Friday, but I want to win and take this trophy home to Turin. This squad is united and aware of its strength.”

Pjanic had been in doubt for the Supercoppa Italiana due to a knock he sustained against Roma.

“I have recovered. I absolutely want to be at the disposal of the team and I am ready to play.”

Suso: 'Milan can change things'

http://www.football-italia.net/96011/suso-milan-can-change-things

Dec 21, 2016

Suso feels Milan “have a great opportunity to change things” in the Italian Super Cup against Juventus after finally landing in Doha.

The match kicks off on Friday at 17.30 CET - 16.30 GMT and it is a replay of the Coppa Italia Final in May, won by Juve in extra time.

“We are in good shape and could’ve beaten Roma and Atalanta, as we are playing well and are improving,” Suso told MilanNews.it.

“A final is always a little different and both teams will be fired up. Juventus are very strong, but we’ll do everything to win. We beat them at San Siro a couple of months ago and can do it again.

“We are a fine group of players, the Coach is doing a good job and we must continue like this.”

The Rossoneri were meant to be in Doha yesterday, but were held up in London by a mechanical fault on their plane, so only arrived this evening.

“It would’ve been better if we had arrived yesterday, but I think it’s more or less the same thing. A Final against Juventus is a very important opportunity to win and start changing things. After many years without silverware, it’s a great chance to make our mark.

“I prefer to play less well and win the game.”

Dybala: 'When Milan beat Juve...'

Dec 21, 2016

Paulo Dybala believes Juventus will prove their defeat to Milan was a fluke as they meet again in the Italian Super Cup.

It kicks off in Doha on Friday at 17.30 CET -16.30 GMT.

The Bianconeri won the Coppa Italia Final in extra time in May and lost at San Siro when these sides clashed in Serie A.

“That game in Milan was affected by the Miralem Pjanic goal that was incorrectly disallowed, as that could’ve changed things,” Dybala told the official club website.

“I think on Friday it will be a very different game. We are coming off some important victories, are playing good football and are really fired up.

“We’ve done some great things so far, but mustn’t rest on our laurels. This is a very important match, we want to win the Super Cup again.”

Dybala was injured in the Milan game while trying to score from the centre-circle, but has made a couple of substitute appearances since his recovery. Will he start in Doha?

“It’s up to the Coach to decide who plays, but I am ready.”

Juventus just can't win  .penso

Even if they win the Supercoppa in Doha, there’s really no winning for Juventus, as Gaby McKay explains.

http://www.football-italia.net/96018/juventus-just-cant-win

Dec 22, 2016

Friday’s Supercoppa Italiana has the potential to define the prevailing calcio narrative for the coming campaigns. If Milan win, beating Juventus for the second time this season, it will be seen as a sleeping giant finally getting back in the fight, with a young core of Italian players.

Victory for the Bianconeri would confirm the worst fears of many - that Max Allegri’s side are simply too far ahead of the competition. Not since Napoli in December 2014 has the Old Lady been denied a domestic trophy, and a fourth Super Cup in five years would underline their dominance.

In truth though, there is really only one side who can win. It may not be the most glamorous competition, but for the Rossoneri to win the Supercoppa - a first piece of silverware since lifting the same prize in 2011 - would offer a serious boost in confidence. For Juventus, however, it would be viewed as merely an appetiser for presumed greater prizes later this season.

Such are the standards that Gianluigi Buffon and co have set themselves in recent years, the Super Cup can only be seen as the start of a path to another Double, or even the elusive Treble.

The expectations in Turin this season are sky-high, and only a deep run in the Champions League will truly satisfy expectations. Having come within one game of that aforementioned Treble in 2015, last year saw the Bianconeri eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Round of 16. Players, directors and supporters alike have made it clear that they want to get their hands on the big-eared trophy this time around.

Are these expectations fair? After all, only one club can win the Champions League each season. Whereas reaching the final in 2015 was marked as a great achievement, the players able to hold their heads high even in defeat, a runner-up position this year would probably be seen as a failure of sorts.

