Alex Sandro: ‘Torino game is special’

http://www.football-italia.net/81517/alex-sandro-%E2%80%98torino-game-special%E2%80%99?

Mar 18, 2016

Juventus full-back Alex Sandro looks forward to the Derby della Mole with Torino - “a very special game”.

The Bianconeri were knocked-out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in midweek, and now turn their attentions to their pursuit of a fifth-consecutive Serie A title.

“I expect a very difficult match, as they all are in the Italian League,” Alex Sandro told JTV.

“It’s also a ‘clasico’, a very special game for the fans and four us players who feel the importance of it throughout the week, not just in the 90 minutes.

“What’s important is the three points though, we must have the determination to win them. I was happy with my assist for [Juan] Cuadrado in the first game, but we all have to be decisive on Sunday.

“Gigi Buffon’s potential record? Hopefully we won’t concede, not just in the first few minutes [buffon will break the clean sheet record if he doesn’t concede in the first three], but for the whole game.”

Coach Massimiliano Allegri is believed to be close to agreeing a contract renewal in Turin, and the Brazilian defender praised the tactician.

“He’s a Coach whop demands the best from everyone, and that’s how he makes us grow more and more.

“Wearing the Juventus shirt means carrying a symbol which is known around the world. It’s an important shirt, and it’s a privilege to wear it and represent all the fans on the pitch.

“I’m learning so much at Juve, this season is very important for me.”

Torino V Juventus – Preview: Bianconeri Scudetto Path
Crosses Desperate Granata’s Attempts To Save Their Season

It’s the Derby della Mole in Turin as Juventus face Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon in Serie A, looking to continue their pursuit of the Scudetto.

The Bianconeri started their 19 game unbeaten streak – of which 18 have been victories – with a late winner against Torino, and after being knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, are looking to get quickly back to winning ways.

The Granata on the other hand are facing one of the lowest moments of their recent seasons, having won just twice in 2016, with five losses and five draws. The most recent one is a painful 3-2 defeat in Genoa, after being 0-2 up. Giampiero Ventura is undergoing criticism by fans and media, and needs a win in the Derby to make everyone happy.

The last time the two teams faced each other in Serie A, a 90th minute Juan Cuadrado tap in gave Juve an unexpected win. More recently, the Bianconeri thrashed their cousins 4-0 in the Coppa Italia, both games being played at the Juventus Stadium. The last encounter at the Olimpico ended with Toro’s 2-1 win last season, interrupting a period of 20 years without winning against the rivals, thanks to goals by Fabio Quagliarella and Matteo Darmian.

Both match winners have left Torino since, but Ventura will be confident to deploy a competitive side, trying to make the most of Ciro Immobile’s great form, after scoring two last week. Alessandro Gazzi is out through injury, as well as Danilo Avelar, unavailable for the rest of this season. Otherwise, Ventura has is preferred 3-5-2 formation, with Andrea Belotti the other striker and Marco Benassi likely to start ahead of Daniele Baselli in the middle.

Massimiliano Allegri will still have to deal with the absences of Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio and Paulo Dybala, just like in the Champions League. Against Bayern Munich, Alvaro Morata was fantastic, and he is likely to start again, alongside Mario Mandzukic up front. Hernanes is likely to continue replacing Marchisio, whilst Daniele Rugani could have a chance to play at the back.

Form Guide: Torino (D-L-D-W-L) Juventus (W-D-W-W-W)

Expected Starting XIs

Torino (3-5-2)

Padelli; Maksimovic, Glik, Moretti; Peres, Acquah, Vives, Benassi, Zappacosta; Belotti, Immobile

Juventus (3-5-2)

Buffon; Rugani, Bonucci, Barzagli; Cuadrado, Khedira, Hernanes, Pogba, Alex Sandro; Mandzukic, Morata

Torino V Juventus: Derby Della Mole
Revives The Spirit Of Turin

As Turin’s two sides prepare to lock horns in round 30 of Serie A,
Nicholas Carroll takes a look at the history of the Derby della Mole.

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2016/03/torino-v-juventus-derby-della-mole-revives-the-spirit-of-turin/?

Mar 18, 2016

In 1863, the construction of a synagogue began with the aim of providing Turin a building worthy of its new-found status as the Italian capital; this would be named the Mole Antonelliana.

Despite Turin losing its standing as the capital in 1864, the Mole Antonelliana has since stood tall as a strong symbol at the heart of the city.

It would eventually lend its name to the meeting between the city’s two premier football clubs, Juventus and Torino – who would establish the Derby della Mole.

The first meeting between the clubs took place over 109 years ago on January 13, 1907. A tense rivalry existed even before the very first ball was kicked, given Torino had been formed by a breakaway group from Juventus who had joined forces with the local Football Club Torinese.

For many decades, Juventus would represent the wealthy citizens of the city, falling under the control of the Agnelli family, while Torino would represent the working class community.

Though, despite their differences in class stature and shirt colours, one element both clubs would share was the image of a raging bull emblazoned on their emblems.

The bull stands tall on Turin’s coat of arms as a representation of the city’s fighting spirit, which has been integrated into both clubs’ histories.

Of course, since that first meeting in 1907, the clubs have taken significantly different paths and enjoyed varied periods of success.

Five of the Toro’s seven Serie A titles were won in consecutive years between 1942 and 1949 by the team widely referred to as ‘Grande Torino’. The team would be tragically lost in May of 1949 as a result of a plane crash en route home from Lisbon, marking a heartbreaking decline in the club’s fortunes.

Whereas the Bianconeri have endured many successful eras as Italy’s most accomplished club, winning multiple Serie A titles in every decade since the 1950’s.

Despite their enviable and long-running success, Juve have generally faced a tough challenge in the Derby della Mole.

However, times have been tough for the Granata in recent decades, often finding themselves bouncing between the top two flights of Italian football.

In fact, Torino’s 2-1 win over their rivals in April last year was their first derby victory in over 20 years. Not since April 1995, thanks to a Ruggiero Rizzitelli double, had they previously tasted victory over the Old Lady.

Even so, Torino have still managed a respectable 56 wins from 190 official derbies, with 54 ending in a draw and 80 going the way of the Bianconeri.

