Eriksson to referee Real-Juve

May 11, 2015

Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson will take charge of Juventus’ Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Old Lady won the first leg 2-1 in Turin and will reach the final by avoiding defeat against a star-studded Madrid side at the Bernabeu.

The appointment of Eriksson bodes well for both sides, as the Swede has officiated two Champions League matches for the respective clubs previously.

For the Bianconeri, Eriksson took charge of a 3-1 away win against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2012-13 and a 3-1 home win against Copenhagen in 2013-14.

The referee has also officiated Madrid’s 3-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg in 2008-09 and a 4-1 victory over Ajax in 2012-13.

However, the Swede suffered heavy criticism from Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini this season after officiating City’s 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at the Etihad Stadium.

Vidal: 'Juventus have a dream'

May 11, 2015

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal has described the Champions League final as ‘a dream’ and says they are ‘not afraid of Real Madrid’.

The Bianconeri travel to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, holding a 2-1 lead.

“We have a dream and we are close to the final,” Vidal said to SportMediaset.

“We are not afraid of Real Madrid, we are a strong team that has shown it can move forward.

“Playing at the Bernabeu is difficult, but we want to progress and to do that we will play with heart.

“They will start strongly so we must be calm and level headed if we are to create chances. The important thing is that Juventus get into the Champions League final.”

The Chilean international also reflected on the Old Lady’s fourth consecutive Scudetto title but their first under Coach Massimiliano Allegri.

“It’s been the most difficult, with a new Coach and new players, but we’ve been in front from the first minute to win the Scudetto,” he said.

“Allegri has changed our way of playing compared to Conte and the team responded well on the pitch this season.

“I had some problems this year, but the important thing is to be on form at this decisive point to achieve our objectives.

“I trained twice a day to be 100%, now people have realised the sacrifice that I made.”

Real Madrid vs. Juventus: semifinal preview

May 11, 2015

Opportunity knocks for Pogba

Paul Pogba has timed his return to fitness with Juventus to perfection, as the France midfielder is about to be provided with the perfect stage to promote his talents. Pogba's rise from his unsuccessful spell as a rising star at Manchester United to becoming one of the most wanted men in European football will reach a crescendo if he leads Juve into the Champions League final with a stand-out performance against Real Madrid on Tuesday. His side are defending a 2-1 advantage following an intriguing first leg in Turin.

The hamstring injury that kept Pogba on the sideline for the first meeting against the reigning European champions last week has healed in time for him to take his place for the second act at the Bernabeu, giving a global audience the opportunity to judge if the intense speculation surrounding his future has been justified.

Persistent headlines suggest Juventus could expect to receive around £70 million if they sell Pogba in the summer, with Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea among the clubs reported to be eyeing up his services. It does, though, seem like a huge fee for a 22-year-old still seeking to prove himself as a world-class talent. However, with his value at such heights, a summer move may well be inevitable for Pogba, especially if he plays a key role in helping Juventus claim Champions League glory.

Such a prospect seemed improbable heading into this season as, with the exception of Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in 2010, Serie A clubs have struggled to make an impression in the latter stages of the Champions League over the last seven years. Juventus are threatening to change all that in the next few weeks. Led by the free-scoring Carlos Tevez, Juve will take a 2-1 first-leg advantage with them to the Bernabeu, with Pogba's role at the heart of their midfield pivotal to their hopes of prevailing.

Time for James Rodriguez to stand up

James Rodriguez was the chosen one for Real Madrid president Florentino Perez as he sought to sign his latest marquee name last summer, yet success has not flowed readily for the Colombian in the Spanish capital. The statistics suggest the player who lit up last summer's World Cup finals in such spectacular fashion has not been the shining star of Real Madrid that his £63 million price tag indicated he should be, with 12 La Liga goals in an injury-hit campaign little more than a reasonable return for the 23-year-old.

Fitting him into a team built around Cristiano Ronaldo's talents was always likely to be a delicate issue for Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, yet Rodriguez has the ability to step forward in the biggest of games and make a difference.

"At Real Madrid, I sit a bit further back," Rodriguez said earlier his season. "I feel a bit more comfortable in the position I play for Colombia because I like to play closer to the goal, but as a footballer, I have to be able to stop and create as well."

If Rodriguez could turn in a match-winning display on an occasion such as this, his belated coronation as a Real Madrid galactico would be confirmed.

Chiellini: 'Juventus must score'

May 11, 2015

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has said that the Bianconeri must score against Real Madrid if they are to reach the Champions League final.

The Old Lady travel to Spain with a 2-1 lead from the first leg, but the Italian international believes the score line isn’t substantial enough to merit a defensive approach.

He also praised the atmosphere in the Juventus camp and described the excitement of the squad ahead of the semi-final second leg.

“We will need to score a goal, because we know that that you can’t go to Madrid and defend such a slender advantage,” Chiellini said to Sky Sport.

“Our spirits are high and we’ve had a relaxing week, having already won the Scudetto. We’ve prepared well for the match and can’t wait for Wednesday evening.”

Between Allegri’s Champions League
Failings And Real Madrid’s Miracles

Despite heading into the game with the advtange, Juve mustn’t
think about the final if they want to book a ticket to Berlin.

May 11, 2015

Juventus are halfway there, another 90 minutes left before they can call themselves Champions League finalists for the first time since the 2002-03 season. However, if they want to actually reach the final, they shouldn’t start thinking about the ‘dream final’ just now.

“It would be a great achievement to reach the final as few would’ve bet on us to do it, dreams are beautiful and hopefully it becomes true.” — Andrea Barzagli

The truth remains is that if Juventus are not calm and collected without being too complacent on the night, the tables could turn, especially against a side like Real Madrid. Not only that, but Massimiliano Allegri himself has a history of such ‘scars’.