For supporters of every other team in Italy, it would represent a rare opportunity to laugh at the Bianconeri - so dominant on the peninsula, Juve have lost six European Cup or Champions League finals to date. They’d be the ultimate winners who choke on the grandest stage. For Juventini, the talk would be of a final frontier which the Old Lady is not yet ready to cross, of a squad which pulverises domestic opposition, but lags behind Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Since when did winning the Scudetto become so blasé? The title race is, of course, far from over, but Juve are odds-on favourite to retain their title. No side has ever won six Scudetti in a row - though Il Grande Torino surely would have, if not for Superga - and to do so would be an epic achievement. You wouldn’t bet against a third consecutive Coppa Italia triumph either.

The Bianconeri’s domestic dominance will pass, all these things do. But when people look back on this period in decades to come, their achievements will be given a lot more credit than some contemporary judgements would allow. Juventus have returned from purgatory in Serie B to dominate Italian football like they never could previously. You can view this as Rocky getting off the canvas or Sauron returning to Mordor (depending on your affiliation), but it’s an incredible feat.

For Milan, winning in Doha would send an important message. A Juventus win will be greeted with shrugs, not least from their own fans. As those associated with the Bianconeri are fond of saying “the most important victory is always the next one,” but it’s unfair to write-off domestic achievements if European glory doesn’t follow.

So no, even with a win in Doha, Juve can’t really win; but locking down another domestic trophy shouldn't be dismissed. Trophies have to be earned, and adding another to the collection will always have value, regardless of which prizes still lay tantalisingly out of reach.

Juventus vs. AC Milan: 2016 Italian Super Cup

AC Milan will face Juventus for the Italian Super Cup on Friday. The game will take place in Doha, Qatar, an arrangement that's already caused problems for the Rossoneri.

Milan will be hoping to reverse some rough recent history against Juve. The Old Lady beat the San Siro side in last year's Coppa Italia final thanks to an Alvaro Morata goal in extra time.

Juve are also still dominant in Italy's top flight. The Turin side leads Serie A by seven points, while Milan are nine points behind in fifth.

Preview

Milan's preparations for the match have already been interrupted. The squad's flight to Dohar was cancelled, making them late by a day, according to Daniella Matar of the Associated Press (h/t MailOnline).

Milan officials have since sought to play down the disruption and its consequences. Club chief executive Adriano Galliani dismissed any controversy, per Brian Homewood of Reuters: "It would be better if both teams arrived at the same time, but I don't want to get involved in a controversy."

Milan's travel arrangements may not have run smoothly, but there's still enough talent in the squad to upset the Serie A champions. Specifically, striker Carlos Bacca is a goalscoring menace even a hard-nosed Juventus back line will find tough to subdue.

Who will win?

  • Milan

    58.4%

  • Juventus

    41.6%

The 30-year-old has scored six times in Serie A, according to WhoScored.com. Bacca is so valuable that Galliani has warned off potential buyers from the Premier League, per Italian source Mediaset Premium (h/t James Benge of the London Evening Standard).

Of course, the Rossoneri will need the ball to supply the Colombia international with chances. Establishing and maintaining possession won't be easy against a Juve side deep and talented in midfield.

One talisman in the middle is the oft-injured but brilliant Claudio Marchisio. The 30-year-old is wary of Milan's desire for revenge, per FourFourTwo.

Milan can counter Juve's strength in the middle by getting the ball to stylish playmaker Suso as often as possible. The 23-year-old Spaniard is in a rich vein of form on manager Vincenzo Montella's watch, according to Adam Bate of Sky Sports:

Only two men have more Serie A assists, while he's also among the top 20 goalscorers in Italy. Suso ranks fourth overall for successful dribbles so far this season too. This is a player who is proving both exciting to watch and effective with it.

If Suso is given the time to pick passes between the lines, Bacca will get the chances he needs to give Juve a scare. However, if the Turin outfit produce their usual control of midfield, Marchisio and Co. will bring home yet another trophy.

