Round 17 — Home For The Holidays

I don't know if you guys remember this, but the last time Atalanta was at the Juventus Stadium, Juve were hoisting a Scudetto above their heads. That was fun. FUN FUN FUN FUN.

It's been a pretty darn good calendar year for Juventus Stadium, the first-full year Italy's best place to watch a football game has been open. There have been celebrations to witness and take it in, victories to cheer about, and just about any other happy things you can possibly think of.

Did I mention a lot of winning? Okay, good. Because there was a lot of that.

Now, Juve's crown jewel of a stadium is set to host its final game of 2012 when Atalanta come to Turin for the second-to-last match before everybody sets off to beautiful private islands for Christmas vacation and subsequent holiday celebrations. Don't you worry, guys. We'll just hang out here in the cold. No worries.

Speaking of celebrations, let me take you back to Atalanta's last visit to Juventus Stadium. I think you might remember it. There were a few things to cheer about that day.

Hey, there's Alessandro Del Piero! And Antonio Conte! And Marco Borriello! Wait. I guess not everything was memorable about that game. I still find it to be one of the best moments of the year. SO THERE.

But, the fact still remains: Juventus celebrated at their beautiful new stadium and Del Piero lifted the Scudetto above his head. As a baseball player once said to the press: "The thing is, it happened." That it did. League title No. 30 came together on the back what happened at Juventus Stadium.

So, as we close one of the best years in club history, Juve look to finish the way it started — winning. I personally think that sounds like a great plan. I hope you all agree. Well, if you're a Juventino, of course. Otherwise, I don't really know what to tell you.

LE CHIAVI

A few nuggets of information courtesy of juventus.com because they say it just as well I as I would have.

Two wins, two draws and four defeats, making it eight points from a possible 23. Seven of the seventeen goals they've managed overall. They've conceded one more on the road than they have in Bergamo. This is how Atalanta have fared away away this season.

Atalanta come into this game off the back of a 2-1 home win over Parma. Denis scored a header and Peluso doubled their lead, tapping into an empty net, before Amauri (HEY, REMEMBER HIM?) managed a consolation goal for the Gialloblu. With 21 points, Colantuono's men sit comfortably mid-table in 10th, seven points clear from the relegation zone.

GOOD NEWS — OR BAD NEWS?

While Juventus aren't playing all that well right now, they're still winning. Be it in the Coppa Italia or in the league campaign, the last few games haven't been world-beaters for Juve. Still, Conte's men are picking up three points. And with a lot of the regulars getting a rest on Wednesday as the second stringers beat Cagliari in the Coppa, the hope is that it pays off. Andrea Pirlo is rested. So are Claudio Marchisio, Mirko Vucinic, Stephen Lichtsteiner, and Giorgio Chiellini. May the #RestedPirlo theory pay off for just about everybody.

What is uncertain is whether Arturo Vidal will play due to the knee injury he suffered mid-week against Cagliari. My suggestion: Don't you dare risk it. If there's even the slightest chance of re-injuring it, sit it out and let Paul Pogba continue to be awesome. That's what having a team with depth allows Conte to do.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. What kind of Juventus shows up. Will it be the one we've seen the last two games, one that's pretty much meh at best? Or will it be the one that dominates the opponent at will? I't's obviously tough to predict what may or may not happen sitting thousands of miles away, but you know Conte can't be pleased with the way his team is playing overall the past few matches. Because of that, Conte is certainly going to try and give his squad an extra kick in the ass to try and get them going again. At least that's my best educated guess. If he wants to flip a table or two, that's always acceptable as well.

2. Luca Marrone. With Leo Bonucci out due to yellow card accumulation — no, not for the dive-type sort of thing he tried against Palermo — it's Marrone who will be in the center of the defense. He's played sparingly so far this season, yet he hasn't shown any kind of rust whatsoever. His transition from a box-to-box midfielder to vice-Bonucci has been pretty damn impressive to say the very least. Now, the Italian Under-21 international gets to start consecutive games for the first time since Juve's preseason tour.

3. Shutting down Denis the Menace. Germán Denis is good. I know that isn't exactly breaking news to some of you, but I just wanted to say it. He might not be on the same kind of goal-scoring pace he was last season, but he's still one hell of a threat in front of goal. Denis might not be Cavani or Jovetic in terms of overall quality, but he's certainly the player to circle when drawing up the defensive gameplan.

4. Sebastian Giovinco, Speaking of strikers playing well right now, we shift our attention onto the little fella. While he's not firing completely on all cylinders, Giovinco has quietly put up a solid season thus far, recording eight goals and four assists in all competitions. Not bad, eh? And some people make it sound like he's been a total flop. Ha. Take that you silly people!

Team News, Tactics, Line-ups And Prediction

Past 10 days have gone well for Juventus. The Old Lady qualified for the Champions League knock-out round after snatching a difficult win at Donetsk and followed it up by welcoming back Antonio Conte while squeezing past Palermo at the Renzo Barbera. Juve’s win against Palermo was further accentuated by their nearest rivals losing against Inter. In mid-week, Conte returned to the sidelines at the Juventus stadium while #12 Sebastian Giovinco scored his 12th Juventus goal on 12th minute on 12-12-12 to help his team get to next round of Coppa Italia. This will be the last match Juventus play at home in a very successful 2012 and Conte’s first Serie A match in Turin this season, so expect another momentous occasion. Facing them will be a tricky Atalanta side which has tided over a two point penalty to occupy a healthy mid-table position.

