Allegri: 'Marchisio starts with Lyon'

http://www.football-italia.net/93777/allegri-marchisio-starts-lyon?

Nov 1, 2016

Max Allegri confirmed Claudio Marchisio will start against Lyon in the Champions League, but warned Juventus not to “ruin what we’ve built.”

It kicks off in Turin on Wednesday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 GMT and follows on from a 1-0 Bianconeri victory in France two weeks ago.

“It will be a difficult match, as on Saturday Lyon played a good game on their travels,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Tomorrow qualification is in our hands and after that we can think about first place. Let’s do one thing at a time. The most important thing is getting a positive result, knowing it won’t be easy.

“Marchisio will play tomorrow. He rested against Napoli at the weekend for the most part. He brings experience, is specific to that midfield role and has improved a great deal over the last two years. Sami Khedira is fine and will also play, while all the defenders are available.

“We are just at the start of the season, so it’s normal that we can do better. We need to be competitive in all areas by March, but before then let’s not forget we haven’t qualified yet. We won at Lyon, but it was only 0-0 with Sevilla.

“Tomorrow we mustn’t ruin what we’ve built so far in this group. Danger is around every corner.”

Juventus bid to secure Champions League knockout place against Lyon

Claudio Marchisio and Sami Khedira will team up in midfield for Juventus as they bid to secure a place in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.

A win against Lyon at the Juventus Stadium would take them through to the knockout stage with two games to spare.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri told a news conference: "Marchisio's playing tomorrow.

"He gives us his experience and he's settled in very well to his role as our playmaker. Overall, we're in good shape. Khedira is fit and he will also play."

Juve are aiming to transform their domestic dominance into European glory this season, but Allegri warned: "You can only win the Champions League if you get through the group stage, so we'd be wise to think about Lyon and take things one step at a time.

"It's going to be a difficult game, like they all are in Europe. We need a good result tomorrow, knowing that it will be anything but easy.

"Our aim is to arrive at March and be competitive for the final rush of the season, in the league and in the Champions League.

"But we haven't got through the group stage yet -- so let's take it one step at a time."

Juventus v Lyon Champions League Preview

juventus

Juventus

It made a welcome change to get a little luck in the Champions League last time out. We didn’t play anywhere close to our best, endured some horrible officiating, an unecessary sending off for Mario Lemina didn’t help matters….but thankfully Juan Cuadrado was on hand to change the game, leaving us sitting pretty atop Group H.

Our form both before and after the victory in France left some cause for concern. The win over Udinese was a scrappy and squalid affair – Low on quality, the match was eventually decided by some individual magic from Paulo Dybala. Our visit to Milan might have been the worst I’ve seen Juve play in a considerable amount of time. There was little in the way of midfield creativity, the strikers looked isolated, our defence was slow to react and on the few occasions we tried to threaten, Milan were more than equal to us.

Fast forward two weeks and things are looking markedly better – A demolition of Sampdoria was a perfect reaction, especially as we invited pressure and still managed a comfortable 4-1 win. Last weekends victory over Napoli was all the more significant as it represented our toughest league match to date. Despite a slow and cautious first half, the team exploded into life in the final 45 mins and sealed a deserved win with Gonzalo Higuain netting the winner, his 8th goal in all competitions so far. It’s strong and positive form to take into a match that could have a significant impact on our progression in the Champions League.

Max Allegri confirmed part of his starting XI earlier today and warned the team against complacency.

“Tomorrow we mustn’t ruin what we’ve built so far in this group. Danger is around every corner.”

With Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini both missing, the starting XI writes itself – Gigi Buffon in goal while Medhi Benatia joins Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli. In midfield, it’ll be Khedira, Marchisio and Miralem Pjanic while Alex Sandro and Dani Alves play on the flanks and Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic up front.

Probable lineup:

3-5-2: Buffon; Barzgli, Bonucci, Benatia; Alves, Khedira, Marchisio, Pjanic, Sandro; Mandzukic, Higuain.

Injuries:

Pjaca (fibula), Mandragora (foot), Dybala (thigh), Chiellini (thigh)

Allegri: Buffon represents world football

Manager’s pre-match press conference

-buffon-represents-world-football-juventus-lyon-champions-league-comments

Nov 1, 2016

Juventus take on Lyon in the Champions League tomorrow at Juventus Stadium, and manager Massimiliano Allegri has made the club’s priorities for the next few weeks very clear.

“It’s normal that Juventus needs to keep improving as we’re only at the start of the season. Our objective, as always, is to be going strong in all three competitions by March.

“In order to do that, however, we need to get out of the group. We can’t be thinking about winning the Champions League when we’re not even in the knockout stages yet. We have to be on our guard tomorrow and make sure we don’t undo the good work of winning away to Lyon a fortnight ago.

“It's up to the players to deliver a good performance and treat the fans to a place in the last 16 with two games to spare. That’s our first aim of the season. The second is that of topping the group. Our third, looking at things in chronological order, is to win the Italian Super Cup in Doha just before Christmas.”

He went on to talk about Wednesday’s opponents, starting off by paying tribute to club captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon who preserved the away win at Lyon -

"For me, Buffon represents world football. He's an extraordinary player who, for the past 20 years, has been the best of the bunch.

“We can expect a difficult game against Lyon, who secured a fine away win at the weekend against Toulouse and played very well especially in defence.

“Tomorrow’s match for us is crucial because victory would allow us to wrap up qualification to the knockout stages and take an important step towards finishing first in the group.”

Allegri also gave an update on the squad’s fitness ahead of the game -

“Marchisio will play tomorrow. I rested him for the first 70 minutes or so on Saturday after coming back to the fold in an intense encounter last Wednesday against Sampdoria.

“He’s certainly brought experience to the midfield. In the last two years he’s really felt at home in that holding role and improved a lot, but he still has room for further growth and development.

“Sami Khedira will partner Marchisio in the middle, but you’ll have to wait and see about the third midfielder tomorrow night.

“Giorgio Chiellini aside, all of our defenders are available and fully fit. Patrice Evra is ready again after recovering from a knock last week against Sampdoria and may well feature tomorrow.”

How Juventus miss Dybala

Paulo Dybala’s absence makes the Bianconeri more functional, and Gaby McKayisn’t sure that’s a good thing.

http://www.football-italia.net/93796/how-juventus-miss-dybala?

Nov 2, 2016

Massimiliano Allegri has already confirmed that Paulo Dybala will not make his Juventus return before the international break. While the Bianconeri have won two of their three matches in the Argentinian’s absence, there has nonetheless been a significant impact on their style of play.

With the Old Lady preferring a 3-5-2 formation, much of the creative burden falls on the second striker. Dybala has played that role with aplomb since moving to Turin, buzzing around either Gonzalo Higuain or Mario Mandzukic. It’s a dynamic familiar to Bianconeri fans - think Roberto Baggio and Gianluca Vialli, or Alessandro Del Piero’s partnership with David Trezeguet.

