Line-ups: Juventus-Roma

Oct 5, 2014

This is the top of the table showdown, as Juventus start Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo against Roma’s Francesco Totti and Gervinho.

Both teams have a 100 per cent record in Serie A after five rounds and already battled for the Scudetto last season, so it looks like another two-horse race in 2015.

Juve need a confidence boost after their midweek 1-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, which saw Max Allegri criticised for an overly-cautious approach.

He hopes to counter that today with Tevez – who has scored six goals in six games in all competition – partnering Fernando Llorente.

Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba start in midfield, while Romulo, Andrea Barzagli and Luca Marrone are unavailable.

Few expected Pirlo to even feature, as he’s in the squad for the first time in six weeks, but he is in the starting XI instead of Arturo Vidal.

Kwadwo Asamoah gets the nod ahead of Patrice Evra, while Martin Caceres starts despite dislocating his shoulder in Madrid.

Roma’s Champions League exploits were considerably more impressive this week, earning a 1-1 at Manchester City and arguably out-playing the Premier League holders.

Totti became the oldest ever goal-scorer in the Champions League, just days after his 38th birthday, and he is again playing here with Gervinho and Juan Manuel Iturbe, who is also back from a lay-off.

There is an injury crisis in the Giallorossi ranks ruling out Daniele De Rossi, Leandro Castan, Davide Astori, Morgan De Sanctis, Kevin Strootman, Marco Borriello and Federico Balzaretti.

Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski therefore starts again, while Seydou Keita completes the midfield trio with Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan.

Holebas is picked rather than Ashley Cole at left-back.

Last season Roma lost home and away to Juve, who amassed an all-time Serie A record 102 points.

The last time the Giallorossi won here was 2-1 in 2009-10.

Juventus: Buffon; Caceres, Bonucci, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Pogba, Pirlo, Marchisio, Asamoah; Tevez, Llorente

Roma: Skorupski; Maicon, Manolas, Yanga-Mbiwa, Holebas; Pjanic, Keita, Nainggolan; Iturbe, Totti, Gervinho

Iturbe: 'Roma can do great things'

Oct 5, 2014

Juan Manuel Iturbe is a surprise starter for Roma against Juventus, but trusts “we can do great things.”

“Is it decisive? I think it’s too early to say yes or no to that question,” Iturbe told Roma TV.

“We want to win, it is going to be a wonderful and very difficult match. We know our fans will be here too and we can do great things.

“How do we trouble Juventus? It’ll be difficult, as they play well and are accustomed to delivering in these big games, but if we focus on our own football then we can have our say.”

Iturbe had been expected to sit on the bench in favour of Alessandro Florenzi, but completes the trident with Francesco Totti and Gervinho.

Llorente: 'Juve have to win'

Oct 5, 2014

Fernando Llorente admires Roma, but warns Juventus “have faith in our football and have to win.”

“It is a very difficult game, as Roma are a great team and for a few years now have been doing very well,” the striker told JTV.

“Last season it was tough to beat them to the title and this year they’ve started out strong, winning every game.

“However, we have faith in our football, we’re playing on home turf and we have to win.”

Sabatini: 'Pirlo and Totti...'

Oct 5, 2014

Roma director Walter Sabatini reveals he “had negotiations” with Andrea Pirlo and Francesco Totti has "football immortality."

They go head-to-head with Juventus today at 18.00 CET and Pirlo makes his first appearance of the season, click here for the line-ups.

“We are surprised to see Pirlo from the start, but whatever their choice in midfield would’ve caused us difficulties,” Sabatini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were in negotiations with Pirlo three years ago, but it didn’t last longer than a few minutes. When we heard his wage demands, we changed idea. At that time we could not face up to such an expense.”

Roma continue to rely on Francesco Totti, who celebrated his 38th birthday last week.

“Totti knows how to set up his teammates and over the summer we worked on the transfer market with that in mind.

“We are witnesses to Totti’s football immortality. He actually seems to have improved his fitness levels with age.

“He’s working towards playing in the new stadium. Red tape is tough in Italy, but Roma will build its own stadium.”

Marotta: 'Why Juve didn't get Iturbe'

Oct 5, 2014

Beppe Marotta is glad to have Andrea Pirlo back and explains why Juan Iturbe went to Roma rather than Juventus.

Pirlo is unexpectedly in the starting XI making his first Serie A appearance of the season after injury.

“We are glad to have him at our disposal,” director general Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“He has such important qualities, on and off the field, while he is an exemplary professional. He’ll be important for the Italy squad too.”

There was a transfer tug-of-war over the summer, as Iturbe seemed to be on the verge of joining Juventus, but switched to Roma within hours of Antonio Conte’s exit.

“He is a strong player and over the summer we tried to contact him, but evidently Roma had more disposable income at the time.

“Over the last three years Roma have closed the gap on Juventus and Rudi Garcia has found consistency. Sabatini also constructed a much stronger squad than last year, so they are a serious candidate for the Scudetto.”

HT: Juventus 2-2 Roma!

Oct 5, 2014

It’s an incredible, fiery battle royal between Juventus and Roma 2-2 at half-time with three penalties.

This was an early Scudetto showdown between two teams with a 100 per cent record so far this season. Juve had Andrea Pirlo surprisingly starting his first game of the season in place of Arturo Vidal, but missed Andrea Barzagli, Luca Marrone and Romulo. The Giallorossi were still without Morgan De Sanctis, Daniele De Rossi, Leandro Castan, Davide Astori, Kevin Strootman, Marco Borriello and Federico Balzaretti.

The Bianconeri were fresh from a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, but Francesco Totti became the oldest ever Champions League scorer this week in a 1-1 draw away to Manchester City. Juventus won 3-0 here last season and the choreography in the stands reminded Roma of their all-time record haul of 102 points from that title-winning term.

Claudio Marchisio tested Lukasz Skorupski from close range after 10 minutes, but the Juve man wanted a penalty for a nudge from behind by Jose Holebas.

Skorupski also smothered a Paul Pogba cross at the feet of Fernando Llorente, while Marchisio misplaced his half-volley on a smart Leonardo Bonucci ball over the top. Roma went on the counter, but Stephan Lichtsteiner intercepted Gervinho’s pass to Douglas Maicon.

