Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has revealed that he could bench Paul Pogba for Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final at Parma.

The Frenchman has been in sublime form for the Serie A champions this campaign, scoring eight goals in 15 appearances in all competitions, yet Allegri is ready to rest the dynamic midfielder in order to ensure he's fresh for more important encounters.

"On Wednesday, I'll decide whether Pogba is named in the starting line-up or on the bench," the Bianconeri boss said at a press conference.

"We need to be ready for Wednesday and go out determined to reach the next round of the Coppa Italia. We'll send out the best team to win the game.

"Parma are having a tough moment but they will be determined to get through to the semi-final. We can't underestimate them.

"Parma have put in some good displays recently. Let's not forget that they've also beaten Inter and Fiorentina."

Allegri then went on to reveal that top scorer Carlos Tevez will miss the game against Parma, although midfielders Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal are both available.

"Pirlo has trained, has recovered and will be in the squad," he confirmed.

"I took Vidal off on Sunday because he was on a yellow card, his substitution was a precaution."

Juventus moved a step closer to ending their Coppa Italia drought as substitute Alvaro Morata's 89th-minute goal saw them edge Parma 1-0 in a scrappy quarter-final on Wednesday.

No side has won the competition more times than the Bianconeri, but the reigning Serie A champions have not tasted success since 1995.

They seem destined for a fourth successive Scudetto crown, though, and a league and cup double would be an outstanding way for Massimiliano Allegri to cap his first season in charge.

His side will need to show more in the final third if they are to win the Coppa Italia for a 10th time, but Morata's late strike proved enough to seal their progression into the last four on this occasion.

The Spanish forward - introduced in the 77th minute - latched on to Fernando Llorente's ball before sliding his shot under Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante in smart fashion.

Simone Pepe saw his cross hit the post in the first half and luck looked to be against Juve when Claudio Marchisio had an effort deflected onto the crossbar in the 86th minute.

But Morata's late show ensured Allegri - who made eight changes - did not have to worry about extra time and, potentially, penalties.

Veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo was back in the team for Juve, after recovering from flu, while first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon took a spot on the bench on his 37th birthday.

The clash looked a mismatch on paper, with title-chasing defending champions Juve facing a Parma side who sit bottom of Serie A.

But the class divide was not evident during a poor and uninspiring first half, in which both sides lacked any sort of cutting edge.

Raffaele Palladino cut inside and shot just over in the 23rd minute for Parma, who were dealt a blow when defender Pedro Mendes pulled up injured in pursuit of 18-year-old Frenchman Kingsley Coman - leading to the introduction of Fabiano Santacroce.

The hosts built some pressure as half-time approached, but the best they had to show for it was an Antonio Nocerino effort that was turned behind by Giorgio Chiellini.

Juve nearly caught them cold when Pepe's cross from the left was allowed to bounce and hit the post with Mirante beaten in first-half stoppage time.

Arturo Vidal fired the rebound just over but the match could, seemingly, only improve after the break.

That was not the case, though, as Juventus battled to break down Roberto Donadoni's strugglers.

Chiellini's thumping header went over the crossbar from a Pirlo corner in the 55th minute, while Gabriel Paletta did the same for Parma at the other end.

The match was crying out for a spark and with 19 minutes remaining, Allegri threw Paul Pogba on looking for just that.

Morata was then introduced and he at least forced a save from Mirante after a mazy run, before Marchisio was denied by the crossbar.

As the visitors stormed forward, they did leave themselves open at the back - but that meant little in the end as Morata booked Juve's spot in the semi-finals against either Roma or Fiorentina with a cool finish.

Mirante’s first genuine save was at the 83rd minute on a Morata snapshot, then Fabiano Santacroce deflected Claudio Marchisio’s strike onto the crossbar.

Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Morata ran on to a Fernando Llorente through ball and three Parma defenders hesitated, allowing him to waltz round the goalkeeper. There is the suspicion of offside for Llorente, though it's a matter of centimetres.

Morata: 'Parma made it difficult'

Match-winner Alvaro Morata praised Parma for their performance and admits it was “difficult” for Juventus.

The Coppa Italia quarter-final was only decided at the 89th minute at the Stadio Tardini.

“It was not easy, as Parma are a complicated team, especially on their own turf, but we deserved the win,” Morata told Rai Sport.

“Parma made it very difficult for us and I am sure that if they continue playing like this their season will go better.”

The Spaniard came on in place of Kingsley Coman, so formed a new partnership with Fernando Llorente.

“This is another tactical variation we have in this squad, as we can all play together in different permutations.

“We all give 100 per cent and work every day to ensure we can give our best. It doesn’t matter who plays as long as Juventus win.”

