TEAM RATINGS

25frnf7.jpg

Nov 22, 2014

Lazio

22 F. Marchetti - Made a couple of very smart reflex stops to ensure that the scoreline stayed at a respectable level.

8 D. Basta - Always keen to break forward and support the attack, but struggled with the defensive side of things.

3 S. de Vrij - Threw himself into some great sliding tackles to stop a breaking Tevez in his tracks.

27 L. Cana - Made one good block but was for the most part well covered by his partner De Vrij.

5 E. Braafheid - Combative and physical when off the ball, the Dutchman didn't permit Lichtsteiner to overlap too often.

16 M. Parolo - Worked hard to press and harry but did little in terms of quality when actually on the ball.

20 L. Biglia - Broke up play and wasn't afraid to get stuck in. Whipped in a couple of reasonable set pieces.

19 S. Lulić - Hard-working and aggressive in the centre of midfield, the Bosnia international led by example and pressed well.

87 A. Candreva - The main driving force behind Lazio's attacks. The Italy international stung Buffon's palms with a number of efforts.

11 M. Klose - Looked bright and opportunistic early on, but quickly faded from the game and became anonymous.

14 B. Keita - The young winger had a fairly quiet game and was outmuscled for the most part.

Substitutes

7 Felipe Anderson
- Provided plenty of intensity and driving runs from deep areas in midfield.

9 F. Đorđević - Tried to battle as a lone striker, but didn't have a real effect on the game.

Juventus

1 G. Buffon - Made a couple of good saves in the second half, after being called into action sparingly before the interval.

26 S. Lichtsteiner - Worked incredibly hard to track back but also to support the attack when required. A more withdrawn role than usual, but was solid.

19 L. Bonucci - Won his headers and imposed himself physically throughout the contest.

3 G. Chiellini - The Italy international was strong at the heart of the Juve defence, hacking away clearances and dealing with corner deliveries well.

20 S. Padoin - Battled well and remained attentive to his defensive duties, but picked up a late red card for two yellow card offenses.

21 A. Pirlo - Economical in possession but wasn't afraid to try incisive passes to get the visitors' attacks on the move.

8 C. Marchisio - Calm on the ball and worked hard off of it. Quickly becoming a real unsung hero in the Juve midfield.

6 PAUL POGBA - Netted two goals which helped the Bianconeri to victory, as well as displaying constant creativity and inspiration.

37 R. Pereyra - A bright and creative influence in the final third, laying passes on for teammates with clever balls and flicks.

10 C. Tévez - A thorn in Lazio's side all evening, with his determination and driving runs leading to plenty of opportunities. Converted with a lovely finish.

14 Llorente - Battled aerially and was a clear focal point for Allegri's men, giving them a secondary plan of attack if required.

Substitutes

38 F. Mattiello
- Worked hard in midfield and was unfortunate to see a half volley saved brilliantly by Marchetti.

9 Álvaro Morata - A fairly quiet performance from the Spain international, who didn't carve out any chances for himself.

Allegri: Pogba can become
world's strongest midfielder

The Juventus boss feels the France star delivered his finest performance
of the season as he scored twice in a convincing 3-0 win over Lazio.

Nov 23, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri hailed Paul Pogba 's performance after the midfielder netted twice in Juventus ' 3-0 win at Lazio on Saturday.

The France international produced two cool finishes, either side of a Carlos Tevez strike, as the reigning Serie A champions cruised to victory in Rome.

The result means Juve have now gone 20 league matches against Lazio without defeat, while it also restored their three-point lead at the top of the table after Roma had momentarily moved level with a 2-1 win at Atalanta earlier in the day.

Juve coach Allegri was full of praise for Pogba after the game and believes the 21-year-old could go on to become one of the greatest players in the world.

"Pogba had a great game, but he has the quality to do even better and become the strongest midfielder in the world," he told Sky Sport Italia.

"He moved with the right tempo in attack and defence. It was his best performance of the season so far.

"The team did well, defended when necessary and I think we played fairly well with some good passing moves.

"We struggled a little in the first half and misplaced a few too many passes, but sorted that out.

"The lads worked hard and [Federico] Mattiello nearly scored when coming off the bench. It was important to get a win in such a difficult arena against a tough Lazio side, especially after Roma had won earlier."

Allegri welcomed influential midfielder Andrea Pirlo back into the side after the 35-year-old had missed the 7-0 thrashing of Parma last time out and was pleased to have the experienced playmaker back among the ranks.

"Andrea Pirlo hadn't trained with the team for 10 days, but he had a great game and when we have an extra man between midfield and defence it's normal he has more space and protection to pass the ball," he said.

"The team works together and the more the forwards do, the easier it is for the defenders. You have to keep the ball as far away from your own box as possible and you do that by attacking."

Juventus 3-0 Lazio: Paul Pogba and
Carlos Tévez lead Juventus to victory

Coming to the Stadio Olimpico with a long injury list and just back from the international break, Lazio could have proved

a stern test for Juventus. Strikes from Carlos Tévez and a Paul Pogba brace ensured a comfortable win for the Old Lady.

35j9x7p.jpg

Nov 23, 2014

The first match after an international break is often tricky for big teams, with half of their squads shipping off around the world while a smaller team can count on all but two or three players having time to heal up and prepare. Combined with a Juventus injury list that includes two left (wing)backs and three central defenders, and looking ahead to a crucial Champions League game midweek, facing a tricky team like Lazio away could have easily meant dropped points for Juventus.

Lazio have been something of a revelation this year, with Stefano Pioli guiding a reinforced squad towards the European places. On Saturday evening the Biancocelesti came out of the blocks with the intention of keeping the ball and putting pressure on Juventus in midfield, but as the game wore Juventus' talent made the difference.

It was a resilient performance from Juventus, who comfortably withstood early Lazio pressure until the 24th minute when Paul Pogba grabbed the first goal of the game. The wind seemed to leave Lazio's sails when they conceded, coming as it did off the counter following a Lazio free kick. Two second-half goals wrapped up the points for Juventus, and the game finished with the Old Lady taking her foot off the gas with more than one eye on Malmö.

Massimiliano Allegri's new 4-3-1-2 formation continues it's winning start, with the Turin side now recording three wins since changing formations. Roberto Pereyra and Carlos Tévez were again fundamental in transitioning from defense to attack, with the Argentines always ready to pick up the ball and run at defenders.

