Will Derby inspire Juventus?

Juventus won the Derby della Mole in dramatic fashion once more.
Luca Cetta wonders if it can be a catalyst for the rest of the campaign.

With pressure intensifying on Massimiliano Allegri and his underperforming outfit after the midweek loss at Sassuolo, Juventus needed a positive response in this all-important Turin Derby. Yet it so nearly descended into a Halloween fright-night for the Bianconeri.

There was no Andrea Pirlo to provide the last-gasp heroics, but on the day before the Old Lady turned 118, Juan Cuadrado got the party started with a scrappy injury-time winner.

Forced into ritiro after a ‘disastrous’ Mapei Stadium defeat on Wednesday, Juve had to steer their season on to the right path. A second successive Derby della Mole defeat would increase the tension surrounding the squad. It would also put Allegri at risk.

The Coach got what he needed from the team in the first half. It was a much improved display capped by Paul Pogba’s wonder goal from outside the penalty area. His strike left Daniele Padelli rooted to the spot. For the first time this term the champions had scored inside the opening 20 minutes.

It looked more like the Juventus on display against Atalanta, which was their best performance of the Serie A season. They were solid defensively, with the returning Claudio Marchisio anchoring the midfield. Alvaro Morata worked hard out wide, while Paulo Dybala was readily involved. Even losing Sami Khedira to an early injury did little to stem the rhythm, as the Granata created little at the other end.

The second half, however, was a completely different tale. A late flurry in injury time aside – Leonardo Bonucci struck the woodwork before Cuadrado’s dramatic maiden goal for the club – Juventus had few opportunities to score. Indeed, the best chances came at the other end.

Allegri bemoaned his side conceding an avoidable free kick against Sassuolo that proved costly. That has been a theme throughout the season and occurred once again.

Cesare Bovo’s piledriver six minutes after the interval levelled proceedings, after his initial free kick was blocked. From there it was all Toro in front of goal. But they ran into Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve’s captain didn’t need a costume to show he is Superman. His saves did all the talking. Kamil Glik was twice denied, including a superb point-blank stop. Buffon made two further important contributions.

Had Cuadrado not got on the end of fellow substitute Alex Sandro’s low cross then the knives would be sharpening. It was a dramatic goal that masked a meek second half from Juventus.

Passes weren’t hitting their targets. And as the groans of frustration roared louder, the Granata grew in stature. Giampiero Ventura said his team played as they wished for 85 minutes. That aura of invincibility which hung over the Bianconeri in recent years has disappeared – especially at Juventus Stadium where Udinese, Chievo and Frosinone have left with points – and threatened to stay away a while longer.

But they did get the goal. And Juventus must use this confidence-boosting triumph to begin the climb up the table. “This victory helps,” Cuadrado admitted. “It fires us up more to do well and in our minds the objective is to continue this march to close on the Scudetto places.”

Currently 10th, the top three places are for the time being some way away. The next objective is to close in on qualification for the Champions League knockout phase against Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday.

Domestically, Juve have a tough run of fixtures until Christmas, including meetings with Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina. The Turin Derby success must act as the catalyst for progress. Allegri called it a “step forward.”

The first half showed what Juventus are capable of, although the second 45 revealed there are still significant improvements to be made. But they can take much more than just the three points from Cuadrado’s late winner. This could be the turning point for their season.

Allegri laments Khedira loss

The coach appeared to rule out the midfielder for their pivotal European trip to
Borussia Monchengladbach next week after he limped off in Saturday's win over Torino.

Massimiliano Allegri has revealed Sami Khedira suffered a calf strain in Juventus ' 2-1 win over Torino, and is unlikely to be fit for their trip to Borussia Monchengladbach .

Khedira is a big doubt for the Bianconeri 's crucial Champions League trip to Germany after going down with the problem early in Saturday's Turin derby - his replacement Juan Cuadrado netting a dramatic 93rd-minute winner.

And his coach later admitted it had been a "risk" to pick the Germany international, especially as he faces a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the Group D game.

"He told me that he felt good and was ready to play. We'll see if he can play midweek, but I doubt it," Allegri told reporters.

Cuadrado scored his first Juventus goal in the third minute of added time to settle the match, clinching victory after Cesare Bovo had temporarily equalised following Paul Pogba's opener on his 100th Serie A appearance.

The result prompted Allegri to praise the response of his men following their 1-0 loss to Sassuolo in midweek and subsequent punishment of being placed on a training retreat.

"After Khedira went off, the team took more control of the game and it was an entertaining game. Paulo Dybala would move over and Pogba come forward into his space," Allegri continued.

"You need determination to the very end in order to get a result like this.

"We had 12 points after 10 rounds, so tension was only natural. The team reacted well, obviously we have to improve a lot, but this was a small step forward."

Cuadrado added that he was "happy" with the team's performance.

He said: "This game will give us the required impetus to keep fighting for the title.

"We need to approach every game as if it were a final, as we did. Then the results will come.

Juventus vs. Torino 2015: Final score 2-1, Cuadrado
and Pogba the heroes in Derby della Mole win

Scrap that headline. That victory has Gianluigi Buffon written all over it.

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2015/11/1/9651460/juventus-torino-2015-serie-a-round-11-derby-della-mole-final-score-recap-result

Nov 1, 2015

Weall knew it. We knew it from the moment Giorgio Chiellini was sent off against Sassuolo on Wednesday that Simone Padoin will be bossing the right flank in the Derby della Mole. Un colpo di tacco qui, un altro lá, Padoin was a joy to watch – even if his backheel attempts were unsuccessful. It was enough to denote confidence. His grinta was there too. You can always rely on him for that.

It was a scrappy derby victory, but three points never felt better before.

Max Allegri was forced to change the system during the game once more due to the injury of Sami Khedira in the 10th minute, switching from the initial 4-3-1-2 to a 4-3-3, with Juan Cuadrado and Alvaro Morata flanking Paulo Dybala on the wings and shifting Hernanes to the regista role. He is having a hard enough time getting the right game plan with the full squad at his disposal. Moments like this will only increase the pressure on his already difficult mission of getting Juventus back on the right track.

Speaking of which, bianconeri tifosi all around the world have been rather vociferous after the latest setback in Emilia-Romagna. Gathering together in angry mobs, with scythes and blazing torches lightening their way towards the headquarters of Juventus in Turin, they have been asking for Allegri’s head. Completely mental, if anyone is interested in a humble opinion. Had Allegri even led Juventus to a 3-0 defeat in the Derby della Mole, he would have still been the man to take the Old Lady out of these dark times. But patience is not a word that can be easily found in the – sometimes limited – vocabulary of football fans nowadays.

Cuadrado could not have found a better moment to open his scoring account for Juventus. Doing an Andrea Pirlo and handing Juventus the victory against Torino in the last possible moment is surely enough to start appreciating the Colombian for his playing style that either goes haywire or becomes essential for the win. Much like it was said here.

The Champions League anthem – a massive improvement from the hideous Serie A one – and Borussia Monchengladbach is up next for the Old Lady in three days’ time and it is just redundant to stress the importance of three more points. Allegri knows the game: win and the progress to the knock-out stages is pretty much secured. Lose and the angry, blood-thirsty mobs come back to life. Either way, there will be good football to watch and talk about.

MATCH SUMMARY

After some rather surprisingly uneventful first 10 minutes, the bomb dropped. Sami Khedira got injured playing a simple pass and was immediately replaced by Juan Cuadrado.