Juventus will face either Roma or Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

“We want to win everything – we are Juve and cannot get a single game or trophy wrong. I think we can win it all.”

Juventus through to Coppa Italia last four

Juventus have edged to a 1-0 victory over Parma to book their spot in the Coppa Italia semi-finals this evening.

Giorgio Chiellini had the first opening for the visitors when his header from Andrea Pirlo's corner was blocked.

The hosts worked a chance of their own soon after, but Raffaele Palladino could only fire his strike over the bar.

Antonio Nocerino came close again for Parma just moments before the break, but his volley at the back post was blocked as the teams went into the break all square.

At the start of the second half, Chiellini had another chance for the visitors, with a header that went just over the bar.

Juventus were largely in control and they threatened again when Kingsley Coman drilled a strike into the side-netting.

The visitors continued to dominate and they finally made the breakthrough with a minute left to play, as substitute Alvaro Morata broke through on goal before slotting a low effort past the keeper to send his team through to the last four.

Allegri: 'Wins can be tight too'

Max Allegri warned Juventus fans “it’s not possible to win every game 3-0” after a last-gasp Coppa Italia victory at Parma.

“I think the team put in a good performance against a Parma side that pressed us and closed all the spaces,” the Coach told Rai Sport following the 1-0 result.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy and the side was mature to not allow Parma anything. Morata did well to make the most of the chance on Llorente’s pass.

“Llorente needs a striker next to him and Morata has those characteristics.”

The Bianconeri were particularly poor in the first half, as their only chance was a misplaced Simone Pepe cross that hit the far post.

It seemed remarkable considering Parma are bottom of the Serie A table and were beaten 7-0 in Turin back in November.

“I wouldn’t say we were sluggish. There were difficulties, partly due to the pitch, partly as Parma were very aggressive and tough tonight. We didn’t run many risks.

“It is not possible to win every match 3-0, some need to be won like this. I think it’s an important result because it shows that those who haven’t played as much are ready and can be called upon at any time.”

Storari: 'Juve underestimated Parma'

Juventus goalkeeper Marco Storari admits they “underestimated Parma” in tonight’s slender Coppa Italia win.

It took until the 89th minute for Alvaro Morata to find a breakthrough, deciding the quarter-final 1-0.

“We have mental strength, even though we found a lot of difficulties tonight and Parma deserve credit for that,” Storari told Rai Sport.

“We started out a bit sluggish, I don’t know if it’s because we underestimated Parma, but got back on track as the game wore on and eventually got this semi-final spot.

“Let’s honour Parma, who despite all their difficulties worked non-stop for 90 minutes and put in a great performance.

“You can see from the line-up picked by the Coach that we want to win the Coppa Italia, as we haven’t won this trophy for a long time. Besides, we are Juventus and therefore want to win every game.

“Every player on the bench can give that something more. This is what we work on every day, as it’s what sets the big clubs apart from the rest.”

Allegri defends Juventus performance
at Parma: We weren't soft

The Old Lady needed a late goal from Alvaro Morata to triumph at the Ennio Tardini
but the Bianconeri boss has dismissed accusations that his side lacked aggression.

Massimiliano Allegri dismissed the suggestion that Juventus displayed a soft underbelly in Wednesday's Copa Italia win at Parma.

The Bianconeri boss rested a number of key players for the quarter-final tie at the Ennio Tardini and it showed, with the Serie A leaders struggling to cope with the home side's physicality and only progressing to the last four thanks to an 89th-minute strike from substitute Alvaro Morata.

It was put to Allegri after the game that his troops had not been up for the fight but he felt that they reacted admirably to a spirited performance from Roberto Donadoni's Serie A strugglers.

"We were not soft," he told reporters. "It was just that Parma were very aggressive. They gave us a hard time but I thought that the guys played a good game.

"It's never easy to win a game like this but we showed great maturity and Morata exploited one of the few opportunities we had."

Indeed, Allegri was pleased with the way in which some of his fringe players stood up to the challenge in Parma.

"Those who have played less gave me the proof that when called into action, they can ensure a certain level of performance," he added. "That makes me very happy.

"Simone Pepe, Kingsley Coman, Angelo Ogbonna and Simone Padoin were all good.

"Fernando Llorente was also good but he needed someone closer to him, so when Morata came on, things went better, as he is good at creating space and finding his team-mates."

Juventus, who are seven points clear at the top of Serie A, will now face either Roma or Fiorentina in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

After wreaking havoc upon the two Verona sides, Juventus found themselves in a Quarter-Final clash with the struggling of the seven sisters, Parma. Despite the massive 40 point gap that separates the league leaders from Parma who sit in dead last, the Gialloblu managed to create a number of problems for the visiting Bianconeri on Captain Gigi Buffon’s 37th birthday.

