'This was important for us, the club & the fans' - Klose

The Germany striker has played down his role in Lazio's derby win

over Roma, but was delighted to make a contribution to his side's comeback.

Nov 14, 2012

Lazio forward Miroslav Klose believes that his side's 3-2 derby victory over Roma in Serie A on Sunday is important for everyone associated with the club.

Vladimir Petkovic's men fell behind to an early Erik Lamela goal, but fought back with goals from the veteran forward, Antonio Candreva and Stefano Mauri to claim a narrow victory in a thrilling contest.

“This was a very important victory for us, the club and the fans,” the Germany international told reporters.

“It was difficult to play on this pitch, but we put in a great performance. Am I a decisive man in the derby? No, the important thing is that the team does well and wins.

"I am not interested in who scores or not, just that we got the points."

Having suffered from a difficult start at his current club, Candreva was particularly delighted over having netted the all-important equaliser by converting a free-kick.

“It was a curious game,” he commented. “We managed to get it back on track before half-time, but derbies are always one-off occasions.

"I have dreamed of this goal since the moment I arrived here."

Lazio now sit in fifth place in Serie A, nine points behind current leaders Juventus.

Pepe back for Juventus

Nov 15, 2012

Simone Pepe should be at the disposal of Juventus boss Antonio Conte for the game against Lazio this weekend.

The giornalaccio rosa dello Sport is suggesting that the Italian international will be named in the squad for the Juventus Stadium tie.

The attacking midfielder has yet to make an appearance in 2012-13 for the Italian champions because of injury.

Pepe has been out of the side since he picked up a left thigh muscle problem in the Trofeo TIM tournament on July 21.

The 29-year-old was a key man for the Old Lady last term, especially in the 4-3-3 system, as he scored six goals in 31 League games.

Klose ready for Juventus test

Nov 15, 2012

Lazio are hopeful that Miroslav Klose will be ready to face Juventus this weekend after a bout of the flu.

The German, seven goals in 11 League games this season, is a doubt after he missed Germany’s 0-0 draw with Holland last night.

However, Klose took part in this morning’s training session at Formello and Sky Sport Italia are suggesting that he will be ready to take on Juve on Saturday.

The Biancocelesti, fresh from their 3-2 win over Roma in the derby, will be without the suspended Stefano Mauri and Senad Lulic for their trip to the Juventus Stadium.

Hernanes: 'Juve are beatable'

Nov 15, 2012

Hernanes is confident Lazio can beat Juventus in Turin on Saturday. “After Inter something has broken and now we all believe we can win there.”

The Brazilian is on stunning form and still celebrating the 3-2 victory in the Rome derby.

“We did what we had to against Roma, as we were the ‘home’ side and couldn’t help but win,” said Hernanes.

“I think Lazio have been doing well for some time and it’s not a single game that changes the view of the fans. It’s always important to do well and we want to do it with Juve too.

“Now there is Juventus and we know this is a difficult place to play. If you’d asked me two weeks ago, I would’ve said it was an impossible mission and Juve were unbeatable.

“However, after Inter’s victory something has broken, maybe even subconsciously, and now we all believe that we can win there.”

Senad Lulic, Stefano Mauri and Juve’s Andrea Pirlo are all suspended for the big Saturday game, which kicks off at 17.00 GMT.

“These are three important absentees, but both teams have the strength in depth to ensure nobody is indispensable.

“If we sit and wait for Juventus, then they will eventually score a goal, so we have to play and attack them first.”

Juve ready for testing week

Nov 16, 2012

Juventus begins a potentially season-defining week when it hosts fellow Serie A high-flyer Lazio in Turin this weekend.

Juve could move seven points clear of the chasing pack with victory over the Roman side, although it could be forgiven for having one eye on its crunch midweek UEFA Champions League clash.

Reigning European champion Chelsea will arrive at the Juventus Stadium in midweek knowing that if it takes a point from its visit it will all but end Juve's hopes of progressing.

And with a tough trip to AC Milan to follow next weekend striker Mirko Vucinic knows there is little room for error.

"We cannot drop our guard this week," the former Roma striker told his official website.

"These are three game which could determine the destiny of our season, between Scudetto and Champions League. We cannot afford to put a foot wrong, especially against Chelsea."