Team News and Tactical Brief

Juventus

The Coppa Italia game proved to be more costly than Conte would have wanted, with three players picking up injuries. Emmanuele Giaccherini pulled out with a stomach bug while Arturo Vidal picked up a minor muscle injury. The most serious blow came with a long term injury for Nicklas Bendtner who is now set to be ruled out for two to three months. Leonardo Bonucci will also be missing out against the Nerazzuri after picking up a yellow card against Palermo.

Antonio Conte is unlikely to tinker with the 3-5-2 formation for this match, despite playing a 4-3-3 in Sicily last week. Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini are likely to start with Luca Marrone slotting in for Bonucci. Marrone is a like-for-like replacement for the ex-Bari defender in more than one way. In Conte’s system it is Bonucci, with his superior passing range and better ball control, who plays the role of a sweeper with the other two dropping back. Marrone has proved time and again that his vision for a killer long pass doesn’t betray his young age. He is not a natural defender, having played as a central midfielder for most of his youth career. However, he has shown admirable ability to adapt to the new and has consistently impressed, including in the mid-week game.

Mauricio Isla had another quiet game in mid-week and is likely to be replaced by in-form Stefan Lichtsteiner. The Swiss mail train has regained his form after a slight dip in form last month and is back to his best. His movement on the right-wing and understanding with Pirlo and Vucinic is telepathic at times. In the past one and half years, Juventus has created dozens of chances with Pirlo releasing an accelerating Lichtsteiner with a through pass. Atalanta are likely to have five men in the midfield to mirror Juve’s formation and the Swiss international is likely to have an interesting match-up with Federico Peluso.

Paul Pogba continues to impress for Juventus and is likely to team up with Pirlo and Marchisio in central midfield. Often faultily compared to Pirlo during the transfer window, Pogba is a player who is more in the Edgar Davids or Patrick Vieira mode. The French starlet is dynamic and has brilliant off the ball movement with a penchant of trying out booming volleys. Unlike Vidal, Pogba is much more comfortable near the opponent penalty box rather than winning possession in midfield. He is likely to make late runs in the penalty box in tandem with Marchisio,with Pirlo spraying over-head passes towards them. It is a tactic which has worked well for Juventus this season.

Sebastian Giovinco will look to overcome the dodgy numerological references as he lines up with Vucinic upfront. The Montenegrin has shown encouraging signs of returning to form in Juventus’ past three matches and is likely to act as the holding player with Giovinco making runs into the opponent penalty box.

Possible Starting XI (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Marrone, Chiellini; Lichtsteiner, Pirlo, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Vucinic, Giovinco

Atalanta

The Nerazzuri continue to upset all the odds, continuing the trend of last season. Few experts tipped them to repeat what they did last season but they have defied all bet makers till now. German Denis is still enjoying his Indian Summer in Atalanta and has scored in their last two matches. They will need to bounce back quickly from a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Roma in midweek, however. The Nerazzuri has picked up some impressive scalps this season, including both Milan clubs and Napoli.

Atalanta are likely to play a 4-4-1-1 formation with Argentine Maxi Moralez acting as the link-man between midfield and Denis. Moralez was one of the best players for Atalanta last season and has been solid so far this season. Juventus often play a high-line of defence and have looked vulnerable against fast counter attacks. Atalanta’s best chances of scoring a goal will be Moralez or Ezequiel Schelotto making runs behind the Juve back three with Luca Cigarini trying to spot their runs. Cigarini was once tipped to be the next great Italian midfielder. A series of ill-fated transfers cost him some vital seasons of his career but he seems to have regained some of his form in Atalanta.

The Orobici will also count on their top scorer German Denis to come good in Turin. The Tank is a physically strong striker and he will look to take advantage of Luca Marrone’s inexperience and comparatively lighter physique. The Argentine is in good form right now and the Old Lady must remain wary of his aerial and physical strength.

The most interesting battle will take place on the wings where Federico Peluso will square off against Lichsteiner. The Swiss wing-back is famous for his energy and drive but Peluso has emerged as one of the most consistent Italian full-backs in past one year. His sense of positioning and ability to time his overlaps well is likely to cause Lichtsteiner to be a bit more conservative.

Player(s) to Watch Out For

Paul Pogba (Juventus)

The 19 year-old is steadily showing why two of the biggest clubs in the world were tangled in a bitter transfer saga for his signature. Atalanta is a solid unit and is not likely to play an open game in Turin. Pogba’s energy and dynamism will be vital to unlock the opponent defence.

German Denis (Atalanta)

The Nerazzuri are not likely to create a whole lot of chances in Juventus stadium. However, given the kind of form Denis has shown since moving to Bergamo, he might not need too many chances to score a goal.

Prediction

Juventus 2-0 Atalanta

Juventus players will have an extra motivation to finish off last match of 2012 with a win plus Antonio Conte is not likely to settle for anything less than three points on his return. Juve’s superiority on the wings is likely to make a difference and the Old Lady can dominate this match in front of their home fans.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte received some illustrious backing on the eve of his return to the Turin touchline for a Serie A meeting with Atalanta.

Conte made an emotional return to the Juventus Stadium for a midweek Coppa Italia victory over Cagliari, but tomorrow's game against Atalanta marks the 43-year-old's first home league game since a four-month suspension ended last week.

Giovanni Trapattoni - now in charge of the Republic of Ireland national team - won the Scudetto six times and the European Cup once in a 10-year spell as Juve boss and the veteran tactician is backing Conte to leave a similar legacy at the Piedmont club.

He told the Corriere dello Sport: "Antonio Conte is the most important element of Juve - he knows how to combine good football, a sense of occasion, mental strength and results.

"I don't know if this Juve side can get all the way to the final of the Champions League, there are a lot of experienced teams in there, but the team is becoming stronger and stronger and you can't rule out any results."

There was bad news for Juve this week, though, with on-loan Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner suffering a leg injury that is likely to keep him out of action for two months.

Midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini has been given extra time to recover from gastrointestinal flu while Arturo Vidal nurses a bruised knee.

Atalanta recovered from a three-game losing streak to claim a 2-1 victory over Parma last time out but the Bergamo club have struggled away from home so far.

Federico Peluso has been key player in the Nerazzurri defence for two years but the Italy international revealed how close he had come to sealing a summer switch to Juventus.

He told Tuttosport: "They were some difficult months, with my future in the balance right until the very end, and dealing with the rumours wasn't easy.

"I'll admit that on the evening of August 31 I felt a little bit of regret but the next day I was fine because I'm happy at Atalanta.

"I can't ever be totally sure but I think I was very close to a move.

"I would be a hypocrite if I said that I wouldn't like to play for a big club like Juventus in the future.

"If Atalanta is a Mercedes then Juventus is a Ferrari... having said that, I'm focused on Atalanta and I won't waste my energy thinking about other things."

James Troisi, Davide Biondini and Guido Marilungo will not feature through injury, while Giacomo Bonaventura and Carlos Carmona face late fitness checks.

Players to Watch

Paul Pogba

The Frenchman will likely deputise for the sidelined Vidal, and will be eager to prove his worth to Antonio Conte. The former Manchester United midfielder has been impressive in his appearances up to this point, and a composed performance alongside the experienced Pirlo could add another dimension to Juve's attack.

Germán Denis

The Argentine has been one of Atalanta's premier goal threats this season, with seven goals notched so far. The 31-year old will need to be in fine form if his side are to score and get a result from the Juventus Stadium.

Prediction

Juventus have been imperious in recent weeks, having recovered capably from their 1-0 defeat to Milan. The Bianconeri have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four, and Atalanta will have their work cut out for them as they look to breach their hosts' backline. A routine victory for Juve seems to be on the cards.

Bonaventura warns Juve

Giacomo Bonaventura admits he was a Juventus fan as a child, but warns that today his team Atalanta are “giant-killers.”

The midfielder, affectionately known as Jack, has become a key figure in the Orobici side.

“As a child I was a Juventus fan, because they won so many trophies and had Alessandro Del Piero, who was just the best,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“I loved Number 10 players and Del Piero was always my idol. However, since I have been in Bergamo, my heart is only for Atalanta.”

Bonaventura also worked with current Juve Coach Antonio Conte when they were at Atalanta together.

“I remain very fond of Conte and he taught me so much. I think Atalanta let a great Coach go and the results confirm that. Unfortunately there were circumstances here that prompted the divorce, but there are few as good as him at reading the game.

“Juventus are in great shape and we’ll only get a result if we play at 100 per cent. We have always put in great performances against the big clubs and I am convinced it’ll happen in Turin too. We’ve got a bit of a reputation as giant-killers.”

Bonaventura has been linked with an Italy call-up to Cesare Prandelli’s side.

“My objective is to do well with Atalanta then, if I do get to play for Italy, it’ll be an honour. I’m not thinking about that now.

“As for joining a top club, there’s no denying everyone aspires to go as far as possible in their profession. If one day I become too strong for Atalanta, then someone will come looking for me, but right now I belong here.”

Stendardo 'storm in a teacup'

Atalanta call Guglielmo Stendardo for today’s trip to Juventus and assure the controversy over his law exam was “a storm in a teacup.”

The defender pulled out of Tuesday’s Coppa Italia game against Roma as he needed to be in Salerno to sit an exam in his law degree.

The club and Coach Stefano Colantuono warned he would “have to take responsibility for his choice,” creating controversy around Italy.

He was expected to be dropped or fined, but Stendardo is in the squad for this afternoon’s Serie A match.

“Stendardo is absolutely fine and trained well. It was a storm in a teacup,” assured Atalanta director general Pierpaolo Marino today.

“In fact, we compliment him on his educational achievements. After all, it’s always useful to have a lawyer in-house!”

This has been a long process for 31-year-old ‘Willy’ Stendardo, who first completed his three-year degree in November 2008 and in 2010 became a specialist in jurisprudence with a grade of 108/110. His thesis was on ‘The responsibility of the sportsman and doping.’

This latest exam means he will be to all intents and purposes a fully-qualified lawyer.

Juventus could not be more comfortable at half-time, as they lead 3-0 against 10-man Atalanta.

The Bianconeri had the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table, though welcomed an Atalanta side known for scaring the big clubs. Leonardo Bonucci sat out a ban, replaced by Luca Marrone, while Nicklas Bendtner is out for three months after tearing a tendon in his thigh. The Orobici missed Carlos Carmona, Guido Marilungo, Facundo Parra and Daniele Capelli, but opted for a new 3-4-2-1 system.

Juve hadn’t lost this fixture since 1989, notching up 14 victories and four stalemates in all competition.

It took just 60 seconds for Juventus to break the deadlock, as Mirko Vucinic ran on to a Sebastian Giovinco through ball and side-footed it precisely into the far bottom corner.

Atalanta threatened an equaliser when German Denis pounced on a Marrone howler, but Gigi Buffon got a hand to the shot when one-on-one. The Argentine really should’ve scored.

Juventus cruised to victory over a timid Atalanta side in Turin on Sunday, running out 3-0 winners over their mid-table visitors.

Goals from Mirko Vucinic, Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio in the opening half hour of the match set Antonio Conte's men on their way to a routine victory, as well as extending their run of clean sheets to five games.

With Inter having fallen to a narrow defeat away to Lazio earlier in the round, the Bianconeri had the chance to open up a seven-point gap over Andrea Stamaccioni's side. Atalanta, meanwhile, remained rooted in mid-table.

