Juventus beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 at home to record their first Champions League win in the Juventus Stadium this season, and in the process seal top spot in Group H. After the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri spoke about the heavily-modified squad he had to play with.

“I changed the system because we needed an extra man in the middle of the park, as we were a little slow.

“The second half was a little better and Dinamo opened up after the first goal, then dropped off physically and it became easier for us.

“This season we hadn’t yet won a Champions League game on home turf, so this result is certainly positive.

“Using Miralem Pjanic as a trequartista is an option that we can use during a game as well as from the start. He did well there on Sunday, less so today because there were fewer spaces, but he still had some good moves.

“Juan Cuadrado struggled tonight. The diamond midfield allows us to have more players in the middle, but the first half system was also one that allowed us to win 12 games in Serie A. It’s all about giving the opponent few reference points.”

As group winners, Juventus will now face one of Paris St. Germain, Benfica, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid or FC Porto with the draw at 12 pm CET (6 am EST, 3 am PST) on Monday 12 December.

Allegri was bullish about the Bianconeri’s next opponents.

“It all depends on the ball that gets pulled out from the pot. In any case, sooner or later we’re going to have to face them all.”

When asked if he would be bolstering his midfield in the upcoming January transfer window, the manager replied -

“We are not lacking anything and should make the most of our players. We just need to improve in terms of our team football and organisation.”

Juventus manager Max Allegri alert

to knockout round challenges

Massimiliano Allegri has played down claims his side have an easy road into the Champions League's later stage after finishing Group H leaders on Wednesday.

Goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Daniele Rugani lifted the defending Italian champions over over Dinamo Zagreb in the two teams' final group game ahead of Monday's UCL draw for the last-16 matchups.

While Dinamo did not qualify for the knockout stage, Juventus, as group winners, look to be in strong position to progress into the later rounds. However, Allegri cautioned against such ideas.

"It all depends on the ball that gets pulled out from the pot. In any case, sooner or later we're going to have to face them all," Allegri told Mediaset Premium.

With Juve creating very little heading into the break, Allegri hailed a tactical switch as the turning point for his side in the match.

"I changed system because we needed an extra man in the middle of the park, as we were a little slow.

Paulo Dybala makes his Juve return,

Kwadwo Asamoah off the pace

Dec 8, 2016

A lacklustre performance sprinkled with a few moments of inspiration was enough for Juventus to seal a 2-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb and top their Champions League group.

The Croatians opted to play their youngsters, hoping that determination would make the difference. However, while many looked promising, it's clear the UCL is a level too high for a side that lost all six of their group games, scoring no goals and conceding 15.

Juventus played with little desire and urgency, struggling to go up a gear. Slow in rotating the ball, their first goal opened the game up a little and the second simply sealed what transpired to be one of the easiest games of the season.

Positives

There is no greater positive than having Paulo Dybala back from injury. The forward was only introduced in the 80th minute yet in those 10 minutes he produced three shots and caused havoc going forward with his vision, intelligence and desire. With Mario Mandzukic in tremendous form, giving his all in every area of the pitch, Juve's dream of offensive excellence may soon become a reality.

Negatives

While Juan Cuadrado's decision making and Mario Lemina's inefficiency caused frustration, Juventus need both players available. The same can no longer be said of Kwadwo Asamoah who is struggling to make an impact at this level. Looking tired, befuddled and easily outsmarted, it might be time for the loyal servant to seek pastures new.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- With so many absences, Max Allegri did what he could to ensure solidity. However, he must try to get Juventus to learn how to go up a gear when need be rather than settle on slow rotations of the ball, waiting for chances to happen.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Norberto Neto, 6 -- Safe pair of hands at the back. Allowed to simply watch the game as the opponent rarely attacked.

WB Kwadwo Asamoah, 5 -- Delivered some key passes, struggled with crosses. He's not at the right level anymore. Looked lost on too many occasions.

DF Mehdi Benatia, 6 -- Barely needed to defend but the Benatia was calm, elegant and concentrated.

DF Daniele Rugani, 7 -- Scored another headed goal, the youngster plays with composure, intelligence and most importantly, grit. Deserved to be entrusted with the Leonardo Bonucci role.

DF Patrice Evra, 6 -- Evra provided solidity but rarely stands out. Better at defending than going forward.

WB Juan Cuadrado, 6 -- His pace has the power to make the difference, while his dribbling can be a delight to watch. The winger, however, must read the game better, releasing the ball quicker and looking for better positioned teammates.

MF Mario Lemina 6 -- In the Sami Khedira role, Lemina can make timely runs into the box and demonstrate his athleticism and strength. Played very well, if only he was better at scoring.

MF Claudio Marchisio, 6 -- Delivered good passes, ensured defensive solidity and set the tone of the game. He is the man who provides the balance.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 6 -- Missed a great chance to score the opening goal. Benefitting from being deployed in the trequartista role, he offered vertical solutions and positioned himself well to cause danger but failed to shine in the same way he managed against Atalanta.

FW Gonzalo Higuain, 6 -- It was obvious that Higuain was low on confidence. He usually relies on his instincts to score but he was second guessing himself and hesitating on the ball. His goal finally came and it was beautiful, hopefully one that will help the striker recover his lethality in front of goal.

FW Mario Mandzukic, 7 -- In extraordinary form, the Croatian defended brilliantly and delivered a great cross that Pjanic should have converted. His movement much improved, he worked relentlessly for the sake of the team and the win.

Paulo Dybala
Juventus fans will be pleased to see Dybala back on the pitch.

Substitutes

MF Stefano Sturaro, N/A -- Arrived when the win was already sealed. Managed the basics but wasn't required to do much more.

FW Paulo Dybala, N/A -- Not on for long yet immediately came close to scoring, creating chances and causing havoc. Three shots in 10 minutes -- he had been missed.

MF Hernanes, N/A -- Only offered a few minutes.

Juventus Top UCL Group, but Paulo Dybala

Return Is Their Biggest Boost

Dec 8, 2016

Despite being held scoreless in the first half, Juventus will have enjoyed their final Champions League outing of the calendar year. Running out 2-0 winners at home against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday, the Bianconeri clinched top spot in Group H ahead of Sevilla and Olympique Lyonnais.

While the results elsewhere mean they could still be handed a tough opponent in the last 16, this 2-0 win was also hugely beneficial in other ways.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri went into this clash without his trio of star defenders, with the BBC unit of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini all unable to play from the outset.

In addition, right-back Dani Alves remains sidelined. The Juve boss also opted to rest goalkeeper Gigi Buffon and left-back Alex Sandro, yet his side still kept a clean sheet. That should be a huge boost to the team’s collective confidence, as should the performances of some other key figures further up the pitch.

14 - Juventus have collected 14 points in a Champions League group for the first time since 2005/06. Quality.

Mario Mandzukic continued the excellent form he showed in the win over Atalanta, a performance discussed at length in this previous post. The Croatia international worked tirelessly, as always, but his quality and determination also led to the creation of a number of openings for those around him.

His partnership with Gonzalo Higuain has been difficult to watch at times, but they have finally begun to click, and it was the former Napoliman who broke the deadlock at Juventus Stadium after 52 minutes.

Mario Lemina—given a rare start as Sami Khedira was also rested—tried to fight his way through a crowd of Dinamo defenders before the ball fell to Higuain just inside the penalty area.

Higuain breaks the deadlock! Juve lead 1-0!!

He made no mistake, rifling an unstoppable shot beyond goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. The strike ended a seven-game drought in all competitions for Higuain, who was clearly delighted to be back on the scoresheet.

Shortly after the final whistle, the Argentinian said, per Juve’s official website:

All strikers want to score goals, so of course I'm happy to get one tonight.

When you're not sticking them away you need to help the team in other ways and that's what I tried to do in this spell when we've been without Paulo Dybala. I've moved a bit further away from the area I was used to playing in.

Daniel Rugani added a second goal for the Bianconeri just over 20 minutes later. The defender headed home from a Miralem Pjanic corner, just as he did in the aforementioned victory over Atalanta, sealing all three points.

QuBzNIHyuKQbOGhy.jpg

That goal punctuated another fine display from the 22-year-old, who was holding together Allegri’s makeshift back line. According to WhoScored.com, he ended the match with one interception and one clearance, but he also kept the ball moving with some intelligent distribution.

He attempted 95 passes and connected with 89.5 per cent of them, a huge leap for a player who has made an average of just 52.4 passes per game in Serie A this term and a further indicator of Rugani’s growing maturity.

While the fact he, Medhi Benatia and Patrice Evra were able to shut out their opponents on this occasion was important, the biggest bonus for the home side arguably came via a substitution with just 10 minutes remaining.

The anticipation of the crowd was palpable as Pjanic made his way off the pitch, and it reached a crescendo as Paulo Dybala replaced him. The 23-year-old had been out of action since October 22, suffering a thigh injury as he attempted an audacious long-range shot against AC Milan.

Allegri has been cautious in nursing him back to fitness, omitting him from the squad against Atalanta to ensure Dybala was available for Juve’s tough upcoming fixtures, which the coach was already focusing on in his post-match interviews.

"We won't be thinking about our next Champions League matches or even our last-16 opponents," Allegri told reporters at his press conference. "Now it's time for us to focus on the league and then the Super Cup."

Max Allegri knows what lies ahead.

In their three games before the winter break, Juve will face a derby clash with neighbours Torino, a tough encounter at home against AS Roma and then a trip to Qatar for the Supercoppa Italiana meeting with AC Milan.

With that in mind, Dybala's return could not have come at a better time. The young Argentina international has become a vital component in this Juventus side, a player they simply cannot afford to be without.

