Juve Cruise Past Inter 3-1

Juventus continued their pursuit of another Serie A championship with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Juventus Stadium.

Juventus kicked off with the style and intimidation that we know all too well from the Italian champions, and Inter Milan struggled to keep up with Andrea Pirlo and company as they went through the motions of testing the visitor’s defence.

Alas, it was only 15 minutes into the match when the inexperienced Mateo Kovacic lost his marker and allowed Stephan Lichtsteiner to break free in the box. Andrea Pirlo then kindly obliged with a wonderful through ball, leaving the full back with nothing more to do than simply guide his header into the back of the net.

Juventus had their lead, and it was well deserved.

Yet the most dangerous thing for any side is to score in the first 20 minutes. That was all too evident for the Old Lady as they took their foot of the gas and allowed Inter to slowly prod around the midfield and search for a response.

The full extent of the visitor's stumbling attack was a poorly aimed shot from Rodrigo Palacio just five minutes from time that could have ended up in the back of the net on another day. However, it was Juventus who went into the break with a well deserved lead.

The second half began in much the same manner as the first with a full-on blitz from the home side, which resulted in a goal from none other than Giorgio Chiellini within the first two minutes of the half. A rebound from the opening corner of the half came back in to the Inter box and allowed the towering defender the time and space to knock home with his weaker foot. Inter were two goals down before they knew where they were.

Then things fell apart.

Eight minutes later, a throw-in for Juventus found the stronghold of Fernando Llorente's feet. He then passed the ball on to Paul Pogba. The thundering midfielder then hit a misguided shot straight at Samir Handanovic, only for Arturo Vidal to latch up the rebound and knock home for Juventus' third straight goal.

Yet that wasn't the end of things, as Inter found no more than a fool's amount of hope when Rolando knocked home from a rebound in the box following a stray corner late in the second half. The goal came just after the 70th minute, and alongside the introduction of Diego Milito, the visitors looked as though the wind was finally in their sails.

The late rally saw mischief throughout the Juventus final third, amounting to a golden opportunity from Palacio, who, as mentioned, knocked the ball over from a poor header just five minutes from time. That was their chance to pull something back from the game, and they failed to take advantage of it.

Antonio Conte's side now sit atop of the Italian top division with nine points between them and second-placed Roma, who of course have a game in hand. This was a complete win that showed the true extent between the talent within both these sides.

Initial reaction and random observations

There was a lot of talk entering the campaign's second edition of the Derby d'Italia on Sunday night in Turin. Probably more than usual due to what went on between the two clubs off the field when the transfer window was open. "Could Inter roll into Juventus' house and cause some problems?" they said.

Not so fast, my friends. With that, order was restored in Italy.

A red-hot atmosphere at Juventus Stadium was the perfect surrounding for what went down on the field Sunday night. Juventus dominated Inter for 60 minutes, taking a 3-0 lead along the way behind goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner, Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal.

Even with Inter finding some sign of existence in the final 20 or 25 minutes of the match, they finished with just two shots on goal. Marco Storari tried his damnedest to pull a Gigi Buffon and not do anything for a full 90 minutes, but a couple of noticeable defensive breakdowns prevented Juve recording a shutout without facing any kind of pressure on goal.

Overall, however, there was no doubting who the better team was for the vast majority of the game. And there was no doubting that the final score was a clear indicator of just how much better Juve were than their black and blue rivals from Milan.

Random thoughts and observations

•I will start the randomness with this: I think Antonio Conte made the right call playing Andrea Pirlo from the opening whistle against Inter. Something is just telling me it worked out quite well.

•It seems like in every preview for the last month I've highlighted the importance of Juventus' two wingbacks. Against Inter, they proved once again what this team can do when their two wingers are some of the best players on the field. Lichtsteiner and Asamoah were great, running wild up and down the flanks. Inter had no answer for both of them, plain and simple.

•Just singling out Lichtsteiner for a second: How good of form is he in right now? He's been absolutely phenomenal the past month or two. If it isn't an assist, he's scoring a goal like tonight.

