Zidane’s Juventus would be one of
the greatest but for Mijatovic’s Madrid

The brilliant Bianconeri side coached by Marcello Lippi reached three UCL finals
in a row but under-achieved – partly thanks to 1998 final hero Predrag Mijatovic.

May 5, 2015

Since Franz Beckenbauer’s Bayern Munich clinched a third European Cup title in a row 39 years ago by beating Saint-Etienne at Hampden Park, only two teams have reached three Champions League finals on the spin.

One was Fabio Capello’s magnificent AC Milan side, whose place in footballing folklore is safe, despite losing two finals, courtesy of their devastating 4-0 destruction of Johann Cruyff’s Barcelona Dream Team in Athens in 1994.

The other team should also be remembered as one of the European Cup’s best ever sides, but their legacy was never secured due to under-achievement.

Marcello Lippi’s Juventus outfit of the mid-to-late-1990s boasted a devastating blend of power, team-work, technique and individual brilliance.

“Juventus were the model for us, the teams of Lippi. They were the best, they gave us some beatings," former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson once remarked.

The likes of Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro Del Piero, Didier Deschamps, Edgar Davids, Ciro Ferrara and Pippo Inzaghi all played under Lippi at various points during his first spell in Turin. But despite reaching three consecutive Champions League finals – and narrowly missing out on a fourth in 1999 – Juve only won the trophy once, thanks to a penalty shootout victory over Ajax in 1996.

In 1997, Juventus were red-hot favourites to beat Borussia Dortmund having already romped to the Serie A title, thrashed Ajax 6-2 on aggregate in the semis and obliterated Paris Saint-Germain 9-2 in the Uefa Super Cup. However, despite dominating large spells of the showpiece, they were stunned 3-1 by BVB.

A year later, Juventus were again overwhelming favourites with the bookmakers as they faced crisis-hit Real Madrid in the final in Amsterdam. The Bianconeri had just secured another Scudetto, while Madrid coach Jupp Heynckes was about to be sacked after finishing only fourth in La Liga – winning a paltry 17 league games.

However, once again, Juventus were upset on the biggest stage as Madrid edged a close encounter 1-0. Predrag Mijatovic was the hero with the only goal of the game on 66 minutes, pouncing on a loose ball and rounding goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi before turning home.

The former Yugoslavia international explains how Real were able to surprise the Old Lady.

"I remember ahead of that 1998 final, Zidane was our focus,” the ex-Partizan Belgrade, Valencia and Fiorentina striker told Goal.

“We spent most of our time and energy looking for a way to stop him. Juve had been great that season in Serie A and Zizou was their key man. Meanwhile, we had been a disaster in the Primera Division. If we hadn't returned home from Amsterdam with the trophy, I don't know how we could have faced our fans!

“And for that to happen, we had to neutralise Zidane. Christian Karembeu was given the responsibility to mark him. He was his teammate from the France national team and knew exactly how to deal with Zizou.

“Zidane started well and even had some dangerous shots, but as the time passed he became more and more insignificant.”

Mijatovic’s goal secured Madrid’s first European Cup win in 32 years, but even to this day he still thanks Karembeu for making this possible.

“Yes I scored the goal that won a title that the people in Madrid had waited decades for and it brought me the kind of happiness every player dreams of, but Karembeu had a big, big job in that match," he acknowledges.

Mijatovic spent three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring 29 goals in 90 games and his exploits in winning La Liga in 1997 saw him finish second in the Ballon d’Or race that year – behind Ronaldo but above third-placed Zidane.

"It was a great satisfaction to finish above such a player,” he gushed. “But I was not the best and that is the ambition of every player.”

Mijatovic has backed his former troops to repeat the 1998 success over Juventus when the two come head-to-head in the Champions League semi-final, which begins with Tuesday's first leg in Turin.

"Real are the slight favourites because they have a great number of high quality players and one hell of a coach in Carlo Ancelotti who always knows what he is doing,” he stated. “That was shown with him moving Sergio Ramos into midfield. I am sure he has a plan to eliminate Juve.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is ready after his hat-trick against Sevilla, and Madrid have the experience - they are the holders and in their fifth consecutive semi-final. But everything is possible at this stage and one mistake can be fatal.

"I respect Juventus a lot and many people are underestimating them. They have great individuals such as Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez, Paul Pogba and Gianluigi Buffon, but more importantly they have a strong team spirit and competitive character.

“They know how to play to get a result and there is a positive atmosphere in the team. They are already Italian champions and have just qualified for their first Champions League semi-final in 12 years. Juve have less pressure than Real.”

When the teams met 17 years ago in Amsterdam, the opposite was true and it was Madrid who were expected to lose. But Mijatovic denied Juventus the chance to be remembered as one of Europe's greatest-ever sides.

This time around, it is the Bianconeri who will be hoping to turn the tables as holders Madrid attempt to extend their legacy on the continent and become the first side in 25 years to retain the European Cup.