The hosts made a barnstorming start to the game and took just two minutes to open the scoring. Vucinic was played in by a crisp through-ball from Giovinco and the striker took a touch to carve out a pocket of space, before curling past a helpless Andrea Consigli.

Atalanta very nearly levelled matters just moments later, only for German Denis to be brilliantly denied by Gianluigi Buffon. The Argentine was allowed to run through on goal after Andrea Barzagli had failed to deal with a slicing pass, but was unable to show the finishing instinct which had seen his opposite number open the scoring minutes earlier.

The visitors continued to pry for an opening around the Juventus area, but saw their deliveries parried by a resilient Juventus back-line. Maxi Moralez was next to test Buffon, but his effort from range failed to trouble the Bianconeri skipper.

A moment of class from Pirlo then doubled the scoring in favour of the hosts, after Arturo Vidal did well to draw a foul just outside the area. The Italy international lined up to take the resultant free kick, and fired home with a sumptuous curling effort into the top corner.

Vucinic spurned two clear chances to add to his goal tally shortly after. A scramble on the edge of the box allowed the forward to get a wayward shot away, before the Montenegrin's effort at the end of some delightful link-up play over the left flank and into the area was deflected to safety.

Juventus were not to be denied a third, however, and Marchisio was on hand to further extend his side's lead just before the half-hour mark. The Italian midfielder was given far too much time to compose himself outside the area and responded by rifling past a despairing Consigli.

Atalanta were then dealt another blow minutes later, with Thomas Manfredini sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the game. The Italian was unfortunate to see his final foul warrant a dismissal, but the referee saw enough in it to send the defender for an early shower.

Juventus came out after the break in full control of proceedings, with Pirlo dictating play against his side's 10-man visitors. The midfielder very nearly saw his compatriot Giovinco snatch a fourth for the Bianconeri, but the forward's palm-stinging effort failed to find its way into the net.

The diminutive striker did put the ball in the net just before the hour mark, but saw his effort ruled offside. Ezequiel Schelotto then had a half-chance to bag a goal for Atalanta at the other end, but blasted well wide from the edge of the area.

The linesman was again Juventus' foil shortly later, with Fabio Quagliarella's effort off a rebound ruled out after the striker had strayed marginally offside, with Pirlo having tested Consiglio with a rifling effort.

Giovinco then came close to extending his side's lead after working his way through the Atalanta defence, but the Italian's low effort was well wide and failed to threaten the visitors' goal. The Italian forward spurned two further chances to get on the scoresheet shortly after, with Consigli parrying the 25-year old on both occasions.

The win sees Juventus move seven points clear at the top of the Serie A table, thanks to Napoli's defeat this evening.

The Bianconeri had the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table, though welcomed an Atalanta side known for scaring the big clubs. Leonardo Bonucci sat out a ban, replaced by Luca Marrone, while Nicklas Bendtner is out for three months after tearing a tendon in his thigh. The Orobici missed Carlos Carmona, Guido Marilungo, Facundo Parra and Daniele Capelli, but opted for a new 3-4-2-1 system.

Juve hadn’t lost this fixture since 1989, notching up 14 victories and four stalemates in all competition.

It took just 60 seconds for Juventus to break the deadlock, as Mirko Vucinic ran on to a Sebastian Giovinco through ball and side-footed it precisely into the far bottom corner.

Atalanta threatened an equaliser when German Denis pounced on a Marrone howler, but Gigi Buffon got a hand to the shot when one-on-one. The Argentine really should’ve scored.

Juventus sealed a comfortable 3-0 Serie A victory over 10-man Atalanta.

Mirko Vucinic put the home team in front in the second minute with Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio adding further goals within the first half an hour.

Thomas Manfredini was then shown a red card for Atalanta, who were fortunate to avoid any further damage as Juve continued to attack but could not add to their first-half salvo.

Vucinic got the ball rolling with just 80 seconds on the clock when he showed his eye for goal by curling an effort inside the far post with only Andrea Consigli to beat.

Atalanta almost responded in the fourth minute but Gianluigi Buffon denied German Denis with his one and only intervention of the game.

Ten minutes later Pirlo made it two for the Bianconeri with a direct free-kick from 30 yards which he curled over the wall and into the top left-hand corner, beyond Consigli's reach.

Five minutes later Giorgio Chiellini saw his shot from 20 yards deflected wide before Marchisio made it three in the 27th minute.

His 25-yard shot was curling away from Consigli, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.

Five minutes later Atalanta's hopes were well and truly dashed when Manfredini received a second yellow card for an unnecessary foul on Chiellini deep in the Juventus half.

Juventus had no intention of showing any mercy in the second half with Fabio Quagliarella's effort ruled out for offside when he pounced on the ball after it was parried by Consigli from another Pirlo effort.

Sebastian Giovinco dragged a shot wide of the far post, was denied by Consigli and then struck another effort over the crossbar as he tried in vain to add his name to the scoresheet.

Juventus smashed Atalanta 3-0 at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday afternoon in Serie A.

The Old Lady came flying out the traps as Mirko Vucinic put the home side one up inside the first two minutes. The 29-year-old latched onto a brilliant Sebastian Giovinco through ball to curl his right footed effort past the outstretched Andrea Consigli.

This electric start from the Bianconeri continued doubled their lead inside fifteen minutes through a stunning Andrea Pirlo free kick who lifted his effort up over the wall from 25 yards out. Giovinco won the free kick after being blocked off by Gianpaolo Bellini.

It was then Claudio Marchisio’s turn to add to the rout as he found himself in space on the edge of the area, and unleashed a shot into bottom right corner of Consigli’s goal.