•Can we get Carlos Tevez a goal, please? He hasn't found the back of the net since Juve's 4-1 win over Atalanta on Dec. 22. Not to say he's paying poorly, because he clearly isn't. But you just kinda get a gut feeling that whenever he breaks his 2014 duck, the goals will start flowing again like they were in the first half the season.

Juventus 3-1 Inter Review –
All Is Right, Once More

Juventus absolutely needed a result today. After a match last week which was equal parts inspiring and disappointing, fighting back a man down to draw Lazio at the Olimpico, the lead at the top was cut down to 6 points. While many Laziale were likely remiss about their team doing bitter rivals Roma a favor, the pressure suddenly increased on Juve.

Roma, much like the version of Juve during Antonio Conte’s maiden season, lack the European distraction after all. To make Juventini bite their nails even harder, Roma would be playing at home versus Parma earlier in the day. But then a funny thing happened — torrential downpour fell over Rome, and the gaping, water-logged rented space i lupi call home could not be made fit for calcio in the face of mother nature. The match was stopped shortly into the first half without a goal scored. Many Juventini on the interwebs expressed their chagrin at the decision, in light of examples dating back to Perugia in 2000 to Istanbul just two months ago. However, this could have turned out far better for Juventus, who suddenly had a golden opportunity increase the gap to nine full points, shifting the pressure back to Roma despite the game in hand.

The team got the memo.

Juventus played tough from the first whistle. They controlled the ball, and played their game, taking it to Inter. Without any of the weather issues faced in Rome, the creativity Juventus possesses in spades from the midfield was well on display. It culminated rather perfectly with Andrea Pirlo, who followed a long line of players who are, you know, “above average” to “exceptional” (and usually Italian), leaving Inter at a young age to flourish. In Pirlo’s case, he became one of the greatest playmakers the peninsula has ever produced. His curling chip pass hit his moving target, Stephan Lichtsteiner, with the precision of an AIM-9 Sidewinder. The Swiss Express did the rest, perfectly heading the ball past the grasp of Samir Handanovic.

The most common scoreline ever in the Derby D’Transfer Failure D’Italia. And that would essentially be the first half. Juventus would continue the pressure in Conte workmanlike fashion. With the exception of a frightening counter-attack at around the 40’ mark, in which Rodrigo Palacio skied his shot, Inter had no real chances. The half belonged to Juve, personified by a thunderous shot from Kwadwo Asamoah, who followed up on his own rebound off the fists of Handanovic like he was friggin Lebron James or something.

Two very short minutes of extra time could not produce another goal, despite a golden opportunity from Giorgio Chiellini. Though the center back handled the ball on his effort, his run looked more striker than defender, dare I say conjured images of Beckenbauer or Baresi. However shortly after the beginning of the second half, after Juve continued to keep the pressure on and earned another corner, Chiellini made it count.

I have often mused about how Serie A is re-calibrating back to normal post calciopoli; how things are going back to normal. Nowhere is this exemplified more than Inter’s continuing to purge itself of whatever talent it produces, and I frequently think about how not too long ago the management let Phillipe Coutinho go in lieu of Ricky Alvarez. Suddenly it dawned upon me.

And speaking of strikers, how about that Fernando Llorente fella from Bilbao who’s holdup play (#YOLLO) sparked the third goal, scored by none other than Arturo “I couldn’t start at Roma” Vidal? Yada yada yada, if you happen to own a horse, don’t let it near me unless you’d like it beaten to death and beyond.

Anyway ladies and gentlemen, this is the top player that San Beppe was trying to sign in the summer of 2012.

Inter did make it INTEResting at least, towards the end (see what I did there?). Indeed, this lack of a perfect afternoon has become too common of a theme this season for my liking. Yet another defensive lapse of concentration resulted in a Rolando goal at the 72’ mark, and Inter was able to keep the pressure on for the next several minutes. While remaining the undisputed reigning champions of Italy, let’s be honest — these types of mistakes are the reason Juventus are currently out of the Champions League.