Casillas Is Better Than Buffon
States Former Juventus And Italy Legend

May 5, 2015

Former Juventus goalkeeper Dino Zoff has heaped praise on Real Madrid shot stopper Iker Casillas by claiming he is better than current Bianconeri number one Gianluigi Buffon.

The Italian goalkeeping legend, who played for Juve from 1972 until 1983, made the claim on the eve of the semi-final clash set to take place at the Juventus Stadium between the two sides.

“Between the two I prefer the Real Madrid goalkeeper,” he stated while speaking to Radio 4G.

Zoff, who made over 330 appearances for the Bianconeri, also shared his thoughts on who he believes to be the top goalkeeper in the world.

“I think that at this time the best in the world is [Manuel] Neuer, but if I have to choose between Casillas and Buffon, I prefer the Spaniard.”

Zoff is currently a consultant for the Greek national football team.

Lippi: ‘Juventus, defend well’

May 5, 2015

Marcello Lippi believes Juventus will have to ‘defend very well’, but can beat Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The former Bianconeri boss was the mastermind behind their last appearance in a semi-final of this competition, achieving a 4-3 aggregate victory over the same opponents, and he has some advice for this Juve side.

“I expect a game with a lot of conviction and confidence,” Lippi told TuttoJuve.

“I expect realism because of the awareness of the strength of their opponents, but also great belief in their chances.

“Juventus will have to defend very well against these great champions, and when I say that I mean being compact as a team, not just in defence.

“Everyone will know that they have to defend, with the knowledge that they have the weapons to create big chances, because all the big teams give their opponents something.

“It will take great solidity in defending, and great skill in taking advantage of the opportunities which there will surely be.

“That’s the kind of game I expect.

“I think they can do it, but clearly there should be no mistakes. They must give 150 per cent physically and psychologically.”

The World Cup winning Coach also reflected on that 2003 meeting, in which his side overcame a 2-1 first leg deficit by winning 3-1 in Turin.

“I remember in particular, that in the two days leading up to the game, we had prepared a few things to limit Zidane, and deny him space.

“However, while training and preparing those things I realised it would distort us a little, so on the morning of the game I told the players to forget what I’d been saying for the last few days!

“I told them to play the game the way we always did, trying to make the most of our attributes without thinking about the opponents.”

Madrid have a 55 per cent chance
of beating Juventus - Robert Jarni

The former Croatia international believes it will be a tight affair
in Turin but feels the Spanish side are slight favourites for the tie overall.

May 5, 2015

Former Juventus and Real Madrid left-back Robert Jarni believes that the Spanish giants have a 55 per cent chance of winning their Champions League semi-final tie.

The two giants go head-to-head in the first leg of the competition's last four in Turin on Tuesday as Madrid look to retain their Champions League crown, while Juve try to reach the final for the first time since 2002-03.

Jarni says the game will be tough for both sides because of the clash of styles, but makes the Spanish side the slight favourites.

"I don't know who to cheer for, it is hard to decide," he told Goal. "I've played for both clubs, both are big clubs with fantastic history.

"I expect a very tough game and even if Juventus fail to score in the first leg, they have a chance to progress, they seem to play better away from home.

"But I give the advantage to Madrid because of their experience and coach Carlo Ancelotti, who knows how to win the competition.

"It is a clash between one of the best attacks in Europe and one of the best defences, I would rate their chances at 55 per cent to 45 in Madrid's favour. Especially if they don't concede a goal in Turin.

"It is hard for me to say how Juve will play. In Turin everything has changed since I was there so I don't really know anybody anymore."

The 46-year-old former Croatia international, who played for Juventus in 1994-95 and Madrid in 1998-99, believes the absence of Luka Modric will hinder the visitors on Tuesday.

"Real will miss Modric very much, he is their brain, gives rhythm and 'colour' to their play, they will especially miss Luka offensively."

Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon are icons of their current sides and former Juve defender Igor Tudor - who played in the 2003 semi-final triumph over Madrid - believes the Italian is the best No.1 that has ever played the game.

"Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas are both phenomenal keepers but for me Buffon is the best in football history and I believe he will give Juve the advantage in this tie," Tudor predicted.

"Madrid are clear favourites, but just like each of the other teams wanted to meet Juventus, I would say Juve got the best possible draw as well.

"Bayern Munich and Barcelona are currently better teams. Real have great players but they have a lot of injured players. And even for Real it is not the same if Modric and Karim Benzema don't play.

"Between Bayern and Barcelona, I give a small advantage to Bayern, only because they have the world's best coach. Guardiola is one of best coaches ever, he does some things no one else does."

Barzagli To Miss Tie With Real Madrid

May 5, 2015

Juventus stopper Andrea Barzagli is expected to be left on the bench this evening as his side face Spanish giants Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi final.