Not only were Atalanta three goals down they also saw themselves reduced to 10 men after Thomas Manfredini received his second yellow card for a foul on Giorgio Chiellini.

Juventus went in at the break with a three goal lead.

They were denied twice by the linesman’s flag in the second half, Giovinco on one occasion and Fabio Quagliarella on the other.

La Dea had a brilliant opportunity to at least put themselves on the score sheet but Federico Peluso squandered his effort high of Gianluigi Buffon’s goal from close range.

Antonio Conte’s men held on to their lead to see out a comfortable victory.

We Learned from Juve's Comfortable Win

In a game that was never really a contest, Juventus defeated Atalanta Bergamo at the Juventus Stadium on Sunday by a score of three goals to nil.

Mirko Vucinic opened the scoring in the second minute after a beautifully executed one-two with Sebastian Giovinco. Andrea Pirlo doubled the lead with a vintage free kick, and Claudio Marchisio iced the win with a long-range effort that took a slight deflection.

Atalanta finished the game with 10 men, as Thomas Manfredini was sent off before the half with his second yellow card.

Juventus didn't push for additional goals after the break, electing to run out the clock.

Here are five things we learned from the Bianconeri's easy win.

Vucinic and Giovinco Can Coexist

It might not be my favourite pairing up front, but credit where credit is due: Mirko Vucinic and Sebastian Giovinco played an excellent game in support of each other.

My main issue with this line up is the lack of a true goalscorer, but the Montenegrin was able to find the net within 90 seconds of the opening whistle off a beautiful feed from Giovinco, putting such concerns to rest.

Giovinco had numerous chances for a goal of his own, but he failed to find the back of the net. The Italy international had a great game nonetheless, creating lots of space for his fellow players with his constant running and putting himself in good positions to score.

The reason this pairing worked was the play of Arturo Vidal on the wing. The Chilean plays all over the field but spent a lot of team on the right wing against Atalanta, forcing the strikers inside the danger zone. The feed to Vucinic was excellent, and Juventus were able to slice right through the Atalanta defense because of this.

Fabio Quagliarella showed his qualities in limited time when he came on as a substitute for Vucinic, so for one week fans can put any concerns they have regarding the Bianconeri striker force to rest.

Chiellini's Offensive Contributions Are Sensational

We all know Giorgio Chiellini as a no-nonsense, throwback kind of defender, and we love him for it.

But his offensive contributions and penetrating runs have been an eye opener this season. The big, clumsy butcher can actually play football.

Against Atalanta, Chiellini assisted Marchisio on his goal, nearly scored one of his own on a shot from the edge of the box and fired in several quality crosses that tormented the Bergamo centre backs.

Chiellini has been doing this all season, and his output was on full display on Sunday. This is a fairly new phenomenon, but one Juventus fans have to enjoy.

He clearly relishes playing behind Kwadwo Asamoah, the kind of player that has the motor and defensive qualities to make up for Chiellini leaving his post, and he trusts his partners on the back line enough to venture forward.

With Andrea Barzagli not afraid to do the same on the right wing and Leonardo Bonucci often setting up the attack with the long ball, the Bianconeri now have three world-class centre-backs who can match up with everyone defensively and help out on the other end of the pitch. This provides Antonio Conte with yet another weapon to win games.

Giaccherini Didn't Ruin Everything

I'm joking, of course. Regular readers know I loathe Emanuele Giaccherini and don't feel like he has a place in this team.

So it's fun for once to write down that he made an excellent impression, coming on as a sub. He looked lively and involved and provided a beautiful cross to Giovinco that nearly went in.

Conte switched his formation, from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3 to incorporate Giaccherini when he came on the field, and Juventus didn't lose a step in doing so. Simone Padoin did an excellent job on the right wing, continuing his great form that was on full display against Cagliari, but Giaccherini's performance tasted even sweeter because I wasn't expecting him to do much.

I don't mind being wrong, and I hope the young midfielder can build on this performance. One good game isn't going to make me a fan, but it's a start.

Blame the Pitch for Marrone's Little Mistake

Leading 1-0, Luca Marrone clumsily gave the ball away to German Dennis in a turn of events that nearly led to the equaliser.

It would be a shame if people called out the young Italian on this, because he really put in a great performance apart from that slip-up.

He had a great game in midweek against Cagliari in the heart of the defense and continued that form today against Atalanta, a team that boasts a lot of quality players and already beat teams like AC Milan, Napoli and Inter this season.

He wasn't the only player to lose his footing on the slippery pitch today, and he didn't let his early mistake get to his head. For a young player that only recently made the switch from midfield to defense, that counts as a win.

Buffon Is Still a Top Goalkeeper

Something the Bianconeri faithful already knew, but for the first time in recent weeks, the Juve stopper got to show his abilities.

Gianluigi Buffon was surprisingly busy today, as he was tested by the Atalanta strikers early and often. But the veteran goalkeeper was ready for anything the Nerazzurri threw at him and was able to keep his nets clean for the fifth consecutive game.

Iker Casillas and Manuel Neuer are fantastic players, but casual followers of the Serie A seem to think that Buffon is getting old and no longer has what it takes.

Ridiculous.

Officially the greatest goalkeeper of the 21st century, Buffon is still playing at an elite level and is undoubtedly amongst the top five goalkeepers in the world.

And his performance on Sunday reminded everyone that. It's obvious why Juventus are trying to extend his contract, and reports are suggesting both parties are very close to an extension.

Bonus Slide: Inter Lose

Inter Milan lost to Lazio Roma yesterday, so the win over Atalanta gives Juventus a seven-point lead over their bitter rivals.

Napoli play Bologna later Sunday night and can close the gap with the Bianconeri to five points with a win.

