In 2008, he was King of Europe, lifting aloft the Champions League trophy alongside his Manchester United team-mates, but five years on Carlos Tevez is desperate to make a mark on the European stage once again. As explosive as he has been in domestic football in the interim, the Argentine has struggled in front of goal in continental competition.

The Juventus striker has now failed to score in Europe since April 2009, spanning 55 months, 1395 playing minutes and a total of 19 games for three different clubs - a remarkable statistic for somebody who, in that time, has scored 83 goals in 155 domestic fixtures, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a Community Shield and a Supercoppa. Add in his phenomenal start to life in Serie A with the Bianconeri and the European scoring stat simply makes no sense.

Obviously, Tevez has had issues in that time, most notably his bust-up with Roberto Mancini after his then-Manchester City boss asked him to come on as a substitute at Bayern Munich. That altercation effectively ruled him out of Champions League action for a year, but even taking that into account, it is extraordinary that the 29-year-old has not netted on the road in such a long time.

The immediate problem is that Juventus have been severely lacking in the Champions League this term. With no victories to their name after four matches in Group B, they remain in a good position to qualify for the last 16 more by luck than judgment.
But while Fabio Quagliarella and Fernando Llorente have netted twice each during the group stage despite otherwise indifferent starts, Tevez’s European record reflects his general form in front of goal for the last four-and-a-half years. The Argentine has netted seven goals at a rate of one every 147 minutes in Serie A, but just cannot get going in the Champions League.

Former Juventus striker Fabrizio Ravanelli told Goal's Romeo Agresti he has full confidence that Tevez's fortunes will change very soon, even saying he is “willing to bet that he will break his duck on Wednesday,” and it is clear to see why the 1996 Champions League winner has such confidence. This week, the Old Lady come face-to-face with group minnows Copenhagen, and while the Danes will be buoyed by their victory over Galatasaray last time out, Juventini have every right to expect this to be the most straight-forward of their side’s six group fixtures.

The 29-year-old would appear to be simply too good a finisher and in too rich a streak of form for this statistical anomaly to stretch any further, but if he continues to draw blanks in Europe then Juventus may well fall short of the desired mark in the competition once more. After last season’s quarter-final defeat to Bayern the club will be looking for at least the same again this term, but a continued struggle in front of goal for Tevez can only compromise that.

For, while Juve have depth in their strikeforce in terms of numbers, they do not have a second player with Tevez’s attitude, workrate and ability just off the front man. Sebastian Giovinco, Mirko Vucinic and Quagliarella are all considered alternatives up front, but only in the spot occupied by Llorente and not that of Tevez. The favoured forward line is very much ‘Tevez plus one’ and so it should be, based on what has been seen from the ex-Corinthians man on the pitch this term.

However, the goalless streak can only go on for so long. For both Tevez’s and Juventus’ sakes, the sooner he is back scoring in Europe, the better.

Juventus, though, are just one point adrift of second-placed Galatasaray and will look to seize the advantage in the race to claim the runners-up spot behind runaway group winners Real Madrid by seeing off Stale Solbakken’s men.

The Bianconeri are red-hot favourites to win on Wednesday, with Coral offering just 1/7 (1.14) for a home win in Turin while the visitors can be backed at a massive 18/1 (19.0) with Coral to cause a major upset by beating the Italian champions. The draw is chalked up at 13/2 (7.50) with the same firm.

Antonio Conte’s men will be eager to bring their recent domestic form into Wednesday’s encounter, for Juventus have won each of their last five Serie A matches without conceding a single goal.

With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that the hosts can be backed at just 4/6 (1.67) with Coral to win to nil on Wednesday while the same firm offer just 1/2 (1.50) for Antonio Conte's men to lead at both half-time and full-time.

However, there is value to be had in backing the Bianconeri on Wednesday night and punters who delve a little deeper may be rewarded here, with Coral offering a juicy 2/1 (3.0) for the home side (-1) in the half-time handicap market.

Better value, though, is the even money (2.0) quote from Coral for Spain international striker Fernando Llorente to net at any time during Wednesday’s encounter.

The 28-year-old has been in a rich vein of form lately, netting in each of his last three appearances for Antonio Conte’s side.

