A 4-3-3 Juventus for Real?

Tuttosport are claiming Juventus will line up with a 4-3-3 in Tuesday’s Champions League game against Real Madrid.

Boss Antonio Conte surprisingly fielded such a shape in Madrid during the 2-1 loss and, although he has since reverted back to a 3-5-2 in Serie A, he seems intent on fielding a trident attack again.

The Turin daily is suggesting Martin Caceres will be fielded as the right-back, with Leonardo Bonucci coming in for the suspended Giorgio Chiellini in the middle.

The midfield trio will be made up of Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal.

Anderlecht and Ajax have the youngest squads while JUVENTUS have the oldest,
but it appears that achieving the right blend of experience is the best recipe for success.

They say age is only a number, but as Ajax and Anderlecht have found out to their cost in the Champions League, it is apparent that it counts for a whole lot more.

Both sides have the youngest squads in the competition with an average of age of just 23-years-old, and it seems that the expectation and pressure that comes with playing in Europe is weighing heavily down on them.

Ajax, a club widely heralded for their wonderful youth academy, which has seen the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf and more recently Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart come through the ranks, are not enjoying the same success as they once did in the halcyon days of the '90s. Back then they reached consecutive Champions League finals, beating AC Milan in 1995, before losing to Juventus on penalties the following year. A 2-1 defeat to Celtic on matchday three this season rooted Frank de Boer's men to the bottom of Group H. But perhaps it is telling that only one player in that starting XI - 33-year-old Christian Poulsen - was over the age of 24 and the average age of that side was just under 23.

Viktor Fischer and Lucas Andersen, both 19, are the shining new stars of the Dutch side but are not at the same standard as previous academy alumni, while the sales of young, accomplished playmaker Christian Eriksen to Tottenham and Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld to Atletico Madrid in the summer, have done nothing to mitigate their Champions League woes.

Meanwhile, Belgian side Anderlecht are facing a similar situation to their Dutch counterparts, with inexperienced youngsters and a dearth of top quality players blighting their campaign. In the 3-0 and 5-0 defeats to Olympiakos and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively, coach John van den Brom fielded a side with an average age of only 22. Youri Tielemans at 16 years and 148 days became the third youngest player to play in the Champions League behind Alen Halilovic and Celestine Babayaro, while Dennis Praet, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba, all 19, who were in the squad, have yet to prove they can compete at this level. As a result the Belgians are yet to get off the mark, or even score a goal in Group C and have conceded 10.

But, of course, having older, more experienced players does not necessarily guarantee success either. Galatasaray, fielding a team with an average age of 29-years-old against Real Madrid on matchday one, were emphatically beaten 6-1; Czech side Viktoria Plzen also had an average age of 29 in their encounter with Bayern Munich and were thumped 5-0 on matchday three. And Juventus, who have the oldest squad average of all the Champions League teams at 28.6-years-old, have taken two points from their opening three games in Group C, which features Madrid, Galatasaray and Copenhagen.

It seems that an appropriate blend of youth and experience can help facilitate the quest for glory if previous winners of the tournament are anything to go by.

Last season's successors Bayern have young players such as David Alaba, Toni Kroos and Xherdan Shaqiri complemented by older talents like Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben which brings the squad's average age up to 26.

Borussia Dortmund, whom they beat in the final this year, have exciting talents like Robert Lewandowski, 25, and Marco Reus, 24, while goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller, 33, helps to take the squad average up to 25.

Real Madrid, who are targeting la Decima, have an average of 26 years, while rivals Barcelona, who recently won the tournament in 2009 and 2011 are slightly older at 27.

This is also the case for the two Manchester clubs, United and City, both of whom had an average of 27-years-old. Arsenal are slightly younger at 26, and 2012 winners Chelsea are older at 28 years of age. French champions Paris Saint-Germain have an average of just under 26.

The age of players alone cannot be a determining factor as to the success of the club, as the quality of player, tactics, coach, and the ability to play as a team are also key concerns, but what it does show is that teams who are heavily reliant on young players at this level can struggle with the demand and expectations placed on them as Ajax and Anderlecht know only too well.

Luka Modric believes Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to be mentioned alongside Real Madrid greats Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas.

Juventus attacker Carlos Tevez has insisted that he is not envious of Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Tuesday's Champions League encounter against Real Madrid.

The Portugal international has been in sublime form this campaign, netting 20 goals in 15 appearances, yet Tevez sees no reasons to be jealous.