This close to the winter break, the Bianconeri are big winners this weekend regardless of Napoli's result, and the added distance between Juve and Inter will be very welcome once the UEFA Champions League resumes after the break.

Update: Napoli lost to Bologna 3-2, dropping them to the third spot on the Serie A table. Inter are second, seven points behind Juventus.

Bologna pulled away from the relegation zone with an unexpected 3-2 win at high-flying Napoli.

Despite taking the lead through Manolo Gabbiadini in the 10th minute, there was little to suggest Bologna would take all three points from the Stadio San Paolo when Napoli turned the game through Alessandro Gamberini and Edinson Cavani.

But two goals in three minutes from Panagiotis Kone - a stunning flying volley - and Daniele Portanova earned Stefano Pioli's side a win that dented Napoli's title hopes and boosted their own chances of survival.

In just half an hour, i Bianconeri had 3 goals in Consigli's goal and a man advantage on the field. Doesn't get any easier than that.

I had to start with this masterpiece of a free kick. Beautifully struck, curled right in the corner to make it unsaveable. Class is in session, says il Professore. Enjoy.

POST-GAME REFLECTION

This was a quick and easy one, wasn't it? 3 Goals in 28 minutes, then a deserved red card by Manfredini and the game was in the bag after half an hour.

In all honesty, we played a vastly inferior opponent which left us a ton of space in the back and we were smart to take advantage of it quickly and efficiently. Then the game got a bit more boring, though we didn't stop creating chances since all of our strikers were hungry for goals and we had numbers. Unfortunately, none came along in the second half.

It was a great weekend for Juventus overall in Serie A too. Inter lost to Lazio despite having most of the chances, then Bologna came back from behind to beat Napoli 2-3 on the last fixture of the weekend. If you haven't had a chance to see Kone's equalizing goal in that game, do give it a peek. It's a beaut.

With two more game to go till the half-season mark, Juventus are officially Campioni d'Inverno for the second year in a row. Kobe Bryant would be pleased.

TACTICAL THOUGHTS

Not much to write home about tactically. The most interesting thing that happened in the second half was Lichtsteiner playing center back with Padoin playing in his wing back position. Other than that, a 3-5-2 as usual, dominated possession and play from start to finish, and anything else I could say I can also cover individually by player in the pagelle. So let's hit em.

LE PAGELLE

Buffon: 8 - Seeing Marrone right in front of him again instead of Bonucci only sharpened Gigi's focus throughout the game. Right after our first goal, the young midfielder-turned-centre-back slipped and allowed Dennis a one-on-one chance with Buffon but Gigi saved it in style to ensure Juventus stayed on the right course. He also handled any outside shot with ease and dominated his area on crosses. Good game by our Captain.

Barzagli: 7.5 - Played 60 minutes like he usually does - with concentration, determination, and great positioning. Helped out in attack quite a bit once we were a man up. Let little slip by him defensively despite dealing with Maxi Morales on that right hand side. Happy he got some rest, too.

Marrone: 7 - It was good to see the youngster in the starting line up for the suspended Bonucci. He started a bit shaky with that slip up but luckliy Buffon bailed him out. Then he gathered himself and played a confident game with some timely interceptions. 180 solid minutes for Marrone in 4 days - not bad for our Primavera-bred young prospect.

Chiellini: 7.5 - Made sure everything in the back was in order and put in his usual strong performance, despite the advantage in goals and men. Had noticeably more forward forays since he was given more space, though mostly with an amusing effect.

Lichtsteiner: 7.5 - Played a very attacking game once again, this time helped out by the man plus in midfield. Pushed Maxi back and kept him off the counter attack until the Swiss was switched to centre back. Handled that unusual position just as well.

Vidal: 8 - Linked up very well with the rest of our midfield and attackers, though he didn't quite have his shooting boots on for the day. His tackling and dribbling were on point though. Complimented our scoring midfield beautifully.

Pirlo: 9- A marvelous game for il Professore, scored that awesome free kick then went on and simply controlled the game with his passing like the maestro that he is. To really illustrate that, listen to this: the Beard completed 96% of his passes in the game. Man of match hands down. One thing that may have gone unnoticed was his commitment in recovering the ball in midfield and covering for whomever had rushed forward from our defenders and wing backs. He was left with plenty of space, that is true, but he certainly showed his class by using it to our full advantage.

Marchisio: 8.5 - Could've scored a couple but the one he placed in the bottom right corner was a great one. With the pressure of the scoreline off, he was more relaxed and played a great game. Our midfield really had a field day today.

Asamoah: 7.5 - Perhaps the least used player on the pitch for Juventus, Kwado was rarely in the midst of the scoring opportunities from that left flank. Pirlo sent in a delicious ball to him late in the game which he tried centering but was unable to set up Quagliarella or Giovinco for the tap in.

Vucinic: 8.5 - Played an excellent 60 minute stint. Opened the scoring very early with a great finish and his celebration was so goddamn cute - giving the thumbs up to his son because apparently that's what Aleksandar does every time he sees him on the pitch. Our whole midfield and attack was playing well today, linking up quickly and accurately. It felt like a scrimmage for most of the game, actually.

Giovinco: 8 - Did everything right but score a goal. Was all over the pitch from the very start, his touch was excellent on most occasions, linked up very well with both Vucinic and Quagliarella, and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. He even beat Consigli in the second half but was offside by a smidge. Had a ton of chances to score in retrospect, really should've found the net on at least one. And to think that this was the guy with a reputation of always scoring when the games are already won!

Subs:

Quagliarella: 7.5 - He kind of pissed me off with his constant bitching to everyone that didn't put him in a scoring position. Then realized he should quit that bullshit and try to actually score himself, which he almost did on a couple occasions through his trademark long shots. Consigli had a great second half though, and Giovinco and Quagliarella were unable to score an on-side goal during their time on the pitch.

