Icardi: ‘Juventus? Never say never…’

Oct 15, 2015

Mauro Icardi admits playing for Juventus after Inter would be “a bit ugly” but “never say never”.

The Nerazzurri face their rivals from Turin in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday, and Icardi spoke to Mediaset about the fixture.

“It’s a game where we have to do well and confirm the work we’ve done during the week,” the striker explained.

“My goals against Juve? It’s one of those things, I even scored against Juventus with my chest last year.

“Joining the Bianconeri? Never say never, but playing here and then at Juventus would be a bit ugly.”

Stankovic: ‘Inter are favourites’

http://www.football-italia.net/74358/stankovic-%E2%80%98inter-are-favourites%E2%80%99?

Oct 15, 2015

Team manager Dejan Stankovic believes Inter are favourites going into the Derby d’Italia against Juventus.

The Nerazzurri are eight points clear of the defending champions, but have not won this fixture at San Siro since 2010.

“The Derby d’Italia is a game you always want to win,” Stankovic told reporters as he visited Expo in Milan.

“Roberto Mancini has plenty of players to choose from now that they’re coming back from international duty.

“We’re above Juve in the table and we need to assume the responsibility that comes with being favourites and play with a clear head and lots of passion.

“I’ve played against Juve many times. I remember that amazing goal by Maicon, where he did a few kick-ups on the edge of the box before smashing it home.

“This is the hardest thing about not playing. But it’ll be a great match, a hard-fought match, with a good mix of technique, tactics, mental strength and heart.”

Kondogbia: 'Pogba brother-enemy'

http://www.football-italia.net/74369/kondogbia-pogba-brother-enemy?

Oct 15, 2015

Geoffrey Kondogbia said Paul Pogba “is like a brother, but for 90 minutes we’ll be enemies” during Inter v Juventus.

The Derby d’Italia kicks off at San Siro on Sunday at 20.45 CET, 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“This is an important week and a big game against Juventus. We are concentrated on the match and want to win for our fans,” Kondogbia told Inter Channel.

“The break for international duty was important and I think every single day of training we get is precious. We must be ready with our minds and our legs.

“Pogba is like a brother to me, but for 90 minutes we’ll be enemies on the pitch this weekend.”

They have been teammates for France all the way through the youth levels.

Jovetic: Inter cannot be fooled by Juventus 'crisis'

The forward is refusing to underestimate the Bianconeri, but admitted
he had been close to a move to Turin in 2013 before opting for Manchester City.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italian-football/2015/10/15/16354192/-?

Oct 15, 2015

Stevan Jovetic has urged Inter not to fall for any talk of a Juventus crisis ahead of Sunday's Derby d'Italia date with the Italian champions.

Roberto Mancini's team were knocked off top spot in Serie A by Fiorentina in the previous round of fixtures but still hold an eight-point advantage over their Turin-based rivals.

But Nerazzurri summer arrival Jovetic insists it would be foolish to underestimate Massimiliano Allegri's men despite their difficulties, although he hopes to add to their woes by claiming all three points in the clash at San Siro.

"Physically, I'm fine and I'll be ready to play. We will have to be careful as they are a good team and I do not trust those who talk of a crisis," Jovetic, who had been struggling with a hamstring injury in recent weeks, told Tuttosport.

"The fans want us to win against Juventus and we want to please them."

The 25-year-old joined Inter on loan from Manchester City in July with a view to a permanent transfer, but revealed that he came close to becoming a Juve player when he departed Fiorentina in 2013.

"Before moving to Manchester City there was strong interest from [former Juve boss Antonio] Conte," he said.

"In the end I preferred England and absolutely do not regret the choice, even if that adventure didn't go well - [Manchester City coach Manuel] Pellegrini always preferred others over me.

"But there I had the opportunity to fight for the title that we won. I hope to repeat this [winning Serie A] with Inter too."

Despite his Scudetto aspirations, the Montenegro international admitted that firing Inter back into the Champions League was his main aim, and hopes to replicate the success Andriy Shevchenko achieved at rivals AC Milan.

"Qualifying for the Champions League is our main objective," he concluded.

"With the Scudetto we will see with time how the situation evolves.

"My dream is to replicate what has been done by my idol Shevchenko in Milan - I want to win everything."

Khedira: 'Can't wait for Inter'

http://www.football-italia.net/74371/khedira-cant-wait-inter?

Oct 15, 2015

Sami Khedira “can’t wait” for Juventus to face Inter in the Derby d’Italia on Sunday evening.

“We are focused only on the game,” he told Sky and Mediaset Premium.

“We know full well that it’s going to be a difficult match, but we absolutely must get a result and play a good game.

“We haven’t started well, but this way the campaign becomes an even more exciting challenge. We are prepared to face it.

“Inter had a strong start to the campaign, but Juventus are a great team with excellent players and a lot of quality.

“We have a strong midfield, but that’s not all. We’re in great shape, training well and can’t wait to play on Sunday.”

The Bianconeri will then take on Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, looking for a third consecutive victory.

“The Champions League is exciting, but at this moment we’re concentrated on Serie A. Right now that is the most important thing. We can’t wait to get back on top of the table.”

Juventus' creativity the path
to a derby win over Inter Milan

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/juventus/111/blog/post/2664846/juventus-creativity-the-path-to-derby-win-vs-inter-milan?

Oct 15, 2015

The most anticipated of Serie A matches, when the league resumes this weekend, Inter will host Juventus in the Derby d'Italia with both sides needing a win to demonstrate strength.

Animosity still simmers between these two giants of Italian football. Their history is one of distasteful rivalry that has provoked a thousand emotions and scandals, and when the time comes to take to the field on Sunday evening, glory will be their only objective.

These past few years, Juventus have turned Serie A into a predictable league, winning all before them as both Milanese giants suffered with so many coaching and personnel changes. This year, a little unpredictability has set pulses racing as Italy stands by to see what has become of the once strong Juve, now in 12th place, while Fiorentina and Inter look down at them from their lofty positions at the top of the table.