Juventus started the match extremely sloppy, misplacing passes in dangerous areas and losing control of the midfield, partially due to very high pressure from the home side. It seemed as though the combination of terminating the contract of Antonio Cassano and playing old rivals at the Tardini was enough for Parma to put up a real will to fight.

Max Allegri went into the match with the somewhat unfamiliar 4-3-3, which saw a trident of 18-year-old Kingsley Coman and Simone Pepe supporting the towering Fernando Llorente on the wings. What is seemingly a classic 4-3-3 with two quick flanks and a tall, strong target-man was expectedly formidable on paper. On the pitch, however, Fernando Llorente failed to do much at all and was often times caught either offside or fouling the opposition’s defense. Coman and Pepe, on the other hand, deemed quite exciting and were arguably the only two players of any significance for the majority of the match, making a number of runs around the area and pulling the trigger on their respective crosses towards the 6-yard-box.

The first half deemed drastically dull and consisted mainly of misplaced passes and a number of fouls from the two sides and frustration was noticeably beginning to set-in by the end of the first half in a match that Juventus and its fans would have expected to be a walk in the park noting the significant gulf in class between I Gobbi and I Crociati, especially after having beaten Parma 7-0 earlier in the season.

The first half ended 0-0 without any concrete opportunities from either team aside from a fluke cross from Simone Pepe which managed to hit the post, but miraculously couldn’t find its way into the back of the net. Frustration ensued and Fernando Llorente was simply having a rough day at the office. Luckily, the second half arrived at the perfect time and Allegri was able to regroup and discuss tactics with his struggling troops. Although, it wasn’t until the 71st minute that the Mister had made his first change in the lineup by taking out Arturo Vidal and replacing the Chilean with “Mr. January”, Paul Pogba. It had not been a controlled match from the Juventus midfield despite holding the majority of the possession and Arturo Vidal’s frustration was clear as he headed straight to the locker-room upon being substituted.

More dull moments were to come from the Bianconeri after regrouping at halftime, and it seemed as though the main talking point of the match was why Paletta has not yet shaved his clearly balding head. Luckily for Max and his men, Alvaro Morata was set to come on and replace Kingsley Coman in the 77th minute with the score still level. Morata, who had scored previously against the Gialloblu, had his chance to make the difference by partnering with his fellow countryman, Fernando Llorente for the first time this season. On the pitch Morata looked determined and the young Spaniard had clearly remembered to bring his scoring boots. In the 89th minute, despite playing poorly, Juventus were able to break the drawn-out deadlock that seemed destined for a penalty shootout. Llorente managed to pick out the darting run from Alvaro Morata who trickled past three Parma defenders and tucked it gently past Mirante and into the back of the net with moments to spare.

An ugly win, but a victory nonetheless. Juventus move ahead in the Coppa Italia in their hunt for the “silver star” and a race with Roma to number 10. Juve will now look on to face either Fiorentina or Roma in the Semi-Finals and prepare themselves for this weekend’s match at Udine against Antonio Di Natale’s Bianconeri.

reaction and random observations

For nearly 90 minutes, Juventus looked like the complete opposite of the team that beat up on Parma 7-0 nearly three months ago. Like, not very good at all. It was ugly, and a game that probably made you consider watching other things than try to withstand a couple more minutes of Juve not putting anything on goal.

Yeah, Juventus played terrible. From start to finish. There way other to describe it than that.

Luckily, there was Álvaro Morata.

Oh, thank goodness for Álvaro Morata and all the stupidness that he prevented just before the 90th minute arrived.

A crap performance was erased — at least when it comes to the final score — by Morata's first truly decisive goal in a Juventus jersey. Sure, he's scored others, but this goal, his sixth in all competitions, enabled Juventus to barely get past Parma with a 1-0 win and advance to the semifinals in the Coppa Italia. It was a game-winner when it was desperately needed.

It was just the moment we had been waiting for all game.

Juventus didn't show anything close to the sense of urgency they did when they beat Parma at Juventus Stadium in November. The attack was lacking the usual bite we've become accustomed to — probably because there was no Carlos Tévez. The midfield struggled to truly impose its will on the game — probably because there was no Paul Pogba (for most of the game). It was just a drab, drab game that Juventus truly could have lost if they momentarily slipped up.

But they did.

Because Morata was there to save the day (or night if you want to get technical).

That's something some people have been waiting for. And when Juventus needed it, Morata popped up, with an assist from Fernando Llorente, and beat three defenders to slip a shot past Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

So onto the semis. Not very pretty. Not very efficient. And yet, the job was done — barely.
 

