Allegri: 'No Juve hangover'

Max Allegri assured Juventus have no Champions League hangover and will focus on Genoa, but “we’re not at our best yet.”

It kicks off on Sunday at 15.00 CET.

“We are absolutely not still ‘drunk’ from Dortmund,” smiled the Coach in his Press conference after a 3-0 Champions League triumph over Borussia.

“We did great work, achieved our objective of qualification and now prepare for the quarter-final. If Monaco got this far, it means they have quality. It’s not easy to eliminate Arsenal, after all.

“Were we fortunate to get them in the draw? I think the expectations can be overturned. Maybe the other clubs were the ones breathing a sigh of relief that they didn’t pick us out of the hat.”

The Coach was not wanted by many fans when he replaced Antonio Conte, but is this now Allegri’s Juve?

“I’m pretty sure that for over 100 years it has been Agnelli’s Juve... I believe in my work and in balance, then the quality of the squad will emerge.

“We’re in great shape, but not at our best yet. The ambition is to improve this journey and to become consistently one of the top eight teams in Europe.”

The Bianconeri are 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A table and hope to further extend that advantage against Genoa tomorrow afternoon.

“It is a difficult test, as Genoa have already beaten us this season. They also had a full week to prepare for this match, so we need to be at the top of our game.
“Genoa picked up 20 points on their travels and have fought back from a losing situation seven times. We cannot afford to underestimate any game, especially against a gritty Genoa side.

“This match and the two after the break for international duty will be decisive for the end of the season, as we don’t want to get into trouble. If we do well, then we can focus on the Coppa Italia semi-final and the Champions League quarter-final with Monaco.

“Right now we must grit our teeth, because we’ve got to be better than three months ago.”

Allegri also stood up for Italian football as a whole, insisting the 14-point gap did not mean the other teams are poor.

“I do not agree with this denigration of Serie A, as it is a very tough League. If there are three Italian clubs still in Europe, it means our football is not as disastrous as some would have you think.

“In Italy we tend to get depressed and underestimate what we have here. It’s normal that there are going to be different eras, but Italian football has always been at a high level and this year is a good sign.”

Paul Pogba is out for almost two months, but Allegri confirmed Alessandro Matri, Claudio Marchisio and Stefano Sturaro are available, while Andrea Pirlo will be back after the break.

Andrea Barzagli is returning to full fitness after eight months out and could receive an Italy call-up this week.

“At this stage of the year, those who haven’t played as much are the ones who can secure the most important points.

“Roma can still get back into the title race, as I think we need 83 points to win it. Do I have advice for Rudi Garcia? No. It’s not at all easy to win in Italy, especially for a big club, as everyone puts in the performance of a lifetime against you.”

Sunday afternoon will see Juventus welcome Genoa, as they look to avenge their only loss of the season.

Massimiliano Allegri's men can be forgiven if they don't look entirely motivated against Genoa on Sunday. After their triumph in Dortmund midweek to reach the Champions League quarterfinals and a comfortable 14 point lead atop the Serie A table, the most difficult part of Allegri's job for the remainder of the season may be keeping his side focused on the task at hand.

However, considering the club have only attained four straight Scudetti once in their history, the feat should provide all the inspiration Juventus need to see out the remainder of the Serie A campaign. Allegri will look to utilize his deep bench and give some playing time to those who haven't seen much of it in recent weeks.

The Bianconeri will not have it easy on Sunday though, as they take on a rested Genoa side looking to do the double over them this season.

Genoa had a brilliant start to the campaign, but have only managed to win two games since beating Milan on December 7th. Despite their struggles though, they remain in eighth place and in the hunt for a European spot next season.

While Gian Piero Gasperini suggested his side's defeat against Chievo last weekend was 'unexpected', it could have been detrimental to their European aspirations. He will need to find a way to get his side back on track if they are going to have any chance of catching the teams ahead of them.

Indeed, Sunday's tilt between Juventus and Genoa should be a wildly unpredictable affair that could see either team grind out the result.

 

Keep an eye on: Alessandro Matri (Juventus) - When Genoa beat Juventus back on October 29th, Matri provided the crucial assist on Luca Antonini's game winner. Less than six months later, Matri finds himself on the opposite side. Given that his team travelled to Germany on Wednesday, don't be surprised to see Allegri use Matri from the start.

Gasperini: Genoa Will Look To Beat Juventus

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini wants to put Juventus in difficulty as he looks to do the double over the Bianconeri.

The Grifone earned a 1-0 win over Juve in the match at the Stadio Ferraris earlier in the season, though the last time Genoa won in Torino was back in January 1991.

“The game will give us an opportunity to put in a good performance,” he told the press.

“Bring home the points will allow us to make up for the dropped points against Chievo before the break. We can then reorganise and regroup.

“Juve’s attack is of the highest quality and it is proving to be the best in Italy.

“It wasn’t easy for [Massimiliano] Allegri to take over from [Antonio] Conte, but he has been very good over the months since he took over as he has made his stamp on the team.

“It won’t be an easy match, but we want to do everything we can to put Juve in difficulty. We can only cope against his team with the right mindset.”

Juventus will be without Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba for the visit of Genoa as they look to avenge their only loss of the season.

The Bianconeri are 14 points clear and seemingly have one hand on the title but injuries have taken their toll in recent weeks, with Paul Pogba being the latest casualty. The French midfielder will miss the much of the remainder of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in the 3-0 win against Dortmund midweek.

Claudio Marchisio was suffering from a bout of flu but has recovered in time to make the squad along with Stefano Sturaro who may get his chance to shine following Pogba’s injury. “Sturaro can fill Marchisio’s role in front of the defence, or can play where Pogba does” Allegri said of Italy U21 midfielder just last week.

The injuries in midfield may force Allegri’s hand once again, meaning 3-5-2 will be the starting formation in place of 4-3-1-2. Buffon will play in goal with a back three of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and possibly Angelo Ogbonna who may play in place of Giorgio Chiellini.

The midfield will choose itself given the injury problems with Claudio Marchisio, Arturo Vidal and one of either Roberto Pereyra or Stefano Sturaro on the left. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Patrice Evra will likely play as the full-backs while Alvaro Morata is suspended so Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez will start up front.

Genoa

In the last six matches, Genoa have collected two wins, three ties and one loss, but it’s hard to draw any conclusion as the results have been very inconsistent. For instance, they deservedly beat Lazio and Hellas Verona and stopped Fiorentina (1-1), but they also stumbled against Empoli (1-1) and the last performance against Chievo Verona (0-2) was awful. It’s a rollercoaster ride.