Though as Torino continue their re-emergence as a solid Serie A club, the thrill of the derby is beginning to find it’s rightful place back in Italian football.

While it may not have the international appeal of an El Clasico or play a vital role in deciding the Scudetto, the Derby della Mole exists as one of the oldest and culturally significant football traditions in the world.

And every time the clubs face-off, they do so with the knowledge that in spite of their varied paths and trophy cabinets, they both evolved from the very same point and were both born out of the spirit of Turin.

While the scoreline will grab the headlines on Monday morning, it is the passion that defines each and every derby with both sets of fans congregating to celebrate the history that their clubs represent.

And irrelevant of the final score, each derby ends the same way. With the Mole Antonelliana standing tall above the Turin skyline, as a symbol of the city’s historical significance which both clubs have now become intrinsically intertwined with.

TORINO VS JUVENTUS MATCH PREVIEW

The elimination from the Champions League was a tough pill to swallow for a number of reasons that The Gutter Poet already masterfully listed on his match review. Sleeping was certainly difficult on Wednesday, but there are a couple of motives for optimism. Despite being bounced early from the competition, Juventus established themselves in the top echelon of European football, and that was not a given, considering the massive turnover this summer and the unquestionable stature of the players that left. I think the management is on the right track and we simply need to add more quality throughout the roster: we have seen that technical players like Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala, Alvaro Morata and Alex Sandro make the difference and we need to continue bringing in that kind of talent.

There is no time to dwell in sadness or for the ‘should-have, could-have and would-have’ mentality – The Derby della Mole is quickly approaching and will be a crucial test for the title hopes. The silver lining for being knocked out at the round of 16 is that you no longer have to constantly deal with three games in seven days. With a full week to prepare for every match and with a lessened physical toll, running the table is feasible. All in all, Juventus already had one 15-game winning streak this season.

Claudio Marchisio is definitely out after suffering a calf strain on Monday and it looks like Giorgio Chiellini will be sidelined with a sore calf as well. I am starting to think that he may have suffered a strain that the club did not disclose: he last played on February 28 and a three-week absence seems a little long for some simple soreness, albeit in a delicate and oft-injured muscle. Keeping him out would also sort of make him ineligible for the national team call-up.

There is little hope that Paulo Dybala will be able to play after missing the Bayern clash with an edema in his calf. Mario Mandzukic played on Wednesday despite having a sore groin: the reports say that he could be in the starting XI so it means that the pain is hopefully subsiding. While still an important match, Torino-Juventus does not have the same magnitude of a Champions League game so there is no need to risk a long-term injury, it is not a do-or-die game. Therefore, Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza are the favourites to start.

I don’t think we will see the surprisingly effective 5-4-1 we used on Wednesday anytime soon, but it could be a nice tool in end-of-games situations. Unleashing Pogba by putting him on the flank to control Philippe Lahm, who rarely attacked in the first half, was a genius move and swung the bout. 3-5-2 is the designated tactic for this one, with Daniele Rugani in Chiellini’s spot. It is possible that Massimiliano Allegri will field the Juan Cuadrado-Alex Sandro combination that brings the scheme to a different level, also adding some pace and unpredictability would make sense without Dybala.

There are some doubts in the midfield: Hernanes did not have a good game in Bavaria, so Mario Lemina could replace him in the heart of the midfield. Sami Khedira rarely plays thrice in a week, but the options are aplenty, with Stefano Sturaro, Roberto Pereyra and Kwadwo Asamoah all healthy.

Gianluigi Buffon need four minutes to overtake Sebastiano Rossi and obtain the longest unbeaten streak in Serie A history: it would be a real bummer if he fell short. I wonder if he has any good luck rituals.

Probable lineup 3-5-2

Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Rugani; Cuadrado, Khedira, Hernanes, Pogba, Sandro; Morata, Zaza.

Injuries:

Marchisio (calf), Chiellini (calf), Caceres (Achilles).

Suspensions:

None.

torino.pngTorino

There is a weird atmosphere at Torino: the team has won only twice in 2016 and the fans are openly contesting the president Urbano Cairo and the coach Giampiero Ventura. The stadium might not even be sold out, which would be astounding, considering that this is their match of the year. Despite the three-year extension recently signed, the feeling is that this cycle is poised to end at the end of the season. If that will be the case, watch out for Ventura for the Italy job.

There is no denying that their season has been disappointing. After finishing in ninth position in 2014/2015, not too far away from a Europa League spot, the expectations were high, but the squad never really got it going this year. They’ve only won two games in a row only twice this season. They had a good start but then fell in a slump in November from which they never fully recovered. The January struggles then led to this inevitable falling-out.

It is hard to pinpoint the reasons why they play such a boring and ineffective brand of football after being pretty spry in the past seasons. The additions of young talents like Andrea Belotti, Daniele Baselli and Davide Zappacosta, along with retaining Marco Benassi, were impressive for a mid-table team. However, Baselli quickly flamed out after a scorching hot start, Belotti started to be a consistent threat only after being paired with another good striker, Ciro Immobile, who returned in January, and Zappacosta rarely cracked into the starting XI. Ventura does not like to play with both Benassi and Baselli at the same time, a sign that he may have lost his touch.

Danilo Avelar, who is lost for the season due to a torn ACL, is their only absentee as Cesare Bovo and Alessandro Gazzi have recovered from recent injuries. Therefore, the coach will be able to field whatever XI he prefers.

In their usual 3-5-2, the defence will be composed by Nikola Maksimovic, Kamil Glik and Emiliano Moretti. After being benched for two games, it looks like Baselli will regain the starting job at the expense of Benassi while Gazzi could replace the regular Giuseppe Vives as deep-lying playmaker. Afriyie Acquah will complete the midfield.

The coach has tried to put Bruno Peres, easily their best player, and Zappacosta on the pitch at the same time, adapting one of the two to the left flank, but it has not really worked out. Cristian Molinaro is likely to play as left wing back, with the Brazilian fullback on the other wing.