Lazio's visit will have extra incentive for Vucinic given his roots to the capital and after the Biancocelesti beat his former club 3-2 in a stormy contest last weekend.

Lazio skipper Stefano Mauri misses out after he saw red late in the match but striker Miroslav Klose - who has netted seven goals in 11 league games this term - is set to recover from the illness that kept him out of Germany's midweek goalless draw with Netherlands.

Lazio has lost three of its past four league away games including a 4-0 reverse at Catania a fortnight ago.

Juventus will be missing their creative spark from the midfield for the visit of Lazio as Andrea Pirlo is suspended.

Likely to deputise is Paul Pogba, who might feel slightly aggrieved he has not featured more regularly for the Turin outfit as he has been reliable when called upon, though, did not help himself by missing training twice in the week leading up to last weekend's clash.

Having endured a 3-1 defeat at the hands of fierce rivals Inter, the Bianconeri responded with an emphatic 6-1 win over Pescara to once again restore their four-point lead at the top of Serie A.

Striker Fabio Quagliarella netted a hat-trick while Sebastian Giovinco scored two and therefore it would be most surprising if they were to rotate forwards after the dazzling display by both attackers against the Delfini.

Another positive for the Juve boss is the return of Simone Pepe, who has yet to play for the hosts since suffering an injury before the start of the season, so expect him to feature at some point in this match. Paolo De Ceglie will not however, as he is still recovering from a thigh strain.

Meanwhile, Lazio will be buoyed by their thrilling 3-2 victory over Roma in the Rome derby last week. The Biancocelesti trail the league leaders by nine points and currently lie in fifth position.

Although they are strong at home having only been defeated once in six attempts, their away form has been more turbulent as they have lost half their games on their travels - to Napoli (3-0), Fiorentina (2-0) and Catania (4-0) respectively.

They will have to see if they can achieve something from the Juventus Stadium without the services of winger Senad Lulic and midfielder Stefano Mauri who are both suspended while Brazilian midfielder Ederson is injured.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Juventus won the last encounter between the two sides on their way to the Scudetto with a narrow 2-1 victory. Stefano Mauri grabbed an equaliser after Simone Pepe had put the hosts in front, but Alessandro Del Piero scored the winner eight minutes from time.

• The Bianconeri have scored 10 goals in their previous two outings in all competitions. Antonio Conte's men followed up their 4-0 Champions League win over Nordsjaelland with a thumping 6-1 win over Pescara. They even had a friendly midweek against Valle d'Aosta, putting nine past the Pro Lega side.

• The hosts' only defeat this season was a surprise 3-1 defeat to Andrea Stamaccioni's Inter side which prevented them from going 50 games unbeaten in Serie A.

• Lazio have not won in their last 15 attempts against Juventus in the league and have lost their last four Serie A matches against the Bianconeri.

• Antonio Candreva will line-up for the Biancocelesti against his old side having played every game in Serie A for the visitors this season.

• Striker Miroslav Klose is Vladimir Petkovic's men's top goalscorer with seven goals. He trails Edinson Cavani (Napoli), Stephan El Shaarawy (AC Milan) and Erik Lamela (Roma) in the scoring charts who all have eight. Juventus' Quagliarella has six.

Players to Watch

52125_186x236.jpg

Paul Pogba

With Pirlo out of the squad, the onus will be on the young Frenchman to fill the void. The 19-year-old has already shown what he is capable of with strong performances when called upon - he even nicked a goal against Bologna to maintain the Bianconeri's unbeaten run before losing to Inter. The jury is still out on his attitude and commitment though, but he can silence the critics with a good performance here.

17956_186x236.jpg

Hernanes

The Brazilian has had a stunning start to the season producing the type of displays which could earn him another call-up to the national side. Having already scored five goals and laid on four for others he has shown he is vitally important to the success of this Lazio team, and with a solid Juve back three his vision, creativity and flair could be the key to getting a result at the Juventus Stadium at the weekend.

Prediction

Matches between the two are usually tight affairs and although Juve have gone on to win the last four games against the Biancocelesti, they have been by a one-goal margin. That said, Antonio Conte's men have seemingly been unaffected by their Inter blip, while Lazio have struggled on their travels, conceding 9 goals in three games, which all points to a home win on Saturday.

