Conte demands more from Pogba

The trainer was not fully satisfied with the French youngster's outing despite
his sensational strike, and expects his side to maintain their concentration better.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte was critical of Paul Pogba even after the midfielder netted a fine goal in Saturday's 4-2 win over Sampdoria.

http://markting10.nl/

The Bianconeri raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal and Fernando Llorente inside the opening 25 minutes. An Andrea Barzagli own goal pulled a goal back for the visitors, before Vidal's second made it 3-1 and Manolo Gabbiadini's 70th minute strike kept Sampdoria in the game.

But Pogba had the final say with a stunning goal with 12 minutes remaining, but it still wasn't enough to earn the praise of Conte.

"Tonight Pogba could have done a lot better," the Italian told reporters. "I’ve certainly seen better performances from Paul.

http://markting10.nl/

"At times the goal fogs the vision of the whole game, but I get angry as people forget everything around it. I ask my players to keep their concentration to the 90th minute and tonight it was hard to kill the game off.

"We cannot dominate games and always have this anxiety from set-plays. Sampdoria’s goals came from corners, and we need to work on this. Hats off to them, they gave us great difficulty from set-pieces.

http://markting10.nl/

"You always need to be fully focused. This has been the difference between us and the others over the past two-and-a-half years."

Victory means Juventus maintain their eight-point lead over Roma at the summit of the table.

Juventus must keep winning, warns Llorente

The Spanish striker wason target in Saturday's 4-2 win over Sampdoria but insists
the Bianconeri must maintain their form - starting with the clash against Roma on Tuesday.

Jan 19, 2014

Juventus striker Fernando Llorente has urged his side to keep up their remarkable winning streak following Saturday's 4-2 win over Sampdoria.

http://markting10.nl/

The former Athletic Bilbao star headed home his eighth league goal of the season as further strikes from Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal, who got two, made it 12 wins in a row for the reigning Serie A champions.

Llorente admits he is thrilled with the Biancocelesti's current form but has warned they must not allow their level to drop - particularly as they prepare for a Coppa Italia quarter-final with Roma.

"Our team is doing really well as we are - we need to continue along this path. The important thing is winning, and we're doing that well," the Spain international was quoted as saying by Juventus' official website.

http://markting10.nl/

"It was important to win today and we've done it. Sampdoria proved difficult opposition and played a great game. They caused us some problems, and [sinisa] Mihajlovic's men showed the strength they have in their ranks.

"Now it's time for the Coppa Italia. We'll be playing against very strong opposition in Rome."

‘Juve’s secret is Conte’

Jan 20, 2014

Angelo Ogbonna says Juventus’ secret lies in their Coach Antonio Conte, as he affirms the team expect a different match against Roma tomorrow.

http://markting10.nl/

The Old Lady heads into Tuesday evening’s Coppa Italia quarter-final away to the Giallorossi eight points ahead of them at the top of Serie A and with the recent memory of a 3-0 win in the League over them.

However, for the Bianconeri’s 25-year-old defender, that result won’t be on anyone’s mind come tomorrow night.

“I do not think Roma will be affected by the League result, they are a great team,” Ogbonna has mused to Sky Sport Italia this week.

http://markting10.nl/

“The fact that it is a one-off game, though, will not change our attitude. Tomorrow I expect a tactical game to begin with, whilst it will not be a rematch.

“It is a different competition from the League, whilst the Coppa Italia is one of our goals and we will try to bring home a positive result.”

Ogbonna was asked what the secret was to Juve’s recent imperious form.

http://markting10.nl/

“It is clear that there is attention to detail, the compactness, the desire, which Conte gives to us in every game, so as to deal with it and analyse it in the best way.

“How have I fitted in? Through a lot of work. At the beginning perhaps it may seem tiring, but it takes a while for everyone to assimilate to their roles.

“It was very good for me to work with the Coach to find the right timing and he has advised me to push beyond the threshold [of fatigue].”

http://markting10.nl/

Juve are then once more in the capital for next weekend’s return to League action, when they face Lazio.

“The most important match is tomorrow’s.”

No Conte conference pre-Roma?

Jan 20, 2014

Antonio Conte will reportedly not be addressing the media ahead of Juventus’ Coppa Italia clash with Roma.

http://markting10.nl/

Coaches traditionally talk to reporters on the day preceding each fixture, but ahead of Tuesday evening’s Cup quarter-final in the capital, Conte is reported by Tuttosport as set to skip that particular commitment.

Roma Coach Rudi Garcia is expected in front of the microphones during the course of Monday, however.

Pjanic set for new role?

Jan 20, 2014

Rudi Garcia is speculated as considering handing Miralem Pjanic a new role in attack for Roma against Juventus tomorrow evening.

http://markting10.nl/

The Frenchman is seen as keen to face the Bianconeri in the Coppa Italia quarter-final with his quartet of midfielders all on the pitch, calling for a reshuffle in his usual 4-3-3 formation.

The giornalaccio rosa dello Sport believe that Radja Nainggolan could stick in midfield alongside Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman and that Pjanic will return, but to one of the front-three positions.

http://markting10.nl/

However, Pjanic could find himself back in midfield, as indications from Monday morning’s training session suggest it is a straight choice between the Bosnian and Nainggolan for one position.