Belotti and Immobile will be the attacking duo. Despite Toro’s chronic problem of creating chances, the two strikers have combined for ten goals and six assists in the eleven games they played together. The pair brings to the table a nice mix of speed, physicality, passing and finishing skills, however the problem is that the team likes to sit back too much and rarely feeds them properly.

They come from four negative results in a row: a scoreless draw at home against Carpi, a loss at San Siro against Milan, a 1-1 in Turin against Lazio and a 3-2 defeat at the Marassi against Genoa where they were two-nil up after fifteen minutes. In their last 15 matches, they have won only against Palermo and Frosinone.

Probable lineup 3-5-2

Padelli; Maksimovic, Glik, Moretti; Bruno Peres, Acquah, Vives, Baselli, Molinaro; Belotti, Immobile.

Injuries:

Avelar (knee).

Suspensions:

None.

Pirlo: ‘Derby good for Juventus’

http://www.football-italia.net/81531/pirlo-%E2%80%98derby-good-juventus%E2%80%99?

Mar 19, 2016

Andrea Pirlo believes the Derby della Mole will “restore Juventus’ energy”, and laments “unfortunate” Serie A teams in Europe.

The Bianconeri were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday, going down 4-2 to Bayern Munich after extra time, with the last Italian side in Europe - Lazio - bowing out of the Europa League the next day.

“Having a big game like the Derby will restore Juventus’ energy,” Pirlo predicted on Sky ahead of tomorrow’s game with Torino.

“Italy was unfortunate in Europe, above all with Napoli and Fiorentina. It’s too bad for Juve, as the Bianconeri could have reached the final again this year.”

The veteran midfielder was part of the side which lost the showpiece to Barcelona in Berlin last season, but moved to MLS side New York City in the summer.

Sandro Calls On Juventus To Give
Their Best In The Derby Della Mole

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2016/03/sandro-calls-on-juventus-to-give-their-best-in-the-derby-della-mole/?

Mar 19, 2016

Juventus’ Alex Sandro is looking forward to taking on Torino on Sunday afternoon, as he is likely to be given a start in the Derby della Mole after featuring in the closing minutes of the last Serie A encounter between the two sides.

Despite coming on as a substitute after 87 minutes when the two Turin outfits met in late October, the full-back proved decisive when, deep into stoppage time, he fed Juan Cuadrado whose strike sealed a 2-1 victory for the Bianconeri, kicking off their 15-game winning streak.

“I expect a very tough game, just like all Serie A matches,” Sandro told Juventus TV.

“It will be a very special game for both the supporters and the players, and we want to win.

“I was very happy for my assist to Cuadrado during the last Derby, but we all have to make the difference on Sunday.”

In spite of coach Massimiliano Allegri’s initial choice to keep relying mainly on Patrice Evra when Alex Sandro first joined Juventus from Porto for €26 million, the Brazilian acknowledges that his boss played a key role in his growth.

“He [Allegri] demands the best from everyone and makes all us improve,” Sandro went on.

“When you put on the Juventus shirt you’re wearing a symbol known all over the world, it’s a privilege for me.

“I’m learning a lot here, this season is crucial to my growth.”

Torino v Juventus: Preview

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/italian-serie-a/match/431975/torino-juventus/preview

Mar 19, 2016

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci is confident his side can quickly recover from the heartache of their European exit as focus switches to Sunday's Turin derby and the quest for a fifth consecutive Serie A title.

Juve were on course for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they led 2-0 at Bayern Munich in midweek to open up a 4-2 advantage on aggregate in the Allianz Arena.

However, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller struck after the break to send the match into extra time, where Thiago Alcantara and Kingsley Coman earned the German side a 6-4 aggregate success.

Speaking to Sky Italia ahead of the derby clash with Torino, Bonucci said: ``Matches like that are always likely to swing on one single moment and that's what happened in Munich. In football, these things happen and you have to move on.

``It's important now that we keep focused on the improvements we've made recently on all fronts. The Juve of last season was one founded on experience but this one is built on genuine quality and we are only likely to grow further.''

After a stuttering start to their Serie A title defence, Juventus have now won 18 of their last 19 games in the league and are through to the Coppa Italia final against Milan in May.

``We've trained since the start of the season to be able to handle playing once every three days and that means having the necessary mental and physical reserves to bounce back after disappointments like Wednesday night's,'' Bonucci added.

``Our objective now is to first win the Scudetto and then head to Rome with another domestic double still on the cards.''

Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon can create history on Sunday after a 10th successive Serie A clean sheet against Sassuolo last week moved the 38-year-old to within four minutes of breaking Sebastiano Rossi's all-time record of 929 minutes without conceding a goal.

Torino have taken just two points from their last four matches to lie 13th in the table and squandered a two-goal lead at Genoa in a 3-2 defeat last week.

``Tomorrow only the result matters,'' Torino manager Giampiero Ventura told a pre-match press conference. ``We have to try to win it to the end. There is a great desire to play this match.''

Allegri: 'Juve-Bayern about details'

http://www.football-italia.net/81540/allegri-juve-bayern-about-details?

Mar 19, 2016

Max Allegri looks on the positive side of Juventus’ Champions League exit against Bayern Munich.

The Turin Derby kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

This is the first outing since Wednesday’s 4-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in extra time, a match they had been leading 2-0.

“Of course we watched the game back, because regardless of the result, we always work to improve our mistakes,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I don’t have regrets. In order to become great, you have to go through these moments. In order to be winning, you must do well to take the punches, resist and then react. It’s too easy if you’re the only one punching.

“Therefore tomorrow’s derby becomes more important and we want a strong reaction, not a tense or neurotic one.

“Disappointment is normal, especially after playing two games on the same level as Bayern Munich, but we are top of the Serie A table, in the Coppa Italia Final and have already won the Italian Super Cup.

“Going out to Bayern can happen, it was a tie decided by the tiniest incidents and moments of luck, so it should not affect the way we see the rest of our season. We proved ourselves at that level.

“The fact we went out with two draws against Bayern Munich, one of the favourites to win the Champions League, should fill us with pride, but then we are left with nothing in our hands. Details made the difference.”