However, with Dybala absent and Marko Pjaca also sidelined, Allegri has been forced to deploy Mandzukic and Higuain as a pair. In truth, it’s a rather ill-fitting dynamic. Both men are penalty box operators, uncomfortable with dropping deep and taking players on.

Higuain is the better of the two in this role, and has operated notably wider and deeper in the matches against Sampdoria and Napoli. Pipita doesn’t have the creative instincts of his compatriot though, and he’s looked frustrated while Mandzukic has been left isolated up top.

In the last three games, the Croatian has had just one shot - which, to be fair, he scored - while Higuain has found the back of the net just once. Both players work well with Dybala, but they don’t complement each other.

La Joya’s spell on the sidelines has also made the Bianconeri a more functional outfit. Against Napoli, there were only seven successful take-ons for the home side, all of them outside of the box and most of them out wide. Compare that to the win at Empoli, where there were 21 successful take-ons, mostly in central areas.

Of course, the Partenopei are a far better side than Empoli, but the switch is indicative of a shift in the creative burden. Most teams, especially in Serie A, will look to sit in and frustrate the champions. Dybala forces teams to come out, opening up space for others.

If the 22-year-old drops deep to receive the ball, his long-range shooting means he can’t be left alone. That forces teams to press him, and the youngster’s prowess in the dribble can unlock a stubborn side. If a midfielder drops back to deal with Dybala, it frees up Sami Khedira or Miralem Pjanic to get forward. Should a defender step out, there will be breathing space for Higuain or Mandzukic.

In his absence, the attacking burden is shifted to the wing-backs to an even greater degree. Of the four goals against Sampdoria, one was a Mandzukic header from a Cuadrado cross, two more were Giorgio Chiellini efforts after set pieces.

Against Napoli the first goal was again scored by a centre-back, Leonardo Bonucci volleying home in the aftermath of a corner. Higuain’s winner came after the ball broke to him on the edge of the Napoli box, the Argentinian having dropped deep only to see his chipped through-ball intercepted.

Having more than one way to win is essential for any side. Indeed, Napoli and Roma would do well to take heed of Juventus’ ability to get results in different ways. In the long-term though, the Bianconeri can’t keep relying on crosses and set pieces.

An option would be to use Alex Sandro and Cuadrado in more advanced roles and use a lone centre-forward. After all, it worked fantastically well for an hour against Bayern Munich last season and would allow Allegri to rest his injury-prone centre-backs.

The return of Claudio Marchisio should help, freeing Pjanic to take up a creative role further forward. In addition, the squad will achieve greater cohesion as the season progresses - it’s worth remembering at this point last season Allegri’s side had taken 15 points and still romped to the Scudetto. Right now they have 27.

However, it’s clear that Dybala’s absence is being felt. A win over Lyon would all but secure Champions League qualification, and Tips Daddy is where to find the odds on that happening tonight, but Juventus will need La Joya to be fit and firing if they’re to make the impact in Europe that’s expected of them.

Line-ups: Juventus-Lyon

http://www.football-italia.net/93828/line-ups-juventus-lyon?

Nov 2, 2016

Juventus put Miralem Pjanic in a new trequartista role as they start Claudio Marchisio in a 4-3-1-2 against Alexandre Lacazette’s Lyon.

A fortnight ago the Bianconeri won 1-0 on French soil with a Juan Cuadrado stunner, but Mario Lemina was sent off and is therefore suspended.

Paulo Dybala, Marko Pjaca and Giorgio Chiellini are injured, so Marchisio gets his first Champions League start since February, having been out for six months with a torn ACL.

Stefano Sturaro also gets a rare outing and Max Allegri transforms his team into a 4-3-1-2 with Pjanic in the hole behind Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain.

Gigi Buffon silenced many critics with his heroics in Lyon and could well be called into action again tonight if the new system takes a while to bed in.

It’s a very special night for the goalkeeper, who makes his 100th Champions League appearance, not including qualifying rounds.

Lyon miss Mathieu Valbuena and Christophe Jallet, but Nicolas Nkoulou is back in the squad.

Bruno Genesio’s side have struggled so far this season, both in Europe and domestically, but received a boost at the weekend when winning 2-1 in Toulouse.

Lacazette scored both their goals in that match, but they move to 4-4-2 and have Emanuel Mammana back after he missed the first leg with flu.

Juventus lost only one Champions League game at their new stadium, winning 11, but it’s worth noting that in 2016 they’ve only had draws against Bayern Munich and Sevilla.

Juventus: Buffon; Dani Alves, Bonucci, Barzagli, Evra; Khedira, Marchisio, Sturaro; Pjanic; Mandzukic, Higuain

Lyon: Lopes; Rafael, Diakhaby, Mammana, Morel; Ghezzal, Gonalons, Tolisso, Rybus; Fekir, Lacazette

Lyon bench: Gorgelin, Yanga-Mbiwa, Grenier, Ferri, Darder, Cornet, Tousart

Marotta: 'Marchisio fundamental'

http://www.football-italia.net/93830/marotta-marchisio-fundamental?

Nov 2, 2016

Juventus director Beppe Marotta said Claudio Marchisio’s return is “fundamental” and Juan Cuadrado isn’t just a supersub.

“The team is competitive, but some injuries were damaging. Marchisio is fundamental for the midfield,” Marotta told Mediaset Premium.

“I don’t think there will be any opportunities to improve an already very strong squad in January. There was this chance for Axel Witsel over the summer and we tried to the end, but there were objective impediments.”

Juve won 1-0 in Lyon thanks to substitute Cuadrado’s solo strike and the Colombian is on the bench again this evening.

“Games last longer than 90 minutes and are often decided towards the end. Having players like Cuadrado on the bench is an extra weapon in the armoury of the Coach to modify the tactical system and also introduce fresh legs.

“Cuadrado is not a reserve, he is a co-first choice.”

Napoli were complimented for their performance despite a 2-1 defeat to Juventus on Saturday.

“Juventus are a very efficient team, so the result is important, but obviously the ideal would be to win with good football.”

HT 1-0: Higuain puts Lyon on the spot

http://www.football-italia.net/93831/ht-higuain-puts-lyon-spot

Nov 2, 2016

Gonzalo Higuain has given Juventus the half-time lead over Lyon with a penalty, but also missed an absolute sitter.

The Bianconeri knew a win would put them through to the Round of 16, having won 1-0 in France with Juan Cuadrado’s screamer. Mario Lemina was sent off and therefore suspended here, while Claudio Marchisio had his first Champions League appearance since February.