In the 2012-13 season, when Allegri was coach of AC Milan, the Rossoneri defeated Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg at the Stadio Meazza. In the return leg, youngster M’baye Niang hit the post early on in a goal that would’ve potentially put the tie to bed. The consequences of that miss were catastrophic, as the Blaugrana ran out 4-0 winners in the end.

Not only that, but Allegri’s AC Milan also found themselves on the brink of suffering an ignominious Round of 16 defeat in 2011-12 — this time due to complacency. Having won the first leg against Arsenal 4-0, the Rossoneri had all but booked a quarter-final berth.

However, the second leg in London saw a spirited Arsenal score thrice in the first half to take the aggregate score to 4-3; however, and fortunately for AC Milan, they were able to hang on.

If anyone believes Real Madrid will be the ones unable to turn the tables, supposedly due to current injuries to key players such as Luka Modric, then it’s ultimately a false assumption.

The truth is that Los Merengues have epitomised comebacks in recent seasons, and prevailed in games when they gave trailed.

In the 2011-12 season, they lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the first leg, but came back into the game and only lost on penalties. In the following season, the team then coached by Jose Mourinho, overturned a tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford by scoring twice in the space of three minutes.

Despite being unable to repeat their heroics in the semi-final, they came really close. After losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg, Los Blancos just missed out on the final after having won 2-0 in the return fixture, meaning a goal would’ve been enough to see them progress.

In the following season Real Madrid were the underdogs when they came up against defending champions Bayern Munich in the last four. Karim Benzema’s goal decided the first leg in Spain, however Los Blancos extended their lead in the second leg by winning 4-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Los Merengues won the Champions League in the end by defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the final, a game in which they were only kept in by a Sergio Ramos header in injury time. If it wasn’t for the goal, Los Colchoneros would’ve become champions.

The truth is that not only are Real Madrid’s players more used to bottle-neck situations such as this, having reached the semi-finals for the last five seasons, but they are known for getting themselves out of them.

In short, Juve must stay focused, they do have the advantage, but 90 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu against a Real Madrid with such a ‘never-say-die’ attitude, can feel like an eternity.

If they want to reach the final, they will have to put Allegri’s scarred Champions League stories to one side.

Carlo Ancelotti: 'Karim Benzema could be ready for Juventus'

May 11, 2015

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Karim Benzema is in contention for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Juventus.

The Frenchman has been on the sidelines for almost one month with a knee problem, but he could return for the European clash at the Bernabeu.

"He has a little [knee] problem from a hit and I think he will be ready for Wednesday," Ancelotti has been quoted as saying by UEFA.com.

Benzema is expected to be named in the squad, but is unlikely to go straight back into the starting XI.

Real Madrid, who are the holders of the Champions League, lost the first leg 2-1 in Turin last week.

Bale and Kroos doubtful?

May 11, 2015

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos are both struggling with knocks ahead of the return leg with Juventus.

The Merengues are already without midfielders Luka Modric and Sami Khedira for the rest of the season and could have further problems.

Calcio News 24 reported that during this morning’s training, Bale remained inside while Kroos only joined in for a small part of the session.

It remains unclear whether today’s stops are only precautionary or not, but Karim Benzema is continuing to struggle with a knee problem despite training regularly.

The Spanish giants are the holders of the competition, but go into this semi-final second leg trailing 2-1 to the Bianconeri.

James: Real Madrid will show
no fear against Juventus

The Colombian says his side know how Wednesday's Champions League opponents
will set up and is confident the Spanish side will reach the final.

May 11, 2015

Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez has warned Juventus that his side will show no fear as they look to overturn a 2-1 deficit in their Champions League tie and reach the final.

Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez scored to give the Italian side a lead in Turin before Cristiano Ronaldo halved the deficit for a vital away goal for his side before Wednesday's semi-final second leg.

With Madrid looking to become the first side to retain the European crown in the Champions League era, James insists they know how Massimiliano Allegri's men will approach the encounter but Los Blancos are not afraid.

"Madrid fear no one," he told El Pais. "We respect many teams throughout the world, but we do not fear. We know what Italian teams are like. They defend well and we have to know how to address them. You must deal with it. If we play to our best, then we will be in the final.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored an incredible 54 goals in 51 games in all competitions this season, but James insists the team must not be overly reliant on him. The Colombian added that he is happy to work hard for the team instead of try and score on his own.

"Ronaldo cannot carry Real Madrid alone," he added.

"I do what the team needs me to do. I participate in all aspects of the game. The reason you work every day with every effort is to try to learn. We are always learning, always.”

Pogba: Juventus Want To Reach
The Champions League Final

May 11, 2015

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has revealed that his team’s main goal is to make it to the Champions League final this season, though he understands their semi-final second leg against Real Madrid will be difficult.

The Old Lady will be heading to Spain to face Los Blancos on Wednesday with hopes of repeating their successful 2-1 victory during the first leg in Turin on May 5 and the 22-year-old confirms that he’s ready to give his all to his team now that he’s physically fit again, having scored in his return match against Cagliari on Saturday.

Pogba spoke to the official Juventus YouTube channel about the decisive away clash with Real Madrid and commented on the Bianconeri’s determination to make it to the final stage of the Champions League.

“I’m happy for the goal I scored against Cagliari, I feel very good and I can say that I was able to play without any problems,” said the French international.

“I think we’re on the right track and I’m ready for Real Madrid. We know it will be difficult in their home stadium, but we want to win and we will do everything possible to earn the victory.

“I’ve always said that we want to go as far as possible in the Champions League and it would be wonderful for us to reach the final.”

Juve can go on to win the Champions League - Emerson

The former midfielder is confident Massimiliano Allegri's men can get the better
of Real Madrid and go on to lift the trophy for the first time in 19 years.

May 11, 2015

Former Real Madrid and Juventus midfielder Emerson is confident that the Italian side can go on to win the Champions League this season.

Juve travel to the Spanish capital on Wednesday looking to maintain their 2-1 lead over Carlo Ancelotti's men in their semi-final tie.