Torino - Juventus MATCH PREVIEW

http://www.football-italia.net/SerieA/match/preview/70116

Mar 19, 2016

Torino’s Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti are sure to put Juventus’ record of consecutive Serie A clean sheets under threat in the Derby della Mole.

The Bianconeri will be aiming their all-time League record of 10 straight games without conceding a goal but the Granata strike pair will fancy their chances against a backline that eventually caved under prolonged pressure from Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Immobile and Belotti have respectively accounted for six and five of Torino’s last 14 goals scored.

However, Torino’s results have failed to align with the exploits of their front pair. Giampiero Ventura’s men have failed to win their last four games, with failure to seal all three points on Sunday meaning they would match their unwanted record from November 2013 if they fail to clinch victory against their local rivals.

In stark contrast are Massimiliano Allegri’s men, able to focus solely on the defence of their domestic crown for the first time. Beginning with the reverse fixture at Juventus Stadium, the Italian champions have picked up 55 out of a possible 57 points – by contrast, Torino have amassed only 18 points in the same timeframe.

Even without the services of top-scorer Paulo Dybala, the Bianconeri are unlikely to suffer untowardly. Should they find the lead through the likes of Alvaro Morata – who dazzled at Bayen – expect the title favourites to hold on to reclaim local bragging rights, especially as they have only surrendered two points from a winning position this season.

Keep an eye on: Ciro Immobile (Torino) – The Borussia Dortmund loanee has discovered a new lease of life since returning to his old stomping ground and will be eager to cement his resurgence in front of his former fans. A goal against his old club will do no harm in confirming the return to form of the former Serie A Capocannoniere.

Form guide: Torino (W D L D L) Juventus (W D W W W)

Last season: Torino 2-1 Juventus

Stat fact
: The last time Torino won two consecutive derbies at home against Juventus dated back to 1983.

Dybala back for Derby della Mole

http://www.football-italia.net/81542/dybala-back-derby-della-mole?

Mar 19, 2016

Paulo Dybala returns to the Juventus squad against Torino, but Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio are still out.

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

Dybala had been surprisingly left behind for Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Bayern Munich, but has recovered from his muscular problem.

This will fuel already existing doubts about whether Juve should’ve risked at least taking their top scorer to Germany.

Chiellini is still sidelined by a recurring calf injury, while Marchisio and long-term absentee Martin Caceres also miss out.

“Chiellini always has problems with his calf every year. Sometimes it takes five days to recover, others 20, so risking him on the eve of a break for international duty would be madness,” said Max Allegri.

“We will play with three defenders, yes. Paulo Dybala is available for selection. It was a physically tiring game against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, but others rested. More than physical, we need to recharge our psychological batteries.”

Juventus squad for Torino:

Buffon, Khedira, Zaza, Morata, Pogba, Hernanes, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Cuadrado, Mandzukic, Lemina, Bonucci, Padoin, Dybala, Asamoah, Rugani, Neto, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Evra, Rubinho, Pereyra

Ventura: 'Derby means more to Toro'

http://www.football-italia.net/81547/ventura-derby-means-more-toro?

Mar 19, 2016

Giampiero Ventura told Torino that against Juventus “it’s a derby and that means only winning counts.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

“I continue to believe that the performance is the main thing people should look at and if you play good football, the result will come,” noted the Coach in his Press conference.

“However, this is a derby and that means only winning counts. For once, the performance can come second to the result.

“We prepared this fixture well and are really eager to go out there and play with humility and determination.”

Will Juventus be more fired up or depressed at their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, 4-2 in extra time?

“Juve played at a very high level on Wednesday and I am sure we’ll meet a very angry side. We are Torino and it’d be great to see the Granata heart on that pitch. We must try to overturn every prediction and history tells us anything is possible.

“Earlier this season we deserved to win, but instead lost at the 94th minute. The crowd realised we had given it our all and at the end applauded.

“Torino lost the last few derbies with some refereeing decisions that went against us, but we didn’t kick up a fuss.

“We are fully aware that at times this season we haven’t played like Toro, but the Granata fans should be proud of what we’ve built over these years.

“It’s true Juventus can add three points for the Scudetto, but the game means more to us and victory would be intensely gratifying for our players who have worked so hard since the summer.”

Bonucci keen to deliver record for Buffon

The veteran shot-stopper can set a new record for minutes without conceding in Serie A
against Torino this weekend and his Italian team-mate is eager to make it happen.

Leonardo Bonucci is desperate to help Gianluigi Buffon make Serie A history when Juventus face off against Torino in the Turin derby.

The veteran goalkeeper will break Sebastiano Rossi's record of 929 minutes without conceding in Italy's top flight if he is not beaten during the first four minutes of the match.

Bonucci has hailed his team-mate as the best in his position that football has ever seen and wants to help him set a landmark which may never be beaten.

"We'll give everything to help Gigi achieve his record," he told Sky Italia ahead of the clash at Stadio Olimpico.

"He's the best goalkeeper in the history of the game and we want to aid him not only in surpassing it but also sustaining it beyond Sunday."

Juve were minutes away from knocking Bayern Munich out of the Champions League in midweek, only for Thomas Muller to make it 2-2 late in the second leg on Wednesday before Pep Guardiola's side scored twice more in extra-time to reach the quarter-finals.

Bonucci felt his side's performance should have been rewarded with a place in the last eight but believes the defeat will serve them well going forward.

"Our performance was one of a top team and based on that, we deserved to be in the last eight of the Champions League," he said. "Matches like that are always likely to swing on one single moment and that's what happened in Munich.

"It's important now that we keep focused on the improvements we've made recently on all fronts. The Juve of last season was one founded on experience and but this one is built on genuine quality and we are only likely to grow further.

"Losing was a tough blow to take but a necessary one for our development as a team. I was proud to be a Juventus player at full-time; even if we were eliminated, our attitude was first class.

"We'll tackle the derby with the same hunger that has set us apart from the chasing pack in the last four years. On Sunday, we will need to put our pride on the shelf, start afresh and prove that we have learnt from our mistakes by putting in a strong showing at the Olimpico.

"In a way we are fortunate to have this chance to bounce back against Torino of all teams as it was the derby in October that set us off on this magnificent league run in the first place."

