If you wanted flat out domination and a no-nonsense approach from Juventus in their second leg tie against Trabzonspor, that's exactly what you got on Thursday night in Turkey.

It may read as the same final score as the first leg in Turin, but it was anything but that. There were minimal heart-attack-inducing opportunities for all of us watching. Juventus came out flying to begin the game, rightfully taking the lead on Arturo Vidal's 18th minute goal and then having Dani Osvaldo put a bow on the neatly-wrapped Europa League present 12 minutes before halftime to put Juve up 4-0 on aggregate.

Done deal. Onto the Round of 16.

It was exactly the way you'd want Juventus to go about things in Turkey. There was no messing around. There was no funny business. There was no letting Trabzonspor make things even a wee bit interesting. Juventus put their foot on the gas, stormed into the second leg on Trabzonspor's home turf and put things away in a hurry.

Now, it's into the round of the sweet 16 where Juventus and Fiorentina will renew acquaintances. You think Antonio Conte will be reminding his players what happened in Firenze in the middle of October as a point of motivation? Oh you know he will. Why wouldn't he? This is Antonio Conte, master of the motivation and king of classic Juve grinta.

Random thoughts and observations

• Say what you want about who the opposition was, but this was Sebastian Giovinco at his finest against Trabzonspor. He was just about everywhere humanly possible on Thursday night, racking up a WhoSocred rating of over eight — in the first half. That's flat out bonkers. Even crazier when you consider he hadn't scored a goal. Just a damn good, Man of the Match performance from the little guy, who hasn't had many opportunities to play this season. And he certainly worked his tail off to deserve it.

• The more Claudio Marchisio plays as a vice-Andrea Pirlo, the more I like it. Maybe that is because some of the best games he's had this season have been as a regista, but he just seems like a natural position for him. It fits his playing style well and he's adapted to it incredibly fast.

• Have we ever seen a faster non-injury-related sub from Conte like what he pulled with Paul Pogba and Simone Padoin in the first half? It's like Conte looked up at the scoreboard, remembered who was on the schedule this weekend and went to his human victory cigar a little bit earlier than we all anticipated.

Onur Kıvrak - The Trabzonspor goalkeeper kept the scoreline respectable as he made several smart stops to deny Marchisio, Pogba and Giovinco. Time after time, he was let down by his porous defence.

José Bosingwa - The former Chelsea man looked disinterested and failed to track the run of the Juventus forwards.

Mustafa Yumlu - The centre-back will still have images of Giovinco running round in his head although he did salvage some of his integrity with a number of last-ditch blocks.

Aykut Demir - Won a number of crucial headers to deny Osvaldo but struggled to keep a straight defensive line and often played the Juventus forwards onside.

Kadir Keleş - Could not cope with the threat of Isla down the wing and only a 37th-minute injury spared him from further embarrassment.

Özer Hurmacı - He went the closest to scoring for Trabzonspor but conceded possession too easily and offered little protection to the back four.

Didier Zokora - The Ivorian failed to replicate his good performance from the first leg and he looked lethargic in the midfield as he struggled to get to grips with Marchisio and Vidal.

Olcan Adın - The Trabzonspor wideman was too static and his lack of movement and incision ensured he was easily marked out of the game.

Adrian Mierzejewski - The Poland international tried to make things happen in the Trabzonspor midfield but lacked the service and finishing to make a difference.

Florent Malouda - The former Chelsea midfielder had scored four goals in his previous seven matches for the club but he looked rusty after his recent injury problems, frequently giving the ball away in advanced areas.

Marc Janko - The Austria international regularly failed to make himself available for the pass and his poor hold-up play ensured Juventus quickly regained possession.

Substitutions

Caner Osmanpaşa - Was introduced at half-time and added some stability to the vulnerable Trabzonspor defence.

Alexandru Bourceanu - The Romanian was introduced to the action late on and helped his side finish strongly thanks to his accurate passing and composure on the ball.

Zeki Yavru - The left-back was an upgrade on Kadir and restricted Isla's impact in the second half.

Gianluigi Buffon - The Azzurri No.1 added another clean sheet to the collection though in truth, he was hardly tested.

Martín Cáceres - The Uruguayan did not put a foot wrong in defence and looked assured in possession. Was substituted shortly before the hour mark.

Leonardo Bonucci - The centre-back was first to everything and complimented his solid defensive display with some incisive forward passing.

Angelo Ogbonna - A confident showing from the former Torino man who was solid in the air and marshalled Janko to good effect.

Mauricio Isla - He was a constant thorn in the Trabzonspor defence with his ability to pick a pass and exploit wide areas. Hit the post in the early minutes.

