Juve Coach Antonio Conte hit out at criticism this weekend, claiming it represented “the enemy trying to destabilise us.”

The second consecutive Champions League draw, 2-2 with Galatasaray, fuelled murmurs around the Bianconeri side.

Mirko Vucinic and Stephan Lichtsteiner join Simone Pepe and Martin Caceres on the injury list, so Fabio Quagliarella partners Carlos Tevez.

Simone Padoin takes the wide right role in place of Lichtsteiner with Paul Pogba rested.

It has been a spectacular first half in Turin with Sulley Muntari scoring after 19 seconds and Andrea Pirlo making it 1-1.

This is traditionally one of the classics in Italian football, though both teams were eager to answer critics after this week’s results. Juve were held to a 2-2 draw by Galatasaray, while the Rossoneri stalled against Ajax and had only eight points from six Serie A rounds.

Andrea Pirlo got them back on level terms, as Abbiati performed heroics before then, but was taken completely by surprise on the free kick. It dipped over the wall and he was not placed well, flapping a weak hand at the ball. However, Milan protested that it should not have been a free kick, let alone a booking for Nigel De Jong on Carlos Tevez.

Leonardo Bonucci ran a risk with a slight head-butt on Robinho, but the Brazilian tried to make the most of it. Cristian Zapata had a rare shot on goal, forcing Buffon to fingertip wide, then Tevez fell under pressure from Kevin Constant, but the referee waved play on.

Juventus continued to put pressure on second-placed Napoli after a superb second-half performance helped them to a 3-2 win over AC Milan.

The visitors made the perfect start when Sulley Muntari's opener with just 20 seconds on the clock stunned the home crowd, but Andrea Pirlo levelled matters 14 minutes later before Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini turned things around after the break.

Milan were always facing an uphill struggle when Philippe Mexes was sent off with 15 minutes to play, and a late Muntari second proved scant consolation.

Simone Padoin, Claudio Marchisio and Fabio Quagliarella all came into the Juventus starting line-up as boss Antonio Conte made changes after their disappointing draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Massimiliano Allegri made two alterations from his side's 1-1 draw against Ajax, with Antonio Nocerino named in midfield and Alessandro Matri coming in to face his former club, for the suspended Mario Balotelli.

Juventus' hangover from European action continued as they fell asleep inside the first minute to go behind after just 20 seconds as Nocerino's wayward shot found Muntari at the far post and the midfielder side-footed the ball past the helpless Gianluigi Buffon.

Quagliarella had a glorious chance to level as Juve sought a response, but he lent back at the pivotal moment, before Kwadwo Asamoah stung Christian Abbiati's palms as the goalkeeper turned the ball over for a corner.

The equaliser was not long in coming, however, as Pirlo pulled the home side level in the 15th minute with a free kick that found the bottom corner after Nigel de Jong had brought down Carlos Tevez.

The experienced midfielder curled the ball expertly over the wall, although Abbiati could have done better as he palmed the ball into the net.

The frantic pace eventually subsided, although Juventus had strong penalty claims turned down when Tevez was brought down inside the box just before the break - the Argentine striker's appeals waved away after Kevin Constant's apparent push.

Tempers flared early in the second half when Mexes punched Chiellini, although amazingly the referee failed to spot the incident and the Milan defender escaped punishment.

With both sides cancelling each other out, Conte threw on Giovinco to replace Quagliarella soon after - and within a few minutes the forward had repaid that faith.

The Italy international picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box after 69 minutes following more Juventus pressure, before finding room to smash his shot into the bottom corner.

The game swung further in Juve's favour when Mexes was sent off for a second yellow card - failing to escape for a second time after a foul on Giovinco on the edge of the box.

And when Chiellini added a third from the resulting free-kick, reacting first after Pirlo's brilliant effort had cannoned back off the crossbar, the victory was secured.

There was still time for Muntari to add a second for Milan when his deflected effort surprised Buffon at the near post, but Juve held on in a nervous last minute.

Buffon had to sprint off his line to deflect Robinho’s angled drive across the face of goal when sent clear by a through ball.

A Nigel De Jong volley flew wide, but Abbiati parried an effort from Paul Pogba and Asamoah sent the follow-up off target.