Immobile: 'Toro spoil Buffon record'

http://www.football-italia.net/81576/immobile-toro-spoil-buffon-record?

Mar 20, 2016

Ciro Immobile will try to ruin Gigi Buffon’s Serie A record, but “the important thing is for Torino to win” against Juventus.

The Derby della Mole kicks off at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The Juve goalkeeper is just four minutes away from beating Sebastiano Rossi’s all-time Serie A unbeaten record of 929 minutes, set in 1993-94 at Milan.

“We’ll give it our best shot to stop Buffon breaking the record,” Toro striker Immobile told La Stampa newspaper.

“Mind you, if it means beating Juventus then I’d be happy with a goal at the 90th too. That would also be unforgettable.

“I will admit that as a man and a professional, Buffon does deserve to be the record-holder.”

Immobile is a former Juventus player, but barely featured with the Bianconeri, whereas he found his form at Torino.

“I have never beaten the Bianconeri and I think that time has come to rectify that. It’s funny, the fans of both Toro and Napoli (his hometown club) keep asking me to beat Juve.

“I don’t know how it will end, but we want to leave the pitch to the applause of our supporters.”

Allegri calls on Juve to come out fighting against Torino

The 48-year-old insists the Old Lady mustn't dwell on their Champions League
exit in midweek and instead look to prove their greatness against Torino at the weekend.

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2557/news/2016/03/20/21510722/-?

Mar 20, 2016

Massimiliano Allegri has urged Juventus to move on from their punishing Champions League exit by beating Torino in the Turin derby.

Allegri's men appeared to be on course to record a major last-16 upset when they surged into a 2-0 lead and a 4-2 aggregate advantage against Bayern Munich in midweek thanks to first-half goals from Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado.

That scoreline remained until Robert Lewandowski reduced the arrears in the 73rd minute and Thomas Muller's last-gasp equaliser set Bayern up for a stunning 4-2 extra-time triumph.

Bayern's late turnaround marked a rare setback for Juve, who have not lost a Serie A game since October and lead the way at the summit with a three-point gap over second-placed Napoli.

But Allegri has now called on his charges to prove they are a “great” side by beating Torino to edge closer towards winning a fifth straight Scudetto.

"To become great you need to pull through moments like the Bayern game, accept the blows and come out fighting," Allegri told his pre-match news conference.

"We mustn't allow the Champions League exit to knock us off our stride. No looking back – Wednesday's result can't be changed, Derby Della Mole is another step towards lifting the title.

"We're in good physical shape after Wednesday. Psychologically speaking we do need to recharge our batteries.

"I will make the odd change to the team that played in Munich but I still need to work out my line-up."

Allegri will welcome back star forward Paulo Dybala from a calf injury, but key duo Giorgio Chiellini and Claudio Marchisio are still laid low with similar complaints.

The former Milan boss agrees the title race is in Juventus' hands ahead of the Torino clash, but doesn't want his side to lose focus.

"The amount of game remaining won't matter on Sunday, all that counts is the Derby Della Mole," Allegri added.

"It [the title race] is all in our own hands. We've got a three-point lead but there is still a long way to go.

"We must be focused on lifting a fifth consecutive title, doing so by taking one game at a time."

Dybala to start Derby della Mole?

http://www.football-italia.net/81588/dybala-start-derby-della-mole?

Mar 20, 2016

Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Mario Lemina are expected to start the Derby della Mole for Juventus at Torino.

It kicks off at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

The latest reports suggest Dybala – who was left out of the Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday due to a muscular problem – has been passed fit to start.

This would only further increase regret that the Argentine was not brought along for that decisive Round of 16 tie, which Juve lost 4-2 in extra time.

Mandzukic came off the bench at the Allianz Arena and is set to start this afternoon, so still no chance for Simone Zaza to shine.

Alvaro Morata was hugely impressive in Munich, but returns to the bench.

Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio and Martin Caceres are still out of action, so Daniele Rugani steps in to a three-man defence.

Lemina looks to be the favourite ahead of Hernanes for a midfield spot.

This could be an historic occasion, as if Buffon manages not to concede in the opening four minutes, he’ll break Sebastiano Rossi’s all-time Serie A record of 929 minutes, set in 1993-94 at Milan.

Torino are only missing Danilo Avelar, while Andrea Belotti will partner ex-Juve striker Ciro Immobile.

Bruno Peres is set to do battle with either Juan Cuadrado or Stephan Lichtsteiner down his flank.

There’s a choice between Marco Benassi and Daniele Baselli in the Granata midfield.

Probable line-ups

Torino: Padelli; Maksimovic, Glik, Moretti; Zappacosta, Acquah, Gazzi, Benassi, Peres; Belotti, Immobile

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Rugani; Cuadrado, Khedira, Lemina, Pogba, Alex Sandro; Dybala, Mandzukic

Torino: 'We want Juve revenge'

http://www.football-italia.net/81595/torino-we-want-juve-revenge?

Mar 20, 2016

Torino director of sport Gianluca Petrachi admits they want to “avenge” their Coppa Italia defeat to Juventus.

It kicks off at 15.00 CET - 14.00 GMT.

If the Granata score in the opening four minutes, they’ll stop Gigi Buffon breaking Sebastiano Rossi’s all-time Serie A record for clean sheets.

“Our objective is to beat the Bianconeri, not ruin Buffon’s record. We want to avenge the Coppa Italia defeat and all of us desire a response to that,” Petrachi told Mediaset Premium.

Juve thrashed Toro 4-0 in the Coppa a few months ago, on their way to the Final against Milan.

“Giampiero Ventura? We showed consistency over the last few years, carrying on with our ideas and our project. The Coach has never been up for debate as far as we were concerned.

“This has been an unusual season for us, but being united and maintaining the same ideas and perspectives helps. There is a great union between all of us.

“Naturally this is a match we particularly want to win, but it isn’t seen as the moment that can save a season.

“This wasn’t the campaign we expected, but let’s wait till the end to judge.”

Line-ups: Torino-Juventus

Mar 20, 2016

Juventus look to Paulo Dybala and Gigi Buffon’s record in what is sure to be a fiery Derby della Mole against Ciro Immobile’s Torino.

