Juventus paid for defensive errors, as they were trailing Roberto Mancini’s Galatasaray, winning and eventually held to a 2-2 draw in Turin.

In the other Group B game, Real Madrid thrashed Copenhagen 4-0 and go four points clear at the top.

Carlos Tevez shook off an ankle injury to start with Mirko Vucinic, while Andrea Pirlo returned after he was rested for the Turin Derby. Galatasaray sacked Coach Fatih Terim due to a 6-1 defeat to Real Madrid and a contract dispute, so Roberto Mancini made his debut just two days after signing a three-year contract. Having barely even met the squad, he dropped Burak Yilmaz in favour of lone striker Didier Drogba, ex-Inter man Wesley Sneijder and former Juve flop Felipe Melo. Hamit Altintop and Eray Iscan missed out.

The pressure was on Juventus to win after a surprise 1-1 draw away to FC Copenhagen, but it was a relatively cagey start. Paul Pogba attempted an audacious overhead kick from Arturo Vidal’s cross, but barely made contact with the ball.

Gigi Buffon needed quick reactions and used his foot to deny a Drogba strike at the base of the near post, as the ex-Chelsea man was going to score from the tightest of angles. Bruma also tested Buffon, though this smother was simple.

Vucinic ran on to a wonderful Pirlo ball over the top, but stumbled and then collapsed clutching the back of his leg. The Montenegrin limped off for Fabio Quagliarella, while in the same move Semih Kaya also picked up an injury.

Quagliarella could easily have won a penalty with practically his first touch, as he prodded a Tevez pull-back wide from close range due to a shove in the back by fellow substitute Gokhan Zan.

Tevez and Stephan Lichtsteiner shots were charged down in the box, as the Bianconeri began to pile on the pressure.

However, just as Juve seemed ready to find the breakthrough, it was Galatasaray who opened the scoring. Leonardo Bonucci’s dismal backpass was intercepted by Drogba and Buffon came tearing out, but the Ivorian kept his cool to deposit into an empty net. It was Drogba’s third career goal past Juventus and for the fifth time this season conceded the first goal.

Tevez fought back immediately, his scorching strike on the turn whistling just wide, but Sneijder also volleyed well over from a promising position. Kwadwo Asamoah’s powerful effort was straight at ex-Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and Quagliarella did the same when redirecting Lichtsteiner’s cross from point-blank range.

Lichtsteiner also picked up a muscular problem on the stroke of half-time, so made way for Mauricio Isla after the break. Vidal and Asamoah fired opportunities off target, then Tevez aimed straight at Muslera after a splendid turn.

Pirlo and a Vidal volley from a corner sailed over the bar, while a crucial tackle stopped Quagliarella going clear on goal.Vidal aimed another long-range strike that scared Muslera and Emmanuel Eboue’s sliding challenge stopped Pogba pulling back from the by-line for Quagliarella.

Antonio Conte had to take a risk and threw on Fernando Llorente for Bonucci. It was his Champions League debut and he almost scored with his first chance, getting between centre-backs to nod an Asamoah cross just over the bar.

Juventus were awarded a pretty soft penalty when Quagliarella made the most of a mistimed Nordin Amrabat challenge, going down easily. Vidal stepped up and blasted a powerful spot-kick under the bar to draw Juventus level. Ex-Inter Coach Mancini smiled ruefully on the touchline when the referee pointed to the spot, but it was an entirely avoidable challenge from his player.

Llorente had the ball in the net, but it didn’t count because Tevez was offside in the build-up. However, moments later Juve did take the lead, as Pirlo whipped in a cross from the right that Quagliarella nodded in from six yards. It was his second goal in as many Champions League games this season.

However, Juve were still celebrating when Galatasaray got back on level terms. There was a visible gap in the Bianconeri defence’s right flank where Umut Bulut had time and space to control a Drogba knockdown and fire past Buffon.

Llorente toe-poked wide when a Tevez effort ricocheted into his path in stoppages.

Roberto Mancini enjoyed an impressive start to his Galatasaray career thanks to a 2-2 draw away to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Didier Drogba put Galatasaray in front before late goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella looked to have given Juventus all three points.

Umut Bulut's dramatic leveller, though, ensured that Mancini's tenure began with an encouraging performance and result in Turin.

Antonio Conte made the surprising decision to leave Fernando Llorente on the bench as Stephan Lichtsteiner, Andrea Pirlo and Mirko Vucinic all came into the starting XI.

Mancini was in the dugout against his boyhood club after joining Turkish giants Galatasaray on a three-year deal on Monday. The former Manchester City boss wasted no time in making changes, with six players coming into the first team, including Albert Riera and Felipe Melo.