 

Random thoughts and observations

I know it's a moot point since Juventus ended up winning, but how the heck did Claudio Marchisio miss that chance a few minutes before Morata's winner? Claudio, Claudio Claudio...

You can count how many shots Juventus had on goal against Parma with one hand. And it wasn't like Wednesday's game was one of those classic "Juventus creates a ton of chances yet can't capitalize any of them" showings, either.

As the game went on, didn't it seem like this might be a night where Sebastian Giovinco could prove to be a useful option off the bench? Who knows what's truly going on behind the scenes since he signed with Toronto FC, but he could have been a decent option off the bench ... right?

This is not a drill or a typo: Simone Padoin was one of Juventus' best players against Parma. Not that it took much to be one of those players, but Padoin played really well. He can be the butt of jokes all the time, sure. Yet he's also been pretty consistent as a fullback this season and proving to be a useful reserve whenever called upon.

And here's your reminder: You play Simone Padoin from the opening whistle, you win. Simple as it gets.

Fernando Llorente didn't play well again in the grand scheme of things. But if his assist to Morata shows us anything, is that he's still a striker who can hold up play with his back to goal and then distribute the ball to a teammate. His role is different this year and Allegri is probably trying to fit a square peg into a round hole when it comes to his vision of how Llorente should be used, but Llorente's form is what it is.

Kingsley Coman's ability to accelerate is pretty crazy to watch. Seems like he goes from standing still to full-out sprint in just a couple of strides.

I'll admit it, I was relatively overlooking Parma because they've been so terrible all season. Just when you think they can't get any worse, they do. I mean, they're allowing close to 2 1/2 goals a game this season in Serie A, which is just insane to think about. But they didn't make things easy for Juventus at all Wednesday night, so props to them. Sure, Juve didn't play well, but some of it had to do with the way Parma played. It's not all Juve shooting themselves in the foot sometimes.

It's either Roma or Fiorentina in the semifinals. Who ya got?

Alvaro Morata’s late winner saw Juventus progress to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia at the expense of a Parma side who put in a gutsy display at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

It was Serie A’s bottom club hosting top and for long periods their wasn’t much difference between the sides as Parma shrugged off Sunday’s disappointing home defeat to Cesena

It took nine minutes for the first shot on goal from either side with Antonio Mirante easily gathering Andrea Pirlo’s free-kick.

Despite 40 points seperating the two sides it was Parma who were taking the game to Juventus and both Rafaelle Paladino and Danielle Galoppa had shots narrowly over.

It was the visitors who had the best chance of a poor first half, as Simone Pepe’s cross missed everyone and struck the post.

The second half started just as slowly as the first, with the first real chance coming ten minutes in with Giorgio Chiellini heading over the bar and soon after Kingsley Coman showed some great skill in the six yard box but his shot hit the side netting.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri showed his intent by introducing Paul Pogba for Arturo Vidal, who angrily headed straight down the tunnel, and Alvaro Morata for Coman, and it was Morata who soon after forced Mirante into a smart save.

However as the game looked to be heading towards extra time, the Spaniard was not to be denied as he forced his way past several Parma defenders before slotting past Mirante.

After a 1-0 win against Parma and moving on to the next round of the Coppa Italia, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri feels his side played in a difficult game today but found a way to win and move on.

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata was able to find the winner with just two minutes left in the match after coming off the bench late in the second half.

“I feel the team played well against Parma, who gave us a hard time today.” said Allegri to Rai Sport

“These matches are never easy to win. I would say that the team played mature and Morata did well in one of the few chances we had on an assist from [Fernando] Llorente.

“Other than that I would say that we had some difficulties in the game because Parma played very aggressive, but we won the match.

“The important thing is we stayed focused and we found a way to win.”

Juventus struggle past Parma in Coppa Italia

Forty points separate Juventus from Parma in the Serie A table, yet on Wednesday night in the Coppa Italia match, they played on par in what can only be described as the dullest match of the cup thus far.

Once again, Massimiliano Allegri relied upon the 4-3-3 formation in this competition, demonstrating his side's tactical flexibility, but unlike in the match against Hellas Verona, Juventus played a poor game riddled with errors. Disinterested and lethargic, the intensity was lacking while few were able to offer the creativity required to pierce through a stubborn Parma defence.

The Gialloblu are suffering this season both on and off the pitch yet they still played with pride, determination and intellect. Understanding Juve's game, they remained compact and intelligently closed down the spaces to make it difficult for the midfielders to make their timely runs forward. With Fernando Llorente leading the line and consistently tracked by at least two defenders, he needed mobility around him to drag attention away.