The big centre back, who has missed much of the current campaign through injury, played in the weekend win over Sampdoria, as the Turin outfit secured their fourth straight league title.

La giornalaccio rosa Dello Sport is reporting today that coach Massimiliano Allegri will switch to a back four against the Spaniards and will deploy Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci at the heart of his rear guard, leaving the 33-year-old out of the starting line-up.

The pink daily is also suggesting that Alvaro Morata will be preferred ahead of compatriot Fernando Llorente in attack, alongside Carlos Tevez.

Juventus became champions of Italy on Saturday after an Arturo Vidal header gave them victory over the Blucerchiati, with four games still left to play in Serie A.

Ticket Touts Cashing In On Juventus
Champions League Match With Real Madrid

May 5, 2015

The scramble for a ticket to get in to watch this evening’s Champions League semi final clash between Juventus and Real Madrid has given Turin ticket touts the green light to charge incredible amounts of money for desperate fans that want to see the game at any cost.

The Bianconeri take on the Spanish giants at the Juventus Stadium later today and supporters from all corners of the globe are seemingly prepared to pay whatever is asked in order to watch their heroes in action.

According to Tuttosport, the game had long since been declared a ‘sell out’ but tickets are starting to exchange hands from between €500 and as much as €3500, with touts reaping the benefits.

The official Juventus website has the most expensive seat at the ground costing €180, but with fans ready to pay almost 20 times face value, it seems that if you really do want a ticket, you can probably still get one.

Allegri’s Tactics Book Revealed By Spanish
Newspaper Ahead Of Juventus – Real Madrid Clash

May 5, 2015

Ahead of Juventus’ Champions League clash with Real Madrid, it appears members of the Spanish media have laid their hands on coach Massimiliano Allegri’s notes about the game.

The Bianconeri welcome the reigning European champions to the Juventus Stadium on Tuesday evening with Carlo Ancelotti apparently having a window into Allegri’s strategy.

Marca have seemingly gotten their hands on a photo of Allegri’s coaching notes on the game which give an indication as to how Juventus will handle Madrid.

It is stated that Real are weak down the left, and even more so should Ancelotti play Fabio Coentrao. Whilst also revealing that Allegri will play different stages of the game, allowing his team to rest, and choose the right moments to attack.

Areas in which they can put more pressure on their opponents and where best to regain possession were also seen.

Sergio Ramos is also noted as being ‘vulnerable’ and Juve will play with a back four.

Kroos: Real Madrid Wary Of Strong Juventus Defence

May 5, 2015

Real Madrid star Toni Kroos has praised opposition Juventus ahead of the first leg of the Champion’s league semi-final, though backs his side to progress in the competition.

The German midfielder stated the importance of the fixture admitting the game will be tough, noting the Bianconeri’s strong points, yet holds faith in his side to persevere in order to reach the final.

“We have prepared well,” he assured. “[Carlo] Ancelotti knows Juventus very well so I think he has prepared us in the best way.

“Juventus are good in defence, and they are quick playing on the counter so we will have to adapt to them.”

Madrid have the opportunity should they reach the final to be the first ever team to win back to back titles in the competition, however Kroos recognises that they will have to battle against a resilient side in order to do so.

“To have already reached the semi-finals is a great success. We are within the top four teams in Europe and we will do everything to reach the final.

“We are aware that no-one has ever won the Champions League two years in a row so we want to achieve this great goal.

“I am confident in my team’s ability to win.

“But first we have to face such a strong opponent in Juventus.”

Allegri to 'attack Madrid's left'

May 5, 2015

Spanish papers claim they found Max Allegri’s notes, giving tactical clues as to how Juventus will face Real Madrid.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final is in Turin tonight at 20.45 CET.

Marca published a picture of what they insist is a piece of paper left behind by Coach Allegri’s assistants, complete with drawings on the tactical approach.

It’s suggested the Bianconeri will attack more down the left flank, where they consider Fabio Coentrao to be a weak link in the Real Madrid defence.

This also confirmed it will be a four-man defence.

Leonardo: 'Juve better underdogs'

May 5, 2015

Leonardo believes Juventus are in “a more comfortable position” being underdogs against Real Madrid.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off in Turin tonight at 20.45 CET.

“Juve are certainly not starting out as favourites against Real Madrid, but perhaps that puts them in a more comfortable position and they could get an important boost from that,” the Brazilian told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

Sturaro starts Juve-Madrid?

May 5, 2015

There are reports Stefano Sturaro will be a surprise Juventus starter against Real Madrid, with Arturo Vidal behind the strikers.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off in Turin at 20.45 CET.

Italian and Spanish media are scrambling to find clues for the starting line-ups in tonight’s big game.

According to the latest rumours emerging, Max Allegri will pick Sturaro instead of Roberto Pereyra in his squad.

Playing the ex-Genoa man in a deeper role would push Vidal further forward as trequartista behind strikers Carlos Tevez and Alvaro Morata.