And then there is Paul Pogba. What else is there to say about the young Frenchman? At times it seems like every game he's getting better, polishing his decision making and becoming more integral to his side's play. Today he scored two goals and nearly added a fantastic third, dominated the 1-on-1 battles with the ball at his feet, and was constantly running beyond his strikers.

It was very much a case of job well done for Juventus in Rome, starting a critical set of games on the right foot. All departments of the team functioned well, and the only major worry looking ahead is the left back situation, with Padoin now suspended after picking up a red card. But that won't keep him out of Wednesday's match, which now looms massively on the horizon.

MATCH SUMMARY

Lazio started on the front foot, passing patiently amongst themselves but rarely troubling the Juventus back line. There were early signs that the home side would struggle to keep Juventus contained on the break, with Roberto Pereyra twice brought down as he threatened to race away on the counter. Andrea Pirlo again struggled to impose himself on the match early on, with one poor giveaway nearly putting Lazio in until Leonardo Bonucci was able to clean up.

Candreva was Lazio's most consistent threat, usually stationed on the right of a front three and often enjoying the 1-on-1 matchup with Padoin. The Lazio fullbacks were fairly aggressive in their movement to support the wide forwards but this aggressive positioning left them vulnerable, with Marchisio and the fullbacks quick to flick balls over the initial pressure and start dangerous counters.

It was a move just like this that secured the first goal of the game. A Lazio free kick was hit into the box, where it was cleared to Simone Padoin. The utility man found an excellent ball down the flank to set Tévez free, who in turn cut inside to put the ball on a plate for Pogba.

Lazio looked a bit stunned at how easily they were being cut apart on the counter, and backed off somewhat after conceding. Pogba nearly grabbed a second with a spectacular curling effort off the woodwork following good work from Marchisio who intercepted the ball high up the pitch.

Candreva continued as Lazio's best attacking outlet, firing in crosses and earning Padoin's first yellow for handball as the defender struggled to close him down. The Juventus defense generally handled the aerial threat well, however in the 39th minute Keita Baldé was able to get between Lichtsteiner and Bonucci but fired high under pressure.

The second half continued to be fairly even, with Lazio trying to get back into the game but struggling to get through a strong Juventus midfield and defense. Juventus was a constant threat when there was space to attack, and in the 55th minute Carlos Tévez grabbed the second goal of the night. In a move similar to the first goal, Lichtsteiner played a ball up the flank that cut out the Lazio fullback and put Marchisio through. The Italian midfielder knocked the ball past Lorik Cana and cut it back for Tévez who finished clinically at the near post.

The 2-0 signaled changes for Lazio, as Felipe Anderson and Filip Đorđević came on for Keita Balde and the ineffective Miroslav Klose. Candreva continued to test the Juventus defense, with a long-range effort well saved by Buffon. Soon after it was time for a Juventus change, with Álvaro Morata coming on for Fernando Llorente. Neither Spanish striker would take much to remember from the game, but soon after Morata's introduction Pogba would grab his second, Juventus' third.

Pirlo was given acres of space as Lazio recovered from another Juventus counter, and the veteran fired the ball into Pereyra who elegantly touched the ball through for Pogba. Through on goal the 21-year old made no mistake, feinting a right-footed shot before calmly slotting home with his left.

Lazio continued to attack, with substitute Felipe Anderson threatening down Juventus' right side and luring Leonardo Bonucci into a yellow card. Soon the bad news of the night came for Juventus, as Padoin was again caught 1-on-1 against Candreva. With Pogba far ahead of the play, the ex-Juve winger knocked the ball past Padoin and drew the foul, resulting in a second yellow and sending-off. Federico Mattiello was brought on to fill the gap, with Roberto Pereyra making way.

Juventus continued to create chances, with Federico Mattiello nearly getting his first Serie A goal when put through by Pogba only to see Marchetti save. In the last 10 minutes Juventus was happy to see out the result, while Lazio created a couple of chances either through recovering the ball high up the field or via Candreva's shooting from distance.

A 3-0 scoreline is a fair reflection on Juventus' performance, which controlled the match despite creating fewer shots and often leaving Lazio time to circulate the ball. The result always seemed in control, and with a vital Champions League trip coming up Allegri and the squad will be happy to get out of Rome with the three points. Looking ahead the defensive worries continue, with Simone Padoin sent off, but with no further injuries and a clean sheet Juventus can count this as a job well done.

LE PAGELLE

Buffon: 6 The veteran had a few saves to make, with Antonio Candreva happy to shoot from any distance. Left a couple of dangerous rebounds, and his distribution was erratic at times, but 0 goals conceded tells the story.

Lichtsteiner: 6.5 The right-back delivered his standard performance, up and down the flank and looking to combine with those around him. Could have done better when he got into attacking positions, and was caught out by Keita's run in the first half.

Bonucci: 6.5 Generally dominant when called on in the air, Bonucci was also slightly at fault for Keita's chance but otherwise was rarely troubled.

Chiellini: 7 A classic Chiellini performance, with the hardman keeping Miro Klose well under wraps. Winning everything in the air and ready to sweep up for those around him, a leader's performance from the center back.

Padoin: 5 Contributed to the first goal, but was often isolated against Candreva in a battle he was never likely to win. Picked up two yellow cards stopping dangerous passages of play.

Pirlo: 5.5 Another bland performance from Pirlo, who despite having a role in the third goal is far from his best form. Hopefully he can contribute more in the matches to come, before awkward questions start coming up.

Marchisio: 6 Another all-action performance from the man who has been one of Juve's best performers this season. Always eager to help out his defense and ready start the counter.

Pogba: 7.5 A fantastic performance from the Frenchman in attack, bagging two goals and nearly a classy hat trick. Left something to be desired on the back foot however, as he frequently left Padoin alone.

Pereyra: 6.5 The Argentine midfielder continued his great start to life in black-and-white, full of pace and tricks in attack and always willing to put in a shift. Played a wonderful flick to put Pogba through for the third.

Llorente: 5.5 The big Spaniard played a role up top, but was unable to contribute much other than a few knock-downs. Well-handled by the Lazio defense, and without much aerial service, Llorente will have better days.

Tévez: 7.5 Another great day in the saddle for El Apache. Tévez was always available for his midfielders, and constantly threatening the Lazio backline, and well worth his goal and assist.

Substitutes:

Vidal: 5.5
Brought on for Pirlo to shore up the midfield after the sending off, Vidal gave his typical box-to-box performance.