The Italian champions are likely to be on the front foot for long spells on Wednesday and, therefore, the even money (2.0) quote from Coral for Llorente to score at any time looks to be supremely generous and should be backed accordingly here.

Conte has Juventus XI doubts

Juventus boss Antonio Conte will field a 3-5-2 against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday, but he does have a few doubts about his starting XI.

Having used a 4-3-3 against Real Madrid in their last two European Cup games, the tactician will revert to the system the Old Lady presently use in Serie A.

Conte, though, will be without Andrea Barzagli and so will have to choose between Martin Caceres and Angelo Ogbonna.

If the Uruguayan is fielded in the back-three then Simone Padoin will be used on the right of the midfield five.

Jacobsen: Juve a top team

Copenhagen captain Lars Jacobsen has warned that his men are up against ‘a top European club’ in Juventus this evening.

Reports Copenhagen fan stabbed

Danish media are reporting four Copenhagen fans were attacked in Turin this morning ahead of the Juventus game.

Exstrabladet claims the supporters were attacked by five or six people while they were having breakfast near their hotel and one, Kristoffer Ostergaard, said he was stabbed.

However, he has not gone to hospital for treatment and said he won’t press charges with the local police.

He will also still go to the Juventus Stadium this evening for the Champions League encounter, though two members of his travelling party have decided to go back to Denmark without attending the game.

Juventus director Beppe Marotta praised Paul Pogba, but warned tonight they must beat Copenhagen “by any means necessary.”

Arturo Vidal scored a hat-trick as Juventus moved from the bottom of Champions League Group B to second place courtesy of a 3-1 win over Copenhagen.

The Chilean converted two penalties either side of Olof Mellberg's equaliser before nodding in a third to take his tally to five goals in the competition this season.

The result, which eliminates Copenhagen, leaves Juventus second in Group B, two points clear of Galatasaray, whom they visit in their final game with just a point needed to progress to the knockout stages.

Vidal's first penalty came shortly before the half-hour mark when Lars Jacobsen handled, but the hosts were momentarily stunned in the 56th minute when Mellberg levelled the scores against his former club.

Midfielder Vidal claimed his second from the spot five minutes later following a foul by Mellberg before completing his hat-trick with a header two minutes later.

The hosts made one change from the weekend as Leonardo Bonucci replaced Claudio Marchisio, while Claudemir and Christian Bolanos came into the Copenhagen side in place of Cesar Santin and Igor Vetokele, respectively.

Paul Pogba wasted the first chance of the game in the seventh minute, firing a weak shot at Johan Wiland from the edge of the box after beating the offside trap.

In the 29th minute, Juventus were gifted the chance to break the deadlock when Jacobsen inexplicably handled a cross while under pressure from Pogba and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Vidal stepped up and slammed the penalty low to Wiland's right for his third successful spot-kick in this year's competition.

Juve were dominant as the half wore on, Pogba rippling the side-netting from the edge of the area four minutes before the break.

Copenhagen equalised 11 minutes into the second half when Mellberg hooked the ball home from 10 yards after the Juve defence failed to clear a long throw from the left.

Parity lasted just five minutes, however, Mellberg's evening turning sour as he hauled down Fernando Llorente inside the area, Vidal once again sending the ball low into the bottom left-hand corner.

Vidal put some daylight between the two sides two minutes later, hanging in the air at the far post to meet Pogba's left-wing cross and loop a header into the far corner.

The remainder of the game proved uneventful with Juventus happy to sit back and soak up pressure to claim their first win of the campaign at a crucial time.

However, Mellberg wrestled Llorente to the ground as the Spaniard tried to turn and shoot, leading to another penalty. Vidal stepped up again and this time sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Chilean midfielder Vidal was star of the show, as he completed his hat-trick moments later with a stunning header. He hung in the air and looped a Pogba cross back across the face of goal into the far top corner.

Gigi Buffon’s first save of the night was on 66 minutes, turning a sudden Youssef Toutouh snapshot round the post, but there was another mad scramble in the six-yard box that the Bianconeri struggled to clear.