It’s going to be a four-man defence with Patrice Evra and Stephan Lichtsteiner as full-backs around Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

The midfield is completed by Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio.

Sturaro joined in the January transfer window from Genoa and recently turned 22. He has played only four previous minutes of Champions League football in one appearance.

Juventus (probable):
Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Evra; Sturaro, Pirlo, Marchisio; Vidal; Tevez, Morata

Carlo Ancelotti wants defensive improvement

May 5, 2015

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that his side will need to improve defensively if they are to overcome Juventus in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The goals have flowed for Los Blancos in recent weeks, but they have been guilty of some poor defensive mistakes.

Ahead of their first leg against Juve on Tuesday, Ancelotti has called on his team to remain solid at the back.

"We'll need to attack so we can obtain a decent result but more importantly we need to defend much better than we've been doing lately," the Italian told reporters.

"However, I've ruled out playing with three central defenders. We only did it for 10 minutes against Celta Vigo and for the last five minutes against Sevilla."

Real Madrid are attempting to become the first team to successfully defend the Champions League in the modern era.

Line-ups: Juventus-Real Madrid

May 5, 2015

Juventus make some surprise changes with Arturo Vidal behind the strikers against star-studded Real Madrid.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final kicks off in Turin at 20.45 CET.

There are 16 previous encounters between these sides and it’s a very even record with seven Bianconeri wins, eight for the Merengues and only one draw.

That was 2-2 in the group phase last season.

Juve are unbeaten in 12 European home matches and their last continental defeat here was against Bayern Munich in April 2013.

Among the absentees tonight are Paul Pogba, Luka Modric and Karim Benzema.

There had been concerns over the fitness levels of Gareth Bale, but he is in the starting XI with Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Isco.

Spanish newspaper Marca claimed they spotted the notes taken by Allegri’s assistant showing they would attack Real Madrid down the left, where Fabio Coentrao is the weakest link.

However, Coentrao is dropped to the bench instead.

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Evra; Marchisio, Pirlo, Sturaro; Vidal; Tevez, Morata

Juventus bench: Storari, Barzagli, Padoin, Pepe, Pereyra, Llorente, Matri

Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Pepe, Kroos, Isco, James, Bale, Ronaldo

Real Madrid bench: Keylor Navas, Coentrao, Chicharito, Lucas Silva, Arbeloa, Jese, Illara

Butragueno: 'An honour for Madrid'

May 5, 2015

Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said it is “an honour” to play the Champions League semi-final against Juventus.

“It’s a great game, a magnificent night to play in a wonderful stadium on a perfect pitch,” he told Sky Sport Italia ahead of tonight’s first leg in Turin.

“Juventus are a legendary club with a long history against Real Madrid.”

How has Carlo Ancelotti handled the build-up, especially as it is against one of his former clubs?

“Carlo is a very relaxed man in general, but we all know the importance of this game. It is an honour to play in the Champions League semi-final, the biggest club competition in the world.

“We hope the squad is at the level we think it is to play in the best possible way. It’s tough, as we are playing against a Juve side that has been working together for a long time.”

Alvaro Morata grew up in the Real Madrid youth academy and was sent to Juve in a complicated two-year loan deal with multiple options.

Is it strange for Butragueno to see Morata playing for Juventus against the Merengues tonight?

“We are happy for him, as he’s had a great campaign that without doubt was difficult at the start, as it always is for strikers adapting to Italian football.

“Obviously, we hope this will not be Morata’s night!”

Marotta: 'Juve plan Madrid surprise'

May 5, 2015

Beppe Marotta admits Real Madrid “are stronger on paper,” but Juventus can pull “the first of two surprises.”

“This is an extraordinary game for us and the stadium. It is the high point of our ambitions since we opened the arena,” director general Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“There is euphoria and playing after winning the Scudetto only serves to further get everyone involved.

“Clearly on paper Real Madrid are stronger, but the great thing about football is that predictions are not always accurate and there can be surprises.

“We hope tonight will be the first of two surprises.”

Marotta was asked whether he was anxious, as this is Juve’s first Champions League semi-final since 2003.

“I was much more anxious against Fiorentina and Lazio, when there were still some uncertainties in the Serie A title race.

“We are more relaxed going into this game. We want to play this all the way with the utmost motivation.

“A match like this fires you up regardless, especially as it’s the first time for many of these lads in a Champions League semi-final.

“This kind of emotion can be an important push against players who on paper are stronger.”

HT 1-1: Morata and Juve scare Madrid

May 5, 2015

Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo were on target as Juventus and Real Madrid are 1-1 at the break, but James Rodriguez hit the bar.

This was the Bianconeri’s first Champions League semi-final since 2003, when they eliminated Real Madrid 4-3 on aggregate. Paul Pogba and Kwadwo Asamoah were still sidelined, but Max Allegri surprisingly gave Stefano Sturaro his first Champions League start, moving Arturo Vidal to the trequartista role. Carlo Ancelotti’s trophy holders missed Luka Modric and Karim Benzema, but dropped Fabio Coentrao and started Gareth Bale despite recently recovering from a calf injury.