There was huge controversy on 27 minutes, as Pirlo’s free kick was charged down by Maicon in the wall. At first the referee awarded another free kick on the edge of the box, but after consultation with his assistants he pointed to the spot. It was a tight decision, as it seemed to be right on the line. Tevez converted with confidence, giving Juventus the lead, but Rudi Garcia was sent off for dissent after making a sarcastic violin gesture towards the Juve players who he accused of whining.

At the other end, Roma had a free kick and Lichtsteiner was penalised for wrestling Totti to the ground, so it was another penalty. The 38-year-old captain took the spot-kick himself and converted past friend Gigi Buffon.

There were six yellow cards and scuffles breaking out, while in the stands Roma players got into arguments with the supporters around them.

Another Pirlo free kick was cleared to the edge of the box, where Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa charged down Tevez’s strike. From that corner, Giorgio Chiellini’s free header whistled just wide.

Roma took the lead for the first time with a great move, as Gervinho’s inspired through ball allowed Iturbe to spring the offside trap and fire past Buffon at the near post.

Gervinho could’ve added a third moments later, as he sprinted away when Caceres pulled up with a thigh strain and finished the move by firing over the bar. It was bad news for Caceres, who was already in doubt after dislocating his shoulder against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Deep into stoppages, Pjanic mistimed his tackle to trip Pogba right on the line and give Juventus another penalty. Tevez stepped up again and kicked it the same way, powerfully at the near bottom corner.

Tevez: 'It's a title showdown'

Oct 5, 2014

Carlos Tevez said “you can tell” Juventus and Roma are fighting for the Scudetto by their fiery first half.

It’s a battle royal in Turin, 2-2 at half-time with three penalties and six yellow cards.

“The referee will need to control the game better in the second half,” Tevez told Sky Sport Italia during the break.

“We are two teams fighting it out for the Scudetto and you can tell that by this match.”

Juventus 3-2 Roma:
Bonucci stunner snatches late victory

The defender struck a volley from the edge of the box with just minutes
remaining, while Alvaro Morata and Konstantinos Manolas were sent off late on.

Oct 5, 2014

Leonardo Bonucci's 86th minute stunner saw Juventus snatch a thrilling victory as they beat Roma 3-2 in a contest that also saw Alvaro Morata and Konstantinos Manolas sent off late on.

A top-of-the-table clash between two teams boasting five league wins from five promised much and there was certainly no shortage of drama at Juventus Stadium on Sunday, with referee Gianluca Rocchi awarding three penalties - two to Juve and one to Roma - in a first half that ended 2-2.

It appeared as though both teams would have to settle for a point apiece, but Bonucci then found the net in magnificent fashion with four minutes of normal time remaining, volleying past Lukasz Skorupski from 20 yards to break Roma hearts.

Juve substitute Morata and Roma defender Manolas were dismissed in the closing stages as Rocchi once again found himself at the centre of the action, but the reigning champions were able to hold on and claim a fifth successive home win against the capital club.

Carlos Tevez twice scored from 12 yards in the first half following contentious decisions from Rocchi, who also sent Roma coach Rudi Garcia to the stands, but the Argentine forward's two penalties sandwiched a Francesco Totti spot-kick and Juan Iturbe's 44th-minute strike for the visitors.

The second half initially provided fewer incidents of note, only to come to life in the closing stages.

Morata headed against the crossbar prior to Bonucci's late winner and was then sent off together with Manolas as tempers flared.

Juve, who named Andrea Pirlo in their XI for the first time this season after his recovery from a hip injury, had early claims for a penalty dismissed when Claudio Marchisio went to ground under a challenge from Manolas.

A penalty did come Juve’s way in the 26th minute, albeit in somewhat controversial circumstances. Rocchi appeared to originally award a free kick when ruling that Maicon had handled Pirlo's set-piece, before changing his mind and pointing to the spot.

The decision prompted fierce protests from Roma, with Garcia sent to the stands, but Tevez kept his nerve after the commotion had ended to send Skorupski the wrong way.

Roma drew level five minutes later, after Rocchi had given another penalty as a result of Stephan Lichtsteiner hauling Totti to ground off the ball.

The Roma captain put his spot-kick in the bottom-right corner, ensuring Juve conceded their first league goal of the campaign.

Life got better for the visitors a minute before half-time when Roma caught Juve cold with a free-flowing move that finished with Gervinho's reverse pass finding Iturbe, whose low drive beat Gianluigi Buffon at his near post.

Martin Caceres then pulled up with a hamstring injury for Juve, but they were level at the break following another debatable call from Rocchi.

The official judged that Miralem Pjanic had tripped Paul Pogba in the area, although there appeared minimal contact and the incident may have taken place outside the box.

Tevez once again showed unerring calm, placing his second penalty of the match into the bottom left-hand corner.

Juve started the second half with more attacking intent, but Pjanic wasted a gilt-edged chance on the hour mark when he dragged wide from just close-range after good work from Gervinho.

Morata then saw a header cannon against the crossbar, but Juventus went on to clinch the points in superb style.

A Juve corner was cleared to the edge of the area and Bonucci let fly with an unstoppable volley that flew into the bottom left-hand corner, though Roma will rightly feel aggrieved that Arturo Vidal - standing in front of Skorupski in an offside position - was not penalised.

Frustrations then boiled over in an ill-tempered finish. Manolas reacted angrily to a stern Morata challenge, leading to a melee and red cards for both players.

Juve win Roma battle royal!

Leonardo Bonucci’s stunning volley saw Juventus beat Roma 3-2 in a Scudetto
battle royal with two red cards, three penalties and controversy.

At first the referee awarded another free kick on the edge of the box, but after consultation with his assistants he pointed to the spot. It was a tight decision, as it seemed to be right on the line, possibly outside it.

Straight after the restart Skorupski was grateful that Pogba’s first touch let him down when clear on goal, then Holebas was decisive to intercept a Lichtsteiner-Tevez give-and-go in the box.

Gervinho got to the by-line and pulled back for Pjanic, whose angled drive from five yards scraped a coat of paint off the base of the far post.

There was a risky Kwadwo Asamoah tackle on Gervinho, but the Ivorian stayed on his feet, and from that corner Radja Nainggolan’s shot was deflected wide.

Alvaro Morata came off the bench and almost scored, as his towering header smacked against the crossbar with Skorupski beaten.