Marco Storari 6.5 - With Gigi Buffon suspended, Storari came in & whether it is his nervousness or the fact he isn’t Superman again brought a less than convincing defensive display. Not the guarantee he once was as Juve’s number two.

Andrea Barzagli: 7.0 - Unflappable as ever, whether covering his position or the mistakes of others, his calmness is needed in this team, especially in game like this. His absence was noted almost immediately after his substitution.

Leo Bonucci: 6.0 - Made a few first half errors, prompting the usual twitter meltdown that rarely follows anyone else’s blunders.

Giorgio Chiellini: 7.0 - Back after injury & suspension, and how! The heart of the team was beating strongly tonight, a heart epitomised by the big number three. An solid display in defence punctuated with a goal, does it get any better?

Stephan Lichtsteiner: 7.5 - Back at his trolling best, who else would you like to see on the score sheet but the Swiss international? He lives for this stuff doesn’t he?

Arturo Vidal: 7.5 - After a few subdued performances from the Chilean, he was bang on form tonight, grabbing a goal while completely bossing the Nerazzurri midfield.

Andrea Pirlo: 7.5 - Some days, Pirlo leaves you completely out of superlatives. Today was that day, that was THAT pass!

Paul Pogba: 7.0 - Encouraged to shoot on sight by a crowd hoping for another Pog-BOOM, the young Frenchman was composed for most of the match, making very few errors.

Kwadwo Asamoah: 7.0 - The Ghanaian was the player sacrificed in the last game to allow Storari to come on, but showed here just how vital he has become, balancing Lichtsteiner’s forward bursts brilliantly & dominating his side of the field.

Carlos Tevez: 7.0 - The Juventus number ten did everything you could ask of him tonight in a performance that shows the difference between these two sides. Even Juve’s most gifted players are engaged & work for the good of the team.

Fernando Llorente: 7.0 - fter saving a vital point with a wonderful header v Lazio, tonight we saw his full repertoire. Incredible skill in holding the ball up & finding team-mates in a way very few other strikers can.

Antonio Conte: 8.0 - (John again) Firmly to blame for the elimination in the Coppa Italia at the hands of Roma, Antonio Conte’s spirit showed itself in his players last week in Rome against Lazio, and again today. Although the lack of concentration is a continuing concern, Conte made himself a presence on the sideline. Case in point, when Paul Pogba — subject to speculation of massive bids from richer sides on the continent began to lose concentration — Conte made sure he heard it from the touchline. Pogba obediently responded. I don’t think the young Frenchman would respond so positively to just anyone.


ANALYSIS WRAP-UP by John Cascarano

It’s amazing how quickly things change. From 2007 to 2010, Inter enjoyed a run as kings of Italy that would have seemed unprecedented just months prior. That they arrived there on the back of a scandal that was not, or worse a conspiracy to place them towards the top, is telling — considering where they were immediately before and where they’ve been since. Now Juve are on pace to win their third consecutive Scudetto this side of World War II, and all seems right with the world right now. The Old Lady entered today 23 points ahead of those slithery snakes from Milan, the largest pre-game gap at any time in the 3-points for a win era. Now 26 points out of first place, Inter are not even in Europa League zone at present. Having avoided a January funk for the first time in years, Juventus are firmly in the driver’s seat and can afford to put some eggs into the Europa basket.

This is now Inter’s 100th loss all time against Juventus. But who’s counting?

Derby romp underlines
gulf between Juve and Inter

TURIN, Italy -- The 162nd Derby d'Italia between Juventus and Inter Milan proved to be no contest on Sunday night as the Bianconeri extended their lead over Roma at the top of Serie A to nine points with a 3-1 win in a one-sided encounter.

More pertinently, though, they underlined a gulf which has opened up between them and their old rivals.

In November 2012, Inter arrived in Turin to face a Juventus side unbeaten in 49 games, a run which spanned three seasons. The Bianconeri had never lost a single Serie A game in the Juventus Stadium, either. Until then. A brace from Diego Milito and a late Rodrigo Palacio goal cancelled out Arturo Vidal's first-minute opener to break both records and thrust Inter into the race for the title.