Morata: 5.5 Brought on for Llorente the younger Spaniard found it similarly difficult, with nothing quite coming off tonight.

Mattiello: 5.5 Another few minutes at left back for the youngster, who had a good chance to open his Serie A account but saw a powerful shot saved by Marchetti.

Coach:

Allegri: 6.5 With a long injury list, the international break, and the transition from 3-5-2 to 4-3-1-2, there would have been plenty of reasons for Juventus to struggle in this game. But Allegri's changes have worked, bringing a new spark to the attack without harming the defense. With Paul Pogba continuing his explosive growth, it will be a confident side on the plane to Sweden.

Tevez: I'm in the form of my life

The Argentina star, who was recently recalled to the national side on the back of his
performances at club level, revealed his delight after scoring his 11th goal of the season.

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez says he is in "the best form of his career" after netting his 11th goal of the season against Lazio on Saturday.

The Serie A leaders beat the Biancocelesti 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico with Tevez's second-half strike sandwiched between a brace from Paul Pogba.

The 30-year-old's strike moved him to the top of Italy's goalscoring charts and he admitted after the game that he couldn't be happier.

The former Manchester United and Manchester City player told Sky Sport Italia: “I am at a great club, I am happy playing my football and I am giving my all on the field. I do agree, this is the best form of my career.”

Tevez recently ended his three-year exile from the Argentina team as was delighted that Juve avoided any repeat of the slip that followed the last international break, when they drew at Sassuolo.

“I expected this performance, although it was the first game after the international break and we couldn’t afford to get this wrong after last time,” he said.

With Juve three points clear in Serie A, their attention now turns to the Champions League, where their progress to the knockout stages is far from certain.

"First we need to play Malmo, then we’ll see where we are," Tevez said.

"We have to play the same way we did against Parma and Lazio, as with that level of performance it’s tough for us to lose.”

Pogba: 'I want long Juve career'

2poy3p1.jpg

Nov 23, 2014

Paul Pogba shrugged off Real Madrid transfer speculation to insist “I am happy at Juventus and hope to stay for a long time.”

The 21-year-old French midfielder bagged a brace in last night’s 3-0 victory away to Lazio, which restored Juve’s three-point lead at the top of the table.

“This was my best game of the season and I hope to continue like this,” he told reporters after the game.

“I just want to learn and improve so that I can become the best one day.”

Pogba has been repeatedly linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and even a return to Manchester United.

“Real Madrid are a great club, but I am very happy at Juve and want to continue these performances. I hope to stay here for a long time. It’s flattering to hear so much transfer speculation, but I play for Juve and I am happy to wear the Bianconeri jersey.

“Why did Manchester United let me go? You’d have to ask them. I was a free agent and I chose to come here, now I am happy.

“Everyone in the locker room treats me like a little brother and I kid around with everyone. Gigi Buffon told me something before kick-off that I cannot repeat in front of the cameras!”

The attention now turns to Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Malmoe.

“We have a great team and can go far in this competition. We must remain concentrated and continue to work the way we did against Lazio.”

Lazio vs. Juventus: Winners
and Losers from Serie A Game

2vxhcae.jpg

Nov 23, 2014

When it comes to a club’s view of breaks for international football, timing is everything. Having been beaten by an otherwise struggling Empoli, Lazio would have appreciated the most recent pause to domestic action.

The two-week wait for their next match allowed coach Stefano Pioli to rally his troops and prepare thoroughly for their next league fixture. Clashes with Juventus have not been favourable for the Biancocelesti in recent times, their last victory coming in December 2003.

For their part, Massimiliano Allegri’s dominant Bianconeri could be forgiven for cursing the fortnight they have had to endure. Having comprehensively dispatched Parma in their last game—reviewed here—before the break, Juventus may have feared a loss of momentum as their players travelled to represent their national teams.

However, the reigning Serie A champions have been fortunate to recover a number of injured players during that period, with Andrea Pirlo among those returning to the lineup on Saturday. They proved simply too good for Lazio, running out 3-0 winners despite a harsh red card for Simone Padoin.

Over the following pages is a look at the winners and losers from this encounter, taking a closer look at the best and worst performances at the Stadio Olimpico.

Winner: Paul Pogba (Juventus)

Having recently signed a new contract with Juventus, Paul Pogba once again served up a reminder of his phenomenal talent. The midfielder turned in the latest in a string of dominant displays in what Allegri told Sky Italia was "his best match of the season," (h/t Gianluca Di Marzio).

The 21-year-old netted twice against Lazio, each showcasing a different aspect of his talent. Having scored first following a lung-bursting box-to-box run, he calmly slotted away the second with a deft finish.

Winner: Carlos Tevez (Juventus)

Arguably the peninsula's most in-form player, Carlos Tevez registered a goal and an assist to see off Lazio. The Argentinean striker set up Pogba's opening goal with a wonderful pass, switching play from left to right at the perfect moment.

Shortly after full time, Tevez discussed his recent performances and just how well he is playing for the Bianconeri. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia he said (h/t Football Italia):

"I am at a great club, I am happy playing my football and I am giving my all on the field. I do agree, this is the best form of my career."

Winner: Roberto Pereyra (Juventus)

While the first two men will rightly steal the headlines, Roberto Pereyra was equally essential to Juve's victory. The versatile Argentinean provided a vital link between midfield and attack, laying on Pogba's second goal with a neat assist.

Stats site WhoScored.com shows he made two tackles and one interception, helping to protect the new-look back four.

Winner: Federico Mattiello (Juventus)

Having made his debut in the 7-0 victory over Parma, Federico Mattiello made his second Juventus appearance on Saturday evening. Brought on following Simone Padoin's dismissal, the youngster helped secure victory with a solid display.

His introduction at such a delicate stage of the match was also a huge vote of confidence from Allegri. Mattiello almost added his name to the scoresheet, forcing a good save from Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.

Loser: Lorik Cana (Lazio)

While the result of the match was testament to Juve's all-round quality, Lorik Cana hardly helped the Lazio cause. Directly at fault for the counter-attack which led to the game's second goal, the 31-year-old appeared to struggle throughout the 90 minutes.

Pogba's performance has Juve
purring as Old Lady batter Lazio

w9zpet.jpg

Nov 23, 2014

They were expected to suffer, but Juventus comprehensively defeated Lazio 3-0 on Saturday night to send a clear message to rivals Roma that the champions remain the best team in Italy.