For most part of the season, they have been really good: they are in seventh position, eight point clear from the crosstown rival Sampdoria, which would qualify to Europa League as it stands. Genoa need to pick the pace if they want to make a real run at the sixth place. They need to improve their home record (4W, 6D, 4L), but they’ll face Juventus on the road, where they have been fairly good (5W, 5D, 3L).

Two key elements of the squad are suspended for this match: the Venezuelan midfielder Tomas Rincon and former Juventus bust Iago Falque. The always tactically eccentric Gian Piero Gasperini often used a weird lineup with Rincon as RWB as of late, so he’ll return to a more normal formation without him, with two real energetic wing backs, Edenilson and Zakarya Bergdich.

Replacing Falque (six goals, three assists on the season) is trickier from a “philosophical” standpoint: the coach could choose a dynamic player like Maxime Lestienne (who hasn’t matched the pre-season expectations) or Diego Laxalt and keep using Diego Perotti as falso-nueve, which has been their signature skill lately. Or he can field a real centre-forward (Marco Borriello or Leonardo Pavoletti), tweaking their recent strategy. Or he can complete the trident with Juraj Kucka as CAM à la Hamsik (the returning Tino Costa or Rolando Mandragora would fill in the midfield if that’s the case). Whatever he picks, I think there will be a drop-off in quality.

The rest of the team is just solid overall. Facundo Roncaglia, Nicolas Burdisso and Sebastien De Maio, three physical centre-backs whom I don’t think are that good taken singularly, have benefitted greatly from playing with each with continuity. Andrea Bertolacci has deservedly become a regular start and the standout goalkeeper Mattia Perin has saved day in a spectacular fashion several times.

Even when they don’t have a tall presence in the box, the flank play have always been very strong. Whatever the combination on the two wings is, they create many chances by crossing or cutting from a wide position. The move to Genoa has re-energized M’Baye Niang (three goals since January) and Perotti, even if he doesn’t score a lot, is their leader in the pitch. Surely defending a trio of wings in constant motion, should they field Lestienne, would be a bigger challenge for Juventus than man marking a true centre-forward. They like to play with a high defensive line and maybe Juventus could take advantage of that like they did in Dortmund. But, especially, Genoa like to play football and they don’t just park the bus and wait for the right opportunity to counter so it should be a fun match.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has tried to tamper enthusiasm at the club as the Bianconeri prepare to welcome Genoa to the Juventus Stadium on Sunday.

Spirits are high at the Turin club after securing passage to the quarter-finals of the Champions League thanks to a 5-1 aggregate victory over Borussia Dortmund and despite the achievement, the tactician knows that the Grifone will provide a stern test.

“We made it through the round and now we will prepare for the quarter-finals,” Allegri pointed out at his pre-match press conference.

“Genoa have achieved 20 points away from home, they’ve come back from losing positions on seven occasions.

“They’ve been preparing all week and we only started today. They also beat us in the first match.

“Then we have Empoli at home and Parma away from home which will be key for the season. We must be at our best to prepare for the quarter-finals and the Coppa Italia.

“Matches are to be won because tomorrow’s starts at 0-0. Genoa are tough and do not allow you to play.

“Good work has been done by everyone in order to improve, to compete in Europe we must still do more.”

Allegri also commented on the future of star midfielder Paul Pogba, with Pavel Nedved confirming reports that Paris Saint-Germain are interested in his signature.

“We now nothing about the future. We still have important matches to play. The fact that he is being looked at by important clubs is normal.

“We are amongst the top eight in Europe and we hope to be in the top four, therefore I believe everyone would like to stay or come here.”

A newfound calm after the storm

I don't want to sound overconfident or anything, but life in Juventus land is pretty good right now.

These days, things are understandably very pleasant and cheerful around the training grounds at Vinovo. Juventus are cruising to another Scudetto, have gotten a relatively favorable draw in the Champions League quarterfinals, and can only extend their Serie A lead further with a win Sunday afternoon. Doesn't that just sound like a wonderful thing?

Just think about it for a second: With a win over Genoa on Sunday, Juventus would push the Serie A lead to a completely ridiculous yet wonderful 17 points. With draw-happy Roma playing Cesena later in the day, it may not stay there for very long, but as we've seen with Rudi Garcia's squad lately, anything is possible.

Well, except picking up three points on a consistent basis — especially against low-table teams just about everybody around the country assumes they will beat.

You know how you keep that moment going into the international break? By getting some sweet, sweet on Genoa.

The same Genoa team that beat Juventus thanks to Luca Antonini's goal with about 10 seconds to spare in stoppage time back in late October at the Luigi Ferraris. The same Genoa team that saw Juventus put in one their worst performances of the season. It was one of the final games in which Max Allegri used the 3-5-2 formation as his default tactical layout.

What would enacting revenge mean to the Juventus squad? Considering that the loss to Genoa was one of the low points of the season, I would like to think they want to show Genoa just how far they've come since that day.

It'd be just another day in paradise, right? Well, that is if the forecasted rain lets up a little bit. But other than that, things are feeling pretty grand in the Juventus part of the world.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. Will there be a Champions League hangover?

With a huge and comfortable 14-point Serie A lead, these kinds of things are probably little more forgivable compared to a close race for the Scudetto. But still, Juventus' win over Dortmund on Wednesday night was thrilling and certainly didn't lack when it came to physical exertion. There are so many injuries within the Juve ranks right now that squad rotation after the Dortmund win is pretty much non-existent outside of a few selective positions. There will obviously be a Fernando Llorente sighting because of Morata's suspension, maybe a different defender or two in the starting lineup, but not much else because of all the limited options Allegri has at his disposal. That means a lot of the same players who were on the field on Wednesday will be starting against Genoa, boys and girls.

2. What formation is Max Allegri going to use?

Allegri hasn't been shy this season about switching formations based on the players available to him. But what he hasn't experienced yet as Juventus manager is this kind of injury situation at one position like is currently going on in the central midfield. No matter if it's 3-5-2 (the most likely formation at this point), 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3, there will be the need for at least three midfielders to play in the center of the park. Luckily for Allegri, he's got a couple versatile players to turn to and an extremely friendly 14-point lead to ease the pain entering the final game before the first international break of the calendar year. With Claudio Marchisio recovering from the flu, I'll put my money on Allegri rolling with a 3-5-2 based on the fact that the team's centerbacks are pretty much all healthy sans Cáceres. He's done it once before, and he's likely to do it again. (You've been had, Max!)

3. Slowing down Genoa's success away from home.

You don't need to tell Max Allegri twice when it comes to how well Genoa have played away from their home ground this season.