Miralem Pjanic was moved into a trequartista role in the new 4-3-1-2 system, as Paulo Dybala, Giorgio Chiellini and Marko Pjaca were sidelined. Lyon missed Mathieu Valbuena and Christophe Jallet.

Pjanic was incorrectly flagged offside when his angled drive was cleared off the line in the opening couple of minutes.

Gigi Buffon marked his 100th Champions League appearance and was called into an early save with his legs at the near post on Maciej Rybus, while Mario Mandzukic’s strike was smothered.

Lyon gave away an entirely avoidable penalty when Higuain threaded through for Stefano Sturaro, only to be barged over by clumsy Mouctar Diakhaby. Higuain stepped up and converted the spot-kick to put Juventus in front.

Marchisio’s fierce daisy-cutter clipped the outside of the post and Nabil Fekir’s free kick was blasted well over.

It should’ve been 2-0 to Juve on 40 minutes when Mandzukic dispossessed a defender and surged into the box, rolling across for Higuain, who incredibly fired over an empty net from 14 yards. It was an incredible miss.

Rachid Ghezzal drilled just wide from the edge of the box after shrugging off challenges.

Juventus 1-1 Lyon: Tolisso strikes

late to frustrate hosts

Gonzalo Higuain had converted from the penalty spot to put the Italians within reach of

a last-16 spot, but they will have to wait as they were pegged back in the final minutes.

http://www.goal.com/en/match/juventus-vs-olympique-lyonnais/2348404/report

Nov 2, 2016

Juventus missed the opportunity to punch their ticket to the Champions League knockout stages as Corentin Tolisso's late header earned Lyon a 1-1 draw in Turin.

Serie A champions Juve knew a win at Juventus Stadium on Wednesday would have been enough to secure a last-16 berth.

All appeared well for Massimiliano Allegri's men when Gonzalo Higuain clinically dispatched a first-half penalty after teenager Mouctar Diakhaby clumsily shoved Stefano Sturaro in the area.

That was Higuain's 100th goal for Italian teams and he missed a gilt-edged opportunity to double his and Juve's tally shortly before the break, while Mario Mandzukic was wasteful on a couple of occasions.

And it ultimately proved costly as Juve were punished for a lacklustre second-half showing when Tolisso met Rachid Ghezzal's late free-kick to earn a share of the spoils.

Juve now have eight points from four matches and will have another opportunity to progress next time out against Group H leaders Sevilla, while Lyon maintain slim hopes with four points from as many games.

Bruno Genesio's men were lively in the opening stages and Gianluigi Buffon - making his 100th Champions League appearance - made a smart save with his legs from Maciej Rybus, who had raced onto a sumptuous Alexandre Lacazette throughball.

Juve soon settled and Mandzukic's 25-yard effort drew a smart stop from Anthony Lopes.

And the hosts were gifted the opener in the 13th minute when Diakhaby inexplicably pushed Sturaro in the area, with Higuain smashing the resulting penalty into the bottom-left corner.

The goal boosted Juve with Miralem Pjanic dictating their expansive play, while Claudio Marchisio drilled a 25-yard effort that shaved the left post.

It should have been 2-0 five minutes before the break. Mandzukic robbed Emanuel Mammana of possession and slipped in Higuain, who ballooned his effort over with only Lopes to beat.

Lyon almost caught Juve cold before the break with Ghezzal dragging an effort wide and Maxime Gonalons heading off target.

But Juve threatened again early in the second half when Leonardo Bonucci's exquisite long pass was nodded down by Pjanic to Mandzukic, who skewed wide with a limp half-volley.

The home side were guilty on a couple of occasions of being wasteful in possession, but Lyon lacked the coolness to capitalise.

That became a familiar pattern of a lacklustre second half and Lyon wasted several promising positions.

However, Juve were finally punished six minutes from time. Ghezzal's excellent free-kick delivery from the right flank was met by Tolisso, who ghosted in against some uncharacteristically slack Juve defending to score the first goal the Bianconeri have conceded in this season's competition.

It was almost worse for Juve in injury-time when Andrea Barzagli slipped allowing Sergi Darder to launch a swift counter-attack, but Lacazette saw his effort hit the side-netting under pressure from Barzagli.

After the restart, Pjanic knocked down a searching Leo Bonucci pass for Mandzukic to scuff wide.

Andrea Barzagli was decisive to intercept a roll across for Lacazette on the counter-attack and Lyon poured on the pressure, albeit with uninspiring finishing.

Bonucci went off after a slight thigh problem and Alex Sandro replaced Pjanic, returning to a 3-5-2 for the final 23 minutes. Alex Sandro made an immediate impact, squirming between two defenders down the left to set up Higuain for a deflected strike.

Sturaro gave the ball away cheaply in midfield and Barzagli made a crucial full-body block on Maxwell Cornet’s effort. For all the pressure, Buffon was completely undisturbed, at least until the equaliser.

A long Ghezzal free kick had three players ready to nod it in and Corentin Tolisso got his head to it from six yards, leaving Buffon with no chance. It was the first goal Juve had conceded in the Champions League this season at the 32nd shot on target.

Lyon seemed more likely to win in stoppages, as with practically the last kick Lacazette sprinted on to a through ball past Barzagli, but Buffon narrowed the angle to force him wide.

Nov 2, 2016

The goal, first and foremost, was to get to the knockout stages of the Champions League. From there on, it was trying to finish atop a group that has basically been top heavy ever since the start of European play this season. It was simple, one goes with the other, one after the other.

Juventus, however, will have to wait another day for both of those to happen.

The reigning Serie A champions let Lyon hang around and it came back to bite them in the backside just as much as one could fear. Gonzalo Higuain’s 12th-minute goal gave Juve the lead, but instead of being able to tack on and put the French side away, Juventus only let the opposition hang around. And Lyon made Juve pay with under 10 minutes in regulation to go.

Same old Juve? Yeah, pretty much.

Gone is the top spot in Group H.

Gone is Juve’s advantage over Sevilla on goal differential.

Gone was the chance to lock up a spot in the knockout round on Wednesday night.

That fixture against Sevilla in Spain later on this month that was already important based on how the group was playing out just became that much more crucial.

Nobody wants to finish second in the group. Nobody. Yet it’s a distinct possibility now.

Cool from the spot, indeed. And, by the looks of it, starting to really round into form. (Better than the other kind of round he was at the beginning of his preseason training...)

The attacking Juve side that was charging forward in the first half wasn’t necessarily there in the final 45 or 50 minutes. Maybe some of that had to do with the fact that Max Allegri simply wanted to defend the lead once his team got it or that one of his most important defenders was battling an injury from the middle of the first half on.

