seven-game unbeaten run over struggling Sicilians

Juventus will attempt to extend their seven-match unbeaten run against Catania in Serie A when the two sides meet on Wednesday.

The reigning champions have not tasted defeat against the Sicilians since a 2-1 setback in December 2009, and won both of last season's league fixtures 1-0.

Juve have also lost just once in Serie A this term, and bounced back from their 4-2 defeat at Fiorentina - which they followed up with a 2-1 Champions League reverse at Real Madrid - with a comfortable 2-0 home success against Genoa on Sunday.

Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez got the goals at Juventus Stadium, and defender Giorgio Chiellini is confident the team can build on their performance after the disappointments of Florence and Madrid.

"We analysed everything over the past few days and saw that certain things could have gone differently," the Italy international said.

They have failed to win in their last three league fixtures, including a 0-0 stalemate with fellow strugglers Sassuolo on Sunday.

New Catania boss Luigi De Canio believes his side can beat Juventus when they face each other tomorrow evening.

The Elefanti host the Scudetto holders on Wednesday, and the new tactician, who was brought in earlier this month to replace Rolando Maran, is confident that his men can come away with all three points.

“Juve are a great team,” he told a Press conference. “You could see against Genoa at the weekend that they are playing at their best.

“But every game has its own story and we’ll try to play to win. We’ll do everything to get the three points.

Juventus stayed hot on the heels of Serie A leaders Roma with a massive 4-0 win over Catania in Turin on Wednesday.

Catania posed a threat on the counterattack early on, but Juventus took a deserved lead in the 26th minute as Carlos Tevez laid the ball off for Arturo Vidal on the edge of the area and his low strike found the net via two deflections.

Juve's second goal arrived only eight minutes later as Sergio Almiron tripped compatriot Tevez just outside the visitors' area and Andrea Pirlo placed the free kick into the top corner on his 100th appearance for the club.

The away side posed more of a threat after half-time, but Juve got the third goal in the 65th minute as Tevez went around the goalkeeper and slotted home following Fernando Llorente's knock-down.

A fourth duly arived with just under 20 minutes to go as substitute Sebastian Giovinco did well down the left before cutting back into the area for Leonardo Bonucci and the defender calmly found the net.

Catania's miserable night was compounded when Tiberio Guarente was sent off late on for a rash challenge on Claudio Marchisio.

Juventus had only lost once in their 12 league matches against Catania since 2006 and the visitors rarely looked like improving on that record as the champions controlled proceedings throughout.

Bianconeri hit four in easy win over Elefanti

Juventus smashed Catania 4-0 in a one-sided affair at the Juventus Stadium on Wednesday evening in Serie A.

A deflected Arturo Vidal effort, an Andrea Pirlo free kick, and second half strikes from Carlos Tevez and Leonardo Bonucci gave the Bianconeri a convincing victory over the Elefanti, who had Tiberio Guarente sent off late in the game.

The first opportunity fell to the home side after two minutes when Fernando Llorente linked up with Tevez on the edge of the Catania penalty area and the Argentinian fired a shot just over the bar. Juve controlled the opening exchanges and pressed forward with intent but efforts from Vidal and Pirlo did not trouble Mariano Andujar in the Catania goal.

After weathering the early storm the Elefanti had a brief period of looking more assured in possession and a counter attack resulted in a Gonzalo Bergessio shot which was deflected wide for a corner but De Canio’s men were unable to capitalise.

Juve again went on the attack with 20 minutes gone and a good cross from De Ceglie was met by Llorente who couldn’t direct his header on target.

The Bianconeri continued to assert their authority, however they had to rely on a slice of luck to take the lead on 27 minutes when Vidal fired a speculative shot from 20 yards which took a heavy deflection to deceive Andujar.

Sergio Almiron was then adjudged to have fouled Carlos Tevez on the edge of the Catania penalty area and Andrea Pirlo stepped up to curl in the resulting free-kick and give his side a commanding two goal advantage with 34 minutes played.

The remainder of the first half proved comfortable for the home side with Gianluigi Buffon having very little to deal with.