Also, whilst De Rossi trained with the full group, his place is seen as under some scrutiny, due to struggles with his physical condition and having suffered with a fever yesterday.

Meanwhile, Garcia is seen as also have to decide between Francesco Totti and Mattia Destro in attack.

Conte considering eight changes

Jan 20, 2014

Antonio Conte could make as many as eight changes to the Juventus line-up to face Roma on Tuesday night.

http://markting10.nl/

For the Coppa Italia quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico, the 44-year-old is speculated as set to ring the changes, on from Saturday night’s League win over Sampdoria.

From that match, the Bianconeri are seen as likely to return Leonardo Bonucci to the centre of defence after shaking off a thigh injury, with Giorgio Chiellini alongside him, as he is suspended for next weekend’s trip to Lazio.

Martin Caceres is likely to complete the back three, which will sit in front of regular Coppa ‘keeper Marco Storari.

http://markting10.nl/

Meanwhile, Tuttosport say that midfield should see Andrea Pirlo return from being rested in Week 20 and that he will play alongside Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio, with Paul Pogba dropping out for a rest.

Mauricio Isla and Federico Peluso may replace Stephan Lichtsteiner and Kwadwo Asamoah on the wings, whilst attack may be the responsibility of Fabio Quagliarella and Sebastian Giovinco.

The speculated changes would see only Chiellini, Marchisio and Vidal keep their place from the side that started against Samp at the weekend.

Garcia not after Juve revenge

Jan 20, 2014

Ahead of the Coppa Italia clash with Juventus, Rudi Garcia has stressed Roma are only concerned with booking their place in the semi-finals.

http://markting10.nl/

The Giallorossi are Juventus’ closest challengers in the title race, but the 3-0 defeat to the Old Lady three weeks ago still sees them trailing the leaders by eight points.

However, Garcia has stated his team will not be actively seeking revenge against the Bianconeri in tomorrow evening’s Cup quarter-final.

“This is the most important game of this week,” began Garcia to reporters today.

http://markting10.nl/

“But above all it is a game that leads to the semi-finals, and that is what counts. We’ve to ensure that Roma is the team going through.”

“The Olimpico will be nearly full and that will make for a great environment. It is a good advantage for us, it is easier to play at home with the fans behind the team.

“The League? “It is difficult to talk about this, as it is not my focus going into this game. The League is in the past and we are doing well. We moved two points ahead of Napoli and three on Inter.

http://markting10.nl/

“We will have time to talk about this later, as there are still so many days ahead and we also have the return leg against Juventus at the Olimpico.

“Today, we are solely concentrated on the Coppa and getting through to the next round.”

Garcia was pressed for whether he has seen his team react to Week 18’s defeat to Juve.

http://markting10.nl/

“It’s useless to talk about this game as it is in the past. We have responded well in the following games, and that is all that matters because the truth comes from the field.

“It was important to get back to winning ways right away and we did that against Sampdoria.

“Moreover, it is important to win in the League, but I have no doubts about the desire of this team. Every game we give everything we have.”

http://markting10.nl/

Roma have been active in the transfer window and following on from Radja Nainggolan’s arrival from Cagliari, full-back Michel Bastos is set to join the club pending a medical. Garcia believes that both players will give a boost to the Lupi.

“We are stronger now with these two players, as they give us more solutions. [Michael] Bradley may have left, but Nainggolan’s arrival means that we have maintained numerical parity in midfield.

“Bastos provides us with more options going forward, especially on the flanks. With [Federico] Balzaretti injured, he also presents us with a defensive option. He still has to do work to get to the physical level expected, but he will start training.”

http://markting10.nl/

Turning his attention to tomorrow’s game, Garcia was asked if Miralem Pjanic would be starting and how he plans to stop Andrea Pirlo.

“We have five strong players in the midfield, and we will also be needing them in Europe. But, the fact that we signed Nainggolan does not mean that we will be allowing Pjanic to leave.”

“It is not just question of stopping Pirlo. They have so many strong players, and they can be dangerous from all sides.

http://markting10.nl/

“But it is the same for them. We too have 13 or 14 players who have found the net this season, and that can be seen as having an extra weapon.

“Pirlo is a champion, and if he isn’t that involved, then better for us. But, we have to play our own game and be more effective and cynical.”

Llorente: I can still improve

Jan 20, 2014

Fernando Llorente insists he can still improve for Juventus, as he outlines the club’s determination in the Cup and how Serie A is not like La Liga.

http://markting10.nl/

The Spaniard has put aside a difficult start to life in Italy to find form and a regular spot in the Bianconeri’s first XI, where he has just reached double figures in goals scored.

“I’m learning a lot from the Coach, but I also know that I can grow even more,” Llorente has considered to reporters, on from scoring at the weekend against Sampdoria.

“Continuing to work as we are doing, success will arrive and it will be more beautiful.

http://markting10.nl/

“Slowly, I am returning to the level that I had reached in Spain. Now I am very well and I feel happy.”

