Anyone who thought they would give up their crown without a fight really knew nothing about Antonio Conte and his team. In the biggest Scudetto showdown of the season so far, the Bianconeri showed their determination to make it three-in-a-row. Ahead of the international break, it sounded like an alarm bell to any of their title rivals.

La Vecchia Signora started their game with Napoli like a caged beast which had been starved of food for a fortnight. They sunk their teeth into Rafa Benitez’s side with great gusto in the opening stages and got their reward after just a couple of minutes. Fernando Llorente was narrowly offside when he prodded the ball home, but the Turin side needed no second invitation to take control.

Not that the Partenopei went down without a fight, they had their chances to get back into the match but Gigi Buffon – the man some suggested was past his best – excelled himself in denying the visitors. Later in the game a typically pinpoint Andrea Pirlo free-kick and sweet swivelling finish from Paul Pogba put the outcome beyond doubt. It puts Conte’s men in the perfect position to carry out an overtaking manoeuvre at the top of the table once their players come back from national team duties.

“We have sent an important signal to those ahead of us,” said Pirlo in post-match interviews. “We are all up there – Roma are having a great championship but we have to worry about ourselves. After the Giallorossi drew we had to close the gap and we did it in the best way possible.”

“Napoli are a very strong team which can still improve a lot,” added Conte. “I am sure they are a team which will fight right to the end for the Scudetto. It will be a fight with them and Roma and then there are Inter and Fiorentina and maybe other teams.”

“To start a game against such a strong side as Juventus and go behind after two minutes changes everything,” said Benitez. “Up to the 74th minute the team showed quality and concentration. Then we saw two goals which showed the quality of their players.”

Those who had predicted a slowing of Roma’s pace got surprising proof of their wisdom against Sassuolo. The Giallorossi looked to be set for a Stadio Olimpico stroll when Alessandro Longhi thumped one into his own goal in the first half. But a personal duel between Adem Ljajic and Gianluca Pegolo saw the visiting goalkeeper thwart the Serbian on at least three occasions. When Rudi Garcia’s men failed to extend their lead it was up to special agent Domenico Berardi – owned by Juve – to level the match deep in injury time.

“When we did not get the second goal this could always happen,” admitted the Roma boss. “You cannot relax when you are just one goal ahead. But we are still in first place and we played a good game – more so in the second half than the first. That is the important thing for me – we are playing well and as long as we are doing that we will win games.”

For other teams, however, winning matches has become the hardest thing of all. For few sides is this more true than Max Allegri’s Milan. With Mario Balotelli banned again, the closest they came to downing Chievo was a Robinho shot which bounced off the post. Their tactician took the goalless draw – and the increased questions over his future – in philosophical style.

“I am the Milan Coach – if the club thinks they need another one they will let me know,” he said. “We created a lot and conceded not much. I couldn’t have asked any more of my players. Sometimes scoring a goal and winning a game can change people’s opinions of a team.”

It is the same story for Delio Rossi at Sampdoria who was surrounded by rumours that he would be shown the door after away defeat to Fiorentina. A quick-fire Giuseppe Rossi double looked to have given the Viola an easy victory but they trembled a little after Manolo Gabbiadini narrowed the gap. Vincenzo Montella’s men just held out to keep themselves in the European debate.

Verona tumbled out of that equation a little with their defeat at the hands of back-in-form Genoa, but Inter kept up a good pace thanks to a Saturday night win over Livorno. Their task was made easier by an unfortunate blunder from visiting goalkeeper Francesco Bardi who pretty much threw the ball into his own net to open the scoring. The fact that he is on-loan from the Nerazzurri, like much of the Tuscan team, only made it look worse. Yuto Nagatomo completed the scoring in a match which was also notable for the return of Javier Zanetti to action after his long spell out through injury.

Elsewhere, Lazio shared the spoils with Parma at the Ennio Tardini while two Daniele Conti thunderbolt free-kicks were enough for Cagliari to sink Torino. That victory allowed the Sardinians to pull clear of Bologna who were downed by a late Marko Livaja strike in a 2-1 defeat at Atalanta. Finally, there was some consolation for Maxi Lopez who was able to get his mind off widely-reported relationship problems by giving Catania a rare win this season at home to Udinese. However, the Sicilians might still be separating from Serie A come the end of this campaign.

Italy chief: Replace hooligans with kids

The Juventus Stadium may not be half-empty when the two ends of the ground are closed for the upcoming visit of Udinese, if the president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) Giovanni Malago gets his way.

The gates to the Curva Sud and Curva Nord will be locked when Juventus host Udinese on Dec. 1, but Malago, after a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on Wednesday, believes there could be a way to open them -- to children.