Why yes, all of that is true. In fact, there are only five teams in all of Serie A who have been better away from home than Genoa has this season. Out of their 37 total points, 20 of those have come on the road. The only other teams who are better than Genoa in that aspect of things are either going to be playing for Europe next season or are at least in contention for a top-five finish. That's part of the reason why Gian Piero Gasperini's squad were hanging around one of those European places earlier this season. While they've cooled off a little bit since then, Genoa are far and away the more rested side between themselves and Juventus, like Allegri said at his pre-match press conference.

4. Will Mattia Perin go H.A.M. against Juventus once again?

WhoSocred's Opta-based rating system isn't really oriented to show you the full impact of a goalkeeper, but Mr. Perin sure does know how to make the darn thing love him. Since putting on a Genoa jersey, Perin has finished with ratings in the 8s and been named Man of the Match once in three games against Juventus. Of course, the WhoScored ratings aren't the be-all, end-all figures for evaluating players, but I can tell you this — Perin is good, and especially so when he plays against Juventus. And at the tender age of 22 years old, there's no reason to think he won't get better as the months and years go by. Maybe it's because one of his idols, Gigi Buffon, is in the other goal, but Perin doing insane things in goal against seems to be a common occurrence. It's like the teacher watching the student do exactly what he taught him to do, only with Perin looking like a member of the Beatles or something.

Alvaro Morata is suspended, while Paul Pogba has been ruled out for 50 days by a thigh injury he sustained during the 3-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Max Allegri switches back to the 3-5-2 system, mirroring Genoa’s 3-4-3 approach.

Alessandro Matri can expect to come off the bench and face the club he left in January.

HT 1-0: Tevez rocket stuns Genoa

A Carlos Tevez rocket off the underside of the crossbar has given Juventus the 1-0 half-time lead over Genoa.

The Grifone had only ever won this fixture twice in 1937 and 1991, since that Tomas Skuhravy goal managing just three draws and eight defeats. However, they were the only Serie A side to have beaten Juve this season, a Luca Antonelli goal at the 94th minute securing that October result.

Alvaro Morata, Iago Falque and Tomas Rincon were suspended, joining the injured Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo, Martin Caceres, Paolo De Ceglie, Romulo and Lorenzo Ariaudo.

M’Baye Niang curled wide after two minutes when Leonardo Bonucci gave away possession, while Fernando Llorente’s effort was charged down in the box.

Andrea Bertolacci’s deflected shot turned into an assist for Maxime Lestienne, Gigi Buffon having to rush out and palm the ball off his feet during a period of Genoa pressure.

Carlos Tevez is on stunning form and got his 16th Serie A goal of the season. He gathered outside the box, burst past a defender and smashed an unstoppable strike in off the underside of the bar from a tight angle. The ferocity of the shot made it impossible to reach.

Diego Perotti and Bertolacci failed to trouble Buffon from distance, but Juve almost made it 2-0 before the break. A corner found Llorente’s header, beaten off the line by Mattia Perin, then Tevez’s attempt was charged down and Giorgio Chiellini fired the rebound on to the crossbar.

Carlos Tevez was the hero as his first half strike helped Juventus see off Genoa 1-0 on Sunday.
The Argentine, who notched a double to help dump Borussia Dortmund out of the Champions League in midweek, lit up the contest with a brilliant solo goal after 25 minutes.

It was not a flawless performance from the former Manchester City man, who saw a second-half penalty saved, but a third consecutive league win and a 17-point lead at the summit rarely appeared to be in doubt.

Roma, currently on a dismal run of form in second place, can close that substantial gap when they face Cesena on Sunday.

A slack pass from Leonardo Bonucci presented Niang with the opportunity to give Genoa a second-minute lead, but the forward curled narrowly wide from 20 yards.

Neither defence looked particularly assured during the opening exchanges and Facundo Roncaglia made a last-ditch block to deny Juventus striker Fernando Llorente.

Genoa felt they should have had a penalty in the 14th minute, but Diego Perotti was booked for simulation following a challenge from Claudio Marchisio.

Juventus continued to struggle for fluency but a moment of magic from Tevez put them ahead.

The Argentina forward slipped past a pair of defenders on a typically bustling run before firing home an angled shot via the underside of the crossbar for his 16th Serie goal of the season.

The visitors' early verve disappeared and it was almost 2-0 on the stroke of half-time as Giorgio Chiellini struck the crossbar when Genoa failed to fully clear a corner.

Mattia Perin was injured in the build-up to the Chiellini chance and was replaced by understudy Eugenio Lamanna soon after.

And, as he did after emerging from the bench against Roma in December, Lamanna thwarted the opposition from the penalty spot.

Roncaglia was penalised for a trip on Roberto Pereyra but Tevez failed to convert his 62nd minute spot kick as the keeper produced a diving save to keep his side in the game.

Genoa's best chance for a leveller came 10 minutes from time, as Andrea Barzagli cleared brilliantly to deny Perotti at the far post, but they could not find a way through, with Juventus continuing their march towards the title.

Juventus defeated Genoa 1-0 at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Serie A.

The game was decided in the first half when centre-forward Carlos Tevez produced a brilliant run and an even better finish to take his tally of goals in Serie A this season to 16. The Argentinean could have had a brace, in fact, as he missed a penalty in the second half.

It was the Rossoblu who were presented with the first opportunity of the match in the second minute as centre-forward M’baye Niang latched onto a loose ball from defender Leonardo Bonucci but curled his shot wide of the goal.

The home side, after their European exertion at Dortmund in midweek, looked a bit tired every now and then and on had their first attempt on 11 minutes through Chilean Arturo Vidal whose ambitious volley went way off target. A few minutes later, they looked to threaten from a set piece as centre-back Giorgio Chiellini headed over the bar.

Meanwhile, Genoa’s Diego Perotti was booked for diving following an incident that saw him appeal for a penalty after having been allegedly fouled by Claudio Marchisio inside the box.

And despite some early failings, the Old Lady took the lead in the 25th minute, that saw Argentinean Carlos Tevez beat a couple of defenders on the right flank before unleashing a fierce drive from a tight angle into the top of the net.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men were pushed on the back foot momentarily and Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner then tried his luck on the half volley, sending it over the cross bar.

However, the Grifone did get a couple of chances before the break. Perotti side footed a weak shot that was comfortably dealt with by Gianlugi Buffon and 22-year-old Maxime Lestienne then tried his luck from over 30 yards.