Holebas was crucial, twice in quick succession charging down Tevez shots as he turned in the box, but on that corner Bonucci scored with a sensational volley from the edge of the box. There were three Juve players in offside positions, but not considered to be interfering with play.

The tension was sky high and when Morata and Manolas clashed on the touchline, it sparked a brawl. Morata was sent off for the sliding tackle and Manolas also went for his furious reaction.

Juventus 3-2 Roma: Bianconeri Victorious
In Enthralling Table Top Battle

30ubdcl.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Juventus defeated Roma 3-2 in a breathless contest at the Juventus Arena on Sunday evening in Serie A.

There were penalties galore as Carlos Tevez scored two for the Bianconeri whilst Francesco Totti netted one for the away side who also scored through Juan Manuel Iturbe and Leonardo Bonucci won the game with a wonderful volley.

In the first half the Giallorossi were controlling the possession but it was Juventus who had the most attempts, none of them being clear-cut chances.

In the 25th minute, Juventus were awarded a free-kick which was taken by Andrea Pirlo and blocked by the arm of Maicon in the Roma wall.

At first, the referee Gianluca Rocchi gave Juventus another free-kick but after a few seconds of pressure from the Bianconeri players he changed his mind and awarded a penalty.

Tevez stroked the penalty in the bottom corner to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Minutes later Roma were given a spot kick also, this time Stephan Lichtsteiner appeared to block Totti’s run and the fouled man stepped up and guided the ball into the corner.

The game was getting heated with both teams making unnecessary fouls leading to six yellow cards in the first half.

The Giallorossi took the lead soon after following a weaving run from Gervinho, who played in Iturbe and he slotted the ball down the side of Gianluigi Buffon into the bottom corner.

Then in injury time of the first half, Juventus were awarded another penalty. This one was also controversial with Miralem Pjanic seemingly making little contact with Paul Pogba.

It was Tevez again who stepped up and hit a perfect penalty, tucking it right into the bottom left corner. The two teams went into the break level at 2-2.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Roma had a great chance to take the lead. Good work from Gervinho on the wing had the Ivorian pull the ball back for Pjanic who somehow dragged his shot wide from close range.

In the last quarter of an hour the away side were inches away form taking the lead. From a corner, the loose ball fell to Nainggolan whose shot was diverted a whisker wide by the Juventus defender.

With 82 minutes on the clock, the Old Lady were closest to grabbing a winner. An inch perfect cross found Alvaro Morata who headed onto the crossbar.

The home side did take the lead late on through an absolute wonder strike from Bonucci. A corner was headed away and the defender showed great technique to volley home into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

There was yet more drama as two red cards were shown. Manolas was not happy with Morata’s challenge on him and the two squared up which led to them both being sent off.

The champions held on to continue their 100% start to the Serie A season and claim a very important victory against their rivals.

Leonardo Bonucci scores late winner
for Juventus against Roma

kccrk9.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Leonardo Bonucci struck the winner four minutes from time as Juventus ended Roma's perfect run this season with a 3-2 victory in Turin on Sunday.

The game between the top two at the Juventus Stadium looked to be heading for a 2-2 draw before Bonucci drilled a right-footed volley past Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski.

Juventus substitute Alvaro Morata had minutes earlier hit the crossbar with a powerful header.

Carlos Tevez had put the hosts ahead with a penalty in the 27th minute before Roma captain Francesco Totti equalised five minutes later, also from the spot.

Juan Manuel Iturbe put Roma in front for the first time in the 44th minute but Tevez converted another penalty to level matters on the stroke of half-time.

Both teams ended the game down to 10 men after Morata and Roma defender Kostas Manolas were shown a straight red for clashing on the sideline.

The outcome, Juve's sixth straight win in Serie A, has lifted the reigning champions three points clear of Roma at the top of the standings.

Roma had gone into the contest riding a five-match winning run in the league and inspired by their midweek 1-1 draw at Manchester City in the Champions League.

Juve were looking to bounce back from their 1-0 midweek Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, their first loss of the season.

Veteran playmaker Andrea Pirlo played from the start in support of attacking pair Fernando Llorente and Tevez, the Italy star's first appearance since the World Cup.

The hosts created the first danger in the 11th minute when Claudio Marchisio's 15-yard shot was saved by Skorupski.

The referee then awarded Juve a penalty after his assistant spotted a handball by Roma defender Maicon from Pirlo's free-kick. Tevez struck the spot-kick towards the far post and out of Skorupski's reach.

Juve's joy was shortlived as Roma were given a penalty after Stephan Lichtsteiner was adjudged to have pulled back Totti in the box.

Totti made no mistake and struck the ball past Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon for his first Serie A goal of the season.

The goal inspired the visitors, who went in front when Gervinho sent Iturbe through and the Argentinian beat the offside trap and coolly struck a left-footed shot from 15 yards past Buffon.

Roma conceded another penalty before the interval when Miralem Pjanic tripped Paul Pogba in the area.

Tevez again stepped up to take the spot-kick and found the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 2-2.

Early in the second half, Pogba's strike from 30 yards went straight into the stand as both teams struggled to put a good move together.

On the hour mark, Pjanic should have done better but failed to get a touch on Gervinho's dangerous cross at the far post.

The hosts were unlucky not to go in front in the 81st minute when Morata's powerful header from Lichsteiner's cross hit the crossbar with Skorupski beaten.

Bonucci came to the rescue when Roma cleared a corner straight at the defender and his powerful volley beat Skorupski.

With one minute remaining, Morata and Manolas were sent off, the Greek player reacting violently after being fouled by the Spanish striker.

e5fv4h.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Leonardo Bonucci said today’s 3-2 victory over Roma “proved once more Juventus are the best team in Italy.”

It was the defender’s stunning late volley that decided the match in Turin this evening.

“This goal is worth three very heavy points. We played against a great Roma side, but once again reiterated that we are the best,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

The Giallorossi had gone in front only to be pegged back to 2-2 in first half stoppages.

“We replied to going behind like a great team, as under pressure we needed to find the strength to get back in front.

“We made one mistake and were penalised, but we proved once more that Juve are the best team in Italy.”

There were also some flashpoints, including two red cards and a touchline brawl.

“There was too much tension, we said that to each other on the field, but in games of this importance every tiny thing is amplified. We all should’ve kept more of a lid on it.”