Perhaps the greatest of challenges will help resurrect the Old Lady's fighting spirit and get her back to winning ways. With several of her stars back to fitness, together they hope to recover the monotony of winning, that predictable edge to their game that has seen them win endless games.

The question is: which Inter will they be facing? The side that has relied on the individual brilliance of Stevan Jovetic in their early matches, or the cumbersome team that conceded four to Fiorentina in which they looked psychologically lost in their last match. Inter are a team searching for their own identity and are liable to suffer from teething problems, but in the words of Fabio Capello, "they are making wine out of the grapes they have."

Coached by a self-confessed Juventus fan, Roberto Mancini's Nerazzurri side may not be the most beautiful to watch but they have been efficient. A squad renowned for its physicality as opposed to technical beauty, Mancini's first priority since his arrival at the club was to secure a defence that had conceded too many goals for too many years. It is perhaps why his back-line is given plenty of support from a physical midfield, one that boasts muscle and cynicism, but perhaps not enough creativity.

Towards the end of September, after Inter had beaten Verona to collect five wins out of five, giornalaccio rosa dello Sport dedicated their front page to the Nerazzurri with a headline that read, "The beauty of being ugly." The team, up until that point, had managed four 1-0 victories and conceded only one goal, to newly promoted Carpi, in a match they again won via small margins.

Perhaps Fiorentina's style of play and subsequent win can inspire Massimiliano Allegri's Juve. Playing with pace and agility, their fluid beauty destroyed the ugly physicality of Inter's game, exposing the slow movements of Mancini's men.

A loss at San Siro and the Bianconeri can all but give up on the idea of another domestic title this season. A grudge match against a physical side looking for blood will be interesting, as will the coming together of two different playing ideals.

When Juventus allowed Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo to leave, it was because they felt they could depend on a new magnificent trio in midfield that perfectly balanced intelligence, creativity and cynicism. Paul Pogba, Claudio Marchisio and Sami Khedira were the way forward, but due to various injuries, all three have been unable to play together to prove how well the team can move towards the future.

In the Derby d'Italia, Allegri will finally get a chance to deploy the side he's been waiting to play all season; one that will feature experience and speed down the wings, intelligence and balance through the middle and youthful exuberance up top. On Sunday night in Milan, the Old Lady and all her new stars will take their place for the first time, together.

Whichever Nerazzurri team they face, the Bianconeri would do well to remember they are not far off from recovering their best form. In fact, they produce more shots on target than Mancini's men and have even conceded less shots on goal, their only problem is efficiency, making their superiority count.

A match between two teams that have long despised one another, the many individuals within the respective sides will also have a point to prove. With both Mancini and Allegri supporting Juve since childhood, which Juventino will win the tactical battle? With Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala both looked upon as the future of Argentina, which forward will control the game? Who out of the French youngsters will steal the limelight in midfield and can Felipe Melo exact revenge on his old side? On Sunday night, we will finally get some answers.

Perisic: 'Juve not like Bayern'

http://www.football-italia.net/74382/perisic-juve-not-bayern?

Oct 16, 2015

Inter's Ivan Perisic believes a loss won't knock Juventus out of the Scudetto, and reveals: 'They're not as imposing as Bayern Munich.'

The Croatian was among the new players selected for Coach Roberto Mancini to build his new Inter, and his most recent success includes qualifying his country for Euro 2016.

“I'm doing great, it was such a great joy,” he told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport. “Now I can concentrate exclusively on Inter.

“As soon as I got to the Pinetina, I thanked [Andrea] Ranocchia and [Davide] Santon.

“I knew Italy was going to beat Norway. My country and yours deserved Euro 2016 more than their rivals.”

Perisic then went on to discuss the imminent clash against Juventus on Sunday.

“We're second, we're playing at home and we want to win at all costs.

“If we were to win we'd do a favour to all our rivals too.

“They wouldn't be knocked out of the Scudetto race though. There are still 30 games and they showed in the last few years that they were the best.

“Last summer I thought that three of their most important men were leaving [Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Carlos Tevez]. But they did pick up some other strong players.

“Let's hope it'll take them a little longer still to find their balance.

“Inter? It was their new project that attracted me. They lifted the Champions League cup five years ago, it's a club that made history.

“And we can take advantage of the fact that we're not playing the cups, which drain stamina from our opponents.

“Having the time to train together and know each other is essential in the new project. It's best to spend one year without cups and then get into the Champions League than to spend two years in the Europa League.

“If you'd told me we'd have 16 points after 7 games, I'd have taken that. I wouldn't take the final third place though, nor even the second.

“I was already second last season with Wolfsburg. I left Germany among other things because I understood that competing with Bayern was impossible.

“We were discussing an extension. For a few months they not only failed to sign the two, three men that would allow them to take a leap forwards in quality, they also lost some indispensable elements.

“When De Bruyne told me that he was leaving, that cleared every doubt.

“There is much more balance here, I see 7-8 teams capable of going all the way.”

'Inter upgrade to beat Juve'

http://www.football-italia.net/74383/inter-upgrade-beat-juve?

Oct 16, 2015

Ivan Perisic believes Juventus will 'not win the Scudetto', but Inter must still 'level up substantially' to beat them.

This Sunday's match between the two Italian giants could be decisive in the Scudetto race and, alongside Napoli-Fiorentina, represents the highlight of Week 8 in Serie A.

“It's too early to say who will win the Scudetto, but I feel there's going to be a surprise,” he told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport. “Juventus won't win it.

“I don't like to make game forecasts or point to match winners, but to beat them we'll need our hearts, our heads, and a touch of luck.

“They're an excellent group. Though [Paul] Pogba stands out.

“Our rivalry? I was too young at the times of Calciopoli. I'm interested in the pitch.

“But I can tell it's a special game by a few factors, including the way my friends are asking for tickets.

“To think that the derby had already given me some indescribable emotions!