"Ronaldo is a great player, but I've got nothing to be envious of," the Argentine attacker stated at a press conference.

Tevez then went on to highlight the importance of Tuesday's game for Juventus' Champions League ambitions and stressed that they cannot afford to spill points again following their difficult start in Europe.

Conte turns up heat on referees

Juventus coach Antonio Conte is turning up the heat on referees as he says despite the controversial encounter with Real Madrid he is willing to keep his faith in officials.

The Bianconeri boss was left bemused on Champions League matchday three when Real Madrid received a penalty and defender Giorgio Chiellini was later dismissed in the 2-1 defeat to Madrid.

Manuel Grafe, the referee at the Santiago Bernabeu in that game, has reportedly since been dropped from officiating in matches of this significance, and Conte hopes for an improvement in refereeing when the sides meet at Juventus Stadium on Tuesday.

"Refereeing decisions affected the game in the first tie. But referees make mistakes like everyone does," the 44-year-old told a press conference.

Juventus fans are preparing to hand Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo "a special welcome" after a controversial clash at Santiago Bernabeu on Champions League matchday three.

Giorgio Chiellini was dismissed after allegedly elbowing Ronaldo in the face in the second half of the match, which Madrid eventually won 2-1, much to the anger of the Bianconeri support.

And Goal Italy was at hand to ask some of the die-hard Juve supporters how they plan to welcome the 28-year-old.

"Cristiano Ronaldo will be greeted with boos," said Lorenzo Brigidi, head of the Juventus fan club Doc Orcia Valley.

"Football is a sport where honesty and fairness are valued. A player can be a technical phenomenon, but Juve fans like players who are complete."

Although he has reverted to the 3-5-2 shape in Serie A, he is expected to go with the 4-3-3 he opted for during the 2-1 Champions League loss in Spain two weeks ago.

“We’ll see, we could even change shape during the course of the game.

Tevez keen to end CL drought

'We're in for an interesting match'

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that his side are in for ‘an interesting match’ when they face Juventus tomorrow.

Los Blancos travel to Turin to play the Bianconeri in the Champions League on Tuesday, and the Italian tactician has praised the Serie A side, as well as Antonio Conte.

“I think it will be an interesting match. We know that Juve will play with plenty of intensity, at a high tempo, and we will need to be at our best to match them,” he told a Press conference.

Real Madrid will be assured of their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a win in Turin against Juventus on Tuesday night.

They sit top of Group B with maximum points from their three games, with Galatasaray five points back in second and Juve seven behind in third.

On Monday morning Carlo Ancelotti announced the 22-man squad which would travel to Italy to try and get the job done.

The only notable absentee was Fabio Coentrao, who was forced off against Rayo Vallecano at the weekend with an injury.

Xabi Alonso's inclusion was the good news.

Taken off as a precaution at half-time in Vallecas on his return to the starting line-up, the team suffered in the second half as a result.

Alonso's absence has been one of the major factors in Ancelotti's inability to strike the right balance in midfield—his comeback only strengthened that point. It is now the Italian coach's job to decide who best fits into the side next to the former Liverpool midfielder.

Sami Khedira has been his favoured pick in the middle of the park this season, while Luka Modric has arguably been the most impressive individually.

Ancelotti has also confirmed it will be difficult to fit Alonso and Asier Illarramendi into the same midfield, via Marca.

At the back, Coentrao's absence means Marcelo will play at left-back, while on the other side Alvaro Arbeloa could come in for Dani Carvajal—the two have been rotated of late.

In the middle Raphael Varane may return to partner Sergio Ramos.

Further forward the normal case of four from five may become four from six, with Luka Modric an option to make a three-man midfield.

That would mean Isco could be left to his thoughts on the bench again.

Let us rewind this story to a little less than a year ago. Back to Nov. 20, 2012, to be exact. Juventus found themselves in dire need of points and the (supposed) top team in the group was coming to Turin. Juve were coming off a so-so showing over the weekend, but it didn't matter — everybody knew what was at stake.

That game, Juventus vs. Chelsea at Juventus Stadium, not only saw Juve leapfrog the then-Champions League holders, but also made us all forget about the way the group stages started. It was a vintage showing. Juve not only beat the defending champions, but absolutely crushed them. It was, hands down, one of the best games of the Antonio Conte era in Turin.

With that, we have this: The more things change, the more things (kinda) stay the same.