Vidal wasted a golden opportunity in the opening minute, hesitating to shoot and going down far too easily. Sturaro also fired an angled drive at Iker Casillas, while Leo Bonucci was booked within five minutes and Alvaro Morata’s lob did not surprise the goalkeeper.

Juve were attacking well and took a deserved lead, as Carlos Tevez’s shot went through Raphael Varane’s legs to force an impressive Casillas save, but only as far as Morata’s tap-in. It was a special moment for the player who left Real Madrid last summer and could still return in future, but he did not celebrate.

Gigi Buffon got down brilliantly to fingertip a Toni Kroos missile round the base of the near post, as it bounced right in front of him.

Sturaro redirected a Tevez strike on to the upright, but the ex-Genoa midfielder was offside. Ronaldo pulled an angled drive wide, as did Stephan Lichtsteiner in a position where he really should’ve crossed.

Real Madrid had a period of pressure and it paid off at the end of a long passing move. James Rodriguez lobbed a cross to the back stick, where Ronaldo was totally unmarked to nod in from a yard. It was his 76th goal, making him the all-time Champions League top scorer.

Claudio Marchisio drilled wide, but Real Madrid almost took the lead on 41 minutes. Isco crossed from the left for a James diving header on to the bar from close range, then Marcelo volleyed the rebound just over.

Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid: Tevez penalty
gives Bianconeri first-leg advantage

The Argentine fired home a second-half spot-kick, which he had earned himself,
after Cristiano Ronaldo had cancelled out Alvaro Morata's early opener in Turin.

Carlos Tevez's penalty handed Juventus a crucial lead as they beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg.

Juve, crowned Serie A champions for a fourth year in a row on Saturday, were rewarded for a bright start when former Real striker Alvaro Morata opened the scoring from close range in Turin.

Massimiliano Allegri's side were soon pegged back, though, as Cristiano Ronaldo - who scored three times against Juve in last season's group stages - headed home a close-range equaliser from James Rodriguez's sublime cross.

Holders Real wasted a great chance shortly before the break when Rodriguez somehow headed against the crossbar from three yards with the goal unguarded.

That miss ultimately proved costly as Juve were awarded a penalty just before the hour when Dani Carvajal felled Tevez, and the Argentina forward emphatically dispatched his spot-kick.

Juve therefore hold a narrow advantage ahead of next week's return leg in Madrid, although Ronaldo's away goal - his 76th in the Champions League, one more than his great rival Lionel Messi - could prove crucial.

The hosts took the game to Real from the off, and a poor clearance from Iker Casillas almost led to a chance for Arturo Vidal.

Casillas was then equal to Morata's audacious lob, but the ex-Real man did get on the scoresheet in the eighth minute.

Tevez's low shot across the face of goal was only parried by Casillas and Morata tapped in the rebound, the striker recognising the goal against his former club with muted celebrations.

Real gained a foothold in the game after the opener, as Toni Kroos' low 25-yard drive drew a fine stop from Gianluigi Buffon before Ronaldo raced clear and dragged a left-foot shot wide.

And the holders' pressure told in the 27th minute. An extended period of possession led to Rodriguez looping an exquisite half-volleyed cross from the right of the penalty area that Ronaldo nodded home from a yard out.

The visitors should have had the lead heading into the break as another flowing attack ended with Rodriguez heading Isco's delivery against the crossbar when it appeared easier to score.

After a cautious opening to the second half, the tie took a twist in the 57th minute.

Tevez led a lightning Juve counter-attack from his own half and Carjaval sent the former Manchester City man tumbling when he tried to nick the ball, leaving referee Martin Atkinson with no choice but to award a penalty.

And there was no mistake from Tevez, who drilled his shot straight down the middle to register his 29th goal of another prolific season.

Real threw numbers forward in an attempt to find the leveller, and Ronaldo let Juve off the hook when he failed to guide Rodriguez's left-wing cross on target.

Juve could have had a third in injury time when substitute Fernando Llorente headed Andrea Pirlo's teasing free-kick straight at Casillas, but Allegri is sure to be satisfied with a one-goal lead.

CL: Juventus beat Real Madrid

Alvaro Morata and a Carlos Tevez penalty saw Juventus beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League semi-final.

The second leg is at the Bernabeu next Wednesday and the Bianconeri can qualify even with a draw.

Real Madrid had a corner from which Marcelo’s shot was charged down, but it sparked a rapid counter that saw Tevez brought down by Dani Carvajal. Apache got back up to convert the penalty with power and put Juventus in front once again with his seventh Champions League goal of the season.

Ronaldo just failed to get on the end of a smart James flick and Andrea Barzagli replaced Sturaro, moving Juventus to a 3-5-2 system.