Mancini went with a five-man midfield after Galatasaray lost 6-1 to Real Madrid in their first Group B match and it was causing plenty of problems for Juventus, who had to use the long ball to try and break through the organised visitors' defence.

Drogba gave the visitors the lead in the 36th minute when a poor back pass from Leonardo Bonucci left Gianluigi Buffon stranded and the former Chelsea striker nipped in to place the ball into the back of an empty net.

On the stroke of half-time, Quagliarella could have scored when he found space at the near post but Fernando Muslera was alert to thwart the danger.

Juventus continued to struggle in the second half and Conte introduced Llorente as he looked to find a way back into the game.

Conte's men got their reward in the 78th minute when Quagliarella was brought down by Nordin Amrabat and Vidal coolly stepped up before smashing the resulting penalty into the top corner to give Muslera no chance.

Galatasaray lost their momentum and the home side capitalised when Quagliarella got on the end of a perfectly-weighted Pirlo cross to head home in the 87th minute.

With the home crowd still celebrating Quagliarella's goal, Galatasaray struck back immediately and pulled a goal back from the kick off.

Drogba's flick on was met by Bulut who got enough power on his shot to guide it past Buffon in the Juventus goal.

Carlos Tevez and Llorente went close late on for the Serie A champions, but they failed to deny Mancini a dream start.

Mancini earns late draw in return to Italy

Galatasaray scored a late equalizer to snatch a point against Juventus at the Juventus Stadium on Wednesday night as the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw.

Auturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella overcame Didier Drogba’s opening goal, only for substitute Umut Bulut to snatch a late equalizer.

The early going was uncharacteristically impatient from the home side, as they launched a series of long passes that were easily dealt with by the visitors.

The only chance of note came from Giorgio Chiellini’s quick throw to Mirko Vucinic, who chested the ball back first time for Carlos Tevez, but the Argentine completely missed his volley attempt.

Didier Drogba tested Gianluigi Buffon on the 19 minute mark after a questionable challenge from former Bianconeri enforcer Felipe Melo won the ball high up the pitch. He then delivered a beautifully weighted pass through to the Ivorian but his heavy touch took him wide, and the subsequent shot from an acute angle was dealt with by the Azzurri number one.

On 28 minutes Quagliarella, who came on for the injured Vucinic, wanted a penalty after being bundled over while attempting to get on the end of Tevez’ cross, but the referee was not interested.

Roberto Mancini’s new side took a shock lead in the 36th minute through Drogba after a suicide back pass from Leonardo Bonucci, with the striker latching onto the short ball and rounding a stranded Buffon before side footing into an empty net.

Tevez came close on 40 minutes with a snapshot from distance that had Fernando Muslera scrambling, but the Uruguayan was not forced into action.

In first half injury time a run from Stephan Lichtsteiner down the right saw his cross met by Quagliarella who finally tested Muslera low at his near post, but the keeper pushed the attempt wide.

After the half the home side still looked laboured, while Galatasaray were impressive thanks to their workrate, typified by Drogba, who tirelessly dropped deep time and time again to help out his midfield in closing down dangerous opponents.

Antonio Conte decided to gamble on 68 minutes and replaced Bonucci with Fernando Llorente – and it almost immediately paid dividends as Kwadwo Asamoah’s pinpoint cross found him at the back post, but the Spaniard’s header flew inches over the bar.

Juventus finally had their chance on 77 minutes after Quagliarella was needlessly tripped by substitute Nordin Amrabat for a penalty – and Vidal stepped up to smash his effort into the top corner to equalize.

The visitors were looking tired and Juventus were beginning to find space and they eventually cracked – Andrea Pirlo’s angled cross finding Quagliarella unmarked to head home from 10 yards with only three minutes left to play.

However the Old Lady threw it all away only seconds later as Drogba won a high ball that fell into the overlapping run of unmarked Umut Bulut who drilled past Buffon.

Llorente had the final chance in injury time but had his effort deflected wide for the Bianconeri, as they dropped another two points in the Champions League.

With Real Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Copenhagen, the Bianconeri now sit in second place with two points from their first two matches.

Juventus have scored twice in the last 11 minutes against Galatasaray in the Champions League tonight, but still failed to beat Roberto Mancini's men in a dramatic finish to the tie in Turin.

Juve boss Antonio Conte picked an attacking lineup featuring Carlos Tevez and Mirko Vucinic but were restricted to keeping the ball deep early on, with Gala happy to sit and wait for chances to counter.

