World Cup goal machine Toto Schillaci dies aged 59 as Italy in mourning for Juventus hero

 

 

 

Italia 90 World Cup golden boot winner Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci' has died.

 

At the World Cup in 1990, Schillaci bagged an impressive six goals, helping Italy to a bronze-medal. During the third-placed playoff against England, it was Schillaci who netted the winner against the Three Lions in a 2-1 win for Italy. ............

 

The former Juventus striker was admitted to hospital last week and has now passed away at just 59. ............

 

Back in 2022, Schillaci was diagnosed with colon cancer for which he underwent two operations. Speaking last week, Schillaci's first wife Barbara, whom he remarried, said of his admission to hospital: "There's no fresh news, either negative or positive, about Toto. ............

 

Juventus posted a photo on X of the Italian, simply writing: "Ciao Toto." And the Italian national team's account also paid tribute to the former Azzurri striker. They wrote on X: "Ciao Toto. Hero of the Notti Magiche." ............

Juventus readmitted to ECA after failed Super League revolt

 

 

Juventus have been readmitted to the European Club Association (ECA) after the Serie A club's failed bid to create a continental Super League, the organisation's chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi said on Thursday. ............

Italy's most successful club, Juve abandoned the ECA in order to push for the so-called European Super League, which was launched in April 2021 but quickly collapsed after fan anger and threats from governing bodies UEFA and FIFA.

"I am pleased to welcome Juventus back to our family. Now, all top division clubs in over 20 countries are ECA members," Al-Khelaifi, who is also president of Paris Saint-Germain, said during the ECA's General Assembly in Athens. ............

A brutal start to the Serie C season has cost a beloved figure at Juventus his job.

 

 

 

Juventus have turned to a familiar face to try and get the Next Gen squad’s 2024-25 season out of the doldrums of what has taken place the first three months of the new campaign.

 

It has, unfortunately, cost a beloved name at the club his job.

 

After weeks of speculation about Paolo Montero’s job security, Juventus announced Tuesday that the 53-year-old former defender has been relieved of his duties as Next Gen manager just 14 games into his tenure after being promoted from the primavera over the summer. The man that is replacing Montero is the man with whom Montero succeed as head coach, with Massimo Brambilla returning to the club after a very brief stint as a manager in Serie C with Foggia that saw him fired in late September following their own poor start to the season.

 

Brambilla, who coached the Next Gen squad from 2022 until this past summer, has signed a two-year contract through 2025 with an option for another season. ............

 

The Next Gen’s seven points are the second-lowest total of any team in Serie C.

 

There’s been a whole lot of factors that have gone into the Next Gen’s struggles — important players being injured, some of the best performers from last season either being promoted to the senior squad or being sold to generate revenue — but Montero’s managerial struggles were arguably the biggest issue of them all. ............

Legendary Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi would love to see Alessandro Del Piero assume the role of FIGC president.

 

The Italian Football Federation will hold an election on February 3rd at the end of Gabriele Gravina’s term. It remains to be seen if the incumbent president will be running for another term, as he could be hampered by his ongoing legal troubles. ............

 

Over the last couple of days, the iconic Juventus captain has suddenly emerged as a potential candidate for the role.

 

Moreover, it has been claimed that the former Italy international could announce his candidacy on Wednesday, while Lazio president Claudio Lotito was the one to put Del Piero’s name forward. The Biancocelesti patron is a longtime foe of Gravina, and leads a large coalition that includes a host of Serie A clubs.

The Super League idea is set to get another facelift. Should Juventus return?

 

Juventus has been one of the more notable advocates of the European Super League project, standing alongside clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona in their initial allegiance to the idea. However, since the project’s collapse in 2021, the Bianconeri have rejoined the European Club Association (ECA), signalling a return to UEFA’s fold and, at least publicly, an abandonment of Super League ambitions. ............

 

Despite the setbacks, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has not relinquished the vision of the Super League. Following a ruling from the European Court of Justice, which limited UEFA’s monopoly over European football, proponents of the Super League have reportedly been revising their plans. Pérez is working on a revamped version of the competition, which will feature a more merit-based structure rather than the previously criticised closed league system. This new approach could entice hesitant clubs, including PSG and Bayern Munich, to join the project.

 

For Juventus, the prospect of rejoining such a venture remains uncertain. While the potential financial benefits could be tempting, the club’s recent return to the ECA suggests they are currently prioritising stability within the UEFA framework. Entering a revived Super League would carry significant risks, particularly given the lingering scepticism about its viability and widespread fan opposition. ............