"Opening all of the Curva closed due to racism and letting only children in is a fantastic idea," Malago said. "We need the clubs and the Lega (Serie A) to look into this from a regulatory point of view, but I like the idea a lot."

Fenerbahce set a precedent by letting only women and children into their league game with Manisaspor in 2011 after a pitch invasion during a preseason friendly led to a full stadium closure. Rather than playing behind closed doors, the Turkish Football Association only banned those it was sure had caused the trouble -- the men.

"It would be a great signal," continued Malago. "It would be like when we confiscated assets from the Mafia."

Letta would like to go even further to improve the matchday experience at Serie A games by approving new rules to facilitate clubs in their attempts to build new or renovate old stadiums.

At present, bureaucracy is hindering clubs from improving arenas, most of which were last enhanced ahead of Italia '90 and some of which date back even further since their last upgrade.

Juve led the way by rebuilding the former Stadio Delle Alpi while Udinese have finally started work on renovating the Stadio Friuli after years of planning and wrangling.

Lazio, Roma, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Sampdoria are just five clubs who have expressed their desire to build new grounds, although strict rules and drawn-out building application processes mean plans are pencilled on paper, but no more than that.

Juve to fill Curvas with kids

As it stands, those two sections of the ground – behind each goal – will be closed to supporters as a punishment for territorial discrimination chants aimed at the city of Naples during the 3-0 win over Napoli.

The Curva Nord will be closed for 90 minutes, while the Curva Sud will be shut for two games – thus will also be empty for the Sassuolo tie.

However, after an initiative by Turin daily Tuttosport, those two parts of the arena may now be filled with kids instead of Ultras.

Juventus trio on the mend

The Giallorossi sit atop the table, a point ahead of Juventus, with 10 wins, two draws and no losses to their name.

However, the Morocco international maintains the current Scudetto holders and Napoli will be scrapping for glory all the way this season and stresses Rudi Garcia's men are simply focused on European qualification.

It's been 71 years since Livorno beat Juventus in Serie A, a 3-2 final in 1942. Despite the injuries, the suspensions and the many absences, the Old Lady will be hoping to extend that record in the match against Davide Nicola's side on Sunday.

The newly promoted side managed their promotion to the top flight largely due to their interesting blend of young talent and vital experience. While we can discuss tactics, strategies and formations, and we undoubtedly will, it's important to note that much of Livorno's success can be attributed to one man -- Davide Nicola.

A tactician who started his coaching career at Lumezzane, the same club where Mario Balotelli started out his playing career, Nicola's ability to psychologically inspire his players helped him create a side that simply won't give up, despite their inferior levels of talent and experience. He deploys eleven men desperate to fight and to avoid disappointment. It is their mental strength and willingness to conquer all that saw seen them pick up the necessary points to win promotion last season.

A fan of Juve boss Antonio Conte, Nicola admitted that "as a Coach, Conte is absolutely excellent. We all want to be at the same level as him." That is not simply because, in his view, Juve play with such fluidity, but because they face their challenges with enthusiasm. It is this mental fortitude and Conte's ability to motivate the squad that the current Livorno boss finds most appealing.

A pragmatic man, Nicola focuses on teaching his students how best to cope with real-life situations, improving their capacity to make the right decision when the time comes in a match. By telling them what they ought to be looking for and how their body should respond in any given situation, he limits the level of pressure a player feels during a game.

Training sessions are hard and the team is asked to focus on the attack, but remain cautious defensively. Defensive moves are practiced incessantly so that players are aware of their duties the moment they lose possession. Aware that keeping the ball is a difficult requirement in Serie A, Nicola focuses most of his training sessions on teaching his players how to move when they are without the ball, the defensive positions they must adopt and how to win back possession.

While it's tedious and difficult to learn all these teachings, the tactician is aware that he must keep the training sessions fresh and fun with speeches always delivered in a colourful manner. He wants his boys to enjoy themselves. How? "On our nights off, we all go out to eat pizza together," explains the tactician who says he loves nothing more than watching his players laugh and joke together.

On the field, Livorno were expected to play 3-4-1-2 with greater frequency this season but have opted to rely on the 3-5-2. They may struggle to keep the ball but they are effective at winning back possession.

Renowned for their stamina and willingness to double up on their opponents, they boast a certain balance in their style of play and can be very tactically intelligent and fluid.

Yet of course, they possess many flaws to their games and will need to be especially alert should they hope to contain Juve's attacking threat. With a somewhat fragile back-line and a weakness in dealing with anything in the air, they can be easily overcome. However, the Bianconeri would do well to stay focused for the entirety of the match against a side that does its best to please their tough coach.