Catania started the second half the brighter of the two sides but were unable to make the most of several set pieces in threatening positions, while Bergessio also hit a tame effort straight at Buffon.

Juve looked happy to let their opponents keep possession and counter attack when possible. This was evident with two chances on 59 minutes when firstly Andujar had to be alert to beat Vidal to a Tevez through-ball and then Claudio Marchisio hit the post with a powerful effort from the left side of the penalty area.

Giorgio Chiellini had to be alert shortly after when a slip by Bonucci let in Almiron but Chiellini was able to avert the danger before the Argentinian could get a shot away.

The game was put beyond doubt on 66 minutes when Llorente beat Nicola Legrottaglie to the ball to play in Tevez who rounded Andujar and netted the Bianconeri’s third goal.

With the game secured Tevez was then replaced with Sebastian Giovinco who won a corner on 71 minutes and after playing a one-two from the set piece, the forward set up Bonucci for an easy finish to further extend Juve’s lead.

As the game moved into the final 10 minutes the pace had dropped considerably and things went from bad to worse for the Elefanti on 84 minutes when Tiberio Guarente was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a sliding challenge on Marchisio.

Giovinco forced Andujar into two smart saves late on but Juve were unable to increase their already comfortable lead.

Juve romp past Catania

The defending champions - upstaged by Roma so far this season - were never in danger from the moment Arturo Vidal put them ahead in the 27th minute.

Andrea Pirlo added a second in the 34th minute, before Carlos Tevez (66) and Leonardo Bonucci (71) made extra sure.

Catania's frustration at slipping into the bottom three was summed up by Tiberio Guarente's 84th-minute minute second yellow card.

Catania's and Guarente's night never really got going and Juve's opener had a touch of fortune about it.

Vidal took aim from 25 yards but as Guarente dived across him to try to block the shot, he only served to deflect it beyond Mariano Andujar in the away goal.

How do you follow up a dominating 2-0 win over Genoa? Well, with some more domination, of course. Juventus' 4-0 win over Catania on Wednesday night in Turin was exactly what you'd want to see when the top of the table meets a possible relegation contender — complete domination.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting the feeling that Juventus are enjoying the fact they're finally playing in front of their hometown crowd.

And luckily for Antonio Conte and his squad, they're going to be doing a lot of that before the next international break. Outside of the trip to Parma over the weekend, guess where Juventus will be playing the rest of their games before another two-week pause in the action? Yeah, that's right — Juventus Stadium.

•How do you know Fernando Llorente is getting closer and closer to being the Fernando Llorente of old? It was a relatively quiet and subdue game for the Lion King and he still had an impact in the game — an assist and also played a role in Juve's opener.

•Carlos Tevez keeps scoring goals. It's like every time he finds the back of the net he's giving the middle finger to the notion that some players take awhile to adjust to life in Serie A. Or something like that. Every goal that he scores, the price Juve paid for him looks more and more like an absolute steal.

•When I saw Paolo De Ceglie's name in the starting lineup, I didn't really know what to expect. His playing time has been so incredibly limited this season, how he'd play would be anybody's best guess. The end product, though, was a very pleasant surprise. His crosses were dangerous, his defensive effort wasn't disastrous, and resembled a player who had been getting consistent minutes this season. Kwadwo Asamoah gave Juve a presence on the left wing against Genoa, DJ Paulino just seemed to carry it over into the win over Catania.

•Sebastian Giovinco has done pretty well off the bench this season. I know he's been battling a bit of an injury — Conte said he's taking painkillers before every game — and being a second-half sub is probably not the role he'd chose compared to starting on a regular basis, but he's definitely settling nicely into this super-sub deal.

Two clean sheets in a row. It was what Juventus needed and what Antonio Conte wanted. A comprehensive 4-0 victory over Catania not only signals the beauty of Juve's game but it sends a clear signal to rivals: it’s never over until the Old Lady sings.

Over in Florence in the match between Fiorentina and Napoli, the fans held up a banner that read "Gomez not Tevez". But while their German striker sat to watch his side lose, somewhat controversially, the man they didn't want led his team to a spectacular victory. It's Tevez not Gomez... nor any other forward for that matter.