Roma lose Battle of Turin but Scudetto
war with Juventus will go all the way

A magnificent and controversial game of see-saw football was won
by Juventus, but the Giallorossi more than played their part.

y Kris Voakes | International Football Correspondent
“You can’t win with ballet shoes,” warned Rudi Garcia during the week as Roma prepared for Sunday’s Serie A showdown with Juventus.

It ended up being won with boxing gloves amid some of the most spellbinding drama seen anywhere in the football world this year. Goals, skill and controversy littered a marvellous 90 minutes, with Juve eventually edging the contest by the odd goal in five.

Five goals, three penalties, three red cards and a debatable winning goal will have fans, players and staff on both sides of the fence picking over the charred remains of a barnburner, but one thing Roma can take from it is that they are right in the Scudetto mix this time around.

Whereas they had previously rolled over at the first sight of Juventus Stadium in their previous four visits, the Giallorossi went toe-to-toe with the champions, and the result was a wonderful game of football.

There was a clear conditioning of the thrill-a-minute first half by Gianluca Rocchi. The best referees draw a line in the sand which governs the game from an early point, but the Florentine regularly does a good job of allowing the game to quickly descend into madness.

By the break there had been three penalties, six yellow cards, four goals, a sending-off for Roma boss Rudi Garcia, and a beautifully executed goal scored by Juan Iturbe which was at odds with the chaos going on all around.

The first penalty came when Douglas Maicon jumped arm-first into a block from Andrea Pirlo’s free-kick. With the Brazilian being just inside the box at time of contact, Rocchi somehow decreed that another free-kick should follow.

That he eventually gave a penalty was only fair, but the messy way in which the decision was administered made it look a lot like the protestations of Juve players had changed the referee’s mind rather than advice from his colleagues. Regardless, Carlos Tevez slotted away the opener.

A Roma equaliser followed soon after thanks to a second spot-kick.

Stephan Lichtsteiner and Francesco Totti manhandled one another in the type of challenge that would see the defender favoured 99 times out of 100. But to Rocchi it was the Swiss who was more culpable and again he pointed to the spot, from where Totti levelled the score.

Before penalty number three came the outstanding moment of the first half, with Gervinho slipping a beautiful slide-rule pass in behind the home defence for Juan Iturbe to finish calmly. It was a brilliantly worked goal but also a huge statement for a Giallorossi side that had struggled to have any sort of impact on their four previous trips to Juventus Stadium.

But Juve were level by half-time, with Miralem Pjanic lightly clipping Paul Pogba right on the edge of the box in the second minute of injury time. Tevez again sent Lukasz Skorupski the wrong way.

The second half was purely about the football for the most part. Pjanic could have put Roma back in front but screwed an effort wide, while substitute Alvaro Morata – who again replaced an ineffective Fernando Llorente – struck the top of the bar late on.

It was blow-for-blow, pound-for-pound and without a ballet shoe in sight. The inseparable leaders of Serie A remained exactly that until a stunning but controversial winner in the 86th minute.

After Skorupski gave away a needless corner, Leonardo Bonucci met a half-cleared flag-kick with a wonderful first-time volley. Yet as the defender wheeled away in delight with his team-mates, Roma’s players rightly raised a question over Arturo Vidal’s offside position in Skorupski’s eyeline.

"It was the most important goal of my career," Bonucci told Sky Sport at full time.

"We won the three points against a great Roma side. We showed the response of a great team. We showed again that in Italy we are the best team."

The drama wasn’t over, with Alvaro Morata and Kostas Manolas going head-to-head after a collision near the touchline and both seeing red as a result.

Roma couldn’t fight back again, but the Battle of Turin has proved that these two are much closer than they have been for years. The war is still a long way from over, and while Juve still walked away with the three points there is now proof that Roma can go all the way with them.

Thirty-two fascinating weeks remain in what threatens to be a season-long rivalry for the ages.

Maicon: 'It wasn't a penalty'

11lsufl.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Douglas Maicon felt his handling offence should not have been a penalty in Juventus 3-2 Roma.

The Brazilian charged down an Andrea Pirlo free kick, but even video replays do not entirely clarify whether the contact was inside the box.

“The first sensation was that it wasn’t a penalty, as my arm was across my body, so whether it was in or out of the box shouldn’t have mattered,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We had such a good game, it’s a real shame about these incidents. The referee? We all go on to the field hoping to do our best and we all know that doesn’t always happen. It’s a tough job.”

Maicon acknowledged that this victory means Juventus are still the Scudetto favourites.

“They are the same team as last season with some new players and these matches count a great deal, so they are still a step ahead. However, we are working and growing, so hope to continue along this path.”

Player Ratings: Juventus 3-2 Roma

Oct 5, 2014

Juventus defeated Roma by a score of 3-2 at the Juventus Stadium in Serie A action on Sunday evening.

An eventful first half saw Carlos Tevez open up proceedings from the penalty area before Roma overturned things with a penalty from Francesco Totti and Juan Iturbe.

However another penalty from Tevez tied things up before half-time while a stunning Leonardo Bonucci strike with only minutes remaining ensured all three points for the reigning champions.

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon- 6 – Subdued

Was not called upon to pull off any miracles this evening but played in part in what could be a key win for the Bianconeri as they look to repeat as champions.

Martin Caceres- 6 – Valued
Limped off at the end of the first half and his exit was felt as it allowed Gervinho time to find Iturbe for Roma’s second goal. Was replace by Angelo Ogbonna at half-time.

Leonardo Bonucci – 7 – Match Winner
Accurate as always in starting things from the back, Bonucci ensured a crucial victory for his side with a laser from outside the area when things looked like they were heading for a draw.

Giorgio Chiellini- 6 – Barbaric
The weakest of the Juve defensive line but his brute force was needed in what was a rough and tumble match. Suffered the pace of Iturbe but was able to bounce back with a solid second half.

Stephan Lichtsteiner- 5 – Future WWE Champion
Lost his composure early on and gave away a needless penalty that was more suited for a wrestling ring than a football pitch. Was influential as always down the right but needs to keep his emotions in check.

Claudio Marchisio- 6.5 – Omnipresent
The best of the Bianconeri midfield, always dangerous when making his runs from the midfield and probably should have been awarded a penalty when taken down in the first half. Precious in defence as well.

Andrea Pirlo- 5.5 – Exhausted
Surprise starter as he was picked over Arturo Vidal despite being out through injury. Important as always as he lead the team in passes before his exit, but his rust showed as he only connected on 80% of them.