“The Inter we had at the beginning of the season won't be enough to beat Juventus. We'll have to level up quite a bit. The supporters at San Siro can lend us a great hand.”

Inter seemed set to be the Scudetto favourites before Fiorentina crushed them 4-1.

“That match must be a lesson for us, even though it was an isolate case. That night was damned, starting from the injury to [stevan] Jovetic in training.

“That convinced [Coach Roberto] Mancini to change his playing system. Many of us were playing out of position.

“We took a goal right off, and the red card for Miranda was the last drop.

“My favourite position is left winger. Until the age of 14 I was a classical poacher.

“My relationship with Mancini? It's good. He's the boss and you have to listen to him. He's teaching me a lot, even from a tactical point of view.”

Giovinco backs Juve vs Inter

http://www.football-italia.net/74387/giovinco-backs-juve-vs-inter?

Oct 16, 2015

Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco hopes Juventus beat Inter on Sunday, while claiming 'the Azzurri compensate for what I lost in Serie A'.

The Derby d'Italia has the media already abuzz, and comments are coming from as far as Major League Soccer, where the former Bianconero emigrated.

“It's going to be a difficult game,” Giovinco told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport. “But I hope my former teammates can beat the Nerazzurri.

“It would be important to climb back up the standings a little bit.

“It's hard to say whether a loss would compromise the Scudetto campaign. Of course the distance from the top would widen, but the season is still only starting out.

“I haven't followed all of Juve's matches, often my training takes place during their games.

“The team is very different, they lost important players like Pirlo, Tevez and Vidal, and it's a tough void to fill.

“Now the club is moving in a different way and it's logical that they would need some time to absorb the new tactics.

“It takes some patience. People in Torino are used to good results, but they must understand the circumstance.

“Rumours of a link between me and Inter? I don't know anything about it.”

The Atomic Ant was then asked where he would watch the game.

“That depends on the schedule of training. Maybe at home, or with a few friends at the pub.

“Do I miss games like these? Of course. But there's the national team that compensates for strong emotions like those of Serie A games.

“My favourite strikers in Inter and Juve are Icardi and Morata. They're great.

“I hope Juve wins. My forecast? Let's say 2-1 for the Bianconeri.”

'Inter lighter heart than Juve'

http://www.football-italia.net/74391/inter-lighter-heart-juve?

Oct 16, 2015

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti backs his team: 'Juventus have everything to lose, we are more light-hearted'.

The 70-year-old saw his team flounder in the first season after his sale to Erick Thohir, but heading into this Sunday's Derby d'Italia they face a struggling rival.

“I didn't expect Juve to be in so much trouble,” he told Tuttosport. “It's true that they've lost important players like [Andrea] Pirlo, [Arturo] Vidal and [Carlos] Tevez, but above all they've been very unlucky in individual episodes.

“Juve will play a serious game, I'm convinced of that, and we'll do the same.

“But I wouldn't place Inter and Juve on the same level. Even though we're further ahead in the standings, we can play with a lighter heart.

“And usually, when it comes to games like this or like a derby, whoever comes in most light-hearted also ends up playing well.

“This is an important game for Juventus. Considering the standings, they can't afford to make mistakes.

“Should they go to -11, the situation would become heavy. For us, instead, the priority is not losing.

“But there's more. The game is a test of our maturity. And we have to pass it.

“I'm sure that the players are preparing the game properly. [Coach Roberto] Mancini is good and he's doing some good work.”

Apparently, Inter supporters say that when Mauro Icardi is on the pitch, the game starts from 1-0 for the Nerazzurri.

“I hope that's true, and I hope he can confirm his skills again.

“Mauro is a great striker and a serious lad. And he's the classic player who does best in the great games.”

Mancini: 'Juve still Italy's best'

http://www.football-italia.net/74394/mancini-juve-still-italys-best?

Oct 16, 2015

Roberto Mancini says 'Juventus are still the best in Italy', but beating them would 'give Inter's season a direction'.

The Nerazzurri Coach held the reins at the top of Serie A for the first six weeks, but lost it to Fiorentina.

“Serie A is a very difficult championship,” he told BBC World Service for their broadcast World Football. “This year we'll have to wait another three or four months for the values to be defined.

“But give it another ten games and the best teams will emerge. After four years of victories and having lost three crucial players, a rough start for Juventus was to be expected.

“But in the end they'll still be competing for the title. When they can count on all of their players, Juventus are still the best team in Italy.

“And on Sunday they'll have Claudio Marchisio and Alvaro Morata available again.”

The Biscione is not engaged in the international cups, which could give them an edge in terms of form.

“We'd rather be playing the Champions League of course, but I think that not being there could admittedly be an advantage.

“Maybe not right now, but in December-January it could probably help us if we can stay at the top.

“Winning the Scudetto? Why not, we hope so. It's possible, we have a good team with some good players. The next few games are going to be very important.

“On Sunday there's the Derby d'Italia, it's the most important game in the championship.

“I hope it's going to be a good match. We're second and they're in mid-table, this is an important game for them, too.

“Inter haven't beaten Juventus at San Siro in five years. I hope our time has come, because beating Juventus would allow us to give a direction to our season.”

Melo: ‘Mistake to join Juventus’

http://www.football-italia.net/74404/melo-%E2%80%98mistake-join-juventus%E2%80%99?

Oct 16, 2015

Inter midfielder Felipe Melo admits joining Juventus “was a mistake”, but isn’t writing them off in the Derby d’Italia.

The Brazilian spent two seasons with the Bianconeri, joining from Fiorentina in 2009, but admits he regrets the move.

“I’ve returned to embrace an old love,” Melo told La Repubblica of his move to Inter.

“Seven years ago I could have become an Inter player. [Jose] Mourinho wanted me, and I wanted him. In the end I went to Fiorentina, then to Juventus and then Galatasaray, where I won a lot.

“God wanted me here, so in the end I closed the circle. Juve was a mistake, I’d have been better going to Inter, I’d have won the treble.