The Argentine behaved like a leader and with a passionate performance and tremendous skill guided his side forward -- partaking in most passages of good play Juventus created. Accuracy was perhaps his only problem on the night but his dogged determination, willingness to drop deep to collect the ball and then source goal scoring opportunities is the reason why he's the "top player" the fans have wanted and dreamt of all summer long. Whatever reservations one may have had on the player's mentality have been firmly put to bed -- Carlos Tevez wants a win at all costs.

Despite the magnificent result and the great opening few minutes, this was perhaps a less determined Juve. Asked about the difference in the level of intensity, Conte replied wisely, explaining that having played four games in 12 days, it's important to be mature and conserve energy.

Running at 200km per hour is the definition of Juve but they must also know when to push and when to take a breath. However, whilst it's clever to avoid expending too much energy against opponents capable of surrender, it's also important Juventus rid themselves of the sloppy play and silly mistakes committed, especially earlier on in the game.

Rather than take advantage of what looked like a shaky defence at times, Catania looked incapable of producing an inspired reaction. When Rolando Maran was shown the door, it was hoped his replacement Luigi De Canio would shock the team back to life -- something he hasn't been able to do yet. Barring the hard work of Gonzalo Bergessio and Keko (in the first half), few players actually fought for points. The defence produced a plethora of mistakes, the wide men rarely troubled Juve's wing-backs -- who are more than capable of succumbing to pressure -- whilst their attackers' capability to drift in and out of the game proved frustrating.

It's inconceivable to think that this was the same side that had previously improved upon the number of points collected in the league year by year. Collecting 48 under Vincenzo Montella, they managed 56 points under Maran last season. Now they're occupying a relegation spot.

Catania showed glimpses of what they can do, but psychologically they never believed in a point, let alone a win. Three matches played against the Sicilian side have resulted in three home wins for the Bianconeri. De Canio attempted to incite a positive reaction from his side when he decided to bring on Lucas Castro but whilst Bruno Petkovic and Sergio Almiron attempted to threaten Juve early in the second half, it was simply an easier option to surrender to the Old Lady's superiority.

The difficulties of the Sicilian side gave Conte the perfect opportunity to test out different players and few did as well as Paolo De Ceglie. A product of the Bianconeri youth system, the player's ability to deliver an accurate cross was a breath of fresh air for the side that has been forced to tolerate imprecision from the wide areas. Paying attention to his defensive duty, his work rate and ability to whiz forward reminded the coach that in De Ceglie, he possesses a fine alternative to Kwadwo Asamoah. If only Fernando Llorente did better to capitalise on the crosses delivered.

The Spaniard wasn't at his best but his partnership with Tevez is steadily improving as evidenced by Juve's third goal. On the upside, Juventus can instead count on another youth team product who has impressed in his recent outings. Sebastian Giovinco's forward runs threatened Real Madrid in the Champions League. His perfect finish against Milan justified Conte's decision to opt for quick feet instead of a tall head whilst tonight he once again proved his talent for pushing forward and overcoming defenders.

On form both physically and psychologically, Seba can offer the side a quality no other can in this forward line. Whilst it seemed the Juve jersey burdened him with excessive pressure, the desire to prove himself has provoked stunning performances. The question is, can he continue it? Despite the fans' disinterest in the player, Conte has always believed in the pint-sized forward and he may well be an intriguing figure to select in the upcoming match against Parma -- the player's former club.

Another win and a clean sheet against Roberto Donadoni's men would make it a perfect week for the Champions of Italy.

Gianluigi Buffon - The Juventus captain will not have many easier evenings than this and, aside from a few routine saves, he was hardly tested.

Martín Cáceres - The Uruguayan defender was caught out on the odd occasion by the Catania front line but on the whole, he did a good job in Barzagli's absence.

Leonardo Bonucci - Although he made the odd slip, the 26-year-old turned in an assured defensive performance and managed to score a rare goal when he swept home Giovinco's cutback from close range.

Giorgio Chiellini - The commanding centre-back was solid in the tackle, dominant in the air and anticipated the danger brilliantly in order to ensure another clean sheet.