Either way, Juventus couldn’t get the second goal it most certainly needed. And, because of that, Lyon made them pay. Again, Juventus proved to be its own worst enemy at times. I’d like to know why Allegri chose to take the foot off the gas after getting a 1-0 lead so early on. Juventus could have scored more than just one goal, probably should have scored more than just one goal, but didn’t. That was the problem — again.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

 • HOLY CRAP MAX ALLEGRI WENT WITH A 4-3-1-2.
 • I like Gonzalo Higuain. He was a good signing. (Finish your chances, though, Gonzalo.)
 • The combined age of Lyon’s starting center backs on Wednesday night is 39. Gigi Buffon is 38.
 • Speaking of Buffon, the one save he had to make in the first half was a damn good one. It’s almost like he’s pretty good in goal and not past it like some folks wanted to you to believe.
 • He didn’t score a goal, he didn’t get any assists or anything like that, but I loved Mario Mandzukic’s game against Lyon. The guy, who looked like he was going to come off injured a couple of times, just continued to be the absolute tank that he has shown time and time again. Sure, he doesn’t give the creativity and flair like Paulo Dybala, but he works his absolute tail off and leaves everything on the field.
 • Here’s your weekly reminder that Andrea Barzagli is 35 years old and playing some of the best football of his career right now. The guy just continues to amaze.
 • Sure, just as the injury list was getting relatively short, both Pjanic and Leonardo Bonucci go off injured at the same time in the second half. I don’t wanna write more injury posts tomorrow, guys, so please don’t let this mean you’re out for a couple of weeks.
 • Alex Sandro, who came on for Pjanic, immediately made a big play with his first touch of the ball. Rumor has it that guy is pretty, pretty good.
 • This was the first time where Claudio Marchisio showed signs of being a little off in his first handful of games back from his knee surgery. There was the usual defensive contributions, but his passing, which is usually on point, was not as crisp and accurate as it was in his previous two appearances last week.
 • With that said, Juventus are undefeated in which Marchisio has played in this season. I’m down to keep that trend going, guys.
 • Congratulations to Stefano Sturaro for becoming a massively hilarious and frequently used gif on the internet. Sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up.
 • Now go take care of business against Chievo over the weekend, Juventus, because nobody wants to go into the international break feeling as grumpy as we are right now after the way that game ended.

Juventus will have to wait to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League after a late Lyon goal denied them victory in Turin.

The hosts took the lead through a 13th-minute penalty from Gonzalo Higuain, but Corentin Tolisso earned the French side a 1-1 draw with the equaliser in the 85th minute.

Gianluigi Buffon was making his 100th Champions League appearance in goal for the Serie A leaders and he denied Maciej Rybus with an early save.

Both teams had chances in a frantic opening spell and Mario Mandzukic forced the first save from Anthony Lopes down the other end.

Two minutes later, Juventus took the lead. Higuain broke away down the left and played in Stefano Sturaro.

There did not appear too much danger but Mouctar Diakhaby inexplicably pushed the midfielder and Higuain tucked away his ninth goal of the season from the spot.

The dangerous Rybus threatened an immediate response with a volley just over the bar but Lyon were fortunate not to be two down after Claudio Marchisio's fine volley struck a post.

Higuain has barely put a foot wrong since joining Juventus in the summer but he spurned a golden chance to make it two six minutes before half-time, blazing over the bar after brilliant work from Mandzukic to set him up.

Lyon finished the half strongly, with Rachid Ghezzal shooting just wide and then Maxime Gonalons following suit.

The visitors enjoyed good possession in the second half but an equaliser looked set to elude them until Marchisio gave away a free kick for bringing down Gonalons.

It needed to be a brilliant delivery from Ghezzal and it was, the Algerian winger's cross needing just a touch to guide it past Buffon, and it was Tolisso who obliged.

Juventus went in search of the winner they needed and Mandzukic headed wide deep into injury time.

Lyon then went down the other end and might have stolen it. Andrea Barzagli miscontrolled the ball on the halfway line but made up for it in brilliant style by sliding in to deny Alexander Lacazette as he lined up a shot.

The result, coupled with Sevilla's victory over Dinamo Zagreb, meant Juventus dropped to second in Group H, two points behind the Spaniards, with Lyon a further four points back.

Claudio Marchisio insists the 1-1 draw with Lyon was “a good result nonetheless,” but Juventus drop to second place in the Champions League group.

“It would’ve been decisive to bring home three points, but it is a good result nonetheless. It was important not to lose tonight against a strong opponent,” the midfielder told Mediaset Premium.

“A bit of fatigue can happen, as there are few options in attack, while Gonzalo (Higuain) and Mario (Mandzukic) had already given so much in recent games.

“We must try to bring these results home, because they are fundamental.”

Sevilla crushed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 and automatically qualify for the Round of 16, opening up a two-point lead at the top of the group.

Allegri: 'Juve not playing badly'
View Raw Image

http://www.football-italia.net/93836/allegri-juve-not-playing-badly?

Nov 2, 2016

Max Allegri tried to “see the positive side” of a 1-1 draw with Lyon and insisted Juventus “are not playing badly” in the Champions League.

Gonzalo Higuain’s penalty had opened the scoring, but late on Corentino Tolisso was allowed a free header on a set play and Alexandre Lacazette threatened a winner in stoppages.

Sevilla crushed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 and are now two points clear at the top of the group.

“We are still in the running for first place in the group. We needed to allow fewer counter-attacks and control the ball better, but in Europe that is always difficult,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We weren’t going to win the Champions League tonight, nor in the next game, as this tournament is won from March onwards. It is a journey, just like in Serie A.

“Tonight after the 1-1 we shouldn’t have run any more risks at the back, and yet that’s what happened. At the end of the day, we have to see the positive side.

“We tried to force the passes when they were in midfield. We should’ve preserved physical and psychological energy instead. We risked compromising everything in the last 10 minutes.”

Once again, the partnership of Mario Mandzukic and Higuain did not seem to work, while Miralem Pjanic was used in a new trequartista role.

“Mario worked very hard, Gonzalo goes between the lines, as those are his characteristics. At the moment they are my only options and they are giving their best. Tonight’s result was not down to them.

“Pjanic did well in the first half and moved between the lines. He has played many games recently and it wasn’t easy for him tonight.

“At the start of the match we did well. In the second half we were controlling it, then ran too many risks. At this moment I am purely interested in the results, even if it’s not true to say we are playing badly. It’s impossible to have 27 points when playing that badly.

“It all went wrong after Lyon equalised. We risked on a long ball and that should not be happening, because qualification is at stake here.”

Lyon goalscorer Corentino Tolisso felt they “played on a par with Juventus and qualification is still possible” for the Champions League knockouts.

His free header on a set play five minutes from time cancelled out the Gonzalo Higuain penalty for a 1-1 draw in Turin.

“All things considered, it was positive to get a point here,” Tolisso told Canal+.

“Qualification is still possible. We would’ve loved to have won this match, but we must build on what we’ve achieved and it bodes well for the future.