The tifosi didn’t get to see any goal action whatsoever until the 20th minute but the long waiting was worth it. Dybala’s little dummy ensured Pogba received the ball at the edge of the box and after a great first touch, the Frenchman propelled the ball into the top corner past an idle Daniele Padelli – a superb goal reminiscent of the times Pogba used to produce something similar every fortnight.

A couple of minutes after scoring the goal, Pogba was the victim of two killing challenges in the space of five seconds, first from Afriyie Acquah and then from Cesare Bovo. Both culprits were booked by referee Gianluca Rocchi and Pogba could count himself lucky to get away without an injury.

On the half hour mark, Quagliarella missed the first good chance for Torino when he received a ball outside the area and, due to Leonardo Bonucci’s poor positioning, had plenty of time to control the ball and get a shot in but his volley went wide of Buffon’s goal.

Dybala came close to doubling Juventus’ lead three minutes later but his shot from the edge of the 16-yard-box flew past the top corner at the far post.

Two minutes before half time, Cristian Molinaro sent a ball in front of goal and Bonucci managed to get in front of Maxi Lopez to deny the Argentine what would have been an easy tap-in for a goal. The danger wasn’t immediately cleared away but Rocchi stopped the play for a foul on Andrea Barzagli.

As the second half started, little would have predicted an early goal from Torino, but it came nonetheless. Bonucci gave away a foul outside the area and Daniele Baselli only hit the wall from the resulting free-kick. The ball bounced to Bovo and the defender sent a thunderous strike into the roof of the net, leaving Gianluigi Buffon little time to react.

A few minutes later, Buffon produced a miraculous save to keep the sides level as he denied Kamil Glik’s header from point-blank range, following a corner kick. Bonucci was quick to clear the rebound away for another corner from which nothing dangerous resulted.

Pogba came close to scoring his second goal on a couple of occasions but first his shot from inside the box was weak and easily held by Padelli and then he only managed to sky his effort after receiving a good ball from Cuadrado.

Just after the hour mark, Juventus failed to took the lead in three different situations. Hernanes was the first to send a shot over the goal from outside the area, before Dybala’s effort was blocked and put behind for a corner kick. The Argentine delivered the ball in from the set piece but Pogba couldn’t make contact with the ball at the far post and the chance was squandered.

Juventus came inches away to take the lead in the first minute of injury time as Bonucci met Hernanes’ brilliant delivery from a set piece and sent a similar great header against the crossbar. Marchisio followed the rebound but his shot was cleared by the defence.

Despite that miss, the Bianconeri snatched the victory in the dying minutes through Cuadrado who managed to slide in and put the ball behind the line after a great pass from substitute Alex Sandro. Rocchi blew the full time whistle a few seconds after the goal.

LE PAGELLE

Buffon: 7.5 An amazing save to deny Glik and a couple more to block shots from distance. Could do nothing to stop Bovo’s strike.

Padoin: 6 Really spirited on the right, with good contribution for the defence

Barzagli: 6.5 Solid defending from the veteran, as he managed to contain both Lopez and Quagliarella

Bonucci: 5.5 Fantastic dedication as always, but out of his position in a couple of occasions – once again showed he’s not really himself in a defence with just two centre backs

Evra: 6 Confident display at the back. Dominated the left wing and had a really good attacking contribution

Khedira: s/v whatever

Marchisio: 5.5 A few good recoveries from the Principino but was hardly seen on the field all evening

Pogba: 7.5 Amazing goal from the Frenchman – great first half following the morale boost and despite some moments of wastefulness, he was the best man on the pitch

Hernanes: 5.5 Had to drop from trequartista to regista and did his job decently. Couldn’t bring too much to the build-up play though

Dybala: 6.5 Very lively upfront. Put in a lot of effort to create chances and help the defence. Lacked the finishing touch

Morata: 6 Worked his socks off on the pitch but he couldn’t make an impact in front of goal. Yellow carded for a reckless challenge in a neutral area

BONUS: Quagliarella: 6 Luckily, he missed a couple of good chances for the visitors

Subs

Cuadrado: 7.5
A late winning goal and an assist. Great impact from the Colombion who tormented the opposite defence throughout

Mandzukic: s/v Replaced Morata with just over 10 minutes left to play

Sandro: 6.5 Came in for Dybala in the final minutes and delivered a great assist for Cuadrado’s goal

Coach

Allegri: 6
Forced to change his strategy after just 10 minutes of football and Juventus seemed lost at times in the game. Saved by an inspired substitution and a couple of good individual performances from Pogba and Cuadrado

Juventus bounce back from midweek
pain to win Derby della Mole

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/juventus/111/blog/post/2692858/juventus-bounce-back-from-midweek-to-win-derby-della-mole?

Nov 1, 2015

It was hardly the most convincing of wins, but Juventus, at the last moment, grabbed the winner to defeat Torino 2-1 in the Derby della Mole to earn maximum points.

Having suffered an embarrassing defeat to Sassuolo midweek, Juventus spent the next few days in a training retreat, forced to live and train together without the comfort of their friends and family in order to get back on track. The result? A win in which the squad fought until the end, showing more intensity and ambition than they have managed all month.

However, while the club will be pleased to have secured a victory, the performance was far from convincing, with the team keeping possession but doing little to fashion clear goal-scoring opportunities. Incapable of producing any real threat from set pieces and still susceptible to giving away free kicks from dangerous areas on the pitch, there is still so much for Massimiliano Allegri to do if he is to get the Old Lady back to winning ways.

While Paul Pogba managed to open the scoring with a delightful goal that showed off his technique, it must be said that had Gianluigi Buffon not been as alert and as capable as he is, this could have well been a Toro victory. The Bianconeri were once again predictable going forward, lacking the necessary fluidity up front while Paulo Dybala was burdened with doing it all at the top.

However, rather than focusing on the negatives, we should recognise the positive aspects of Juve's game, such as the growing impact of the midfield. Claudio Marchisio is slowly recovering his form, and while the subtle player has a way of simply blending in, his impact can never go unnoticed. His interesting passes, his perfect positioning -- it must be said the team missed his tactical intelligence when he was lost to injury.

Alongside him, Pogba played an excellent game, and while consistency is perhaps too much to demand from a youngster, the occasions in which he performs, he dazzles. Still not one who can stretch a good display for a whole 90 minutes, he did manage a sensational goal and was the man who initiated several patterns of attacking play.

Had Khedira been allowed to stay on the pitch, then perhaps Allegri would have benefitted from affording his midfield trio more time to adapt to one another and establish a rhythm. But in his place arrived Juan Cuadrado to change the shape from a 4-3-1-2 to a 4-3-3, which, as it turns out, seemed to create a more threatening Juve side.

The Colombian is slowly learning how to channel his talent. While on occasion he can be guilty of slowing down play as he seeks to make the right move, against Torino he combined well with his teammates and terrorised his opponents with his quick movements, never forgetting to track back to aid the defence.

Of course, it was the desire he displayed on the night that made the real difference and perhaps turned him into a real Bianconero. Scoring the winning goal with the final kick of the game, he wanted all three points and he desperately wanted to be on the score sheet. As long as he continues to show ambition and the willingness to sacrifice for his teammates, he will continue to grow into a champion.