Mauricio Isla - An average performance from Isla, who struggled to show the desire of De Ceglie to get forward. Was rarely beaten defensively but offered little in attack.

Claudio Marchisio - His search for a first league goal of the season nearly came to an end when a thumping shot cannoned back off the woodwork. Produced some neat touches and accurate passing in the midfield.

Andrea Pirlo - After a slow start, Pirlo once again pulled the strings in midfield and got on the scoresheet with a trademark free kick.

Arturo Vidal - The Chilean notched his fifth league goal of the season with a fortuitous deflected effort and his determination to get from box to box helped Juventus to dominate the midfield.

Paolo De Ceglie - Made a real impact in Asamoah's absence and as a result most of the Juventus attacks came down the left. His crossing with both feet was impressive.

Carlos Tévez - The Argentine continued his impressive start to the season with two assists and a goal. His intelligent movement caused the Catania backline all sorts of problems.

Fernando Llorente - Although he lacked a clinical edge in front of goal, his hold-up play and understanding with Tevez was a highlight for Juventus fans.

Marco Motta - Came on as a late substitute but did not have enough time to make a significant contribution.

Paul Pogba - The France midfielder was handed a rest as he has played more minutes than any other Juventus player this season. Came on after the hour mark to add stability to the midfield.

Sebastian Giovinco - The striker was unlucky not to mark his 100th Juventus appearance with a goal. His persistence and nimble footwork ensured he was a constant threat and he was the architect for Bonucci's goal.

Mariano Gonzalo Andújar - The Argentine goalkeeper was unlucky with Vidal's deflected strike though his positioning was questionable for Pirlo's free kick. Made several good saves to deny Giovinci late on.

A. Rolín - Struggled to cope with the movement of Tevez and it was no surprise that he was eventually substituted.

Nicola Legrottaglie - The former Juventus man could not prevent his side leaking four goals and although he turned in an impressive aerial performance, he was often caught out of position.

P. Álvarez - Took the armband in Izco's absence but found himself exposed by De Ceglie down the right on numerous occasions.

Norbert Gyömbér - The young Slovakian defender struggled at times with the physical presence of Llorente but showed several glimpses of his undoubted potential.

Cristiano Biraghi - The on-loan Inter wide man offered no attacking threat in the first half and was duly substituted at half-time.

Sergio Bernardo Almiron - The experienced Argentine found it difficult to restrict the Juventus midfield and his foolish trip on Tevez led to the second goal.

Tiberio Guarente - He will miss Catania's next game against Napoli after he was foolishly dismissed when picking up a yellow card for a needless challenge on Marchisio.

Gonzalo Bergessio - He worked tirelessly in a bid to create openings up front and looked effective despite the little service he was given. He combined well at times with Petkovic.

Keko - He looked Catania's brightest spark going forward in the first half with his intelligence and creativity. However, he was asked to help contain De Ceglie in the second half, which limited his attacking impact.

Bruno Petkovic - The 19-year-old Croatian was handed a rare start and although he looked lively, he should have repaid his coach's faith as he spurned Catania's best two chances of the game.

Juventus boss Antonio Conte has expressed his happiness that his team have re-discovered their defensive solidity following the 4-0 victory over Catania in Turin on Wednesday.

Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo fired the Bianconeri to a 2-0 half-time lead, before further strikes from Carlos Tevez and Leonardo Bonucci added gloss to the scoreline.

It was the defensive aspect of his team's performance which seemingly left the biggest impression, though, as Conte revelled in watching his team keep the opposition at bay for the second successive game following the 2-0 win over Bologna.

After defeats to Fiorentina and Real Madrid, Juventus are back to their ruthless best. Saturday's 2-0 win over Genoa was followed by a 4-0 hammering of Catania on Wednesday.

“We put together two positive performances and we needed to keep two clean sheets in a row,” insisted Coach Antonio Conte.

His delight at the clean sheets is understandable. Before facing Genoa, Juventus had kept just two in all competitions.