Juve head out to the capital this midweek for Tuesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final with Roma.

“It is a competition that is not a nuisance to us, but a real goal. We really want to win it, because the last two years with Conte it has been beyond the team.

http://markting10.nl/

“The Giallorossi are having an unbelievable League campaign, but we are even more so.

“There is not much difference, perhaps Juve is greater in concentration, aggression, finding the goal.”

Juve lead Roma by eight points in Serie A, but the 28-year-old doesn’t agree with comparisons between the Italian and Spanish top flights.

http://markting10.nl/

“Is Serie A becoming monotonous like La Liga? No, actually, it is a tough League, difficult. Every game must be accompanied by a lot of tension and it has never been easy for Juve to win.

“Here in Italy the first thing I learned is that any opponent can hurt you. And many times we have suffered so much, as against Chievo, or with Verona. But fighting to the end, the result has come.”

Llorente’s struggles last year with Athletic Bilbao saw him slip out of contention with the Spain squad, but his form is seen as likely to have him fighting for a place at the World Cup in Brazil.

http://markting10.nl/

“There is still a lot of time, anything can happen. For me and Carlos [Tevez], the important thing is to help Juve to continue along the right path.

“We are delighted for how the team is going, tomorrow is a very important match and we want to win again.

“Pogba? I’ve no fear in us losing him, in fact, I’d like him to stay here. He is young, he can still grow very much with us.”

Boniek: Roma-Juve is 50-50

Jan 20, 2014

Zbigniew Boniek has mused that Roma and Juventus are equal favourites for tomorrow’s night Coppa Italia clash.

http://markting10.nl/

The League’s top two teams face off in the quarter-finals of the knockout competition on Tuesday evening and have their former Polish midfielder split between loyalties.

“Both teams value the Cup - compared to the past it is becoming a prestigious objective, credit must go to those who have changed its format,” Boniek began to Anch’io Sport this week.

“This will be a great match. If they had been playing in Turin, then I would have said that Juventus were definitely favourites.

http://markting10.nl/

“But, in Rome, the teams will be closer to 50-50. Conte will, as always, make changes for the Cup, while Roma have rested some players just for tomorrow.

“The game counts more for Roma, because Juventus are favourites in the League, whilst in general the two teams are equal.

“Juventus has a lot more aggression, they play very high and take away the opportunity to think for their opponents.

http://markting10.nl/

“In addition, they have strikers that no-one has in Serie A, so… The aggression that Conte transmits is unique.

“Roma cannot possibly do more than they have already, whilst the Bianconeri are doing something impressive.”

Roma want revenge on Juventus - Garcia

The Roma manager hopes that home advantage will prevail in his side’s
Coppa Italia quarter-final against the league leaders on Tuesday.

Jan 21, 2014

Roma boss Rudi Garcia thinks his players can exact revenge on Juventus on Tuesday after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the opening game of 2014.

http://markting10.nl/

The Giallorossi could have gone within two points of the Bianconeri at the top of Serie A if they had won in Turin, but they were reduced to nine men and saw their Scudetto charge severely damaged earlier in January when they were defeated.

Garcia is determined that his team will not suffer the same fate in Tuesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final as they look to advance to the last four with a win at the Stadio Olimpico.

"I'd like to win against Juventus because it is a game where the winner goes through to the semi-finals," the former Lille boss told Rai Sport. "At the moment we are focused on this competition, it will be a good game to play.

http://markting10.nl/

"We need to ensure that the match goes in our favour this time. The venue of the game can change everything. It is difficult to play at their stadium, but this time it is at the Stadio Olimpico.

"Their team know how to do everything. Juve do not envy any other team. They know that they have a good squad that can play together.

http://markting10.nl/

"They have won two league titles and this year - with the arrival of two strong strikers in Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente - the team's even stronger."

The winner of the Coppa Italia last-eight clash will face Lazio or Napoli in the last four.

'Coppa quarter won't decide title'

Jan 21, 2014

Fabio Capello has insisted that the Coppa Italia clash between Roma and Juventus will have no bearing on the Scudetto.

http://markting10.nl/

The top two in the League meet in the cup quarter-final this evening, but the former Giallorossi and Bianconeri Coach has claimed that the outcome will not have an effect on who wins the title.

“The title is between Roma and Juventus,” he told TuttoJuve. “That’s how I see it. But the Coppa Italia has nothing to do with that.

“It’s an important game though, to see where Roma are in comparison with Juve. We already know what to expect from Juve!”

http://markting10.nl/

The current Russian national team boss then commented on his memories of managing both sides.

“I have beautiful memories in both places. I can’t pick one over the other. They were two different experiences.”

http://markting10.nl/

Capello concluded by refusing to comment on the rumoured swap deal between Fredy Guarin and Mirko Vucinic.

“No, no. I can’t comment. These things are for Coaches, not me.”

Nainggolan: 'Roma, prove ourselves'

Jan 21, 2014

It’s Roma-Juventus in the Coppa Italia tonight and Radja Nainggolan believes “this is the right moment to prove ourselves.”

http://markting10.nl/

The teams had already met in Serie A earlier this month with the Bianconeri emerging 3-0 winners in Turin.