Under Antonio Conte, we witnessed the emergence of a professional and determined Juve side who were both cynical and professional. Now under the tutelage of Massimiliano Allegri, we are witnessing an evolving side that is simply breathtaking to watch when in full flow. Impeccably intelligent, Juventus are not only winning -- they are doing so with a degree of elegance rarely seen in the last few years.

The 4-3-2-1 formation perfectly makes use of all the technique the Bianconeri boast within their ranks. Never have we seen a more perfect performance from Paul Pogba. Performing the complicated with complete ease, there really isn't anything the Frenchman can't do. It's remarkable how such a young player can perform at such high levels and do so with character that would embarrass veterans of the game.

Speaking of veterans, Andrea Pirlo is back to his best. While we worried his tenuous relationship with Allegri would come to haunt the club, the playmaker reminded all the critics before him that he is first and foremost a professional and currently playing with a side that enjoys nothing more than the mastery of his control.

This blog may seem to be more of an ode to a football club than an analytical piece on a game, but rarely have we seen such elegant brilliance from a side usually renowned for dynamic intensity.

After Pogba scored Juve's first, a stunningly simply strike after Carlos Tevez demonstrated his strength and dribbling ability to run at goal before delivering the perfect pass, Lazio's heads fell. For a good 15 minutes, the Old Lady showed created numerous chances that demonstrated their intelligence.

Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has attempted to address the psychological issues within this Biancocelesti side. Intelligent and capable, they are susceptible to lapses in concentration and are known for performing in fits and spurts. When they switch off, albeit momentarily, quality opponents like Juventus will take advantage of their poor positioning.

After committing the errors that led to them conceding their first goal, Lazio simply broke and gave up. The Bianconeri were quicker in their reactions, more determined in their attempts to grab possession and fought intensely to control proceedings. Considering the fragility of their backline, Lazio had to know that they would concede at some point, but the will to keep fighting must exist. Pioli must better address this psychological issue and ensure his side show courage and desire to win regardless of how difficult the task at hand.

Allegri deserves praise for his excellent team selection and the strategy deployed. Rather than worry about the strength of Lazio's midfield, he opted for a courageous approach and exploited the strength of his midfielders to create a dangerously attacking side. With Roberto Pereyra working between the lines, his speed and positioning created havoc for the home defence who were simply unable to cope with so many bodies. Meanwhile, Claudio Marchisio demonstrated intelligence and power to offer his side balance, not to mention the exquisite assist that led to Juve's second goal.

"Il Principino" latched on to a pass and ran with speed, going past his marker while looking up, eyeing the perfect recipient for his ball. Squaring for Tevez, the Argentine dispatched a devastating strike to make it 2-0.

The third arrived only 10 minutes later when Pereyra acted quickly between the lines to release Pogba and ensure Juve's third. Lazio's slow reaction and unwillingness to neutralise the strength of Juve's midfielders through the middle made it all seem rather easy.

However, only a few minutes later, the Old Lady went down to 10 men; Simone Padoin had committed another foul to receive a second yellow. It was perhaps a harsh decision but Allegri's men -- who some accuse of not being as intense -- showed great maturity to continue when forced to play with a man down.

The Juve coach even decided to hand youngster Federico Mattiello another opportunity to show off his technique and the Bianconeri youth product nearly scored an outrageous goal to demonstrate his confidence. Allegri is not only attempting to incorporate the talents from the youth academy but he has made Juventus his own. This is no longer Conte's side but Allegri's team, one that has displayed its tactical evolvement, making the most of its players' technique and playing a game that is not only courageous and strong but wonderfully elegant.

If Juventus can play like this in the Champions League, it's difficult to imagine a defeat. Whether they can overcome their psychological issues remains to be seen, but with the Christmas tree formation, they have a better chance of realising their European ambitions.

Allegri has Padoin fall-back

Nov 24, 2014

Max Allegri is expected to face selection decisions in defence and midfield ahead of the Champions League trip to Malmo.

The Bianconeri travel out to Sweden this midweek aware that a win can give them an advantage in Group A, with Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos facing each other in Spain.

For the test, Tuttosport suggest that Allegri will have to wait up to 24 hours to learn if Patrice Evra and Kwadwo Asamoah are available for first-team contention.

If they are not, then it is assumed that the Coach will run again with Simone Padoin at left-back, to complete the same back-line as at the weekend in Rome.

From that win over Lazio, it is also speculated that Allegri faces a dilemma in choosing whether or not to reinstate Arturo Vidal into the first-team, at the expense of Roberto Pereyra.

Attack, however, is most likely to see Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente maintain their positions.

Preview: Malmo vs. Juventus

Nov 24, 2014

The dramatic 3-2 victory over Olympiacos on matchday four kept Juventus's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League alive.

Now, they travel to Sweden on Wednesday night in need of another win. Heading into that encounter, Massimiliano Allegri's men are level on points with second-placed Olympiacos, who travel to Atletico Madrid.

The Old Lady's form away from home in Europe's premier club competition is not exactly positive, though. They are without a win from their last six encounters on the road, losing on five occasions.

Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres will remain on the sidelines for this clash with a thigh problem, while there are also injury concerns over left-backs Patrice Evra and Kwandwo Asamoah.

Hosting Malmo, who sit bottom of the standings on three points, have injury problems of their own, with Robin Olsen and Erik Johansson both expected to miss out with muscular complaints.

When the two sides met earlier in the group campaign, Juve ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace of goals from Argentine striker Carlos Tevez.

Malmo-Juventus Preview:
Pogba issues rallying cry

The Juventus midfielder says his side have no choice but to go
for the win if they are to reach the Champions League knockouts.

Nov 25, 2014

Paul Pogba feels nothing other than three points will do for Juventus in their make-or-break Champions League trip to Malmo.

Italian champions Juve visit Sweden on Wednesday in third place in Group A after their dramatic 3-2 win over Olympiacos last time out.

That victory put Massimiliano Allegri's side level on points with the Greek team, who travel to pool leaders Atletico Madrid this week, and kept their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

Juve have been typically dominant in Serie A this season, having dropped just five points from their 12 games so far, but have again found it tough to take that form into continental competition.

However, Pogba, who scored the winning goal in the come-from-behind success over Olympiacos, believes the attitude Juve showed to battle back from 2-1 down against Michel's side will stand them in good stead for their crucial game at Swedbank Stadion.