His arrival on to the pitch proved to be a blessing in disguise and incidentally brings up another point. While Allegri has regularly gotten his starting lineup wrong, tinkering and rotating too often, he does know how to rectify his errors and affect the game with his substitutions. Bringing on Cuadrado was perhaps an obvious choice, but the decision to bring on Alex Sandro in the final minutes of the game made a huge difference to the scoreline, as it was the Brazilian's brilliant assist that led to the winning goal.

The more time Sandro is afforded on the pitch, the more he will develop into the man worthy of the hefty price tag Juventus paid for him. His offensive ability is the reason why he caught the eye of the Juve directors, and while the current identity crisis means the club needs experienced players to take to the pitch, the full-back is someone who, in the near future, should be slowly integrated into the starting lineup. With more consistency, he can regain his accuracy, delivering those perfectly placed passes and precise crosses into the box as he managed to do on Saturday.

It remains to be seen whether inconsistency will continue to haunt a team that once dispatched their fiercest rivals with relative ease, but Juventus can at least go into their next match, a Champions League clash against Borussia Monchengladbach, with a little more confidence after the Derby win.

Juventus Have Much Work to Do
Despite Beating Derby Rivals Torino

Having suffered a shocking defeat to Sassuolo in their last outing, Juventus headed into Saturday’s Turin derby desperate to clinch all three points. The distance between the reigning champions and the early Serie A leaders was already growing, and the Bianconeri knew nothing less than a win would suffice.

Their problems were made more difficult by the form of their neighbours, with Torino having climbed as high as second in the standings earlier in the campaign. A goal deep in injury time would hand Juve the win, Juan Cuadrado’s dramatic late strike providing Juventus with a much needed 2-1 victory.

OptaPaolo ✔ @OptaPaolo
1993 - Last time Torino played the Derby vs Juve ranked higher than the Bianconeri in the Serie A standings was in 1993. Past.

“This result is really hard to swallow,” Torino coach Giampiero Ventura told Sky Sport Italia shortly after the final whistle (h/t Football Italia). “In the last five minutes, we hoped to just get a draw and stopped playing. We gave our best before then, showing great intensity and going close to a second goal numerous times.”

Indeed the Granata boss was right to feel aggrieved, looking on as Gigi Buffon made a string of fine saves from Giuseppe Vives and Kamil Glik, the Juventus captain doing all he could to prevent his side suffering yet another loss.

The Bianconeri suffered an early blow when Sami Khedira was forced to leave the game with an injury, the German international seemingly struggling with a calf issue. Yet they had Paul Pogba to thank for a lead, the 22-year-old opening the scoring with a deft lob after Paulo Dybala dummied Cuadrado’s pass.

Cesare Bovo equalised shortly after half-time, following up a blocked free-kick to smash home his first goal since May 2011. From there the game became more frenzied, but as time began to run out it seemed the two teams would share the points, especially when a Leonardo Bonucci header rattled the crossbar.

But substitute Alex Sandro stole into the Torino box deep into injury time and fired a low ball across the face of goal. Cuadrado slid onto it, moving quicker than Granata defender Bruno Peres to score a memorable first goal for the Turin giants following his summer move from Chelsea.

Marco Messina @Marcocalcio22
Just like last season, Juve score the game winner in the 93rd minute: last year it was Pirlo, this hear its Cuadrado

“Of course this win gives us a great boost and will help us achieve our objective of going on a strong run and making up ground on our rivals for the Scudetto,” Cuadrado told Mediaset Premium, per the official Juventus website.

“The truth is that we battled all the way until the end and when you work hard like that the results are there to be seen on the pitch,” the Colombian star continued. “We deserved the victory today.”

However, the Bianconeri will not be getting too swept up in the emotions of this win over their cross-town rivals, as coach Massimiliano Allegri explained in his post-match interview with Sky Italia (h/t Football Italia):

We had 12 points after 10 rounds, so tension was only natural. The team reacted well, obviously we have to improve a lot, but this was a small step forward. Before the defeat to Sassuolo, we had also had three good games in a row.

This represents three important points, a third consecutive victory at home and a step forward in the table. Now we have to focus on Tuesday and a decisive Champions League game with Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 48-year-old undoubtedly needs his team to string together some positive performances as they travel to Germany for that aforementioned fixture. They will then return to face Empoli before yet another international break, and to do so after enjoying a three-game winning streak is essential.

Beating Torino was a good starting point, but Allegri and Juventus still have much work to do.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Juventus Preview:
Marchisio urges Italian champions to begin revival

The Italian champions are top of Group D and can book a spot in the knockout
stages with a victory, if Sevilla lose at home to Manchester City.

http://www.goal.com/en/match/borussia-mgladbach-vs-juventus/2146811/preview

Nov 1, 2015

Claudio Marchisio wants Juventus to mark a turning point in their season with a result from Tuesday's Champions League trip to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Juan Cuadrado's injury-time strike gave Juve a 2-1 derby win over Torino on Saturday - just their second victory from their last five games in all competitions.

Last season's Champions League finalists head into matchday four a point ahead of Manchester City at the top of Group D, but Marchisio has urged his team-mates to begin a winning run if they are to challenge again for trophies this season.

"It was a win we really needed, not only because it's the derby. This game must be the turning point if we are to do something important," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"This team has been built to target the highest places in both the league and in Europe and we definitely have to show more.

"We know what we have to do. We need results, so we're right to think of things game by game."

Gladbach - who held Juve to a 0-0 draw in Turin - have enjoyed a remarkable resurgence under interim head coach Andre Schubert in recent weeks.

The five-time German champions have won six successive games in the Bundesliga, including a 4-1 victory away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Switzerland star Granit Xhaka - who scored in that win - is confident his side can trouble Juve if they are bold in their attacking play.

"Things are going well at the moment but we cannot let up by even one per cent," he told the official Bundesliga website.

"We have to stay hungry. Juve have an entirely different quality but, if we play as we did in Berlin - and perhaps even braver going forward - we can annoy them."

Gladbach's run has come despite a spate of injury problems to hit the first team. Andre Hahn, Patrick Hermann and Nico Schulz are all sidelined with knee injuries, while Tony Jantschke (shoulder) and Julian Korb (thigh) are doubts.

Juventus welcomed Stephan Lichtsteiner back to training on Sunday following heart surgery, but the full-back is unlikely to feature in Germany. Sami Khedira faces a late test on a calf strain, while Roberto Pereyra (thigh) is out.

Juve will qualify for the last 16 with a victory if Sevilla lose at home to Manchester City, but Tuesday's game comes almost exactly 40 years after Gladbach eliminated the Old Lady from the 1975-76 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

They have won nine of their 22 competitive visits to German clubs, the last coming in a 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund last season.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Juventus: Preview

Nov 2, 2015

Juventus travel to Germany to face Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday knowing that if results go their way they will book a Champions League last 16 place with two games to spare.

The defending Serie A champions, last season's beaten finalists, have clinched seven points out of a possible nine to lead Group D.

Juve, who won 2-1 at Manchester City before beating Sevilla 2-0, were held to a goalless draw by Gladbach a fortnight ago.

A victory on Tuesday coupled with a Sevilla defeat at home to Manchester City in the other pool game would see Juve seal a spot in the next round.

``We will be fighting for the three points, which will allow us to put more than one foot in the knockout stages,'' Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio said on his club's official website. ``That is our minimum aim.''