Paul Pogba failed to connect with an acrobatic volley in the box as Juve began to build momentum, while at the other end Didier Drogba forced Gianluigi Buffon into a smart save at his near post.

The Old lady suffered a setback midway through the first half as Vucinic was forced off after appearing to pull his hamstring, with Fabio Quagliarella introduced in his place.

Gala grew in confidence as the first half progressed and took the lead 10 minutes before the interval, with Drogba applying the finishing touch.

The veteran seized on a sloppy backpass by Leonardo Bonucci, controlling before tucking into an empty net to put Mancini's side in front.

Juve were restricted to strikes from range early in the second period, with Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal driving wide from distance.

Conte then threw caution to the wind, replacing a defender with a striker as Fernando Llorente came on for Bonucci with 20 minutes to go.

Llorente's physical presence soon had an impact as the Spaniard headed over from six yards, before the hosts won a penalty 11 minutes from full-time.

Quagliarella was the man who earned the spot kick after forcing a foul from Nordin Amrabat, with Vidal slamming into the top corner to restore parity.

Juve threw everything forward in the closing stages and looked to have snatched all three points late on, with Quagliarella heading home from close range three minutes from time.

There was still time for further late drama as Gala went straight up the other end to draw level, as Umut Bulut caught the visitors cold to turn home Drogba's flick and leave Juve ruing defensive errors.

Initial reaction and random observations

I can sit here and try to figure out why Juventus were so bad for about 70 minutes against Galatasaray. Or I could do what I've wanted to do for two hours of Juve-Galatasaray — repeatedly bash my head against the wall. But since the second option means I won't be able to do my job, here's a crack at Door No. 1.

First, though, I will turn to Fabio Quagliarella, who basically summed up what I want to say after Juventus' 2-2 draw against Galatasaray on Wednesday night.

"As the Coach said in his press conference, teams all defend against us now and hope to cause us problems on the counter-attack. It's tough when an entire squad is behind the ball, as you can't find space, but we have to work on countering this tactic."

That was exactly the case. You don't need to look to the second half when Galatasaray was packing at least eight guys behind the ball when Juventus were in possession — which was a good portion of the time. Juventus, for as mediocre as they were in the first half, had 10 shots. Some were blocked, some went wide, some even went on goal. What about Galatasaray? They had three. Essentially from the opening kickoff, Roberto Mancini stated his intentions — defend like hell and hit Juve on the counter.

That's what they did and come away a point in Turin to show for it.

But if Juventus actually defended in the subsequent minute after Quagliarella's go-ahead goal, maybe — or probably — we wouldn''t be having this discussion and instead praising Juve for getting three points when they're far from their best. Even though Juve were pretty craptastic before the 70th minute, I would have liked that a lot more than feeling the utter disappointment that comes with letting a win slip right through your fingers.

Random thoughts and observations

•Juventus missed Claudio Marchisio in the midfield today. Further proof he needs to play, from the start, more often than not. Yeah, I said it.

•The immediate response after Drogba's goal on the Twitter machine was to try and shell out the blame for who was at fault. Leonardo Bonucci's backpass was terrible, but the decision by Gigi Buffon to rush out of his goal might have been just as bad. That's something you expect from an inexperienced or young goalkeeper, not one of the best we've ever seen in the sport. It hasn't been a good couple of weeks for San Gigi. And with Juve not playing well as a whole right now, the mistakes he makes will be magnified even that much more.

•Mauricio Isla...where to begin. I was saying a lot of things about the announcers on Twitter during the match, but every bit of criticism Isla got was deserved. He was bad, really bad. How the hell he had a pass completion rate close to 80 percent is beyond me. Oh how I long for the Isla of Udinese fame.

•Amazing how Juventus finally woke up when Fernando Llorente came on in the second half. The shift in formation and tactics that came along with the Spaniard's introduction finally gave Galatasaray some difficulty. Even though they were still packing the box, Gala's defense showed some holes and Juve were able to take advantage of it. More of whatever that was, please, Mister Conte.

•I'm still trying to figure out how the hell a team that has been so good on defense the last two years allowed Galatasaray to score their second goal 71 seconds after Juve went ahead. Just baffling.

•If Juventus' defense plays anything close to like they have in recent weeks, Real Madrid are going to have a field day. Let's just hope that the Juventus that rose to the occasion in the group stages last year shows its head again. I'd approve of that.

Time For The Old Lady To Change?

After intense encounters with Lazio and Inter were followed by the Derby della Mole, it appeared a home match against Galatasaray would offer some respite. There is hardly a long and storied rivalry between Juventus and the Turkish giants, despite the presence of some familiar names in their lineup.