It proved to be a turning point in both teams' season, albeit not as you would have expected. Inter won just seven more games and slipped to a ninth-place finish while Juve won 17 and secured a second straight Scudetto with, all said, a 33-point advantage over the Nerazzurri.

This weekend a similar gulf existed prior to kickoff. Twenty-three points separated the two sides coming in, and only 21 games had been played. The gulf between the two sides appears to be growing rather than reducing.

Sunday's comfortable defeat was not in the script Inter president Erick Thohir was reading when he took control of the club last November. Only seven points separated the two clubs then, while some Inter fans still harboured dreams of a serious challenge for the Scudetto. His fanfare arrival, ending 18 years of Massimo Moratti rule, was met with muted enthusiasm -- muted because the prevailing mood was one of disappointment at Moratti's departure even though Thohir's "big business" talk still struck a note.

Now, his initial promises of Champions League glory within three years ("We'll be in the final in Milan!") seem more misplaced than a blue and black flag in the Curva Sud of the Juventus Stadium. Inter fans have grown sick of the word "business." The only business they want to see their club doing is on the field, yet they are not delivering on either front.

Still reeling from the mere thought of a planned (and failed) Fredy Guarin-Mirko Vucinic swap between the two clubs, Inter's fans are questioning more than ever Thohir's business sense -- the arrival of Hernanes from Lazio has done little to placate them. Meanwhile, Juve took Pablo Daniel Osvaldo on loan until the end of the season, from right under the noses of Inter, who were so keen on the Italy forward when he left Roma for Southampton in the summer. With five strikers already on the books, that seemingly unnecessary move looks like Juve teasing Inter in much the same way they did on the field.

The halftime score line of 1-0 to the hosts may not have expressed it so vividly, but it was a monologue. Carlos Tevez could have given Juve an early lead like Vidal's in 2012, but Samir Handanovic kept him out twice before Giorgio Chiellini eventually hooked the second rebound over the bar.

Met with a standing ovation each time he approached the corner flag to take a set piece, Andrea Pirlo then conjured up one of those typical passes which nobody else sees to put Stephan Lichtsteiner in for a diving header, one which he guided expertly and accurately beyond Handanovic's reach. After 15 minutes, it was 1-0.

You could be forgiven for not noticing that Juve No. 1 Gianluigi Buffon was suspended and replaced by Marco Storari. Not even when Rodrigo Palacio had the goal at his mercy five minutes before the interval did the calendar pin-up need to intervene. It was a trend which continued into the second half, one that saw the hosts finally transform their superiority into goals and do so with a nonchalance which suggested they could have added even more.

In fairness, Inter did give them a helping hand, too, allowing Paul Pogba first to power his way through and then failing to clear the danger as Chiellini bagged his third goal of the season. It was Pogba again who proved too much of a handful for the Nerazzurri back line, spreading fear before Vidal struck Juve's third with the Inter back line caught watching the ball.

Rolando did pull a goal back for Walter Mazzarri's men, his shot taking a deflection on its way past Storari in the 72nd minute. Vucinic then tried to rub further salt in Inter's wounds, striking the post late on against a side he could have been lining up for Sunday night. That might just have been too much for the Nerazzurri faithful to take, and so it was another 3-1 between these two historic foes -- just like the one in November 2012, only much has changed since that night.

Twenty-six points is now the gap separating them in the standings, and it's a gap that seems most likely to grow. It seems like the only way Inter can get close to Juve these days is in an alphabetized list.

Juventus unstoppable as they
pick up Derby d'Italia win

When it comes to the Derby d'Italia, tension envelopes the surrounding environment highlighting the tense relationship between the two rivals. Two sides with two sets of passionate fans vociferously hating one another, a victory is of the utmost importance in this match of all matches. For Juventus, a win was all they could envisage and victory was exactly what they managed when they defeated their foes 3-1 to demonstrate domestic invincibility.

Fluid, composed and rehearsed, the Old Lady quickly demonstrated why she's the best there is in Italy. With the wing-backs pushing forward to offer alternatives and Andrea Pirlo boasting impeccable vision, the home side needed only 15 minutes before a perfect Stephan Lichtsteiner header opened the scoring.