The Bianconeri crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday with a 4-2 extra time defeat at Bayern Munich, having been 2-0 up until the 72nd minute.

Max Allegri has to refocus his players on the Scudetto race with Napoli nipping at their heels, but Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio and Martin Caceres are still out of action.

Dybala is available again after missing the Munich trip with a muscular problem and can start with Mario Mandzukic.

This could be an historic occasion, as if Buffon manages not to concede in the opening four minutes, he’ll break Sebastiano Rossi’s all-time Serie A record of 929 minutes, set in 1993-94 at Milan.

Torino have almost the entire squad at their disposal, save for Danilo Avelar, and it’s a very special game for ex-Juve striker Immobile.

Bruno Peres scored a sensational coast-to-coast goal in the derby last year and will take part in a fascinating duel with Stephan Lichtsteiner down that flank.

Toro have lost 12 of their last 14 meetings with Juve, home and away in all competition, save for a 0-0 draw in February 2008 and 2-1 Serie A victory in April 2015.

These sides met twice already this season, Juan Cuadrado snatching a last-gasp winner in the 2-1 Serie A result and a 4-0 hammering in the Coppa Italia.

There is growing tension ahead of the derby, as following a row on Friday, a popular local bar that hosts Torino ultras was set on fire.

Torino:
Padelli; Maksimovic, Glik, Moretti; Bruno Peres, Acquah, Gazzi, Benassi, Gabriel Silva; Belotti, Immobile

Torino 1-4 Juventus: Buffon
breaks record in derby rout

While the keeper passed a memorable milestone, the Bianconeri's forwards
ran riot as they secured a straightforward victory to enhance their title hopes.

Mar 20, 2016

Gianluigi Buffon set a new Serie A record for the longest run without conceding a goal as leaders Juventus took another step towards retaining their title with a 4-1 derby win at Torino.

The veteran goalkeeper had kept 10 clean sheets in a row in the league, but could not extend the streak to 11 and his record was set at 974 minutes, breaking the previous mark of 929 minutes set by Sebastiano Rossi.

Paul Pogba put Juventus ahead after 32 minutes, bending a terrific free-kick over the wall and into Daniele Padelli's top-left corner.

Sami Khedira doubled Juve's lead shortly before half-time, rounding off a powerful run with a precise finish, and Buffon was finally beaten when Andrea Belotti scored a penalty after the break.

Torino had the ball in the net again when Maxi Lopez beat Buffon, but the assistant adjudged him to have been in an offside position and Alvaro Morata sealed the points with a brace.

Khedira was shown a straight red card for dissent with three minutes left on an otherwise fine afternoon for Juve, who go six points clear of Napoli, in action later on Sunday against Genoa.

Striker Paulo Dybala returned from a calf injury for the champions, but Claudio Marchisio and Giorgio Chiellini missed out, while Torino started former Juve striker Ciro Immobile up front.

Buffon made Serie A history after four minutes with the ball deep in Torino territory, before Marco Benassi headed over from 10 yards.

The league leaders looked flat after their midweek Champions League extra-time exit to Bayern Munich and Buffon was soon forced into a full-length stop from Benassi's 20-yard low shot.

Dybala's comeback lasted only 32 minutes before Juve's top goalscorer limped off and was replaced by Morata, with the opening goal arriving against the run of play moments later.

Pogba took over set-piece duties with Dybala off the field and he beat Padelli with a superb curling free-kick from 25 yards.

The France international was almost at it again soon afterwards, but this time Padelli made a good save.

Khedira appeared to put Juve firmly in control after 41 minutes, driving through a huge gap in the Torino defence and slipping a shot beyond Padelli.

Torino, though, got one back immediately after the break, Belotti converting a spot-kick after Alex Sandro clumsily brought down Bruno Peres.

The hosts thought they had equalised after 58 minutes when scored from a Peres throughball, but the goal was wrongly disallowed for offside, with the half-time substitute Lopez level.

That decision proved key as Juve soon restored their two-goal cushion when brilliant play by Pogba teed up Morata for a calm finish.

Torino, who have now only won just one of the last 20 derbies against Juve, pressed and Buffon saved well from Lopez, but Morata made sure of his side's victory with 14 minutes to go.

Pogba's free-kick hit the wall and the ball deflected into Morata's path for a simple goal and Juve, who played out the game with 10 men following Khedira's late red card for speaking out, moved closer to a fifth successive league title.

Juve dominate fiery
Derby della Mole

Juventus dominated the dramatic Derby della Mole and Gigi Buffon made history,
but Sami Khedira saw red and Torino had a good goal disallowed.

The Bianconeri crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday, as having been 2-0 up at Bayern Munich they eventually capitulated 4-2 in extra time. Giorgio Chiellini, Claudio Marchisio and Martin Caceres missed out, while Paulo Dybala returned to the start after missing out in Munich. Toro had lost 12 of their last 14 competitive games with Juve, save for a 0-0 draw and April 2015’s 2-1 victory.

Gigi Buffon made history at the fourth minute, breaking Sebastiano Rossi’s all-time Serie A record of 929 minutes without conceding a goal. It was set with Milan in 1993-94.

Buffon protected his record by getting down to smother a Marco Benassi shot from the edge of the box, but Juve realised Dybala was still suffering from that muscular problem that ruled him out against Bayern when he collapsed while taking a free kick. La Joya had to make way for Alvaro Morata.

However, Juve recovered quickly from that blow, as Paul Pogba curled a magnificent free kick over the wall and into the near top corner.

Pogba tried from another free kick, this time Daniele Padelli palmed it round the near post. The Granata defence parted through the middle like the Red Sea, allowing Sami Khedira to waltz through and sweep past the on-rushing Padelli for Juve’s second.

Toro also had injury problems, losing Ciro Immobile to a thigh issue, but the second half started on a high for the hosts. Alex Sandro lunged into a mistimed tackle on Bruno Peres and Andrea Belotti converted the penalty, rolling it to the right of static Buffon. This meant Buffon’s all-time Serie A record will stand at 974 minutes without conceding a goal.