Wesley Sneijder never inspired the anti-Inter hatred reserved for Dejan Stankovic or Thiago Motta, while even Felipe Melo was always more likely to invite ridicule rather than intense anger. Then, on Monday, the Istanbul club appointed Roberto Mancini in place of Fatih Terim, the former Manchester City boss taking over from the same man he replaced in Florence back in 2001. Immediately a run-of-the-mill Champions League tie – the kind of game that makes many long for the old European Cup and its unseeded knockout format – was laced with more subplots than the final episode of Breaking Bad.


MATCH ANALYSIS by Adam Digby

Mancini, a man who claims he supported the Bianconeri as a child, could not mention the Old Lady in recent years without Juventini burning him in effigy. His managerial career is largely built on his success at Inter and is tarnished by that association in the eyes of anyone who holds la vecchia Signora dear. With little time to prepare for this clash, Mancini and Antonio Conte told their respective press conferences that they had no idea what to expect from Galatasaray.

His two day tenure meant it was a huge surprise to see Burak Yilmaz dropped and the formation switched to a 4-2-3-1, with former Juventus target Didier Drogba up front alone. The team also included ex-Lazio goalkeeper ‘Nando Muslera as well as Sneijder, Melo and Emmanuel Eboué.

It was a story of continuity for Juventus too as Gigi Buffon captained the side behind his usual back three of Andrea Barzagli, Leo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. In midfield, Andrea Pirlo returned alongside Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba as Claudio Marchisio took his turn on the bench. In attack Mirko Vucinic partnered Carlos Tevez with the Argentinean hardly needing to be asked twice if he was fit enough to face a team led by Mancini.

Sadly the first half performance was as familiar as the starting XI as a lack of intensity saw Galatasaray make the game seem all too easy. After a poor Pirlo corner, the Sûper Lig side broke quickly and Drogba pounced on a Bonucci mistake to open the scoring. Buffon could do little to prevent the goal, which only added to the misery for Juve who had seen Vucinic go off with an injury and many tickets go unsold due to their high price.

Mauricio Isla replaced Stephan Lichtsteiner at halftime but the second half began in much the same way as the first had ended, a disjointed and imbalanced showing that made the two-time champions look more like Pescara or Sassuolo. Conte’s Juventus has often taken on the air of an unstoppable machine but here it merely coughed and spluttered, lacking ideas, direction and cohesion.

Then, when a ridiculous ‘Conte out’ hashtag had made me vomit, the coach tore up the script and began what looked like a brand new page in his manual. In bringing off Bonucci for Fernando Llorente, the former Captain not only implemented a more suitable formation, but also forced his team to play through midfield more regularly. The Spaniard almost rewarded the switch immediately as his first touch was a header that narrowly went over the bar.

Quagliarella was then bundled over by Nordin Amrabat and Juventus were awarded a penalty which Vidal dispatched with his usual aplomb. Shortly afterwards, Tevez was correctly judged offside as Llorente put the ball in the back of the net. It seemed not to matter has Quagliarella headed home from a Pirlo cross but Isla was slow getting into position and gifted Galatasaray an equaliser that will drive Conte and co insane.


LE PAGELLE by Adam Digby

Gigi Buffon 6.0 – A night that will drive the captain to distraction as he conceded two goals despite having very little else to do. Faultless on the opening goal as he would have had to risk being sent off if he challenged Drogba.

Andrea Barzagli 5.5 - Dire showing from the usually unflappable Barzagli as he made a numbers of errors. Unlike his team-mates he started well and faded as the game wore on, although that was also down to the utterly inept performance of Isla who might as well have donned Galatasaray colours tonight.

Leonardo Bonucci 5.0 - Mancini’s tactical switch affected Bonucci more than any one as it forced him first to mark Drogba one-on-one, then to be left out of the buildup play when the Bianconeri were in possession. His awful back pass was indicative of his unease and Conte did well to pull him off when he did. Will need a confidence boost over the coming days to recover from this.

’68 Fernando Llorente 7.0 - Immediately made a difference which Conte’s defenders will say makes his introduction well timed while his detractors will say he should have arrived earlier. Perhaps the truth lies between the two, perhaps soon el Rey Leòn will rule again.

Giorgio Chiellini 5.5 - Without a player to mark, Juve’s best defender looked more than a little lost and perhaps, if he wanted to persist with 3-5-2 as long as he did, Conte should have rearranged the defence to isolate Chiellini on Drogba. Made three tackles and six interceptions but looked vulnerable to the pace of Bruma on the wing.