And Emerson believes the Turin side can go even further than progressing to the final, but can lift the trophy in Berlin for the first time in 19 years.

"It will be difficult in Madrid, much more so than at Juventus, but I think in the end Juve will progress," he told Tuttosport. "I liked the way they played a lot. It's a tough team. In critical moments they grow and defended well.

"Who would have thought that they would reach the semi-finals? I would look in their eyes and say to the players: 'Nobody believed in us, now we must show that we can win the Champions League'."

Emerson, though, admits that Cristiano Ronaldo could single-handedly crush the Bianconeri's dreams of European glory, but stressed the importance of Andrea Pirlo to the visiting side.

"With champions like Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar, you must only pray that they are not on their game.

"Andrea is a phenomenon and the Bernabeu stadium would be a good place for one of his punishing free kicks. From the edge of the area Pirlo has crazy accuracy. It's a goal 90 per cent of the time."

Ancelotti's job has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, with Madrid trailing to Juventus and four points behind Barcelona in the league with two games to go. However, Emerson feels his former coach will get through it.

"The Real Madrid players are accustomed to controversy. I can assure you that Ancelotti, with whom I worked at Milan, is phenomenal at bringing serenity in times of a storm. Carletto is charismatic and highly respected by the players: I have seen so many people go beyond their limits just for him."

Del Piero: Juventus Have The Quality To Beat Real Madrid

May 11, 2015

Former Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has spoken with optimism ahead of the Bianconeri’s decisive Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Italian champions go into the match with a slight 2-1 advantage and the former Juventus number 10 has stated that his former side do have the necessary qualities to defeat their Spanish opponents.

“Massimiliano Allegri’s [Juventus coach] tactics this season have shown great solidity,” said Del Piero to Sky Sport Italia.

“They are all together and they have shown a strong mentality when faced with important challenges.”

He continued: “Juventus have demonstrated that they have the strength to beat Real Madrid and to carry on to the final.

“The key will be all about their desire to achieve their dream. Who knows what is going to happen.”

The second leg between the two sides will be played at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 13.

Preview: Real Madrid vs. Juventus

May 11, 2015

Juventus will travel to Real Madrid for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final with a narrow advantage following a pulsating clash in Turin last week.

Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez were both on the scoresheet as Juve won 2-1, but an away goal from Cristiano Ronaldo has left the semi-final delicately poised.

Real Madrid

It has not been a good week for Real Madrid, with defeat in the first leg last week followed by a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia in La Liga on Saturday. Failure to beat Los Che has left Carlo Ancelotti's side four points behind the league leaders Barcelona with just two games remaining. However, when those two fixtures actually take place is still a mystery due to the current strike in Spain.

Nonetheless, the Champions League now seems the only realistic possibility of a trophy this season. The Spanish side are attempting to become the first team in the modern era to successfully defend this competition and they will still be confident of advancing despite losing the first leg in Turin. Such is the pressure in Madrid, Ancelotti might well lose his job if an 11th European Cup does not arrive.

Real Madrid were beaten 4-3 at home by Schalke 04 in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash last month, but they have won 19 of their last 22 European games on home soil. The Spanish outfit have also triumphed in 22 of their 36 two-legged European ties when they lost the first leg away from home, but they have lost each of the last four in that situation.

Real Madrid have been eliminated in their last three European Cup semi-finals against Italian sides. Juventus beat them in 2003, Torino in 1992 and AC Milan in 1989. That said, the Spanish side have won 21 of their 29 home games against Italian opponents and only lost six times.

Los Blancos absolutely breezed through the group stages this season – winning all six of their Group B fixtures to top the section on 18 points. They only stumbled past Schalke and Atletico Madrid, however, which will be a concern for Ancelotti at this stage.

Ending the season without a major trophy is always seen as a disappointment for a club of Real Madrid's size and history, but they will need a strong performance in front of their own supporters. The possibility of a stunning final against Barcelona will surely act as the motivation.

Juventus

Juventus clinched their fourth successive Italian title with four games to spare on May 2. However, success in Europe's premier competition has been hard to find in recent seasons. In fact, the last time that the Old Lady reached this stage of the Champions League was in the 2002-03 season, when they eventually lost on penalties to great rivals AC Milan in the final.

The Italian outfit have made a serious impression in this season's competition, however, and showed their credentials at this level with a strong performance in the first leg. Their home form has always been strong, but they have also not conceded a single goal in any of their last three away games in this competition, which included a 0-0 draw at Monaco in the quarter-finals.

What's more, Juventus have won 33 of their 41 European ties where they won the home first leg – including all four when the score was 2-1. That said, Juve's record in Spain is not too strong – winning on just three of their 21 trips and losing 14 times in the process. This is also their 11th semi-final appearance in the European Cup and they have won seven of those two-legged ties.

For a club of Juventus's history, a total of two European Cups is a little disappointing. In terms of their progression to this stage, they finished second in Group A behind Atletico – collecting 10 points from their six games. They did lose 1-0 away to Atletico, however, and that score in Madrid on Wednesday would take the home side into the final on away goals.

Borussia Dortmund were dispatched 5-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, before the Italian side beat Monaco 1-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. They have only conceded twice in their last seven Champions League games, meanwhile, which is an indication of the task facing Real Madrid.

In 2010, Juventus were beaten 4-1 at Fulham in the last-16 stage of the Europa League. Now, Fulham are struggling in the English Championship, while Juve are on the cusp of a Champions League final. The signs are certainly positive going forward for the Serie A giants.

Team News

Real Madrid had a scare against Valencia – well, another one – when Toni Kroos was forced off in the first period. The German took to social media on Sunday, however, to deny claims that he would be out for the remainder of the season. Kroos also trained on Monday, before Ancelotti revealed that the problem was not muscular. It is expected that Kroos will start against Juve, but Luka Modric is still on the sidelines with a knee problem.

Karim Benzema could also be back following a knee problem, but it is expected that the Frenchman will start on the bench.