Blessed with wonderful technique, a fierce, fiery determination that constantly drives him forward and a sublime left foot, Dybala’s importance cannot be understated. Mandzukic and Higuain have—like the team around them—struggled without the former Palermo man’s creativity, with the attack often becoming stale.

Paulo Dybala v DZG: 3 shots, 1/1 take-ons, 13/15 passes, 1 tackle, 2 ball recoveries IN 10 MINUTES! (via @StatsZone) #BentornatoPaulino ⚪️⚫️

According to WhoScored.com, only Pjanic (3.1) and Alex Sandro (2.3) create more clear goalscoring opportunities per game than Dybala’s average (2), and he quickly set about making up for lost time.

Despite his limited playing time, the FourFourTwo Stats Zone graphic above shows that Dybala managed three shots, testing the goalkeeper with one effort while another was deflected narrowly over the bar.

His passing was as sharp and incisive as usual, and he also beat the one defender he attempted to dribble past and recovered the ball twice. It was a short but telling run-out, one the man himself was clearly glad to have made as he looks to help Juventus in the coming weeks.

"I couldn't wait to get back out there," he explained, per Juve's official website. "I felt ready for it, as I've been putting a lot of intensity into my training. I might not have 90 minutes in me yet, but I'm match fit. I'd felt no issues in the last few days, and I felt none out there today, either."

His improvement since joining the club in the summer of 2015 is only surpassed by the boost his presence always appears to give the team, with Allegri in little doubt as to just how good his star striker can become.

"Dybala is an extraordinary player, and he can also get better," the coach told reporters in England back in August, per FourFourTwo. "He will become one of the world's top three players."

The Dybala-Higuain partnership has yet to fully click.

That optimism was well-placed after a debut campaign in Turin that saw Dybala net 23 goals in all competitions. He has already bagged four this term. He still needs to work on his understanding with Higuain, and Juve need to be more cutthroat in attack overall, but the prospect of the Argentinian duo on form in the same team is a frightening one for upcoming opponents.

The younger man is back in action and ready to contribute, as he proved against Dinamo Zagreb. You have been warned.

Dec 8, 2016

For a change, Juventus concluded the Champions League group stage with the knowledge that they controlled their own fate. Victory at home against a poor Dinamo Zagreb side who have failed to register a single point or goal scored in the group stages so far, and Juventus win Group H. Ez boiz. Considering the caliber of teams who have concluded the group stages this year as second seed, it might not make much of a difference, but as our in house financial adviser Fefu would tell you, another victory and topping the group is certainly good for our finances. And at least we did our utmost to finish the phase as top seeds, and we get a nightmare Round of 16 draw now, it comes down to luck, and not a screw up like last season.

The game started in a relatively open fashion, as Dinamo were keen to crowd out the midfield. However, a quick forward pass to Gonzalo Higuain ended up with him releasing Miralem Pjanic in the space between the midfield and defense, but the Bosnian playmaker could only pull his shot well wife of the post.

The roles were reversed a few minutes later, when a beautiful long ball from captain for the night, Claudio Marchisio, found Mario Mandzukic beyond the defense. His first time pass back to Pjanic was lobbed into the rushing advance of Higuain, who took a touch that might have ended up being one touch too many, as the onrushing keeper Dominik Livakovic managed to reduce the angle and block his shot.

The majority of the rest of the first half failed to live up to the action of the first five minutes. The game settled into a bit of a lull, with Juve trying to push forward, but without really moving the ball around quickly enough to cause problems to a Zagreb team keen to defend deep and hopefully get lucky on the counter attack.

The best chance of the half came on the 32-minute mark, as some nice skill by Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado down the right, found Mandzukic in space in an advanced position on the right flank. He dummied his man before firing in a pinpoint cross onto Pjanic’s head, but the Bosnian’s free header was straight at the keeper.

A wild shot from Mario Lemina, and a few shots on target from Pjanic from a free kick, and Mandzukic, concluded what was a half played at somewhat a pedestrian speed.

The second half started off where the first concluded, with Juventus maintaining a lot of sterile possession in the middle of the pitch, and struggling to bring either winger into the game or get beyond a resolute Zagreb defense.

Finally, some neat work by Lemina helped Juventus take the lead. After getting played in in space in the middle of the pitch by Cuadrado, the Gabonese midfielder wonderfully controlled possession of the ball despite being crowded out by three or four determined players as he entered the box. Eventually the scramble gave Higuain the half a yard of space he needed to fire in a vicious shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. You could see the relief on the Argentine’s face as he celebrated what was his fist goal in a month.

Once again the game settled into a bit of a lull, as Zagreb rarely threatened and Juve were keen just to hold onto the ball. Finally around the 72-minute mark, a delicious Marchisio through ball released Cuadrado down the right flank. His cutback found Lemina with a bit of space in the box, but he was quickly charged down, and his shot was deflected for a corner.

From the resultant set piece, Pjanic fired in a wonderful ball that defender Daniele Rugani attacked with deadly intent, and gave Juventus a comfortable two goal cushion with a bullet header, which was almost an instant replay of the goal he scored a few days prior at the J-stadium against Atalanta.

To the crowd’s delight, La Joya Paulo Dybala came on for Pjanic, in what was his first appearance since the end of October. The diminutive Argentine forward looked eager to make up for lost time, and when on what was almost a one man crusade to get a third goal. Time and time again the team sought him out on the right flank, and he cut in and bamboozled a defender or two... or three, before firing in a multitude of shots with his left foot that were either well saved by the keeper, blocked by a defender for a corner, or narrowly wide of the goal. It was a fun cameo, and it was a delight to see Dybala running at defenders with the ball again.

The game fizzled out from there, and Juventus did more than enough to take the spoils and end the group stage as top of Group H.

TALKIN’ TACTICS

Much to what I can suppose would be shock to my friend Linez, Max Allegri lined the team up in a new 3-4-1-2 system, abandoning his central midfield trio for the first time since he became Coach. The system had Marchisio and Lemina manning the center of the pitch, thereby giving Pjanic the freedom to free roam in the trequartista position he excelled in over the weekend. In what was another surprise, despite announcing that Medhi Benatia was the leading candidate to take up Leonardo Bonucci’s position as the central defender in a back three, it was Rugani who occupied that role, with Benatia and Evra playing on either side of him.

The average positions of the players - giving an idea of the freedom on the ball afforded to us by a Zagreb team keen on defending deep.
fourfourtwo.com

However, it was clear from the first half that the team had yet to get used to this tactical setup. That doesn’t mean I think it was a poor first half, just that it looked a little disjointed, particularly in the middle. Marchisio held his usual position shielding the defense, with Lemina playing next to him. However, Zagreb defended so deep throughout the match, that the Gabonese had freedom to break forward and make runs late into the box. Despite having the lion’s share of possession, the team struggled to breakdown the Zagreb bus. In particular, we struggled to bring the wingers, Cuadrado and Asamoah, into the game. In the former’s case, it wasn’t for lack of effort. The team just opted to utilize Pjanic in his free-roaming role, and Marchisio who was under next to no pressure when on the ball, to play predominantly through the center. Asamoah, however, endured a torrid evening. He looked lost when in possession of the ball, and even when he had it, he didn’t have a lot of success in trying to add some width down the left flank.

Credit to Max for noticing these minute details, and acting on them. In the second half, the team came out in what resembled a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Patrice Evra and Cuadrado as fullbacks, and Asamoah slotting into the LCM position. However, correctly predicting that Zagreb were more interested in not losing than scoring, the full backs ended up playing more as wing backs, or maybe even wingers, meaning that for the bulk of the half, Rugani and Benatia were the only two players still in our half. And even the two of them were fearless in stepping up into midfield and carrying the ball forward.

Pjanic’s performance suggests that Allegri has finally found his best position, with the defensive work rate provided by the likes of Sturaro or Lemina giving him a lot more freedom to support the attack and create from the space within the midfield and defense. Our gameplay also should become that much more fluid once Dybala returns to the fold fully fit. The presence of someone like Dybala over the likes of Mandzukic/Higuain should also help to speed up the passing through the middle, an issue the team suffered from today. However, from this game, my main conclusion would be that setting the team up to play both with wingers, and a trequartista in Pjanic, might be counter productive, as the team really did struggle to bring the wingers into the game. The bulk of the passing and movements were through the center, and this certainly did utilize the intelligence and passing range of Pjanic and Marchisio wonderfully, who regularly sought out the runs of Mandzukic and Higuain, and late runs of the likes of Lemina, beyond the last man.

PLAYER RATINGS

Neto: 6.5

On his Champions League debut, the Brazilian couldn’t have asked for an easier outing. Had absolutely nothing to do all night.

Benatia: 7.5

With Andrea Barzagli at the twilight of his career, and Giorgio Chiellini struggling with his fitness, its a blessing to have the Moroccan. I’ve been quite impressed with his reading of the game, aerial prowess and passing. He brought the ball out from the back very confidently, and enjoyed a game-high five interceptions.

Rugani: 8

Another commanding outing from the young Italian, who pleasantly surprised me with his passing in this game. I think back to the solid defender who was extremely nervous on the ball when he first broke into the team last year, and serious credit must be given to the lad for his hard work, for the improvements are startling. Commanded our third of the pitch with his aerial prowess and reading of the game, giving the Zagreb attack next to no sniffs at goal at all. Completed 95 passes with a 90 percent accuracy (second only to Benatia), and scored his third goal of the season with another bullet header from a set piece, making a serious claim to be our biggest set piece threat.