Vidal hat-trick spearheads Juventus past Copenhagen

Juventus earned their first Champions League victory of the season as they trounced Copenhagen 3-1 at Juventus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Arturo Vidal grabbed himself a hat-trick, rendering Olof Mellberg’s solitary strike in vain as the Bianconeri moved into second place in their group.

Given the fact that only one point separated the Bianconeri from Galatasaray for second place behind Real Madrid, coach Antonio Conte opted to field his strongest line-up possible with burgeoning strike duo Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez spearheading the attack. The Bianconeri also welcomed Giorgio Chiellini back from his ban following a red card received versus Real Madrid on 23 October.

Copenhagen naturally, were looking to absorb as much pressure and frustrate their opponents, hence the Lions didn’t venture much outside their own half for the opening portion of the first period. However, as they slowly grew into the match, spaces began to open up that the home side were keen to exploit, with opportunities on goal falling to Tevez and Paul Pogba during the early stages of the game.

Still, as the last 15 minutes of the first half started approaching the match remained goalless, with the Bianconeri support making their growing frustration known as their team were unable to put anything past Johan Wiland despite their dominance in terms of overall possession. That is, until defender Lars Jacobsen committed a handball whilst mixing things up with Pogba and Vidal duly converted the subsequent penalty to put them ahead in the 29th minute.

The goal appeared to lift a huge weight off the Old Lady’s shoulders as the fans also seemed to settle down a bit, with midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo having two opportunities in the remaining 10 minutes before halftime but was unable to really make anything out of either of his free-kicks.

There were some nervy moments for Juventus immediately following the break, as a clearance by Martin Caceres struck defender Ragnar Sigurdsson but fortunately for the reigning Scudetto holders, the ball deflected wide. Still, despite the early scare, Conte’s troops were soon able to re-assert themselves on the game with Tevez and Llorente showing more signs of their growing understanding with some good link-up play only to have the Argentine’s effort balloon over the bar.

Seemingly out of nowhere though, Olof Mellberg came back to haunt his former club in the 56th minute as he equalized from a goal mouth scramble to make it 1-1.

But this next sentence is also true: Llorente was one of Juventus' best players on the night. He absolutely battled all game — exemplified by his winning the penalty that led to Vidal's second goal. He just continues to build on each performance. That's what you want to see, and he's delivering even when he isn't finding the back of the net.

•It had to be Olof Mellberg scoring Copenhagen's goal, didn't it? Yeah, thought so.

•Andrea Pirlo: 94 touches, 85 percent pass success rate. If Vidal was leading the charge, Pirlo was driving the bus. Some of his passes were ones you only see a small number of players even try and fewer be successful with. For Pirlo, though, he makes them with the upmost of ease. A vintage kind of performance from a vintage kind of player.

When it comes to pressurised situations, no one quite handles them as well as the Italians. The need to prevail drives them, stokes their fire within and forces them into fulfilling their potential. It was difficult but the objective was achieved Wednesday at Juventus Stadium -- Juventus defeated Copenhagen, 3-1.

Arturo Vidal, it was thought, would be rested to avoid a possible yellow card that would see him miss the decisive match against Galatasaray. However, Antonio Conte, a coach who always lives in the now, opted to field his combatant and the result was a devastating one for the Danes.

Whether deployed as a centre-back against Livorno, a job he performed so admirably well, or asked to attack, managing a hat trick Wednesday, there is little the King cannot do and do well.

However, to describe the Champions League win as a perfect team performance would be to indulge in hyperbole. Deployed in their usual 3-5-2, Juve were effective and intelligent enough to collect all three points as they dominated proceedings the entirety of the match. However, as a club that boasts perfectionists both within and from afar, there are still errors that can be avoided and manoeuvres that ought to be improved.

A silly hand ball by Lars Jacobson led to a penalty. Until that point, Copenhagen and their organised defence made it difficult for the Old Lady to find a way through. The best opportunities for the Bianconeri came by virtue of Andrea Pirlo’s masterful work from midfield. His speed of thought and accurate execution created problems for Copenhagen on numerous occasions.