Sebastian Giovinco came off the bench and after one minute and 46 seconds had scored a great goal. He ran on to an Arturo Vidal assist, dummied Zapata and kept his cool to place the angled drive across Abbiati. Antonio Conte celebrated wildly and shouted at the fans behind him, who have often jeered the Atomic Ant.

Mexes had avoided a red card earlier, but was sent off for two yellows in quick succession. The first was for a foul on Giovinco, followed immediately by another for dissent.

From that free kick caused by Mexes, Pirlo curled on to the crossbar and Chiellini was first on to the ricochet in order to make it 3-1 for Juventus.

It still wasn’t over, as Muntari pulled one back for the Rossoneri in the final minute when his snapshot took a deflection off Bonucci’s heel to surprise Buffon at the near post.

Milan almost got it back to 3-3 deep into stoppages, but the Zapata diving header from a corner was over the bar.

Bianconeri see off spirited Rossoneri challenge

Juventus defeated AC Milan 3-2 at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday night in Serie A.

Goals from Andrea Pirlo, Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini were enough to give the Bianconeri victory in an entertaining contest in which Sulley Muntari scored two for the Rossoneri.

With the rain lashing down in Turin the Rossoneri set the pace for the match with the visitors taking the lead within 20 seconds of the start as Muntari showed quick feet to divert an off target drive from Antonio Nocerino past Gianluigi Buffon.

As the Bianconeri quickly pressed for the equaliser they should have been on level terms when Arturo Vidal played a meticulous pass to Fabio Quagliarella only for the Italian to choose power rather than precision as the Chilean had and drove high over the bar.

On 14 minutes the hosts were level. Carlos Tevez heading towards the Milan box went down under the faintest of challenges from Nigel De Jong, from the resulting free-kick Pirlo curled a shot through insufficient Rossoneri wall and Christian Abbiati could only help it into the net.

Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci risked leaving his side a man short after Robinho made the most of the defender pushing his forehead into the face of the Brazilian, however, considering the referee saw the incident, only booked the Italian.

In the 26th Milan’s Cristian Zapata, having obviously taken heart from counterpart Chiellini stinging the hands of Abbiati from distance earlier, carried the ball to the edge of Juventus area and shooting across Buffon who pushed round his right-hand post for a corner.

As the first-half reached its conclusion Kevin Constant nearly undid the Diavolo’s good work by nudging Tevez inside the area. Despite making more contact that when he was booked for a foul on the Argentine early in the game the referee waved play on.

It was Milan who had the better of the opening exchanges as the second half got underway. Alessandro Matri slide in Robinho, but as he attempted to poke the pall past Buffon the Italy captain made an excellent one-handed save.

The introduction of Paul Pogba saw the Old Lady press Masimiliano Allegri’s side with greater intensity and the home side could have taken the lead on 66 minutes, but Kwadwo Assamoah’s drive whistle past the post without anyone able to make contact.

It was actually fellow substitute Giovinco who made the biggest impact. As the Bianconeri midfielder recycled the ball it found it’s way to the diminutive Italian on the edge of the box and he quickly wriggled past the Milan defenders and fired low past Abbiati.

With 15 minutes left things went from bad to worse for the Rossoneri as Philippe Mexes was sent off after receiving two cautions in quick succession. Milan were then punished once more from the free-kick as Pirlo struck the bar and Chiellini returned the ball first time into an unguarded net to put the game out of reach.

In the final minute and the game seemingly slipping away from the Rossoneri Muntari edge towards the Juventus penalty area and unleashed a fierce drive that took a deflection past the dive of Buffon to give them the faintest hope of a late comeback, but it was not to be.

Initial reaction and random observations

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Antonio Conte's plan wasn't something along the lines of "Hey, guys, go ahead and concede a goal 30 seconds into the game so we have 89 minutes or so to mount a comeback."

But with Milan scoring the game's opening goal all of 24 seconds in Sunday's game, that was exactly the case, as Juventus fell behind once again in front of their home crowd.

Unfortunately, it's also one we've gotten used to seeing. Dammit.

Juventus were forced to once again come back as they've been forced to do a good portion of the time this season. Andrea Pirlo reminded us all — with a little help from Christian Abbiati — why you must always respect Zona Pirlo. And then, in a matter of six whole minutes, we saw Juve go from a drab 1-1 tie to a 3-1 lead on goals from Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini.