Dani Carvajal and Marcelo should both return at full-back, while it is currently unclear where Sergio Ramos will be deployed. The Spaniard returned to centre-back against Valencia, but a midfield role could beckon once again, with Raphael Varane and Pepe starting in defence.

Javier Hernandez could drop out, however, with James Rodriguez moving into a forward position alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

Juventus, meanwhile, were handed a huge boost at the weekend when Paul Pogba, who had been out since March 18 with a thigh problem, made a scoring return against Cagliari. The Frenchman, however, is expected to be named among the substitutes at the Bernabeu.

Morata and Tevez are expected to keep their places in the final third, with Massimiliano Allegri keeping faith with the players that performed in Turin. Stefano Sturaro made his first Champions League start in the first leg and could keep his spot in the team, but Martin Caceres and Kwadwo Asamoah are still on the sidelines.

Real Madrid possible starting lineup:
Casillas; Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo; Ramos, Kroos, Isco; James, Ronaldo, Bale

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Chiellini, Bonucci, Evra; Pirlo, Marchisio, Sturaro, Vidal; Morata, Tevez

Head To Head

In total, these two sides have faced each other on 17 occasions. There has been just the one draw, while both have recorded eight wins. The sole draw came in last season's group stage when Real Madrid made the trip to Juventus, but the Spanish side did win the reverse game 2-1 at home.

Home advantage has proved key in the past meetings, with Real Madrid winning five of their seven games against Juventus in the Spanish capital. These two teams also met in the semi-finals of the 2002-03 Champions League, with Juventus winning 4-3 on aggregate. However, again, they were beaten 2-1 in Madrid – a score that would produce extra time on this occasion.

That said, a double from Alessandro del Pierro did help Juventus win 2-0 at the Bernabeu in 2008.

We say: Real Madrid 2-1 Juventus (Real Madrid on penalties)

Real Madrid will be hurting after the events of the past week, but the Spanish side simply cannot be written off. Their form at home this season has generally been excellent and they will fancy their chances of finding a couple of goals, it just all depends on what happens at the other end.

It would not be a surprise to see this one go all the way to penalties via extra time and with Ancelotti's job seemingly on the line, the hosts should hold their nerve to advance.

Five Things Juventus Must Do To Secure
A Champions League Final Place

May 11, 2015

Juventus take a slender 2-1 advantage into the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals away at Real Madrid, knowing that they must perform to the best of their ability to withstand home pressure.

Goals from Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez twice gave the Bianconeri the lead in the first leg, with a Cristiano Ronaldo strike for Los Blancos teeing up a delicately balanced second fixture.

Both sides prepared for this fixture in less than ideal fashion, by failing to claim victory at home in the league, against Cagliari and Valencia respectively.

Real Madrid are of course the holders of the competition, while Juventus are aiming to reach their first final in 12 years.

Forza Italian Football assess the five key considerations for Massimiliano Allegri’s side to progress further.

1. Apply pressure on Sergio Ramos

Carlo Ancelotti’s experimentation with Sergio Ramos’ position could be over, with the Spaniard moving into a more familiar centre-back role against Valencia after his recent relocation into defensive midfield.

Placing Ramos as the holding midfielder was a tactical calamity from the usually masterful Italian coach, and must avoid taking such a risk again.

Even so, Juventus could still benefit from applying pressure to a player whose confidence could have been dashed by his failure to adapt to a role further upfield.

The energetic Carlos Tevez could perhaps provide a serious challenge for the 29-year-old, by spearheading an unrelenting barrage of unpredictable movement.

Away goals are so often pivotal in Champions League fixtures, and applying pressure on Ramos could bear fruit.

2. Continue to frustrate Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale is a man who desperately needs to hit some end-of-season form, as he’s already passed the point of the fans turning on him.

He will be playing the Champions League hero scenario in his mind, and it is up to Juventus’ esteemed defence to frustrate him with a vice-like grip.

Cristiano Ronaldo will undoubtedly be the focal point of the home side’s attack, but eliminating one of his attacking partners could go a long way towards ensuring a smoother road to success.

Additionally, placing restrictions on Bale could smother one of Ronaldo’s trusted supply lines, leading him to have a greater reliance on his team’s midfield.

3. Shackle the poacher

Javier Hernandez provides another one of Real Madrid’s countless goal threats, and must be limited by the Juventus backline.

Keeping a close eye on him is only part of the process, as any space in behind the defensive line is prone to being invaded by the tricky Mexican.

The complexity of the Real Madrid attack makes it easy for players like Hernandez to find the necessary space, and Juventus will need to work overtime to counteract upon three great attacking threats, plus a midfield willing to drive forward.

While Hernandez is not guaranteed to start the match, he could be thrown on as the game progresses, with his six goals this season coming from 21 appearances, 15 of which were from the bench.

4. Win the midfield battle

Juventus’ midfield is good enough to rival any other central compartment in the world, with a mixture of ideal qualities culminating in a machine which works telepathically.

Whether it be the main quartet of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio, or an alternative lineup with Stefano Sturaro or Roberto Pereyra featuring, the Bianconeri can be confident of their midfield excelling.

Pogba didn’t feature in the first leg in Turin, but showed no signs of rustiness upon his return to action on Saturday, scoring a goal and setting up numerous chances.

Real Madrid’s midfield is starting to show signs of wear, with Toni Kroos a serious doubt for this fixture, while James Rodriguez is also playing at deep, with Luka Modric still out.

Juventus must look to seize the advantage with their midfield presence, or they could face real trouble in achieving their European dream.

5. Soak up the Real Madrid pressure

Realistically, this fixture is going to be very tough for Juventus, and while they can apply all the aforementioned suggestions they will still likely be slight underdogs.

Real Madrid regularly dominate teams at home, controlling enormous swathes of the play and unleashing dozens of shots, and the opposition of Juventus will be no different.