Paul Pogba - The France midfielder tested Onur with a number of long-range efforts and he helped Juventus to dominate the midfield before he was substituted in preparation for the weekend clash with Milan.

Claudio Marchisio - Flourished in Pirlo's deep-lying playmaker role, breaking up the Trabzonspor midfield and springing Juventus attacks with his accurate range of passing.

Arturo Vidal - The Chilean showed why he is one of the most coveted players in Europe with another faultless box-to-box performance. Consistently got into dangerous attacking positions and scored his 17th goal of the season with an instinctive finish.

Federico Peluso - The left wing-back was rarely exposed defensively though he struggled to make an impact in attacking positions. Saw a first-half effort disallowed before missing a sitter late on.

SEBASTIAN GIOVINCO - His best performance of the season. The Juventus No.12 was brimming with confidence and tore the Trabzonspor defence to pieces with his clever footwork and movement, providing two assists.

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo - The on-loan Southampton striker has adapted well to Juventus' style and he linked up superbly with Giovinco all game to score his second goal for the club.

Substitutions

Andrea Barzagli - Got some much-needed minutes under his belt as he helped Juventus to keep their clean sheet when he was introduced from the bench late on.

Simone Padoin - The utility man gave an energetic display in the Juventus midfield and twice went close to scoring.

Andrea Pirlo - Came on to make his 123rd appearance in UEFA club competition and used his experience and intelligence to help Juventus close out the win.

Antonio Conte says Sebastian Giovinco is right to be "angry" at his lack of goals but was thrilled with his performance as Juventus defeated Trabzonspor in the Europa League last 32.

The striker complained earlier this week that he was being undeservedly left on the sidelines for the Bianconeri, but he was a key player in Turkey as he played a part in both goals to help the Serie A leaders to a 2-0 win on the night and a 4-0 aggregate triumph.

"Giovinco did well with the assists, but he is right to get angry when he doesn't score," Conte told Sky Sport after the match. "He is a striker, so he should want to score goals.

"In order to continue winning in Serie A and the Europa League I need everyone to perform. Some of these lads are mistreated by the critics, but they can gain confidence and form by playing well in these games."

The Juve coach insisted that Sunday's visit to AC Milan was not playing on his mind when he formulated a gameplan to face Trabzonspor, despite fielding a number of second-string players.

Daniel Osvaldo revealed there’s a reason he combines so well with new Juventus teammate Sebastian Giovinco.

The striker is on loan from Southampton and has netted in each of the two Europa League games against Trabzonspor.

“We put them under pressure straight away and fortunately were able to score the two goals early, so we put the qualification under control,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 win in Turkey.

Montella: 'Juve last team I'd pick!'

Vincenzo Montella saw positives in Fiorentina’s draw with Esbjerg, but admits Juventus would be “the last team” he’d pick to face.

The 1-1 result today saw the Viola go through 4-2 on aggregate and they will take on Juve in the Europa League Round of 16.

“It was important to give a sense of consistency to some players. We controlled the first half and the tempo was low, but after the break we raised the tempo a little for 15 minutes and scored,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

Juventus finally perform
to expectations in Europe

At long last we see Juventus perform to expectation in Europe, playing the mesmeric brand of football that has enchanted Italian viewers. Had they performed with the same courage and conviction in the Champions League, they would have perhaps been well on their way to qualifying for the quarter-finals, but instead they jetted off to Turkey to defeat Trabzonspor 2-0 in the Europa League, leaving the Turks feeling inadequate in the face of such superior opponents.

Essentially, Trabzonspor's failure to manage a performance was due to their inability to deal with Juventus' runners from midfield who continuously exposed the back-line. With options everywhere, it was difficult for the Turks to contain the pressure.

Yet despite the Old Lady's fluid movements and accurate passing, the Black Sea giants must acknowledge that their lax approach in defending dangerous moves cost them dearly. A perfect example of this was when Arturo Vidal went running to latch onto the loose ball to score the first goal. The Turkish defender closest to the action stood and watched before attempting to run and block the Chilean. Had he moved faster, he may have rescued his side, but instead Vidal was left to score his 17th goal of the season. The player has netted in every competition under Antonio Conte.

Relaxed attitudes aside, it was more surprising to see how poor the Black Sea outfit were at closing down the spaces, with gaps visible even between the two centre-backs. However, the team's biggest problem was most definitely the ease with which defenders were dragged out of position. Sebastian Giovinco greatly enjoyed taking advantage of such a weakness. The maestro behind all of Juve's best attacking passages, he showed great intellect with his movements. One in particular was when he moved to the right, got past his man, dragged all the defenders away and left Pablo Osvaldo, who had made a great run forward, with ample space to latch onto his pass and strike unmarked. The chance was wasted but the ease with which an entire back-line shifted to mark one player who engaged their attention was truly shocking.