It was basically the same as Juve has been doing lately in Serie A — not much, but just enough to be able to get the win and three points to keep pace with Roma and Napoli. This team clearly needs to pick things up and notch or two, and maybe the international break is coming at a good time just so some players — even those on international duty — can reset and refresh a little bit.

Either way, I'll take the three points. It wasn't pretty by any means. It's not one Antonio Conte is going to keep and show his grandchildren in 30 years. But with the way Juventus started the game, it could have been a lot, a lot worse.

Random thoughts and observations

•You'd expect a five-goal game to be a little more entertaining and captivating, right? It's not like I was sitting on the edge of my seat or anything like that. Thanks, guys!

•Juventus have now conceded eight goals in seven games. For some clubs that'd be an acceptable figure at this point in the season, but for one that has been so good on the defensive side of the ball the last two years, it's just completely baffling.

•That brings us to the mandatory talk of how Juve shot themselves in the foot yet again. The opening goal was just an entire lackadaisical team effort. The second came off an incredibly bad turnover from Paul Pogba. It's just more of the same when it comes to the kinds of mistakes that are really starting to catch up with Juve. Maybe in previous years they were able to recover and not have the opponent kill them, but this season is completely different. If Juve makes a mistake in their own half of the field, it's coming back to bite them.

Just imagine how things would have been like if Juve allowed an equalizer in extra time and finished with a 3-3 draw going into the international break. Yeah, no bueno.

•Kwadwo Asamoah rediscovered a little bit of what made him so good in the first half of last season. It's been a while since we've seen him cutting in from the left wing and taking shots on goal like was the cas against Milan. And with his right foot, too. I know he's quite reliant on his natural left foot, but it was definitely nice to see a change.

•I'm happy for Sebastian Giovinco. You should be, too. Antonio Conte certainly is.

Conte: What interests me is that my men are always ready to make a contribution. That’s why I’m particularly happy for Giovinco. #JuveMilan

•Outside of the boneheaded turnover that lead to Milan's second goal, the use of Pogba as a wingback on the right flank was definitely an interesting choice by Conte. Who knows how much we will see of it going forward, but it definitely had a positive impact on a Juve side that was in need of a second-half boost.

•Max Allegri thinks Philippe Mexes didn't throw a punch, huh? Maybe he should drop this whole managing thing which isn't going so well right now and start a stand-up comedy routine.

•Chiellini scored his goal all of a minute after Mexes got sent off. If you want an example of poetic justice, there's the best kind.

Juventus Edge Out Milan

Juventus overcame the earliest of setbacks to beat 10-man AC Milan 3-2 and keep runaway Serie A leaders Roma in check.

The capital club shocked Inter Milan 3-0 at San Siro on Saturday night to leave Juve and Napoli five points adrift and, after the Azzurri managed to narrow the gap with a 4-0 win over Livorno, the Turin club's quest to catch up started poorly.

Sulley Muntari gave Milan the lead after only 19 seconds of play at the Juventus Stadium but Andrea Pirlo soon levelled with a free-kick against his former club.

For a while the game seemed to be heading towards a bad-tempered draw, until Sebastian Giovinco scored from the bench with Giorgio Chiellini compounding Milan's misery after visiting defender Philippe Mexes was sent off after an hour.

Muntari would double his personal tally on the stroke of full time but it was too little, too late for Milan.

Juve's first appointment after the international break takes them to Fiorentina and they will hope Roma and Napoli cancel each other out in their meeting at the Stadio Olimpico.

Milan, however, can only dream of a title challenge after their third league defeat of the season left them floundering in 12th place.

It was always going to be an eventful night in Turin but Muntari ensured it would be a contest inside 20 seconds.

The Ghanaian was aided by Kwadwo Asamoah's poor positioning when sliding Antonio Nocerino's pass underneath an incredulous Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus' response was furious and immediate and only Christian Abbiati stood between the hosts and their determination to fight back.

The Milan goalkeeper punched an Asamoah rocket over the bar before pouncing on Chiellini's screamer from the edge of the area.

He had longer to think about Juve's next effort, but it was the one that beat him.