It would be tactically naïve for Juventus to attempt to assume the upper hand in this fixture, and would be better served looking to counter on the home side’s frustration as they search to overturn the deficit.

The delicately close nature of the scoreline has the potential to spring up numerous different playing scenarios, and Juventus must ensure that they continue to be in a favourable position by being conservative.

Chiellini: Real Madrid clash
my most prestigious for Juve

The defender thinks the upcoming Champions League last-four second leg
against the Blancos is more important than anything else in his career with the club.

May 11, 2015

Giorgio Chiellini thinks Wednesday's Champions League semi-final decider at Real Madrid is the most prestigious game of his Juventus career so far.

The Scudetto holders have a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg, thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez, and have been boosted by the return from injury of Paul Pogba ahead of the Santiago Bernabeu clash.

Chiellini is excited to be potentially 90 minutes away from a Champions League final, though he is aware that the European champions are no rookies when it comes to high-pressure matches.

"We can't wait for Wednesday evening to come," the centre-back told Sky Sport. "This is the most prestigious and important game I'll be playing in since I joined the club.

"I've been here for a decade and 12 years have gone past since we last reached a Champions League semi-final.

"The entire stadium will be right behind Madrid and we'll have to try and put them under pressure. They are, however, experienced internationals who certainly won't be intimidated by the odd whistle by their own fans.

"I've played at the Bernabeu twice and we hope it doesn't end like last season, when we lost and I was sent off, but instead like the first game, when we won thanks to Alessandro Del Piero's double."

Juve, who have already claimed the Serie A title and reached the Coppa Italia final, are chasing their first-ever treble this season.

Paul Merson believes Juventus can win the Champions League

May 12, 2015

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has said that Juventus are the only team who can stop Barcelona from winning the Champions League this season.

The Italian team could progress to their first final since 2003 when they travel to Real Madrid on Wednesday night with a 2-1 first-leg lead, and Merson believes that they can win the competition.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think they're the only team left that can stifle Barcelona, and I say that because they've got very good defenders – proper defenders. That's why I think they've got a chance of lifting the trophy, I really do.

"If I'm being honest, I was well impressed with Juventus in the first leg, especially in the first 20 minutes. Real Madrid didn't have a clue what was going on. I couldn't believe how good they were, but they got knocked sideways a bit when it went 1-1."

Barcelona look destined for the final after they beat Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final.

Real Madrid - Juventus Preview: Chiellini
calls for attack at the Bernabeu

Giorgio Chiellini feels Juventus must score at the Santiago Bernabeu
in order to progress to the UEFA Champions League final.

May 12, 2015

Defender Giorgio Chiellini knows Juventus cannot afford to play with an overly defensive approach in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid.

The Serie A champions visit the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Turin.

Ex-Madrid striker Alvaro Morata gave Juve the lead before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised, only for Carlos Tevez to settle the contest with a 57th-minute penalty.

But Real's away goal means a 1-0 win would be enough to see the holders through to the final in Berlin next month.

And Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia: "We will need to score a goal, because we know that that you can't go to Madrid and defend such a slender advantage.

"Our spirits are high and we've had a relaxing week, having already won the Scudetto. We've prepared well for the match and can't wait for Wednesday evening."

Carlo Ancelotti's Real head into the contest on the back of a 2-2 draw with Valencia that all-but ended their hopes of winning the Liga title.

That setback effectively leaves the Champions League as the Club World Cup winners' only remaining chance of further silverware this season.

Despite the pressure surrounding the fixture, playmaker James Rodriguez insisted in an interview with El Pais: "Real Madrid don't fear anyone.

"We respect all the teams in the world, and we know what Italian teams are like - they defend very well and we will have to be very good to break through their defence.

"We have to score goals and if we manage that we will be going to the final in Berlin."

Madrid will again be without midfielder Luka Modric because of a knee problem but Karim Benzema is expected to be fit enough to play after nearly a month out with a similar issue.

Toni Kroos picked up a thigh injury in the draw with Valencia and is a doubt, while Juve are without Kwadwo Asamoah (knee) and Martin Caceres (ankle).

One player that will be available for Juve is France midfielder Paul Pogba, who marked his return from a hamstring injury with a goal in a 1-1 draw with Cagliari at the weekend.

Madrid are one of the teams to have been linked with the in-demand Pogba, and stopping the former Manchester United man is likely to be key for the hosts if they are to keep their hopes of retaining the trophy alive.

OPTA FACTS

47% of the teams that have won 2-1 at home in the first leg of a knockout game in the Champions League (9/19) managed to reach the final.

Juventus have been in this situation twice before and have always managed to qualify for the next round: in quarter final v Olympiakos 1998/99 & in last 16 v Borussia Dortmund this season.

Juventus and Real Madrid have both won eight games in their encounters in the European Cup/Champions League (D1).

Real Madrid have won five of their seven home games against Juventus in the European Cup/Champions League (L2).

None of Real Madrid’s last 11 home CL games against an Italian side has ended in a draw (W7, L4).

The Old Lady has only won twice in their last 20 trips to a Spanish side in European competition (D4, L14).

Real Madrid have been knocked out in their last three European semi-final against an Italian team (v AC Milan in European Cup 1989, v Torino in UEFA Cup 1992 and v Juventus in CL 2003).

Juventus have reached the final in two of their three European semi-final against Spanish teams.

How should Juventus handle its
midfield selection against Real Madrid?

May 12, 2015

For the first time in a good amount of time, Juventus manager Max Allegri has a conundrum when it comes to who to play in the center of the park. It's not a bad one like having to worry about not enough players being fit to fill the required positions. Instead, Allegri has too many midfielders to choose from right now, which means the easy decisions have gone by the wayside.

Paul Pogba needed all of two training sessions with the full squad before making his return to the starting lineup over the weekend. Both Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal were rested against Cagliari on Saturday evening. Claudio Marchisio and Roberto Pereyra started, with the former being subbed off being the 60-minute mark even arrived. And then there's first-leg hero Stefano Sturaro, who got the unpredicted start against Real Madrid last Tuesday night yet certainly answered the call in impressive fashion.