Rugani’s 98 touches of the ball, showing he wasn’t afraid to step forward and ask for the ball in midfield.
whoscored.com

Evra: 6.5

Comfortable evening for Uncle Pat, who had nothing to do defensively, and played as almost an out and out winger for the majority of the match. That said, his offensive output has suffered this year, and despite trying very, very hard, he is struggling to influence the game in the final third, just as his squad rival Alex Sandro’s offensive output is thriving.

Cuadrado: 7

Another very solid outing from the Columbian wideman, who is certainly striking a wonderful balance between his flair play and skills and his improved chemistry with his teammates. Struggled to get into the game through no fault of his own, as the bulk of the play was through the center. Yet, every time he got any space in the final third, he managed to look threatening. Swung in some lovely crosses, and teed up his teammates often.

Lemina: 8

I was personally very impressed with Lemina. Another player with a lot to prove, he is certainly making a case for himself to get more game time as a box-to-box midfielder, which is good for us as it provides Allegri with more chances to rest Khedira. Two tackles and clearances each, four interceptions, the fourth-highest number of passes completed in the squad (after Benatia, Rugani and Marchisio) at an astounding 95 percent accuracy back this claim up. He wasn’t afraid to drive forward, and his dribbling and strength on the ball offer something unique when compared to our other midfielders, something we lack since Pogba’s departure. Also seems to have been reading BWRAO lately, as despite not always meeting the mark, he wasn’t afraid to take some risks and try to slice the defense open for those ahead of him.

Marchisio: 7.5

Another solid outing for our Little Prince, as he continues his quest towards full fitness and match sharpness. Shielded the defense wonderfully throughout, showcased the full range of his wonderful passing, including a delightful ball over the top for Mandzukic in the opening five minutes, and went about his business with composure and minimal hustle. Our midfield looks so much more balanced and stable with him playing.

Asamoah: 5.5

It was a struggle for the Ghanaian all night, as he struggled mightily to influence the game at all. Despite playing in his old position, he looked lost on the pitch, and clueless as to what to do with the ball. As a wing back, he struggles to offer width. As an LCM, he struggles to provide the dynamism needed of a box-to-box midfielder. I don’t know how much of a future he has with this squad.

Pjanic: 7.5

Another very encouraging display from the Bosnian, who for the first time this season, is starting to look unshackled and not restrained. All he was missing was that killer final touch needed in the final third, but full marks for trying, as he was relentless in roaming all over the pitch and seeking the ball out, and trying to get every around him involved. Still managed to rack up another assist from a set piece. Very excited to see him with Dybala now!

Higuain: 7

It was a decent game from the Argentinian, who worked hard all night. The goals were missing for the past month, but it was fantastic to see the big money star of the squad so willing to sacrifice himself for the team. Got the goal he deserved with a fantastic first time finish. Didn’t get too much space on either side of that however, as the defense tried to double team him all night. Should have done better on his chance in the first half.

Mandzukic: 7

Another stunning display of work rate from the tireless Croat Machine, who seems to be fighting Chiellini’s legacy tooth and nail for the title of “Most grinta in the squad.” Was everywhere once again, as evident from his heatmap below. Didn’t get many chances in front of goal, but did well to bring others into the game, and setup Pjanic for what should have been a goal in the first half. How he isn’t fatigued to hell yet is just the most amazing mystery.

Mario Mandzukic’s heatmap
 whoscored.com

Sturaro: 6.5

The game was all but done when he came into the fold. Still added some hustle to proceedings.

Dybala: 7

He looks like a caged tiger just let loose. His hunger is heartening to see. Looked fired up for his 10 or so minutes on the pitch. Hope to see him from the start soon.

Hernanes: N/A

Allegri: 7.5

New experimental midfield system indicating a willingness to adapt? Check. Playing good players in their best positions? Check. Adjusted his tactics based on the flow of the game? Check. Clean sheet with minimal chances afforded? Check. Energy conserving performance? Check. Top of the Champions Lague group? Check.

With that, we conclude the first part of our European adventure this season. What joy or horrors await us now? Time and fate will tell. Will Juventus get a favourable draw? Will Juventus get a nightmare draw and crash out again? Will Juventus get the hardest draw ever, but fight their way to the elusive Big ears title? Find out next time, on DRAGON BALL Z.

This is Kaushik, signing out.

Gianluca Rocchi has been announced as the referee for the Derby della Mole between Torino and Juventus.

Both sides won the last time they were refereed by the official, Toro thrashing Bologna 5-1 in August and Juve beating Napoli on October 29.

Rocchi caused controversy in October 2014, however, awarding the Bianconeri two penalties against Roma and sending their Coach Rudi Garcia to the stands.

Kostas Manolas and Alvaro Morata also saw red, while the Giallorossi were awarded a penalty too.

Elsewhere, Paolo Mazzoleni will officiate as Milan travel to Roma, while Paolo Valeri is entrusted with Inter-Genoa.

Serie A Week 16 referees:

Atalanta-Udinese - Fabio Maresca
Bologna-Empoli - Marco Guida
Cagliari-Napoli - Gianpaolo Calvarese

Fiorentina-Sassuolo - Michael Fabbri
Inter-Genoa - Paolo Valeri
Palermo-Chievo - Paolo Tagliavento

Derby della Mole, Milan vs. Roma

headline massive round in Serie A

Dec 8, 2016

When the definitive book of derbies is penned in Italy, Torino manager Sinisa Mihajlovic would be a natural choice to write the preface. The Serb has been involved in pretty much all the ones that matter in Serie A either as a player or a coach, from the Derby della   Capitale and the Madonnina to the Lanterna.  On Sunday, he can add the Derby della Mole (Juventus vs. Torino) to that list. As can keeper Joe Hart, who will find some historical similarities between this rivalry and the one he experienced in Manchester.

It promises to be the most exciting in years. Torino have made their most prolific start to a season since 1947 and the days of the Grande Torino. Striker Andrea Belotti has drawn comparisons with Christian Vieri and, as a reward for his exploits in front of goal this year, signed at the weekend a contract extension until 2021, including a buyout clause for non-Italian clubs worth €100m, a figure even greater than the one Juventus paid Napoli for Gonzalo Higuain in the summer.

Higuain finally ended his goal drought against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday night and joined Belotti in double figures for the season. El Pipita had gone almost seven hours of game time without finding the net, which he put down to the transition he is undergoing at Juve where, lest we forget, he is adjusting to a new manager, a different system to the one he's used to, and new teammates who he is still getting to know.   Further, Paulo Dybala's absence over the last six weeks has made it necessary for Higuain to cover a role that isn't his own: coming short to link the midfield with the attack.

Dybala is now back and Juventus manager Max Allegri has encouraged talk of fielding all his strikers up front together. Mario Mandzukic is undroppable at the moment and has drawn as many plaudits for the defensive shift he puts in for the team as he has for his goals. All three, though, will have to embrace his tireless work ethic if it is to work.

JUVENTUS STADIUM, TURIN, ITALY - 2015/12/16: Andrea Belotti (left) and Claudio Marchisio (right) fight for the ball during the Italy Cup match between Juventus FC and Torino FC. Juventus FC wins 4-0 over Torino FC.
Last season, Andrea Belotti and Torino were pushed around by Juventus but Torino's form hints this time could be different.

Right now it seems too soon and too much of a risk against Torino, particularly with the threat posed by Adem Ljajic, Iago Falque and Belotti and without two-thirds of the BBC, although Daniele Rugani's progression in Juventus colours comes as great reassurance. It's a bonus that he's a threat from set pieces too. Rugani has scored in back-to-back games, both from a couple of Miralem Pjanic corners, and this could be something to look out for on Sunday as it just so happens that six of the 19 goals Torino have conceded have come from these situations.

If that's Torino's weakness, going on the road after European commitments is Juventus'.   OK, the Stadio Grande Torino is only down the road, but all of the champions' defeats (three) this season have directly followed appearances in the Champions League. Torino, incidentally, are unbeaten at home.

Two sides that hope the Granata repeat what they did 18 months ago, when they beat Juventus for the first time in two decades, are Roma and AC Milan. Level on points in second place, they meet at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday night in a game billed as a playoff to decide who is Juventus' No.1 contender. There have been cries of injustice in Rome after retrospective action was taken to ban Kevin Strootman for two matches for simulation in the Rome derby. He'll miss the Milan game and the trip to Juventus a week later.

Suspicions have inevitably been aroused and aspersions cast. Roma have launched an appeal and hope to get a hearing on Friday. In the meantime, the controversy can't be allowed to become a distraction. The win against Lazio was another step in the right direction for Roma. They did it without Alessandro Florenzi, Leandro Paredes and Mohamed Salah, and without playing well for an hour. Perhaps most importantly of all, though, Roma did what their detractors say they don't do enough; they kept their heads and came through a difficult game.   Roma are aware you can't always be pretty. Against Lazio they found beauty in winning ugly.

This is definitely one of the secrets to Milan's season, as well. They are a most un-Vincenzo Montella-like side. Compared with his Spanish style Fiorentina, his Milan are more stereotypically Italian. They average less possession, attempt fewer passes and play an effective counterattacking game. Mature beyond their years -- Milan have the youngest average age in Serie A -- they play rope-a-dope with opponents, letting teams wear themselves out in the first half before catching them with a sucker punch in the second. People say the young have no fear and there surely is an element of that. Milan aren't fazed by anything. Going behind or getting pegged back doesn't seem to bother them as it did in recent years. They just push on and get the job done.