“On Sunday I expect an opponent who deserves respect, they’re not dead.”

Inter host Juventus at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday evening in Serie A in the first Derby D’Italia of the season.

Roberto Mancini’s side have hit the ground running this season, as they sit just two points adrift of the top of the Serie A table. That said, the team have stuttered a bit off late with a loss and a draw in their last two Serie A games, including a heavy defeat to table topping Fiorentina.

Juventus, on the other hand, are languishing in 12th place in Serie A on eight points but a win on Sunday could see them move into the top half of the table.

The Bianconeri fans are, however, a bit more optimistic than they were a few weeks ago as their team have won two games on a trot in all competitions with victories over Sevilla and Bologna respectively.

The Nerazzurri, despite putting up a commendable defensive display on a consistent basis, have been criticized for the lack of goals. This is pretty evident in the fact that Mancini’s side have scored one goal less than Juventus, with just eight goals far this season in Serie A.

Last season two Argentinians scored as Juve drew 1-1 against Inter at the Juventus Stadium with Mauro Icardi cancelling out an early Carlos Tevez strike. At the San Siro meanwhile the Bianconeri won 2-1 thanks to a late Alvaro Morata effort.

A worry for Mancini will be Felipe Melo, who is a doubt for the clash due to a muscular trouble. Dodo and Danilo D’Ambrosio are still out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri will be raring to unleash the in-form Alvaro Morata, who has three goals so far this season in all competitions, especially against a team who have conceded five times, four in one game, in their previous two Serie A fixtures.

That said, the Old Lady will yet again be without the services of centre-forward Mario Mandzukic and Stephan Lichtsteiner due to injury. Morata and Paul Pogba were both injured on international duty but are expected to be fit for the game at the San Siro. Juve have also received a huge boost in the form of Claudio Marchisio who is likely to return to the starting lineup.

Form Guide: Inter (L-D-L-W-W) Juventus (W-W-L-D-W)

Expected Staring XIs

Inter:

Handanovic; Juan Jesus, Miranda, Murillo, Santon; Melo, Medel, Guarin; Perisic, Jovetic, Icardi.

Juventus:

Inter Milan play host to Juventus on Sunday evening looking to register a sixth win of the campaign that would also put the Nerazzurri 11 points clear of last year's champions.

Juventus are still smarting from suffering as many defeats in seven games as they did during the whole of last season, but a win on Sunday would move the Bianconeri back into contention.

Inter Milan

After guiding Inter to eighth place last season, Roberto Mancini began this campaign with added responsibility on his shoulders to earn the club a return to the European stage, but their opening seven games have suggested that they should perhaps be aiming higher.

Five victories from seven outings, which have also included four clean sheets, have left Inter sitting in second spot behind Fiorentina during the international break, and there is renewed optimism at the club that they can at least finish in the top three for the first time since 2011.

The 4-1 humbling by Fiorentina brought Mancini and his squad back down to earth to a certain extent, but that defeat stemmed from three goals being scored in the opening 23 minutes and Miranda being dismissed on the half-hour mark. Inter were poor on that day, but it could be considered a freak spell given that it is the only blot on their copybook.

Earning a point away at Sampdoria was deemed a respectable result given that the hosts had previously won three successive matches at home, but Inter will be keen to get back to winning ways, despite Juventus providing the opposition.

The defending champions have been below par on the domestic scene but their performances in the Champions League have proven that they still possess plenty of quality, and if Inter can claim maximum points on Sunday, they will be making a huge statement to their closest rivals.

Juventus

Despite losing the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez during the summer, Juventus would have still expected to be in the upper echelons of Serie A during the middle of October, so three defeats in seven domestic fixtures will have come as a shock.

However, their disappointing start has perhaps been a blessing in disguise. With four consecutive league crowns to their name, complacency was potentially one of the factors that resulted in them losing three times in five weeks, and their performances on the European scene have suggested that there is no shortage of ability or desire in Turin.

Triumphs over Manchester City and Sevilla remain the highlights of Juve's season, but their 3-1 comeback win against Bologna before the international break enabled the club to turn their focus to the teams above them rather than being concerned about an extended stay towards the bottom of the standings.

Beating Bologna will not lead to anyone associated with Juventus getting too carried away, but they will travel to Milan on the back of a success, something that Inter have not experienced since September 23. Boss Massimiliano Allegri will also take confidence from their opponents only scoring more than once in one game this season.

There are doubts surrounding the fitness of a couple of their star players, but if they line up from the start on Sunday evening, Allegri is likely to encourage an offensive display to try to claw back some of the eight-point advantage that Inter currently hold over them.

Team News

Paul Pogba and Alvaro Morata, who were both forced to cut short their time on international duty with France and Spain respectively, took part in training on Thursday afternoon and could play a part this weekend.

Midfielder Claudio Marchisio could also be involved, but both Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mario Mandzukic will be absent from the squad.

Hernanes, who joined Juventus from Inter during the summer, is likely to start on the bench against his former side.

Mancini has doubts over the fitness of former Juve man Felipe Melo, who is suffering from a muscle problem, but Stevan Jovetic, who this week claimed that he came close to joining Juventus earlier in his career, should start in attack as he looks to regain his scoring touch.

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:
Handanovic; Juan Jesus, Murillo, Miranda, Santon; Medel, Melo, Guarin; Perisic, Jovetic, Icardi

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Buffon; Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli; Evra, Pogba, Marchisio, Khedira, Cuadrado; Dybala, Morata

Head To Head

In the past 46 matches between the two teams, Juventus have recorded double the number of victories as Inter, with 20 wins being earned compared to 10 for Milan.

Since October 2010, a five-year period which has seen 10 fixtures being played, Juventus have won six times and suffered just the one setback.

Last season's match at San Siro took place in May, with a late Morata goal giving Juve the three points.