Always looking for that perfect penetrative pass and using their strength to hold up the ball to bring in the others, Juventus displayed teamwork and efficiency, making their time on the ball count. Inter, meanwhile, despite possessing the ball quite often, struggled to create opportunities.

The problem with Walter Mazzarri's sides is that they often prioritise defence over attack. Sacrificing devastating attacking play to focus on defence isn't a problem per se, but it becomes one when the side in question is susceptible to shoddy defending. The only way one can forgive a cautious approach is if the side can keep the clean sheet, can hold off the opponent or can demonstrate strength and understanding at the back -- Inter failed on all occasions.

Sides should concentrate on their defence, but balance is the key and asking attacking players to sacrifice their talent going forward to focus on their weaknesses creates problems. Mateo Kovacic, for one, is not made to play so deep and it was obvious on Juve's first goal that he’s not the best when it comes to defending. What he does provide is ingenuity and intelligence going forward -- two qualities Inter lacked for much of the night. Rather than playing him further up the pitch and allowing him the freedom to express himself, Mazzarri opted to highlight the player's weaknesses instead.

Inter lacked the necessary ideas to go forward. In the first half especially, when the Nerazzurri were in possession and pushing forward, Juventus closed down the spaces well leaving them often opting to pass laterally or backwards. That vertical pass required was never quite found.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Palacio might as well have given the audience a perfect rendition of "all by myself". With his attacking teammates asked to play deep, there was little help afforded to the player when his side pushed forward, forcing him to do it all alone. Defensive errors seemed to be the only way for Inter to find a way through.

In the second half it looked like the away team attempted to remedy the situation by playing their attackers further forward but before they could even settle in, Juventus doubled their lead via a corner. Paul Pogba's ability to use his strength and hold up the ball allowed Giorgio Chiellini to strike and manage Juve's second with his right foot.

With Arturo Vidal managing the third, the Bianconeri demonstrated one key thing -- their desire to be the one who scored. Whether it be Chiellini's initial attempts and then his goal or Vidal striking from the knock down, there was real determination shown by the home side.

However, Inter managed a consolation goal and that goal in some way changed the dynamic of the game. For one thing, they felt more confident when attacking, throwing more men forward while Juventus lost Andrea Barzagli, and with him the composure the centre-back offers the side.

Juventus started to feel anxious and did not seem assured at the back. Allowing the Nerazzurri opportunities from set pieces, there were several occasions when the Bianconeri seemed to nod off for a few moments, losing concentration.

However, making the necessary changes, Mirko Vucinic came on and nearly made it four to show that regardless of what happened in the transfer market, he is always ready when called upon. Again, Inter were lucky defensively but it goes without saying, Juventus are simply on another level.

Scoring 25 goals in their last eight games, this is Juve's Scudetto to lose. Inter not only need to invest but more importantly, play a game that highlights the strengths rather than the weaknesses of their side.

Pirlo Merits Extension

Andrea Pirlo was magnificent on Sunday against Inter and proved once again why he deserves to receive an extension to his deal that expires in June.

Yuto Nagatomo fails to offer enough from the left side of Inter's formation, which could part of the reason as to why Walter Mazzarri signed Danilo D'Ambrosio last month.

Hernanes was unable to play on Sunday, but once his paperwork is cleared on Monday and he is ready to play for Inter, Walter Mazzarri must decide where to deploy the Brazilian.

Andrea Barzagli - Coped with the presence of Nagatomo easily. Looked to have suffered an injury in the second period though and had to be replaced.

Leonardo Bonucci - Kept an eye on Palacio but wasn't troubled by the Argentine's limited aerial ability. Almost set up a grandstand finish with what would have been a fine own goal.

Giorgio Chiellini - In the right place to slam home the second goal and was constantly a threat in and around the Nerazzurri area.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - Took his goal like a seasoned centre forward, guiding a diving header beyond Handanovic to set the hosts on their way.