However, Carlos Tevez proved a little stale, Paul Pogba a little tired whilst Kwadwo Asamoahs runs forward were pleasing to watch but rarely effective when it came to creating opportunities. Imprecision was another problem for the Bianconeri, needlessly losing possession when they fought so hard to recover it. Nonetheless, Vidal scored the penalty and Juventus were in the lead.

A goal down, Stale Solbakken’s men returned from the half-time break with renewed energy and a more determined performance. They pressed higher up the pitch in hopes of impeding the way the Italians play the ball from the back and took care in keeping possession.

Utilising their strengths, they made Conte’s men suffer. Juve’s handling of set pieces proved terrifying to watch. Too many scrambles in the box afforded Copenhagen opportunities they should not have been allowed. Slow to respond, the Bianconeri panicked in various occasions while the Danes rushed to exploit, their speedy reactions proving dangerous.

However, replays suggest that the goal Olof Mellberg scored for the away side, came by virtue of a foul throw.

Nonetheless, the character Juve showed after conceding was impressive. They pushed more aggressively, the tempo quickened and Fernando Llorente proved inspirational upfront, tirelessly holding up the ball and picking out teammates in hopes of piercing through the tough Danish defence. Practically always with his back to goal, he was strong enough to keep the Danes at bay as he looked to turn and strike or latch on to accurate crosses to score.

His performances continue to improve and one only expects him to get even better. Meanwhile, it was lovely for fans to see Mirko Vucinic back on the pitch. He was afforded a few minutes against Livorno and allowed to play a bit role again Wednesday. Yet he barely needed any time to show off his masterful control of the ball and the creative edge he offers in the final third.

Another penalty conceded by the visitors and one can argue that Mellberg was lucky not to have been sent off for stopping a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Nonetheless, Juve scored the second before Vidal grabbed a third only two minutes later to make him the most effective player of Conte’s tenure at Juventus.

The Old Lady achieved her objective. Demonstrating superior technique and experience to handle these situations, they were the better team on the night and finally managed their first European win of the season.

With Real Madrid doing their part by defeating Galatasaray, 4-1, (highlights suggest it ought to have been more) Juventus now only need a point in Istanbul to seal qualification into the next round. It should have been easier for the Italian champions, but better late than never.

Gianluigi Buffon - The veteran shot-stopper had little to do in this game, with a smart save from Toutouh being the only real save he had to make.

Martín Cáceres - A solid performances from the Uruguayan, who stepped out of defence to make a good few interceptions in the later stages.

Leonardo Bonucci - Unlucky not to meet a couple of corner deliveries, and made a couple of good challenges to dispossess Jorgensen on the edge of the penalty area.

Giorgio Chiellini - A steady performance from the towering defender, who wasn't asked a great deal of questions throughout.

Simone Padoin - Provided a couple of crosses from the right hand side, but wasn't hugely involved and didn't provide a great deal of width either.

Paul Pogba - The Frenchman popped up everywhere on the field, producing an excellent assist for Vidal's third goal and being involved in winning Juventus' first penalty.

Andrea Pirlo - A sauntering performance from the veteran maestro, who made things look so easy with continual touches of quality and the ability to pick out any pass.

Arturo Vidal - An exceptional hat-trick, with the Chilean dispatching two penalties expertly, before clipping a fantastic header in off the crossbar to secure the win.

Kwadwo Asamoah - Offered plenty of pace and width in the first half and was a worthwhile outfit, but had less influence on the game as the match progressed.

Carlos Tévez - The Argentine linked up well with Llorente, but was often thwarted by good blocks from the Copenhagen defence.

Fernando Llorente - An excellent focal point for Juventus, as the ball stuck to the Spaniard brilliantly, allowing for him to bring other players into the game.

Johan Wiland - Another admirable performance from the Swedish goalkeeper, who made a few decent saves and commanded his area well.

Lars Jacobsen - Conceded the first penalty of the game, but was otherwise a hard-working example to the rest of his defence.

Pierre Bengtsson - Didn't have a great deal to do again Padoin, but was torn apart whenever the likes of Vidal or Tevez would burst into the channel.

Olof Mellberg - Finished excellently for Copenhagen's only goal of the game, firing beyond Buffon with a scissor-kick of sorts, before bringing down Llorente for a penalty moments later.