Chiellini: ‘Dybala can be decisive’

http://www.football-italia.net/96022/chiellini-‘dybala-can-be-decisive’

Dec 22, 2016

Giorgio Chiellini backs his Juventus teammate Paulo Dybala to be decisive in tomorrow’s Supercoppa.

The Bianconeri will face Milan in Doha tomorrow afternoon, as they look to win the trophy for a fourth time in five years.

“One player on each side who could be decisive?” Chellini considered, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“For us I choose Dybala. For them I choose… the post!

“It’s a one-off game in which incidents count even more, and in which the approach and attitude you bring can immediately take you a step further.

“In a final you have to be switched on for 90 minutes, it’s different across a League season.

“When the Coppa Italia starts people don’t give a damn, but then those who get to the semi-final realise they were right to believe in it.

“It’s the same with the Supercoppa Italiana, if you win you enjoy it. If you lose it gnaws at you. I want to enjoy it.”

The last time the two sides met was at San Siro earlier this season, with the Rossoneri coming away with a win.

“That defeat wasn’t so bad, it was certainly decided by an incident [Miralem Pjanic’s wrongly disallowed goal] although our approach still wasn’t the best.

“That game also told us though that if you don’t show up in the big matches, well, you don’t win. Milan deserve the League position they have.

“Carlos Bacca or Gianluca Lapadula? It’s not like I’d be happy if I heard Bacca wasn’t playing, because while Lapadula is a different player he’s shown he’s in form.

“They’re both good and dangerous. Milan don’t just have them though, they also have [M’Baye Niang]. They have alternatives in every position and good players.

“They deserve our utmost respect.”

Silvio Berlusconi stoked controversy in the build-up by saying that the only way to stop Juve’s dominance is to “change all the referees”.

“I’ve been at Juventus for 12 years and I’ve heard these kind of things from all colours, and worse,” Chiellini shrugged.

“And I’d say that Berlusconi has been in finals, he knows what certain situations mean. One thing is certain, his joke didn’t affect us in the least.

“President Andrea Agnelli said ‘outside they don’t care who wins, just that Juventus don’t win’. That’s how it is, but it only gives us more strength.

“The fact that we’ve had this long period of dominance is a good thing, it should motivate everyone. Maybe there are some who don’t remember how Juve were seen in [Antonio] Conte’s first year.

“We were seen as the most sympathetic team in Italy. It’s not like that today. I’d prefer to continue with the antipathy.”

Chiellini is part of the famous ‘BBC’ defence, along with Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci, but Daniele Rugani is starting to push for a place.

“The BBC is still alive, and let me say that I’m happy for Rugani. I said he’d be the future of Juventus right from the early days when he set foot here.

“His renewal is a strong signal for a lad with his quality, he’s maturing. He’s not yet been able to consistently express his true ability.

“Eventually one of the BBC will be replaced? Look, this year we are five central defenders [the BBC, Rugani and Medhi Benatia] and we’ve each played a good number of matches.

“That’s a good thing, because you can’t play 60 intense games a year. The important thing is that we’ll be in top condition when the battles of March and April come around.”

Juventus 1-1 AC Milan (AET, Pens 3-4): Pasalic

punishes Bianconeri misses in shootout

Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala misses proved costly as the resurgent

San Siro side lifted their first piece of silverware under Vincenzo Montella.

Dec 23, 2016

Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the decisive penalty from Paulo Dybala as AC Milan won the Supercoppa Italiana 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time with Juventus in Doha.

Mario Pasalic sealed victory for Milan after Donnarumma had spurned Dybala, who also missed a gilt-edged extra-time chance.

Mario Mandzukic also missed from 12 yards, with Gianluca Lapadula reprieved having failed to convert from 12 yards for Milan.

In the match itself, captain Giorgio Chiellini put Juve ahead 18 minutes, but Giacomo Bonaventura levelled with a header prior to half-time.

Alessio Romagnoli hit the bar for Milan as Vincenzo Montella's men shaded the second half, before having to withstand heavy Juve pressure as 30 minutes of extra time failed to produce a winner.