To note all of Giovinco's brilliance would require an infinite amount of words. He was simply dazzling to watch: His understanding of space, his intellectual runs, his fast feet and quick brain; but nothing proved as impressive to watch as his awareness -- that quick look up to notice the situation developing around him and then to execute the perfect pass. His excellence was perfectly encapsulated in a move just before halftime when he dropped deep with his back to goal, quickly looked up and delivered a sublime diagonal pass to Mauricio Isla on the right. Sadly, it was another wasted opportunity.

His moves ensured the others scored and Osvaldo was quick to pay tribute to his partner for his goal. It's a shame that Giovinco's own finishing proved so underwhelming. If he is to score goals then he must work on his aim as his shots are often struck straight at the goalkeeper -- that marvellous goalkeeper, Onur Kivrak, who kept Trabzonspor from being utterly humiliated.

The Turkish side owe much to their outstanding man between the sticks who not only boasts quick reflexes but an excellent vision that allowed him to come out at the right times to prevent his team from conceding even more goals. The way in which he would spread himself forced the Juve forwards into making better finishes -- hence the squandering of so many chances.

While Osvaldo has proved capable of forming an important part of this team, his decision-making in front of goal must be improved. Very often his final decision was seemingly bizarre, while he was responsible for wasting several opportunities on goal. With the result practically assured, both he and Giovinco were allowed to get away with their profligacy, but against better opposition, this will need to change to avoid provoking nervy endings to matches.

As for Trabzonspor, they were left feeling despondent. Poor defensively, their attack failed to trouble the visitors as they struggled for control of the ball. Their attempts to press Juventus high up the pitch in hopes of winning the ball in an advantageous position to strike worked against them. Juventus instead, used this to their advantage by overcoming their midfield to create a numerical superiority upfront.

Pitted against a side with such superior quality, they were lulled into a false sense of confidence in the first leg. They may have lost 2-0 but they were sure they could cause some damage at home and in front of their own fans. However, on this occasion the real Juve, the one we witness win with such ease week in and week out in Serie A, turned up determined to play.

One must also take a moment to acknowledge the excellence of Claudio Marchisio, a player who is rarely allowed to start. He played a truly remarkable game in Andrea Pirlo's role. His ability to adapt to different positions and still introduce his own personal take on them makes him a valuable asset to the team, while his professional attitude in awaiting his chances to play are that of a team player, one Conte is especially happy to have.

A game plan perfectly executed by a coach who assessed and studied his opponent closely, one only hopes Juventus continue to play with such determination for the rest of the competition -- especially as they face Fiorentina next.

a very impressive performance against Trabzonspor in Turkey.

Juventus found themselves in the unusual position of making their second visit to Turkey in the space of three months for an encounter that would determine whether or not they advance to the next stages of European competition.

This game was a far cry from the debacle against Galatasaray last December. This game was more of a walk in the park. The game at the Ataturk was like overcoming one of those mud-filled military obstacle courses. Add some wooden poles and barbed wire to the field and it would have been. Literally.

The game versus Galatasaray was, due to earlier incompetence in the group stages as well as circumstances I've eluded to above, an incredibly uncomfortable game that ended with a real sour taste in the mouth for all Juventini.

Coming into Thursday night's game with a 2-0 lead, there was a completely different feel to it and it had a much more relaxed atmosphere. Nevertheless, the Juve players came flying out of the traps and took the initiative immediately. Almost as if Antonio Conte had warned the team to finish this tie off early so that the team could start preparing for Sunday's big game against Milan.

It only took four minutes for Juve to create their first real opportunity of the game with Mauricio Isla's shot being deflected onto the upright. This moment would set the tone for Isla for the night, as the Chilian spent most of the game attacking the right hand flank and causing a lot of problems for the Trabzonspor defence.

Another player who has not been as integral to Juve this season as he would have liked is Claudio Marchisio, and his performance in the regista role was very encouraging. In the space of a few early first half minutes Il Principino had a good effort on goal and put in a muscular tackle in midfield which led to an attack and Arturo Vidal chance. This high-tempo start from Juve was suiting the energetic Marchisio and as the game progressed, he started to show how good his passing range was. Something he normally doesn't get the opportunity to display.

As the minutes started to pass Juve started creating chance after chance. Paul Pogba had a great effort on goal and shambolic defending from Trabzonspor saw multiple efforts from Juve players following a corner which ended with a Federico Peluso strike ruled out for offside.

Conte was becoming irate on the sidelines due to the lack of decisiveness in front of goal but his emotions soon turned to joy after some brilliant interplay between Sebastian Giovinco and Dani Osvaldo led to the opener in the 17th minute by who else but Vidal. This was the Chilean internationals 17th goal of the season. Not bad for a midfielder.