Juve, coached by Massimiliano Allegri, go into the contest in high spirits after Juan Cuadrado's last-gasp goal handed the Bianconeri a 2-1 win over Torino in Saturday's city derby.

It was the Bianconeri's fourth triumph in Serie A, a result that lifted them to 10th place.

They are nine points adrift of joint leaders Fiorentina and Inter Milan.

``It didn't matter how we won, it was just important that we got the three points,'' Marchisio said. ``We now need to build on this result in order to achieve our objectives this term.''

Gladbach need a victory to revive any hopes of reaching the knockout round.

The draw at Juve was their first point in the group stages and left Gladbach at the foot of the standings, six points adrift of Tuesday's rivals.

The German team had a tough start to their Bundesliga campaign, too, losing their opening five league games.

However, under caretaker coach Andre Schubert, they have hit back with six straight wins in the Bundesliga and Saturday's 4-1 triumph at Hertha Berlin lifted Gladbach to fifth place - 13 points adrift of pacesetters Bayern Munich.

``I think we have a new sort of energy,'' Gladbach midfielder Havard Nordtveit told his club's official website. ``We're confident; we do our own thing, we press hard and make life tough for the opposition.

``We're scoring a lot of goals too.

``We're looking forward to what promises to be a special game.

``It's our second home match in the competition and the atmosphere will be excellent.

``I hope that we put in a good performance because if we do, anything can happen.

``Juventus won't underestimate us - they'll know that we have won six on the bounce in the league and will make life tough for them.''

Marchisio is well aware of that.

``Going to Germany will be a completely different match,'' he said. ``They've won their last six fixtures in the league and will have the advantage of playing in front of their home support.''

The visitors will be bolstered by the return of defender Giorgio Chiellini from suspension while Martin Caceres, Roberto Pereyra and Stephan Lichtsteiner are all sidelined through injury.

Gladbach will not be at full strength at the Borussia-Park with Andre Hahn, Nico Schulz, Martin Stranzl and Patrick Herrmann, all out injured.

Gladbach vs. Juventus: Team News, Predicted Lineups

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2584829-gladbach-vs-juventus-team-news-predicted-lineups-live-stream-tv-info?

Nov 2, 2015

Having seemingly begun their 2015/16 Champions League campaign in spectacular fashion, Juventus stalled in their last outing, held to 0-0 draw by Borussia Monchengladbach in Turin.

Now, just two weeks later, the same sides will meet again, with the Bianconeri travelling to Germany to take on Die Fohlen in a clash that both need to win.

For the home side, victory is essential given they currently sit at the foot of Group D, and their hopes of qualification would be all but extinguished should they fail.

After ending the Bundesliga campaign in third place last term, their domestic campaign began in poor fashion, losing their opening five matches, which prompted coach Lucien Favre to resign from his position.

Andre Schubert was appointed as an interim replacement, and Gladbach have rattled off six consecutive wins under the former FC Saint Pauli boss. He has quickly galvanised the squad but was quick deflect credit to his players following their recent 4-1 win away to Hertha Berlin.

“The team are doing a fantastic job of putting into practice on the pitch what we're doing in training,” Schubert told the official Bundesliga website after their most recent victory, and Juventus will need to be at their best if they are to gain a positive result.

OptaFranz ✔ @OptaFranz
3 - Andre Schubert is the first coach of @borussia_en to win the first 3 @Bundesliga_EN matches. Historical.

The Bianconeri returned to winning ways themselves at the weekend, emerging with a 2-1 victory against cross-town rivals Torino on Saturday.

However, coach Massimiliano Allegri is aware that it was a result that they must build upon quickly, as he told Sky Italia shortly after that match came to an end.

“This represents three important points, a third consecutive victory at home and a step forward in the table,” he said (h/t Football Italia). “Now we have to focus on Tuesday and a decisive Champions League game with Borussia Monchengladbach.”

Allegri’s men are currently top of the Champions League group standings with seven points, and a victory in their next outing would all but ensure them a place in the knockout rounds once again.

Probable Formations

e843ca188a753157d97680f53989b071_origina

Borussia Monchengladbach: (4-2-3-1):

Yann Sommer; Julian Korb, Andreas Christensen, Alvaro Dominguez, Oscar Wendt; Granit Xhaka, Mahmoud Dahoud; Ibrahima Traore, Raffael, Fabian Johnson; Lars Stindl.

Unavailable: Patrick Herrmann, Martin Stranzl, Marvin Schulz (all injured).

Juventus (4-3-3):

Gigi Buffon; Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Patrice Evra; Claudio Marchisio, Hernanes, Paul Pogba; Juan Cuadrado, Alvaro Morata, Paulo Dybala.

Unavailable: Kwadwo Asamoah, Sami Khedira, Roberto Pereyra, Stephan Lichtsteiner (all injured).

Player to Watch

Paul Pogba may well be the player to focus on in this encounter, the Frenchman playing a crucial role in that win over Torino.

Having opened the scoring with a wonderful lobbed effort, it was his pass to Alex Sandro that, ultimately, led to Juan Cuadrado’s late match-winning goal.

It marked a return to form for the 22-year-old who has looked distinctly poor in recent weeks, particularly in the midweek defeat at Sassuolo.

His international coach Didier Deschamps discussed his performances with Italian newspaper TuttoSport, saying he expects to see more from Pogba.

“He’s a great player, if he does well on the pitch he can do other things. The only truth is on the pitch,” Deschamps explained (h/t Football Italia). “I know he’s not a No. 10, not a second striker, and I always leave him the freedom to go forward but a midfielder has to do defensive work. Maybe it’s not what he likes most, but it’s important for the team.”

Key Battle

If Pogba can do that, then he will become increasingly influential for Juventus, but there is, arguably, no player more central to Gladbach’s recent winning run than Raffael.

The Brazilian striker has already weighed in with five goals and six assists this term, but has yet to find the net in the Champions League. He will hope to change that on Tuesday night, while Giorgio Chiellini is likely to be the man charged with denying the 30-year-old an opportunity to do so.

The Juventus defender, 31, will be also keen to make amends for his senseless red card against Sassuolo, with his first-half dismissal, arguably, a crucial factor in that eventual defeat. An experienced campaigner, the Bianconeri will hope to see a more intelligent display from Chiellini here.

Odds (via Odds Shark)

Away win: 59-50

Home win: 223-100

Draw: 61-25

Nov 2, 2015

Stephan Lichtsteiner is named in the Juventus squad to face Borussia Monchengladbach following heart surgery.

The full-back had a cardiac ablation operation at the start of last month, having gone off in the draw with Frosinone with breathing difficulties.

The Swiss international returned to training this morning, and is named in the 21-man squad for tomorrow’s match in Germany.

However, SportMediaset reports that Lichtsteiner is unlikely to be fit to take to the pitch, having been out of action for almost a month.

Juventus squad to face Borussia Monchengladbach:

Buffon, Chiellini, Caceres, Zaza, Marchisio, Morata, Pogba, Hernanes, Alex Sandro, Barzagli, Cuadrado, Mandzukic, Lemina, Bonucci, Dybala, Rugani, Neto, Lichtsteiner, Sturaro, Evra, Audero.

Schubert: ‘Juventus a great team’

http://www.football-italia.net/75204/schubert-%E2%80%98juventus-great-team%E2%80%99?