This evening they go head-to-head in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, which kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.45 GMT.

“After the game we lost two weeks ago, this is the right moment to prove ourselves and is above all important for the Coppa Italia,” Nainggolan told Rai Sport.

http://markting10.nl/

The Belgian international had not yet joined Roma when they lost 3-0, but starts tonight because Miralem Pjanic is not 100 per cent fit.

“We will play our game. Juve are an excellent side, but we too are strong and I believe we can challenge them.”

Line-ups: Roma-Juventus

Jan 21, 2014

Roma and Juventus go head-to-head again tonight, but this time in the Coppa Italia quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico.

http://markting10.nl/

It kicks off at 20.45 CET and is an opportunity for revenge after the Giallorossi lost 3-0 in Turin during their recent Serie A encounter.

Roma certainly seem to be taking this more seriously, particularly as they are in Europe, so the Coppa Italia is their best chance at silverware this season.

Francesco Totti, Gervinho and Alessandro Florenzi complete the starting trident, supported by Kevin Strootman, Radja Nainggolan and Daniele De Rossi, as Miralem Pjanic is not 100 per cent fit.

http://markting10.nl/

Federico Balzaretti is still unavailable due to injury, but Douglas Maicon returns after he was rested in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Livorno.

Antonio Conte prefers to rotate his squad for this Coppa Italia fixture, giving Fabio Quagliarella and Sebastian Giovinco the opportunity to shine in attack.

Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal are still in the midfield, while it is the first choice defence, but Marco Storari as always replaces Gigi Buffon in goal.

http://markting10.nl/

Mauricio Isla and Federico Peluso are the wingers in a 3-5-2 system.

The referee for this delicate encounter is Paolo Tagliavento.

HT 0-0: Fiery Roma-Juventus

Jan 21, 2014

Roma had the better of the first half, but Juventus wanted Mehdi Benatia sent off as it’s 0-0 in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

http://markting10.nl/

The Bianconeri won the Serie A showdown 3-0 in Turin earlier this month, but they went head-to-head again for the Coppa Italia quarter-final knockout round. Rudi Garcia fielded a full-strength side, with the exception of the not 100 per cent fit Miralem Pjanic and Federico Balzaretti, but Antonio Conte rotated his squad.

Radja Nainggolan had the first shot wide from distance, followed by Alessandro Florenzi, as Roma’s pressing game proved effective. Juve focused on the counter-attack and were furious when Mehdi Benatia was booked for knocking over Sebastian Giovinco around 20 metres away from goal, as they wanted a red for terminating a scoring opportunity on Pirlo’s long ball. The resulting Pirlo free kick was deflected off the wall.

Some splendid Daniele De Rossi footwork set up a chance that Francesco Totti had charged down in the box, then Kevin Strootman at full stretch just failed to get on the end of a Vasilis Torosidis cross at the back post.

http://markting10.nl/

Totti’s volleyed snapshot whistled just wide and Gervinho’s ball across the six-yard box was inches beyond Florenzi. The pressure was increasing and from a similar position Douglas Maicon’s ball flashed past Marco Storari, who mistimed his intervention, and needed Mauricio Isla to clear the loose ball.

Roma 0-0 Juventus (Half-Time)

Roma: De Sanctis; Maicon, Benatia, Castan, Torosidis; Nainggolan, De Rossi, Strootman; Florenzi, Totti, Gervinho

Gervinho stuns Bianconeri

The Cote d'Ivoire striker scored with just 11 minutes remaining
to give the home side victory at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jan 21, 2014

Gervinho scored the only goal of the game as Roma moved into the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 1-0 win over Juventus.

http://markting10.nl/

The capital club, who were beaten 3-0 by Juve in Serie A earlier this month, dictated play for much of a scrappy encounter and were rewarded with a victory that keeps alive their hopes of avenging a defeat to Lazio in last year's final.

Gervinho was the hero on the night, as he struck 11 minutes from time with a superb backheeled volley to condemn the Bianconeri to a first domestic loss since a 4-2 defeat to Fiorentina on October 20.

Roma were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men after 14 minutes when the referee elected only to caution last defender Mehdi Benatia for a foul on Sebastian Giovinco.

http://markting10.nl/

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half without creating any real goalscoring opportunities, with veteran playmaker Francesco Totti going closest just after the half-hour mark as he sent a left-footed volley wide.

Juve looked to have taken the lead a minute into the second half when Federico Peluso headed in at the far post, only for the linesman to rule that the ball had crossed the byline and gone out of play in the build-up.

Alessandro Florenzi then went close with a header for Rudi Garcia's men, before the 75th minute introduction of midfielder Miralem Pjanic proved decisive.

http://markting10.nl/

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international needed just four minutes to make an impact, the former Lyon man surging into the penalty area before laying the ball off for Kevin Strootman, whose near post cross was turned home in stunning fashion by Gervinho.

Juve failed to mount any sort of revival and although Pjanic wasted a chance to add a second in injury-time, Roma held on to progress to the semi-finals.

in the Coppa Italia quarter-final and morale-boosting ‘revenge’.