Carvajal avoided a booking for giving away the penalty, but did get a card on 75 minutes, so could easily have been sent off in Turin.

Another Varane error saw Fernando Llorente go round Casillas to pull back from the by-line, but the pass was intercepted for Vidal in front of an open goal.

In stoppages Pirlo’s free kick found Llorente, but the header into the ground was straight at Casillas from point-blank range.

Carlos Tevez hands Juventus first-leg advantage

245zdlf.jpg

May 5, 2015

Juventus moved to within 90 minutes of a first Champions League final since 2003 courtesy of a 2-1 victory in the first leg of their last-four clash with Real Madrid this evening.

The Italian champions remain on course for the treble this season going into the second leg at the Bernabeu next week, while Madrid need to win in the Spanish capital to stand any chance of continuing the defence of their crown.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks in Turin, putting Madrid under heavy early pressure with Arturo Vidal, Stefano Sturaro and Alvaro Morata all threatening Iker Casillas's goal in the opening exchanges.

They made their early dominance count too, taking the lead through Morata in the eighth minute as the Spaniard tapped home unmarked at the back post after Casillas could only tip a powerful low Carlos Tevez effort into the striker's path.

Morata refused to celebrate against his former club, but his current employers showed little mercy as they continued their fast start to the tie.

Gianluigi Buffon needed to get down smartly to tip a Toni Kroos drive past the post, but the visitors were soon on the back foot once again as Sergio Ramos gave the ball away cheaply, only to have his blushes spared by an offside flag raised against a prone Sturaro.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first real sight of goal did not come until the 24th minute when he dragged an effort wide of the far post having beaten the offside trap, while moments later down the other end Stephan Lichtsteiner sliced his shot past the near post when well placed.

That miss would prove to be costly as Madrid levelled things up against the run of play just a couple of minutes later. James Rodriguez looped a cross over a helpless Buffon, leaving Ronaldo with the simplest of finishes to nod home a record 76th Champions League goal, nine of which have come in semi-finals.

The equaliser turned the match in Madrid's favour and they should have gone into the break ahead after James somehow sent a diving header crashing against the crossbar from point-blank range with the whole goal to aim at.

Juve attempted to make a similarly fast start to the second half as they did in the first, with Tevez drawing a routine stop from Casillas in the opening minutes.

It was the Argentine who created and scored Juve's second goal, with the Italian champions hitting Madrid on the break to regain their advantage. Tevez burst forward on the counter-attack and, despite Morata being felled off the ball by Marcelo, continued his run and eventually drew the foul from Dani Carvajal inside the box.

The hosts' calls for a red card went unheeded by referee Martin Atkinson, but Tevez ensured that there would be further punishment by firing straight down the middle from the penalty spot for his seventh Champions League goal of the season - more than he had managed in his previous five campaigns combined.

Carlo Ancelotti responded to that setback by bringing on quarter-final hero Javier Hernandez, and the Mexican striker almost made an immediate impact when he flicked the ball just beyond Ronaldo sliding in at the back post.

The visitors continued to apply the pressure as the match wore on, but Juventus seemed content to settle for a one-goal advantage to take back to the Spanish capital next week.

It could have been even better for the hosts when Raphael Varane failed to cut out a long ball forward down the right channel, but Fernando Llorente was forced too far wide by Casillas and saw his subsequent cut-back intercepted by the backtracking defenders.

Hernandez then fizzed a low ball into a dangerous area at the other end which flew through to safety, before Llorente spurned a glorious chance to double his side's advantage with a header at the back post that lacked power.

An open ending to the match brought about no further goals, however, as Juventus held out to pick up a 2-1 victory that puts the tie narrowly in their favour ahead of the second leg.

Juventus beat Real Madrid thanks
to penalty from Carlos Tevez

May 5, 2015

Former Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata came back to haunt his old club as he sent Juventus on their way to a 2-1 victory over the holders in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal on Tuesday.

Morata, who moved to Juventus last summer shortly after helping Madrid to a record 10th European Cup title, didn't celebrate after scoring the opening goal in the ninth minute.

Cristiano Ronaldo overtook Lionel Messi to become the competition's all-time top scorer with Madrid's equaliser in the 27th minute but his former Manchester United teammate Carlos Tevez also continued his fantastic season as he restored Juventus' lead from the spot shortly before the hour after being brought down by Dani Carvajal.

Juventus, who last won the competition 19 years ago, will continue their bid to reach their first final since 2003 in the return leg in Madrid on May 13.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, the newly crowned Italian champions had the better of a frantic opening period.

The fans bayed for a penalty in the opening minute when Arturo Vidal fell between two Madrid players and Morata also went close.

The Spaniard did get his goal moments later. Claudio Marchisio slotted the ball through to Tevez and, although Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas got a hand to the Argentine's shot, he only succeeded in deflecting the ball to Morata, who tapped in from close range.