The win on penalties mean Milan now join Juve in having won the trophy a record seven times, with Montella claiming his first trophy with the Rossoneri.

Massimiliano Allegri's men, meanwhile, have appeared in five straight editions of the Supercoppa, winning three – but losing on the two occasions it has been played in Qatar.

Juve had made a strong start to the match, with Mandzukic and Stefano Sturaro testing Donnarumma, but the teenage goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Chiellini's flicked header from a Miralem Pjanic corner flying beyond him.

Allegri's men were in control, but they lost Alex Sandro through injury and suffered more frustration when Milan moved level after 38 minutes.

Suso drifted in from the right and sent in an in-swinging cross which was impressively headed in by Bonaventura - a slight deflection off Stephan Lichtsteiner gave Gianluigi Buffon no chance on his 600th Juve appearance.

Milan almost completed the comeback early in the second half, Romagnoli's deft header hitting the bar from another brilliant Suso delivery.

A thrilling Supercoppa continued with Donnarumma making a superb save from Sami Khedira's 20-yard drive at the other end after Gonzalo Higuain had created the opportunity.

Allegri brought on Dybala in a bid to settle a balanced tie and the striker fired narrowly wide shortly after his arrival, before testing Donnarumma with another effort.

Milan's main chances were coming in the air and Carlos Bacca had an aerial effort beaten away by Buffon, with in-form Suso again the creator.

That save ensured the match moved into extra-time, where Buffon denied Bonaventura and Bacca somehow failed to turn in the rebound from close range, Chiellini making the key block.

Higuain had a penalty claim turned rejected for Juve after going down under pressure from Gabriel Paletta, while substitute Patrice Evra had a goal correctly ruled out for offside.

Dybala missed the best chance of the additional period, blazing over from Evra's cross before the Juve defender was fuming at another failed penalty appeal – this time for a Mattia De Sciglio handball - as the match moved to spot-kicks.

In the shoot-out, Buffon kept out Lapadula to give Juve the advantage, only for Mandzukic to power an effort against the bar.

Both teams were level at 3-3 after four penalties each when Donnarumma made a tremendous save from Dybala, allowing Pasalic to seal victory.

Milan beat Juve in Super Cup shoot-out

Milan have won the Supercoppa Italiana after a 1-1 draw with Juventus,

as Gigio Donnarumma’s penalty shoot-out save on Paulo Dybala proved decisive.

Dec 23, 2016

This was traditionally a clash between the Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia holders, but as Juve got both those trophies in 2016, their opponents in Doha were beaten Coppa Finalists Milan. The Rossoneri’s last piece of silverware was the Supercoppa in 2011, when Max Allegri was in charge. Leonardo Bonucci, Dani Alves and not 100 per cent fit Andrea Barzagli missed out, while Miralem Pjanic was preferred to Paulo Dybala. Milan had beaten Juventus 1-0 with a Manuel Locatelli scorcher in Serie A in October.

Gigi Buffon marked his 600th appearance for the Turin giants.

Mario Mandzukic had the first genuine chance after seven minutes, his fierce snapshot beaten round the base of the near post by Gigio Donnarumma, then Stefano Sturaro pressured the goalkeeper on a back-pass.

Donnarumma was again called into action on Sturaro’s strike, but on the resulting corner Giorgio Chiellini volleyed in with his shin-pad to give Juventus the lead.

Suso went close to an equaliser, his finish skimming the upright, but Alex Sandro limped off with a muscular problem to make way for Patrice Evra.

Juraj Kucka’s header from a free kick was too weak to trouble Buffon, then Carlos Bacca’s first touch was poor. However, Milan did equalise when Suso whipped in a cross from the right and Bonaventura ducked slightly to steer his glancing header into the far top corner.

Stephan Lichtsteiner was very lucky not to receive a second yellow for an elbow on Bonaventura and Ignazio Abate dived in to stop Sturaro scoring at the far post from Mandzukic’s cross.

After the restart Bonaventura and Andrea Bertolacci just failed to get their heads to dangerous crosses, while Gonzalo Higuain’s ferocious angled drive flashed wide of the far post.