As for Juventus, they always seem to perform well under pressure. Suffering an emergency situation at the back, it seemed Conte would opt for a three man back-line consisting of Martin Caceres on the right, Giorgio Chiellini in the middle and Federico Peluso on the left. However, according to Sky Sports reports on Friday, the tactician was seen testing midfielder Arturo Vidal in defence. Could he be chosen to play alongside Caceres and Chiellini at the back?

If so, then the midfield will be comprised of Simone Padoin on the right, Kwadwo Asamoah on the left and a central trio consisting of Claudio Marchisio, Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba. As for the attack, Carlos Tevez will take his place and will most likely be accompanied by Fabio Quagliarella.

A win is necessary on Sunday and the three points are as important as those picked up against Napoli. A confidence boost will be exactly what Conte's men will be looking for before their Champions League game against Copenhagen midweek. Time to maintain the winning streak.

The 26-year-old Chile international missed his country's encounters with England last Friday and Brazil on Tuesday, and as a result could have been declared ineligible to play for the Bianconeri this weekend because of the 'five-day rule', which states that a player cannot feature for his club for a minimum of five days if he missed international duty through injury.

Juve asked the Chile FA for special dispensation that would let Vidal play on Sunday but it refused, forcing the club to go straight to Fifa to request permission to play the midfielder.

Fifa has granted the request, which is a boost to Antonio Conte's men who are contemplating playing Vidal in defence as their backline is ravaged by injuries and suspensions.

Centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Leonardo Bonucci are suspended for the trip to Tuscany following the former's red card and the latter's fourth booking of the Serie A campaign against Napoli.

The Bianconeri have recovered magnificently from back-to-back defeats to Fiorentina and Real Madrid, with a fine run of form that has seen them close the gap at the top of the table to one point, as well as turn their Champions League destiny in their favour.

With such a high-quality squad, the Old Lady have many doubts and absentees through injury and suspension.

Antonio Conte will definitely be without Leonardo Bonucci and Angelo Ogbonna, both of who are suspended.

Juventus entered the international break playing as well as we've seen the play all season long. For a manager that has his team conveniently hit its stride in October and November, Antonio Conte has done it again and teams that have been in Juve's path the past five weeks have seen a different team than the one to begin the season.

And while Juve aren't beginning this post-international break period with as difficult a game (at Livorno) than they did the last time around (at Fiorentina), this is a different team than the one that showed up in Florence and proceeded to get smacked in the mouth during a second-half meltdown of unmatched proportions.

But that was then, this is now.

Juventus come out of the international break with plenty of missing pieces. They also come out of the international break just one point off the pace of Roma in the Serie A table. That might not have been the thing I imagined happening a month ago when everything seemed to fall apart within a couple minutes against Giuseppe Rossi and la Viola. But it proved to the perfect reality check Conte's squad needed. And since then, they've been getting back to being the team we're used to seeing.

So, gents, shall we continue what we've started? I'd be okay with that.

Remember when Juventus were giving up stupid goals that made you want to bash your head against the wall? Yeah, that was pretty annoying. HOWEVER....

With all the good Juve's defense has been doing before the international break, there's just one problem: The number of defenders eligible to play can be counted on one hand. Leonardo Bonucci? Suspended. Angelo Ogbonna? Suspended. Andrea Barzagli? Returned from international duty with Italy injured. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mauricio Isla? They're both injured, too.

It's obviously anything close to being the ideal situation. Just thank goodness for Juve having quality depth.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. Will the injuries and suspensions cause Antonio Conte to change formations?

A couple days ago I would have thought Conte shaking things up due to all the missing pieces might very well happen. Now? Not so much. The injury to Barzagli might have been the thing that keeps things the way they have been for Conte much of this season. Translation: The 3-5-2 probably isn't going to be temporarily scrapped due to all the injuries. And it's the logical way to go. If Barzagli was fit, Martin Caceres probably would have been at right back. But since there's no Barzagli on the list of call-ups for tomorrow's match, the options have become even that much more limited.

2. Will we get Arturo Vidal the midfielder or Arturo Vidal the makeshift defender?

It's been two years since we even had the thought of Vidal playing in defense pop into our head. But because of all the injuries and suspensions, having him play as a defender is a distinct possibility. And not just as a defender, but as the center man in Juve's three-man defense. Judging by how awesome Vidal is, I don't doubt he'd be able to handle it despite his lack of experience in that role. He was more than capable as a central defender in a four-man defense two years ago, so I'm sure he'll be able to handle things in the middle of a 3-5-2 formation. Why? Because it's Arturo Vidal.