Nov 2, 2015

Borussia Mönchengladbach Coach Andre Schubert warns Juventus are “a great team, no doubt” ahead of their meeting tomorrow.

The Bianconeri face the German side in the Champions League tomorrow, having been held at Juventus Stadium two weeks ago.

“Juventus are a great team, there’s no doubt about that,” Schubert told reporters in his pre-match Press conference.

“Recent successes, or ones in the past don’t count for much in a game like this. We’re focused on the game tomorrow, it will feature two good teams and we’ll try to cause trouble for Juve, creating danger, because we want to win the game.

“They’re a great team, with great individual quality and tactics, and a beautiful challenge lies ahead of us.

“We’ll have to adapt to Juventus’ tactical flexibility, we have an idea of how to do it so I hope it’s a good idea.

“After that we have to deal with one-on-one situations, but again, I don’t pay much attention to what happened a few years ago.

“We’re a good team, who maybe haven’t had the most convincing start to the season, but we have more and more stability and we’ll try to show that on the pitch tomorrow.”

After taking a point in Turin, Gladbach could put themselves in a better position to qualify with a win, but Schubert insists he’s not taking that into consideration.

“I’ll repeat what I said two weeks ago, personally I don’t look at the table. It’s a game at home, in front of our fans and we want to win.

“That’s the approach, then after that we can look at the table.”

Bonucci: ‘Juventus must always win’

http://www.football-italia.net/75209/bonucci-%E2%80%98juventus-must-always-win%E2%80%99?

Nov 2, 2015

Leonardo Bonucci sounds a rallying cry to his Juventus teammates - “every game has to be a win.”

The Bianconeri have endured a poor start to the Serie A season, and currently lie 10th, nine points off the top of the table.

The summer saw a number of new arrivals in Turin, and the defender says he and his fellow experienced campaigners must impart the philosophy of the club.

“The last-minute goal [against Torino] should be a starting-point for those who came in,” Bonucci said in the Press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.

“Nothing can be left to chance, you have to try and win from the first second to the last.

“We didn’t say much, in the end we had to erase those 45 minutes against Sassuolo, where we were missing almost everything, starting with our pride.

“Every time you go on the pitch, it doesn’t matter how you do it, but you have to go out there for three points and a win.

“Above all, we older players have to look to explain to the younger ones, the newcomers, that at Juventus it’s unthinkable to have one win then one defeat, and therefore the ups-and-downs which we’ve experienced at the start of this season.

“Every game has to be a win.

“It’s not that some of them haven’t understood that, but they’re coming from different mentalities, being thrown into a project as important as the one at Juventus isn’t easy for anyone.

“I’ve been there, when I arrived at Juve from Bari. This shirt puts pressure and expectations on you that you don’t get with others.

“So it’s normal that when you arrive you can lose your way for a brief moment, and it’s in those times that we have to be good as a group, stick together, and explain to the newcomers what it means to fight for this shirt.

“We’ve shown in the games we’ve won that when we go on the pitch and all give 110 per cent that we can bring home important results.

“Look at Manchester [City], look at the derby. So I think that’s the main aspect, motivation, concentration and a spirit of sacrifice. Fighting for every ball as a team, and making sure we’re united and decisive in defence and attack.

“I think that was the secret of the Juventus which won in the last few years, and it has to continue for this Juventus.”

Allegri: ‘Qualification not easy’

http://www.football-italia.net/75210/allegri-%E2%80%98qualification-not-easy%E2%80%99?

Nov 2, 2015

Juventus Coach Max Allegri warns that Champions League qualification “is not done yet, it’s certainly not easy.”

The Bianconeri take on Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park tomorrow, with two wins and a draw from their opening three group games.

“When you play in the Champions League, it’s normal that the ultimate goal is the maximum, and the maximum is to win it,” Allegri explained in his pre-match Press conference.

“But the Champions League is always a competition in itself, because you have to find the best physical and mental condition in March, and above all have everyone available.

“Last year I think our strength was that we arrived in excellent physical condition, at an excellent time of the season.

“It’s difficult to say [how far Juventus can go] let’s take it one step at a time, since we can’t win two games [in a row] in the League [at the moment] we’re looking to get through in the Champions League.

“It’s not done yet, because it’s certainly not easy, certainly not, because there are three games still to play and there are many points at stake.

“So it’s still an open group.”

Sami Khedira to miss trip to
Borussia Monchengladbach due to injury

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2015/11/2/9657246/sami-khedira-injury-juventus-2015-serie-a-champions-league

Nov 2, 2015

It took Sami Khedira less than one half of play in his first Juventus appearance to pick up an injury. For a guy who had just returned from a major injury and had the desire to shed the 'injury-prone' label, it was pretty much the exact opposite of what a good first impression was. Khedira was out for the next two months — again, not getting rid of that injury-prone history that he brought with him to Turin.

But after coming back from his first Juventus injury, Khedira has picked up another. "Can't the guy catch any kind of break?" you ask yourself. Apparently the world is just out to prove that when it comes to the Juventus squad staying healthy this season, we just can't have nice things.

We knew this news was coming after Khedira had to be replaced by Juan Cuadrado early in Saturday's 2-1 win over Torino in the Derby della Mole. The one thing is that we didn't know the severity of the injury itself. After a few hours of medical tests 48 hours after the fact, we've come to find out just how long Juventus will be without their No. 6 in the center of the midfield. From Juve's official website:

Sami Khedira underwent medical tests on Monday in Vinovo, which revealed a slight muscular strain but ruled out any tear.

The midfielder will therefore miss out on the Champions League trip to Germany and his condition will be monitored over the coming days.

I'll point out there was a slight sigh of relief after reading the short medical update when I saw it in the morning. I'll take Khedira missing one game — albeit a quite important Champions League game — over the potential of him missing one or two months. When you saw him laying on the Juventus Stadium turf on Saturday, the "Here we go again..." thoughts had to be racing through your mind. They were certainly racing through mine, that's for sure.

So, as much as Juventus will likely miss Khedira against Borussia Monchengladbach, if he's back training in the next couple of days, it's fine by me. It could have been a lot worse because we've been essentially trained to think bad things when it comes to Juventus players and injuries. But when you see any kind of tear being ruled out by the Juventus medical staff, that's something to be happy about. Yes, even if it means no Champions League football for Sami Khedira this week.

Juventus must build on derby
win in Monchengladbach

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/uefa-champions-league/match/434218/borussia-monchengladbach-juventus/preview?

Nov 2, 2015

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio described the club's victory against Torino in the Derby della Mole as a "turning point" while former coach Alberto Zaccheroni said the side's title hopes are still alive: "None except Juve can reclaim enough points to reach first."

However, this writer believes that the Old Lady hasn't given any signs of genuine recovery despite the weekend win. For example, there is still so much work to be done by current boss Massimiliano Allegri if he hopes to recover consistency and tactical harmony.

While Juan Cuadrado's last-minute goal against their city rivals proved that Juve's players are showing signs of ambition and the desire to fight until the last minute, it remains to be seen if confidence has been restored, as well as the notion of playing as a collective.

On Tuesday the Bianconeri play at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League. Like Juventus, they started the season badly before accumulating six consecutive wins to jump up the Bundesliga table into fifth place.

Playing a delicious brand of football that focuses on speed and high pressing, Gladbach left their weekend opponents Hertha Berlin feeling overwhelmed and exhausted en route to a 4-1 win. Andre Schubert's men are playing with confidence and are keen on keeping their interim coach in charge.