“Tonight we played on a par with Juventus and were not out-played at all. This is a great team with lots of experience, so we can be happy with that.

“I managed to put a goal past Gigi Buffon, so of course I’m happy.”

Pjanic stations! Bosnian fails No.10 audition as

Juventus' Champions League limitations are exposed

Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Lyon underlined that the Bianconeri won't have

any chance of winning the Champions League if they don't sort their midfield out.

"It doesn't worry me at all that people say Juventus aren't playing well and winning," coach Massimiliano Allegri insisted a fortnight ago.

"I don't know what 'playing well' means, anyway. What matters is the result. People remember who wins titles and not who plays 'well' or not."

That may be true of some football followers but what is beyond dispute is that Juventus are not presently playing well enough to be considered serious Champions League challengers. Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Lyon was further evidence of that fact.

corentin-tolisso-juventus-lyon_1u3r3ke3w

Going into the game in Turin, the Old Lady appeared to be in rude health - but looks can be deceiving. Saturday's win over Napoli had helped them open up a four-point lead at the summit of Serie A, while the Bianconeri knew that another victory over Lyon, whom they had defeated in France on matchday three with just 10 men, would seal a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with two group games to spare.

However, despite being gifted a goal by their Ligue 1 opponents, with Mouctar Diakhaby naively and needlessly pushing over Stefano Sturaro in the area 13 minutes in, Juventus never impressed.

It had been hoped that a switch to 4-3-1-2 might bring some much-needed creativity to a midfield that has looked worryingly bereft of ideas this term by allowing the struggling Miralem Pjanic to move forward into the trequartista role. The Bosnian began brightly, very nearly breaking the offside trap just over 90 seconds into the game, but that was as good as it got for the ex-Lyon man.

gonzalo-higuain-juventus-lyon_801uq3x9w1

Gonzalo Higuain, meanwhile, racked up his ninth goal in 15 appearances in all competitions for Juve since his summer switch by converting from the penalty spot but the Argentine squandered a glorious chance to double Juve's lead midway through the first half.

Higuain is good - but the question is still being asked: is he good enough to win Juve the Champions League?

The 28-year-old will get more chances to prove his worth to the Bianconeri but perhaps not as many as he would have expected when he first touched down in Turin because the truth of the matter is that Juve still look imbalanced in midfield.

Allegri's decision to change formation - which was, admittedly, somewhat motivated by the loss of a member of his brilliant back three in Giorgio Chiellini - simply did not work, with the Italian champions looking as muddled as ever in midfield. More players, more problems.

Furthermore, the switch also stripped the side of its usual attacking threat out wide, meaning Higuain and Mario Mandzukic didn't even have any decent crosses with which to work.

gonzalo-higuain-corentin-tolisso-juventu

Indeed, it was significant that the best chance Juve created from open play came from a mistake, with Emanuel Mammana getting caught in possession by Mandzukic, who then teed Higuain up for a sitter that his strike partner inexplicably skied over the bar.

It was a crucial miss, too, as Corentin Tolisso's late - but thoroughly deserved - leveller, coupled with Sevilla's resounding win over Dinamo Zagreb, means that Juve are now two points behind the Rojiblancos with two rounds remaining and, thus, once again in serious danger of failing to progress in first place from a group of which they initially appeared to have complete control.

Last year, their inability to win in Seville resulted in them being paired with Bayern Munich in the last 16. Juve played well against the Bavarians but they went out and, as Allegri would no doubt argue, the result is all that matters. If they are to avoid suffering a similar fate this season, he will need to resolve their outstanding midfield issues before they visit the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan again in three weeks' time.

Allegri 'angry' but content with Juve position

The head coach believes the Old Lady are still in a good position to qualify

but was left frustrated with his side's latest showing.

Nov 2, 2016

Massimiliano Allegri was left "angry" that Juventus almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Lyon, but is confident his side are on track to make the Champions League knockout stages.

The Serie A champions headed into the contest at Juventus Stadium knowing a win would be enough to qualify from Group H for the last 16.

Gonzalo Higuain's first-half penalty set Juve on their way and the Argentina striker missed another golden opportunity shortly before the break.

However, Juve were off colour in the second half and Corentin Tolisso made them pay with a late header that earned a 1-1 draw, before Alexandre Lacazette almost stole all three points for Lyon in injury time.

Allegri stormed down the tunnel at the final whistle and told reporters: "I was only angry when we gave them that big chance in the very last minute.

"The positive thing is that our objective is to qualify and I think we are still in a good position to do so.

"After the 1-1 we shouldn't have run any more risks at the back, and yet that's what happened. "At the end of the day, we have to see the positive side. We weren't going to win the Champions League tonight, nor in the next game, as this tournament is won from March onwards. It is a journey, just like in Serie A.

"We played a good first half, we risked too much in the second but it's normal because we have played many important games in quick succession with several players out."

Allegri persisted with Higuain and Mario Mandzukic up front in the continued absence of Paulo Dybala and the head coach was happy with the efforts of his strikers.

"Mario worked very hard, Gonzalo goes between the lines, as those are his characteristics," he added.

"At the moment they are my only options and they are giving their best. The result was not down to them."

Evra: 'Juve lacked character'

Nov 2, 2016

Patrice Evra admits Juventus “lacked character” in a 1-1 Champions League draw with Lyon. “Fatigue and other issues are just excuses.”

Gonzalo Higuain’s penalty had put them in control, but the defence switched off on a free kick for Corentin Tolisso’s equaliser five minutes from time.

“When you concede a goal, there is always a mistake somewhere,” Evra told Mediaset Premium.

“For me that wasn’t the real issue, as considering their performance the goal could’ve arrived at any moment. It’s a shame that in the last 20 minutes we lacked character and lost confidence, but that is the truth.

“Fatigue and other issues are just excuses, we have to be honest. We are a team that has faith in our abilities, but at that moment we went too deep and lost control of the game.

“We are all angry. We had to win today to qualify automatically, now we have to go and fight for the result in Sevilla. It’s a tough moment, but not the end of the world.

“I am angry at the way we failed to control the game, but it’s not as if I’ll have sleepless nights over it. If I didn’t have faith in this team, I’d ask the Coach not to be play me anymore!”

Bruno Genesio ended up with regrets in Turin, as Lyon “had the opportunity to get all three points” against Juventus.

The Champions League tie ended 1-1 as Corentin Tolisso cancelled out a Gonzalo Higuain penalty late on, but Alexandre Lacazette spurned a chance to win it on the counter.

“Juventus are stronger because they have so much experience, more so than Sevilla, even if they struggled against us this evening,” said the Lyon Coach in his Press conference.

“I am satisfied with the performance, even if it remains very difficult for us to qualify. We had the opportunity to get all three points tonight.

“It makes me very proud to see two young centre-backs hold out so well against these quality strikers. Gigi Buffon probably has more experience than my entire line-up put together.