With Carlos Tevez scoring freely - he has six in 13 - and the Bianconeri tighter defensively, seven days that include ties with Real Madrid and Napoli can be faced head on.

Understandably, Conte will rotate to face Parma. Andrea Pirlo, Leonardo Bonucci and Fernando Llorente are rested, with Mauricio Isla, Angelo Ogbonna and Sebastian Giovinco - against his former club - starting.

The Ducali, however, should not be underestimated. Roberto Donadoni's side save their best for the big games. A draw at Fiorentina and victory over Milan are testament to that.

At the Stadio Ennio Tardini, they are strong. Only Roma have left victorious. Even then, Parma at least scored - a feat no other side has managed as yet against the Giallorossi. Parma pose a threat to the Old Lady this weekend after their sensational victory over Milan with Marco Parolo's last-minute golazo.

Fernando Llorente has been good, if not spectacular, while Fabio Quagliarella and Mirko Vucinic have been injured—both of whom could stake claims to start ahead of the Spaniard when fit.

The former Athletic star is under fierce competition from Sebastian Giovinco, with Formica Atomica offering more fluidity and athleticism next to Carlos Tevez.

From the Bianconeri So Far

Two back-to-back losses have caused the frequent and unnecessary use of the word ‘crisis.’ “It’s a joke” muttered Conte, the manager clearly under the impression that his team aren’t in a situation that needs the pressing of the ‘Panic’ button. Such was the hyperbole thrown around that the media would have you believe that Conte was walking on eggshells. Lest we forget this was the same coach that not too long ago completely turned around the fortunes of Juventus.

A bit of perspective thrown in and Juventus are third in the league, level on points with Napoli, goal difference the only dividing factor. Five points off the leaders Roma. The Giallorossi’s perfect record though perhaps shadows the start Napoli and Juventus have made to the season and that is understandable given their on the verge of making history.

Below are three observations from Juventus’ season thus far:


A Pressing Matter

Great teams of the modern era have built their success on pressing. Closing down spaces in advanced positions, almost coercing your opponents into conceding possession has been the trademark of recent successes such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona. For two seasons, Juventus adopted the same method. Conte’s teams were renowned for their energy and ruthless hunting off the ball yet that very tactic that provided a path to success seems to have gotten lost.

It’s that willingness to sacrifice for the team and to play for each other than separated Juventus from the rest yet it’s that very attitude that has gone missing. You can attribute the added number of competitions for this sudden departure of the ‘pressing’. Maybe Conte wants his team to play with less intensity so as to preserve a bit of fuel in the tank as they fight for honors on three fronts. That is certainly a justifiable alibi but they’re outings in the Champions League barring the game against Madrid too have lacked hunger and intensity while the results have been all too disappointing.


Tactical Tweaks – Time To Embrace An Old Friend

When Conte took charge at Juve, he arrived with a reputation as a stubborn manager unwilling to do away with his strict 4-2-4 formation. But that notion was quickly dispelled as Conte made the best out of the players available to him and quickly changed systems. Variations of a 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 were all employed and to good effect as was attested by their historic invincible season.

Since the Napoli game at the San Paolo though, Conte has found faith in a 3-5-2 formation. It was a system that allowed him to field 11 of his strongest players in the squad and for a while it was the talk of the town. The 3-5-2 was tailor-made for teams in Serie A, teams that don’t necessarily play with wingers. The dearth of quality full-backs probably is responsible for most teams shifting to a back three and wing-backs. ‘You make the most of what you have’, it’s a simple mantra that managers around the peninsula have obeyed.

Now Europe’s a whole different ball game. A formation with no orthodox full-backs will inevitably be exposed by continental sides who boast of fierce, flashy wingers. Bayern Munich tore Juventus apart down the flanks last seasons. It was evident that a 3-5-2 would always fall short defensively against advanced technical wingers. That need to change was recognized by Conte who spoke earlier in the week of the ineffectiveness of the 3-5-2 in Europe.