Milan went closer to taking the lead, as Chiellini deflected a Suso effort and on the corner Alessio Romagnoli’s header looped on to the crossbar.

Sami Khedira unleashed a screamer from distance and Donnarumma flew for a decisive save with his trailing hand under the bar, a sense of déjà vu from his last-gasp block in the Milan victory at San Siro.

Bacca diving in couldn’t make contact with Juraj Kucka’s cross at the back post for what would’ve been a tap-in and Gabriel Paletta got the block in on Sturaro.

Paulo Dybala replaced Pjanic for a trident attack and it changed the inertia of the game, as Juve started a period of sustained pressure and La Joya drilled inches past the near post.

Max Allegri was forced into the final substitution, as Sturaro went off with an ankle problem. Dybala had another strike from 20 metres to test Donnarumma, but Buffon flew to fingertip a Bacca header on to the underside of the bar.

The two teams could not be divided and, just like the Coppa Italia Final in May, it went to extra time in Doha.

Milan somehow failed to take the lead two minutes in, as Suso’s cross found Bonaventura at the back post to test Buffon and it bounced into the path of Bacca, who hesitated when trying to tap in from six yards.

Suso was torturing the Bianconeri, so Allegri moved Khedira over to his flank, as Mario Lemina was really struggling. Gianluca Lapadula was unleashed from the bench and Ignazio Abate went off with cramp.

Higuain stung Donnarumma’s gloves at the near post and Evra thought he had scored on 111 minutes, but was clearly offside on the Dybala through ball.

With three minutes to go in extra time, Evra rolled across for the unmarked Dybala, who incredibly ballooned over the bar from 12 yards.

Donnarumma then denied Dybala at the near stick and there were timid Juve penalty appeals with the last kick of the game, but Evra flicked it on to Mattia De Sciglio’s arm.

Just like the Champions League Final, Juventus and Milan went to a penalty shoot-out on foreign soil for silverware.

Lapadula saw the spot-kick parried, but Mandzukic hit the crossbar. When Dybala saw his spot-kick saved by a sensational Donnarumma one-handed save, Mario Pasalic kept his cool to convert the winning penalty and give Milan their first trophy since 2011.

Injured captain Riccardo Montolivo lifted it along with the captain on the night, Ignazio Abate.

Vincenzo Montella felt Milan “deserved to win in 90 minutes” after beating Juventus for the Supercoppa Italiana on a penalty shoot-out.

Jack Bonaventura had cancelled out the Giorgio Chiellini opener in Doha, but the sides could only be divided on spot-kicks.

“It’s a nice feeling to win. The lads have to see this as a good starting point for the future, as we played on a par with a great side like Juventus,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“I am very happy for President Silvio Berlusconi, as we know how much he cared about this trophy and we dedicate it to him.

“In the first 20 minutes we weren’t our usual selves, but we shrugged off the tension and slowly improved as the game wore on. We created many chances and deserved to win in 90 minutes.

“Fatigue set in and we dipped in terms of intensity during extra time, but to lose when Paulo Dybala had that chance at the end would’ve been cruel.”

Allegri: 'Juve should've done better'

Dec 23, 2016

Max Allegri complimented Milan for the Supercoppa Italiana victory, but Juventus “should’ve done better over 120 minutes.”

Giorgio Chiellini had opened the scoring, wiped out by a Giacomo Bonaventura header, and it was decided on a penalty shoot-out in Doha.

“We did everything to avoid penalties. After the goal we got a bit too deep and passed it backwards, so that changed the game,” Allegri told Rai Sport.

“If this had been a Serie A game, it would’ve been decided by an incident. As it’s the Super Cup, it was decided on penalties.

“We’ve had many matches this season and fatigue can cause problems. I was forced into two substitutions, unfortunately.”

Juventus had penalty appeals with the last kick of extra time, but Patrice Evra seemed to chip it straight on to Mattia De Sciglio’s arm.

“It wasn’t a penalty, absolutely. We should’ve done better over the 120 minutes.”