We say: Inter Milan 1-2 Juventus

Despite Inter producing the better results and performances since the start of the season, the recent matches between the two teams must be taken into consideration. Juventus have not lost on their last five visits to San Siro to play Inter, and we are backing that trend to continue with the visitors potentially having the firepower to grind out a win.

juventus.pngJuventus

Is this a must win game? Technically not, because we are only at the 8th match day, but I think symbolically it is, for various reasons. First of all, every game against Inter is a must win game, period. Secondly, Juventus must rapidly close the eight-point gap from the arch-rivals. Finally, Juventus have already badly botched two big games against Roma and Napoli, and it’s time to make a statement after a stuttering start. It’s safe to say that the schedule has not been particularly kind with all these difficult matches on the road, but I guess the silver lining is that we will host them when things get more significant later in the season.

It’s been a frightening international break, but luckily there have been no major repercussions. Alvaro Morata did not fracture his fibula as first feared and the ankle sprain that forced Paul Pogba to leave the France camp is not severe. Both are expected to start, but we will know more about them after the pre-game presser by Massimiliano Allegri tomorrow.

The irony: Martin Caceres has been reinstated after his car crash, but in the meantime he has suffered an ankle sprain while playing with Uruguay because of a tackle with Juan Cuadrado. It’s a bummer since El Pelado would be perfect in this fluid 3-5-2 where the right centre-back often acts as a right back: I think everybody would agree that Caceres is a better fullback than Andrea Barzagli. Stephen Lichtsteiner remains sidelined as he is following a protocol to heal properly from his heart condition, the latest reports say that he could return in mid November. Roberto Pereyra has a hip muscular problem and his availability is in serious doubt. Mario Mandzukic has trained with the rest of group, a sign that he has recovered from the thigh strain, but we will see if he is fit enough to be called up. Of course, the biggest news of the week is that Claudio Marchisio is ready to go after his second physical problem of the season, hopefully the last one as Il Principino has never been injury prone.

After the break, you usually have to factor in the long travels by South Americans, who have returned only on Thursday, and consider resting them. I don’t think Juventus have that luxury with Paulo Dybala and especially Juan Cuadrado. Juventus are still without a right back, so 3-5-2 is pretty much the only option: I don’t think Allegri would dare putting Barzagli or Padoin there in a straight 4-3-1-2 formation.

Juventus should be able to field something very close to an ideal XI, with BBC in front of Buffon, Sami Khedira partnering for the first time with Marchisio and Pogba in the midfield, Cuadrado and Patrice Evra on the flanks, Dybala and Morata upfront. If Pogba and Morata are not considered healthy enough to contribute, Mario Lemina or Hernanes and Simone Zaza would take their places.

Probable lineup 3-5-2

Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Cuadrado, Khedira, Marchisio, Pogba, Evra; Morata, Dybala.

Injuries

Lichtsteiner (heart condition), Pereyra (hip), Caceres (ankle).

inter.png  Inter Milan

Inter have come down to earth in the last two matches after an explosive start. They had not really steamrolled anybody even before the two stumbles: they barely beat Chievo, Hellas Verona and Milan and they triumphed thanks to late goals against Carpi and Atalanta, but at least they got job done. The match against Fiorentina was kind of fluky as it was ruined by early gaffes, while they played decently against Sampdoria but also were pretty exposed by Blucerchiati’s counter-attacking game.

Inter have not been particularly impressive in terms of style of play and rhythm. They are a very physical team who can control the pace, is pretty good in defending and always finds a way to score because they have terrific weapons at disposal. It looks like an early José Mourinho squad.

During the break they have recovered Stevan Jovetic who has been battling some weird stuff, a thigh problem but also some back pain, all caused by a posture imperfection that will continue to nag him. The Montenegrin forward has been their best player so far, with three goals in five matches and especially he adds that little zing in the attack that nobody else in their roster has.

Roberto Mancini should opt once again for 4-3-1-2. He had hinted in the past that he could use a three-man defense once Gary Medel, Miranda and Jeison Murillo would all be available, but this is probably not the right game for experimenting. Moreover, he used 3-5-2 a little against Fiorentina, but that did not produce any good result.

Their only long-term injured player is Nemanja Vidic, who has had back surgery and that will not see in an Inter jersey until January (or ever…). They have a couple of banged up midfielders: Felipe Melo missed a practice with muscle fatigue while Geoffrey Kondogbia spent the break dealing with an ankle injury. At this point, it looks like the French ace will sit, with the former Juventus playing as pivot and the versatile Medel on his side, with Fredy Guarin completing the midfield. Anyway, any combination of these four is possible for Sunday.

There has been some chatter about switching to 4-2-3-1 so Ivan Perisic can be used in his natural position, as he is not playing up to his potential as no. 10. The Croatian winger performed very well when he was moved to the lete flank late in the Sampdoria game and with his national team. However, the only viable option as right winger is Jonathan Biabiany. The defense should be composed by Davide Santon, Miranda, Murillo and probably Juan Jesus: Alex Telles has a chance to starting at left-back, he is a decent player with good feet but he tends to get lost when he is obliged to defend a lot and Juventus field on that flank one of their most effective weapon, Cuadrado. The main threat comes from Mauro Icardi, who has always scored when he has faced Juventus, dating back to his Sampdoria days: he has tallied six goals in five matches against the Old Lady.

Probable lineup 4-3-1-2:

Handanovic; Santon, Miranda, Murillo, Jesus; Medel, Melo, Guarin; Perisic; Jovetic, Icardi.

Injuries

Vidic (back).

Juventus to return to 3-5-2?

Oct 16, 2015

Juventus look set to return to a 3-5-2 shape for the Derby d’Italia with Inter on Sunday evening.

The Bianconeri have been deploying a three-man defence during training at Vinovo in recent days, with just one session to go before the match.

Gigi Buffon will take his customary place in goal, with Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in defence.

The enforced absence of both Martin Caceres and Stephan Lichtsteiner is likely to mean Juan Caudrado starts at right wing-back, with Patrice Evra on the other side.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri has a full midfield to choose from for the first time this season, so Sami Khedira, Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio should all start.