And right at the stroke of half-time, drama unfolded as Fernando Llorente’s header was saved by Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin and the rebound was sent towards goal by Tevez, only for it to deflect off Andrea Bertolacci’s extending arm and find Chiellini’s feet, who managed to rattle the crossbar.

The second half began with Perin being subbed off early on, on account of the injury he suffered at half-time. Then following some good build-up play, Roberto Pereyra fluffed a left-footed volley towards the stands.

24-year-old Pereyra was yet again involved in the mix of things as he was fouled inside the box by Rossoblu defender Facundo Roncaglia, leading to a penalty at the hour mark. However, substitute goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna stunned the entire Juventus Stadium as he saved the subsequent penalty from Tevez, denying his second goal of the day.

Still wanting that crucial second goal, Tevez played his centre-forward partner Llorente through on goal, but the Spaniard’s effort was blocked by Juraj Kucka. With 15 minutes remaining, Juventus substitute Alessandro Matri got his chance to put the game to bed, but his header was sent straight to goalkeeper Lamanna.

Five minutes later, Bianconeri defender Andrea Barzagli pulled off a brilliant last ditch tackle on 26-year-old Perotti, who was a regular tap-in away from scoring the equalizer following an excellent cross from Roncaglia.

Genoa could not create any more chances after that and the game ended with Juventus finishing off on a high note, dominating possession and looking threatening as ever.

Juventus strengthened their grasp on a fourth straight Serie A title thanks to a 1-0 win over Genoa which confirmed the Bianconeri are also able to juggle their league and European commitments.

Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of the game to secure a 20th win of the season in 28 Serie A fixtures for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Their advantage at the top of the table is now such that they can plan on wrapping the title up even before the semifinal stage of the Champions League, which they will hope to be involved in by beating Monaco in the quarterfinals.

Allegri made just a few changes to the side which had defeated Borussia Dortmund in midweek, giving Simone Padoin and Fernando Llorente a start while taking a closer look at a three-man defence including Andrea Barzagli.

Any thoughts the Bianconeri might be tired or not focused after Wednesday's thrilling win in Germany were soon dismissed as they attacked like in any other game.

They took the lead in the 25th minute when Tevez showed his fine goal past Roman Weidenfeller on Wednesday was no fluke with a similarly stunning strike which hit the underside of the crossbar on its way past Mattia Perin.

The crossbar was struck again on the stroke of half-time with the ball this time rebounding to safety from Giorgio Chiellini's effort after Perin had made a save from Llorente.

Juve had the chance to double their lead on the hour mark when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Facundo Roncaglia on Roberto Pereyra.

Eugenio Lamanna, who had taken the place of the injured Perin only moments earlier, guessed right to deny Tevez, making already his second penalty save in only his third Serie A appearance.

Allegri then started to make changes, giving Llorente, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Arturo Vidal a break without his side showing any sign of weakness.

They had no problems holding on to a win which brings a fourth straight Scudetto that little bit closer to Turin.

The Grifone had only ever won this fixture twice in 1937 and 1991, since that Tomas Skuhravy goal managing just three draws and eight defeats. However, they were the only Serie A side to have beaten Juve this season, a Luca Antonelli goal at the 94th minute securing that October result.

Alvaro Morata, Iago Falque and Tomas Rincon were suspended, joining the injured Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo, Martin Caceres, Paolo De Ceglie, Romulo and Lorenzo Ariaudo.

M’Baye Niang curled wide after two minutes when Leonardo Bonucci gave away possession, while Fernando Llorente’s effort was charged down in the box.

Andrea Bertolacci’s deflected shot turned into an assist for Maxime Lestienne, Gigi Buffon having to rush out and palm the ball off his feet during a period of Genoa pressure.

Carlos Tevez is on stunning form and got his 16th Serie A goal of the season. He gathered outside the box, burst past a defender and smashed an unstoppable strike in off the underside of the bar from a tight angle. The ferocity of the shot made it impossible to reach.

Diego Perotti and Bertolacci failed to trouble Buffon from distance, but Juve almost made it 2-0 before the break. A corner found Llorente’s header, beaten off the line by Mattia Perin, then Tevez’s attempt was charged down and Giorgio Chiellini fired the rebound on to the crossbar.

Perin went off after the restart after suffering from a shoulder injury, making way for Eugenio Lamanna.

Facundo Roncaglia gave away a penalty for a trip on Roberto Pereyra, although the ex-Udinese man left his leg trailing and appeared to look for the contact.

Nonetheless, Lamanna came to the rescue and parried the Tevez penalty to his right. Incredibly, the 25-year-old goalkeeper had also saved a spot-kick from Roma’s Adem Ljajic and this was only his third appearance of the season.

Moments later Juraj Kucka cleared off the line from Llorente, who had shaken off two challenges. Facundo Roncaglia whipped in a cross from the right and Andrea Barzagli was decisive to stop Perotti tapping in from six yards.

Genoa pinned Juve back in the closing stages and Arturo Vidal went off injured. In stoppages Stefano Sturaro almost scored against his old club, but a Pereyra cross was just beyond him in front of the open goal.

Chiellini: 'Tevez is transformed'

Giorgio Chiellini said Carlos Tevez is “transformed on match day” after Juventus saw off Genoa 1-0.

“Our energy was running low after the last two to three weeks of very intense matches,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.

Tevez scored a stunning goal in the first half, then his penalty was parried by Eugenio Lamanna.

“We knew we’d suffer against an intense Genoa side that presses you all over the field, but we didn’t concede much in the end.

“Plus we have players of such quality in attack and Tevez again showed how decisive he is. He has been important since his first day, not just with words, but with his attitude on the pitch.

“On match day he is transformed, working so hard not only going forward, but also helping out at the back.

“Against Palermo and today we saw a Juve side that might not have been sparkling, but was tough and knew how to win.”

Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci had quite a few clashes with Marco Borriello in the second half, their former Juventus teammate now back at Genoa.

“We’re good friends and have known each other since the youth teams, but on the field our physicality is important and so it’s normal we will give each other a good hammering. I’m glad he’s back to playing regularly.”

Juventus defeated Genoa 1-0 at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Serie A.

The hosts took the lead in spectacular fashion through Carlos Tevez, who also had a chance to double the lead from the penalty spot, but was denied by substitute goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna.

 

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon – 6.5 – Faultless - Hardly the easiest first half he’s had this season. Had to be alive to Niang’s early strike and dashed off his line to deny Lestienne. Untested in what was a comfortable second half.

Andrea Barzagli – 6.5 – Calm - Relatively untroubled at the back but performed to his usual high standard, comfortable enough playing the ball back to his goalkeeper. Got rid of Roncaglia’s late cross to deny Perotti the chance to equalise.