Suso caused all sorts of problems down Milan’s right flank, first for Alex Sandro and then Evra.

“He had a good game and the moment he became less dangerous, Milan didn’t create anything. I have to compliment Milan, as they put in a strong performance.”

Juventus also lost the 2014 Italian Super Cup in Doha on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Napoli.

“We lost twice in Doha, hopefully the third one will go better. We’d prefer to play it in pre-season rather than in December. The fact remains we are top of the Serie A table, top of our Champions League group and we were unbeaten on the field today, so with penalties it can happen.”

Juventus vs. AC Milan: Score, Reaction

Dec 23, 2016

AC Milan shocked Juventus in the 2016 Italian Super Cup in Doha, Qatar, on Friday, beating the Serie A champions on penalties. The match ended with a score of 1-1, and the Rossoneri won the shootout 4-3.

Giorgio Chiellini gave the Bianconeri an early lead, but Giacomo Bonaventura tied things up before half-time.

Both teams had their moments in the second half, although Milan gradually took the upper hand. Neither team would score again in regulation, and penalties eventually decided the winner. Gianluigi Donnarumma stopped Paulo Dybala's effort, and Mario Pasalic fired his team to the title.

As Juventus' official Twitter account shared, star forward Dybala started on the bench, with the Argentinian still looking for his best form after a lengthy absence due to injury:

#Juventus XI: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Rugani, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Khedira, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pjanic; Mandzukic, Higuain. #JuveMilan

Star goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon reached an incredible milestone on Friday:

Milan kept Gianluca Lapadula on the bench, with an out-of-form Carlos Bacca starting in his place:

#ACMilan XI: Donnarumma; Abate, Paletta, Romagnoli, De Sciglio; Kucka, Locatelli, Bertolacci; Suso, Bacca, Bonaventura #JuveMilan

Juventus got off to a quick start, as Stefano Sturaro had a shot blocked, and it took just minutes for Milan to voice their displeasure with the official. Chiellini tripped up Bacca, who was rightly frustrated when he wasn't awarded a free-kick.

Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain combined to give the latter a shooting chance, with Donnarumma making a fine save, before it was Juventus' turn to complain about the officiating. Pjanic was run over on the edge of the box while in the process of shooting, but once again, the referee didn't budge.

The Bianconeri continued their solid start, and Mario Mandzukic put Donnarumma to work with a hard shot.

Sturaro put pressure on Donnarumma with an ambitious slide, and the midfielder forced a difficult clearance, with the ball eventually landing with Higuain. Gabriel Paletta pulled down the Argentinian, giving Pjanic a free-kick from a great position. The Bosnian hit the wall, however.

Donnarumma made another massive save after 17 minutes, as Higuain played in Sturaro after a quick counter. Pjanic delivered a perfect delivery from the resulting corner, however, and Chiellini poked the ball home.

Injured team-mate Leonardo Bonucci loved it:

Milan tried to respond through Suso, who curled a great shot just past the far post, but Buffon covered his angles.

Things got a little heated when Mandzukic and Paletta had words, and Pjanic caught Andrea Bertolacci immediately after; the foul should have warranted a card. Alex Sandro entertained the crowd with a fantastic nutmeg on Suso, prompting this tweet from David Amoyal, a writer for Gianlucadimarzio.com:

Considering lack of quality left backs Alex Sandro was almost as brilliant a signing as Dybala

Unfortunately for the Bianconeri, the Brazilian limped off the pitch with an injury in the first half, with Patrice Evra replacing him.

Juraj Kucka beat Daniele Rugani to a high cross but couldn't direct a tame header past Buffon, with the first half drawing to a close. Milan didn't have many chances, but their high press led to one or two issues in the Juventus defence, and Bonaventura took full advantage.

The midfielder easily beat Buffon with a header after a fine cross from Suso, who is quickly becoming a favourite of BT Sport's Adam Summerton:

Yet another assist for Suso, outstanding header from Bonaventura - 1-1 in Doha #SupercoppaTim #JuveMilan

There was still time for Sturaro to almost put Juventus back in front, but he couldn't connect with a great cross from Mandzukic. Some late pressure from the Bianconeri led to a few half-chances but no more goals.