The semi-final will see the Giallorossi take on either Napoli or Lazio on February 5 and 12, as this is the only stage of the tournament to be decided over two legs.

Despite carrying a knock in the first half, Andrea Barzagli stayed on and Angelo Ogbonna replaced Giorgio Chiellini. Juve thought they had taken the lead straight after the restart with a Federico Peluso cushioned header at the back post, but the Isla cross had already gone out of play.

Florenzi’s looping header whistled wide from an impressive volleyed Torosidis cross, then Barzagli crucially intercepted Totti’s cross for Gervinho in the six-yard box. Giovinco wasted a good counter-attacking opportunity when his pass wasn’t quite accurate enough for Arturo Vidal. Peluso was dangerous again, nodding the ball almost out of the hands of Morgan De Sanctis.

http://markting10.nl/

Totti had another powerful attempt charged down in the penalty area, but Isla wasted a promising opportunity when he scuffed his shot rather than pass to Vidal in a better position to score.

Pjanic came off the bench and proved decisive. He surged forward, spread the play for Strootman down the left and the cross was flicked in off the outside of his boot from four yards to give Roma the lead.

http://markting10.nl/

Conte threw on Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente in a bid to turn this around in the final 10 minutes. Totti’s cross-shot was deflected to flash just past Gervinho at the back post.

Gervinho fired straight at Storari, Claudio Marchisio ballooned over the bar and Torosidis curled an audacious attempt off target. Pjanic ran forward in stoppages for a daisy-cutter that skimmed the base of the upright. Juventus needed a goal to force extra time, but Vidal lost his footing on the edge of the area to blast over.

Gervinho sends Giallorossi to Coppa Italia semi-final

Jan 21, 2014

Roma beat Juventus 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Tuesday night in their Coppa Italia quarter-final clash.

http://markting10.nl/

The only goal of the game was scored by Gervinho who finished off a fantastic team movement.

After a cagey first five minutes new Roma signing Radja Nainggolan tried his luck from distance, only for it to go wide of Marco Storari’s post.

Roma began to up their game, and after a quick pass and move the ball found Alessandro Florenzi whose shot went wide.

http://markting10.nl/

Then came a major talking point when Sebastian Giovinco was brought down by Mehdi Benatia with the latter appearing to be the last defender, however referee Paolo Tagliavento opted to book the Moroccan international.

With 20 minutes of the first half gone it was clear that the Bianconeri were aiming to slow down the tempo in an attempt to combat the Giallorossi’s enthusiasm.

The Giallorossi continued their attacking onslaught however, this time Daniele De Rossi played the ball out wide to Francesco Totti whose cross was cleared by Giorgio Chiellini before it could reach Florenzi.

http://markting10.nl/

Roma continued to threaten Juve, this time Vasilis Torisidis’ cross went across the face of goal untouched.

Rudi Garcia’s men continued to press high up the pitch, this time Totti’s volley from long range went inches wide of the post.

Juventus could have conceded when Gervinho played the ball out wide to Nainggolan who laid the ball off to Totti, but the latter’s shot took a deflection.

http://markting10.nl/

In the opening minutes of the second half Juventus thought they were 1-0 up when Fedrico Peluso headed past Morgan De Sanctis but the linesman had his flag up as the initial cross appeared to have crossed the byline.

Roma responded quickly, but this time Florenzi’s looping header went wide of the far post.

The Giallorossi continued to knock on the door, Totti’s swerving cross was cleared in the last minute by Leonardo Bonucci before it could reach Gervinho.

http://markting10.nl/

Roma could’ve been caught on the break when Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella’s presence was outnumbering Roma who only had Benatia back defending, but before Giovinco’s attempted through ball reached Quagliarella, Kevin Strootman had made a last-gasp interception.

Peluso had a great chance to put Juve ahead when he beat De Sanctis to a cross but the former Atalanta man had his eyes shut and failed to direct the ball.

Roma finally broke the deadlock when substitute Miralem Pjanic’s made a bolstering run from midfield, waited for Strootman who was coming in from the left and the Netherlands international’s cross found Gervinho who took one step to beat Bonucci to the ball and finish to make it 1-0.

http://markting10.nl/

Gervinho could’ve scored another goal minutes later but his shot was saved by Storari.

Pjanic almost topped an instrumental contribution to the game, but his stinging drive went wide of the post.

With this win, Roma are through to the semi-finals and will face either Lazio or Napoli in the semi-finals.

Initial reaction and random observations

Jan 21, 2014

When your team doesn't record a shot on goal, it's hard to win a game against a good team like Roma. When you don't play well, it's hard to win a game against a good team like Roma. When your best players don't play up to their ability, it's hard to win against a good team like Roma.

http://markting10.nl/

All of those things are applicable in the aftermath of Juventus' elimination from the Coppa Italia on Tuesday night.

In total, there were two shots on goal at the Stadio Olimpico. One was Gervinho's 79-minute goal, the other easily saved by Marco Storari a few moments later. Two shots on goal, both by Roma, none by Juventus. Of Juve's six — SIX! — shots against Roma, five went flying into the stands, and the other being blocked. It was as lackluster as a Juventus attack as we've seen in awhile.