Leonardo Bonucci – 6 – Rough - Picked up a booking for a brief altercation with Borriello, but looked confident in performing his duties at the back. Adopted the tough approach taking no prisoners and ensuring Genoa had nothing to go with in attack.

Giorgio Chiellini – 7 – Dominant - Uncompromising in his tackles and looked every bit the leader at the back, he was also a threat from corners and missed a chance to double their lead when his header hit the crossbar.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6.5 – Assured - A real presence for the hosts in his defensive work rate, but also evident in the attacking third. Kept up the pressure on Genoa and ran his heart out for the win. Replaced late on by Pepe.

Arturo Vidal – 6.5 – Unstoppable - Had a chance to test Perin early on, but his shot went high into the stands. Tough in the challenge and added an extra dimension in the attack. Replaced at the end by Sturaro.

Claudio Marchisio – 6 – Average - Looked to be in trouble when the referee blew for his tackle on Perotti in the area, but the Argentinian was shown yellow for simulation. Helped move the ball around but generally had a quiet game.

Roberto Pereyra – 6 – Pacy - Confident first touch and quick in moving the ball forward, was a source of concern with his speed. Won the Bianconeri the penalty when he tripped over Roncaglia’s outstretched leg in the area.

Simone Padoin – 6 – Workhorse - Acted alongside Vidal to make up the engine room of the Juventus midfield, throwing his body into the mix to defend his lines. Full of running and added a great deal to the victory for his work rate.

Fernando Llorente – 6 – Unlucky - Had plenty of joy in the first half in getting past the Genoa defenders, but couldn’t translate his possession in goals. Saw his late header on target clawed out of the air by Perin. Replaced by Matri.

Carlos Tevez – 7.5 – Relentless - Dropped his shoulder to get past De Maio and blasted it past Perin who had no chance for his 16th Serie A goal of the season. Looked imperious going forward despite having his penalty saved by Lamanna.


Substitutes

Simone Pepe – 6 – Bright - Took the place of Lichsteiner as Allegri looked to keep the tempo of the match going with fresh legs. Presented an early opportunity for Matri to score that was not taken.

Alessandro Matri – 6 – Respectful - Came on for Llorente to add a new dimension against the side he represented at the beginning of the season.

Mattia Perin – 6.5 – Blameless - Showed excellent awareness to deny Juventus an easy route to goal, but was unable to do anything about Tevez’s thunderous strike. Made a double save to deny Llorente scoring and then Chiellini on the follow up. Was eventually forced off with an injury.

Facundo Roncaglia – 5.5 – Poor - Conceded the penalty for a trailing leg that caught Pereyra. Provided little else defensively and was restricted to defending for much of the game, managing to provide a telling cross late.

Nicolas Burdisso – 6 – Polarizing - Proved something of a liability in the first half, taking far too much time on the ball. Avoided punishment for man-handling Tevez and generally looked uncomfortable. Looked more confident in the second half, urging calm from his players.

Sebastian De Maio – 5.5 – Slow - Beaten by pace on Tevez’s opener with a desperate attempt at a block all he could manage. Overcame his early misgivings and acted with greater composure.

Edenilson – 6 – Involved - Eager to push forward and provide assistance in attack. Made a vital interception to deny Llorente scoring in the second half. Tackled competently and did his bit in the midfield.

Juraj Kucka – 6 – Engine - Appeared to struggle initially with marking Pereyra, but slowly worked his way into the game and tried desperately to provide some stability in front of the defence.

Andrea Bertolacci – 5.5 – Disappointing - Booked very early in the game for a late sliding tackle on Vidal, then was beaten by Tevez’s drop of the shoulder that lead to the goal. Couldn’t muster much in the second period despite seeing a greater amount of the ball.

Zakarya Bergdich – 5.5 – Quiet - Created early chances and made marauding runs into dangerous areas, but faded from attention and played a minor role in the majority of Genoa’s defending during the match.

Diego Perotti – 6.5 – Dangerous - Booked for simulation after going down in the penalty area. Picked himself up thereafter and looked a real threat with his close control. Bugged the Juventus defenders for the entire match and rarely stepped off the gas.

M’Baye Niang – 5.5 – Uneventful - Had an early chance to test Buffon, but his shot drifted just wide of goal. Faded into the background as he saw less and less of the ball. Had his game ended prematurely after being replaced by Borriello.

Maxime Lestienne – 6 – Decent - Gifted an early opportunity when the ball fell kindly to him in the area, but couldn’t stretch in time to beat Buffon. Sent a teasing cross into the area, but Borriello wasn’t quick enough to react to the opportunity. Replaced by Laxalt after an hour.


Substitutes

Marco Borriello – 5.5 – Wild - Picked up a quick yellow card for an altercation with Bonucci and escaped a second for a barge on Chiellini. Poor performance against his former club.

Eugenio Lamanna – 7 - Ready - Replaced the injured Perin and earned the praise of his fans instantly after saving a Tevez penalty before denying Llorente in front of goal.

Buffon: 'Juve success unthinkable'

Gigi Buffon admits it was “frankly unthinkable” that Juventus would be doing so well this season under Max Allegri.

The captain spoke to Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 victory over Genoa, despite Carlos Tevez seeing a penalty saved.

“Today the biggest effort was a psychological one, as to find more energy and focus to avoid losing concentration at every moment of the game was very difficult after the ‘hangover’ of the Champions League.

“I am glad to see the desire to suffer to the limit is making the difference for this Juventus.”

Juve now have a 17-point lead at the top of the table pending Roma’s trip to Cesena this evening.

“I have always been a dreamer and an optimist, but to be honest I had a few doubts we could win the Scudetto again this season. The statistics were not on our side and Roma were on the ascendant.
“To have such a lead and be in the Champions League quarter-finals at this stage was frankly unthinkable.”

Many Juve fans did not welcome Allegri as the replacement for Antonio Conte, but he has won everyone over.

“The real quality of this group and the club’s DNA is fighting hard. We had lost it for a while, but over the last three and a half years we have reconstructed that mentality and belief.
“As for the Coach, I can only say he has been a very pleasant surprise and he made the most courageous choice a tactician could make.

“To come to Juventus after three historic years, aware he had everything to lose and risk, then get these extraordinary results... you can only tip your hat to him.”