Torino thought they had equalised when Maxi Lopez blasted in an angled drive on 58 minutes, but it was incorrectly disallowed. Replays show he was onside when running on to the end of a Bruno Peres through ball.

Juve survived that scare and restored their two-goal advantage, as Pogba brilliantly turned between two defenders and chipped up a pass for Morata, who controlled with his right foot and turned in with the left from a tight angle.

Daniele Rugani was decisive to stop Maxi Lopez getting Toro back into the game once more with practically a goal-line clearance.

The Bianconeri put the result under lock and key when Pogba’s free kick hit the wall and his wayward follow-up turned into an assist for Morata to redirect from eight yards. Everyone looked across to the linesman, but Afriyie Acquah was keeping him level.

Khedira saw red late on for dissent, as clearly he said something that the referee did not appreciate.

Torino: Padelli; Maksimovic, Glik, Moretti; Bruno Peres, Acquah, Gazzi, Benassi (Baselli 81), Gaston Silva (Zappacosta 75); Belotti, Immobile (Maxi Lopez 46)

Juventus: Buffon; Rugani, Bonucci, Barzagli; Lichtsteiner (Cuadrado 50), Khedira, Lemina, Pogba, Alex Sandro; Dybala (Morata 32), Mandzukic (Zaza 85)

Torino 1-4 Juventus: Bianconeri Produce
Masterclass To Win Derby Della Mole

Juventus beat Torino 4-1 in Serie A at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin on Sunday afternoon to win the Derby della Mole.

In a rather dull but competitive first-half, it was The Old Lady who took the lead through Paul Pogba’s superb free-kick in the 33rd minute. Sami Khedira added to Il Toro’s woes in the 42nd minute to give the visitors a two goal cushion at the break.

Yet, in the 48th minute Andrea Belotti calmly tucked away a controversial penalty to give Torino hope. However, in the 63rd minute Alvaro Morata restored the Bianconeri’s two goal lead before claiming his second of the game in the 76th minute to seal the victory.

After an absolutely ferocious start to match, it was Juventus who took the lead with their first shot on target as Pogba whipped a stunning 35-yard free-kick beyond the scrambling Daniele Padelli. The Bianconeri dominated Torino in the first-half and deservedly doubled their lead just before half-time.

Mario Mandzukic laid the ball off to Khedira who was allowed to charge all the way into the penalty box by some frankly awful Il Toro defending, and Khedira gratefully slotted his shot past Padelli.

After the interval, Torino were given a lifeline when Alex Sandro supposedly fouled Bruno Peres in the penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty. Replays showed the referee’s decision was a poor one.

However, Belotti did not mind and he stepped up confidently to fire past Gianluigi Buffon and become the first player to score a league goal past the Italy international in 973 minutes of play.

The Granata were much improved in the second-half, but it was Juventus who regained their two goal buffer. Pogba’s brilliant chipped pass found Morata’s clever run and the Spaniard exquisitely flicked the ball over Padelli and into the net.

Morata also scored the Bianconeri’s fourth goal after Pogba’s low free-kick ricocheted back to him and he fired a bobbly shot goalwards, which Morata calmly stabbed it into the net.

In the 86th minute Khedira was sent-off for dissent after disagreeing with a refereeing decision.

The result leaves Torino in 13th place, whereas Juventus remain top of the table.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made Serie A history in a Turin derby victory for Juventus as substitute Alvaro Morata's double helped ease their midweek Champions League heartache.

Buffon, 38, needed to survive just four minutes of the meeting with rivals Torino to pass Sebastiano Rossi's all-time league record of 929 minutes without conceding, and he did so with ease before Juventus moved 2-0 ahead through Paul Pogba and Sami Khedira, who was later dismissed.

Eventually Buffon was beaten for the first time in the league since January 10 by an Andrea Belotti penalty, yet the Bianconeri made sure of the points with a brilliant third through substitute Morata, who notched again late on in a result that extended Juve's unbeaten run to 20 league games.

Buffon had let in four goals in 120 minutes on Wednesday when Bayern Munich came from two goals down to eliminate Juventus from the Champions League in Bavaria.

As they had done on that night in Munich, Juventus went ahead through Pogba.

Paulo Dybala had been taking the visitors' free-kicks until being forced off with a hamstring injury and Pogba stepped up in his absence to curl home a fine 30-yard set-piece with 33 minutes gone.

After Pogba nearly repeated his trick from the opposite side of the box, Khedira doubled Juventus' lead by waltzing through the middle of Torino's defence and placing beyond Daniele Padelli.

The hosts fought back after the break, though it took a degree of fortune to finally beat Buffon after 974 minutes, with Belotti slotting a penalty past him that was awarded despite Alex Sandro seemingly winning the ball when tackling Bruno Peres.

The luck evened itself out just before the hour mark as Maxi Lopez, on at half-time for the injured Ciro Immobile, looked level when the flag was raised just before he fired a would-be equaliser past Buffon.

But Pogba and Morata then took control to ensure Juventus cruised to a comfortable victory over their neighbours.

Frenchman Pogba turned inside Nikola Maksimovic and scooped a pass through to Morata, who took one touch and lfited the ball over Padelli to make it 3-1.

After Buffon had saved from Lopez, Juve's two dangermen combined again 13 minutes on with a scrappier goal, Morata turning in Pogba's attempted shot after the Frenchman's first free-kick was blocked straight back to him.

The gloss was taken off the victory somewhat by Khedira's 87th-minute red card, which he seemingly accrued for something he said to the referee during a feisty affair, but the day belonged to Buffon and a Juventus team who last lost in the league at the end of October.

Alvaro Morata felt Juventus “could’ve won the Champions League” and used that anger to beat Torino 4-1.

“It was a very important game for us. We were upset after Wednesday’s defeat to Bayern Munich, but we transformed that disappointment into positive energy,” the Spaniard told Mediaset Premium.

“We are Juve, we want to win everything. It’s a shame we went out of the Champions League, as we could’ve won the trophy this season.

“Now our minds turn to the Scudetto and Coppa Italia.”

Morata bagged a brace, but was only a substitute coming on for Paulo Dybala’s muscular injury.