"We have no alternative, we must return from Sweden with three points," the Frenchman told Gazetta dello Sport after scoring twice to inspire Saturday's 3-0 win at Lazio.

"We know in the Champions League we struggle often - there is something lacking. But against Olympiacos I saw an important spirit.

"We have a good team, we can go pretty far [in the tournament], but we always need [the] concentration and continuity shown in Rome [against Lazio].

"I hope to score again - as long as it proves useful to [getting] the three points, the rest does not interest me."

Juve head to Sweden in good form, having responded to their shock 1-0 defeat at Genoa late last month by winning four games in a row while scoring 15 goals in the process.

Pogba has turned in several superb displays recently, and his performance at the Stadio Olimpico at the weekend was hailed by Allegri as the 21-year-old's best of the season to date.

It is Carlos Tevez who will likely worry Malmo most, though, with the former Manchester City striker enjoying another prolific season.

The 30-year-old has scored 11 goals in 15 games in all competitions this term - form that has earned him a long-awaited recall to the Argentina squad - and netted twice in Juve's 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture against Malmo back in September.

Wednesday could see the return of Juve's Kwadwo Asamoah from a knee problem, although the game may come too soon for Angelo Ogbonna (hamstring).

Malmo, meanwhile, go into the fixture knowing they need a win to stand any chance of qualifying from the pool.

The Swedish champions' league season is already over, and they have not played since an extra-time Svenska Cupen win over Halmia on November 15.

Age Hareide's men have struggled to make an impact in Group A and sit bottom having taken just three points from their four fixtures.

Atletico claimed a 2-0 win at Swedbank Stadion last time out - and a similar outcome on Wednesday would confirm the hosts' elimination from the competition.

OPTA FACTS

A draw would not be enough for Malmö to retain hopes of qualification if Atletico or Olympiakos win.

Juventus have failed to win in their last six matches away from home (one draw, five losses).

Another away defeat would be the fifth in a row for Juventus, setting a new club record in the competition.

Juve out to end away hoodoo

A revitalised Juventus know victory is a must as they visit Malmo.
Luca Cetta charts their recent evolution and how it must be brought to the European stage.

Nov 25, 2014

First experimented with in the summer, in recent weeks Massimiliano Allegri has been able to implement a four-man defence and Christmas tree formation to good effect. Since then Juventus have enjoyed an important win over Olympiacos and thrashed Parma, but coming back from the international break to face Lazio would be a stern test. Allegri called the matches following the October break “our worst showings this season” and did not want a repeat in the capital. The tactician got his wish as Juve dominated. “The team did well, defended when necessary and I think we played fairly well with some good passing moves.”

The change has breathed fresh life and with three wins since, scoring 13 and conceding just twice in the process, Juve are poised to hit another gear. Director Pavel Nedved ‘enjoyed the show’ in Rome and was full of praise on Monday: “This change in tactical approach represents an intelligent evolution and it is true that Juventus is becoming stronger thanks to this new style of game that he has adopted.”

For Paul Pogba it’s a stronger Juve than last year. They: “attack with more men and also counter-attack. We midfielders play behind the forwards, and it is also helpful for the guys up front.”

Allegri is helped by a cavalcade of performing individuals that will offer selection headaches ahead of the Champions League contest versus Malmo. By his own admission Carlos Tevez is in “the best form of my career” and sits atop the scorers chart with nine goals. His Spanish strike partners Fernando Llorente and Alvaro Morata are scoring with greater regularity too. Pogba was vital against Olympiacos and supreme on Saturday, while Andrea Pirlo has shaken off the cobwebs to pull the strings as only he can. Meanwhile, Roberto Pereyra has dismissed summer scepticism to make a good impression and was one of those singled out for praise by the boss on Saturday.

Juve’s aim is to now convert dominant Serie A performances to the European stage. La Stampa today focused on the ‘dichotomy’ between their domestic and continental form and urged to play ‘without limits’.

Their away form in the competition has been dire since defeating Celtic in February 2013. The Turin giants have since failed to beat Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Real Madrid, Galatasaray, Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos. Too often were the performances tepid and dull. Instead they will aim to apply the spirit and mentality exhibited on Matchday 4 on Swedish soil, where they say only one outcome will do. “We begin again to defeat to Malmo,” Pogba stated this week. “We have no alternative. We must return from Sweden with three points.” Nedved has echoed these sentiments.

The stirring win over the Greeks was a boost for confidence and showed the direction this Juve must head, but they weren’t infallible. While dangerous going forward, the Bianconeri were susceptible defending set pieces – the origin of both Olympiacos goals. Were it not for an immediate response their situation would be fragile. As it is Group A is delicately poised - Juventus could be eliminated if they falter again. Conversely, first place is up for grabs with two wins.

Allegri had previously criticised his team for wasting opportunities, but they were composed in front of goal against both Parma and Lazio and must follow through. In downing Malmo in September Tevez ended his Champions League goal drought, but has not added to his tally. He’ll be chomping at the bit to continue his purple patch.

At the other end concentration is essential. Juve don’t concede many chances – only four teams have allowed less – but have kept just one clean sheet and conceded soft goals. In a close group Juventus cannot afford a repeat and maintaining attacking pressure is a focus for Allegri to succeed: “The team works together and the more the forwards do, the easier it is for the defenders. You have to keep the ball as far away from your own box as possible and you do that by attacking.”

Currently third, a win will put Juve in a good position to qualify. With memories of last season’s failure fresh, they know they cannot crash again. But this is a team finding its groove and now it’s time to put in a dominant European display.

Malmo vs. Juventus: How the Old Lady
Should Line Up in Champions League Game

Nov 25, 2014

Having dispatched Parma comprehensively before the international break, Juventus returned to action this past weekend hoping to continue their rich vein of form. They would do just that, cruising to a comfortable 3-0 win over Lazio in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico and maintaining their three-point lead atop the Serie A standings.

The match—reviewed here—would once again show Massimiliano Allegri was right to abandon the 3-5-2 formation implemented by Antonio Conte. Having scored twice on Saturday, Paul Pogba expressed his happiness with the tactical switch in an interview with La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

“We attack with more men and we also counter-attack,” the midfielder said (h/t Football Italia). “We midfielders play behind the forwards, and it is also helpful for the guys up front.”

The new shape has clearly won over the Frenchman, who also told Italy’s famous pink paper he believes the team “is better overall” than last season. However, as attention turned to European action, Pogba also offered a note of caution, discussing the importance of the upcoming meeting with Malmo.