Paul Pogba- 5.5 – Timid
Not as influential as we have seen him be in the past as his first half was decidedly sub-par before winning the penalty that levelled things at 2-2.

Kwadwo Asamoah- 5 – Invisible
A forgettable night for the Ghanaian international who struggled to establish himself in attack and suffered the quick pace of the Roma midfield and attack.

Fernando Llorente- 4.5 – Missing
Another quiet performance from the Spaniard as he never got into the match despite all the talking points. Could be at risk of his losing his starting spot if he doesn’t improve in the near future.

Carlos Tevez – 7 – Unstoppable
Two goals, albeit both on penalties, to continue his blazing start to the season. Juve’s most important player at the moment as his movement in attack caused headaches for the Giallorossi all evening.

Substitutes

Angelo Ogbonna – 5.5 – Uneven

Alternates between good plays and forgettable decisions. Like the rest of the Bianconeri defence, struggled to deal with the Giallorossi speed.

Alvaro Morata – 6 – Lively
Was more lively than his Spanish compatriot in attack. Managed to strike the crossbar before getting sent off for what was a stupid challenge with little time remaining.

Arturo Vidal- N/A

Roma

Lukasz Skorupski- 6 – Firm
Beaten by two penalties and a Bonucci screamer on which he could do nothing to stop. A firm presence in the Roma backline lending credence to the belief that the Giallorossi already have a replacement for Morgan De Sanctis in house.

Maicon – 6 – Needed
Always dangerous in attack as the capital club favoured that side of the pitch when moving forward. Called for a handball that led to the opening goal, though whether it was warranted will likely be debated long into the night.

Kostas Manolas- 6.5 – Warrior
Another solid performance from the Greek who hardly put a foot wrong all evening. Did not hide from the action in what was a thrilling encounter and making Giallorossi fans forget about Mehdi Benatia. Only blemish was his late sending off.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – 6.5 – Growing
Grew with every passing minute as he looked nervous to begin. Benefited from Manolas’ great night and is now a viable option for Garcia this season.

Jose Holebas – 5.5 – Muted
Tried to have his say down the left but suffered due to a few too many miss placed passes and touches.

Miralem Pjanic – 5 – Off night
His miss in the 59th minute cannot go unnoticed as a goal would have likely changed the fate of the match. Not enough of an influence for a player the Giallorossi heavily lean upon.

Seydou Keita – 6.5 – Revelation
Cancelled out Pogba with an authoritative performance that made De Rossi’s absence bearable. Surprisingly good in possession and a great overall showing from the former Barcelona man.

Radja Nainggolan – 6 – Water carrier
A quiet match from the combative Belgian who was quiet in the first half before getting a grip on things and battling in the second half.

Juan Iturbe- 6.5- Speed demon
Probably Roma’s best player on the night as he meant business from the first minute. Caused headaches for the Juve all night and was rightly rewarded with a well taken goal to close the first half.

Francesco Totti – 6.5 – Controlled
A goal in what could be hist last match against Juventus away from home. His lack of movement was evident but when you can pass a ball the way that he can, it doesn’t matter.

Gervinho- 6.5 – Slippery
A constant thorn in the Juventus side, would be unstoppable if his touch were equal to his pace. Great assist to setup Iturbe for Roma’s second goal but could not exert the same type of influence in the second half as he did in the first.

Substitutes

Alessandro Florenzi – 5 – Wanting

Never got his foot into proceeding and failed to liven things up for the Giallorossi in the second half.

Mattia Destro- N/A

Leandro Paredes – N/A

Bonucci: We proved we're better than Roma

The reigning Italian champions moved three points clear of the Giallorossi
after coming from behind to beat Rudi Garcia's men in Turin.

e7coya.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Leonardo Bonucci felt Juventus underlined their Serie A supremacy in Sunday's dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma.

Both sides had gone into the top-of-the-table clash with a 100 per cent winning record after five rounds of action.

For a while it seemed that Juve were going to lose their unbeaten record, with Francesco Totti having cancelled out Carlos Tevez's opener before Juan Manuel Iturbe put the visitors ahead just before the break.

However, Tevez netted his second penalty of the game right on half-time and Bonucci clinched a sensational victory for the Bianconeri - who beat Roma home and away last season - with a stunning volley with just four minutes to go.

"It's certainly the most important goal of my career," the defend told Sky Sport Italia. "These are three big points from a game against a great Roma team.

"We have reiterated that we are the stronger of the two. We responded to a great team. We reacted to falling behind and claimed the victory.

"But we must still improve in certain aspects. There were too many nerves."

Up next for Juventus is a trip to Sassuolo, while Roma will look to bounce back when they host Chievo in two weeks' time.

Allegri: 'Juve are not superior'

30t2o40.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Max Allegri said Juventus-Roma was “a very intense game and the victory was deserved, but it doesn’t mean we’re clearly superior.”

The Bianconeri fought back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 in a thrilling Turin Scudetto showdown.

“It was a very intense game and both teams had some good moves,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Both sides honoured the match. There were some clashes, but those are part of the sport, otherwise you may as well go to the theatre.

“Tonight’s game does not prove we are clearly superior to Roma. We are a great team, but Roma are doing equally well.

“The lads interpreted the two phases of the game very well and deserved the victory, though it was such a balanced encounter that it was open to just about any result.”

There were three penalties – two of them to Juventus – and two red cards, so Allegri was asked if he would be angry in Rudi Garcia’s place?

“I have been in Serie A for seven years and I rarely got angry with a referee in my career. Reducing everything down to Rocchi’s decisions doesn’t explain what happened over the 90 minutes.

“Was Vidal in Skorupski’s line of vision when Bonucci took the volley? Yes, he was,” confessed Allegri.

“We have so far conceded only two goals in six Serie A games. We created many chances tonight and have a very variable attacking approach. The lads are doing well, we control the ball better than at the start of the season and I think that is very important.

“I inherited an exceptional group that wants to do even better. This team has such technical quality and knows how to play football. When you have players who take on such responsibility, it’s much easier for a Coach.”

Player Ratings

Oct 5, 2014

Juventus

1 G. Buffon - Couldn't do much for either goal, but wasn't tested a lot otherwise.

4 M. Cáceres - Tortured by the pace of Gervinho, which inadvertently led to him pulling up with a hamstring injury.

19 L. Bonucci - A solid job defensively, and he came up trumps with a fantastic volley to win the game in the dying minutes.