Carlos Tevez Scores but Arturo Vidal Impressive
Yet Again as Juventus Beat Genoa

Following their hugely impressive Champions League outing in midweek, the Bianconeri returned to domestic action on Sunday with a 1-0 victory when they welcomed Genoa to Juventus Stadium. The Turin giants had turned in a remarkable performance against Borussia Dortmund but knew the visitors would present a stiff challenge.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men remain the only side to have beaten Juve in Serie A this term, and Massimiliano Allegri had spoken of the need to concentrate on this game rather than look ahead to their quarter-final clash with AS Monaco next month.

“It’s also going to be tough because they’ve had a week to prepare for it, while we basically only have today,” the coach said at his pre-match press conference, per the club’s official website. “So we'll have to come up with a big performance,” he added, demanding that his players continued their impressive recent form.

Indeed, since AS Roma scored in Rome earlier this month, Juventus had kept three consecutive clean sheets, recording league wins over Palermo and Sassuolo as well as that 3-0 victory at the Westfalenstadion.

Allegri was correct once again as Genoa proved to be a resolute opponent, pressuring the home side in midfield and remaining compact in defence. Luckily for the Italian champions, they can count upon a number of top quality players to pierce such stubborn resistance, and it was no surprise which of them brought the deadlock to an end.

There were just 25 minutes on the clock when a clever pass from Roberto Pereyra sent Carlos Tevez into the box, and the Argentinian striker unleashed a thunderous shot. Mattia Perin stood little chance of keeping it out, with the ball crashing off the crossbar and into the back of the net, handing Juventus a well-deserved opening goal.

Genoa continued to provide stern resistance, but despite their best efforts, the Bianconeri proved to be simply too strong, with Arturo Vidal turning in the latest in a string of impressive displays. Having suffered a serious slump in form following knee surgery and the World Cup, the Chilean is slowly returning to somewhere near his best form.

His effort with and without the ball was impressive on Sunday. Statistics from WhoScored.com show he made two tackles and three interceptions as he continually broke up Genoa’s attacking play. The same source shows that he added much to Juve’s own forward forays, completing 89.7 percent of his passes.

Vidal has weighed in with six goals and two assists this term, and although he failed to get on the scoresheet on Sunday his contribution was no less valuable. His play was in-keeping with what has been a solid if unspectacular campaign in which WhoScored shows he has averaged an impressive three tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game.

A missed penalty from Tevez after a foul on Pereyra saw La Madama fail to double her lead early in the second half, with substitute goalkeeper Eugenio Lamanna making an impressive save from the spot.

Vidal will now head off on international duty with Chile; the South American side are set to face Iran and Brazil in friendly action next week. The pause will also allow Juventus to recover Andrea Pirlo and Stefano Sturaro, the latter came on as a late substitute for Vidal with just three minutes left to play.

His importance to the side cannot be understated, and like the rest of the team he appears to be hitting peak form at just the right time, with Juventus hoping to impress further still in the Champions League. As he has been since arriving in the summer of 2011, Vidal will be key to those hopes and he told Sky Italia he expects a tough clash against the Ligue 1 side.

“No, no they are all difficult games,” the 27-year-old said (h/t Football Italia) and while that may well be true, they are much easier when Arturo Vidal plays at his best.

Allegri: 'Juve haven't won yet'

Max Allegri warned Juventus “haven’t won anything yet” after beating Genoa to go 17 points clear of Roma.

This was their third consecutive 1-0 Serie A victory, a result the Coach had said was his favourite because it didn’t allow his team to relax.

“The lads and club deserve the credit for what they are doing this season,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s an intriguing end to the campaign and we hope to achieve as many objectives as possible. You never know in football.”

Roma visit Cesena this evening and anything less than a victory will see Juve extend their advantage.

“If we are able to get full points in the next two games, then we’d have a pretty strong lead. However, as things stand we haven’t won anything yet and still have to play in the Champions League and Coppa Italia.”

Andrea Barzagli performed a decisive intervention late on against Genoa and has truly found his form after eight months out injured.

“We’ve got an important and extraordinary defender back. With him we can play with three or four at the back, plus can afford to rest someone like Leo Bonucci who has played non-stop.

“We are still in three tournaments, so it’s crucial to have different options and tactical variations at our disposal.”

Gian Piero Gasperini said Genoa put in “the performance we wanted” against Juventus, even if it ended in defeat.

Carlos Tevez got the decisive goal, although Eugenio Lamanna parried a penalty too.

“Undoubtedly it was the performance we wanted. We tried to repeat the other game we won against them, pressing them high up the field,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia after a 1-0 result in Turin.

“In attack we weren’t able to convert our chances, but then it’s not easy to break through the Juventus defence.

“In the first half I remember we had a great move with Perotti, but would lose intensity when we got to the edge of the box.

“We had a stronger central reference point in Borriello, but against such a strong defence it is tough. This performance should still boost our confidence, as for long periods we played on a par with Juventus and pinned them back into their own half.

“It was important for us to maintain possession and the initiative, as attack is the best form of defence. Once the ball reaches Tevez’s feet, it becomes difficult!”

Marco Borriello replaced M’Baye Niang at half-time, creating a more solid front line.

“The performance was certainly good, above all in defence and midfield. I don’t think Niang was in his usual form today, so I introduced Borriello, but it had been an option to play them together.”

Mattia Perin went off with a shoulder injury and will be forced to pull out of international duty for Italy’s games against Bulgaria and England.

There are a few general notes about today’s game. First, Max Allegri’s Juventus really love a 1-0 victory. Today’s game was the third 1-0 victory in a row in Serie A. Secondly, the 1-0 loss to Genoa from October has now been avenged. Finally, Juventus sit atop the Serie A table with a 17 point lead and a game in hand, so the Scudetto race is finished most likely.

It didn’t take that long for Juventus to put this one away. Fernando Llorente had an effort on goal in the first ten minutes that wasn’t very harmful, and Arturo Vidal skied an effort from just outside of the box, but there’s a reason that Juventus pays Carlos Tevez. Tevez, in the 24th minute, destroyed Genoa’s defense.

Roberto Pereyra fed him a pass, and Tevez was with the ball outside the right side of Genoa’s 18 yard box. Tevez broke past two Genoa defenders, and then improbably scored from an incredibly tight angle. He’s scored a few crazy goals lately, so let’s just enjoy Tevez being in top form at such a critical time of the year.

Minutes later Stephan Lichtsteiner attempted to score from a similar spot, but his effort was too high. Juve were very much in control of the game, and the first goal only made that official. Giorgio Chiellini nearly doubled the scoreline going into half time, when he had a point blank shot on goal off of a corner kick. However, his effort bounced off the post.