“We must return from Sweden with three points,” he urged, and winning the game is essential if the Bianconeri are to progress to the knockout stage. With just two matches remaining, the Turin giants will hope to take a major step towards qualification on Wednesday.

On the following pages is a look at how Juventus are expected to line up, once again deployed in Allegri’s 4-3-2-1 framework.

Goalkeeper

Once again, Gigi Buffon is certain to start between the posts for Juventus, with the club captain seeking to continue his own excellent form. While he may have been at fault for Italy against Croatia, the 36-year-old has been superb for the Bianconeri, keeping 11 clean sheets in his 16 appearances this term.

According to statistics from ESPN, Buffon has made 21 saves in Serie A and eight in the Champions League, playing a key role in that impressive defensive record.

Defence

Ahead of Buffon, Allegri will retain his new-look back four, with the three-man defence seemingly shelved permanently. As discussed here, that is a huge positive for the side, with results and performances improving dramatically since that switch was made.

The only issue at present is at left-back, with both Kwadwo Asamoah and Patrice Evra struggling to recover from injury. According to a report on the club’s official website, the latter returned to training on Sunday and could return to the lineup against Malmo.

Should he fail to do so, Simone Padoin is likely to continue in the role, despite his red card against Lazio this past weekend. The midfielder has impressed in recent matches as he has deputised in defence, proving to be a reliable member of the side.

Stephan Lichtsteiner will be at right-back, with Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini to continue their partnership in the centre.

Midfield

While the injury problems continue in defence, Allegri will be happy to see his first-choice players return to action in midfield. Andrea Pirlo made a successful comeback against Lazio, once again turning in an assured performance in Juve’s 3-0 victory.

Claudio Marchisio and Paul Pogba remain vital members of the side, while Arturo Vidal continues his own quest for form. The Chilean has been subpar in 2014-15, but the Champions League has often brought his best displays, a matter discussed in detail here.

Roberto Pereyra can consider himself unfortunate to miss out, his recent contribution has been vital to the excellent form enjoyed by the Bianconeri.

Attack

Fernando Llorente returned to the starting lineup against Parma and Lazio, proving to be an excellent focal point as Pogba and Carlos Tevez joined the attack from deeper roles. That is expected to continue against Malmo, despite the impressive displays of Alvaro Morata recently.

The young Spaniard provides a directness and an injection of pace that the Tevez-Llorente partnership can often lack, and he can expect to be introduced as the Swedish side tire late in the game.

Expected starting XI (4-3-2-1): Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini; Padoin; Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio; Pogba, Tevez; Llorente

Hareide: ‘No fear against Juve’

Nov 25, 2014

Age Hareide says that Malmo will face Juventus tomorrow evening without fear and confident of being able to achieve a result.

The Swedes sit bottom of Group A in the Champions League but host the Bianconeri with an outside chance of continuing their European season still intact.

Despite having lost the reverse fixture 2-0 in Turin, their Coach holds optimism heading into tomorrow’s contest.

“It will certainly not be the same game as before,” Hareide has told reporters today.

“Tomorrow we will have the fans on our side, who will support us from the first minute to the last.

“With them we are much stronger and I am convinced that we can aim to achieve an important result.

“We will not have fear in facing Juventus. Against them we will play as we know how to without making special arrangements for Tevez, much less any of the other players.

“If we study to mark each of their stars, we would end up completely distorting our own game. We are at home and proud of it. We will play as we know how to.

“We know it will be a particularly difficult game, we both want to continue our journey in the Champions League.

“We have had several days to prepare for this challenge and I think that the boys will give it their best effort.”

Eriksson: ‘Different to Turin’

Nov 25, 2014

Magnus Eriksson believes that Malmo will be more confident in taking on Juventus in the Champions League at home.

The two teams will meet tomorrow evening at the Swedbank Stadion in the fifth matchday of the group stage.

Despite Juve having won the first game between the two 2-0 in Turin, Malmo’s striker has issued the Italians a warning.

“It will be completely different to the game in Turin,” Eriksson told reporters at today’s conference.

“Here we have our fans and tomorrow night they will understand what that signifies. We are very confident, in our own stadium we feel stronger and Juventus do not scare us.”

The Swedes haven’t played competitively since the end of their domestic season at the start of November.

“Juventus could have better rhythm in their play than us, but we are prepared and there has also been an international break. No, we are not worried.

“I think that we will have more possession [against Juventus] and then we have to play the ball well.

“Hopefully Juventus underestimate us a bit and then we really can shake them.”

Juve call up Evra, Ogbonna

Nov 25, 2014

Juventus are able to include Patrice Evra and Angelo Ogbonna in their squad to play Malmo, but not Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Bianconeri had doubts over the trio heading into this midweek’s Champions League trip to Sweden, but are able to include two of them in the squad.

Ogbonna trained separate to his teammates today, as he is seen as targeting a full recovery in time for the weekend, whilst Evra is back working with the group and is seen as in line for a starting berth at left-back.

That is in part down to Kwadwo Asamoah’s continued absence from the training field with an inflamed knee.

Juventus squad to face Malmo: 1 Buffon, 2 Romulo, 3 Chiellini, 5 Ogbonna, 6 Pogba, 7 Pepe, 8 Marchisio, 9 Morata, 10 Tevez, 11 Coman, 12 Giovinco, 14 Llorente, 19 Bonucci, 20 Padoin, 21 Pirlo, 23 Vidal, 26 Lichtsteiner, 30 Storari, 33 Evra, 34 Rubinho, 37 Pereyra, 38 Mattiello

Tevez: We must recreate league form

Nov 25, 2014

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has urged his team-mates to recreate their Serie A form in the crunch Champions League clash at Malmo FF on Wednesday.

The Turin giants travel to Sweden in search of their first away triumph after defeats at Atletico Madrid and at Olympiacos in Group A.

Those setbacks dropped Juve to third place, level on six points with Olympiacos, who are second on goal difference.

Atletico are three points clear at the top of the pool with two games remaining.

Juve's league form has been significantly better, with the Italian champions three points clear at the top of Serie A after Saturday's 3-0 triumph at Lazio - their 10th league win in 12 games.

"Our full focus is on the game at Malmo," Tevez said to Turin based newspaper Tuttosport. "On Wednesday we must play with the same determination that we displayed against Parma and Lazio.

"If we played like we did, then it will be difficult to stop us.