As the first half progressed, Giovinco and Osvaldo's performances improved and their movement was causing havoc in the Trabzonspor defence. This was a team that had not been beaten in the previous seven Europa League games they had played at home this season.

Granted, there is clearly a gap in quality between this competition and the Champions League. The way in which Juve tore apart the Trabzonspor defence was very impressive. It was a very different game to the first leg affair and Juve captain Gigi Buffon could have been playing Flappy Bird on his phone (if he had downloaded it in time) for most of the first half without any problems.

Juve did ease off the gas for a period after the opening goal, but in the 32nd minute some more brilliant play led to the second goal of the night. A beautifully weighted pass (à la Pirlo) from Marchisio to Giovinco who then crossed for Osvaldo to nod it home saw Juve essentially book their place in the last 16 with an hour left on the clock. Conte clearly felt this was the case as he replaced Pogba with Simone Padoin 10 minutes before half time, clearly with one eye on the San Siro at the weekend.

With such a big lead in the game the second half essentially became a non-event. Giovinco, Osvaldo and Padoin all came close to extending Juve's lead and Ogbonna was unlucky not to get awarded a penalty. Conte replaced Martin Caceres and Marchisio with Andrea Barzagli and Andrea Pirlo, respectfully. Both players had put in a good shift and with Vidal's suspension against Milan the 20 minutes rest to Marchisio made sense.

The scoreline tonight was the same as the first leg but they were very different affairs. This performance was impressive in every department and saw many players who have found themselves on the periphery of the first team perform to a really high level. This is very encouraging for Conte and a huge credit has to go to him for getting such a positive attitude from each and every one of his squad players.

You can see that the tournament means a lot to the team with the final being in Juventus Stadium and progression to the last 16 in Trabzponsor will go somewhat towards exorcising those ghosts of Istanbul last December.

Awaiting Juve in the last 16 happens to be Serie A rivals Fiorentina, a team that will also provide Conte's side with the opportunity to exorcise some ghosts of the recent past. Although that defeat in Florence perhaps kick started Juve's season in earnest I'm sure Conte and co will be out for revenge. The fact that both legs are immediately following the Serie A meeting between both clubs makes it all the more intriguing. Let's not forget that Juve and Fiorentina met in the UEFA Cup Final in 1990. I'm sure Juventini will accept a similar scoreline in the next round.

How AC Milan Will Line Up Against Juventus

The Serie A weekend heats up as Milan are set to host Juventus on Sunday, with the Rossoneri desperately needing points as they look to continue their recent domestic run under new coach Clarence Seedorf.

Seedorf has lost just one league match since taking over for the maligned Massimiliano Allegri last month and will continue to try to mold the team in his image—quick passes and offensive, with a constant high pressure.

Unfortunately, Mario Balotelli will be iffy for the match and is expected to be out of the lineup. Super Mario hasn't yet faced Juventus in Serie A since joining Milan last January.

At the back, Marco Amelia is expected to make his third start of the season as Christian Abbiati deals with a minor injury. Even though Amelia has committed errors that would excite Nelson Dida, he looked a lot better in the last match against Sampdoria, where he made a few crucial interventions that kept the Blucerchiati off the scoresheet.

The only certainty on the defensive line is Adil Rami, who continues to impress by not only being a physical presence, but showing calmness while under pressure and the ability to test the opposing goalkeeper from defense when he ventures forward.

His partner will most likely be Daniele Bonera, who has been favored over Philippe Mexes.

The full-backs will have their hands busy dealing with the constant offensive surges from the Juventus wing-backs, who love to get forward and sling in crosses to the hulking figure of Fernando Llorente.

According to the probable formations from La giornalaccio rosa, youngster Mattia De Sciglio is preferred over Ignazio Abate on the right, while Urby Emanuelson will be deployed on the opposite flank.

The two holding midfielders have arguably the toughest job on the pitch as they look to quell the five-man Juventus midfield that sees the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio and Paul Pogba approach the box looking to create a score.

With Sulley Muntari suspended, Riccardo Montolivo and Michael Essien are expected to be the two chosen to patrol in front of the defense.

The Italian striker gives Milan a much different look up front, as he can exploit spaces around the penalty box and has always been an aerial threat. Pazzini also does a decent job holding up the ball and shielding himself from defenders, so he'll have his hands full throughout the match.

The most interesting decision will be whether or not we see Keisuke Honda from the start. The Japanese international still hasn't gotten into the flow of things, and he might be benched in favor of Andrea Poli, who gives Milan plenty of energy up front and was used successfully in the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