In fact, it was the first time that a Juventus team managed by Antonio Conte has failed to record even a single shot on goal. Seriously.

http://markting10.nl/

What's that highly analytical statement a good number of people say? Oh, that's right — ball don't lie.

It's pretty difficult to score goals when your best scoring chances are flying over the goal with plenty of room to spare. That was the case for Juventus on Tuesday night. Regardless of what the lineup did or didn't look like, those who played the majority of the match didn't deliver. Nothing more, nothing less.

JuventusFC ✔ @juventusfcen
#Conte: I'm happy with the performances of those who play less, it's a pity we conceded during our best moment of the game. #RomaJuve

Roma were the better team. They undoubtedly played the better game and had the better approach. They deserved to win and I won't hesitate repeating that over and over again. It's as simple as that. End of story. Now back to Serie A where Juventus is the team who is dominating the competition. I like those final scores better anyway.

Random thoughts and observations

• A lot, A LOT of the talk is going to be about just how serious Conte takes the Coppa Italia. I don't doubt that he thinks it's important. I mean, it is Conte after all and the guy wants to win everything possible. But the thing with the Coppa is that Conte has always played a squad with mostly reserves. So in that sense, he's consistent about what he is doing when approaching the tournament. The thing is, though, it wasn't a reserve-filled squad like we've gotten in the past. Juventus just played poorly. That's it. It's not like Simone Padoin was playing as a regista or anything. The squad that played Tuesday weren't good at all. Simple as that.

http://markting10.nl/

But if you doubt that he doesn't care about the Coppa Italia, I suggest you watch his post-match interview. Go ahead and report back to me.

• In the match preview, I put an emphasis on what a rested Andrea Pirlo can possibly do. What did he end up doing after over a week of rest? Not a whole hell of anything at all. This was one a those ever-so-often Pirlo stinkers. What's hard to believe is that it didn't come after he's played game after game for a month straight. It was when he was one of the most rested players on the field.

• Maybe in the match preview I should have concentrated on Sebastian Giovinco and Fabio Quagliarella might or might not do. Giovinco was one of the better players in a sub-par lot for Juventus. But Quagliarella was a lot like many Juve players — incredibly ineffective. A night to forget without a doubt.

http://markting10.nl/

• Juventus' game encapsulated in one simple gif.

i2ovdWNFIF9Pq_medium.gif

Swing and a miss.

• Man oh man did Leonardo Bonucci get caught ball watching on Gervinho's goal. Oofa. Not good.

• Juventus is up eight points on Roma in the Serie A table. Let's just remember that when we're feeling the need to rant and rave about what Conte did wrong against Roma on Tuesday. Things aren't all bad...

Conte: Juventus were too shy

The Bianconeri boss has acknowledged that Roma deserved to win 1-0
in the Coppa Italia but is unhappy with the decision not to send off Mehdi Benatia.

zxn2ar.jpg

Jan 21, 2014

Juventus coach Antonio Conte says his side's "shy" start to the eventual 1-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Roma was to blame for the loss.

http://markting10.nl/

A late Gervinho effort saw Rudi Garcia's side into the semi-finals of the competition at the expense of the Serie A champions.

The former Siena boss feels his troops would also have been worthy winners on the night, but accepted that they came up against good opponents in the form of the Giallorossi.

"It was a balances game, and Roma's goal came when we were playing better. In the first half, we were perhaps a little too shy, but I do think we can say that we suffered.

http://markting10.nl/

"We're two strong teams, this time it went in their favour and they won. The guys are not to blame. We have used the Coppa Italia to rotate.

"There's the Scudetto and the Europa League. It was not easy to come here and deal with this Roma. We could have won but in the end they won."

http://markting10.nl/

Mehdi Benatia was booked for dragging down Sebastian Giovinco in the first period and Conte went on to say that the Moroccan could have been sent off for the offence.

"I think he was the last man. I don't understand it. However, I'm not going to replace the referee. He decided it that way and we accept it."

Garcia: 'Roma's tactical victory'

16k1ixf.jpg

Jan 21, 2014

Rudi Garcia felt Roma “wanted it more” and “it was a tactical victory” to knock Juventus out of the Coppa Italia.

http://markting10.nl/

Gervinho scored the late goal to decide the quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I think Roma wanted it more. We played against a very strong side and we saw tonight they have two first choice line-ups, so you can’t tell when they are rotating,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“We played well tonight, kept possession in the first half and it was also a tactical victory, as we decided to wait a little more after the break to open up spaces. That’s how we got the goal.”

http://markting10.nl/

Miralem Pjanic was a substitute who created the move for the winning goal.

“His pass was excellent for Kevin Strootman and above all Gervinho’s run to the near post. I had many options on the bench tonight and we expected the teams to battle for an hour.

“We had prepared for Miralem to be decisive when he came off the bench. I wanted a team that worked hard and covered the midfield, which did work in the first half. I can say Miralem is an essential player for us and will be next year too.”

http://markting10.nl/

Roma will face either Napoli or Lazio in the semi-final, which is decided over two legs, but Garcia shrugged off a suggestion the Giallorossi were now favourites for the trophy.