It seems the kids can't believe their own luck and are seizing this opportunity with both hands. That also goes for players like Suso and Gianluca Lapadula. One was written off by Liverpool and has a point to prove. The other has spent all his career in the lower divisions and plays every game with Milan as if it were his last. What he lacks in natural talent he makes up for in blood, sweat and tears. Consider Lapadula the new Salvatore Schillaci, Dario Hubner and Igor Protti -- strikers who had to wait a long, long time to get their chance in Serie A and then took it by storm. Mix it all together and what you get is a Milan team with an incredible spirit about it.

Will it be enough against a Roma team that has more quality? We shall see.   As with Higuain and Belotti in the Derby della Mole, all eyes Monday night will be on the strikers, Lapadula and current co-Capocannoniere Edin Dzeko.

A   massive round in the title race awaits.

Jarni: 'Everyone fears Juve'

  http://www.football-italia.net/95441/jarni-everyone-fears-juve

Dec 9, 2016

Former Juventus and Real Madrid wingback Robert Jarni thinks that all teams in the Champions League will fear the Old Lady.

After securing qualification to the knockout stages of the competition, Juventus will take on Torino in the Turin derby on Sunday, but what chance will the Granata have?

"Juventus are too strong at the moment, the Croation told TuttoJuve. "This is despite the fact that Torino are a good team so there's not a lot to talk about.

"The Bianconeri are 100% favourites, the team is playing well and everything will depend on how the players perform on the pitch.

"Coach [Max] Allegri has a lot experience in these kind of games, I do not think the Granata will surprise us. But in football, never say never.

"The Scudetto? If Juve maintain this concentration, I believe they will the title once again."

After it was tested in the final minutes of the match against Dinamo Zagreb, can a trident of Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic work for the Bianconeri?

"It 's quite difficult to talk about this because I do not know the situation, you don't know what the Coach is thinking.

"Juve faced a Croatian team that has many problems and it was an easy match. It went pretty well on Tuesday, but we must evaluate them against a stronger team.

"The teams in the Champions League are all very strong, but all will have a hard time against this Juve squad. The Juventus players have been together for many years, and now very strong players like Higuain have come in and the Coach is keeping a good balance.

"You can safely say that no one has pleasure in facing a team like Juve. They are very strong defensively and have grown a lot offensively in recent years. I hope Juventus can get as far as possible.I have wonderful memories at Juve, we had a great team."

Jarni played at Juventus in the 1994-95 season and was at Real Madrid between 1998 and 1999. But who was his strongest teammate?

"I played with many champions, it's pretty hard to tell who was the strongest. If I have to name some I would say [Roberto] Baggio at Juventus, [Clarence] Seedorf, Redondo and Raul in Real Madrid.

"I can’t say just one, because they were all very strong players in their own way."

Hart: Incredible Toro!

  http://www.football-italia.net/95446/hart-incredible-toro

Dec 9, 2016

Joe Hart has hailed his time with Torino as “an incredible experience” and is fired up for this weekend’s Derby della Mole against Juventus.

Hart has been a Serie A ever-present for Toro since his surprise arrival from Manchester City on transfer-deadline day back in August, and the goalkeeper admits he has learned to broaden his scope of football beyond the Premier League.

“I’m glad to have joined Torino,” he told Omnisport.

“It’s all new for me here, but I’m living an incredible experience and I’ve met some great people.

“You learn that football doesn’t revolve around what happens in England, here there’s interest, passion, love. I’m very happy here because this experience is making me better.”

Hart then looked towards the Turin derby on Sunday and what the future had in store, given he is still owned by City.

“Next up is the derby. There aren’t big differences with Manchester in the way derbies are experienced,” he added.

“It’s already been talked about for several weeks. Juve are a tough team, solid at the back and always manage to do damage going forward.

“It won’t be enough to play well, we’ll have to score in order to win.

“My future? I don’t know yet. Obviously I’m still a Manchester City player, but nothing will be resolved before the summer.”

Juventus heads all the way to Turin to take on Torino in the first Derby della Mole of the season on Sunday. Juventus are coming off two very important wins over Atalanta and Dinamo Zagreb, and will be looking to keep up this run of good form.

Torino enter the derby sitting in seventh place in the league standings, and are coming off a 2-0 loss to ninth-place Sampdoria. Their offense has been their best asset thus far, sitting third in goals scored with 31 (Juventus has 32), thanks large in part to striker Andrea Belotti, who has 10 of those goals.

After this game, Juve’s next fixture will be next Saturday against Roma.

All things considered, who would you like to see start on Sunday? Vote below! The results will be posted, as well as a few different takes on the lineup, including my own.

This round’s survey question will be based on the Champions League draw preferences, as the Round of 16 draw is coming up on Monday at 12 noon CET. I’d like to know who you think would be the toughest opponent to draw, and the easiest opponent to draw.

Remember, this is not what you expect the lineup to be, this is what you would do or what you would like to see.

Alex Sandro reveals ‘one wish’

  http://www.football-italia.net/95455/alex-sandro-reveals-‘one-wish’

Dec 9, 2016

Juventus full-back Alex Sandro has revealed his one wish – to play Porto in the Champions League final.

Alex Sandro spent three-and-a-half seasons with Porto between 2011 and 2015 before joining Juve in the summer of 2015, resulting in the Brazilian’s desire to face his former club on the biggest stage of all.

“First and foremost, we’re happy to have finished first in our group,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Regardless of whoever our opponents will be, we’re ready. I’d like Porto a lot. My wish is to meet Porto in the Champions League final.

“Torino? I’m hoping for a clean and beautiful game to watch. This is one of those games in which every player dreams of being the star, giving their best.

“I hope to see a strong Juve, the one I know. We’re all going there to win.”

Raging Toro

After decades in the shadow of their city cousins, the derby might

be time for Torino to make a stand, writes Susy Campanale.

  http://www.football-italia.net/95472/raging-toro

Dec 10, 2016

Torino made it clear this summer that they are no longer content to sit mid-table and churn out Italian talents only to sell them on at a profit. This club is historically one of the most important in Italy and has a large fan-base famously dominating the city of Turin, whereas the majority of Juventus fans reside in other parts of the country. It’s only right that they should be ambitious and the Derby della Mole can be a turning point.

The disparity in success between the two city rivals is clear from looking at the trophy cabinet, at least over the last few decades, but above all is visible in the Turin Derby. The Granata scraped just four draws from 17 competitive encounters with Juventus over a 20-year period. April 1995 to April 2015, the streak of ignominy finally shattered by a 2-1 victory for Giampiero Ventura’s men. It had looked like the usual disappointment when Andrea Pirlo curled in a direct free kick, but after the restart Matteo Darmian and ex-Juve striker Fabio Quagliarella turned it around for a famous success story. The celebrations in the city were akin to a Scudetto, as the curse appeared to be broken.

Of course, the joy was short-lived. Toro went into the next derby looking down the table at their richer cousins for the first time since 1993, and with the scores at 1-1 were pouring forward in search of a victory, keeping Gigi Buffon very busy. This left them open to the counter and a last-gasp Juan Cuadrado counter-attack, the Colombian’s first goal in a Juventus jersey. It was the same old story again – valiant Torino undone by the more clinical Bianconeri and all anyone would remember was the result.

There are many derbies in Italian football, but whereas Milan-Inter and Roma-Lazio are evenly matched, in Turin it’s very much a one-sided affair. Juve fans shrug that this fixture is not one of the most important in a packed calendar, but the Granata supporters feel the season might be salvaged if only they can upset the complacent upstarts who claim to represent the city.

Sinisa Mihajlovic is probably the right man to have on the bench in a situation like this. He has an intense dislike of Juventus thanks to his time at Inter and Fiorentina, their more traditional rivals, and himself has an awful record against them. Miha has beaten the Old Lady only once as a Coach, when Catania earned a shock 2-1 success in Turin in December 2009, along with four draws and six losses.

Adem Ljajic, Leandro Castan and Iago Falque bring their Roma experiences of Juventus tension, while Joe Hart’s Manchester City lost home and away to Max Allegri’s men in the Champions League last term. It’s probably the first truly high-profile match for Hart at Toro, one that all eyes will be on even in England, so as the most experienced player in the squad there’s extra pressure on him.

Andrea Belotti recently signed a contract extension with a €100m release clause, valid only for teams outside of Italy. Many clubs are introducing what’s been nicknamed the ‘anti-Juve clause,’ ensuring the giants cannot replicate their poaching of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli and Miralem Pjanic from Roma. This is a head-to-head between the two most prolific Serie A strikers of 2016 and Belotti is the one looking decidedly more in form of late.

Torino will rarely get a better opportunity to knock down Juventus. An injury crisis has wiped out half the defence, Paulo Dybala might not be fit to start, while Allegri’s constant tinkering is yet to create a truly convincing performance this season. Mihajlovic, on the other hand, has practically a full squad at his disposal and a clear identity in their attacking 4-3-3 brand of football. For the first time in many years, Toro feel like a real team and Juve a bunch of individual talents with little genuine cohesion.

On Sunday afternoon, Toro will have more fans than they’ve ever had before, as the rest of the Serie A community waits with baited breath for the leaders to be toppled, opening up the Scudetto race. Juve have already lost three games this season and there’s every chance of another setback at the Stadio Grande Torino.

Marchisio: 'I'd lose Turin Derby if...'

  http://www.football-italia.net/95474/marchisio-id-lose-turin-derby-if

Dec 10, 2016

Claudio Marchisio described his highs and lows against Torino, but would “lose both derbies if Juventus win the Champions League.”

The Derby della Mole kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“My fondest memory of the derby is the year of the second Scudetto, which was also my first ‘home’ derby. We won 3-0 with my brace,” the midfielder told La Stampa newspaper.

There have been some controversial moments in this fixture too, such as Enzo Maresca’s celebration mocking Torino hero Marco Ferrante’s iconic ‘bull horns’ gesture.