"We are playing good football and we have tactically found a balance."

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri knows that failure to win on Wednesday could prove costly for his side.

The Turin club end the group stages at home to Atletico on December 9.

"We need to get six points in our last two league games," he said. "Four may be enough, or even three, but who knows?

"Olympiacos are ahead of us in the head-to-head, but they have to get six points to qualify mathematically, so everything is still wide open.

"We'll know what we've got to do after the game against Malmo."

Malmo, who lost 2-0 in Turin in their group opener, host the Italians needing a win to revive their hopes of playing European football after the new year.

The Swedish champions lie at the foot of the standings, with one win from four games.

A victory over Juve coupled with an Atletico Madrid win over Olympiacos in the other pool game, would see Malmo join the Italians and the Greeks on six points heading into the final round of games.

"We have every possibility to take a positive result," Malmo defender Anton Tinnerholm said to the Italian media. "We want to go into the final group game still alive to continue to play in Europe.

"We will try to make life difficult for Juventus.

"I don't think they know what kind of atmosphere awaits them at the SwedBank Stadion."

The Blues warmed up for the European encounter with last week's 4-0 triumph in a friendly against Finnish champions HJK Helsinki.

Malmo coach Age Hareide will have all of his players available.

The visitors welcome back defender Patrice Evra from injury while they are without midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah, who is sidelined with a thigh problem.

Arturo Vidal is set to start and play in support of attacking pair Fernando Llorente and Tevez.

Tevez: 'Malmo pitch is terrible'

Nov 25, 2014

arlos Tevez is concerned about the pitch ahead of a crucial Juventus Champions League trip to Malmo.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET on Wednesday and the Bianconeri need a victory in Sweden.

“The playing surface is not ideal for either team, really,” said the Argentina international in his Press conference.

Juve have lost both their European away fixtures this season, 1-0 at both Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos.

“We must prove that we are able to play good football even on such a bad pitch. As soon as we arrived here today went straight to inspect the turf.

“We have a very good chance of qualifying for the next round. I don’t want to talk about percentages, but it’s all in our hands. We have to win tomorrow.”

Tevez is arguably one of the players who most benefited from the change of system to 4-3-2-1.

“The system makes no difference to me,” he insisted. “The Coach has always given me the freedom to play where I prefer.

“I can play as a centre-forward or go deeper to find the ball, no matter what the system.”

Tevez was also asked about teammate Paul Pogba, who bagged a brace in the 3-0 Serie A victory over Lazio on Saturday.

“He is a great player and proves it every time. He has the characteristics to go far.”

Allegri: Juventus Must Be Alert And Awake Against Malmo

Nov 25, 2014

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has stated that Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture against Malmo is a must win game if the Bianconeri are to progress in the competition.

The Serie A leaders currently sit third in Group A, level with second place Olympiacos, and despite once again dominating the domestic football scene, the Turin giants have struggled when playing in continental competition.

“It is no accident that we have lost the two away games we have played,” Allegri told a press conference on Tuesday.

“In Madrid we played with great personality and in Greece we had many occasions to win although we did not play as well as the first game. Tomorrow we need the result and we just have to be alert and awake and understand how you have to play on this field.

“At home Malmo are a team that plays football very differently, more aggressively and have achieved some good performances. They didn’t deserve to lose to Atletico [Madrid] and tomorrow it will be difficult for us because at this point in the group everyone is in contention to qualify.”

The 47 year old then turned his attention to the condition of the pitch at the Swedbank Stadion which has reportedly caused some concern amongst the Juventus team.

“It’s useless to talk about the pitch, we must adapt quickly because we have to win tomorrow. We have 95 minutes on hand to do it. We are in a good form and we have all the credentials to do so.”

Juventus won the corresponding home fixture of this tie in September with Carlos Tevez netting a brace and Allegri is keen for more of the same from his Argentine hit man this time around.

“I hope he can score tomorrow just as he did in the home game. He had gone many years without scoring [in the Champions League] and then he did [against Malmo].”

Atletico Madrid play Olympiacos in Spain in the other Group A match.

Malmo V Juvenus: Probable Line-Ups

Nov 26, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri is set to continue with his four-man Juventus backline against Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The Bianconeri travel to the Swedbank Stadion to take on the Swedes in a must win match, if they are to have any chance of making it to the group stage of the competition.

Allegri is set to field an almost identical line-up to that which won 3-0 against Lazio on Saturday, with the only change being Arturo Vidal replacing Roberto Pereyra behind the strikers.

Malmo (4-4-2): Olsen; Concha, Johansson, Helander, Konate; Tinnerholm, Thern, Adu, Forsberg; Eriksson, Rosenberg.

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Padoin; Marchisio, Pirlo, Pogba; Vidal; Tevez, Llorente.

Malmo V Juventus – Preview: Remaining In The Hunt

Nov 26, 2014

Juventus will play against Malmo at the Swedbank Stadion on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

The Italian champions emerged victorious when both sides faced each other on matchday one of this year’s competition, as Carlos Tevez scored both goals in Juve’s 2-0 win against the Swedes.

The Bianconeri come into this game on the back of a 3-0 win against Lazio on Saturday night and they sit three points clear of second-placed Roma in the Serie A table.

The Himmelsblatt have not played a league match since they won the 2014 Swedish Allsvenskan, which concluded on November 1. Their recent matches include a 2-1 win against third-tier side IS Halmia in the Svenska Cupen on November 15, and they defeated Finnish team HJK Helsinki 4-0 on November 20 in a friendly.

In the previous round of Champions League action, Juventus emerged victorious over Olympiacos 3-2 in Turin, while Malmo lost 2-0 at home to Atletico Madrid.

The Bianconeri are equal second in Group A, having collected six points from four games, as have Olympiacos. The Himmelsblatt are bottom of the group with three points, but they are mathematically still in with a chance of qualification, especially if they can pull a shock win against the Italian champions, and the Greeks lose to Atletico.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has ditched the 3-5-2 formation used by his predecessor Antonio Conte, and has implemented the 4-3-1-2 to great effect. Allegri has been using Roberto Pereyra in the trequartista role for Serie A games but Arturo Vidal is predicted to take up that role against the Swedes.

Malmo coach Age Hareide usually lines his team up in a standard 4-4-2 formation but he has used the 5-3-2 formation in some of the Himmelsblatt’s previous Champions Leagues fixtures and he will likely play with five at the back against the Bianconeri.