That was Juve's fourth shot on target in the opening nine minutes but it was to prove their last on goal of the first half as Madrid slowly got into the game.

Toni Kroos almost levelled immediately but Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon dived smartly to his right to turn the shot around his post.

Ronaldo had been kept fairly quiet apart from an early free kick which came off a Juventus defender in the wall. But he also went close to the equaliser when he sprung the offside trap to run onto a through-ball from Isco but could only send his effort wide of the right upright.

However, Ronaldo did level minutes later, heading into an empty net from close range after James Rodriguez hooked in a cross from the right of the penalty area.

It was the Portugal star's 76th goal in the competition -- one more than Lionel Messi, whose Barcelona side host Bayern Munich in the other semifinal on Wednesday.

Rodriguez almost got on the scoresheet himself four minutes from halftime but he headed Alarcon's cross off the bar from five yards out and Marcelo volleyed the rebound narrowly over the bar.

Juventus had earlier had a chance to restore their lead but Marchisio's long-range effort flashed just wide of the left upright.

The Italian side were under pressure from Madrid at the start of the second period and they was camped inside their own half in the build-up to their second goal.

A corner was cleared to Tevez, who went on a blistering run down almost the entire length of the field before being brought down by Carvajal.

The tension was palpable and the normally ice-cool Buffon couldn't even bear to look, standing in his goal with his back to the action. However, Tevez blasted his spot-kick straight down the middle for his 29th goal of the season.

Madrid brought on Javier Hernandez, who had scored the late winner in his side's 1-0 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals, and he almost leveled but just failed to get on the end of a cross from Sergio Ramos.

Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid: Tevez
Gives Bianconeri Slender Lead

2mfedx.jpg

May 5, 2015

Juventus will take a slim advantage to the Estadio Bernabeu after running out 2-1 winners over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at the Juventus Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Bianconeri took the lead in the eighth minute through an Alvaro Morata tap in before Cristiano Ronaldo struck with a close range header to level the tie. Carlos Tevez netted the winner for the Old Lady with a second half penalty.

Alvaro Morata looked dangerous against his former employers who released him last year. The Spaniard tested Iker Casillas early on with a delicately lob which the Madrid keeper was equal to.

Undeterred, he came back to haunt Los Blancos two minutes later. Some horrendous positioning from Marcelo left Carlos Tevez in acres of space inside the area. His shot across the goal could only be palmed out by Casillas straight into the path of Morata at the far post who finished and respectfully contained his jubilation.

But if the opening stages of this match had belonged to Massimiliano Allegri’s side, the latter part of the first half belonged to the visitors.

Toni Kroos and Ronaldo both fired warning shots from range before Carlo Ancelotti’s team broke through just before the half hour mark.

A quick exchange of passes left Patrice Evra for dead and found James Rodriguez in the area who flicked the ball across the goalmouth and towards Ronaldo for the competition’s all-time top goalscorer to nod in his 9th of the campaign unchallenged from point blank.

Madrid should have been ahead before half time. Daniel Carvajal surged down the left wing and laid the ball off to Isco on the overlap who cut the ball back from the byline. Rodriguez launched himself at the ball with a diving header but the Colombian’s effort thudded off the crossbar.

Both sides continued to show intent in the second half, with Madrid slightly on top.

But a Madrid corner in the 57th minute backfired. Tevez picked up the ball from a clearing header and brought it away on the break from inside his own half and steamed into the area before going down under a challenge from Carvajal – leaving Martin Atkinson no choice but to point to the spot.

The Argentine stepped up and calmly stroked the ball down the middle as Casillas guessed wrong and dived to his left and suddenly Juventus had a precious advantage against the defending champions.

Allegri seemed satisfied with the narrow lead, and brought on Andrea Barzagli for the hardworking Stefano Sturaro to sure things up defensively with a back three.

Los Meringues pushed for a second equaliser, controlling the possession and frequently occupying their opponent’s half, but a clear cut chance wouldn’t fall their way.

With the centre of the field congested, Madrid opted to push out wide and get crosses into the box, but time and time again they couldn’t find their targets with a couple too high for a leaping Ronaldo and the Bianconeri defence imperiously heading balls clear.

Substitute Fernando Llorente almost increased the advantage when he got clear and touched the ball round Casillas, but he was pushed too wide by his countryman and his ball back to Roberto Pereyra was intercepted.

As the minutes ticked down, the Old Lady looked to ensure the victory and keep hold of the ball. As Madrid seemed to have run out of ideas, the final whistle sounded with Juventus ahead at the halfway stage of the tie.

Pirlo: 'Juve sent a message'

1z5i2xj.jpg

May 5, 2015

Andrea Pirlo said Juventus “sent the message that we are here and we want this Final” after beating Real Madrid.

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final ended 2-1 in Turin with Alvaro Morata, a Carlos Tevez penalty and Cristiano Ronaldo header.