Simone Pepe did an excellent job on the right, consistently looking to bypass his defenders and stretching the back-line before dispatching crosses into the box but more was required from Kingsley Coman. Llorente and his teammates needed the Frenchman to provide space, to drag defenders away to leave both his striker and the midfielders with more room to operate. Barring a few bursts forward, this was not the Coman's greatest night in attack.

Previously, it has been argued that Carlos Tevez needs Llorente to play a good game and the reverse is also true. Without the Argentine available to roam, create and exploit the pockets made available to overwhelm Parma with skill and mobility, Juventus looked a little lost for ideas. Their only real opportunity for goal in the first half came from a misplaced Pepe cross.

The Spaniard, like Allegri noted, needs a striker with him, either to help detract attention or to make the most of the tactical sacrifices he makes by pinning defenders back. The introduction of Alvaro Morata offered Juventus more mobility upfront and the duo eventually combined to score the winning goal.

Parma were left broken-hearted and were perhaps unlucky to walk away with another loss. They attacked with fear and defended in an organised fashion but for the Old Lady, this was a game to forget and one that was taken too lightly. It's only normal that after the accumulation of positive results against a number of opponents, the time would come where matches are played below the level expected. Nonetheless, a Juve side without intensity, creativity and precision still managed to win the game to move on to the next round which can only be look upon in a positive light.

One thing that must be noted is that despite how long Pepe has suffered with various injuries, he is still a player to fear and one willing to sacrifice and demonstrate his understanding of the tactics. He was one of the few who made the difference, attempting to create numerical superiority down the right while the rest of his teammates congested the central areas. Parma quickly realised how to halt the opponents' advances and the only one they failed to truly halt was Pepe.

Played with different personnel, the 4-3-3 could be an interesting formation to carry forth, perhaps even one to attempt in Europe. When Allegri signed his contract with Juventus, it was the shape he wished to eventually deploy at the club and spent much of the pre-season working with his attackers to see how they would operate in such a formation. At the time it was thought Allegri would play with Tevez, Morata and Roberto Pereyra and have Sebastian Giovinco and Pepe ready to come on from the bench while Claudio Marchisio would rotate with Andrea Pirlo in the deep lying midfield role.

Unfortunately for the coach, the club were unable to purchase a true wide player in the summer market and Pepe was not at the level required to rely on such a formation. Moreover, with Llorente pinning defenders back, Allegri watched how well Tevez excelled in between the lines and in the pockets, creating and scoring to devastating effect and as such, the 3-5-2 eventually made way for the 4-3-1-2.

Allegri still remains convinced the 4-3-3 can be the ideal shape to ensure balance and strength as in their current state, Juve can appear narrow in matches -- a weakness that will be exploited by European opponents. In order to continue tactical experimentation, it was vital to remain challenging in the Coppa Italia and perhaps more will be learnt to further evolve this side.

Alvaro Morata believes Juventus have what it takes to win the treble this season, after sealing their place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Parma on Wednesday.

The former Real Madrid youngster scored the only goal of the game at the Ennio Tardini to send his side into the last four and and, with Massimiliano Allegri's men seven points clear at the top of Serie A and through to the last 16 of the Champions League, the striker is optimistic about the Old Lady's chances of making history.

"We want to win every competition we’re involved in and I think we’ve got what it takes to do so," Morata told RAI.

"We knew the match versus Parma wouldn’t be an easy game for us.

"But we were able to get the victory and that’s all that mattered."

Morata scored the winner after being set up by Fernando Llorente and he feels the goal proved that the Spanish duo can function alongside one another in attack.

"It’s a tactic we can use," he added. "We can play together and look to do our bit on a daily basis.

"It’s not about who plays. The most important thing is the team winning."

Juventus will meet either Roma or Fiorentina in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.

Vidal to miss Udinese?

Arturo Vidal is a doubt for Juventus’ trip to Udinese, after missing training today with a knee injury.

The Chilean was substituted during last night’s Coppa Italia win over Parma, and the club has confirmed today that the midfielder has suffered bruising to his knee.

“Arturo Vidal missed out on today’s session after suffering a light bruise to his right knee during yesterday’s clash at the Tardini,” read a statement on Juve’s official website.

“The MRI scan he underwent this morning ruled out any serious damage.”

Despite this, it is not thought that Coach Massimiliano Allegri will wish to risk the 27-year-old, who struggled with a knee injury at the end of last season, and during the 2014 World Cup.

The game versus Parma in the Coppa Italia was close. Luckily, the babyfaced assassin Alvaro Morata scored a last minute winner to advance Juventus. More importantly, the team was spared a taxing extra time period. This is good, as Juventus have more important competitions to deal with than the Coppa Italia. For example, Serie A.