Ragnar Sigurdsson - Unfortunate not to bundle home a couple of half chances in goalmouth scrambles, the Icelandic defender made a couple of good interceptions.

Claudemir - Broke up play whenever possible, shielding his central defensive pairing as best as possible. Made one key tackle on the edge of the penalty area.

Thomas Delaney - Didn't create anything for his side, but worked hard to try and win the ball back from a Juventus midfield that was relentless throughout.

Christian Bolaños - Didn't have the same effect that he normally has from the bench, as the Costa Rica midfielder was substituted first due to being ineffectual.

Nicolai Jörgensen - His pace was a useful outlet for Copenhagen, and at times the Dane managed to get beyond Chiellini, but generally he was bullied by the Juventus defence.

Rurik Gislason - Was largely ineffectual as he didn't see much of the ball, but was positive whenever he gained possession and keen to beat his man.

Youssef Toutouh - The forward was the only player to test Buffon all game, and showed raw talent in odd flashes, in a much better showing then when he faced Galatasaray.

Chiellini: 'Juve have Euro regrets'

Giorgio Chiellini can’t help but feel “regret” that Juventus are still fighting for qualification after beating Copenhagen 3-1.

The Bianconeri will go through to the Champions League knockouts as long as they avoid defeat away to Galatasaray, as the Turkish side lost 4-1 to 10-man Real Madrid tonight.

“The result in Madrid does favour us, even if there is regret we aren’t already qualified due to the points we dropped along the way,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“Copenhagen clammed up very well and allowed us very little compared to the meeting in Denmark, when it really did look like a siege.

Chiellini also revealed the worst challenge of the night was from teammate Fernando Llorente, who collided with him in the scramble that led to the equaliser.

“I felt a hand in my face and assumed it was a Copenhagen player, but then realised it was Fernando! He has to be more careful when he comes in to help defend, as he should watch out who he crashes into... Looking at the replays, I did get a shove from an opponent too, but I’ve still given more than my fair share of those!”

The veteran defender feels the Italian sides have struggled more than usual in the Champions League this season due to their UEFA co-efficient.

“We could’ve had a kinder draw, as could Milan, though we also made life difficult for ourselves with some slip-ups in the group.

“Napoli were fourth seeds and were paired with two incredibly strong teams like Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, so now need a miracle to qualify.”

Copenhagen forward Nicolai Jorgensen could not hide his frustration after his side's hopes of making the last 16 of the Champions League were ended by a 3-1 defeat at Juventus.

The Danes fell behind 29 minutes in when Arturo Vidal converted a penalty after Lars Jacobsen had inexplicably handled in the area but they drew level early in the second half through Olof Mellberg.

However, FCK shot themselves in the foot once more then the latter hauled down Fernando Llorente in the area and Vidal slotted home once more, before adding a header moments later, to seal victory for the hosts and send the visitors crashing out.

"I feel quite bitter right now," Jorgensen told reporters after the game. "I'm annoyed by the defensive mistakes. I feel that we could have got more out of this match.

"We could have got at least a point. We created too few opportunities as well."

Copenhagen will, at least, go into their final game, against Real Madrid on December 10, knowing that a victory would secure them a place in the Europa League.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has lauded Fernando Llorente as the club's "weapon" on the back of a 3-1 win over Copenhagen on Wednesday.

The Spanish striker was a key focal point as the Bianconeri secured a comprehensive Champions League victory on home turf, though it was midfielder Arturo Vidal who grabbed the headlines with his hat-trick.

Bonucci was pleased with how he and his team-mates handled the anti-attacking tactics of the visitors and heralded Llorente for helping to break down the Danish side's defence.

Juve fans didn't stab Copenhagen man

Danish police claim the Copenhagen fan stabbed in Turin ahead of the Juventus match was injured in an altercation with other Danes.

The supporter told Exstrabladet he had been in a group of visiting supporters having breakfast when they were attacked by five or six people.

He decided not to press charges with the local police or even go to the A&E for medical treatment, preferring instead to attend the Champions League game.

Now La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport states Danish police confirmed the stabbing occurred during an altercation between drunken Copenhagen fans in Turin and did not involve any Juventus ultras.