“It’s a personal matter, you celebrate the way you feel fit at that moment. It is different to score when it’s very tight and aggressive or if it ends 4-0.

“I don’t know if I’d have ever done what Maresca did, but as a fan I definitely celebrated. It’s understandable the opposition were annoyed,” concedes Marchisio.

“Toro never give in and if you don’t step on to the field with the right mentality and tough skin, you’re going to get hurt. We might be the favourites in this fixture, but the Granata are really tough.

“In the current squad Iago Falque is showing his talent, Adem Ljajic is inventive and Andrea Belotti is a great striker. I also like Daniele Baselli and Marco Benassi.

“Sinisa Mihajlovic has a similar character to Toro and therefore fits in perfectly at the club. Considering his origins and experience, he knows how to bring the right energy and motivation for these challenges.

“I think Belotti and Giorgio Chiellini will be the decisive men on Sunday.”

Marchisio was offered a hypothetical trade: lose both Turin derbies in one season and win the Champions League.

“OK, I’d do that, but it’s the only trade I’d make. I really hope to see out my career at Juventus. I felt such joy signing the last contract, which for me felt like a pact – continue winning and teach to the youngsters what I was taught before them.”

On Sunday, the Stadio Olimpico in Turin sees the latest instalment of the city's underappreciated derby clash. Known as the Derby della Mole, it is not named after a small mammal with bad eyesight or a benign growth on the skin but instead a major landmark in the former Italian capital city.

La Mole Antonelliana takes its name from the architect who built it, Alessandro Antonelli, and stands tall above its surroundings with a unique spire that dominates the skyline. In the Italian language, the word "mole" literally means "size" and is often used to denote a building of immense proportions.

Having spent recent decades in the shadows of Rome (Lazio and AS Roma), then Inter Milan and AC Milan, this particular encounter was often seen as a symbol of the nation's class divide in the years before the Second World War.

the Mole Antonelliana is the symbol of Turin. inside it there is a beautiful cinema's museum. #turin #torino #juventus

Looking at results of their 234 encounters to date, Juventus will head into this latest meeting seeking their 100th victory, while there have also been 62 draws and 73 wins for Torino. The Granata have, of course, enjoyed their spells of dominance, particularly before the 1949 Superga tragedy that robbed the club of their all-conquering side and sent them into freefall.

Il Toro also went on a five-year unbeaten run against their crosstown rivals during the 1970s, however, but have won just once since 1995, a Matteo Darmian goal handing the Bianconeri a rare defeat in April 2015.

The fixture had become somewhat forgotten outside of the city, but last season saw two huge moments catapult it back to prominence. The first came on October 31, with Juventus languishing in the bottom half of the table and looking in desperate trouble after a woeful start to the campaign.

.@Cuadrado: "The best goal of my career." Here's to more moments like these, Juan! #BentornatoJuan

Yet in the final minute of injury time, Paul Pogba and Alex Sandro would combine to create a scruffy finish from Juan Cuadrado that would spark a spectacular revival. That 2-1 win marked the first of a record-breaking run, with the Bianconeri going undefeated over the rest of 2015/16 and eventually clinching a fifth-consecutive Scudetto.

"It's the most important goal of my career so far," Cuadrado told La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t FourFourTwo). "I've never been able to do something decisive like that at the last minute. It's a really good feeling. ... God helped us a little, because it was tough against a team like Torino, but I think we deserved the result."

Yet if that game at Juventus Stadium put the hosts on course for the title, the reverse fixture would seal another record for the club captain that underlined the role he had played in their march to success.

1 - G. Buffon has not conceded goals for 973 minutes, a new record in the Serie A history. Goalkeeper. #OptaBest11

Heading across town to the Stadio Olimpico in March, Gigi Buffonneeded to go just four minutes unbeaten to break the Serie A record for minutes without conceding. He would do so, although he was eventually beaten by a penalty from Andrea Belotti, but the crowd put their rivalry aside to acknowledge his accomplishment.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Buffon discussed the achievement with Mediaset Premium (h/t Football Italia), explaining he felt unwell that morning but went on to share credit with those playing alongside him:

I am happy to play in this team and the record belongs to Juventus, not me. I was also fortunate to achieve it, because my teammates stopped the opposition from creating chances. They worked their socks off to block every avenue and protect me.

[...]

In all honesty, I didn't think about individual records, as I always saw myself as a team man, but then I realised it's wonderful too. It's a reward because the more you think about the team, the more you are likely to get rewarded as an individual.

He would keep 21 clean sheets in 35 appearances by the end of the season, but the Italy skipper has not been quite so fortunate this term. Buffon has hardly been overworked—ESPN FC statistics show he has made just 19 saves in 13 league appearances so far—but he has just three shutouts to his name in that same period.

The derby is likely to see a much sterner test for the Italy legend, with issues for both teams set to impact his importance. Defenders Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Dani Alves are sidelined with injury, while Giorgio Chiellini has made just one start since the end of October due to ongoing fitness problems of his own.

Furthermore, Torino's tally of 31 goals scored is the third-highest mark in Serie A, ranking behind only AS Roma (35) and Juve (32) thus far. Belotti has been in stunning form, bagging 10 goals in just 13 appearances, with Iago Falque and Adem Ljajic netting seven and five, respectively, in support.

While the trio also have three assists each to their name, midfielders Daniele Baselli and Marco Benassi have scored four times apiece, with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic shaping them into a wonderful free-scoring side.

Andrea Belotti signs new contract with @TorinoFC_1906

Runs until June 2021, contains €100 million buyout clause for non-Italian clubs!

Juventus boast a formidable attack of their own, with Paulo Dybalanow healthy again and ready to feature alongside Gonzalo Higuain in what promises to be a deadly pairing. The importance of the younger Argentina international is simply immeasurable, with this previous post discussing the significance of his return in further detail.

Looking to keep them at bay will be Torino's own impressive goalkeeper, Joe Hart. He made the surprising move to join the Granataon loan from Manchester City this past summer, cast aside by Pep Guardiola who had already brought in Claudio Bravo—deemed a much better passer than the England No. 1—to replace him.

Hart instantly became the first choice for Mihajlovic and has repaid that faith with some impressive displays. Like Buffon, he has three clean sheets in 13 appearances but has been far busier than the Juveicon, with only 10 teams conceding more than Torino's tally of 19 goals before this latest round of fixtures.

Words of support for Joe Hart from a legend of his trade—Gianluigi Buffon

According to Fox Soccer statistics, Hart has made 38 saves from the 53 shots he has faced. Yet despite being beaten 15 times, various outlets including Tuttosport (h/t Football Italia) believe Torino will look to keep the 29-year-old longer than their current season-long loan arrangement with Manchester City.

"The manager isn't here to play around," Hart said in a recent interview with Johnny Phillips of Sky Sports. "He wants the UEFA Europa League spot for us, and that will be a really good achievement as there's only three UEFA Champions League spots in Serie A."

They sit in seventh place, three points and two spots away from a spot in continental competition, with this tricky rivalry standing in their immediate path as they look to climb the table.

"The derby is always a great occasion, and it's the kind of fixture that I prefer, one that gets the fans' hearts racing," Bianconeri midfielder Stefano Sturaro told Sky Italia (h/t Juve's official website). "Even as a supporter, I loved the feeling of excitement before a big game, and now that I'm a player, I feel it more intensely."

Buffon will know that feeling all too well, while Hart—a veteran of clashes for Manchester City against Manchester United—is set for his first taste of it.

Their respective performances are likely to be key in deciding the outcome, but it should be a wonderful showcase of goalkeeping ability from two of Serie A's finest.

Juventus

Juventus needed to bounce back after that ugly loss against Genoa and they delivered in a big way against the red-hot Atalanta. It was a statement game by the Bianconeri, who easily got rid of an opponent who had created fits to the other contenders. It was probably our most dominating performance of the season, considering the level of the competition, once again proving that, even if it might stumble here and there, especially this season where the focus has shifted to Champions League, this is the team to beat in Serie A.

In the Wednesday game against Dinamo Zagreb, the squad spared some energies and still easily got the job done. Of course, in a year where we finish on top of our group, the two pots are not that different strength-wise, but hopefully we will be a little lucky on Monday. Also, I am realizing now what an awful way the draw is to determine a team’s fate in a competition – UEFA should come up with an algorithm to rank who advanced from 1 to 16 and proceed accordingly, so nobody can blame an early exit on misfortune and the sides can construct their path with the performances in the group stage.

Three tough games await Juventus before Christmas: Derby della Mole, the Roma match and the Supercup against Milan in Doha, with a cupcake against Crotone in there as well. A sweep would send a clear message of superiority to the rest of the League, but also finishing the calendar year with a four-point lead over the suitors or more would not be that bad.

We also have some good news from the infirmary for a change. Paulo Dybala returned on Wednesday and he looked spry. Since he only played fifteen minutes, he is unlikely to start, but will act as super sub until he is 100% and that is an incredible weapon. Andrea Barzagli is close to recovering from his dislocated shoulder and could make an appearance before 2017, however the defence, masterfully put together in the summer, has not skipped a beat without Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci.

The reports about Sunday’s tactics are mixed and Massimiliano Allegri tends to rely on good ol’ 3-5-2 in big matches, but considering the fact that he switched to 4-3-1-2 after half an hour against Dinamo with Juan Cuadrado as right back (!), I would say that the diamond formation, which worked well against Atalanta, is the leading candidate as of right now. Without defensive duties, Miralem Pjanic is much more involved offensively and that also helps the centre-forwards, who do not have to track back to get the ball. Furthermore, the midfield is more muscular with one more body and right now it is at full strength. Since the defensive line has held its own, I would say that there are no real contraindications for 4-3-1-2 right now, besides some questionable depth at RB, but Stephan Lichststeiner is usually durable.