Dare we say ... Juventus has a full-strength midfield going into their biggest game in years?

Oh, yeah, we can say it. At long last we can say it.

And we can also say there's one heck of a decision for Allegri to make entering the second and decisive leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Tarek Khatib @ADP1113
According to #GdS only 1 spot is up for grabs for Juve's lineup vs Real; in midfield, competition between Pogba, Sturaro & Pereyra.

I'll just go ahead and try to step into Allegri's head for a second here to pull out the notion that it's more on how he thinks Pogba feels compared to anything else. Pogba played 62 minutes in his return to the starting lineup in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Cagliari. It was, of course, capped off with his eighth Serie A goal of the season while Pogba also got some much-needed game time after such a long time away from the field.

The thing hinging on Pogba playing from the start against Real Madrid on Wednesday will be Allegri's evaluation of how the Frenchman responds to just a few days rest after making his long-awaited comeback from a thigh injury sustained against Borussia Dortmund back in March. In the time between he has returned to training and opening kickoff in the second leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday, Pogba will have still had just five or six training sessions under his belt.

But, if Pogba is good to go, then let him loose. If Allegri didn't feel Pogba was ready, I highly doubt that he would have played as many minutes as he did over the weekend. If anything, the game against Cagliari was a testing ground for Pogba's match fitness as well as his game as a whole.

He passed it, and now looks to step into the Champions League spotlight once again.

That, in turn, would mean Sturaro and Pereyra would start from the bench. Those are two very good options to have available — especially in the second half and Juve need to defend a late lead or want to ramp up the pressure against Madrid. Just think about a midfield of Sturaro/Pereyra, Vidal, Pogba and Marchisio and the kind of high-energy pressing they would be able to put on an opponent.

It's not the worst thing in the world to have those kinds of options at the manager's disposal. Yes, even if it means having good players start from the bench.

And much like Allegri said before the first leg, a shutout is highly unlikely. And then when you throw in how Real Madrid are going to be pushing bodies forward in search of flipping Juventus 2-1 aggregate scoreline in the favor of the defending European champions. That means having tactical flexibility will be key to allow Allegri to adapt to whatever situation presents itself in the all-important second leg.

Basically, there are plenty of ways for Allegri to go even if it isn't from the opening whistle. That's something he hasn't been able to do much of lately. Just one of the benefits of everybody finally getting healthy and available at the same time.

Real Madrid V Juventus – Preview:
Bianconeri On The Edge Of Glory

May 12, 2015

Juventus travel to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night to take on Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.

The recently-crowned Italian champions, for the fourth successive season, know that any kind of result which sees them avoid defeat will reach their first final of this competition since 2003.

On that occasion, they were beaten by AC Milan despite the penalty shootout efforts of Gianluigi Buffon – a man who will be looking to make up for that night in Manchester by reaching another final and potentially going one better 12 years on.

They face a tough task despite their lead against the reigning champions who are looking to defend the title for the first time in the revamped Champions League era but know they must score or face elimination after defeat in Turin thanks to goals in each half from former player Alvaro Morata and Carlos Tevez.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s away goal does offer Los Blancos hope as does their home record. In the league this season, they have scored at least once in every home game and have managed 58 goals in their 18 matches at that venue to date.

It is a similar story for them in Europe too with 15 goals in their five home matches in this competition to date so the Bianconeri will likely be called upon to defend with the class that they have become accustomed to.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side have already produced disciplined defensive, counter-attacking performances away from home in the knockout rounds already this year in Dortmund and Monaco, a good showing in the Spanish capital last season in the group stages will also give the Old Lady hope and confidence of knowing that they can perform in that environment.

Another thing that will give them a big boost is the return of Paul Pogba. He had a goal-scoring return to form for Juventus at the weekend as they drew 1-1 at home to Cagliari and could be used if needed against Real Madrid. The Frenchman is certainly a welcome option for Allegri to have.

Carlo Ancelotti, a man who will undoubtedly have extra determination to succeed giving his colourful past concerning the Bianconeri, and his side also slipped up on domestic duty at home to Valencia at the weekend – although did fight back from 2-0 down to salvage a draw and it could have been more were it not for an incredible performance between the posts from Diego Alves and a missed penalty from Ronaldo.

Neither coach has any suspensions to worry about although Ancelotti is without midfield duo Luka Modric and Sami Khedira while long term absentee Kwadwo Asamoah is still side-lined for the Turin giants.

Form Guide: Real Madrid (L-W-D-L-W-W) Juventus (W-D-W-W-W-D)

Expected Starting XIs

Real Madrid: Casillas; Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo; Rodriguez, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Hernandez, Ronaldo.

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Evra; Pogba, Pirlo, Marchisio; Vidal, Morata, Tevez.

Madrid's midfield mess - Ramos
experiment highlights Real flaws

The Spain defender looks set to start in an advanced role against Juventus
on Wednesday, with no other reliable alternatives available for coach Carlo Ancelotti.

May 12, 2015

The experiment is not over yet. So said Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti when asked about his decision to play Sergio Ramos in midfield in his side's most important matches over the last few weeks.

Ramos was surprisingly selected in midfield for Madrid against Atletico in the sides' Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, when his reaction to an Arda Turan tackle saw the Turk sent off as the tie swung in Real's favour.

The Spain defender was then picked in midfield for the tough trip to Sevilla and did well as los Blancos dug out a 3-2 win to keep their title hopes alive and become the first visiting side to triumph at the Sanchez Pizjuan for over a year.

So far, so good. But Ramos, who struggled in a midfield role last season in the Clasico clash at Camp Nou, was badly exposed against Juventus in Turin last week as he gave the ball away constantly and looked out of his depth in Real's 2-1 defeat.