3 G. Chiellini - Decent recovery challenges on more than on occasion. Booked for a rough barge, though.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - Lofted in a few good crosses, but a clumsy tussle with Totti coughed up a penalty.

8 C. Marchisio - Not the most special game from the midfielder, who slid one half chance wide and didn't influence the game much outside of a few off-the-ball runs.

21 A. Pirlo - His return from injury was rather subdued, as he didn't manage to put his usual stamp on proceedings.

6 P. Pogba - Slowly exerted his influence in midfield, as he drove his side forward, while also providing a defensive presence. He won a soft penalty, though.

22 K. Asamoah - Gervinho also gave him a tough time, as he was left for dead more than once.

10 Carlos Tévez - A busy customer throughout, as he held the ball up well and always tried to make something happen. Buried two confident penalties.

14 Llorente - He was often outmuscled by the defence and didn't link play in his usual manner.

Substitutes

5 A. Ogbonna
- A little shaky and reactive at the back, but nothing too serious.

9 Álvaro Morata - Cracked a header off the woodwork, and was harshly sent off after he got dragged into a confrontation with Manolas.

Roma

28 L. Skorupski - Dived the wrong way on both penalties, and saw Bonucci's shot late.

13 Maicon - Gave up a penalty with a careless handball, his second such concession in a week.

44 K. Manolas - Was having a fine game against Llorente but threw it all away with a petulant reaction to Morata's challenge, and was justly sent off.

2 M. Yanga-Mbiwa - Won a number of tackles at the back and generally did what he had to do.

25 J. Holebas - Lucky to avoid an early penalty call with a late challenge, but he was relatively solid thereafter.

15 M. Pjanić - He was unfairly called for a penalty after Pogba went down easily, but didn't manage to dictate the tempo in his typical fashion.

20 S. Kéita - Challenged, blocked and did whatever he could to prevent Juve from getting space at the top of the box.

4 R. Nainggolan - Broke up play regularly and was important in limiting the likes of Pirlo. Careless on the ball on occasion, though.

7 J. Iturbe - A great run and composed finish scored the second for his side, and he was a threat off the ball.

10 F. Totti - Buried his penalty, which he won, and created some chances in the first half. Fatigued after the break, though.

27 Y. Gervinho - His speed and dribbling was a nightmare to deal with, as he popped up on both flanks to inflict damage. Set up Iturbe's goal wonderfully.

Substitutes

24 A. Florenzi
- Didn't get much of a chance up front.

22 M. Destro - His ball control helped to facilitate possession in the opposition half.

Garcia: I didn't know the penalty
area was so big at Juventus .oddio

The Giallorossi coach was less than impressed that his side were penalised twice
for offences right on the edge of the area during their first Serie A defeat of the season.

2rdkw40.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Roma boss Rudi Garcia sarcastically stated after Sunday's controversial 3-2 loss to Juventus that he did not know that the penalty area in Turin was so big.

The Giallorossi conceded two controversial penalties, with referee Gianluca Rocchi pointing to the spot when an Andrea Pirlo free kick struck Maicon's arm on the edge of the box before ruling that Miralem Pjanic had tripped Paul Pogba on the left-hand side of the area right on half-time.

Carlos Tevez converted on both occasions and Leonardo Bonucci then netted the game's deciding goal with just four minutes remaining.

Garcia, who was sent to the stands following the second penalty, was proud of his players at the full-time whistle - but less impressed with the officials.

"It's a pity that here the penalty area is 17 metres," the Frenchman told Sky Sport Italia. "But I'm happy with my team, who showed great personality.

"There were many incidents today but it was also a little bit our fault that we lost.

"We missed two great chances to score and we were beaten by three set-pieces.

"We could have done better, not only in the result but also our play."

The victory sees Juve move three points clear of Roma at the top of Serie A after six rounds of action.

Buffon: 'No Juve-Roma gap'

hx2jpz.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Gigi Buffon said “there is no longer a gap” between Juventus and Roma despite today’s 3-2 result.

The Bianconeri maintained their 100 per cent record and went three points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

“There is no longer a gap or any big difference between Juve and Roma,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia.

“The two teams created a very entertaining spectacle. Roma have a different self-belief compared to previous years and have become an even stronger squad, so it’s only normal the gap has been completely wiped out.”

Buffon was asked about the referee, as Roma claimed all three Juve goals should’ve been disallowed.

“I have no idea if Rocchi was out of shape, as I don’t watch the referees as they train during the week! What I can say is that you cannot doubt the quality of a referee like Rocchi.”

Marotta: Totti’s words unacceptable

25qc1zs.jpg

Oct 5, 2014

Beppe Marotta has called Francesco Totti’s post-Juventus-Roma assessment ‘unacceptable’, as he looks for a balanced reflection on yesterday.

The Bianconeri won Week 6’s top-of-the-table clash 3-2 at Juventus Stadium on Sunday evening, but post-match focus was on the award of the two penalties in the home side’s favour, and if players in an offside position interfered with play on Leonardo Bonucci’s late winner.

It was a series of events that had Roma captain Totti notably angry in his after-game interview with the media, with comments made that Juve’s director general then took exception to.

“There is great respect for a champion - it is understandable that there is bitterness for the defeat, but what he said is not acceptable,” Marotta commented late last night.

“Juventus in their history have paid for things that are not their fault, and where they have won they have done so legitimately and deservedly so.

“Episodes of doubt exist in every match. We must emphasise that Roma played a great game, just as Juventus did.

“It was not a good match from the technical point of view and the spectacle - it was a game played in the most competitive point of view, with great tension and nervousness on the part of the players on the field. Juventus have shown the willingness to get the win.

“They have won with a technical act of great weight in the final minutes, that certainly should be emphasised.

“Every year Juventus is singled out for situations that are unclear and non-transparent, but in reality I think that within a League the episodes of doubt compensate for themselves.

“In these three years we have won deservedly, with wide numerical advantages to demonstrate the technical and athletic difference to the runners-up.

“When I saw the first penalty assigned in our favour what came to my mind was the autumn of 2010, three seasons ago, exactly on 47 minutes in the first half of Juventus-Roma played at the Olimpico di Torino.