Stephan Lichtsteiner 6.0 - Sadly had to sit out the second half when his ability as an orthodox right back would have been a huge improvement on the impact made by Isla. Some excellent forays forward in the opening 45 minutes were sadly foiled by poor crossing. Hopefully his substitution will prove to be a precautionary measure as he is sorely needed with Martin Caceres still absent.

’46 Mauricio Isla 4.0 - Looked a shadow of his former self and can no longer hide behind a lack of fitness as an excuse. There is of course time for him to recapture his Udinese brilliance, but patience is at short supply in Turin.

Arturo Vidal 6.5 - Not at his best as the tactical mismatches caused the Juventus midfield to grow increasingly frustrated as the game wore on. Still made more tackles (4) than any of his teammates but took six shots, each seemingly more wayward than the last. Luckily his supreme skill from the penalty spot did not desert him.

Andrea Pirlo 6.0 - Another in a run of poor displays from the Bearded Genius despite being afforded far more space than he has seen in Serie A recently. Even with Galatasaray standing off him, Pirlo struggled for rhythm and gifted the visitors one or two good chances before making a perfect pass to Quagliarella for the second goal.

Paul Pogba 6.5 - Not the kind of eye catching showing we have quickly grown to expect from the youngster, particularly in the first half when he was clearly instructed to shadow Sneijder. In the second he made far more impact, with the intelligence and drive that have made him a fan favourite.

Kwadwo Asamoah 6.5 - Destroyed Albert Riera but failed to deliver the final ball. Still lacks that extra something at the highest level when deployed as a wingback, but his ability is clear. Should have been given a few free kicks after being fouled but the referee constantly waved play on.

Carlos Tevez 7.0 - Whatever it is Asamoah lacks, the Argentinean has it in spades. Looked a class apart even when the Bianconeri were trailing while he even had time to share a pre-match hug with Mancini. His tenacity in chasing loose balls and contest every challenge lifts the team and he is comfortably the best player in the squad right now.

’26 Fabio Quagliarella 7.0 - Quickly picking up the Zibi Boniek baton of delivering on European nights, the ‘scorer of great goals’ was at it again here. He has truly become Bello di notte 2.0.


Antonio Conte 5.5 - Deserves credit for rectifying the problems but many were of his own making. Slow to recognise Mancini’s switch was causing his side such issues and even slower to find the correct solution which, when it’s six foot five inches tall and sitting just a few seats from you is pretty poor. Must be close to calling time on Isla and the 3-5-2, but perhaps has too much invested in both to quit so soon.

As tempting as it is to take Joe Pagnelli’s advice and just embed the ‘expert opinion’ various people kept retweeting onto my timeline, the game deserves more than that. Mancini, so often criticised for his dire European record, deserves huge credit for his changes. Dropping Yilmaz was particularly brave but, as we have seen so many times before, playing a single striker against Juve’s back three means teams outnumber Juventus everywhere else on the pitch.

With little to do, Chiellini was regularly the spare man, making more passes (75) than anyone else on the pitch other than the metronomic Pirlo (76). Juventus had the majority of possession with 59% of the ball, but we’re forced into areas where they could not threaten the visiting side.

Despite having little time with his players, Mancini organized Galatasaray into a tight, compact unit which held a narrow shape and frustrated Juve in central areas. With Lichtsteiner injured, then both Isla and Asamoah playing poorly, the Bianconeri lacked the threat out wide to force them to adjust.

The gamble to introduce Llorente worked well, yet it was too little too late. It is something of a frightening prospect to consider, but Conte was out thought and out coached here by a man so often ridiculed by many. However, it was a night where Mancini’s natural caution worked and he will not be able to do the same domestically.

That will be of little consolation to those of us who only care for Turin’s Old Lady as she yet again attempts to overcome a poor start to a European campaign. With Real Madrid up next it must be hoped Conte can overcome the issues that have blighted Juve so far this season before it is too late. He has proven himself time and time again, often enough to have earned time and trust.

Drinking the poison chalice of mediocrity, Juventus played a miserable game on home turf, allowing Galatasaray to manage a vital away draw. Disinterested and imprecise in the first half, the Old Lady improved in the second as her opponent tired but failure to manage the lead for more than 71 seconds saw the Turks rejoice.

Once again we find the Old Lady reprise her role as Queen of the draws in Europe. Comfortable in her big bubble, she has failed to truly resurrect that intensity that took her so far in previous years. Imprecise passes, long balls to the top and failed crosses were really all Juve managed in the first half.