In the 15th minute Pirlo stood quietly over the ball while Nigel De Jong argued he had not fouled Carlos Tevez. Moments later he was steering the ball over the wall and home off Abbiati's flapping glove.

Leonardo Bonucci then managed to avoid a red card - escaping with yellow - after headbutting Robinho but three minutes before the break Juve thought they had grounds for a penalty when Kevin Constant nudged Tevez over in the box.

Referee Gianluca Rocchi was not interested and the scores were level at half-time.

Mexes copied Bonucci's antics following the restart, covertly punching Chiellini's shoulder while Rocchi was distracted.

Then in the 53rd minute, Buffon saved Juve from falling behind again when winning a tense one-on-one with the tricky Robinho.

The Bianconeri began to wrest back control of proceedings and substitute Paul Pogba soon stung Abbiati's palms with a swerving strike.

That disappointment prompted Juve coach Antonio Conte to throw Giovinco into the action and one minute and 48 seconds later his decision was justified.

In his first foray forward, the diminutive Italy international dummied two sliding Rossoneri defenders to slam home a magnificent effort.

Milan's challenge continued to fall apart as Mexes earned the red card he had perhaps deserved 15 minutes earlier. Minutes after fouling Giovinco he saw a second yellow for dissent, leaving the visitors a man short and wide open.

The dismissal saw Pirlo lining up another free-kick and, after his attempt clattered off the bar, Chiellini got down to slide home a decisive third for the delirious hosts.

But Juve failed to properly close ranks as full-time drew closer and Muntari was afforded space to drive in a late goal off Bonucci that offered Milan a shred of comfort from their latest league defeat.

Juve struggle in overcoming 10-man Milan

Sometimes one learns from defeat, but Juventus will have to postpone the lesson. A 3-2 victory over an average Milan should not be celebrated -- not when the away side were allowed to safely contain the pressure and impose their own danger. Juventus may have been marginally better but they need to drastically improve should they wish to win a trophy this season.

The stadium was stunned. The fans uncomfortably shifted in their seats. Conceding first has become a disease Juventus cannot cure and it took 19 seconds for Milan to go 1-0 up.

The recovery took a few minutes but when the Bianconeri awoke from their nightmare, they viciously pushed forward to exploit the gaping holes within the Rossoneri defence. Fabio Quagliarella missed a great chance and the Bianconeri's fast tempo saw their opponents struggle to maintain possession.

Yet despite looking faster and fitter, Juve still struggled to impose their strength and convert their chances. The midfield, once the pride and joy of the Turin giants, looked absent-minded and disinterested. By contrast, Juve could rely on their warrior up top, Carlos Tevez, who worked tirelessly to get his team back in the game. His mobility, strength on the ball and individual technique troubled the weak Milan back-line.

With Andrea Pirlo so closely marked, the Rossoneri asked Riccardo Montolivo to follow him around like a bad smell. So concerned were Milan with their former player's ability, that they failed to properly close down Juve's alternatives pushing through. Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci were often found going forward without a single effort made to close them down, yet they couldn’t help in getting that equaliser.

As usual, chances were frequently created but hardly finished. It took a goalkeeping error and a good Andrea Pirlo free-kick to rescue Juve's situation and allow them their much needed equaliser.

The second half brought with it more drama and more Juve imprecision. Taking long to settle back into the game, Antonio Conte made a wise move when he chose to take off the ineffective Simone Padoin for Paul Pogba. The Frenchman took his place in the wide area -- a position in desperate need of genuine quality. His ability to penetrate, deliver accurate balls and stretch the defence made all the difference.

Considering, as noted before, the Rossoneri's capability of conceding headed goals, most fans in the stadium were hoping Fernando Llorente would arrive on to the pitch. Instead, the coach opted to bring on the pint-sized Sebastian Giovinco, to the disbelief of many. The diminutive attacker was never going to head in a goal but the tactician hoped his mobility and close control would devastate the Milanese back-line, and Conte proved to be correct. Less than 120 seconds after coming on, Giovinco exhibited strength and calm to dummy Cristian Zapata and score Juve's second to repay the coach's faith in him.