Luckily Max Allegri is a good coach and he rotated plenty of the starters out for the Parma game. Unfortunately, Arturo Vidal will probably miss this game due to the knock he suffered on his knee. But, everybody else – barring the long term injuries – is available. That said, don’t expect to see the 4-3-3 that struggled versus Parma.

Gianluigi Buffon will celebrate a belated birthday with the start in goal. Meanwhile, Martin Caceres should start at right back. Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini should start at centerback. And Patrice Evra is of course expected to start at left back.

In midfield, there are two notable absences: the aforementioned Chilean, and Claudio Marchisio, who is suspended for the match. Roberto Pereyra and Simone Padoin are to start in midfield, with Pereyra liking playing in the attacking mid role. Perhaps Pogba could play there. Obviously, neither Andrea Pirlo nor Simone Padoin will. Though that would be mildly humorous.

Finally, the classic duo of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente should start up top. Llorente played the full match versus Parma, but that was his first game since the Napoli match two weeks ago. For what it’s worth, he had an assist in both games. Still, Llorente has not been as strong as he was in his debut season with Juve, so perhaps he can turn that around in the second half of the domestic campaign.

Udinese have been pretty inconsistent in this season: they got off to a brilliant start, then slumped a little. They are in 9th position with 27 points. They have a solid squad, but they need to raise the level of their performances if they want to have a chance of being sucessful in the Europa League race, considering that Inter, Milan and Fiorentina are also involved.

Andrea Stramaccioni has displayed glimpses of acumen, but also stuttered due to some rookie mistakes. In some matches, the team didn’t seem to have the right game plan or to be up to the task. All in all, he’s doing a far better job than last year’s Francesco Guidolin, whose fire and grip on the team was gradually fading, but he hasn’t done enough to bring the club to the next level. He could be the right man in the future, but the jury is still out.

His choices are extremely limited for this match: Panagiotis Kone is suspended, Maurizio Domizzi is out with an ankle sprain, Alex Geijo has a bummed thigh, Emmanuel Badu and Molla Wague are participating to AFCON 2015, Lucas Evangelista and Alexis Zapata are partaking to the South American Youth Football Championship.

He has used 3-5-1-1 recently and all indications point to that: even if he’s been reluctant to do it, he’ll be forced to field Bruno Fernandes (brilliant youngster, but he’s a liability defensively) in the midfield, as Giampiero Pinzi is nursing a calf issue (he should make the squad list, but he’s unlikely to play). The right-back turned intro centre-back Ivan Piris will complete the three-man defense composed by Danilo and Thomas Heurtaux (all three haven’t been immune to blunders). The stout Allan and Guilherme will take care of the defensive tasks in the middle, while Silvan Widmer and Gabriel Silva (or Giovanni Pasquale) will be the wing-backs.

Udinese rely heavily on the flanks, especially on the up-and-coming Widmer, but of course the biggest threats are the two strikers Cyril Thereau, a creative CAM/second striker despite being 1.89 cm tall who has already scored seven goals so far, and Antonio Di Natale, nine goals and still one of the best open field playmakers. Like in the Guidolin era, the counter-attacking game remains their forte.

At home, they have a record of four wins, three draws and three losses. They haven’t been particularly sharp in big matches: they have lost against Fiorentina (3-0), Milan (2-0), Roma (0-1), while they have beaten Lazio early in the season and Inter. In the first match, Juventus took care of business at home (2-0), thanks to early goal by Tevez and with Marchisio closing the deal late, in a game where Stramaccioni’s squad were pushed around and didn’t pose many threats to Buffon’s goal.

That Will Shape Serie a Game

Juventus excelled in January. Indeed, in their four Serie A fixtures in the first month of the year, the reigning Italian champions only dropped points in their draw with Internazionale.

Take their two cup victories into account, and the Bianconeri have outscored opponents by a staggering 16 goals to three in their six matches so far this year.

The latest of these saw a heavily rotated team edge past Parma in Wednesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final.

Boss Massimiliano Allegri has managed the squad superbly, despite numerous injuries. The Juventus coach has done well to give rest to some of the star names at his disposal, and that could prove hugely beneficial down the line.

However, Allegri faces fresh concerns coming into Sunday’s game, with Arturo Vidal set to miss the contest and Claudio Marchisio suspended due to his accumulation of yellow cards.

It was announced on Thursday via the club’s official website that the Chilean was “suffering a sprained right knee.” However, a scan “ruled out any serious damage.” In any case, those two key absences in midfield will give the Juve boss plenty to consider as he prepares to face an Udinese team who sit in eighth place.