“The Coach chose to leave me on the bench, but this is a team sport, so it stands to reason. I am happy for the victory, we just hope Dybala’s injury isn’t serious.”

Allegri: 'Toro anger understandable'

Max Allegri insists refereeing errors “do not take away from the good things” Juventus did against Torino.

The Bianconeri shook off their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich by crushing city rivals Toro 4-1 in the Derby della Mole.

“It was a fine victory, especially as we managed to put the Munich blow behind us,” Allegri told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s just a shame we went for too many solo moves and dribbles when Torino were struggling. We need to improve in that sense, as we are still too immature and think the situation is easy.”

Paulo Dybala missed the Munich game, but went off early today with another muscular injury.

“The calf is fine, he got a knock to the flexor muscle. I made this decision because Alvaro Morata worked very hard on Wednesday and it was warm today, so I wanted fresh legs.

“We were also fortunate in that sense, as Morata came on and scored two goals. I cannot choose more than 11 players, so the substitutions were decisive today.”

Torino were furious at several refereeing decisions, including the Maxi Lopez equaliser for 2-2 that was incorrectly ruled offside.

“I understand they were upset, as we were after Wednesday in the Champions League. I never usually talk about referees and I think two incidents do not take away from the good things we did in this game.

“After the Maxi Lopez goal we continued playing and Torino sat back to wait, so it didn’t really change anything. It can happen to concede after 10 and a half clean sheets in Serie A.”

Buffon sets record in Juventus' win;

Napoli keep pace; AC Milan draw

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon made Serie A history as Juventus remained top of Serie A with a 4-1 win at Torino in the Turin derby on Saturday.

Needing to survive just four minutes to pass Sebastiano Rossi's all-time league record of 929 minutes without conceding a goal, Buffon did so with ease before Juventus moved 2-0 ahead through Paul Pogba and Sami Khedira.

Eventually Buffon was beaten for the first time in the league since Jan. 10 by an Andrea Belotti penalty, yet the Bianconeri made sure of the points with a brilliant third through substitute Alvaro Morata, who notched again late on in a result that extended Juve's unbeaten run to 20 league games.

The gloss was taken off the victory somewhat by Sami Khedira's 87th-minute red card, which he seemingly accrued for something he said to the referee.

Napoli overcame a half-time deficit to defeat Genoa 3-1 to stay three points behind Juventus.

Tomas Rincon opened the scoring for the visitors in the 10th minute as Tomas Rincon's powerful right-footed shot from outside the box caught goalkeeper Pepe Reina off guard, and Genoa held a 1-0 half-time lead.

But Gonzalo Higuain scored six moments after the break when Elseid Hysaj's smart ball forward into the box found him in plenty of space, and then he put Napoli ahead in the 81st minute with a curling 16-yard strike in off the right post.

Omar El Kaddouri added a third goal in stoppage time for Napoli as he slotted home Manolo Gabbiadini's cross.

Lazio's slim hopes of qualifying for the Europa League all but ended following a 1-1 draw against AC Milan at the San Siro.

Stefano Pioli's men took the lead through Marco Parolo, but the home side were level before the break through Carlos Bacca's strike.

Senad Lulic was sent off for a second booking with six minutes of the game remaining but Lazio held on for their eighth away draw of the season.

The Biancocelesti took the lead after nine minutes when poor defending allowed Parolo to head home from close range, much to the annoyance of Sinisa Mihajlovic who showed his displeasure on the sidelines.

The strength and persistence of Luiz Adriano and Bacca had been hard for the visitors to keep in check and the pair combined just six minutes later to equalise.

Fiorentina were held to a 0-0 draw by relegation battlers Frosinone -- but the point was enough to lift them back into fourth place above Inter Milan.

Frosinone goalkeeper Nicola Leali produced a string of fine saves to deny the Viola, who twice hit the woodwork through Nikola Kalinic and Borja Valero, while home midfielder Oliver Kragl fired a free kick against the crossbar.

Both sides went close to grabbing a winner in the closing stages. Substitute Aleksandar Tonev's shot flashed just wide and at the other end Kalinic headed just off target.

Sassuolo's slim chances of qualifying for Europe have all but ended despite coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Udinese at the Stadio Citta del Tricolore.

With Inter Milan dropping points at Roma on Saturday, Sassuolo could have closed the gap on the Europa League places to eight points with a win.

But Duvan Zapata scored his sixth goal of the campaign to give Stefano Colantuono's men an early lead.

The hosts equalised in the 64th minute when Matteo Politano headed in Federico Peluso's cross but the Neroverdi remain seventh while Udinese are now four points above the relegation zone in 16th.

Riccardo Meggiorini netted a first-half winner as Chievo claimed three points from a 1-0 win over Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Meggiorini's effort midway through the first half was enough to secure victory as the home side failed to get anything from the game despite having seven shots on target.

Sampdoria enjoyed 65 percent possession but it was Meggiorini's header which separated the two sides as Valter Birsa's cross found the Italian forward after 24 minutes for his fifth goal of the season.

Atalanta recorded their first victory in 15 games to potentially save manager Edy Reja's job as they defeated nine-man Bologna 2-0.

Reja had received no assurances on his position following his club's alarming slide, which was eventually halted by first-half goals from Alejandro Gomez and Alessandro Diamanti, before Ibrahima Mbaye and Daniele Gastaldello were both dismissed late on.

Ex-West Ham forward Diamanti squared for Gomez to break the deadlock with a close-range finish before scoring himself as Mauricio Pinilla teed him up.

Pinilla then had a penalty saved, yet it did not prove costly as Mbaye was sent off for a lunge on Gomez and Gastaldello, booked when he conceded the spot kick, followed him for two cautions.

Struggling Carpi secured an important 2-1 win against bottom side Hellas Verona with both sides desperate for points to keep them in Serie A.

The visitors got on the scoresheet three minutes before half-time when Antonio Di Gaudio found the back of the net but Verona came back fighting in the second half and levelled the score just after the hour mark through Artur Ionita.

Verona only managed to keep the score level for three minutes when Kevin Lasagna scored his fourth goal of the season and things got worse for the bottom side when two yellows in eight minutes saw Ante Rebic get sent off in the last minute of normal time.