The Bianconeri started the second half on the front foot, with Milan aiming for the counter. Bacca and Bertolacci couldn't make the most of their looks on goal, as the Rossoneri started to find some success with crosses.

On the other side of the pitch, Higuain tried to surprise Donnarumma with a shot from a difficult angle, but the ball flew wide and the youngster had it covered.

Chiellini blocked a shot from Suso, and the resulting corner saw Alessio Romagnoli hit the crossbar with a difficult header. Milan seized momentum, but Juventus almost shocked the Rossoneri, with Sami Khedira drawing a fantastic save from Donnarumma.

Vince Van Genechten of Het Nieuwsblad was impressed:

When #Donnarumma makes a save, it's sensational. You can put money on it #JuveMilan #SupercoppaTim

Bacca came close to scoring, as he missed a cross from Kucka in front of goal. Juventus needed a spark, and with the crowd chanting Dybala's name, manager Massimiliano Allegri introduced the starlet midway through the second half.

Sturaro almost bundled home after a good cross from Evra, and Higuain and Dybala put together a fine combination, nearly isolating Mandzukic in front of goal. Dybala transformed the Juventus attack, and the former Palermo man almost gave his team the lead with a hard strike that barely missed the target.

The 23-year-old drew another fine save from Donnarumma, who once again showed why he's considered the best young goalkeeper in the world. Veteran stopper Buffon showed he's still an elite option as well, however, making a superb reflex save to deny Bacca.

Milan mounted a late offensive, but chances were few. Bacca was left unmarked inside the box, but he couldn't get enough of the ball to head home a high cross.

The Rossoneri appeared the fresher team heading into extra time, and somehow Milan didn't take an early lead in the first period. Buffon made a great save on Bonaventura, but the rebound fell kindly to Bacca, who couldn't work the ball past Chiellini. Football Italia couldn't believe it:

Suso kept finding success against Evra, but chances were few. Higuain tried to work his way past three defenders before going down in the box, but there appeared to be minimal contact, and the official didn't award a penalty.

Higuain drew a save from Donnarumma early in the second half, but both teams were tiring, and the pace of the match dropped sharply. Evra thought he had scored a late go-ahead goal, but he was correctly flagged down for offside. Dybala also went close, and perhaps he should have scored after good work from Evra.

Claudio Marchisio opened the shootout with a fantastic strike into the top corner, and Buffon denied Lapadula to give Juventus the perfect start. Mandzukic hit the crossbar, and Bonaventura tied things up.

Higuain, Kucka, Khedira and Suso all scored, before Donnarumma saved Dybala's strike. Then Chelsea loanee Pasalic stepped up to the plate and delivered, handing Milan revenge for the loss in the Coppa Italia final.

Speaking to Rai Sport (h/t Football Italia), Allegri thought his team should have done better on Friday:

We did everything to avoid penalties. After the goal we got a bit too deep and passed it backwards, so that changed the game.

If this had been a Serie A game, it would’ve been decided by an incident. As it’s the Super Cup, it was decided on penalties.

We’ve had many matches this season and fatigue can cause problems. I was forced into two substitutions, unfortunately.

Milan manager Vincenzo Montella told Rai Sport (h/t Football Italia) the result was the correct one:

It’s a nice feeling to win. The lads have to see this as a good starting point for the future, as we played on a par with a great side like Juventus.

I am very happy for President Silvio Berlusconi, as we know how much he cared about this trophy and we dedicate it to him.

In the first 20 minutes we weren’t our usual selves, but we shrugged off the tension and slowly improved as the game wore on. We created many chances and deserved to win in 90 minutes.

Juventus and Milan will now enjoy their winter break, as Serie A resumes action on January 7.

Giacomo Bonaventura had special dedications for the Italian Super Cup and joked he scored “a striker-style goal” as Milan beat Juventus.