Already 22 points behind the Bianconeri, Andrea Stramaccioni has overseen just one win in his side’s last seven games, and they face a difficult run of fixtures in February. Following Juve’s visit to the Stadio Friuli, Udinese take on Napoli away and then Lazio at home in a challenging period for the former Inter coach.

Over the following pages is a look at the issues and decisions that are likely to decide Sunday’s result, looking at what it will take for Juventus to emerge with another victory as they seek a fourth successive league title.


Marshalling Antonio Di Natale

While reducing any side to just one player is difficult, that is becoming increasingly the case for Udinese with Antonio Di Natale. The 37-year-old has netted nine times in 2014-15, adding two assists. The team have struggled to find goals elsewhere, with only eight teams in Serie A scoring fewer times.

After a poor run of form, Juventus have registered three consecutive clean sheets, the defence returning to the dominant force it was earlier in the campaign. They will need to be at their best to contain Di Natale, but doing so is well within their capabilities.


Selection Dilemma in Juventus Midfield

Obviously the loss of Marchisio and Vidal presents a dilemma for Allegri, with Kwadwo Asamoah’s continued absence compounding the issue. The Ghanaian has yet to return to the side following surgery late last year, and Luca Marrone’s loan switch to Cordoba further reduces the options available.

The coach will still be able to call upon Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba, but if he were to continue with his 4-3-2-1 formation, he would need two more players to fill the midfield roles. Roberto Pereyra has proven to be an able deputy, while Simone Padoin and Simone Pepe are also worth consideration.

Allegri may opt to switch back to a back three as a temporary measure, with the solidity of that framework tried and tested over the last three years.


Can Udinese Stop Paul Pogba?

Despite the selection problem facing Allegri and Juventus in midfield, it is still the area of the pitch where the Bianconeri are most likely to cause problems for Udinese.

Paul Pogba will be central to that, clearly hitting a rich vein of form by scoring in each of his last four starts for the club.


Searching for Goals in Attack

While Juve’s recent record has been quite prolific, the continued struggles of Fernando Llorente have become cause for concern in Turin.

The Spanish striker has scored just once since November, and his issues were discussed at length in this column earlier in the week.

Carlos Tevez—who scored one goal and created the other when these sides met in September—continues to shoulder the burden in attack, and Juventus need to get their other front men firing before the Champions League recommences later this month.

With the end of the transfer window approaching, Juventus are working on finding solutions in certain areas as well as investing in bright young starlets. The latest news surrounds the possible arrival of Pablo Osvaldo, who has rejected several proposals in hopes he either ends up at Milan or Juventus.

According to certain media outlets, the forward was spotted in Turin and could well be a new addition to the front line. Meanwhile, former youth product Paolo De Ceglie has found his way back home to Juventus to give the squad even more options in defence. During his time with Parma, De Ceglie demonstrated his flexibility, playing in four different positions, including in the middle in attack. A defensive player by nature, he has shown his ability to contribute offensively and will prove useful to coach Massimiliano Allegri going forward.

Another player reportedly purchased is Andres Tello, the Colombian winger dubbed "the next Cuadrado," according to Italian media. However, for many, the player is nothing like the Fiorentina maestro and isn't even a winger. Tello is instead a central midfielder who is the more defensive mid in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although he is seen as capable on the ball. Apparently, no one in Italy has quite figured out how Tello actually operates, but he is touted to be a useful player and a teenage sensation who will mature into a great if allowed the time.

Yet while Juventus continue to scout the next generation of players, Allegri is weighing up his options with regards to the line-up he will deploy against Udinese on Sunday afternoon. With Arturo Vidal injured and Claudio Marchisio suspended, it's thought that the coach will turn to the 3-5-2 formation to ensure defensive safety and maintain strength against Andrea Stramaccioni's men. Yet one hopes he will continue to persist with the 4-3-3 shape he has experimented with in the Coppa Italia games with Kingsley Coman played upfront and Simone Padoin in midfield.

Udinese have never been an easy opponent for the Bianconeri, with the Old Lady often managing slender wins against a side that boasts defensive organisation. However, this is a team that relies upon the efficiency of the collective, as opposed to the talent of any one star and if they are not in complete understanding, they will suffer.

The beauty of Stramaccioni and the sides he guides is their unpredictability. A man who enjoys scouting the opposition, he excels in uncovering his opponents' flaws and then works on constructing a side capable of exploiting the weaknesses to secure positive results. As such, there are no specific tactics, no set moves or clear identity. Stramaccioni is the king of flexibility and often changes his formations and ideas depending on the opponent and the personnel he has available.

This season we have seen Udinese play five different formations. They have tried a flat back four, a narrow style of play dependent on a playmaker and three-man defence. With each match, that has helped add to their experience. Sadly for the club, the results have proved disappointing, especially in recent weeks with Stramaccioni struggling to find the wins.