Genoa goal keeper Mattia Perin, who is sometimes hyped as a potential heir to Gianluigi Buffon – at least in terms of being Italian and a goal keeper – was injured 50 minutes in and had to come off. Surprisingly, the change in goal keepers did not lead to more Juve goals.

The fact that Carlos Tevez missed a penalty only made it more puzzling. Roberto Pereyra was fouled in the box by Facundo Roncaglia and Juve were awarded a penalty. Obviously, Tevez is going to take it. Not obvious was that his right sided shot would be saved. Generally goalkeepers do not save his shots.

Regardless, the lone Tevez goal was enough to get Juventus another win. Now there is the international break, so let’s just hope our players return healthy. We will see Juventus again in April.

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez spoke of the importance of the Bianconeri’s 1-0 win over Genoa on Sunday afternoon, as well as reiterating his faith in struggling teammate Fernando Llorente.

The Bianconeri temporarily moved 17 points clear of Roma at the top of the table thanks to a memorable solo goal from the Argentinian, who stormed past three players before finishing into the top of the net.

“The important thing is that the we won a tough game,” Tevez told Mediaset after the match.

“I’m glad about my goal, but I’m very happy for my team.

“After playing such a hard game on Wednesday it was never going to be easy, especially from a mental standpoint.

Tevez then spoke of his support of teammate Llorente, stating that the entire team must do their best in order to help the misfiring Spaniard.

“We have to help him, it’s not easy when there is no confidence. We must do the simple things to help him as we are teammates.

Despite his emphasis on the recent run of hard games, the attacker showed no signs on wanting to ease up in any competition.

“Everyone thinks we are already in the semi-finals of the Champions League, but that’s not true because Monaco is a very strong opponent.

“I would have actually preferred to play Barcelona or Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.”

Massimiliano Allegri hailed Carlos Tevez's "extraordinary" goal following Juventus' 1-0 win over Genoa.

The striker scored twice in the 3-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday and followed that up with another goalscoring display on Sunday.

Tevez scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute with a fine solo effort and saw a second half penalty saved, but Allegri was quick to praise his efforts after the game.

"He scored an extraordinary goal, suited to his remarkable season," the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

"He has great technique, I leave him free to move around a bit more and I think that’s important for him.

"You can tell a champion by the way he moves and shakes off the marking, even without having to run that much.

The result leaves Juve 17 points clear at the top of Serie A, while they remain in the running for both the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, and Allegri admitted success on all three fronts is not an impossibility.

Juventus beat Genoa 1-0 on Sunday thanks to the individual power of Carlos Tevez.

A divine Tevez goal secured the win for Juventus but while the team's struggles were evident, so was their maturity and eagerness to get a result.

Genoa are one of the few sides in Serie A that give their opponent an education -- it's both exhausting and difficult to play a side that always boasts stamina and organised tactics. Pressing high up the pitch, they offer their opponent no respite. They are capable in possession, play with width and press until they have their ball at their feet.

Playing a match against Gian Piero Gasperini's men is an opportunity; a chance to grow and mature. Opponents, such as the Bianconeri on Sunday, learn how to manage their energy, press and defend as a unit. The league hasn't always offered the Old Lady the type of challenges they need to keep learning but they can always rely on the Rossoblu for real competition.

Juventus attempted to cope with Genoa's heavy pressing by executing long passes that bypassed the midfield. Boasting greater patience and intelligence on the ball than previous years, they handled the pressure better. That is in small part thanks to the heroics of Tevez.

A player who sacrificed his opportunity for a hat-trick in the Champions League so he can lift the spirits of his co-striker Alvaro Morata by delivering a delicious assist against Borussia Dortmund, Tevez is with Juve to win trophies. Wearing the famed No.10, the Argentine has made it his duty to act as leader of a side that have previously surrendered to psychological pressure.

He not only roams around the final third looking for openings but he tracks back to tackle, win back possession and launch the ball forward.

A warrior with the sole desire to win as a team, he does everything required to make his teammates feel included. Players cannot play with lethargy when they see this man ahead of them giving every inch for the sake of the team. He's inspirational and his technique is the icing on the cake. A stunning forward with skills and power, he scored a superb goal to highlight his brilliance and indomitable spirit.

Players like Tevez were made for coach Massimiliano Allegri. While previous coach Antonio Conte fed the team with instructions and planned for every eventuality, Allegri relies on his players to take responsibility, forcing them to dig deep and exploit the opportunity given to them to show their intelligence and technique.

With a certain freedom afforded to them, Allegri is a coach for the intelligent and the mentally prepared. By allowing his players such as Claudio Marchisio and Tevez freedom, he can watch them flourish and develop into the men they want to be while other tacticians may shackle their spirit with rigid rules.

Inspired by Carlo Ancelotti, the two tacticians need driven professionals if they are to succeed at the helm of a club. Without leadership in the squad, the ship begins to sink.

As the game against Genoa wore on, the Bianconeri grew weary and their tempo slowed. Sadly for Genoa, all their forays forward resulted in little due to poor choices. With Andrea Barzagli back and ready to perform, it is practically impossible to overcome his alert style of defending, making Genoa's task that bit harder.

It's impressive to see how well Juventus have coped with absences and the strain of competing on all fronts. While Allegri continues to insist his team have not won anything yet for fear that his side lose any momentum, he has Tevez alongside him spurring others on.

Neither man wants the players to surrender to arrogance and feel their objectives have already been achieved.

Allegri continues to insist his side haven't won anything despite the 17-point gap between them and second-placed Roma. If his side drop their intensity and willingness to fight for one moment then their weaknesses will be exposed and duly exploited.

The team still has a duty to keep fighting and with Tevez leading them, that is exactly what will happen.

Another day, another win for Juventus. The champions extended the lead at the top of the Serie A table to 17 points for a few hours, as Roma also won their game against Cesena. But the way Max Allegri — with some help from the players now and then — manages to drive Juventus forward from a great result to another, keeping the whole squad happy and in perfect harmony, is nothing short of extraordinary.

And, at the end of the day, a 14-point lead at the top of Serie A is not too shabby, either.

Besides the nice results that keep on coming, the great mood of everyone in the team is probably the best thing happening in Turin and Allegri deserves full credit for that. Even Fernando Llorente seemed to enjoy his time on the pitch more, as he and Simone Padoin started to give Alvaro Morata and Patrice Evra a rest.

Simone Pepe and Alessandro Matri, whom are known for their great relationship with core players of the squad such as Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini or Leonardo Bonucci, both received playing time as well. Having the support of the players is key in managerial success and with a team so united, making it all the way in the Champions League is becoming more feasible with every passing day.