3. Who starts alongside Carlos Tevez if Conte goes with a 3-5-2?

If I was suddenly transported to into Conte's head, we'd know the answer by now. But since I'm sitting in California instead of Turin, somebody else, it's just a guessing game at this point. Some folks are saying Fabio Quagliarella will get the start, others are thinking that Conte will keep things consistent and stick with the Tevez-Fernando Llorente combination that we saw for most of the last month. Whatever combination it is, it seems like we know one thing — Carlos Tevez will play from the start like he has pretty much every game this season.

4. Can Juventus keep the train rolling?

This is, of course, the big question — no matter what the starting lineup ends up being. Ever since Juventus lost in Madrid, they've been getting better. Steps forward are good. I like seeing this team taking steps forward. But sometimes you never really know with this team coming out of international breaks. They might be the same team that entered the two-week break, they might come out as flat as a board. We've seen an international break derail Juve's form before. And coming off a 3-0 thumping of Napoli, it would have been nice to see Juve line up a few days later and keep the roll going. The reality is, though, they've had to wait a couple weeks to get that chance.

Brace yourselves, Juventini: We may be watching most of Sunday’s match through our fingers.

The crisis in defense is such that Antonio Conte was considering switching to a 4-3-3, though at the moment he seems to be favoring the old 3-5-2, according to Sky Sport. Either way, Conte will be forced to put together a pretty radical, relatively ragtag unit in front of Gigi Buffon.

To recap: Leo Bonucci reached his yellow-card limit against Napoli, as we knew he would. Angelo Ogbonna was sent off in that match, so he too is disqualified. Meanwhile, Andrea Barzagli picked up a thigh strain in the Italy-Germany friendly on Friday and will most likely sit this one out; it would be foolish to risk him anyway with the crucial Champions League match with Copenhagen next week. In light of all this, Conte is apparently thinking of playing Arturo Vidal as the middle center-back between Martin Caceres and Giorgio Chiellini. He tested the arrangement out in practice, and there is no evidence to suggest that it was a wash.

Earlier this week, there were reports that Arturo Vidal would be forced to skip Livorno following his departure from Chile’s camp this week, thanks to FIFA’s “five-day-rule” which claims, according to Football Italia, that “a player cannot play a competitive game for his club if he’s been sent home from an international call-up.” However, FI report that FIFA have in fact cleared Arturo to play on Sunday. Despite still technically recovering from the injury sustained against Napoli, Vidal will be out there. Either Conte simply wants the best players available on the pitch, or he really doesn’t trust Federico Peluso as a center-back (nor should he).

On the wings, Mauricio Isla will be unavailable for the next two matches, as he sustained knee-ligament damage in Chile’s friendly with England. That means that Conte will probably start Padoin on the right wing (or in the worst-case scenario — dun-dun-DUN! — Marco Motta). Kwadwo Asamoah will start on the left wing, despite playing two intense sudden-death World Cup qualifiers with Ghana.

In central midfield, Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio will all start; who else possibly can, unless Vidal moves up from defense? If there ever was a match where the midfield was all-important, it will be this one; it should provide one of the few areas of stability for Juve on Sunday.

As for the attack: Carlos Tevez is a lock, as always. Plus, the most strenuous activity he engaged in outside of training was meeting the Pope, so he should be well-rested. The latest from Vinovo is that Fabio Quagliarella will partner with him.

Fernando Llorente is available on the bench, but Sebastian Giovinco is out, as the injury to his left foot has apparently flared up again. Meanwhile, Mirko Vucinic should be available off the bench, in what will either be his long-awaited return or an open audition for the January transfer window (it’s seems more and more likely to be the latter).

Conte is being careful on dual fronts: He needs to choose the best, most defensively airtight squad from the players available, but he also needs to monitor some players’ minutes in view of Copenhagen, which is the much more important match. No matter what, Juve simply cannot drop points to Livorno, especially not in this tight-race season.

The chemistry and choreography in defense might be missing at times on Sunday, but it’s not like Conte is hiring temps here; if Conte trusts his players implicitly, then so should we.

It’s not going to be pretty, but an undermanned Juve should still handle their business.

Massa to Ref Livorno Clash

Davide Massa of Liguria will preside over Juve’s trip to Livorno on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Mothership, Massa has a very small track record with the Italian champions: one match, to be exact. But it was a good one: Under Davide’s whistle, the Bianconeri dispatched Atalanta 3-0 thanks to Mirko Vucinic, Claudio Marchisio and Andrea Pirlo.

Let’s hope he calls a loose game for our makeshift defense’s sake. If the usual chemistry is missing or Conte’s tactical training doesn’t take for some reason, we may see some less-than-divine interventions on Sunday—especially with Captain Hook in the middle.

Massa’s linesmen will be Marco Barbirati and Simone Ghiandai. Fabio Galloni will be fourth official and might have to play defense for Juve in an emergency.