Pogba is the only doubt, as he suffered an ankle injury on France duty, so Hernanes will start if the youngster is not fully recovered.

Up-front, Alvaro Morata is likely to partner Paulo Dybala, with Simone Zaza ready to come on if a more direct approach is needed.

Probable Juventus team to face Inter:

Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Cuadrado, Khedira, Marchisio, Pogba, Evra; Morata, Dybala.

Inter - Juventus Preview: Kondogbia out
to defeat 'brother' Pogba

Summer singing from Monaco Geoffrey Kondogbia is keen to guide Inter to victory
when they take on Juventus in Sunday's Derby d'Italia at San Siro.

Geoffrey Kondogbia will put his brotherly friendship with Paul Pogba to one side as Inter look to compound Juventus' stuttering start to the Serie A season with a Derby d'Italia win.

Roberto Mancini's men started the 2015-16 campaign in fine fashion, winning their opening five fixtures, but collected just one point from their two games prior to the international break.

Inter have subsequently dropped to second in the table, although they still hold an eight-point lead over Juventus - and Kondogbia is keen to increase the gap at the weekend.

"This is a very important week for Inter. The match against Juventus is huge and we are fully focused on winning this one," Kondogbia told reporters.

"We are determined to win this one, for the fans and for ourselves.

"The break was important for the team. We have used each training session to fully recover and now we have to be ready both physically and mentally.

"Pogba is like a brother to me, but that won't count for anything on the pitch. We will be enemies for the full 90 minutes."

Inter have little reason for optimism if their recent record against Juventus is anything to go by.

Juventus' last Serie A defeat to Inter at San Siro came in April 2010 and the reigning champions are unbeaten in the last five league games against their arch-rivals.

It is not all good news for Massimiliano Allegri's men, though.

Two wins and as many draws from their seven Serie A games this term, represents the worst start to a season for Juventus since 1980-81, with their bid for a fifth successive Scudetto already fading.

"I don't think it's the last chance for us," midfielder Sami Khedira told Mediaset.

"There's still a long way to go this season. We're aware of our qualities, it will be a 50-50 encounter.

"If we get chances we have to take them, because there won't be many opportunities to score."

Inter striker Mauro Icardi has proven a thorn in Juventus' side, scoring six goals against the Turin side since January 2013. No other player has scored more than three goals against the Bianconeri in the same period.

Yet there are also reasons for optimism for Allegri.

After an unimpressive start to the season, Juventus have won four out of their last six matches in all competitions, seeing them climb to 12th place in the Serie A table.

Alvaro Morata and Pogba are doubtful for Sunday's encounter after picking up knocks while away on international duty, but could be match fit in time for the derby.

Stephan Lichtsteiner and Martin Caceres, however, have both been ruled out of the match at San Siro.

OPTA FACTS

This will be the 165 th Serie A meeting between Inter and Juventus: Inter have won 45 times, Juventus 78 (D41).

Juventus are unbeaten in the last five league games against Inter (W3, D2).

In the last six Serie A meetings between Inter and Juventus, both teams have scored.

Juventus’ last Serie A defeat against Inter at San Siro came in April 2010 (W3, D2).

Inter have gained only one point after a run of six games won (including last season).

Inter have conceded four goals in their last game played at San Siro, against Fiorentina, after three 1-0 in a row at home.

Juventus have conceded goal in 10 of their last 11 league games.

Two games won and two draws in the first seven Serie A seasonal games: the worst start for Juventus since 1980/81 (they won the league in that season).

The Derby D'Italia is upon us, and this time the narrative
surrounding the game is loaded with subplots and intrigue.

Much has been said about Roberto Mancini’s latest Inter's merits, quality of play and potential to challenge for the Scudetto. What is for sure is that while the Nerazzurri have shown solidity and compactness in defence, they've been unable to realise their potential in attack.

Barring Stefan Jovetic's possible inability to recover from his thigh strain, Mancini will have a full squad to pick from, and while the defensive selection is clear, the Inter midfield selection is slightly more complex. For weeks now, Inter's preferred central defensive pairing has been missing at least one of the duo, now that both Joao Miranda and Jeison Murillo are available, Gary Medel will be available to return to the midfield, but at whose expense?

For the first time this season, Max Allegri will have a near full squad at his disposal. The return of Claudio Marchisio from his long term injury will be a very welcome relief as he's expected to bring much needed balance and experience to the Bianconeri midfield.

It is difficult to predict which Juve will show up for game, the high flying one of the Champions League or the misfiring one of the Serie A so far. Adding to the ambiguity is the fact that this is the first time La Vecchia Signora will start with this midfield module.

Allegri will have no doubt seen Inter's trouble at dealing with width against Fiorentina and so Juan Cuadrado will probably be a protagonist for Juve going forward. Conversely, Juve's inability to break down organised defences along with their vulnerability on the break will provide Inter with much encouragement.

Inter need this win the maintain the positive momentum to their league start and strengthen their title challenging credentials, while Juve know that a loss at the Meazza can send them further away from the top of the table making a proper title defense more and more difficult.

Keep an eye on: Ivan Perisic (Inter) – The Croatia winger finally scored his fist goal in an Inter Jersey against Sampdoria last week and subsequently scored in each game with Croatia during the international break. If he can maintain this form, expect him to be a handful for Juve backline.

Form Guide: Inter (D L W W W) Juventus (W L D W D)

Last season: Inter 1-1 Juventus

Stat fact:
With just eight goals scored so far, Inter have the joint lowest scoring record among the Serie A's top ten teams so far. Juve, sitting in twelveth place, have scored one more than Inter.

Inter Milan vs. Juventus:
Team News, Predicted Lineups

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2579033-inter-milan-vs-juventus-team-news-predicted-lineups-live-stream-tv-info?