Genoa was a tougher nut to crack than it might have appeared at the first glance, even with the result of the last meeting from October in mind, when Il Grifone won the three points after Luca Antonini scored a 94th minute winner — it was a Matri assist, if anyone was wondering.

When a side visits Juventus Stadium on a nice Sunday afternoon and, on paper, starts with at least a huge handicap compared to the hosts, the story is often the same one – they sit back, as close as possible to their own box, enjoying Juventus’ continuous flow of attacks for 90 minutes and, if possible, they would like to get home with only two points dropped.

But it was a different story — more so in the first half — with this Genoa side who gave Juventus a good run for their money. Gian Piero Gasperini decided he would not stick with the pattern and had his players applying pressure on Juventus’ backline at every possible moment. Even after Carlos This vez scored that beauty of a goal, Genoa remained unfazed and played their game.

The result? A highly entertaining first half that was later marred by a lackluster second part.


MATCH SUMMARY

A very lively start to the match saw Llorente getting in a good position outside Genoa’s box but the Spaniard couldn’t find a teammate with his pass after a good run forward from Arturo Vidal. Just a moment after that, Bonucci played a horrendous ball from defence straight to M’Baye Niang whose shot from 20 yards out went only inches wide of Buffon’s post.

Juventus kept pressing high and were very energetic every time they had the ball in the final third. Ten minutes in, Llorente received a brilliant ball and managed a fabulous turn to get away from his man but after advancing in the opposite box with the ball at his feet, Facundo Roncaglia’s sliding tackle blocked the Spaniard’s shot.

Chiellini found himself at the receiving end of a good delivery from Claudio Marchisio in the 15th minute but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

It was then Genoa’s turn to apply pressure on Juventus’ defence as three minutes later, Buffon spilled a ball that came to him after a deflected shot from Andrea Bertolacci but the danger was cleared away by Bonucci. Moments later, Roncaglia also tried his luck from distance, although his shot went way off target.

After soaking up the pressure, Juventus found the breakthrough in the 25th minute. Tévez — who else? — opened the scoring with a fantastic strike from a tight angle topping up an even better solo effort. Genoa poorly tried to clear a ball that reached Roberto Pereyra and the Argentine found his compatriot just outside the box. Tévez unleashed his dazzling dribbling skills, easily beating two opponents in his way through and then sent a fierce shot that went in off the crossbar, giving no chance to goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

Juventus didn’t step back and had another chance in the 27th minute through Stephan Lichsteiner, whose left footed shot went over the crossbar. After the Swiss’ chance, however, the game lost a bit from its intensity.

Perotti missed a half-decent chance for Genoa in the 44th minute when he found a bit of space at the edge of the box and tried to place a shot near the post, but Buffon made a comfortable save.

The first half ended with a massive let-off for Genoa. Marchisio delivered another good cross from a corner kick and Llorente’s header was pushed wide by Perrin but straight in the path of Tévez, whose shot was then blocked on the line by Bertolacci . Chiellini got to the rebound inside the 6-yard-box but his shot bounced off the crossbar and referee Marco Di Bello put an end to the half.

Gasperini made a substitution at the break as former Juventus — and Roma, Milan and other seven clubs — player Marco Borrielo replaced Niang.

And Borrielo quickly got involved in the game or better said, in a row with Bonucci. The former teammates wrestled each other outside Juventus’ box, forcing Di Bello to book both players.

Perin, who already needed the intervention of the medical team right before the break, tried to continue the game in the second half but eventually had to come off in the 52nd minute, forcing Gasperini into making his second substitution. Eugenio Lamanna took his place between Genoa’s posts.

The first minutes of the second half had nothing from the good rhythm of the first – too many interruptions with a few players spending more time down on the pitch than playing football.

Juventus missed a huge chance to double their lead just after the hour mark. Referee Di Bello pointed to the spot in the 62nd minute after Roncaglia made a clumsy challenge on Pereyra inside Genoa’s box, although Pereyra was looking for the contact.

Tévez — and not Vidal — stepped up to take the penalty but he missed it as substitute goalkeeper Lamanna dived to his right to pull out a superb, essential save — his first of the match.

At the very next action, Juvenuts missed another good opportunity when Tévez played a through ball for Llorente in a great position inside the area. The Spaniard faked his initial shot, beating a defender, but the next attempt was blocked and the ball cleared away.

Allegri made a double substitution in the 72nd minute – Pepe and Matri replaced Lichtsteiner and Llorente.

Three minutes later Matri won a free-kick on the left side. Pepe was the player to take it and sent a good cross in for the same Italian striker, but his header was an easy save for Lamanna.

In the 79th minute, Barzagli received a round of applause from the whole stadium after a fantastic piece of defending to deny Perotti a chance to score, clearing the ball behind for a corner with a neat tackle.

The game saw a quiet final with the hosts controlling possession and keeping Genoa away from Buffon’s goal. A last chance for Juventus came in the second minute of injury time when Pepe found lots of space on the right side but his cross had a bit too much behind it and Stefano Sturaro, who replaced Vidal earlier, couldn’t reach the ball.

It was the last action of the game, as Di Bello blew the full-time whistle seconds later.

Buffon: 6 Was called into action a few times in the match, but it wasn’t too much of a challenge for the captain, who was as confident as usual

Barzagli: 6.5 After a shaky start with some problems containing Niang, the experienced defender got back to his usual great level – The Wall.

Bonucci: 6 Often attempted the direct ball for the front players but made several poor passes. A bit uncomfortable at the back, also foolishly receiving a yellow.

Chiellini: 6.5 Made a great sliding tackle that stopped a dangerous counter early on. Missed a huge chance before the break but had a steady defensive performance

Lichtsteiner: 6.5 Good contribution in attack — very energetic and confident, and also decent when defending. It seems like the poor form is behind him.

Pereyra: 6 A bit too hasty at times, losing the ball after an unnecessary take on attempt, but good overall. Credit for winning the penalty, but it was a bit forced

Marchisio: 6.5 Great passing and deliveries throughout, although he made that risky challenge on Perotti inside the box. Industrious performance from Il Principino

Vidal: 6 Decent ball distribution but again, not at his best level. Was caught on the ball a few times in the centre of midfield.

Padoin: 5.5 Made an important clearance inside 20 minutes, but was quiet for the rest of the game. No attacking contribution from him

Allegri: 6.5 Continued with the same formation Juventus finished the great performance at Dortmund, shuffling the starting XI a bit, starting Llorente and Padoin. Despite the ambitious first half played by Genoa, Allegri seemed to have everything under control and after Tévez scored, the result was easily defended