The game ended 1-1 in Doha after 90 minutes with his header wiping out the Giorgio Chiellini opener, then the Rossoneri triumphed in a penalty shoot-out.

“I am happy, because in recent years we’ve really suffered and the results didn’t come, but this joy repays us for all those years of hard work,” Bonaventura told Rai Sport.

“It was a striker-style goal, wasn’t it? I’m happy to have scored past Gigi Buffon, which is almost impossible! We had many lads here who were really hungry for success and we sacrificed ourselves for the team.

“We knew Juve were strong and could pin us back, which they did in the first half, but we also proved that we’ve got quality and this game gives us more confidence and self-belief that we can compete with sides like Juve.

“It was a great performance all round. Vincenzo Montella has done a good job since arriving, but we must also thank Sinisa Mihajlovic, as he took us to the Coppa Italia Final last season and is a great boss. We also thank Cristian Brocchi, who gave us a hand at the end.

“If we are here, it is thanks to everyone’s hard work and we leave nobody out. Now we enjoy this moment and hope to build for the future.”

AC Milan defeat Juventus on

penalties to win Italian Super Cup

Dec 23, 2016

Mario Pasalic scored the winning penalty as AC Milan lifted the Supercoppa Italiana for the first time in five years with a 4-3 shootout victory over holders Juventus in Doha.

The Chelsea loanee kept his nerve to find the top left corner with Milan's fifth spot-kick after their 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had denied Paulo Dybala.

Giorgio Chiellini volleyed Juve into an 18th-minute lead at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium but Giacomo Bonaventura headed Milan level seven minutes before the break to leave the game level at 1-1 after extra-time.

The result means Milan have now equalled the Turin club's record of seven super cup wins.

It was the ninth time the competition had been played outside of Italy and Massimiliano Allegri's Juve were strong favourites ahead of the clash.

The Serie A champions -- and current leaders -- began brightly and Croatia international striker Mario Mandzukic was the first to threaten when his half-volley was tipped around the left upright by Donnarumma.

Stefano Sturaro should have opened the scoring in the 17th minute but, after being played in by Gonzalo Higuain, the midfielder's effort lacked power and was repelled by the Milan keeper before the ball was scrambled behind by Ignazio Abate.

Juve did not have to wait long for another opportunity, though, and from the resultant corner Chiellini powerfully connected with Miralem Pjanic's delivery to claim his first goal since a brace against Sampdoria in October.

Milan, who qualified for the final as runners-up to Juve in last season's Coppa Italia, had struggled up until that point but they gradually grew into the game as their opponents failed to build on the early breakthrough.

Slovakian midfielder Juraj Kucka had a header comfortably saved by Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon nine minutes prior to the interval, before parity was restored two minutes later.

Creative midfielder Suso found space on the right to curl in a dangerous left-footed cross and Bonaventura timed his run perfectly to flick the ball past Buffon and into the far corner.

The equaliser seemed to increase the confidence of the Rossoneri and 12 minutes after the restart they almost turned the game around.

Spaniard Suso was once again the provider as his ball from the right was headed towards goal by defender Alessio Romagnoli before cannoning back off Buffon's crossbar.

Sami Khedira then forced Donnarumma into a fine save at the other end, before Bianconeri substitute Dybala, a 67th-minute replacement for Pjanic, flashed a shot just off target.

Milan, who last lifted the trophy in 2011 when Allegri was their manager, came close to snatching a late winner in normal time when another Suso delivery was nodded down into the ground by Carlos Bacca before being beaten away by Buffon on the line.

Colombian striker Bacca then wasted a fantastic opportunity two minutes into extra-time as he miscontrolled the ball with the goal gaping after Buffon had saved the initial attempt.

Juve full-back Patrice Evra thought he had claimed the winner in the 111th minute but he was correctly flagged offside, before Dybala blazed over from eight yards to leave the game requiring penalties.

Gianluca Lapadula missed Milan's first kick but, after Mandzukic hit the bar and Dybala saw his effort saved, substitute Pasalic stepped up to give Vincenzo Montella's men victory.