“Rachid Ghezzal lost the ball a bit too often in the first half, but he brings solidity to the midfield. This result is a real boost for our confidence.”

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri stomped off the field in a fit of anger immediately after the final whistle, but appeared much calmer at the post-match press conference a few minutes later.

The hosts drew 1-1 with Lyon on Matchday 4 of the Champions League after relinquishing an early lead and spurning chances to go two up.

After the game, Allegri clarified that he was only mad that after the equalizer the Bianconeri had almost thrown the game away -

"I was only angry when we gave them that big chance in the very last minute.

"After the 1-1 we shouldn't have run any more risks at the back, and yet that's what happened.

“We tried to force the passes when they were in midfield. We should’ve preserved physical and psychological energy instead. We risked compromising everything in the last 10 minutes.”

He maintained that he was trying to stay optimistic despite the setback which means they are two points behind Sevilla, with a trip to Spain still to come.

On the new 4-3-1-2 formation with Miralem Pjanic as the trequartista behind the attacking pair of Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Mandzukic -

Nov 3, 2016

Juventus came into the game in buoyant mood after Saturday’s hard-fought 2-1 victory against close rivals Napoli. The hosts were fully aware that victory would guarantee a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League for the third consecutive season, so coach Max Allegri sprung a curious surprise for the starting-lineup: the resurrection of the 4-3-1-2 and Miralem Pjanic reclaimed his beloved trequartista position for the first time in Bianconeri colors.

Despite the excitement over the new formation, however, it was Lyon that had the first sight on goal. Alexandre Lacazette, looking to put his woes from the first game behind him, played a neat through-ball into Maciej Rybus after Lyon overloaded the left wing but Buffon neatly saved the Polish international’s subsequent shot. Juventus responded with a good chance of their own as Leonardo Bonucci launched a trademark inch-perfect pass to Gonzalo Higuaín who laid the ball off to his strike partner Mario Mandzukic. The Croatian striker tested Anthony Lopes with a stinging drive, but the Lyon goalkeeper managed to keep hold of the ball and prevent the opening goal.

The opener came soon after, though, as Higuaín spotted Stefano Sturaro’s smart run in behind the defense and played the ball to the Italian midfielder. Sturaro was judged to have been pushed over the young Mouctar Diakhaby in the box and the penalty was awarded to the Bianconeri. Higuaín stepped up to confidently slot the ball into the back of the net to give the hosts the lead!

The goal really put Juventus in their swagger and the momentum was well on their side with the home crowd cheering in full voice. They dominated possession and attacking play as Lyon struggled to cope with the occasion. Claudio Marchisio almost scored the second goal soon afterwards after a lovely passing interplay by the Bianconeri. Patrice Evra’s cross was cleared to the edge of the box but Sturaro picked up the loose ball and flicked it on to Marchisio, whose stinging half-volley kissed the post on its way wide. The Bianconeri had another gilt-edged chance minutes later after Mario Mandzukic’s defensive hassling forced Lyon defender Emanuel Mammana into a costly error. The Croatian fed the ball into Higuían, but, as the ball was slightly behind him, the Argentine couldn’t quite get his balance right and skied the shot well over the bar.

For some bewildering reason, though, Juventus completely eased off the pressure in the closing stages of the half which Lyon to take control of proceedings and force two chances: a Rachid Ghezzal shot that went about a meter wide and a Maxime Gonalons header from a corner. The first half ended with Juventus in the lead after dominating the first 25 minutes of the half, but complacently easing off to allow Lyon back into their stride.

The home side started the second half looking to calm the tempo of the game and play steady possession football. The first chance, however, came very quickly: Bonucci played another impeccable ball over the top to Pjanic who cushioned a header to Mandzukic, but the striker sliced a poor shot well wide of goal. Soon afterwards, the customary injury curse hit the squad once again: Bonucci and Pjanic picked up niggling injuries and had to be replaced by Benatia and Sandro respectively, prompting a return to the 3-5-2 formation. The latter made an instant impact by bamboozling two Lyon defenders and laying the ball off to Higuaín, whose subsequent shot was well saved by Lopes. Lyon, however, were well on the ascendancy from the 70th minute onwards. The first sign of this came from Sturaro being frightened by his own shadow losing the ball in midfield which resulted in a Lyon counter but substitute Cornet couldn’t capitalize on it after shooting wildly over the bar. Lyon’s dominance (and Juventus’ laziness) finally paid dividends as they scored the all-important equalizer. Standout player Ghezzal floated in the free-kick and Corentin Tolisso, one of two players totally free in the box, nodded in the header past Buffon to give the visitors a deserved equalizer.

Juventus were misplacing pass after pass and it was no wonder to see them punished by a resolute Lyon side. The visitors were going for the kill and continued to push forward for a goal but couldn’t fashion any clear-cut chances. Just when the final whistle was about to blow, the usually-flawless Andrea Barzagli made an absolutely dreadful error to allow Lacazette through on goal on his own, but the defender recovered enough to force the Frenchman into a difficult angle such that he could only fire into the side-netting. Juventus fans could breathe again after escaping from an almost disastrous ending to the game, but the anger and discontent was palpable all throughout the stadium after this inexplicable implosion. What seemed like a relatively straightforward victory ended in a fortunate 1-1 draw.

LE PAGELLE

BUFFON 6.5 – Couldn’t do much about the goal. Very smart save in the 8th minute from Rybus’s shot.

BARZAGLI 5.5 – His yellow card was totally unnecessary and then succumbed to a woeful error at the death.

BONUCCI 6.5 – Hit some fantastic balls over the top and was generally one of the better performers on the night.

EVRA 5 – Wasn’t quite “loving this game” so much, as he likes to say. Had a difficult time containing Ghezzal, who was probably my man of the match on the night.

DANI ALVES 6 – Played alright, but his performance dropped off after his cheekbone grew to the size of a baseball.

KHEDIRA 5.5 –He’s a player that’s generally invisible because he does the dirty work in midfield, which is good and bad I suppose. In this case, it wasn’t particularly useful.

Pjanic’s passing statistics are more resemblant of a central midfielder than a trequartista. He created only one chance...
Statszone by Opta

PJANIC 5.5 – He dropped deep a lot to pick up the ball but contributed very little creatively. His poor form is extremely worrying…

MARCHISIO 6.5 – Tidy display and good passing as he feels his way back into match fitness after his injury.

STURARO 6 – Started brightly but faded badly as the entire side slumped dramatically in the second half.

HIGUAÍN 6 – The penalty was well-taken but he skied that golden chance in the first half and had a few misplaced passes in the first half. Despite that, he contributed decently in the buildup play.

MANDZUKIC 5.5 – He also looked off-color after his knock at the end of the first half. Contributed defensively but, once again, offensively he’s very poor.