When Lucien Favre walked away in September, no-one could have hoped for such a run of results; it's remarkable to see how simply raising the self-esteem of down-trodden players and playing a more direct and simple style has resulted in 21 goals in six league games.

While the Foals do remain capable of a defensive mistake, if the German side do attempt a more adventurous style of play than we saw in the 0-0 draw in Turin, then Juventus' backline will be under immense pressure.

It's essential that the Italian side's midfield makes an impact to hinder their opponents and that means working on restricting the space to stop the home team from playing a direct game that utilises their speed and the space available.

Sami Khedira will not be present for Juve and his experience and tactical intelligence will be sorely missed. Allegri will either decide to replace the German with Stefano Sturaro, which would allow Marchisio to adopt the deep-lying Andrea Pirlo role, or deploy Hernanes to allow Marchisio and Paul Pogba to exploit their excellent timing and help the forward line to score goals. Their constant running will provide the side with greater options.

Unfortunately it seems Allegri will keep Paulo Dybala on the bench and opt for Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata up top. The duo failed to combine adequately in the previous game against Monchengladbach and the worry is they will suffer the same fate on Tuesday evening.

Mandzukic, though capable of scoring important goals, has yet to adapt to Juve's patterns and seems rather limited in his ability. He requires a perfectly-tuned team behind him to provide him with the service required to make a difference and, at this moment in time, that is not being made available to him.

Allegri hopes Mandzukic's predatory nature will mean he can exploit the defensive mistakes the Foals are likely to make but the Croatian will need to improve his relationship with the squad if he is to provide the team with important contributions.

However, what is most important is that this will not be a game won by virtue of character or immense desire -- Juve can win if they demonstrate the superiority of their talent. By maintaining possession, making the right decisions and showing off their technique, they can surprise a side that might currently feel invincible.

A win in Germany will facilitate Juve's progression in this competition, while another dismal showing will leave Allegri concerned. His team simply cannot afford to fail both domestically and in Europe.

Andre Schubert: Monchengladbach hoping
to spring surprise on Juventus

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/uefa-champions-league/story/2695460/andre-schubert-gladbach-hoping-to-spring-surprise-on-juve?

Nov 3, 2015

Borussia Monchengladbach are hopeful of picking up their first ever win in the Champions League when they host Juventus on Tuesday night, according to coach Andre Schubert.

The Foals have won six consecutive Bundesliga games under interim boss Schubert, who took over after Lucien Favre vacated his role following five defeats from the first five league matches of the season.

While Gladbach have turned their fortunes around domestically, they have only picked up one point from three Champions League clashes -- a goalless draw against Juve in Turin last month.

Tuesday's match at Borussia Park represents Gladbach's last chance to stay in the race for a top-two finish in Group D, although they would still be in with a chance of a Europa League spot should they suffer a defeat.

Addressing reporters at his prematch news conference, Schubert said the focus currently is only on the match against Juve and not on the group permutations.

"The result is the only thing that matters and we will approach the match accordingly. We will see what happens," Schubert said.

"At some point we will have to have a look at the table, but there's nothing to be gained from doing so at the moment."

Despite Juve's struggles in Serie A this season -- the Italian champions sit 10th in the table -- Schubert warned: "It will be a big challenge for us, and we will have to be ready. We have managed to bring a certain level of stability into our game in recent weeks, and we want to show that out on the pitch [on Tuesday]."

When asked about his thoughts on the Italian media nicknaming him "The Magician" for turning the fate of his club around in such style, Schubert replied: "I don't have a magic wand or any magical curses.

"We will concentrate on what we do best, and that's football. If there's any magic going on then it's on the pitch with players like Ibo [ibrahima Traore]."

Borussia Monchengladbach V Juventus – Preview:
Bianconeri Out To Stay Top In Group D

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2015/11/borussia-monchengladbach-v-juventus-preview-bianconeri-out-to-stay-top-in-group-d/?

Nov 3, 2015

Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach host Juventus at the Borussia-Park in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the Italians hoping to secure maximum points and stay top of Group D.

The Turin giants will be boosted by Saturday’s 2-1 victory in Serie A over local rivals Torino in the Derby della Mole, while Die Fohlen hammered Hertha Berlin 4-1 in the German capital on Saturday, recording their sixth victory consecutive league win since interim coach Andre Schubert took charge in late September.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men currently sit top of Group D in the Champions League with seven points after three games. After beating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on matchday one, the Bianconeri then defeated La Liga outfit Sevilla 2-0 at the Juventus Stadium but could only manage a 0-0 draw against Tuesday’s opponents in Turin.

Die Borussen meanwhile, sit bottom of Group D on one point, and had a disastrous start to their Champions League campaign, getting beaten 3-0 away to Sevilla on matchday one, before losing again, despite taking the lead in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City at the Borussia-Park. Their solitary point in Turin two weeks ago will give the Germans faint hope of making the knockout stages at the halfway stage in Group D.

The two sides had never met previously since the inception of the Champions League, but it was in the same week 40 years ago that Borussia eliminated Juve in the second round of the 1975-76 European Cup. The Germans won the first leg in Dusseldorf 2-0, thanks to goals from Jupp Heynckes and Allan Simonsen.

The return leg in Turin ended 2-2 despite the Old Lady taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Sergio Gori and Roberto Bettega but Gladbach came back to draw thanks to goals from Dietmar Danner and Simonsen again to send the Germans through to the next round.

Andre Schubert’s side are without injured defenders Martin Stranzi and Tony Jantschke, while midfielders Patrick Herrman, Andrea Hahn and Nico Schulz are also sidelined through injury.

The Old Lady head into the fixture without the injury midfield duo Roberto Pereyra and Sami Khedira, while defender Stephan Lichtsteiner remains a long-term absentee.

Form Guide: Borussia Monchengladbach (W-D-W-W-W) Juventus (D-D-W-L-W)

Expected Starting XIs

Borrussia Monchengladbach:

Juventus:

Line-ups: Gladbach-Juventus

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2015/11/borussia-monchengladbach-v-juventus-preview-bianconeri-out-to-stay-top-in-group-d/?

Nov 3, 2015

Juventus give Stephan Lichtsteiner his comeback from the start in tonight’s big Champions League trip to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Bianconeri are still top of their Champions League group, but only barely following a surprise 0-0 home draw with Gladbach.

Max Allegri is still dealing with injuries to Roberto Pereyra and Sami Khedira, but Lichtsteiner returned to training this week a month after heart surgery on October 2.

Incredibly, the Swiss international is thrown straight back into the starting XI on his comeback.

There are other surprises, like Hernanes in what appears to be the trequartista role behind Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, dropping Juan Cuadrado and Mario Mandzukic.

Paul Pogba got his mojo back at the weekend with a scorching strike in the 2-1 victory over city rivals Torino.

Borussia Monchengladbach are bottom of the Champions League group, but have really turned things around since Coach Andre Schubert took over.

At the weekend they demolished Hertha Berlin 4-1 away from home and flew up to fifth place in the Bundesliga.

The draw with Juve is the only stalemate in a run of six games in all competition, the rest all being victories.

There are injury issues, as BMG miss Andre Hahn, Patrick Hermann, Nico Schulz, Martin Stranzl and Tony Jantschke.

Juventus will wear their pink away strip this evening.