“The free-kick from Totti, Pepe in the wall, with the ball hitting the elbow which was slightly open and rasied, and the penalty awarded in the favour of Roma. Totti scored it and it is 1-1, game over.

“Rizzoli was the referee then and in 2010 awarded that penalty, just as in 2014 Rocchi gave this one.”

Juventus 3 - Roma 2:
Initial reaction and random observations

2je7od2.png

Oct 5, 2014

Just a nice, clam evening at Juventus Stadium. No drama, no reason for anybody to be heated after the game. Simply a nice and relaxing night to watch some football at the nicest stadium in all of Italy.

Or maybe it was just the complete opposite of that.

The first half of Juventus-Roma featured this: One manager getting sent off for sarcastically playing the violin on the sidelines; four goals scored — three of which just so happened to be converted from the penalty spot; six yellow cards getting handed out by ever-card-happy referee Gianluca Rocchi; a handful of calls that should have been made but never were; and a partridge in a pear tree.

So I guess the meeting between the clear-cut top two teams in Serie A that was filled with complete madness from start to finish, it was fitting that in the 86th minute Juventus got the game-winning goal on a volley from ... Leonardo Bonucci of all people.

Yep, in a game that saw cards of both colors come flying out of Rocchi's pocket, fights, controversial penalties galore, and just about everything in between, it was a right-footed volley and a subsequent golazo in the 86th minute from one of Juventus' three central defenders to keep the bianconeri perfect in Serie A this season.

Just like we all thought would happen. I mean, after the way the first half went, there was no way that game was going to end in a 2-2 draw, right? But it took nearly the entire second half to decide what was one of the wildest and most drama-filled Juventus games we've seen in quite a bit of time.

As a great man on Twitter wrote after the final whistle blew: "Impossible to analyse such a game."

I agree.

It wasn't the perfect game, but it kept Juventus perfect in Serie A after six games. Hey, that works for me.

Random thoughts and observations

Before you accuse me of being a blind Juventus homer who only sees things through black and white goggles: The referee was terrible for both teams. That ain't my fault. Why the league didn't have Nicola Rizzoli — who was at Empoli-Palermo, by the way — officiate this match is beyond me. You know it's going to be intense, you know it's going to need somebody to keep control of things, so why not have the best ref in Italy preside over it? Then again, it's Italy, so common logic gets thrown right out the window.

Max Allegri's record in Serie A to start his Juventus managerial career: Six games, six wins. Just like we all thought would happen in the days following his hiring.

I'm worried about Fernando Llorente, guys. It was another game with relative anonymity that is becoming all too familiar for the big Spaniard. We can't chalk it up to him being rusty after a season of inactivity and no game action this time around. Hopefully Llorente is able to clear his head a bit during the international break and get back to resembling the player we saw most of last season.

In turn, what a bad time for Álvaro Morata — no matter if it was justified or not — to get sent off and suspended. The way Llorente is playing right now, Morata should have been in line to start one of the first few games coming out of the international break. That is, before he went and got sent off. But nice header that clanged off the crossbar, though, kid.

Carlitos Tévez goal scoring update: Seven games in all competitions, eight goals scored. That boy good.

With Martín Cáceres' hamstring going all "TWANG!" in the closing stages of the insane first half, Juventus are now down to three healthy center backs. Andrea Barzagli isn't going to be back for at least a month, and who knows how serious Cáceres' injury is (the way it looked wasn't good, though), but Juve can really ill-afford any injuries at the back right now. Maybe, just maybe, this will mean a switch to a four-man defense. I'm not banking on it, though.

We saw it on his goal, but man Juan Iturbe has some serious ability. You think Juventus could use some of his skill and pace in the final third right now? Yeah, I'm pretty sure we all know the answer to that one.

Who saw Bonucci's face in the moments after the game ended? It was almost like a sense of relief that game was over. Or maybe he was still reeling from Claudio Marchisio bashing him on the back of the head over and over again after the fifth and final goal of the night. Either one seems applicable.

And then, we exhale.

Buffon: Unfair of Roma to
criticise referee Rocchi

Both Rudi Garcia and Francesco Totti slammed the official after the Giallorossi's loss
in Turin but the Bianconeri skipper says the visitors should take heart from a fine performance.

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon defended referee Gianluca Rocchi after Sunday's controversial 3-2 win over Serie A rivals Roma .

The official awarded the Bianconeri two penalties during the game in Turin - both of which were converted by Carlos Tevez - while he also failed to notice that Arturo Vidal was standing in an offside position in front of Giallorossi goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski for Leonardo Bonucci's late winner.

Both Rudi Garcia and Francesco Totti blasted Rocchi after the game but Buffon felt that the criticism was unjustified and was more interested in praising Roma for a fine performance.

"You cannot question the ability of a referee of as much experience as Rocchi," the Italy shot-stopper told Sky Sport Italia.

"I believe that there is no longer much to choose between Roma and ourselves. It was a great game, a match of many incredible swings.

"It's clear that they are stronger than they were last season. This is a new season and they are definitely better. We've seen that tonight.

"Roma have shown a different mentality. They have become a very strong team, thanks to their hard work and their experience.

"It's no surprise that they have closed the gap between us."

Juve's victory sees them move three points clear of the previously undefeated Giallorossi at the summit of the Serie A standings.

Juve 3-2 Roma: Bonucci's screamer
seals the win in controversy-filled thriller

Leonardo Bonucci scored the winning goal with a fantastic volley
late in a game which saw three penalties awarded and two red cards.

Juventus and Roma have been in a class of their own over the last year, as they went head-to-head in the race for the Scudetto — one that Juventus brilliantly managed to win for the third season in a row. The big gap in quality between them and the rest of the Serie A was further deepened, with both teams winning their first five games of this season, playing some great football, drawing a clear line in terms of quality between them and other teams in Italy.

But another line was needed to be drawn Sunday night, this time between the two of them, as Juventus and Roma faced each other in Turin, with the first spot at stake. The Old Lady edged Roma in an unbelievable encounter, a proper clash of titans, which saw five goals scored, three penalties awarded and two red cards handed out by referee Gianluca Rocchi, and a late thunderous effort from Leonardo Bonucci to secure the three points.