"It wasn't just Sergio," Ancelotti said afterwards. "We made more mistakes than usual - also because Juve played at a high tempo." Ramos, however, was particularly poor.

On Friday, Ancelotti revealed he has not abandonded the plan. "The Ramos experiment isn't over because he can play in many positions and he has my confidence," the Italian said.

So having returned to his habitual role in central defence in the 2-2 draw at home to Valencia on Saturday, the 29-year-old is in line to start in midfield again as Madrid face Juventus at the Bernabeu on Wednesday for a place in the final of the Champions League.

With Luka Modric still sidelined, Madrid are without their best midfielder and alarm bells sounded on Saturday as Toni Kroos went off injured against Valencia. The German looks set to be fit for Wednesday after tests revealed only a knock, but he is no defensive specialist.

Asier Illarramendi, signed as a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso in a €30 million deal which rose to €38m due to taxes, has failed to win Ancelotti's trust and seems to have no idea what to do when he has the ball. Easily dispossessed, lacking pace and often poorly positioned, the Basque currently looks like one of the worst signings in Real's recent history.

Lucas Silva also arrived in January for €14m but the Brazilian has shown little so far and is already out of the picture, while Sami Khedira's poor performances earlier this season mean he is unlikely to get another chance either - especially in such an important game.

That just leaves Casemiro, who helped Madrid survive a scare at Borussia Dortmund last season en route to La Decima and was praised for his contribution in that 2-0 defeat as he emerged from the bench to restore relative calm as Real held on for a crucial 3-2 aggregate win. The Brazilian, however, was surprisingly sent to Porto on loan in a season-long deal.

With Xabi Alonso at Bayern, Madrid have no real replacement for the Basque after his summer switch to the Allianz Arena - despite their significant investments on Illarramendi and Lucas Silva over the last couple of years.

So even though he was woeful last week, Ramos still looks like the best option to start in the return against Juventus on Wednesday.

"Ramos played less well against Juve," Ancelotti added on Friday. "But if I need him, I will play him in midfield because he has given me good results." And asked if it would be a "reckless" decision, he said: "Against Atletico it wasn't reckless, nor was it against Sevilla. So if I do it again, it won't be reckless."

They are up against a midfield of Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio, described as the finest in Europe. So it is a risky strategy that could have been avoided with better planning in the transfer market - and one that could yet cost Madrid a place in the final of the Champions League.

Jarni: Real Madrid will overcome Juventus

The former Madrid and Juventus full-back believes Wednesday's
hosts are favourites to overcome a first-leg deficit and reach the final.

May 12, 2015

Former Juventus and Real Madrid defender Robert Jarni reckons the Spanish side paid the price for a ‘weak’ first leg performance, but expects them to recover from last week's defeat and progress to the Champions League final.

Madrid were beaten 2-1 in their semi-final first leg at Juventus Stadium, a result Jarni attributed to a passive display in the absence of fellow Croatian Luka Modric.

However, he feels Los Blancos remain more likely to progress to a second consecutive Champions League final.

"I was very unpleasantly surprised by Real's performance in the first half, even in the second," the 46-year-old told Goal.

"I expected a lot more. They were weak, not aggressive, standing too wide and you could definitely tell how much they missed Luka Modric.

"After Juventus made it 1-0, I thought they could have scored another two or three. Juve had a great opportunity to achieve an even better result – they had Madrid on the ropes but lacked the courage to knock them out.

“So Real Madrid still have a 55 per cent chance of progressing.“

Juventus won the first leg thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata - who joined from Madrid at the start of the season - and Carlos Tevez, with Cristiano Ronaldo on target for the defending champions.

Jarni, who is now manager of Hungarian side Pecs, does not agree with some commentators’ belief that Carlo Ancelotti was at fault for playing defender Sergio Ramos in midfield, but admitted that the Spaniard did not flourish in Turin.

"I was not surprised to see Sergio Ramos in midfield, Ancelotti has tried that option several times in La Liga and Ramos even played in that position while he was at Sevilla. But he was simply very poor and that was key to Real's loss."

The former Hajduk Split, Bari, Torino and Real Betis full-back pointed to another individual – the absent Karim Benzema, who was not fit after returning from injury but is set to spearhead Madrid’s attack on Wednesday after Gareth Bale struggled in the first leg.

"With Benzema back in the team, who can stop Ronaldo, Bale and him? Juve will have to score to progress but I believe the main question is how many will Madrid score in a fabulous Bernabeu atmosphere.

“Yes, everything is in Real Madrid's hands."

Diego Simeone: Experienced Ancelotti
should stick to his guns

The Real Madrid coach has come under fire after the 2-1 defeat to Juventus for fielding
Sergio Ramos in midfield but his Atletico rival believes he will not be affected.

1367872.jpg

May 12, 2015

Carlo Ancelotti has been working with his players for two years and he will have a clear idea of how Real Madrid can turn their tie against Juventus around on Wednesday.

Juventus came out strongly in Turin. Later, Madrid levelled and found their balance. In the second half, Juve then played an excellent 45 minutes and they take an advantage into the second match.

Madrid are just a goal away from reaching the final, but if Juventus score at the Bernabeu, Real will need two. The tie is 50-50 between two teams with great squads and fantastic footballers. And as I always say, it is likely to be decided by small details.

Gareth Bale is coming back from an injury and Karim Benzema is available again. Chicharito has played his part in important moments for Real recently, but it is clear that the presence of Bale and Benzema gives Madrid more options. They are important footballers who are used to playing these type of games.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti has been criticised for playing Sergio Ramos in midfield. But if the coach decides to do that it is because he feels that is his best option in order to compete in that given situation. No coach does anything to deliberately damage his team.

When it worked against Atletico Madrid and against Sevilla, playing Ramos in midfield was seen as a great decision. When it doesn’t work and the team loses, there is criticism and I don’t think that’s fair. As coaches, we live with post-match criticism – but Ancelotti is experienced and he will stick to what he believes can win him the tie.