This formation unlocks the nuclear option of having Dybala behind Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic, which could work thanks to the work rate of all three strikers, the Croatian in particular. I suspect we will see it fairly soon if we need to score.

If the coach chooses 4-3-1-2, then there would only be two real doubts about the XI. Daniele Rugani has played very well recently and I think his skills are complementary to both Giorgio Chiellini and Medhi Benatia, while the characteristics of these two are a little overlapping. Rugani plus whoever forms a complete set of centre-backs, while Chiellini plus Benatia is a very aggressive and physical combo, but lacks a little of patience and finesse. Furthermore, the Moroccan defender has not looked as explosive as at the beginning of the season after his latest injury, so I will go with the two Italians.

Sami Khedira will return to the lineup after a routine day off, while Stefano Sturaro is the fourth midfielder in the pecking order, so he is the favourite to start. Mario Lemina played well on Wednesday, performing like somebody who has something to prove, and he does, so he has a puncher’s chance to feature from the get-go. Kwadwo Asamoah had a decent showing midweek and he is the only true left-footed. A fancy solution would include Alex Sandro in the midfield and Patrice Evra at left-back, but I would avoid experiments since there are plenty of more natural fits. With a 3-5-2, all three centre-backs would play, with Sturaro on the bench and likely Cuadrado on the right wing.

Probable lineup:

4-3-1-2: Buffon; Lichsteiner, Rugani, Chiellini, Sandro; Khedira, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pjanic; Mandzukic, Higuain.

Injuries:

Bonucci (hamstring), Barzagli (shoulder), Alves (fibula), Pjaca (fibula), Mandragora (foot).

Suspensions:

None.

Torino

Even though the ever demanding Sinisa Mihajlovic would think otherwise, Torino are having a great year and they have taken advantage of Fiorentina and Inter’s struggles to insert themselves into the Europa League conversation- They have a very explosive attack, the third best in the League scoring-wise, and they do not have clear holes in the starting lineup. Their only big flaw is that they do not perform as well on the road, where they do not seem to be able to beat above average opponents. However, they play at home this time, so we can toss this issue aside.

Besides the fierceness of Andrea Belotti, who has clearly flourished into a complete striker over the last calendar year, the flanks are the biggest threats. The rookie Antonio Barreca on the left and either Davide Zappacosta or Lorenzo De Silvestri on the right are relentless in their production of crosses, while Adem Ljajic and Iago Falque are excellent in cutting to the center and shooting, even from long range. Falque is an extremely intelligent player, who always knows where to position himself to be the most dangerous. Ljajic is more ball dominant, but his play-making compliments the trident well where the other two do not need many touches.

Of course the midfielders often thrive thanks to the focus of the defence on the forwards: Marco Benassi and Daniele Baselli are both having a good season, the former in particular – Baselli has stepped up after his coach called him out for lack of intensity. Their cuts in the box and their work on the counter-attacks is something to keep an eye on. Mirko Valdifiori has solved a multi-year quest to find a good enough deep-lying midfielder.

I would say that the center-backs duos, usually Luca Rossettini and Leandro Castan, is probably the least exciting part of their lineup. The goalkeeper Joe Hart is obviously a big name, but I would say that he has been pretty average so far: certainly better than Daniele Padelli, but not world class. Their defence is not rock solid and, in general, they tend to play on emotions.

Especially at home, they play aggressively and they haunt whoever has the ball, starting with Belotti and Falque whose work rate is immense. Their midfield is not that physical, sometimes Mihajlovic likes to put Afriyie Acquah or Joel Obi even though they are clearly inferior players to improve on that. The Serbian coach must really fear Juventus’ muscle, because there are reports indicating that Lucas Boye, a winger with a centre-forward frame, could start over Falque. They will be without Cesare Bovo, Obi and maybe Giuseppe Vives, but none of them is a starter.

Probable lineup:

4-3-3: Hart; Zappacosta, Rossettini, Castan, Barreca; Benassi, Valdifiori, Baselli; Falque, Belotti, Ljajic.

Injuries:

Bovo (hamstring), Obi (hamstring), Molinaro (knee).

Suspensions:

None.

Trezeguet bets on Higuain

  http://www.football-italia.net/95484/trezeguet-bets-higuain

Dec 10, 2016

David Trezeguet believes Gonzalo Higuain will be the decisive man when Juventus visit Torino for the Derby della Mole.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“I think Andrea Belotti is the heart and soul of the Torino side and he’s in great shape at the moment too,” Trezeguet told Tuttosport.

“He has the Granata spirit and is also proving his quality with the Nazionale, so I think he’s ready for the step up in quality.

“Higuain is concentrated and very fired up. The goal he scored in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb gave back some confidence. He wants to leave his mark in his first Turin Derby.

“Don’t forget about Mario Mandzukic, because his work in helping the team is just extraordinary. In my day we almost always won the derby, so I have positive and sweet memories of this fixture.

“I remember one derby we won with my goal in the final minutes. It’s always pleasing to win the derby, but if you want to really enjoy it then score at the end.

“Juve have brought in some well-known champions like Higuain, Miralem Pjanic and Dani Alves, but they have faced the Juventus challenge with humility.

“These big names entered the locker room on tip-toes, trying to learn and understand the team. This made me realise that Juventus are back to being a top club.”

Dec 10, 2016

Torino fans are more fired up than they have been in years for the Derby della Mole, as Juventus look vulnerable.

Mere hours after tickets for the season’s first Turin Derby went on sale, Granata fans had swiped each and every single one, a rare occurrence for a faith known for its passion.

The enthusiasm is back among Torino fans, their side led by a man (Sinisa Mihajlovic) who is beginning to change the mentality around the Filadelfia, his side beating Fiorentina and Roma as well as crushing Bologna, Crotone and Cagliari in their wake.

There’s a lot to be tremendously excited about, even compared to the successful Giampiero Ventura era. The Granata have a swashbuckling attacking trio, composed of accomplished dribblers Iago Falque and Adem Ljajic (12 Serie A goals among them), as well as €100m (his overseas release clause) man Andrea Belotti (10 goals, three more with Italy).

The good news is that Torino have already got the hardest part out of the way, earning Juventus’ respect by revamping the Derby della Mole under Ventura, winning their first grudge match in 20 years back in 2015.

The problem is, the Old Lady has been forced to teach herself new tricks this season, and being roasted by Genoa (3-1) prompted a furious reaction, the Bianconeri squashing Atalanta last week.

The switch to 4-4-2 against La Dea, as well as the use of Stefano Sturaro, breathed new life into the Bianconeri, Miralem Pjanic suddenly morphing into the Bianconeri’s beating heart. Even better, Mario Mandzukic has gone from being a goalmouth predator in Munich to chasing down every ball as if it contained the elixir of youth in Turin.

Then again, backing the Burgundy Bunch is hardly foolish. Bench players Daniele Rugani and Medhi Benatia replace Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci. Even without the injury crisis at the back, Juve have kept only two clean sheets in their last 10 competitive games.

Torino boast Europe’s ninth-best attack, their 31 goals the result of an approach that owes a lot to their incarnating the Mihajlovic way, biting at opponents’ heels and playing scintillating football with their Italian backbone of Antonio Barreca, Daniele Baselli, Mirko Valdifiori and Marco Benassi.

Keep an eye on: Daniele Baselli (Torino) - Mihajlovic ripped into the young Baselli, accusing him of lacking determination earlier this season. Sure enough, the 24-year-old has kept up his form, even thanking his Coach for pushing him. He’s already matched last year’s goal tally of four and, along with Marco Benassi, can swarm a light Juventus midfield.

Form Guide: Torino (L W W W D) Juventus (W L W W W)

Last season: Torino 1-4 Juventus

Stat fact: This game may be decided in the second half, where Torino have conceded six goals in the final 15 minutes, while scoring 26 per cent of their goals in the 45-60 minute period.

Top tip: Both teams to score

Torino (probable): Hart; Zappacosta, Rossettini, Castan, Barreca; Benassi, Valdifiori, Baselli; Iago Falque, Belotti, Ljajic

Suspended: None

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Rugani, Benatia, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Khedira, Marchisio, Pjanic, Alex Sandro; Mandzukic, Higuain

Suspended: None

Torino v Juventus: Preview

Dec 10, 2016

Juventus defender Alex Sandro says his side need no reminding over the importance of their upcoming fixtures as the Serie A leaders look to end 2016 on a high.

Juve face city rivals Torino on Sunday knowing a victory would extend their lead at the summit to seven points ahead of Monday's meeting between nearest challengers Roma and AC Milan in the capital.

Massimiliano Allegri's men then play host to Roma next weekend before finishing the year with a league trip to Crotone and the Italian Supercup clash with Milan in Qatar.

Sandro said on his club's website: ``Everyone in the dressing room is looking forward to taking on Torino in the derby, not to mention Roma the following week and Milan in the Supercup final.

``We'll need to be at our very best and play like a proper Juventus side to get the results that we want. We need no reminding of the importance of this little run of fixtures and as ever, our target can't be anything other than three victories.''

First up for Juve is this weekend's Turin derby, and midfielder Stefano Sturaro is eagerly looking forward to that clash.

He said: ''The derby is always a great occasion and it's the kind of fixture that I prefer, one that gets the fans' hearts racing.

''Even as a supporter, I loved the feeling of excitement before a big game and now that I'm a player, I feel it more intensely.''