Real Madrid comes to Turin with Juventus sitting in third behind Los Blancos and Galatasaray. Sound familiar, doesn't it? It should. Juve may have one more game to play with compared to when Chelsea rolled into town for Round 2 a year ago, but the situations are still a lot alike. Conte's squad needs points in the worst possible way. Two draws and a loss in three games is all to show for Juve's Champions League campaign thus far. On the other hand, Carlo Ancelotti's men are in the driver's seat in Group B with a full nine out of nine points.

Quite the differing situations, isn't it? Real wins, they're in the knockout stages; Juventus wins, they're heading into their final two group-stage games against Copenhagen (home) and Galatasaray (away) with a much better chance of advancing than before. GOOD NEWS

What did the first time around against Real Madrid do? It proved a point. It showed us that Juve can rise to the occasion when things aren't going well and hang with the big boys. Even with a loss, it helped begin a new run of improvement for a team that just a few days earlier got absolutely stunned in Florence. It brought confidence back, it brought a sense of belief back, it showed us they hadn't lost their hunger. Other than getting three points and putting them in your pocket for the trip home, you can't ask for much more than that.


BAD NEWS

Surprise, surprise! Juve will be missing key players tomorrow night.

Conte will be without two of his top defenders tomorrow night, with Giorgio Chiellini being suspended after his undeserved red card and Stephan Licthsteiner won't take part because the injury he picked up last month won't seem to go away. The same goes for Mirko Vucinic.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. Antonio Conte has to go back to the 4-3-3, right? ...RIGHT?

Sure, it was a loss in Madrid, but you can't blame it on the way Juventus played. The shift to the 4-3-3, one of the formations that helped Juve win the first of their two straight Scudetti, had a whole lot to do with the team's performance. Based on that, Conte has to deploy the same tactics...right? It would only make sense. Like Ivo said in his Juve-Madrid recap two weeks back, having something other than the 3-5-2 will do Conte a whole lot of good going into the future.

2. If Juve go to the expected 4-3-3, who's the other winger?

I think it's safe to say Claudio Marchisio isn't a winger and will never be one. That's not breaking news. That's news we've known for years and years on end. But he was deployed as a makeshift winger in Madrid instead of playing behind the Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente like some rumors before kickoff were saying would happen. Might Conte go in the same direction with Marchisio out wide? I have no idea, but it kinda seems like that will be the case. If Conte liked what he saw, then I wouldn't expect him to change.

And there's also the trickle down effect. If Marchisio is out on the wing, then who plays in the center of the midfield will be a moot point. But if Conte decides to go with somebody like Sebastian Giovinco or Mr. Champions League aka Fabio Quagliarella in a more attack-minded trident, then that's a whole different matter entirely.

3. Whether Juve will be able to set the tone early on.

The stadium will be electric (more on that later), that's pretty much assumed at this point. The crowd will be ready to go from the opening whistle, and so will Juve if they want to come away with all three points. This won't be one of the relegation battlers Juve have faced the last couple of weekends where a sub-par effort might be able to get the job done. No, no. If Conte's men come out flat, Real Madrid will make them pay for it. That's what good teams do. What made Juve successful in Madrid? They were able to play their game — one for all and all for one common goal.

4. The performance of Juve's improving defensive unit.

I could basically write what I did last time about the attacking threats Real Madrid have. Cristian Ronaldo, Angel di Maria, Gareth Bale — the names are right there in front of us. But you wanna know how many goals Juve have given up since their visit to Madrid a couple weeks ago? Zero. The defense, for the most part, has gotten their act together since the second-half meltdown against Fiorentina on Oct. 20.

But the catch is this: No Chiellini, no Lichtsteiner. No exactly what you want to hear going into such an important game.

5. The atmosphere at Juventus Stadium.

Much like the squad itself, the Juventus Stadium crowd has done its part when the occasion calls for it ever since the doors opened in 2011. Keeping with the Juve-Chelsea references, I remember sitting at home watching the game on television and the crowd noise was so loud before kickoff you couldn't even hear the Champions League anthem played over the speakers. And as much as I love listening to "THE CHAMPIONS!!!" over and over again, it was deafening inside the crown jewel of Italian stadiums. It only got better as the game — and the goals — went on.

And if Antonio Conte wants it to be rowdy and as loud as it can be possibly be against Real Madrid tomorrow night, then that's exactly how it should be.

Fernando Llorente has insisted that Juventus cannot afford to make any mistakes in Tuesday's Champions League game against Real Madrid.