Juventus are a team that work well especially in defence, but also in the way they attack from midfield. They have great midfield players alongside Andrea Pirlo. And if Paul Pogba is back, his return will strengthen their team in midfield and going forward.

They are quick in attack and any time Madrid lose the ball, Carlos Tevez will be a threat because he moves so dangerously between the lines. He is so unpredictable and difficult to mark. And if Fernando Llorente plays, he holds the ball up well with his back to goal.

For Juventus, hopes rest on how quickly they can move the ball forward after winning it back. If they do that well, they can cause problems for Madrid.

Juventus have already won Serie A, but Madrid had a tough game against Valencia on Saturday. Nevertheless, I always believe that when you are competing in your local league, you also compete better in Europe.

While the team are playing, they are also competing and that can help – just like last season at Atletico when we played our league decider in Barcelona one weekend and then met Real Madrid in the Champions League final the following weekend.

So I don’t think tiredness will be an issue for Madrid on Wednesday. However, if the game finishes 2-1 and goes to extra time and Madrid are forced to play for another 30 minutes, the extra rest for one team over the other can have an effect. Over the 90 minutes, though, I don’t believe it will have any influence.

Benzema recovers for Madrid

May 12, 2015

Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos will reportedly both be fit for Real Madrid when they take on Juventus tomorrow night.

The Bianconeri face the Spanish giants in the Bernabeu tomorrow, looking to hold onto a 2-1 lead from the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

French international striker Benzema did not play in the first leg as he was struggling with an injury, but Tuttosport reports that the striker will be fit to play in the second game.

In addition, midfielder Kroos went off early during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend, but the newspaper reports that he too will make the squad.

That means Los Merengues will be almost at full-strength, with only Luka Modric absent. Benzema will join Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in a front three, while Sergio Ramos will move into defence after his poor showing in midfield in the first leg.

Pirlo: ‘Champions League a dream’

May 12, 2015

Andrea Pirlo says winning the Champions League with Juventus would be ‘a dream’ and discusses Paul Pogba’s future.

The Bianconeri take on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tomorrow holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg, and will advance to the final in Berlin with if they avoid defeat.

“It is such a big game against Real Madrid,” Pirlo told the Daily Mail.

“We know we are now good enough to be winning European Cups again, the quality and maturity is there.

“The reality is that it is half time and both teams will still feel they can rightly win the game. It is going to take a big performance from us, but there is real belief that we can do it.

“To win the Champions League with Juventus would be a dream, and to do it in Berlin where I have won The World Cup would be so special.

“For now that is all I am focused on, I can consider my future in the summer, for now it must be business as usual.”

The British newspaper also asked Pirlo about the possibility of Paul Pogba returning to Manchester United, but the veteran does not believe that’s likely.

“All the interest in Pogba is of no surprise. When you put in great performances you get attention from the top clubs in Europe, it has always been that way.

“He seems very happy at Juventus, I know he is focused on finishing the season with a lot of success. Whatever the future is for him I don't see it being Manchester United.

He didn't feel he was treated well there. I know that was under Sir Alex Ferguson and now there is a new Coach, but I do not seeing him returning to a club where he was not treated well.”

Zoff: Juventus Can Reach The Champions League Final

May 12, 2015

Former Juventus goalkeeper Dino Zoff believes that his old club can progress from the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Real Madrid and make the final.

The 73-year-old expects current Juve stopper Gianluigi Buffon to put in a good performance at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where Zoff won the 1982 World Cup.

“At the Bernabeu, Juventus will have the players needed to make the final; even if Real are extremely strong,” said Zoff to La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

“It will be difficult to mark Cristiano Ronaldo and the others, but Juventus have the quality to contain them before launching counterattacks of their own that will inflict damage upon Madrid.

“Gigi [buffon] doesn’t need any advice, he will surely be a key player.”

Zoff also spoke about his memories of the stadium in Madrid where he became a World Champion and that he also once visited as the coach of Lazio for a Champions League match against Real Madrid.

“I don’t really remember the stadium as a place,” said Zoff.

“When you take to the pitch to contest a final you’re so concentrated that you don’t notice the things on the sidelines.

“My Lazio team also played well there, it was a shame to lose in the second group stage of the Champions League.”

Real Madrid-Juventus Betting: Stubborn Italians
to make life difficult for Ancelotti's men at the Bernabeu

With a slender lead to protect and a backline that seems to prefer life on the road
to matches in front of their own fans, Al Hain-Cole expects the Bianconeri to defend staunchly.

May 12, 2015

Real Madrid will need to overturn a 2-1 aggregate deficit when they welcome Juventus to the Santiago Bernabeu for Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg.

Having won 12 of their last 13 home games in this competition, the holders are favourites with bet365 to remain on course to retaining their title by coming out on top here.

The Bianconeri have won twice in seven previous visits to this ground and are available at to chalk up a third in dramatic circumstances this time out.

A draw would also be enough to see the visitors through to their first European final since 2003 and you can get odds of on them grinding out a stalemate in the Spanish capital.

While Carlo Ancelotti was perhaps taken slightly aback by his former side’s attacking intent in the away leg, he would probably be safe in anticipating a slightly less adventurous approach from the opposition in this game.

With a slender lead to protect, the Italian champions are unlikely to come out of their shell too much here, instead looking to replicate Atletico Madrid’s albeit ultimately fruitless game plan against Los Blancos in the last round.

Having seen his side defend more effectively on the road than in front of their own fans this season, Massimiliano Allegri will certainly have confidence in their ability to frustrate a home team that have scored just twice in their last three Champions League fixtures.

Only two of the 12 goals that Juventus have conceded in 24 competitive away fixtures this season have come in Europe, the last of which was four games ago in the group-stage clash at Olympiakos.

With this in mind, seems like a generous price on under 2.5 goals being scored in a tight match here, just as they have been in five of Real’s last eight and eight of Juve’s last 12 in this competition.