Possession was given away cheaply while the manner in which they conceded the first goal was abysmal. That moment was enough to provoke enough pain to last for months. This isn't quite what one expects from Antonio Conte's team. The predictability of their game and the incessant need to always attempt intricate passing in the box -- every required action took too long to be executed.

One need only watch the match between Arsenal and Napoli to realise the value of mobility in a team. There was no one capable of dragging players out position, so instead Juve were forced to deal with a huge number of men in the penalty box -- all in their rightful position; all eager to halt their play.

Moreover, there were never enough Bianconeri players to offer support in attack. Lacking in courage, the Old Lady was simply not good enough. To make matters worse, they lost two players to injury: Mirko Vucinic and Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Galatasaray played a tactically perfect game. Their perceived weak back-line proved effective while spaces were quickly shut down. Compact and defending in numbers, they reduced Juve to distant shots. They knew how to frustrate the attack that goes through the middle and were confident and comfortable on the ball.

In the second half, the home side played with more purpose and greater intent. As if possessed, their early start was full of purposeful shots and heavy attacking pressure. Unfortunately the quality was simply not there. Again it was taking too long to release the ball, to take the shot or simply pass to a teammate. The Old Lady was again reduced to shots from distance.

Nonetheless, new Galatasaray manager Roberto Mancini's men were barely doing anything more than defending. They used their strength in the air and clever anticipation to stop anything attempted by the opponent, but the pressure was increasing.

It was time to gamble and Conte had no option but to remove a defender, Leonardo Bonucci (who played an atrocious game) and replace him with a forward -- Fernando Llorente. The Old Lady were now deployed in a 4-3-3 formation and more desperate than ever to clinch a goal.

The game was somewhat transformed. The Spanish forward nearly managed a header only moments after his arrival on the pitch while Gala's tiring legs and split focus allowed Fabio Quagliarella more space to threaten.

The equaliser finally came, albeit via a penalty. A silly challenge was committed in the box and Quagliarella was awarded the penalty. Beautifully and powerfully struck by Arturo Vidal, the burden was lifted but Juventus didn't stop. They kept going hoping to score another to win the match. Three points had to be achieved considering the draw against Copenhagen.

A beautiful cross from Andrea Pirlo found Quagliarella and the Old Lady thought she won the game until 71 seconds later, when Galatasaray equalised via Umut Bulut.

If Juventus had done anything right this season, it was the manner in which they've controlled the game once in the lead. Maturity, possession and calm play has seen them close out matches in a sensible manner even if there were some nervy moments in Serie A. However, to not even manage a lead, not even for two minutes, proved disastrous.

The once solid Italian defence is now a wall that is easily penetrated and easily overcome. This is not only a worry for the Old Lady but for the Azzurri as well. When chances are squandered, they can somewhat be tolerated when the defence is tight. However, considering the ease with which the Juve back-line concede goals this season, the sudden lack of oomph in the final third is proving to be more of a problem than ever.

A dismal draw when a win was needed; Juventus must achieve something against Real Madrid in three weeks' time to keep Champions League dreams alive.

Gianluigi Buffon - Kept Drogba at bay in the first half with a smart stop but was perhaps a little rash when he rushed out for the Ivorian's opener. A disappointing evening though where he was beaten twice with not a lot else to do.

Andrea Barzagli - Part of the back trio that were rag-dolled by Drogba all evening. Barzagli was perhaps unlucky not to keep out the first effort but was beaten all to easily in the air on several occasions, a big part in Galatasaray's second goal.

Leonardo Bonucci - Produced an awful mistake that allowed Drogba in to open the scoring and never really recovered. Couldn't handle the former Chelsea man and was hauled off for Llorente as Juve chased the game.

Giorgio Chiellini - Struggled to deal with the presence of Galatasaray's front man and was also shown up for pace by the rapid Bruma on a number of occasions. Not his usual commanding self.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - Was deployed as more of an attacker in the first half and found space behind the back four multiple times, only to see his delivery let him down. Subbed at the break due to a knock.

Paul Pogba - The usual tricks and flicks didn't stick for the Frenchman tonight as he ended up on his backside a couple of times in the opening period. Produced a much more intelligent and driven display in the second half however.

Andrea Pirlo - Struggled to get any sort of rhythm going with his deliveries in the opening period and his lack of consistency saw the home side create few chances. Inevitably though played his part with an inch-perfect cross for the second goal.

Arturo Vidal - While dynamic as ever, the Chilean got frustrated along with a lot of his team-mates and began to take a number of wayward shots. Kept his cool however to dispatch the penalty.