Juventus start the fixture as firm favourites having won five of their last six league matches.

But seventh-placed Torino had won four successive games in all competitions before last weekend's 2-0 setback at Sampdoria.

Midfielder Sturaro said: ''We'll be coming up against a very strong Torino side that has improved a lot since last season.

''Form goes out of the window in derbies so we must make sure we play the game we want to play straight from kick-off.''

Torino boss Sinisa Mihajlovic knows the quality of Juve - but was keen to praise the qualities of his own players in the build-up to the contest.

He explained: ``Juventus are the strongest team and they have many quality players. We'll have to play a great match.

``But they too will have to worry about us because we have quality. We must always play like men, giving everything, and with intensity, ambition and courage.''

Mihajlovic was asked how important the contributions of Torino's leading goalscorer Andrea Belotti - nicknamed the Rooster - and Juve's free-scoring marksman Gonzalo Higuain would be at his pre-match press conference.

The 47-year-old said: ``Higuain is very strong and I'm keeping the Rooster - but both teams have other quality players who can settle the game with one strike. But I am convinced teams win matches, not individuals.''

Allegri: 'It's not a traditional Toro'

  http://www.football-italia.net/95486/allegri-its-not-traditional-toro

Dec 10, 2016

Max Allegri warned the current Torino “don’t fit the old-fashioned Granata stereotype and are therefore more dangerous” for Juventus.

The Derby della Mole kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“We’ll see tomorrow whether experience or youthful exuberance wins out. It will be a very difficult game, as Torino are among the top scorers in Serie A and have great forwards like Iago Falque, Adem Ljajic and Andrea Belotti,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“The defeat to Genoa was basically a replica of last year’s performance against Carpi. The difference is that against Carpi we started well and had a bad few final minutes, so got away with it. Against Genoa our bad spell was the first 29 minutes.

“Football is made up of duels. You have to take men on and win tackles. The derby is always indecipherable and unpredictable.

“The derby is a special occasion. I think actually having a midweek game was helpful, because we couldn’t get too wrapped up in thinking about the derby.

“We are pleased the fans came to visit us yesterday in training. We know it’s a game that means a great deal to them and they ask for extra effort, but that’s never something they need to worry about with us.

“It’s a very keenly-felt derby and beating Toro is always difficult, as we’ve seen over my two years at Juve. Tomorrow will be even more hard-fought, but I repeat Toro are much more technically-gifted than past Torino teams. They don’t resemble the old-fashioned Granata stereotype, which is what makes this a much more dangerous match for Juve.”

Allegri still has an injury crisis ruling out Leonardo Bonucci, Dani Alves, Andrea Barzagli and Marko Pjaca, so what system will he use?

“You always seem to guess it, even when I think it’s impossible to do so! Paulo Dybala is fine and I have to make a decision. The good news is that Barzagli is training and as soon as he gets the all-clear on the shoulder he should be able to play, so hopefully next week.

More than pressure, there was curiosity last season to see Daniele Rugani play. It’s always a growth process and he still has to grow in terms of technique, though he has improved a great deal in terms of character and experience. He has what it takes to spend 10 years at Juventus.

“It’s probable we will play with four at the back, especially as Torino have three strikers, but I still have to make a decision on that too.”

With Dani Alves injured, Stephan Lichtsteiner suddenly becomes a valuable figure.

“He has always been useful. We made a choice to leave him out of the Champions League squad, but he has always put in good performances and been very professional.”

Torino are the hosts of this fixture and had more time to prepare, as Juve beat Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

“We lost three games after Champions League duty and hopefully that run is now over. It’s only normal that the other clubs all hope we’ll lose. It’s a long season, we have 36 points and four games at our disposal before the first half of the campaign is finished, so we need to put together as many results as possible.”

Roma managed to get Kevin Strootman’s two-match ban revoked, so he will be able to face Milan and Juventus.

“It’s nothing to do with me and changes nothing. A judge had to rule and he did. We mustn’t get distracted by all this stuff, but focus on putting in a strong performance.”

Juventus squad for Torino: Buffon, Neto, Audero; Chiellini, Benatia, Alex Sandro, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Evra; Pjanic, Khedira, Cuadrado, Marchisio, Hernanes, Lemina, Asamoah, Sturaro; Higuain, Mandzukic, Dybala

Mihajlovic: 'Toro can slay Juve dragon'

  http://www.football-italia.net/95487/mihajlovic-toro-can-slay-juve-dragon

Dec 10, 2016

Sinisa Mihajlovic warned Juventus “are up against Torino history, population and all those who work for us. We’ll leave the pitch with heads held high.”

The Derby della Mole kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The Coach wanted to prove a point by holding his Press conference sat next to captain Benassi, a long-serving physio and historic Granata fan.

“Tomorrow Juventus will not just be up against 11 players, but against our history, the Toro population and all those who work with us,” said Mihajlovic.

“They must sweat every last drop to get the better of us. I don’t know how the derby will end, but I do know we’ll leave the pitch with our heads held high, having played in the Toro style by giving everything we’ve got.

“I want to see a beautiful derby, full of intensity, but also fair. Because the derby is not a war. The derby is the essence of football: there is intensity, effort, mocking, emotion, but it remains a game. It might make us cry or get angry at times, but it is still a game.

“Juventus are the strongest team in Italy. They have many quality players, a great club, are strong physically and technically, aggressive and dangerous in the air.

“We must put in a great performance, but so must Juve. It’s no coincidence we’ve got the third most prolific strike force in Serie A. Juve need to worry about us too, because we’ve got quality.

“Giampiero Boniperti said: Winning is the only thing that counts. As far as I am concerned, what counts is seeing my team play like Toro, because when we do, we usually win.

“Juventus are like a dragon, so when you cut one head off, another two grow in its place. I have a lot of respect for them, but no fear. We’ll do everything to beat them and achieve this satisfaction.

“The derby is a fundamental match, but it is also worth three points. Therefore we must face it with the right mentality, trying not to rest on our laurels if we win and not plunging into panic if we lose.”

Allegri: Beating Torino is always difficult

Manager’s pre-match press conference

Juventus take on local rivals Torino tomorrow in the Derby della Mole, which has been a hard-fought affair in recent years. Manager Massimiliano Allegri expects that tomorrow’s game will be even harder to win with how well the youth brigade has been working at Toro this season.

“We’ll see tomorrow whether experience or youthful exuberance wins out. It will be a very difficult game, as Torino are among the top scorers in Serie A and have great forwards like Iago Falque, Adem Ljajic and Andrea Belotti.

Leonardo Bonucci, Dani Alves, Andrea Barzagli and Marko Pjaca are all out with injuries, so Allegri was asked about what formation he would line up tomorrow.

“You always seem to guess it, even when I think it’s impossible to do so! Paulo Dybala is fine and I have to make a decision. The good news is that Barzagli is training and as soon as he gets the all-clear on the shoulder he should be able to play, so hopefully next week.

“More than pressure, there was curiosity last season to see Daniele Rugani play.

Has the importance of Stephan Lichtsteiner this seasons been forgotten with Dani Alves’ signing?

“He has always been useful. We made a choice to leave him out of the Champions League squad, but he has always put in good performances and been very professional.”

Torino are hosts tomorrow and have had a week’s rest while the Bianconeri were winning Group H of the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

“We lost three games after Champions League duty and hopefully that run is now over. It’s only normal that the other clubs all hope we’ll lose.

“It’s a long season, we have 36 points and four games at our disposal before the first half of the campaign is finished, so we need to put together as many results as possible.”

Darmian: 'Torino in Europe!'

  http://www.football-italia.net/95497/darmian-torino-europe

Dec 10, 2016

Matteo Darmian “dreams of seeing Torino in Europe” and is cheering on Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men in the Turin Derby with Juventus.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The former Granata full-back is currently at Manchester United, though there are consistent reports of a return to Serie A for Inter, Napoli or Roma.

“The derby was a game that meant a lot to us and we were really fired up,” Darmian told Toro.it.

“Until last season, Toro hadn’t won the derby for 20 years and we knew that was an important opportunity to break the run. It was unforgettable for me to score in a 2-1 victory, especially as I rarely score goals.”

Giampiero Ventura was the Coach at the time and has since moved on to the Italy job.

“I think it’s the right reward for all Ventura has done in his career. I am very happy for him, he’s a great Coach and we know each other very well.

“I’ve never really met Mihajlovic, but he seems a Coach capable of transmitting his ideas to the squad as well as his passion and determination. The team is doing very well and following his instructions.

“I’d love to see Torino beat Juventus again this weekend, but I’d appreciate another ‘gift’ from Toro – seeing them back in Europe at the end of the season.

“This is my desire for the Granata, who I continue to follow closely. After all, they remain in my heart and I wish them every success.”

Allegri: Turin derby is dangerous for Juve

The reigning champions have long dominated inter-city rivalries, but their manager

acknowledges that Torino's forwards will present a tough test on Sunday.

Dec 10, 2016

Massimiliano Allegri believes Juventus are in greater danger of a rare Turin derby defeat than in recent years against a Torino side blessed with a wealth of attacking talent.

Torino have won just one of their last 20 league matches against the defending Serie A champions, albeit that came last April in a 2-1 home win.

Juve visit Turin's Stadio Olimpico four points clear at the top of Serie A, with Torino 11 points behind the leaders.

But Torino possess one of the league's top scorers in Italy striker Andrea Belotti, who has 10 goals to his name, while Iago Falque has scored seven times and Adem Ljajic has found the net on five occasions.

And Allegri is very wary of Torino's forward line, telling a pre-match media conference: "We'll see whether experience or youthful exuberance wins out.