Giovinco also succeeded in getting Philippe Mexes sent off. Receiving a yellow card for fouling the Juve player, it's assumed the Frenchman received a second yellow for dissent. Mexes was lucky to still be on the pitch at that point as the officials missed his punch on Chiellini in the penalty box earlier in the game.

Another Pirlo free-kick rattled the crossbar before Chiellini scored from the rebound to send the Bianconeri 3-1 up. Juve were improving; Arturo Vidal looked to have woken up and Conte's team finally looked capable of finishing the game off. That is until Sulley Muntari, who scored his side's first goal, exploited an error to manage a second and make the end a nervy affair for the home crowd.

The Old Lady was far from her best but she did enough to collect the three points. Yet when considering the absences of Massimiliano Allegri's Milan, Conte would have hoped for a better performance from his men. Juve are simply not a team to fear at this moment in time. The quality within the side should mean they win with greater ease yet there seems to be a constant struggle.

Meanwhile the frequency and manner in which they concede goals has proved frightening. Muntari's goal was met with a roll of the eyes by Conte. What once looked like an impenetrable defence now looks easy to overcome. Individual mistakes must be avoided while the side lost their defensive shape far too often to spark concern. Unless these points are addressed, the struggle will continue.

However, as long as maximum points are achieved, one cannot complain too much. The fans, as well as Conte, simply hope the squad can rediscover their ability to win matches in comfortable fashion again.

Juve Get Big Win over Milan

Juventus overcame goals in the first and last minutes from Sulley Muntari to claim a 3-2 victory against archrivals AC Milan in Turin on Sunday.

Juve, looking to move back within two points of Serie A leaders AS Roma, suffered an immediate setback when Muntari scored the fastest goal of the season so far after just 19 seconds.

But goals from Andrea Pirlo and substitute Sebastian Giovinco—who scored within a minute of his introduction—turned matters around for Antonio Conte’s side with 20 minutes remaining.

Milan defender Philippe Mexes was shown a red card following a foul on Giovinco and subsequent display of dissent in an indiscretion that was compounded when Pirlo hit the bar with the subsequent free-kick and Giorgio Chiellini powered home the rebound.

Juventus looked comfortable from that point onward until Muntari scored a deflected second in the final minute of normal time, but when Cristian Zapata headed over from a corner in the fourth and final minute of extra time, Conte and his men were finally able to celebrate.

Not for the first time this season, Juventus found themselves behind in a league encounter—but this time it took just 19 seconds. AC Milan kicked off and immediately pressed forward, with the ball eventually making its way to Robinho on the edge of the box.

The Brazilian unleashed a truly terrible attempt on goal but one that worked as a perfect pass to Muntari, who was lingering at the far post. Played on by the inattentive Asamoah, Muntari hit a first-time shot that caught Buffon by surprise and beat him at his near post.

The goal was not symptomatic of an impressive start to the contest, as from that moment both sides struggled to find their rhythm. Carlos Tevez showed some threat in attack, but Christian Abbiati was just about equal to any long-range attempts Juventus managed.

In the end, it was a former Milan player who grabbed the equaliser. After Tevez was fouled in the middle of the pitch about 25 yards out, Pirlo duly stepped up and curled a beautiful free-kick that beat the wall and Abbiati—although replays showed the goalkeeper perhaps should have kept it out.

Juventus, while marginally superior, continued to struggle to create clear-cut opportunities from open play, not helped by Arturo Vidal’s uncharacteristically subpar display. But the second half introduction of Paul Pogba seemed to change matters, as the Frenchman moved to right wing-back and proceeded to offer his side’s best attacking outlet.

It was Conte’s second substitute, however, who would give Juve the lead. Brought on in the 68th minute, Giovinco needed barely a minute to receive the ball on the edge of the box, showing remarkable poise to slip around Zapata’s challenge and fire an off-balance shot beyond Abbiati.

It was a moment of sublime skill to break the draw.

It soon got even better for Juventus. Giovinco was again at the heart of matters, wriggling free of Mexes’ attention 30 yards out and being brought down by the Frenchman. Mexes was booked for the foul but made the mistake of telling the referee exactly what he thought of the decision—earning an immediate second yellow and his marching orders.

Pirlo immediately stepped up and curled another great dead ball, although this one ricocheted away off the crossbar. Fortunately Chiellini was perfectly placed to prod home the rebound.

Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri reacted to those twin setbacks by withdrawing the ineffectual Robinho for a defender, Christian Zaccardo, in perhaps an indication of his hopes for a comeback.

But Milan did halve the deficit, with Muntari getting his second after robbing Pogba 35 yards out and unleashing a wicked drive that deflected into the bottom corner.

There was just time for one more chance but when Zapata’s desperate header veered wildly over a crossbar, Milan’s hopes of a point they would not have warranted were finally ended.

Arturo Vidal: B

Abject in the first half, Vidal was very impressive in the second half—helped undoubtedly by the presence of Paul Pogba, playing out of position on the right. As the team's fortunes rose with Vidal's, it only seemed to underline his importance to the team.


Philippe Mexes: D

Mexes was generally competent against the likes of Tevez and Fabio Quagliarella, but the central defender seemed preoccupied with his individual battle with Chiellini at times—even seeming to throw a punch at his opposite number at one corner. The Frenchman really let his side down with his dismissal, which cost his side any real chance they had of getting something from the contest.


What's Next?

Juventus are once again just two points off pacesetters AS Roma at the top of the table, alongside fellow Champions League side Napoli. But AC Milan have now slipped to 12th and have nearly two weeks off due to the international break to reflect on how to turn what appears to be a fairly mediocre (by the club's high standards) squad around.

Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon - The Juventus No.1 was reliable when called upon but could do nothing to prevent either Muntari strike.

Andrea Barzagli - Was unfortunate to see Muntari's shot deflect off him and beyond Buffon for Milan's second goal but, overall, he performed well to keep Matri at bay.

Leonardo Bonucci - Was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off when he appeared to push his forehead into Robinho's. Aside from that incident, he turned in a fine defensive display to kepe the Brazilian quiet.

Giorgio Chiellini - A top performance at both ends of the pitch. He won the majority of his duels with the Milan forwards and scored what proved to be the winner with an instinctive finish.

Simone Padoin - Failed to make the most of a rare start and offered little going forward from right wing-back.

Claudio Marchisio - Struggled to exert his influence on the game and lacked that creative edge.

Andrea Pirlo - His accurate range of passing and set pieces were key to the win, with one trademark free kick drawing Juventus level and another striking the bar before being followed up by Chiellini for the crucial third goal.

Arturo Vidal - The Chilean was uncharacteristically sloppy in possession in the first half but his passing and vision set up many promising Juventus attacks, one of which led to Giovinco's goal.

Kwadwo Asamoah - Impressive performance from the Ghanaian, who always looked a threat when cutting inside from the left wing.

Carlos Tévez - The Argentine's movement, dropping off the centre backs and moving out wide, caused all sorts of problems for the Milan defence. His mazy dribble won the free kick from which Pirlo converted.

Fabio Quagliarella - The striker failed to add to his goal in midweek and missed a sitter when he blazed over from close range. Was unsurprisingly subbed for Giovinco.


Substitutions

Paul Pogba - Gave Juventus more attacking options when he was introduced at right wing-back, although he was at fault for Muntari's 90th-minute goal.

Sebastian Giovinco - The 'Atomic Ant' made a telling contribution from the bench, netting a fine goal just one minute and 48 seconds after coming on.

Fernando Llorente - Came on for the last few minutes and had little time to make an impact.

AC Milan

Christian Abbiati - Made some smart saves to deny Asamoah and Chiellini but should perhaps have done better to prevent Pirlo's first half free kick.

Ignazio Abate - Was Milan's brightest defensive performer. His pace and good reading of play diffused many promising Juventus attacks.

Philippe Mexes - Was fortunate the referee didn't send him off for a swipe on Chiellini. However, he was later dismissed after a poor challenge and dissent.

Cristian Zapata - The Colombian centre-back struggled to deal Tevez's movement although he did often get back to make several crucial challenges.

Kevin Constant - Provided a useful attacking outlet from left-back but struggled with Tevez's dribbling when the Argentine drifted out to the right.

Sulley Ali Muntari - His instinctive effort gave Milan the dream start after just 20 seconds. He added a second late on with a deflected strike after dispossessing Pogba excellently.

Riccardo Montolivo - Flourished in an advanced midfield role and was Milan's most creative outlet.