French full-back Patrice Evra is expected to return from a hamstring injury for Juventus, but Martin Caceres and Kwadwo Asamoah will still be sidelined.

Malmo are expected to welcome back Robin Olsen and Erik Johansson from thigh strains and Anton Tinnerholm will be returning from a calf injury.

Expected Starting XIs

Juventus (4-3-1-2): Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Evra; Marchisio, Pirlo, Pogba; Vidal; Tevez, Llorente

Malmo (5-3-2): Olsen; Timmerholm, Helander, Halsti, Johansson, Ricardinho; Eriksson, Adu, Forsber; Thelin, Rosenberg

Juventus unlucky in Champions League - Allegri

The Bianconeri coach is hopeful his side can end
their poor form in away games in Wednesday's match versus Malmo.

Nov 26, 2014

Massimiliano Allegri feels Juventus have been unlucky in away games in the Champions League so far this term.

The Serie A leaders have been beaten by Atletico Madrid and Olympiakos so far in Group A and are in danger of missing out on the last 16, despite winning both home games.

Wednesday's clash against Malmo gives Juve a chance to climb above Olympiakos before hosting Spanish champions Atletico in the final group game, but Allegri will not underestimate the threat posed by the Swedish champions and has demanded more from his players at the Swedbank Stadion.

"We didn’t deserve to lose our last two European away matches. We played with plenty of personality in Madrid and fashioned a host of chances in Greece," Allegri said at a press conference.

"Wednesday will be a different game entirely and we’ll need to be quick and alert.

"Malmo are a very strong team at home with more pressure in their style of play. Against Atletico last time out they deserved more than they got and we're under no illusions: Wednesday's game will be very difficult.

"It is important to be focused. We know how we can play and we must be at our best. We need to play with more tempo and we need to take any opportunities that come our way.

"We are here to play the whole 90 minutes and we know what needs to be done."

Juve beat Malmo 2-0 in the reverse fixture on matchday one, a Carlos Tevez double giving Allegri's side all three points.

Padoin ahead of Evra for Juve

Nov 26, 2014

Simone Padoin looks likely to retain his place at left-back for Juventus, at the expense of Patrice Evra.

The Bianconeri face Malmo in Sweden tonight as they look to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League. A win for the Old Lady coupled with an Atletico Madrid win over Olympiacos would leave the Italian champions needing just a point from their last game to progress.

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri looks set to stick with his 4-3-1-2 system, with Arturo Vidal playing just behind Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez according to Corriere dello Sport.

There had been speculation that Patrice Evra’s return to fitness could see him take over at left-back from Simone Padoin, but both Eurosport and Corriere dello Sport are of the opinion that Padoin will be preferred.

Gianluigi Buffon will take up his usual place in goal, with Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in the centre of defence and Stephan Lichtsteiner on the opposite flank to Padoin.

Roberto Pereyra looks set to be the player to make way for Vidal, with Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio making up the midfield.

Probable Juventus team to face Malmo: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Padoin; Marchisio, Pirlo, Pogba; Vidal; Llorente, Tevez

Line-ups: Malmo-Juventus

Nov 26, 2014

Juventus are in Sweden for a must-win Champions League game with Malmo, starting Carlos Tevez, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo.

It kicks off at 20.45 CET and is the chance for Juve to end their dismal European away record, having lost 1-0 at both Atletico Madrid and Olympiacos.

The Bianconeri have been revived since moving to a Christmas Tree formation and stick with it again this evening, but Tevez and Vidal support Fernando Llorente rather than Roberto Pereyra in a trequartista role.

Pirlo returns in midfield with Paul Pogba, who is fresh from bagging a brace in the 3-0 win at Lazio on Saturday.

Kwadwo Asamoah, Andrea Barzagli and Martin Caceres are still out injured, but Patrice Evra and Angelo Ogbonna are back for a spot on the bench.

Simone Padoin takes the left-back spot.

Malmo have beaten Olympiacos here and were very unlucky to lose 2-0 against Atletico Madrid, so are not to be underestimated on what Tevez described as a “horrible” pitch.

Before that defeat, Malmo had been unbeaten in eight consecutive UEFA home ties with eight clean sheets.

The last Italian team to visit was Inter, who lost 1-0 in 1989-90.

They need a victory to retain any hope of staying in the competition and the only absentee is defender Johan Hammar.

Markus Rosberg is the one to watch, as he has scored four of Malmo’s last five Champions League goals, including qualifiers.

Juventus defeated Malmo 2-0 in Turin back in September with a Tevez brace, but it took until the 59th minute to break through the Swedish defence.

It’s reported the Bianconeri will wear the green away strip, which proved hugely unpopular and was only worn once in the loss at Atletico Madrid.

Earlier this evening the Juventus youth team drew 2-2 in Malmo and were eliminated from the competition.

Malmo: Olsen; Tinnerholm, E Johansson, Helander, Ricardinho; Eriksson, Adu, Halsti, Forsberg; Rosenberg, Kiese Thelin

Malmo bench: Azinovic, Concha, Konate, Thern, Cibicki, Rakip, Mehmeti

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Bonucci, Chiellini, Padoin; Marchisio, Pirlo, Pogba; Vidal; Tevez, Llorente

Juventus bench: Storari, Ogbonna, Evra, Pereyra, Morata, Coman, Giovinco

Marotta on Pogba and Malmo

Nov 26, 2014

Juventus director Beppe Marotta has “never considered selling Paul Pogba” and warned there are “no alibis” against Malmo.

They go into a crucial Champions League match in Sweden this evening and the playing surface is already looking terrible even before kick-off.

“We have pointed out to UEFA that the pitch is not up to the standard of this game and a competition like the Champions League,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia in what stopped short of a formal protest.

“However, it must not be an alibi, as we have to prove that we are strong even on this turf.”

Arturo Vidal is in the starting XI in place of Roberto Pereyra, while Kwadwo Asamoah is still out injured.

“Vidal is doing well, but still not in sparkling form. The operation on his knee really caused him a lot of problems, but nothing serious.

“Asamoah’s knee is a little inflamed, so it is too early to attempt a diagnosis.”

Marotta was also asked about Pogba, who scored a brace in the 3-0 victory over Lazio and is fast becoming one of the best midfielders in Europe.

“We never even considered the possibility of selling Pogba. He is a great player, one of the best youngsters in the world who is a part of our squad and Juventus intend to keep him.”