And so he embraced an old friend. The 4-3-3 came back into his life and while the result against Madrid was less than desired, the performance was encouraging. Juventus looked solid and even when they unfortunately went a man down, they rarely looked overwhelmed. The 4-3-3 offers width that the 3-5-2 lacks and as Juventus prepare themselves for three must-win games, Conte should revisit his old acquaintance to help guide his team through.


Carlos Tevez – Like Casing On A Sausage

The anticipation that surrounded Tevez’s arrival was almost at zenith and the expectations were massive, add in the fabled no.10 jersey he would don and you’d hope for his sake Tevez would repay the faith shown in him. And he has done so, emphatically. The sprightly Argentina has taken no time to settle in and with a return of 6 goals in 10 games, he’s risen to become a fan favorite.

Tireless energy and admirable work-rate has been the theme of his career and it’s these traits that have already made him a hit in Turin. With plenty of fire in his belly, Tevez looks content with Juventus and keeping El Apache happy ensures a determined striker that on his day can wreak havoc to any defense.

What also works in his favor is the slow yet gradual integration of Fernando Llorente. The Spanish striker is a mountain of a man and a force that is unique in Serie A. Conte has certainly taken his time in incorporating Llorente but his decision has been warranted. Llorente is slowly but surely coming up to speed, the signs were optimistic against Madrid and Genoa.

Displays against Genoa and Catania will be morale boosters but these are teams you’d expect them to defeat without much fuss. There are still plenty of sterner tests to come with their most important game of the season against Real Madrid just around the corner. Instead of playing with full bellies, that hunger and humility needs to re-emerge if they are to smile at the end of what will be a very long campaign. The recent signs will encourage Conte and if his side manage to maintain that mentality, they could be on the verge of something truly special.

I know what is happening on Tuesday. You know what is happening on Tuesday. Antonio Conte and his players know what is happening on Tuesday. All of us know what's at stake when Juventus take the Juventus Stadium field in three days against Real Madrid.

There's just one thing: Real Madrid aren't Juve's immediate problem. Cristiano Ronaldo and his friends are just chillin' in the back of everybody's mind, waiting just a few hours to become the thing that everybody, no matter what age they are, will be talking about for three straight days. That's what the Champions League does to ya, folks. It makes you think about it...all... the ...time.

HOWEVER...

Juventus travel to the Tardini on Saturday evening to face Roberto Donadoni and Parma — who just so happen to have the same exact amount of points so far this season as a certain named AC Milan. Last weekend we had the game after the game. Now it's the game before the game.

Thoughts about Real Madrid may be floating around. That's fair, and completely understandable. I mean, it's Real Madrid in a incredibly important Champions League game that could very well determine if Juve make it to the knockout stages or are bound for the Europa League. But, for the time being, Conte's eyes are cast solely on Parma. At least they say they are. If they actually are looking ahead, they certainly aren't making it seem that way.

Then again, if anybody is choosing to talk Real Madrid over the game before Real Madrid, I'd like to think Conte would hit them over the head with a baseball bat just so they're able to reconfigure their thoughts. As cliche as it may sound, it's one game at a time for this Juve team right now with so many fixtures coming at such a rapid pace.

That's good news. Now it's just time to prove their words are actually the truth.


GOOD NEWS

The simple numbers from Juventus' last three games: Eight goals scored, two goals allowed. Sure, Juve aren't playing Real Madrid every three or four days, but the numbers are the numbers. There are a handful of reasons why Conte's men are back to playing some good football. One of the biggest has to be Juve getting their goal differential figure back to one that resembles how the team has played on the field post-Fiorentina meltdown.

BAD NEWS

Maybe it's just a gut feeling, but I never assume playing Parma is a lock to win. Maybe I should feel like it is because Juventus are a pretty darn good team and have been getting better these last few games. But it's just one of those games over the years that has never been a sure thing — especially when it's at the Tardini.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. How much squad rotation there is in anticipation of Real Madrid on Tuesday.

There's no denying that it's going to happen. Real Madrid is lurking a few days away and I feel safe in saying we all know the importance that comes with Tuesday night's match at Juventus Stadium. But, for now, the objective is tomorrow night against Parma. The question is this: What will the squad look like compared to the basically full-strength side that beat Cagliari 4-0 on Wednesday? The lineup will look different. To what extent, though, is still uncertain...