The problem with Udinese, is that they often require time to study the opponent on the pitch and can be caught out in the early stages of a match as they come to grips with the game. That was seen against Inter, Roma and Sampdoria, with the latter doing an excellent job to score quickly. However, once they are settled and aware of their opponents' patterns, they begin to play an effective game, piling on the pressure and proving tough to beat until the final moments of the game. Yet it's important to point out that unless they work in unison, as a collective, they cannot be effective. Organisation and synchronised pressing is the key to their success.

Interestingly, this is a side that understands the art of scoring and efficiency in front of goal. They rarely attempt a shot on goal. In fact, statistically, only Parma and Cesena strike less, yet when they do, they usually score, managing 22 goals from open play. Only four teams, including Juve have scored more goals than the Zebrette from open play.

Unfortunately for Stramaccioni, the team will be without some of their best players, which puts them in a difficult situation. Panagiotis Kone is suspended, Maurizio Domizzi is injured and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu is away on African Nations' Cup duty. Nonetheless, this will still be a difficult game to navigate, especially since Juventus will be without their two best midfielders. Another victory and life will be made that much harder for second-place Roma.

Pirlo: ‘Seven points are nothing’

Juventus' Andrea Pirlo warns that ‘seven points are nothing’ over Scudetto rivals Roma and warns against losing focus.

The Bianconeri extended their lead at the top of the Serie A standings to this advantage last weekend after the Giallorossi drew 1-1 against Fiorentina last Sunday, but the World Champion sees no reason to lay back.

“A seven-point lead is nothing, Roma are strong and they will be a tough nut to crack,” said Pirlo in an interview with JTV.

The maestro also spoke of the upcoming game against Udinese this Sunday.

“Udine is a tough place to go. They are emerging from a good result against Empoli that took them away from the danger zone in the standings, so they can play without tension.

“We, on the other hand, have to win, if we are to keep Roma at a distance.

“The game that symbolises 2014, for me, was the Europa League's Fiorentina-Juventus [March 20], in which I scored. That was a beautiful game.”

The playmaker was asked about his particular ability to concentrate.

“I have the personality of someone who doesn't need to spend days before the game looking for concentration.

“I can joke and chat, but it's enough for me to get into the pitch and hear the fans to find my focus.

“You must always have a will to look for new victories, to play and have fun. The mind, for a player, is the main thing.”

The 35-year-old also found the time for a comment on the upcoming Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

“Against Borussia the first match will be fundamental, a good result would allow us to play the return leg with greater strength.”

Pirlo not taking Serie A lead for granted

The champions have opened up a seven-point advantage at the top of the table
but the experienced midfielder insists his side cannot afford to slip up.

Andrea Pirlo has played down the significance of Juventus' seven-point gap to Roma at the top of Serie A and called for focus ahead of Sunday's trip to Udinese.

Juve's bid for a fourth consecutive Scudetto appears well on course, with the Turin club having lost just once in the league this season.

Nearest challengers Roma have hit a dip in form recently and a run of four draws in their past five league matches has seen Rudi Garcia's side fall slightly off the pace.

Veteran midfielder Pirlo expects Roma to fight back, though, and is wary of a tough visit to the Stadio Comunale Friuli.

"A seven-point lead is nothing," he told Juventus' official website. "It's [udinese] a difficult venue to play at.

"They approach the game following a decent win at Empoli which took them away from the congested pack in mid-table, so they’ll be able to play with clear heads.

"We need to win to keep Roma at bay, they'll give us a run for our money right until the end."

Pirlo's distinguished career has seen him win five Serie A titles with Juve and AC Milan, while twice winning the Champions League with the latter.

Even at the age of 35, the former Inter man remains hungry to add to his medal haul.

"That's my character, I'm not the type of person who needs to find my focus in the days leading up to the game," he added.

"I'm able to enjoy a laugh and a joke, but the minute I get on the pitch and hear the crowd, I'm immediately in the zone and focused on the target.

"You need to possess the desire to keep winning, playing and having fun. Having the right mindset is crucial for a footballer."

Massimiliano Allegri's side, who will give a late check to Arturo Vidal after he hurt his knee in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Parma in the Coppa Italia, head to Udinese having not lost in the league in three months.

Furthermore, Juve have won the past six encounters between the two teams and have not suffered defeat at Udinese since April 2010.

If Andrea Stramaccioni's side are to spring a surprise they will need to return to the form that saw them win four of their opening five home league matches this term.

Their last victory at the Stadio Comunale Friuli came in October, but a battling 2-1 win at Empoli last week saw them climb into the top 10.