Oct 17, 2015

As domestic football resumes following the international break, Serie A throws up one of the continent’s most hostile fixtures as Juventus travel to Milan to take on Inter. The two clubs have a longstanding rivalry, dating back to the 1960s when their meetings became known as “the derby of Italy.”

Having started out the 2015/16 campaign with five consecutive victories, the Nerazzurri are vastly improved from last term, and coach Roberto Mancini told reporters at a recent event what he expects on Sunday evening, per Football Italia:

I’m sure it will be a great evening between two great teams. Now we have to play like Inter. We’ll prepare as we always do, it’s a historic match, which automatically brings motivation, and also the Derby d’Italia has become very unique in recent years because of all the controversies which have broken out.

We have to be well prepared, because it brings particular pressures with it.

For their part, Juventus appear to have turned a corner after their own poor start to the campaign. Comfortable wins over Sevilla and Bologna have them back on track, and it will be a vital match for Hernanes to show his quality.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
I've two main reasons for coming here: to challenge for honours and to play Champions League football.

The Brazilian midfielder moved from Inter to Juve just as the summer transfer window closed, and he explained his reasons for the switch in a question-and-answer session on the club’s official website. His importance to the team was discussed in this previous post, and three points against his former team will be vital as the Bianconeri look to climb the table.

Currently in 12th place, continuing their current run while taking points away from one of the early leaders would be a hugely significant result. Coach Massimiliano Allegri will be aware of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach, but the focus must solely be on taking care of business in this encounter.

Probable Formations

ca5bffe1da084211a9f470ef7997bdf6_origina

Inter (4-3-1-2):
Samir Handanovic; Davide Santon, Jeison Murillo, Joao Miranda, Alex Telles; Fredy Guarin, Felipe Melo, Geoffrey Kondogbia; Ivan Perisic; Mauro Icardi, Rodrigo Palacio

Unavailable: Dodo, Danilo D’Ambrosio (both injured)

Juventus (4-3-3):
Gigi Buffon; Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Patrice Evra, Sami Khedira, Hernanes, Paul Pogba, Juan Cuadrado; Alvaro Morata, Paulo Dybala

Unavailable: Martin Caceres, Stephan Lichtsteiner (both injured)

Key Battle

Looking for the matchup that will decide this clash is fairly straightforward. Mauro Icardi has scored six goals in five career appearances against the Bianconeri, stemming back to his time with Sampdoria.

The 22-year-old was Serie A’s joint leading scorer last term, following up his tally of 22 league goals with another two goals already this term while also becoming the Nerazzurri captain. His ability is undeniable, and Giorgio Chiellini will have his work cut out stopping the deadly Argentinian on Sunday evening.

OptaPaolo ✔ @OptaPaolo
64 - Mauro Icardi has scored a goal every 64 mins against Juventus in Serie A (6 goals in 381 minutes played against bianconeri). Bomber.

The Juventus defender has been in good form, but he will need to be fully alert to the danger Icardi poses if his side are to emerge victorious at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Player to Watch

While Inter’s young Argentinian striker is key to their hopes, the visitors will be hoping Paulo Dybala can continue his own impressive form. The 21-year-old—who weighed in with 13 goals and 10 assists in 2014/15—has made a good start in Turin, netting four times in his first eight appearances.

Alvaro Morata and Mario Mandzukic may miss this encounter through injury, which will only serve to heighten the pressure on Dybala, who made his international debut earlier this week.

Yet the player himself is far more concerned with the result rather than his own impact, as he told reporters shortly after Juve’s win over Bologna. “There’s a great togetherness in this group,” Dybala said, per the official club website.” We simply want to win, it doesn’t matter who scores.”

Odds (via Odds Shark)

Away win: 211-100

Home win: 147-100

Draw: 219-100

Murillo feels Inter-Juve rivalry

Jeison Murillo claims he “always dreamed” of playing for Inter and knows all about the rivalry with Juventus.

The Derby d’Italia kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“When I was a child, a school close to my home was part of the Inter Campus project,” the Colombian international told Libero newspaper.

“There were many kids from all over Colombia, as we didn’t just play football there, we met with different cultures. They’d give us Inter jerseys and autographed pictures of the players. When you’re a kid, that really creates a bond with a team.

“Inter have always meant a lot to me and they were my family’s favourite team. Ivan Ramiro Cordoba played here too and we’d watch his games. It was always a dream for me to come here.

“It was such an emotional moment to sign for this club. Did Juventus want me in January? You always hear rumours, but I was concentrated only on Granada.”

Murillo will now face Juve tomorrow evening and there’s no doubt this is more than just a game.

“You can sense the rivalry and how much the fans want to win. Fredy Guarin and my teammates told me what this means. I love this kind of match.

“Are Inter stronger than Juventus this season? The statistics do the talking and right now we are ahead of them in the table.

“We’re working to improve our game more every day. You learn something new every day, but I am well aware I need to do more with my left foot.

“If I score against Juventus, I’ll celebrate with the heart gesture for my wife. Would I settle for third place? No, never. You must always target the top.”

Inter - Juventus Betting: Goals at
both ends in the Derby d'Italia

Having seen their defensive invincibility shattered in the last home game, Al Hain-Cole
expects Mancini's men to see plenty of action at both ends against the Bianconeri.

Inter will be attempting to record their first home win over Juventus in over five years when the sides meet at the San Siro in Sunday’s Derby d’Italia.

Having seen their five-match winning streak come to an end with a heavy 4-1 defeat against Fiorentina in their last home game, Roberto Mancini’s side are slight favourites with William Hill to bounce back with a victory here.

The champions have endured a difficult start to the campaign after taking a mere eight points from their opening seven games but are on offer at to kick start the defence of their title by coming out on top in Milan.

Just three of the last 13 encounters between the sides have resulted in draws, but there are odds of available on them cancelling each other out in this one.

After opening the season with five wins from five and just one goal conceded, it came as a major shock to see the Nerazzurri defeated so convincingly against Fiorentina a few weeks ago.