After every goal he screamed more instructions to the players and hardly cracked a smile all game. Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon - It was not really a busy evening for the captain but he made a terrific stop from Denis early on that was pretty crucial in the context of the game.

Giorgio Chiellini - Laid off the pass to Marchisio, from which he went on to score. Matched the threat of Denis and covered well for Marrone. A typcially unassuming, robust and dominant display by Chiellini.

Luca Marrone - The youngster’s slip let in Denis for a one-on-one with Buffon. A little unsure at times, but, looked more comfortable when Juve switched to a back four and Chiellini joined him in the centre.

Andrea Barzagli - Was his no-nonsense self. A rather comfortable afternoon at the back for the Italy international, who, along with Chiellini, minimised the impact of the towering Denis.

Stephan Lichtsteiner - The Swiss worked hard throughout. Although, he would have liked to have made more of an impact from an attacking perspective in a game that his side dominated. However, he was asked to play a more defensive role in the second half and he did his job well.

Claudio Marchisio - As combative as ever in the middle of the park and once again displayed his scoring nous with a finely hit goal. Interchanged positions with ease with his team-mates and was no less comfortable when later asked to play on the left side of midfield. Another great all-round display.

Andrea Pirlo - An absolute gem of a goal from a free kick. Was at his majestic best as he once again ran proceedings with his range of passing. Got stuck in defensively, too. A top display from the Italian legend.

Kwadwo Asamoah - Nothing spectacular from the Ghanaian. Along with Chiellini, he kept Atalanta at bay down the left flank. Got forward on occasion. Did a good job when put at left-back later on.

Arturo Vidal - Clearly wanted to get in on the scoring, as he tested Consigli a couple of times in the first half. Was tidy on the ball, as ever, while defensively not much got past him. Should have scored in the final minute with the goal gaping.

Mirko Vučinić - Opened the scoring with a expertly taken strike within minutes of the kick off. Linked up well with Giovinco and always looked a threat. Taken off for Quagliarella on the hour.

Sebastian Giovinco - Provided the assist for Vucinic’s opener. Was dangerous throughout the contest. Tried in vain to get on the score board, but, bottled a number of chances, particularly in the second period. Still, an impressive performance even if he forgot his shooting boots.

Substitutions

Simone Padoin - Like Giaccherini, conditions allowed him to get forward often. Got the better of Peluso far too easily on occasion.

Emanuele Giaccherini - Came on with Juve coasting. It enabled him to get forward on occasion down the left wing and he did cause problems for Atalanta. Had Juve’s strikers been more accurate, might have got an assist.

Fabio Quagliarella - Introduced for Vucinic and registered three shots as he looked to extend Juve’s lead.

Atalanta

Andrea Consigli - Perhaps it is slightly harsh, but may have done more to stop Marchisio’s goal. However, he had an excellent second half as he frustrated Giovinco and his team-mates time and time again.

Stefano Lucchini - He undeniably improved after the break as he did his best to limit the damage, but he was guilty of allowing Marchisio far too much space to line up his goal.

Thomas Manfredini - Was defensively poor for the half hour he did play. Got himself two deserving yellow cards in the space of 60 seconds to make it high impossible for his team already three down by this stage to get anything from the game. His team-mates deserve an apology for his stupidity.

Gianpaolo Bellini - A nervy start from the captain, whose slip allowed Vucinic on to score the opening goal. His afternoon did not improve all that much as the game wore on.

Federico Peluso - Perhaps the best of the Atalanta defence, though that is not saying much. Limited the threat of Lichtsteiner in the opening stages but was overrun by the Swiss, and later Padoin. Rarely got forward.

Ezequiel Schelotto - Not his best display, though you can say that about the rest of his team, too. Was forced into a more defensive role following Manfredini’s red card. Still tried to get forward, but was outmatched by Asamoah. Giaccherini also caused him problems later on. In truth, an afternoon he’d rather forget.

Giacomo Bonaventura - His pace proved threating at times. Tried to link up with Denis at every opportunity but he was subbed before half-time as Stefano Colantuono rejigged things following the red card.

Maximiliano Moralez - It was a tough outing for the diminutive Argentine. Had the pace and trickery to create for the visitors, but, Juve kept him quiet rather too easily.

Luca Cigarini - As ever, he sprayed the passes about from the centre. But, along with his teammates, he was outfought and outclassed by Pirlo, Marchisio and Vidal. Subbed in the second half after picking up a knock.

Ivan Radovanovic - Completely overshadowed in the center of the park. Was withdrawn at the break, which came as little surprise.

Germán Denis - Fluffed early chance to equalise following a defensive mistake. It proved vital as Juve went on to score three. With his side down a man, the service dried up in what was a frustrating outing for the Argentine.

Substitutions

Guglielmo Stendardo - Came on to sure up things defensively for the visitors. And, given that Juve did not score a goal while he was on the field he deserves some credit.

Riccardo Cazzola - Came on for the last 15 minutes and had no impact on the game.

Davide Biondini - Sent on in place of Radovanovic to cover for the sent-off Manfredini in the centre of defence. Juve still continued to carve opportunities at will with his introduction.

Vucinic: Early goal vital in Juventus victory over Atalanta

The Montenegrin striker was pleased with how his side handled the game

against La Dea after his early strike had given the Old Lady the lead.

Mirko Vucinic believes his strike after two minutes against Atalanta was influential in securing all three points for Juventus in their 3-0 win on Sunday.

The Montenegrin grabbed the opening goal in a first-half demolition of Atalanta to extend his side's lead at the top of the table to seven points.