“We sent the message that we are here, we want this Final and we’ll fight to the end in Madrid too,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.
“It was a game, there is another and we need the same belief and focus. We have to go to Madrid with the confidence we can get to the Final.

“We need to repeat this performance with technique and concentration.”

The Champions League Final is in Berlin, which is also where Pirlo and many of his Juve teammates won the World Cup with Italy in 2006.

“The phrase 'We're going to Berlin' always remains in my head, I hope it can happen again. Is it destiny? I hope so.”

This week Pirlo said in an interview that he’d leave Juventus if he won the Champions League. Does he stand by that?

“Let’s win it first and then we’ll see,” he smiled.

Allegri: 'Great Juve intensity'

91cg3a.jpg

May 5, 2015

Max Allegri was still not entirely content after Juventus beat Real Madrid, but praised their “intensity.”

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final ended 2-1 in Turin with Alvaro Morata, a Carlos Tevez penalty and Cristiano Ronaldo header.

“I am very happy with what the lads did. This is the right reward that they deserved, as it’s not easy to reach the Champions League semi-final and especially to play against Real Madrid,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We played with great intensity and allowed Real Madrid very little, but could’ve done better in the pace of creating our play in the first half.

“It’s a shame, as we could’ve done better with the Llorente chance, but I’d have been happy beforehand to get a win over Real Madrid.

“Now we can prepare for a week and can fight it out in Madrid.”

Allegri started out with 4-3-1-2, but then moved to 3-5-2 with Andrea Barzagli coming off the bench. Which system will he use at the Bernabeu?

“You’re asking too much! The game just ended! I think tonight the lads defended very well with four, though it was not easy to leave Andrea out. I had to make a choice and he did great coming off the bench.

“With Bonucci booked, I had to take fewer risks and have another defender near him.”

The real surprise was picking Stefano Sturaro rather than Roberto Pereyra, a player who only had four minutes of Champions League experience before this.

“I made this choice because, Pereyra can change the game off the bench and Sturaro was in good shape. I needed someone with legs to help the defence.

“The lads did very well to defend with four in midfield and then to take turns blocking Sergio Ramos.

“The players know I am very demanding on control and the passage of play, so I feel we could’ve done better in the first half to pass it around quickly and get the ball between the Real Madrid midfielders.

“That doesn’t take away from the fact they did very well and I am very happy with what they are doing.

“We started the Champions League in a certain way and it’s different to Serie A, we need to face these games with more calm and maturity. It’s practically impossible to press a team for 90 minutes and they can score in 10.

“It’s important to read the game, know when it’s time to slow down, time to step up the pace and change gear. The team has definitely improved on that.”

Buffon: 'Juve proved themselves'

av3ns6.jpg

May 5, 2015

Juventus captain Gigi Buffon said “the important thing was to prove we could play Real Madrid on level terms.”

The Bianconeri won the first leg of the Champions League semi-final 2-1 in Turin.

“We could’ve won 3-1 and they could’ve equalised for 2-2, so with a clear head – which I don’t have right now! – we are happy,” the goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia.

“The important thing tonight was to prove we could play the Champions of Europe on level terms. I think even 1-1 would’ve been acceptable.

“It was a bit like a boxing match, we took turns hitting each other, and I expect the second leg will be similar.

“Real Madrid are a great team, but at this level even though on paper they are stronger than us, we can challenge them in terms of hunger, enthusiasm and athleticism.

“The great thing about football is that the strongest don’t always win. In the short term the best on the night win, in the long-term it’s the strongest overall who win.”

Buffon performed an important early save on Toni Kroos, as it bounced right in front of him.

“It was a save that let’s say had an elevated level of difficulty,” he smiled.

When Carlos Tevez took the spot-kick, Buffon had his back turned.

“I’ve been doing that since the 2006 World Cup Final. I just focused on a single Italy fan and when he got up, I knew we’d scored!”

Ancelotti: 'Unlucky Real Madrid'

mlii5g.jpg

May 5, 2015

Carlo Ancelotti felt Real Madrid were “unlucky,” explained his Andrea Pirlo approach and “this was the Juventus I expected.”

The first leg of the Champions League semi-final ended 2-1 in Turin, so the reigning trophy holders must win at the Bernabeu to qualify.

“Juventus pressed more in the second half and we had a few more problems, which became even more difficult to find spaces when they moved to 3-5-2,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were unlucky on the second goal, as a shot was charged down and this counter-attack started. The real bad luck was when we hit the crossbar.”

Opponents usually man-mark or press Pirlo in midfield, but Ancelotti explained that can be risky too.

“Pressure on Pirlo made us open up our midfield line too much and it allowed them to find a through ball for Tevez, something that happened a lot in the first half. We preferred to give him more room to prevent that.

“This was the Juve I expected, determined, well organised and taking their chances. It was a balanced game and an entertaining one too.

“In the second leg we will above all need a patient Real Madrid.”