Subs

BENATIA 6.5 – Didn’t do much wrong in his brief 20-minute cameo.

SANDRO 7 – Added a breath of fresh air into the side. It’s amazing that, with Dybala injured, he’s the currently brightest spark in the team.

CUADRADO N/A – Played for 7 minutes. As a sidenote, he always looks so confused when he’s playing centrally which is so strange given all the time he played that position for Fiorentina.

Manager

ALLEGRI 5 – Totally botched up the midfield battle. Lyon were playing a totally straightforward 4-4-2 formation, so it’s shocking how little Allegri managed to exploit the numerical advantage in central midfield. The first half was, at best, narrowly acceptable but the second half was an embarrassment. His use of Pjanic is, once again, also very confusing (discussed further below).

Tactics: Everywhere but nowhere

Lyon played a very basic 4-4-2 formation, although Fekir dropped off Lacazette once in while to make it a quasi 4-4-1-1 in attack. Nevertheless, there was little tactical novelty to their play: the full-backs bombed forward (which was especially noticeable due to Juventus’ narrow midfield formation), the wingers hugged the touchline and stretched the play, and the strikers looked to exchange quick passes with each other. Given that Allegri started with a surprising 4-3-1-2 formation, I decided to focus on that and, the main man this formation, Miralem Pjanic:

Here the Bosnian (circled) is on the ball in a very deep, central position but not in a position to threaten the play. There areat least 6 Lyon players between him and the goal here

Lyon were happy to have Pjanic play in front of them instead of behind them, especially as they had such a numerical disadvantage in the center of the pitch. Juventus (and Pjanic) made almost no use of this strength though, aside from a few cute passing exchanges in the first half.

Pjanic did sometimes wander into his customary trequartista position, when one of Tolisso or Gonalons had stepped up and left space in behind

Pjanic spent most of the game wandering around in deep positions. He aided the buildup play a lot, but it felt like he was trying too much to do everything: to come deep to help Marchisio, but then run all the way forward to link up with the strikers as well. By trying to do everything, he eventually did nothing really and Allegri has to take the blame for how he instructed the Bosnian to play. As much as I tried to focus on Pjanic, there was little to see as he labored through a difficult performance.

We can see a clear, simple 4-4-2 by Lyon here yet Pjanic (on the ball, underlined) is the one starting the play from deep

He just did not have a defined role. Was he supposed to start attacks from deep and allow Khedira to run in behind him? Was he supposed to overload the center of midfield and play between the lines? Did he want to draw Tolisso and Gonalons out of position to create a hole in the center to exploit? I have truly no idea. Lyon could allow him to play in front of instead of through them, which they were comfortable doing. All in all, an unspectacular tactical battle that resulted in an unspectacular performance by the home side. Dire stuff...

The architects of our own destruction

As a writer for the blog, I generally have to maintain a degree of level-headedness and leniency in my match assessments because writing emotionally-charged articles would be a bad endorsement for the blog. Make no mistake about tonight though: this was a deplorable performance. We were playing in front of our home crowd, had secured a solid, early lead, and faced a timid Lyon side playing an uncreative 4-4-2 formation. Yet somehow the team fell apart in utterly abject, depressing, and infuriating fashion. There are all kinds of problems that need to be fixed and a potential Axel Witsel signing in the January transfer window will absolutely not solve them. It’s certainly time for some deep soul-searching, because slowly but surely this team is losing control…

You fall asleep at night with worry

Juventus' Negativity Once Again

Proves Costly in Champions League

Everything was there for the taking. As they prepared to take on Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night, Juventus knew a victory would secure their place in the knockout stages of this season’s UEFA Champions League.

Furthermore, it would put them in control of the group and closer to that all-important first-place finish. The Bianconeri fully understood the importance of that, last year’s runner-up spot seeing them drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16.

Keen to avoid a repeat, coach Massimiliano Allegri selected an extremely strong starting XI, switching to a four-man defence and including Miralem Pjanic behind his front two of Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain.

They dominated the early stages, earning the breakthrough when Lyon gave away an entirely avoidable penalty. Higuain drove forward with the ball before making a neat pass to Stefano Sturaro, who was barged over clumsily in the box by Mouctar Diakhaby.

Higuain gave Juve the lead from the penalty spot.

The Argentina international stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick, putting Juventus into a lead they looked set to protect with ease. He should have doubled the advantage just five minutes before half-time, Mandzukic robbing the ball from Lyon and rolling it to Higuain, who somehow blazed his left-footed shot over the bar.

Given his deadly accuracy in front of goal over the past 18 months, the miss was astonishing, but the Bianconeri still seemed on course for victory. However, as the second half unfolded, Allergri made a series of baffling decisions that ultimately saw his side throw away two points.

A double substitution in the 67th minute was somewhat forced upon him, Leonardo Bonucci needing to go off with a thigh injury. Replacing him with Medhi Benatia was no problem, but the coach also opted to bring on Alex Sandro in place of Pjanic and reverted to the usual 3-5-2 formation.

Allegri made a series of bafflingly negative decisions.

The Brazilian wing-back almost made an immediate impact, tearing down the left flank and creating a chance for Higuain, but his shot was deflected harmlessly wide. Andrea Barzagli was then called upon to make two crucial blocks, doing so with the same immaculate timing that has become a hallmark of his Juve career.

But the home side would not hold out. A deep free-kick from Rachid Ghezzal saw three Lyon players lining up to finish the chance, Corentin Tolisso getting there first to head past a helpless Gigi Buffon.

It was, as Opta noted below, the first goal the Bianconeri have conceded in the Champions League this term, their excellent defence unable to secure a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

32 - First goal conceded by Juventus in this #UCL, with the 32nd shot faced by the Bianconeri in the competition. Equaliser. #JuveOL

From there, Lyon seemed more likely to win the match, and Buffon needed to deny Alexandre Lacazette in stoppage time after the striker had sprinted past Barzagli. Speaking at his post-match press conference, Allegri hinted at the negative approach that almost saw his side lose a match they should have comfortably won:

We played well in the first half but we sat back too much after the break. Lyon came into it more as we dropped off. We tried to force things too much. We shouldn't have done that because the aim was to come away with the win.

We wouldn't have had those problems if we'd been a bit tidier at the back. We were controlling the game well but then we conceded the goal and let them have a number of counter-attacks. That's something we must work on.

Undoubtedly the most disappointing part of that is the coach's recognition that the team "dropped off" given it was his tactical changes that prompted the players to change their mindset.

Allegri on Moise Kean who is called up to tonight's match "He may get a piece of the match."

Allegri had the weapons to maintain the pressure on Lyon at his disposal—the likes of Sandro, Juan Cuadrado, Hernanes and Moise Kean all in reserve—but also withdrew Higuain as the clock wound down.