HT 1-1: Lichtsteiner shocks Gladbach

http://www.football-italia.net/75267/ht-lichtsteiner-shocks-gladbach?

Nov 3, 2015

Stephan Lichtsteiner made the perfect comeback a month after heart surgery, scoring as Juventus hold Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 at half-time.

The Bianconeri knew they would qualify with a win here and Manchester City victory away to Sevilla. Stephan Lichtsteiner made his surprise comeback straight from the starting XI, having undergone heart surgery to correct an atrial flutter on October 2. Sami Khedira and Roberto Pereyra missed out, Hernanes in the trequartista role. Borussia Monchengladbach had won five of their last six games in all competition, interrupted only by a 0-0 draw in Turin. Andre Hahn, Patrick Hermann, Nico Schulz, Martin Stranzl and Tony Jantschke were sidelined.

Patrice Evra volleyed over from a free kick in the opening minutes, but 19-year-old Mahmoud Dahoud unleashed a sudden scorcher from outside the box that swerved and dipped to bounce off the bar. Gigi Buffon assumed it was going over and misjudged the flight of the ball.

The hosts were gifted the opening goal by a howler from Giorgio Chiellini, who prodded the ball straight at Raffael and Fabian Johnson drilled a precise angled drive across Buffon into the far bottom corner.

Buffon fingertipped an Ibrahima Traore effort out from under the bar, but Chiellini almost made up for his error with a free header just wide on a corner.

Granit Xhaka and Havard Nordtveit had snapshots from distance, then Yann Sommer got down well to palm an Evra header round the base of the post.

Dybala tried to get on the end of a Hernanes assist, but Xhaka’s leg was so high it was almost a kick to the head and the referee waved away protests.

Incredibly, it was Lichtsteiner on his comeback just a month after heart surgery who scored the equaliser. It was a divine Paul Pogba chipped pass over the top and Lichtsteiner down the right volleyed across Sommer into the far bottom corner.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Juventus (Half-Time)

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner scores goal
in first game back from heart surgery

http://www.blackwhitereadallover.com/2015/11/3/9665956/stephan-lichtsteiner-juventus-borussia-monchengladbach-2015-champions-league-goals

Nov 3, 2015

Even before the official starting lineups were announced, the rumors started picking up steam regarding Stephan Lichtsteiner coming back to the starting lineup. This was a big deal considering what he's dealt with health-wise over the last month or so — having to be checked into the hospital after Juve's win over Genoa because he had trouble breathing and then subsequently undergoing heart surgery.

But you couldn't have written a better script when it came to Juventus' first goal after the Old Lady fell behind 1-0.

Paul Pogba with the chip to a sprinting Lichtsteiner over the top of the defense. And just as was the case when Andrea Prilo used to drop him dimes over the top, the Swiss Express finished it — this time, off the volley to even the score against Borussia Monchengladbach just before halftime.

Juventus looked dead in the water for the better part of the first 30 minutes against Gladbach. But to get a goal right before the half not only energized them, but certainly gave them plenty of hope entering the second half. And, to have it be courtesy of Lichtsteiner, who missed 30 days due to the aforementioned heart surgery, is just as good of a moment as you can get. Not a bad way to mark your return to the starting lineup. And not a bad way to punch heart surgery right in the face and show us he's the same old Lichtsteiner we've come to know and love over the past five years.

Hernanes was sent off as 10-man Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Juve would have qualified for the knockout stages with a victory, but the midfielder's second half sending off for a rash challenge ended their hopes of a win.

Gladbach, who went into the game on the back of three consecutive victories across all competitions, took the lead inside the first 20 minutes through Fabian Johnson, but Stephan Lichtsteiner's equaliser ended their hopes of qualifying from Group D with two games left to play.

There had been doubts over whether Lichtsteiner would play football again when he was forced to undergo heart surgery to correct a defect at the start of October, and he was a surprise inclusion in Allegri's starting line-up.

His selection proved decisive in a tightly contested match, and his finish from Paul Pogba's exquisite pass put the final touch on a fabulous goal.

Last season's runners-up Juve will seal their place in the last 16 if they defeat Manchester City next time out, while the best Gladbach can hope for now is third place in the group and a spot in the Europa League.

Wearing their striking pink change strip, Juve started on the front foot and almost opened the scoring when Giorgio Chiellini headed a free-kick down for Patrice Evra, who shot narrowly over with the outside of his left foot.

Gladbach soon began to find their flow, and Mahmoud Dahoud almost struck one of the goals of the tournament when he controlled a clearance and thumped a wonderful swerving drive that crashed into the crossbar with Gianluigi Buffon well beaten.

Shortly afterwards, the home side were ahead courtesy of an error by Chiellini, who slipped as he tried to clear Oscar Wendt's cross, allowing Raffael to play in Johnson to get away from Evra and fire an angled shot into the left corner of the net.

Chiellini almost atoned for his error when he out-jumped Granit Xhaka to head narrowly wide from a corner, and Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer then had to be alert to keep out Evra's powerful downward header with a fine save.

Just before half-time, Pogba conjured a moment of magic for Juve, scooping a sensational lobbed pass into the path of Lichtsteiner, and the Switzerland international lashed a first-time volley beyond Sommer to level.

Pogba fired narrowly wide shortly after the restart as Juve maintained the momentum that Lichtsteiner's equaliser had given them, and Alvaro Morata had a shot deflected wide as they probed for a winner.

The visitors were in the ascendancy when Hernanes slid into a challenge with Alvaro Dominguez two-footed with his studs up, and referee Bjorn Kuipers showed the Brazilian a straight red card.

Despite the setback, Juve continued to press and Pogba went close again with a free-kick that swerved narrowly wide of Sommer's near post.

The home side then came agonisingly close to scoring the winner when Lars Stindl was denied by Buffon, and the veteran goalkeeper made another brilliant late save from Thorgan Hazard to earn Juventus the draw and send Gladbach out.

CL: Lichtsteiner back,

The Bianconeri knew they would qualify with a win here and Manchester City victory away to Sevilla. After going down to 10 men, they played for the point and are still five points clear of Sevilla, albeit now second in Group D.

Incredibly, it was Lichtsteiner on his comeback just a month after heart surgery who scored the equaliser. It was a divine Paul Pogba chipped pass over the top and Lichtsteiner down the right volleyed across Sommer into the far bottom corner.

Straight after the restart, Pogba curled inches wide and Christiansen’s decisive header prevented Leo Bonucci nodding in a corner.

Just as Juve were taking control, Hernanes threw himself into a shocking two-footed challenge on Alvaro Dominguez and it was a straight red card. The Brazilian jumped over the ball and the player’s leg, which is fortunate, as otherwise it could’ve resulted in a broken fibula.

Pogba’s free kick was deflected on to the side-netting and Johnson fired over from 10 yards, while Buffon dealt with a Xhaka strike that bounced right in front of him.

Juve were increasingly pinned back into their own half with 10 men and Buffon stuck out an ankle for a decisive save from point-blank range on Lars Stindl’s downward header.

The Bianconeri barely went beyond the centre-circle in the final half-hour of the game and tried to run down the clock, Dybala booked for time-wasting as he walked very slowly off the pitch.

Buffon needed a fantastic fingertip save in the final minute to turn Thorgan Hazard’s curler on to the crossbar and on the resulting corner Chiellini made an acrobatic clearance.