Kwadwo Asamoah - His pace caused Albert Riera problems all evening and was perhaps unlucky on a few occasions not to pick up decisions when his pace had clearly undone defenders.

Carlos Tévez - A bullish performance as the Argentine showed tenacity in getting to loose balls and constantly looking for the breakthrough. Didn't play a big part in either goal but his contribution throughout allowed the comeback to happen.

Mirko Vučinić - The Montenegrin picked up an injury early on and had to subbed after pulling up with what looked like a hamstring problem.

Substitutions

Mauricio Isla - Came on for the effective Lichsteiner after the full-back picked up an injury but struggled to replicate his team-mate's performance.

Fernando Llorente - Made his presence known in the area and finally gave Pirlo and others a target in the box.

Fabio Quagliarella - Question marks over whether he made the most of the foul for the penalty kick. Nonetheless he was in the right place at the right time to put the Bianconeri in front, albeit briefly.

Néstor Muslera - Picked the ball out of his net twice, yet despite the number of shots the Italians managed, the Uruguayan actually had very few decent stops to make.

Aurélien Chedjou Fongang - Juventus attacked in the numbers down the wings but when the balls came into the middle, Chedjou and his central defensive partner were there to swat them away more often than not.

Hakan Balta - A very assured display, coping well until the latter stages where fatigue and the presence of Llorente finally gave Juventus a different attacking option that eventually reaped some reward.

Semih Kaya - Lasted all of 25 minutes when a clash with Vucinic saw his game cut short by injury.

Emmanuel Eboue - Looked strong in defence, showing good aerial ability and preventing crosses reaching the area time and again with well-timed challenges or decent blocks.

Felipe Melo - A confident display in midfield from the Brazilian who was happy to stretch his legs and get forward in attack when appropriate too, although the less said about his sole effort during the game, the better.

Selçuk İnan - Partnered Melo in the middle but sat back and allowed his Brazilian team-mate to make the most of attacking opportunities. Gave Pirlo perhaps more space than Mancini would have hoped at the beginning of the game.

Wesley Sneijder - A very subdued performance from the Dutchman who didn't link at all well with Drogba and left the Ivorian to lead the attack single-handedly. One wayward effort high and wide was all he had to show for a poor night's work.

Albert Riera - Slotted in at left-back but performed admirably in his defensive duties. Tured rapidly in the second half though after being given the run-around by Lichtsteiner in the first.

Didier Drogba - The Ivorian gave a masterclass in how to lead an attacking line by yourself. Could have already had one when he gave Galatasaray the lead and showed his aerial prowess to set up the second.

Bruma - Gave the Juventus defence a constant headache with his pace and direct running. Chose the wrong option on occasions when a better, or even slightly quicker pass, could have created game-winning opportunities.

Substitutions

Gökhan Zan - Came on in defence for the injured Kaya and formed a solid partnership with Chedjou as Juventus struggled to break down their opponents until the very late stages of the game.

Umut Bulut - Took his goal brilliantly, slotting the first time effort beyond Buffon and was almost played through for a second in stoppage time.

Nordin Amrabat - Was hugely unlucky to concede the penalty but it was a rash movement to make in the penalty area and he left the referee with little choice.

This was meant to be Galatasaray at their lowest ebb. It was supposed to be Juventus’ moment to shine in Europe. But Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw leaves the Italian champions needing another last-gasp surge in their bid to qualify from their Champions League group.

While both of these clubs boasted a place in the last eight of last season’s competition, there was no question who went into the game as favourites. Gala were beaten 6-1 at home by Real Madrid in matchday one and sit 10th in the Turkish Super League having won just a single game in the last six weeks. Juve were flying, Johan Wiland’s Superman efforts for Copenhagen a fortnight ago notwithstanding.

But Juventus were a long way off their best for far too long on Wednesday. In fact, in the final third they were abysmal. The midfield three made too many wrong decisions on the ball, with Paul Pogba having his worst game yet for the club. Fabio Quagliarella and Carlos Tevez found the Gala defence too big and strong to bisect when on the ball, and Mauricio Isla spent most of his time after replacing the excellent Stephan Lichtsteiner passing to red shirts instead of black and white ones.

The lack of clear decision making was upsetting in the least. This looked like the Juve of early 2011-12, the one that would dominate possession in Serie A but more often than not were drawing instead of winning due to the lack of a killer edge. That was supposed to have been overcome, but here they looked far too short on ideas as soon as Gala presented a united front defensively.

That said, they got themselves into a winning position but were made to pay for two awful moments at the back which deserve a thorough rethink on the training ground. Antonio Conte has done many things for Juve, but tactically they looked short, both defensively and up front. Only when he threw on Fernando Llorente for Leonardo Bonucci and sent the ball into the box quicker did their fortunes change.