“We started strongly and that was the most important thing to do. We scored immediately, the second arrived shortly afterwards and we handled the game well from there on in," Vucinic told the club's official website.

Andrea Pirlo scored the second after 14 minutes before Claudio Marchisio hit a third on 27 minutes, but Vucinic was not concerned that his side could not extend their lead in the second half.

“The tempo dropped in the second half, but it’s a good sign that the strikers kept going right until the end in search of a goal," he said.

"Now we’ll think ahead to Friday’s game against Cagliari. We’re after another win in order to celebrate Christmas in the best possible way.”

Conte: 'It's not over yet'

Antonio Conte insists “the season isn’t over” after Juventus went seven points clear and warns “we won’t sign any top player.”

The Bianconeri crushed Atalanta 3-0 in the opening half-hour, a task then made easier by Thomas Manfredini’s dismissal.

“It went well and was a great performance. We had the right approach and it wasn’t easy against a side like Atalanta,” said Conte.

“The season isn’t over yet. We’re still going and it’s never simple to confirm a victory a year later. We try to prove ourselves through good football and organisation.

“At the end of the day we’ll see where we are.”

The January transfer window opens soon and newspapers claim a deal is close for Didier Drogba.

“I know full well that this is a critical moment on an economic level for many clubs. We won’t sign any top player, because we are not in a position to do so. Neither are the other sides in Serie A.”

This title is granted to the team that is top at the halfway stage of the season, which won’t be for another two rounds.

However, the Bianconeri cannot be caught, as rivals Inter and Napoli both lost this weekend.

Juve are the Campioni d’Inverno for the second year in a row.

History favours Winter Juventus

The statistics are backing Juventus to be crowned Campioni d’Italia after the Old Lady wrapped up the Winter crown.

A 3-0 win over Atalanta, coupled with defeats for Inter and Napoli, saw the Bianconeri named mid-season champions with two games to spare.

It’s the 26th Campioni d’Inverno title for the club and they’ve gone on to win the championship at the end of the season in 18 of those instances.

It should also be noted that since Serie A returned to 20 teams in 2004-05 – and discounting the Calciopoli seasons – the side leading at the half-way stage of the campaign have always gone on to celebrate in May.

Last season, Juventus also wrapped up the Winter title with a win against Atalanta – that 2-0 victory came in Bergamo.

Even before he took a couple of paces towards the ball, you just knew something special was about to happen. Andrea Pirlo's stunning free-kick put Sunday's game beyond Atalanta and ensured that Juventus will end 2012 at the top of Serie A. It is the only fitting place for the Italy midfielder to spend the winter break after a calendar year of magnificent proportions.

A team who had finished seventh in the league in consecutive seasons has been transformed since Pirlo's arrival from AC Milan in 2011, and the last 12 months have been the best of his career. Since January, he has scored nine goals and laid on another 22 in 61 games for club and country. For a player whose starting position is so far removed from the opposition goal, that assist rate is a phenomenal record, and outlines just how much he adds to the Bianconeri.

But Pirlo has always been a bit different. His switch to a role at the base of midfield while under former coach Carlo Ancelotti at Milan sparked many a copycat move by trainers around the globe, but nobody has been able to reproduce his form in the role. His consistent quality has helped to make him one of the most loved and respected footballers in the game, and many now consider him to be one of the best technicians never to have been seriously considered for a Ballon d'Or at any stage of his career.

ANDREA PIRLO'S PHENOMENAL 2012

Pirlo - Nine goals and 22 assists in 61 games

Having never come any higher than fifth place in the race for the world player of the year accolade, this should arguably have been his time. He should have been in the top three at the very least.

As the basis for a pressing game that has made Juventus into an attacking monster few have been able to tame, Pirlo has taken the side onto two whole new levels, first domestically, and then in the Champions League. Served by the legwork of Arturo Vidal and assisted by willing runners Claudio Marchisio, Kwadwo Asamoah and Stephan Lichtsteiner, he is nothing less than the Serie A champions' focal point. At the hub of far too many Juve goals to mention, he is the irreplaceable heart of the side, as proven by Antonio Conte's reluctance to rest him despite the hectic nature of his calendar of late.

He was also the guy driving Italy around the park as they confounded a huge number of pundits to reach the Euro 2012 final, and then when the Azzurri needed to get their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a decent start, Pirlo was the man who got them going again. Carrying his Juventus form into the international arena, he had rediscovered the touch that had previously made him such a widely regarded footballer's footballer.

And yet this has been no ordinary year, even for a player who was spectacular in 2006, when he became a world champion with Italy, and in the seasons ending 2003 and 2004 which led to him being crowned as a king, first of Europe and then of the Bel Paese. Pirlo's 2012 has topped even those outstanding years, and while the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony will not feature the 33-year-old, that cannot take away from what he has achieved in the past 12 months.

So when the prizes are handed out at Fifa's big gala next month, worry not over Pirlo's absence. Instead, simply raise a glass to a legend who has outdone himself once more. Just ask Juventus and Italy fans if they need him to have a golden ball under his arm in order to appreciate his magnificent contributions of the last 12 months.

• Miroslav Klose's late winner saw Lazio come up trumps against Inter on Saturday night to continue the Nerazzurri's recent misery. While victories over Palermo and Napoli appeared to have put Andrea Stramaccioni's men back on track, their loss at the Stadio Olimpico was a reminder that they have shown some real failings of late, following their win against Juventus with just seven points from six league games. They could claim they were unlucky in the capital given that both Fredy Guarin and Antonio Cassano struck the woodwork, but in all truth they struggled to deal with Klose for much of the night, and the Germany international should have scored from a simple chance just moments before firing home the game's only goal. There is still much for Inter to do.