Borussia Monchengladbach, Juventus
finishes all square

Nov 3, 2015

Borussia Monchengladbach and ten-man Juventus have played out a 1-1 draw in Tuesday night's Champions League Group D clash at the Borussia-Park.

The visitors were quickest out of the starting blocks as Patrice Evra pounced on a rebound inside the box after just three minutes but blasted the ball inches above the bar.

Nevertheless Monchengladbach recovered to take the game to their opponents and were rewarded in the 18th minute when Fabian Johnson latched onto Rafael's precise pass deep inside the box and rifled a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Juve came within a whisker of equalising in the 26th minute when Paulo Dybala's corner was met by a leaping header from Giorgio Chiellini, which sailed narrowly wide of the left post, though Monchengladbach countered almost immediately with a ferocious shot from Granit Xhaka that flew over the bar.

Nevertheless Massimiliano Allegri's charges were able to reap the rewards from their attacking endeavours when Stephan Lichtsteiner, playing his first game back following his recovery from a heart condition, fired home with a volley on the edge of the box.

The Old Lady, however, suffered a major setback shortly after the restart when midfielder Hernanes was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Alvaro Dominguez, and from then on Gladbach upped their attacking intent.

Just after the hour Johnson came within a whisker of edging his side back into the lead and adding to his tally after picking up a pass from Oscar Wendt, but his shot from inside the box flashed just over the bar.

Andre Schubert's charges continued to dominate their opponents, who hung on by the skin of their teeth time and time again, most notably when Lars Stindl's 77th-minute close-range header was skilfully palmed away by Buffon.

Thorgan Hazard was next to cause panic in the Juve box when, with just one minute left, he latched on to a pass on the edge of the box and let rip with a vicious shot that the World Cup-winning goalkeeper pushed onto the post and out of danger.

Ultimately Gladbach could not make their man advantage count come the final whistle as the points were shared out, a result that sees the hosts remain bottom of Group D and the Serie A side slip to second behind Manchester City, who are now through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Juventus: Fiesty Draw
Sees Bianconeri Near Knockout Rounds

1694wwj.jpg

http://forzaitalianfootball.com/2015/11/borussia-monchengladbach-1-1-juventus-fiesty-draw-sees-bianconeri-near-knockout-rounds/?

Nov 3, 2015

Borussia Monchengladbach drew with Juventus 1-1 at Borussia-Park on Tuesday night in Group D of the Champions League, sending the Bianconeri to touching distance of the knockout rounds.

Fabian Johnson scored the game’s opening goal with a smart finish across goal following a Giorgio Chiellini error. Stephan Lichtsteiner announced himself back on the football scene with a belting leveller following life-threatening surgery a month ago. Hernanes was later sent off for a dangerous tackle in the second-half.

The German home side began the better of the two sides with the first chance arriving at the feet of Mahmoud Dahoud, who in turn spanked a wonderful effort that left Gianluigi Buffon flatfooted with the ball striking the crossbar.

Monchengladbach took their early dominance to their advantage when the deadlock was broken just after the quarter of an hour mark. It was Johnson who was on hand to give his side the lead following a shockingly poor defensive clearance from Chiellini.

Patrice Evra went close soon after when searching for an equaliser but had his effort kept out. Yann Sommer’s fingertips were enough to keep the home side ahead for all of three minutes.

Lichsteiner wrote his own headlines with a memorable volley after a truly sumptuous ball from Paul Pogba to get the Italian’s level going into half time.

Juventus started off as they ended the first-half but things took a turn following a needless challenge from Hernanes who received a straight red card for his foolish two-footed tackle.

The loss of a man didn’t look to deter the Bianconeri but Johnson came close to restoring Monchengladbach’s lead with a fierce shot that just cleared the crossbar by a few inches.

Buffon then did well to thwart Lars Stindl’s header and push Thorgan Hazard’s onto the bar to keep the match at 1-1.

Nov 3, 2015

Borussia M'gladbach

1 Y. Sommer - Could do nothing about Lichtsteiner’s thumping volley but pulled off several great saves to help his side pick up a well-deserved point.

6 H. Nordtveit - Had a mixed evening in a relatively unfamiliar right-back role. Was able to get forward well and but often lost out when Evra put him under pressure.

3 A. Christensen - The centre-back was largely impressive but had a few nervy moments, particularly at the start of the second half.

15 Álvaro Domínguez - Didn’t put a foot wrong in the middle of an impressive back four and was an absolute rock from start to finish.

17 O. Wendt - The full-back was a constant figure inside the Juventus half of the pitch and continually impressed as he battled against Lichtsteiner.

16 I. Traoré - Arguably one of his side’s best players. Always looked bright when on the ball and played an important role in almost every attacking move.

34 G. Xhaka - The lynchpin in the middle of the pitch. Dictated the pace of the game well and made sure that Juventus couldn't hit Gladbach on the counter-attack.

8 M. Dahoud - The youngster impressed once again with an excellent performance. Hit the crossbar in the first half and was a constant threat from then onwards.

19 F. Johnson - Put in a great shift inside the Juventus half of the pitch and was rewarded with his side’s only goal thanks to a lovely strike that left Buffon with no chance.

11 Raffael - The Brazilian put in a great shift, often dropping deep in an attempt to pick up the ball, and was a vital component in a solid Gladbach front line.

13 L. Stindl - Put in a good shift in front of goal and was far better than two weeks ago but really should have done better with a great chance to score late on.

Substitutes

10 T. Hazard
- Came on late on and almost fired in his side's winner with an excellent strike that Buffon was just about able to tip onto the crossbar.

Juventus

1 G. Buffon - The veteran goalkeeper pulled off several excellent saves to deny Gladbach the opportunity to find a winner.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - It was a night to remember for the right-back, who marked his return after undergoing life-changing surgery by firing in a wonderful volley for the equaliser.

19 L. Bonucci - Put in a solid shift in the middle of an under-pressure Juventus back line and was unlucky not to pick up a clean sheet as a result.

3 G. Chiellini - Gifted Gladbach their only goal of the game with a terrible scuffed clearance that gave his side a mountain to climb.

33 P. Evra - Looked bright, particularly going forward, where he was a constant menace, and put in a strong defensive shift against Nordtveit.

27 S. Sturaro - Had a slightly quiet first half but burst to life at the start of the second and looked far better going forward before Hernanes’ red card.

8 C. Marchisio - Never looked comfortable at the base of the Juventus midfield. Was too often bullied off the ball and wasn’t strong enough defensively.

10 P. Pogba - Set up Lichtsteiner’s goal with a truly world-class chipped cross that perfectly summed up the Frenchman’s night.

11 Hernanes - Let his team down and arguably cost them a victory when he received a straight red card for an awful two-footed challenge on Dominguez.

21 P. Dybala - Like Morata, the usually impressive Argentine found little joy going forward and was unable to cause the Gladbach defence too many problems, resulting in him being hauled off shortly after the hour mark.

9 Álvaro Morata - It was a difficult night for the Spaniard, who looked good on a few occasions but was largely anonymous and ineffectual.

Substitutes

16 J. Cuadrado
- Defended well after coming on for Dybala and looked bright on the rare occasions that he was able to push forward on the break.

15 A. Barzagli - Came on to help Juventus hold on to a point and did exactly that with a good defensive display.

18 M. Lemina - Featured late on and impressed in his short time on the pitch.