After Bonucci’s dreadful backpass caught Gianluigi Buffon cold and allowed Didier Drogba to slot home, it looked for a long time as though Juve would never deliver any kind of response, but then Quagliarella sprang into action. Just as he had come up with a key equaliser in Copenhagen, the Italian striker first won the penalty from which Arturo Vidal levelled, then headed home a second which looked to have got the Old Lady out of jail.

But, crucially, criminally, they immediately switched off at the back and one simple ball caught them out, Drogba flicking on for Umut Bulut to fire home, with Isla nowhere to be seen when Andrea Barzagli needed cover after being drawn into the centre.

Just as happened last term, the Bianconeri have collected only two points from their opening two fixtures in Europe, but this time around there is one big difference. Twelve months ago they had already faced Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk, leaving them with a double header with Nordsjaelland to come.

This year’s Nordsjaelland are Real Madrid.

If Galatasaray can display the same character against Copenhagen as they did at Juventus Stadium, then the next two games could well yield six points for the Turks, and the pressure is now on Juve to come up with at least four points from their double-header with the Spanish giants in order not to leave them staring at a win or bust trip to Turkey in their final group game.

Juventus got out of jail before, but escaping a second time will be a very tall order indeed. Yet again, the Old Lady faces a long, tough autumn on her European travels. It should not have come to this.

Umut Bulut salvaged a point for Gala in the closing stages following Fabio Quagliarella's strike moments earlier, but Mancini - who was taking charge of the Turkish giants for the first time - believes Conte's men owe their point to the referee.

“In 200 passes per game there can be one that is misplaced. It’s just a matter of a split second of concentration, but that doesn’t mean we go on to the field with less aggression or adrenaline than in the last two years.

Leonardo Bonucci’s error gave away the opener, then Juve had fought back to lead 2-1 only for another defensive howler 60 seconds later.

“It was certainly disappointing, as we had managed to put the game back on track after an incident, which can happen. It’s a shame, as if you score at the 87th minute and then concede straight from the kick-off it is unusual.

“We have to be more attentive and clear-headed. The lads had tried so hard to get back into the match and I believe we achieved that in a deserved fashion.”

The Bianconeri also shared the spoils in Copenhagen, so have just two points to Real Madrid’s six, with the Turkish and Danish sides on one each.

Conte was shown the footage of the second goal and asked whether Mauricio Isla was at fault for his mistaken movement.

“I prefer to discuss tactical issues directly with the players and not on television. When we analyse the game, looking at positive and less positive things, we identify the errors.”

Juventus are becoming perhaps a little predictable and the negative approach of their opponents is having an effect.

“We can change something to surprise our opponents during the game, but these are our tactics. In the squad we only have Simone Pepe who can allow us to play 4-3-3. Based on the players at my disposal, I try to put them in the best condition to play.

“I don’t think I could use Stephan Lichtsteiner or Isla upfront in a 4-3-3. Unfortunately Pepe had this injury and we don’t have the right type of wingers in the squad.

“There are five strikers in the squad and they all play, so they all feel important. Whatever happens, people will complain about who I am leaving out, but I can’t use them all simultaneously.”

Having fallen behind to a first-half strike from Didier Drogba, the Bianconeri levelled a dramatic Champions League clash on 78 minutes when Arturo Vidal fired home from 12 yards out, after Quagliarella had tumbled in the area under a challenge from Nordin Amrabat.

Galatasaray boss Roberto Mancini labelled the decision to award a spot kick "strange" - but the man at the centre of the controversy dismissed the implication that he had dived.

"I moved the ball, he came in fast and then took me down," Quagliarella told Sky Sport Italia.

"There was contact, and I could not stay on my feet - it was a clear penalty."

Balotelli will miss the game through suspension, yet the 23-year-old's absence has not stopped Montolivo from comparing him to his fellow ex-Manchester City attacker.

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini admitted Friday that champions Juventus are not enjoying their best form ahead of Sunday's big match against AC Milan in Turin.

Juve, who are aiming to win their third consecutive Serie A title, are joint-second alongside Napoli with 16 points from six games, two points behind leaders AS Roma.

But their recent performances have not been impressive and they had the help of poor refereeing decisions in wins over city rivals Torino and Hellas Verona in their last two matches.

The two-time European champions have also made a stuttering start to their Champions League campaign, with draws at Copenhagen and at home to Istanbul side Galatasaray on Wednesday, when poor defending led to them being held 2-2.