The latter of that quartet is the most promising youngster to emerge from the club’s youth setup in years, yet for the sixth consecutive match, the 16-year-old remained an unused substitute.

His quality was discussed at length in this previous post, but there is little point continually including him in the matchday squad if he merely gets to watch the action. He deserves an opportunity, and Allegri must be bold enough to maintain the pressure when Juventus are playing so dominantly.

Morata was key to Juve’s previous European successes.

The Champions League rewards bravery, as the Juve boss should know all too well. In guiding the side to the final in 2014/15, he dropped Fernando Llorente in favour of Alvaro Morata and moved away from the three-man defence that had long been a feature of this team.

With the younger striker’s pace alongside Carlos Tevez, the Bianconeri were a dangerous counter-attacking side, and the Old Lady has similar talents in her current squad, yet the coach continues to overlook them or negate their potential impact.

Juve have the weapons to carve open defences such as Lyon's, as Cuadrado proved in the first leg, yet Allegri opted to holster his big guns and hope for the best. The Bianconeri play Chievo on Sunday. Was he really taking out Pjanic and Higuain to rest them for the trip to Verona at the expense of Champions League progression?

hi-res-a5f386724df6ff997bad08b5379839c1_

Laurent Cipriani/Associated Press
Cuadrado can be a difference-maker.

With Sevilla once again handily dispatching Dinamo Zagreb, the Italian champions need to go to Spain and defeat a team in the ascendancy. If that sounds familiar, it is because just 12 months ago, the Bianconeri—having twice defeated Manchester City—headed to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium needing a result to top their group.

They lost 1-0, with Llorente ironically netting the only goal of the game. It is a position Juventus should not be in again, but they have only themselves to blame. As he left the field on Wednesday evening, Patrice Evra was visibly angry, making his feelings clear as he spoke to Mediaset Premium.

"It’s a shame that in the last 20 minutes we lacked character and lost confidence, but that is the truth," the Frenchman said (h/t Football Italia). "Fatigue and other issues are just excuses. We have to be honest. We are a team that has faith in our abilities, but at that moment, we went too deep and lost control of the game."

.@Evra: "This isn't the result we wanted. There can be no excuses. We now pick ourselves up and go for the win in Sevilla." #JuveOL #UCL

It is impossible to argue with his opinion. Yes, the squad might be missing one extra midfielder who could make the difference, but a failure to sign Axel Witsel or Blaise Matuidi this summer did not lead to this disappointing draw.

Responsibility for that rests with the coach and team, who should have taken all three points here and came close to doing so, only to collectively choke with the game on the line.

It has been 20 years since the Bianconeri could proclaim themselves champions of Europe, and if they approach the Champions League with this negative attitude, that long wait will only continue.

Bonucci doubtful for Chievo trip with thigh injury

Juventus could be without the Italy defender against Chievo on Sunday

after he suffered a thigh injury against Lyon in the Champions League.

Leonardo Bonucci is a doubt for Juventus' trip to Chievo this weekend after suffering the recurrence of a thigh injury, the Serie A leaders have confirmed.

Bonucci limped out of Juve's 1-1 draw with Lyon in the Champions League on Wednesday and underwent tests to ascertain the extent of his injury.

As Allegri's side prepare to visit Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi - a stadium where they have won seven of their last eight matches - on Sunday, Bonucci's fitness has become a major concern.

"Having been substituted in the second half of Wednesday's draw with Les Gones [Lyon], Leonardo Bonucci underwent tests which revealed a recurrence of an injury previously sustained to his left thigh," a club statement read.

"The defender's condition will be monitored closely again tomorrow."

Juventus continues to struggle in Europe after

raising Champions League objectives this summer

Juventus should probably play better on the European stage. Thanks for visiting

for this incredibly exclusive information that you will only find here at BWRAO.

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2016/11/4/13507124/juventus-2016-champions-league-struggles

Nov 4, 2016

In a lot of sports, no matter what country in which they are played, there are unwritten rules as to which teams abide by. Some of them make sense, others make you scratch your head. They’re real, they’re there and they’re pretty much the norm no matter if it’s football being played with a round ball or handegg.

Juventus’ unwritten rule is simple: Make things as difficult as they can be when taking part in a European competition. And not just that, it doesn’t matter who’s on the team or who’s managing them, it’s a constant issue that continues to rear its ugly head no matter who the opponent may be.

The heart of the matter is this: For the better part of the last four months we’ve heard about the priority that the Champions League is now taking in Juventus’ world. Is winning the Scudetto still important? Obviously, there’s no denying that because adding No. 35 and a record sixth straight Serie A title would continue what has been an incredible run. But there’s no way to avoid the fact that Juventus talked a big game this summer. They didn’t not shy away from speaking and bringing up their raised expectations — especially so when it comes to competing in Europe this season. And they worked the transfer market like a team with lofty goals, too.

 • Juventus spent €90 million on Gonzalo Higuain.
 • Juventus spent €32 million on Miralem Pjanic.
 • Juventus spent €23 million on Marko Pjaca.
 • Juventus signed Dani Alves, a player with massive Champions League experience, on a free transfer with a €3.5 million a season salary.

That’s €145 million-plus going out to other clubs, and that’s not even including player salariesoutside of what they’re spending on Alves. We haven’t seen Juventus spend that kind of money in ages. And the reasoning behind it was because this club wanted to take the next step and become truly competitive in Europe following five years of domestic domination.

But what does Juventus have to show for it? With two group stage games to go, they’re sitting two points behind Sevilla and not exactly inspiring a lot of confidence when it comes to the preseason declarations of serious European intentions. Juve have drawn both of their home fixtures at Juventus Stadium in this season’s group stage. That’s happened in years past, too.

As much as dropping points at home is the frustrating part, the thing that is still stinging is the fact that with a 1-0 lead, at home, with the top spot in the group still very much up for grabs, Juventus’ mindset was to try and cruise their way to a win rather than pushing forward and adding to the lead they had grabbed not even 12 minutes into Wednesday night’s match. In a shorter way of saying it, they got the lead and then were extremely negative. No putting Lyon away. Nothing close to it, really.

That guy has a point, you know.

Would a win over Sevilla solve some of the ills of the previous group-stage frustrations? Of course, mainly because it means Juve are atop the group with one more game to go. (That game, against Dinamo Zagreb, is in Turin, by the way.)

But Juventus, in their own way, put the target on their back weeks before the draw against Lyon on Wednesday night. They raised the bar themselves. They created the level of expectation by who they signed and what they said.

“Being one of the frontrunners in Europe naturally sets you up for a greater fall and more criticism as well as forcing other teams to approach matches against you with a different mindset but we musn’t worry about living up to that status and instead relish the challenges it brings.”

— Juventus director general Beppe Marotta on Sept. 15, 2016