Nigel De Jong - Showed his tenacity to break up Juventus attacks in front of the Milan back four. He will miss the game against Udinese after picking up a fourth yellow card of the season.

Antonio Nocerino - Worked tirelessly in the midfield but struggled to show his quality despite claiming the assist for Muntari's opener.

Robinho - An anonymous performance from the Brazilian who was well contained by Barzagli.

Alessandro Matri - His search for his first Milan goal continues after he was marked out of the game effectively by Bonucci and Chiellini.


Substitutions

Cristian Zaccardo - Came on to make up the defensive numbers after Mexes' dismissal.

Andrea Poli - Was introduced in the 86th minute and had little time to make an impression.

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has called for Philippe Mexes to be "punished heavily" for allegedly punching him during Sunday night's 3-2 win over AC Milan.

The Bianconeri vice-captain was left seething after the French defender appeared to strike him on the head during the second half of the game in Turin and although Mexes was later given his marching orders for a separate offence, Chiellini feels his opponent should be facing tough retrospective action.

“This sort of thing needs to be punished heavily because it is not fair and it is not football,” the 29-year-old told Sky Italia after the final whistle.

“I’ve had some tough tackles in my time, but I don’t recall ever doing that.

“Some people are repeat offenders. Tougness and determination in football should be praised, because you have a hard tackle and shake hands, but this is not football.”

Milan’s late fight-back did nothing to improve the mood of Chiellini, who was left frustrated by the way his side allowed Massimiliano Allegri’s men back into the match late on.

“It’s a victory but we can’t enjoy it fully as we once again conceded a late goal and risked letting Milan draw," the Italy international lamented.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom from Chiellini - who now goes off to join Cesare Prandelli’s national squad for Italy’s upcoming World Cup Qualfiers - as he was able to joke about finding the net for the first time in the league this season.

“I think I was helped by sliding in because I’m used to that movement, being a defender," he said of the way in which he slid to fire home the rebound from an Andrea Pirlo free kick.

“It was also my third goal with my right foot in the last two months. I’m not good at using it elsewhere, but at least for the goals it’s nice.”

Sulley Muntari put the Rossoneri ahead inside the opening 20 seconds but the hosts levelled through Andrea Pirlo before surging clear in the second half with goals from Sebastian Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini either side of Philippe Mexes.

Despite their numerica advantage, Milan kept battling right until the end and pulled a goal back through Muntari, again, but they were unable to salvage a point, with Allegri arguing that they had ultimately paid the price for an error-strewn display.

Marchisio keeping Roma close

Juventus’ Claudio Marchisio has underlined how important the win against Milan was on Sunday night. “We had to stay in touch with Roma.”

The Old Lady went into the game five points behind the Giallorossi given that the capital club have won all seven of their League games so far.

“Roma are currently doing positive things and have the advantage of not playing in Europe,” the midfielder noted.

The Turin giants did make things tough for themselves though after again falling a goal down – something which has haunted them so far this term.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte says Sebastian Giovinco has proven the fans that turned against him wrong for having done so.

The 26-year-old attacker scored within two minutes of coming on in place of Fabio Quagliarella in Sunday night's 3-2 win over AC Milan, as the Bianconeri came from behind to earn three vital points.

Conte hopes the forward’s influential contribution in such a big game will finally secure him the full support of the club’s followers.

"I am glad that after being asked by people so many times about this Giovinco finally scored a decisive goal," the Juve boss told Sky Sport Italia.

"I am happy for Seba, as he gets too much criticism from the Juve fans.

"It is not fair, as he is as good as the other strikers and needs support. I hope the rapport with the supporters can improve because of this goal."

The dramatic victory against the 10 men of Milan, who had Philippe Mexes sent off, saw the back-to-back Serie A champions continue a strong start to the new campaign by making it 19 points from seven matches.

Conte said he had to be impressed with such a points return but did admit his side still need to sharpen up, after conceding the opening goal for the sixth time in their last seven outings.

He continued: "When the fixture list was drawn up, everyone said we had been given a really tough start. I would have been more than happy with six wins and a draw by this stage.

"It was a good performance tonight, but we have to improve. At the moment we are conceding with the first shot on target, so that is an element of bad luck but also our own mistakes.