“No, I don’t think we are the favourites. There are still great teams in the competition and the two semi-finals will be at a very high level. We should enjoy this victory and from tomorrow be concentrated on Verona, where we’ll play with great ambition.

“Napoli or Lazio makes no difference to us.”

http://markting10.nl/

The 1-0 victory over Juventus arrived just two weeks after Roma were crushed 3-0 at the Juventus Stadium in Serie A.

“Tonight was the Coppa Italia, but it was also the Serie A leaders against second, so it counted for the environment. We saw a Roma side with character who took the initiative in Turin, but this time we created spaces and were able to strike at the right moment.

“At times a team has a strategy, but that cannot be put into action and they are obligated to work on the counter-attack. I think tactically Roma worked very well this evening.

http://markting10.nl/

“This was a game our fans were waiting for. We saw the Olimpico full and that’s what football is all about, seeing the supporters give their all to cheer us on. I am proud of the Roma fans tonight.

“We are competitive, but also know Juve are a great side who won two consecutive Scudetti. We did not expect Juve to have 55 points after 20 games, as 47 is an exceptional tally already. Tonight we saw we have the abilities and the talent to beat a side that is one of the biggest clubs in Italy.

“How strong are Roma? We’ll see at the end of the season, but we have to keep pushing and see where we end up. I am truly satisfied.”

Conte: 'Peluso goal should've stood'

33o33fc.jpg

Jan 21, 2014

Antonio Conte felt Juventus should not have had their goal disallowed in a “very balanced” Coppa Italia defeat to Roma.

http://markting10.nl/

Gervinho got the decisive strike with 11 minutes left on the clock in tonight’s quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I think it was a very balanced encounter, that Roma scored perhaps in the moment we looked to be taking control,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“Both sides played well and studied their opponents. I am satisfied with the performance of those players who usually don’t play as much.

http://markting10.nl/

“It’s a shame, as we conceded a goal during our best moment of the game. Our tactical plan was to stay solid and try to hurt Roma. We were perhaps a bit too timid in the first half, but at the same time I didn’t see us suffer particularly at the back.

“An incident was decisive in a one-off game and Roma scored, whereas our goal was disallowed.”

There were two incidents that Juve complained about, as Mehdi Benatia was booked for a foul on Sebastian Giovinco when the Bianconeri wanted a straight red.

http://markting10.nl/

“I thought that could be considered a last man foul. I asked the Fourth Official that too. In any case, I don’t wish to comment on the referee, he made this decision and that’s all.”

Federico Peluso had scored straight after the restart, but the linesman had already lifted his flag as Mauricio Isla’s cross appeared to go out of play.

“In all honesty from the footage it looks like it’s in play by a metre, at least. Look at the ball and where the crossbar is, it seems to be in play. I repeat, referees can make mistakes, but it looks like it’s in and quite a bit in, at that,” said a clearly irritated Conte.

http://markting10.nl/

“Looking at the reaction of the Roma players, who didn’t protest, they even look like they are blessed by the linesman lifting his flag. Maybe it’s better that it happened against us, otherwise imagine the chaos that would’ve emerged with people talking about ‘help.’

“We don’t play to go on the counter-attack, as we don’t have players of those characteristics. We always try to get the ball, keep possession and hurt our opponents, but we very rarely go on the counter. Our approach was the same that we had in Turin and we only got stretched out on the goal.”

Juventus had the opportunity to win their 10th edition of the Coppa Italia, the first since 1995.

http://markting10.nl/

“It’s a shame that we were elimination from a tournament. I have nothing more to ask from the lads, as in the past we always used the Coppa Italia to rotate the squad also to help the team grow in future. I need 20-22 players who are accustomed to playing at this level.

“I had some positive responses and the regret remains that we conceded a goal during our best period of the game.”

Conte was asked about the chaotic row with Inter over the failure of their Fredy Guarin-Mirko Vucinic exchange, but he refused to comment.

Daniele De Rossi: 'Roma got lucky
with disallowed Juventus goal'

hx0vfo.jpg

Jan 21, 2014

Daniele De Rossi feels neither Roma nor Juventus are “particularly superior” to each other, but admits he’d have complained in their shoes.

http://markting10.nl/

The 1-0 Coppa Italia quarter-final victory came just two weeks after the Giallorossi were beaten 3-0 in Turin to open up an eight-point gap at the top of the Serie A table. What changed?

“The result has changed, which isn’t to be sniffed at. We had played well in the first half in Turin, but Juve did well to take an early lead and double it straight after the restart.

“When games are this balanced between two great sides, a single goal can be decisive,” the midfielder told Rai Sport.

http://markting10.nl/

“We focused a great deal on set plays, which was where the goals came from in Turin, and perhaps playing at home made us a little bit more aggressive.

“I didn’t see Juve looking particularly superior in Turin, nor were we particularly superior here. The two teams are on a similar level and I am pleased to say that.”