"It will be a very difficult game, as Torino are among the top scorers in Serie A and have great forwards like Iago Falque, Adem Ljajic and Andrea Belotti.

"The derby is a special occasion. I think actually having a midweek game [against Dinamo Zagreb] was helpful, because we couldn't get too wrapped up in thinking about the derby.

"It's a very keenly-felt derby and beating Toro is always difficult, as we've seen over my two years at Juve. It will be even more hard-fought, but I repeat Toro are much more technically-gifted than past Torino teams.

"They don't resemble the old-fashioned Granata stereotype, which is what makes this a much more dangerous match for Juve."

A meeting with an attack of Torino's quality figures to be especially testing for a Juve side without defenders Leonardo Bonucci, Dani Alves and Andrea Barzagli, though the latter is poised to return ahead of next week's clash with Roma.

"The good news is that Barzagli is training and as soon as he gets the all-clear on the shoulder he should be able to play, so hopefully next week," Allegri added.

"It's probable we will play with four at the back, especially as Torino have three strikers, but I still have to make a decision on that too."

Higuain, Juventus aim to silence the critics in the Derby della Mole

"Tomorrow Juventus will not just be up against 11 players, but against our history, the Toro population and all those who work with us," said Sinisa Mihajlovic. In an evocative pre-match conference, the coach sat alongside a historic Torino fan, a long serving physio and midfielder Marco Benassi and delivered heartfelt comments in a bid to reawaken Toro's pride, reminding them of their history, legacy and ambition.

In 2011, Real Madrid fans held a banner aloft requesting "a worthy rival for a decent derby" as Atletico Madrid failed to provide a challenge for so many years. In Turin, the situation is not too dissimilar. In the last 20 years, Torino have only won the Derby della Mole once with the Old Lady picking up 15 wins. More importantly, the Granata have been defeated by their city rivals more times than any other team in the league.

Juventus have dominated the league and their opponent for so many years that a win is almost achieved even before a ball has been kicked. It is perhaps for this reason that Mihajlovic's chose his words so carefully, hoping his bold and passionate comments would reignite the excitement and ensure a worthy challenge especially as, for the first time, Toro will host the game in their newly renamed stadium, the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino. Their history, the coach hopes, should inspire a performance worthy of champions.

Torino, under the auspices of their current coach, are an improved side. Boasting the league's third best attack (31 goals), no other team has managed as many goals from open play. Playing a 4-3-3 formation, the Granata know how to sit deep and defend, waiting for the opponent to attack. Once they draw out their opponent, they're capable of elevating the tempo and applying pressure in their quest for goal. Efficient and deadly, they are an opportunistic side who love to pounce on errors.

Boasting a dangerous triumvirate, Torino have a forward line that works well together. While Andrea Belotti has proved highly efficient, scoring 32% of the team's goals, it's important to note Iaqo Falque and Adem Ljajic's contributions. Playing close to the striker, they not only help score but provide the assists too. Working to create space for one another, the trio will make life difficult for Juve's defence.

In fact, newspapers have recently compared the impact Belotti has had on Torino to Higuain's on Juve. The Argentine has struggled to reproduce his dazzling form from last season, as the many injuries Juve have suffered have forced the forward to sacrifice his lethality in front of goal for the sake of the collective team. As a player who like Belotti, excelled as part of a trident while at Napoli, he will need to be patient as Massimiliano Allegri attempts to find the right tactical balance to unleash the talent of his strike force.

Allegri hopes that Higuain's goal midweek will help the striker recover his confidence. Against Dinamo Zagreb, Higuain second guessed himself and overthought his every movement, squandering opportunities until he scored the opening goal. As a man who relies on his instincts, the Argentine can only truly perform when he believes in himself and gives his all.

Against Torino, all eyes will be on him, comparing his every effort with that of Belotti's which suits Mario Mandzukic perfectly. The Granata may boast a fluid attack but they do have their problems at the back, conceding more headed goals (7) than any other team in the league. As such, Mandzukic's set of talents are bound to cause problems especially as continuity has gifted the forward a chance to truly perfect his skills. Determined, physical and an aerial threat, he has been the man Juventus have relied on in recent weeks, both in attack and in defence.

Since Paolo Dybala only just returned from injury, it's unlikely he will start the match so Allegri is set to rely on the Higuain-Mandzukic partnership yet again with Miralem Pjanic played just behind them. If Juventus can produce a united and determined performance similar to what they managed against Atalanta, they can win any game. However, far too often this season we have seen them succumb to individuality which could well hurt them against Torino. Mihajlovic has excelled at creating a solid unit with players willing to fight for one another and pitted against a team that has struggled in matches that have come after European adventures, this could be a special night for the home side.

Humbled Hart a worthy adversary for Buffon in Turin derby

The goalkeeper's world was in danger of falling apart after being cast aside

by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola but he has been reborn in Serie A.

Dec 10, 2016

Torino sporting director Gianluca Petrachi cut a disappointed figure when it became clear that he would not be able to agree a deal with Sampdoria for Emiliano Viviano.

However, then the goalkeeper's agent, Claudio Vigorelli, suggested a rather surprising alternative. "I can give you a gem," he claimed. "There is one very, very good English player available: the goalkeeper Joe Hart."

Petrachi was aware that Hart's future at Manchester City had been thrown into the doubt, with the 29-year-old having been dropped to the bench by new coach Pep Guardiola for the club's Premier League season-opener against Sunderland, on August 13.

However, he was not in the least bit confident that Torino could really beat other more illustrious clubs to the signature of England's No.1, particularly if the word was out that Hart was surplus to requirements at the Etihad.

There was another potential stumbling block: Sinisa Mihajlovic. The notorious disciplinarian had no doubts about Hart's attributes as a goalkeeper, he just wanted to be sure of his character. There had been rumours in England that Guardiola had had as many doubts over Hart's perceived arrogance and strong influence over the City dressing, as the goalkeeper's passing ability.

“Mihajlovic asked him if he really believed in Torino and with what humility would he face this kind of experience, because he said that Torino would be pleased if he came, but only with the right mindset in order to really lend a hand," Petrachi explained.

1ut6w1f6sl60e1mcjglo1vdo5v.png?t=-561967

Hart insisted that he would be the model professional, reassured him that he would arrive with no airs or graces. As he himself admitted, he was just desperate to play.

"I'm not going to lie: I wasn’t sat there with 25 options," he subsequently said of his summer of uncertainty. "I had a situation at City where my playing time was going to be limited, full stop.

"So, I had to look elsewhere. It was pretty quick. I wasn’t given much time [to figure out a deal], so when the [Torino] opportunity came, I was really, really grateful.

"When I spoke to Mihajlovic, he made it clear that they did actually want me to play in the team, so that was enough." To make the move happen, at least. For Hart to succeed in a country where so many of his compatriots had failed, he knew that he would have embrace the culture and, most crucially of all, the language.

In complete contrast to Ravel Morrison, who former Lazio boss Stefano Pioli didn't have a word of Italian three months after his arrival at the Stadio Olimpico, Hart immediately learned 40-50 words essential for communicating with team-mates on the field.

His willingness to learn, coupled with a professional yet amicable approach, made him an immediately popular figure within the dressing room. Indeed, Joel Obi revealed that he and his colleagues were impressed that Hart did not seem preoccupied with City - or bitter over the way in which he had been offloaded.

ri7ptsgdb1o71lvtq8vek0e3b.png?t=-5619674

"Joe has quickly picked up basic Italian but he only talks about positives at Manchester City - nothing negative," the Nigerian revealed.

“He reflects on the great moments – winning titles, big games and derbies – and tells us funny stuff about his team-mates, leaving us in stitches."

Nobody was laughing when Hart made a costly error on his Torino debut, gifting Atalanta an equaliser in a 2-1 loss in Bergamo. There was also a spilled shot against Inter that drew derision from the critics.

However, after a succession of excellent displays, Torino now feel that the joke is on City for giving them a world-class goalkeeper.

"Guardiola says Hart isn’t the best with his feet, but from what I’ve seen he’s got decent feet," Mihajlovic mused. "If Guardiola wants someone like Guardiola in goal, then that’s going to be tricky...

“If Guardiola has any other players he’d like to hand over, then we’ll gladly take a look. We are happy Hart is here and are convinced this is the right team and city for him. Now it’s up to Hart to continue proving himself.”

Certainly, Sunday's Derby della Mole will be the biggest test date of Hart's rehabilitation. No matter who Juve select up front - Gonzalo Higuain, Mario Mandzukic or Paulo Dybala (Massimiliano Allegri has even hinted that he could field all three in tandem) - the former Shrewsbury Town starlet is likely to be a busy man.

1lcar7zs62x321xn6d057bv1dw.png?t=-561966

For the humbled Hart, though, this will be another new experience to savour, another learning experience, another opportunity to play against a man he describes as one of his "footballing heroes", Juventus and Italy No.1 Gianluigi Buffon.

"He has everything!" Hart enthused when asked about Buffon's greatest attribute. "It’s impossible to choose one thing, but it’s his way of being the best, the way he owns the role."

There will be mutual respect there, too, though, for the way in which Hart owned what was a turbulent summer for him. After all, it was Buffon who backed Hart to recover from being dropped from the City line-up at the start of the season.

"He has been in this position before and then when he returned he played some of the best football of his career," the Juventus captain told Goal at the time.

"The ability is there. We know he has that. But, just as importantly, he has character - and that is one of the most important qualities you can have as a goalkeeper."

In that sense, Hart has proven his worth on and off the field over the past six months, proving himself every bit as valuable as the gem that Torino thought him to be.