"We have been living with this situation for a while. It is almost as if we need a slap to wake us up. The first goal today was crazy, I almost didn't see Milan had scored after 20 seconds.

"After that, we did well to get back on our feet against a strong Milan side."

Following the international break, Juve will be back in action with a tricky clash away to Fiorentina, followed by a trip to the Bernabeu to play Real Madrid in the Champions League.

The Bianconeri fell 1-0 behind after just 20 seconds of play following Sulley Muntari's opener, but bounced back as Andrea Pirlo, Giovinco and Giorgio Chiellini all found the net before Muntari doubled his tally.

Zaccardo: Milan must improve

Cristian Zaccardo has admitted that AC Milan have much room for improvement following their 3-2 defeat at Juventus on Sunday.

The Rossoneri currently sit 12th in Serie A, with only eight points from seven games, and although their 31-year-old full-back was pleased by his side's performance in Turin, he feels that they will have to step up their game if they are to finish in the top three again this term.

"It was a balanced game," the 31-year-old told the club's official website. "We maintained good ball possession and nearly earned a draw.

"But while the performance was there, it's the results that matter.

The defender feels the return of Stephan El Sharaawy, Kaka and Giampaolo Pazzini, all of whom are currently out injured, will give his team a huge boost.

Mexes banned for four games over Chiellini punch

AC Milan have been rocked by the news that defender Philippe Mexes has been hit with a four-game ban for punching Juventus counterpart Giorgio Chiellini.

The incident occurred six minutes into the second half of Sunday night's Serie A meeting in Turin, with the France international appearing to strike the Bianconeri centre-half in the back of the head after they had both attempted to connect with an Andrea Pirlo corner.

An enraged Chiellini later called for Mexes to be "heavily punished" and Lega Serie have now confirmed that the Rossoneri ace has been suspended for four games.

The ruling body explained that one game related to the 31-year-old's later dismissal for a second bookable offence, with the other three games the result of the player having been found guilty of violent conduct courtesy of televisual evidence supplied by broadcaster Sky Sport Italia.

Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta believes the clampdown on racist or discriminatory abuse is “handing the stadium keys to tiny trouble-making groups.”

The rules to combat racist abuse in stadiums have been expanded to cover ‘territorial discrimination.’

Milan were therefore ordered to play their next home game against Udinese behind closed doors because of chants insulting to Neapolitans.

“With these latest sanctions we risk handing the stadium keys and the regularity of the tournament to tiny trouble-making groups,” said Beretta.

“This is penalising the rights of thousands and thousands of real fans.”

A protest movement is growing within the ultras to counter this clampdown by breaking the rules simultaneously, hoping to force an entire Serie A weekend to be played behind closed doors.

The Inter and Juventus ultras have already released statements confirming they will adhere to it in solidarity with their Milan counterparts.

Juventus ultras have joined Milan and Inter with their invitation to break the rules, forcing the closure of all stadiums.

The protest movement is spreading after Milan were ordered to play their next home game against Udinese behind closed doors for chants insulting Neapolitans.

This is an extension of the rules introduced to combat racism in stadiums, but the ultras protest this is trying to stamp out traditional inter-city rivalry that has always existed.

Inter ultras showed solidarity with Milan and now the Juventus ‘Fighters – Curva Sud Scirea’ have joined in.

“This is just another pointless and unconstitutional mechanism to discriminate against the ultras, condemning freedom of speech,” read the Juve ultras statement.

“During the next game in Florence on October 20 we invite all the fans to sing along with us those ‘famous’ chants of territorial discrimination. We invite supporters everywhere to unite in our protest by showing banners and singing these chants in every stadium on Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October.”

The plan from the various different groups of ultras is for all of the clubs to receive a ban simultaneously, so that an entire weekend of games will be played behind closed doors.

Marcello Lippi believes that Juventus are more than capable of springing a surprise in their upcoming Champions League games against Real Madrid.

The Serie A champions have been struggling to find their best form in Europe and are in danger of missing out on qualification for the group stages after draws against Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

Nevertheless, Lippi is confident that they can turn things around in their next two games, against Madrid.

"The recipe to beat them is quite simple: you have to believe in your own quality and stay organised," Lippi told Tuttosport.