Federico Peluso had the ball in the net at the dawn of the second half, but the goal was not given because the linesman flagged Mauricio Isla’s cross had gone out of play.

http://markting10.nl/

“It seemed ok to me on the pitch, but I honestly don’t know, as I was at a different angle to the linesman. I hope he made the right decision. If this time we were helped, then in other occasions we were penalised, so we’ll take it!

“I’ll be honest, if I had been on the other team in that situation then I would’ve protested a lot, because from my position it didn’t look out of play,” confessed De Rossi.

Does this victory give Roma the sense they can get back into the Scudetto race?

http://markting10.nl/

“Unfortunately this win isn’t worth Serie A points, so it’s all still as it was! It’s a shame we dropped points, for example against Sassuolo, but the season is long and we can only try to win them all. I think we can do it because, apart from Juve, I believe Roma are stronger than all the other teams.”

The Giallorossi will play either Napoli or Lazio in the semi-final next month and De Rossi immediately said he didn’t want a repeat of last year’s Final.

http://markting10.nl/

“I prefer to face Napoli in the semi-final. To play three derbies in a week is not easy. Last season they looked more of a team, whereas this year Roma are now more solid.

“Thank God, everything has returned to what it was. This time a year ago I was knocking on Walter Sabatini’s door every other day and wasn’t happy. Having not necessarily a winning campaign with Roma, but even a dignified one, is the best thing in the world for me.”

Barzagli on Roma and Vucinic

2qwh4iw.jpg

Jan 21, 2014

Andrea Barzagli was “disappointed” with a Coppa Italia exit to Roma and reveals Mirko Vucinic’s Juventus locker “is empty.”

http://markting10.nl/

The defender spoke to RAI Sport after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.

“Of course we’re disappointed to go out of the Coppa Italia, as this was one of our objectives.

“What did we get wrong? The goal. We knew it would be a balanced encounter that would be decided on incidents, which in truth it was at the Juventus Stadium too.

http://markting10.nl/

“We had a few chances, but the goal came late and we didn’t have time to turn it around.”

Gervinho scored the winner 11 minutes from time after good work from Miralem Pjanic and Kevin Strootman.

“We hesitated for a moment. When you concede, there are always a series of errors. We could’ve closed up on them earlier in the move, but Roma are so strong on these moves and we tried to prevent them going on the counter-attack.

http://markting10.nl/

“Pjanic’s pass looked like it was going out, but Strootman kept it in, and then the cross found Gervinho reacting quickly to get in position.

“We are doing very well this season, as we’re top in Serie A and still in the Europa League. This exit and the Champions League were painful, but will help us grow.”

Antonio Conte was angry at the decision to disallow Federico Peluso’s goal, but Barzagli calmed the situation.

http://markting10.nl/

“To be honest, I don’t think a player should comment on refereeing decisions. They look different on the pitch to on television. I didn’t see them, so I won’t comment.”

Today has been chaotic for Barzagli’s teammate Vucinic, who was on the verge of a move to Inter in exchange for Fredy Guarin before Erick Thohir pulled the plug under pressure from fans.

“He had emptied his locker. We said goodbye to Mirko and he was an integral part of two and a half fantastic years. If he returns to Vinovo then we’ll embrace him again.”

Zoff: Lazio can upset Juve

Jan 23, 2014

Dino Zoff believes that a Lazio side ‘with conviction’ can counter Juventus this weekend and pick up a result.

http://markting10.nl/

The Aquile play host to the Bianconeri in Week 21’s standout fixture and head into it unbeaten from their last three games.

It is a situation that, according to former Juve goalkeeper and Lazio Coach Zoff, could see Edy Reja’s men pick up something positive, even if the League leaders will be looking for their own response.

“Juventus will want to make up for the lacklustre performance against Roma,” the 71-year-old has begun in warning to Il Tempo today.

http://markting10.nl/

“Now they are thinking back to the League and will redeploy their strongest line-up.

“For Lazio it will be tough, but in the latest period they have picked up the results, healthily, and can counter against the problems Antonio Conte’s Juve will set.

“Lazio may also go into this game with some absences through injury and suspension, but the XI to go out on the field will be an organic form in every respect.

http://markting10.nl/

“If Lazio has conviction, I believe that they can create some real problems for Juventus. With a three-man defence [Edy Reja has returned the team to] they are much more covered and it is an ideal playing system for Hernanes.

“And Hernanes’ future? He is a great player, one that can often make the difference. Lazio have a good squad, but Hernanes has that something extra that without they lack.”

Klose: We can take a result

Jan 23, 2014

Miroslav Klose believes that ‘with a little luck’, Lazio are capable of taking at least a draw at home to Juventus this weekend.

http://markting10.nl/

Saturday evening sees the Biancocelesti host the League leaders eight positions and 28 points behind them, but looking to avenge 4-0 and 4-1 defeats in the Supercoppa and League last August.

It is a possibility that their German forward sees as manageable.

“We do not want to concede another four goals,” Klose has affirmed today to Sky Sport Italia.

http://markting10.nl/

“We must work hard in these coming days because we are convinced that we can do well.

“To me, Juventus are a great team, Conte is a great tactician.

“We have to win the individual battles and with a little luck we can take a draw, if not something more.”