2. Sebastian Giovinco against his former club.

The majority of folks have a hunch that Sebastian Giovinco will get the start against Parma tomorrow. I don't disagree with them — especially since both Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente have handled the bulk of the minutes since Juve returned from the international break and there's a pretty important game in three days. Somebody is likely to be rested, and because there are still just four healthy strikers right now, Giovinco will almost certain step in for either one of them. And, according to Conte, the foot problem that has hampered Giovinco the last couple of weeks is much improved.

Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but that quote from Conte's pre-game press conference sounds like Super Seba will be playing a little more than he has been come Saturday at his old stomping grounds.

3. The sudden resurgence of Mauricio Isla.

When you reach the point where even some of your most staunch supporters are wondering whether or not you're fit for a club like Juventus, you know there's definitely something wrong. That was what came along with Isla a month or so ago. He was struggling — badly. He wasn't just playing like the Isla of last season, but one a step or two below that. The last couple of games, however, haven't been the disastrous or unimpressive version of Isla we've seen a good portion of his short Juve career. He hasn't been out-of-this-world good, but still productive on the right wing. And with Stephan Lichtsteiner still trying to regain some kind of full fitness, it seems like it's Isla's job to lose for the time being.

I mean, we could have Marco Motta playing on a regular basis. Who wants that to happen? (Don't answer that.)

4. The always unpredictable brilliance of Antonio Cassano.

It's hard to believe that Cassano is 31 years old. And it's hard to believe that, at the age of 31 and still in the prime of his career, Cassano and his immense talent is playing for a club destined for a mid-table finish rather than one challenging for a title. So is the career ark of one of the most gifted Italian strikers we've seen come through the ranks the past 15 years. Even though he's not at a big club anymore, it doesn't mean he's not productive. Don't believe, click on this link and look at the graphic. He may be filling out his jersey a little more than he did in the past, but he's still a dangerous player. Conte knows what's up.

The club celebrated their 116th anniversary this week and a win over Parma and indeed Madrid would be the perfect gift to the fans.

Parma are not genuine contenders for a European spot and neither are they relegation candidates. Team News and Tactical Brief

Parma snatched a last gasp winner at home to Milan to only concede defeat to Genoa during midweek. While the Tardini based side are expected to finish in and around mid-table, they’ll view the loss against a struggling Genoa team as a disappointment. Roberto Donadoni’s side are definitely capable of producing an upset and with a few ex-Juventus players on board, motivation won’t particularly be an issue.

With a 3-5-2 formation that mirrors Antonio Conte’s, you can expect a cagey match. Strength of Parma’s play comes from the tireless forays made by Jonathan Biabiany. The Frenchman was pursued by Juventus during the mercato, if rumors are to be believed and this season he’s showing just why he was so highly coveted. A goal and an assist each don’t do justice to the impact he’s had with his pace and ability.

Lest we forget, Antonio Cassano is the creative fulcrum of the Ducali. Everything good in attack comes through the magical feet of FantAntonio. Cassano called the Juventus players ‘soldiers’ last season and certainly garnered controversy yet again. He’ll have a point to prove against the Bianconeri as will his strike partner, Amauri. The Italo-Brazilian suffered a lot during his stint at Juventus and was targeted by fans for his stale performances. He’s yet to break his duck this season and you can bet he’ll give it everything he can against his old side.

Two home wins over lowly Genoa and Catania have gone a long way in restoring confidence after the Fiorentina and Madrid debacles. More importantly, they were two victories in which Juventus completely dominated; a throwback to Conte’s first season in Turin and managed to keep clean-sheets, a rare occurrence with the Old Lady these days. Andrea Barzagli was rested then and should start against Parma while Bonucci is expected to make way for Angelo Ogbonna. Conte confirmed the return of Fabio Quagliarella but remained uncertain about Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mirko Vucinic.

Mauricio Isla will continue to deputize in Lichtsteiner’s expected absence. The much maligned Chilean put in two solid displays against Genoa and Catania and a good run of games may just be what he needs to impress the manager.