That result seemed to shake the confidence of a previously impenetrable backline, which was beaten yet again away to Sampdoria in the following match before losing 3-1 against second division Swiss side Chiasso in a friendly – albeit without a host of first-team regulars.

Having found the net in each of their last eight fixtures in all competitions, Massimiliano Allegri’s team should feel confident of causing yet more problems for the stuttering home defence.

However, considering they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 Serie A fixtures themselves, the Bianconeri seem unlikely to keep the hosts at bay at the other end of the pitch.

With this in mind, odds of look good on both teams finding the net for the seventh time in seven encounters on Sunday.

Allegri: Inter favourites in Serie A title race

The Juventus coach says Sunday's Derby d'Italia will not be decisive
to the defending champions title hopes, but conceded they are no longer favourites.

Massimiliano Allegri claims Sunday's Derby d'Italia will not be pivotal in keeping Juventus' Scudetto dreams alive despite their poor start to the 2015-16 campaign.

Serie A champions Juve have suffered a dreadful start to their quest for a fifth-straight title, taking just eight points from their seven games so far.

Allegri's team are therefore 10 points behind early leaders Fiorentina, and eight adrift of second-placed Inter, but the former AC Milan boss is calm ahead of this weekend's clash at San Siro.

"This is not going to be a knockout round, nor will it be decisive for the Scudetto," Allegri said. "But it is still the Derby d'Italia and will be a fantastic game to play in. We're certainly not lacking motivation.

"The plan is to be in the running for the title in March and reaching that period in the best form. The statistics do tell us we concede too many goals.

"At this moment the table tells us that Inter are favourites for the Scudetto, then Roma, Napoli, Milan and eventually Juve."

Allegri added that strike duo Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala will face late fitness tests.

He continued: "Mario Mandzukic is in the squad and I'll evaluate his condition, as with Paulo Dybala.

"Having everyone at my disposal means I can allow some rest to those who have played more so far this season.

"There are some internationals who haven't fully recovered yet. Fortunately it's a long campaign, so everyone has time to get back to an acceptable level of fitness."

Mancini: 'Inter-Juve message'

http://www.football-italia.net/74444/mancini-inter-juve-message?

Oct 17, 2015

Roberto Mancini said the performance against Juventus “tells Inter if we can stay up there” in the Scudetto race.

It kicks off on Sunday at 20.45 CET - 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

“As of today, Fiorentina are the favourites as they are top of the table. We are currently second,” said Mancini in his Press conference.

“It is a long campaign and we are sure the strongest teams will get back into the fight for the title. I always said Napoli, Juve and Roma were better equipped for the Scudetto. We’ve started the season well, we are up there and want to fight to the end. That is our objective.

“Tomorrow’s game will be important, but not decisive. A victory would give us a lot of enthusiasm and that is an important element for any team going forward.”

Who is under more pressure at San Siro, Inter or Juventus?

“Juve have won the last four Scudetti and are recovering some players as well as form, so naturally it’s an important game.

“We will all be concentrated to the max and so I expect a strong start. How it’ll end, I don’t know. This performance against Juventus can tell us if we can stay up there for the rest of the campaign. It must help our self-belief.

“There are another 31 rounds left, I doubt there’s a team that will win every single game. There are several sides in great shape at the moment, there will be more defeats and victories for everyone.

“Roma, Napoli and Juve are behind us, so there is some truth in the idea we’re more light-hearted and that would be perfect, but we are fully concentrated too.

“Clearly it would be difficult for Juventus if they lost and were 11 points behind us, plus seven or eight points behind other title contenders. It’d be trickier for them to make up the lost ground. Of course, Juve are a strong side and can notch up a series of positive results in future. They are also in Europe, so it’d be tough, but they are capable of it.”

Mancini was asked about Geoffrey Kondogbia being perhaps tactically naïve in recent outings.

“I don’t think Geoffrey has any particular tactical problems. We can improve and work on the 4-2-3-1 system when we get to play and train more regularly.

“I don’t have any problems with Kondogbia. I’ve always said he’s a great player, I believe in him, but he’s only been in Serie A for a couple of months, so he needs time to settle.

“We kept a high line against Fiorentina and Sampdoria, so clearly you are going to run a few risks, but we know that’s a risk we have to take if we want to control the game and play attacking football.

“When the other team scores goals they did well, but we also made some mistakes. The problem is allowing the full-back to reach the by-line and cross, as we should’ve done something before then.

“We lost Joao Miranda and Jeison Murillo at different times, so they rarely got the chance to play together in defence.

“I have a couple of doubts, mainly to see how the internationals have recovered from their games, so I’ll evaluate everyone today and tomorrow. Gary Medel arrived yesterday, so he is one of those being evaluated.

“Stevan Jovetic worked in the last three training sessions, so he’s feeling much better.”

Mancini was asked whether Juan Jesus or Alex Telles would play at left-back.

“There’s Yuto Nagatomo too. The answer is I don’t know. That is one of the doubts.

“Last season we had a game against Juventus that looked impossible to lose – and yet we lost it. When Juve take one player off, they introduce another of equal quality.

“Obviously if you leave spaces at the back for the counter against Juventus, the way we did against Samp, you’re going to have problems.

“We gifted Fiorentina four goals and now hope to be a little more stingy. We try to play and create chances, we need to improve when attacking to convert more of our opportunities, as it’s not easy to always win 1-0.

“Will our recent form be enough tomorrow? That depends on how Juve play. If we stay concentrated and allow little, the way we did in the first four rounds, then we can get something.

“Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata are young, but very talented, while Juan Cuadrado brought the change of pace they needed and Paul Pogba is one of the best midfielders in the world. All their players are above the norm.”

Inter haven’t beaten Juventus since 2010, so does the Derby d’Italia feel different this season?

“There’s a lot of focus around this game, we’re near the top of the table, so that gives an extra sensation to it compared to recent seasons. I hope the thing that does change is the result.”