Both teams were coming from tough away fixtures in UEFA Champions League — Juventus lost 1-0 against Atletico Madrid, while Roma put in a good performance against Manchester City to secure a 1-1 draw. There were only three days of rest for the Bianconeri and four for Giallorossi before Sunday’s game, but that didn’t stop either team to put in some spirited displays in an encounter which won’t be forgotten by fans any time soon.

Max Allegri deserves credit for managing to call up his players after the defeat from midweek. It was certainly seen on the pitch, as Juventus were hungry to prove their worth over Roma, playing on the front foot and despite the fact the away side was thriving with confidence before the game, they eventually succumbed to defeat.

Juventus are going into the international break top of the Serie A with a three-point lead over Roma – the scenario we all expected. And with relative facile fixtures against Sassuolo, Palermo, Genoa and Empoli coming up next, things could hardly look better for Bianconeri. Allegri is slowly but steady getting a grip over the situation.

MATCH SUMMARY

It was a terrific atmosphere on Juventus Stadium, as fans prepared a fantastic choreography in the stands. However, the game had a little bit of a cagey start, with both teams trying to figure each other out and we had to wait until the 22nd minute for the first chance of the game. Bonucci played a great long ball behind the defenders for the onrushing Claudio Marchisio, whose first-time effort went just wide of the far post.

Juventus were pressing high up the pitch, trying to give Roma no chance to counter, and with 25 minutes in, Francesco Totti brought down Andrea Pirlo, outside Roma’s penalty box. Pirlo sent the ball from the resulted free-kick into the wall, where it hit Maicon’s hand, forcing Rocchi to point to the spot, as the Brazilian was inside the box. Carlos Tevez coolly converted the penalty sending Lukasz Skorupski the wrong way and giving Juventus the lead. Roma manager Rudi Garcia made an odd gesture, as he was pretending to play an invisible violin, suggesting the referee was biased towards Juventus. He was shortly sent off by Rocchi for protests.

The home side’s lead didn’t last long, however, as after just five minutes, Stephan Lichtsteiner appeared to be dragging Totti down in the box and Roma were awarded a penalty; Lichtsteiner received a yellow card. Totti levelled the scoring, making no mistake from the spot, only to be booked for wildly celebrating his goal.

Players from both teams lost their cool after the equalizer goal and strong tackles were flying in. It looked like Rocchi couldn’t control the match anymore. With one minute before the break, Gervinho cut inside from the left flank and split Juventus’ backline with a through ball for Juan Iturbe, who scored with a powerful shot at the near post to give Roma the lead.

At the last action of the first half, Rocchi awarded another penalty for the Bianconeri, much to the frustration of the away side, when Miralem Pjanic brought Paul Pogba down right on the line of the penalty area. Tevez stepped up again to convert the penalty, bringing the score line to a level again.

With players from both teams being very on the muscle, the break came right on time and managed to cool down the spirits a bit. Angelo Ogbonna replaced Martin Caceres, as the Uruguayan pulled his hamstring during the first half.

Pjanic missed the first big chance of the second half on the hour mark, when Gervinho dribbled past Ogbonna in the Juventus’ box and cut the ball back for the Bosnian, who shot just wide of the post.

Roma were happy to defend for the majority of the second half and try to hit the Old Lady on counters, who had some problems creating clear scoring chances. Alvaro Morata replaced his out-of-form compatriot Fernando Llorente and had a huge opportunity to give Juventus the lead with 10 minutes left to play. Lichtsteiner played a great cross for the Spaniard who rose above the defenders and headed the ball from 11 yards straight on top of the crossbar.

Five minutes from time, Tevez had two consecutive efforts from inside the box blocked and won a corner for Juventus. From the resulting corner-kick, the ball arrived at Bonucci just outside the penalty area, who scored with a thunderous first-time volley, placed in the bottom corner.

Bonucci’s great goal made Roma players lose their cool again and after just two minutes, Konstantinos Manolas overreacted at Morata’s sliding challenge and the referee sent both of them off, although a red card for Morata was a bit too harsh.

Roma had no energy to push for an equalizer and Gianluca Rocchi blew the final whistle of a fantastic encounter after four minutes of extra-time.

LE PAGELLE

Buffon: 6.5 Roma’s shots on target were both goals and Buffon had nothing to do. Wasn’t really tested throughout the match.

Caceres: 6 Couldn’t really keep up with Gervinho’s pace, but was unlucky to get injured and had to be replaced at the break.

Bonucci: 7.5 Very solid defensively, although caught napping at Iturbe’s goal. Made up for it and brought the three points with a fantastic shot.

Chiellini: 7 Made quite a few important interceptions and challenges, but got booked for a rough challenge.

Lichtsteiner: 6.5 Made his presence felt in attack on a few occasions, but was really clumsy in his duel with Totti which resulted in a penalty.

Marchisio: 6.5 Played for the first time this season out of his regista role and couldn’t really influence the play. Missed a good chance in the first half, but otherwise a quiet evening.

Pirlo: 6.5 Regained his spot in the centre of midfield after recovering from an injury. Although he won the first penalty, Pirlo couldn’t find any trademark through balls to put his team mates in a clear scoring position.

Pogba: 6.5 Was rather quite for the second time this week, as he couldn’t impose his usual powerful presence. Managed to draw a foul from Pjanic for the second penalty.

Asamoah: 6.5 Found himself a few times in good position down the left flank but instead of trying to run at defence, opted for the safe pass.

Tevez: 8 Managed two score a brace again and was always involved in attacking actions, coming deep to pick up the ball. Was the most active Juventus player.

Llorente: 5.5 Another frustrating evening for the Spaniard, who seemed very lacklustre and slow. Couldn’t link up with any of his team mates.

Subs

Ogbonna: 6.5
Replaced Caceres at the break and put in a decent display against Gervinho. Didn’t have that much to do either.

Morata: 6.5 Failed to make his mark before hitting the crossbar with the header. However, was more lively than Llorente. Shouldn’t have been sent off, although his challenge was a bit clumsy.

Vidal: N/A Came in with 10 minutes to play but had no impact on the game.

Coach

Allegri: 7.5
Starting Pirlo, who just recovered from injury, ahead of Vidal raised some eyebrows before the game, but proved to be a good decision eventually. Allegri did a great job on the psychological side of his players, who managed to put the lose against Atletico aside. He replaced Llorente after an hour, but the Spaniard could have come off earlier. Demanded the team to press high up the field with great effect. Good recovery from midweek’s nightmare.