Preview: Juventus vs. Lazio

Nov 16, 2012

Juventus will be keen to extend their lead at the top of Serie A on Saturday when they welcome Lazio to Turin.

The Italian champions are currently four points clear at the top with 31 points from 12 matches, having bounced back from their home defeat to Inter Milan with a 6-1 hammering of Pescara away.

Sandwiched between those two games was the 4-0 victory over FC Nordsjaelland in the Champions League, meaning that Antonio Conte's side are back on top form after a minor derailment.

Lazio too seem to have recovered from their poor form with two competitive wins in a row, including a 3-2 win against Roma in the Rome derby last weekend.

Vladimir Petkovic's side are currently fifth in the league standings with 22 points from 12 matches, just four points off the third and final Champions league spot.

Midfielder Stefano Mauri and defender Senad Lulic are suspended for Lazio. Christian Brocchi and Stefan Radu could return to the Aquile starting lineup.

Andrea Pirlo is suspended for Juve.

Pogba set to start for Juventus after disciplinary issue

Nov 16, 2012

Paul Pogba is expected to return to the Juventus midfield for their match with Lazio on Saturday (18:00) after being dropped for their 6-1 win at Pescara because of disciplinary issues.

The 19-year-old, who was left in Turin for last Saturday's win after twice turning up late for training, will take the place of the suspended Andrea Pirlo, according to the giornalaccio rosa Dello Sport.

Despite the league leaders having a crucial Champions League clash with European champions Chelsea on Tuesday (20:45) and several players having been on international duty midweek, Juventus are unlikely to make many other changes for the match against fifth-placed Lazio.

In-form striker Fabio Quagliarella will almost certainly start alongside the returning Mirko Vucinic, who was injured during their 3-1 loss to Inter Milan a fortnight ago, after his stunning hat-trick against Pescara last week.

MATCH PREVIEW

Nov 16, 2012

Buoyed by impressive victories last weekend, Juventus are eager to gain added momentum whilst Lazio aim to keep close to the top three.

Stung by Inter a fortnight ago, the Bianconeri took out their anger on Nordsjaelland and Pescara. A 4-0 victory over the Danes was followed up by a crushing 6-1 result against the Abruzzese outfit. Fabio Quagliarella was particularly impressive, netting a hat-trick. The win, coupled with a Nerazzurri hiccup, restored Juve’s four point lead atop Serie A.

Antonio Conte believes the defeat reminded his side they must play with high intensity at all times. As they begin a crucial period, which also includes decisive Champions League contests versus Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk, they can confirm their past two results when they face the Romans.

Andrea Pirlo reached the yellow card limit against Pescara and so sits this match out. Paul Pogba - dropped for Pescara after twice arriving to training late – is expected to start in his place. Paolo De Ceglie remains sidelined, but Mirko Vucinic returns to the squad. Simone Pepe is a possibility to be included after featuring for the Primavera last week.

Lazio won an absorbing Derby della Capitale 3-2 over their hated Giallorossi neighbours on Sunday. Conceding an early goal and driving rain did little to dampen their enthusiasm and grip on proceedings. Antonio Candreva and Miroslav Klose put the Aquile ahead before the break, while Stefano Mauri sealed the result shortly after.

The win was their third straight derby triumph and affirmed Lazio as European contenders. Boss Vladimir Petkovic claimed that with the win, the Biancocelesti proved their quality. Currently occupying a Europa League place, they sit just four points outside the Champions League zone.

Mauri’s late derby red card, plus another yellow for Senad Lulic, means the duo are banned for the trip to Turin. Meanwhile, Klose missed Germany’s friendly with the Netherlands due to a bout of flu but is expected to take his regular place in attack from the opening whistle.

A 2-1 win for Juve in this fixture last April was sealed by a late Alessandro Del Piero free kick. It proved an important stepping stone towards Scudetto glory and was the Old Lady’s 43rd win over Lazio in 68 meetings. The visitors have left Turin with maximum points on just eight occasions.

Keep an eye on: Fabio Quagliarella (Juventus) – Unstoppable against Pescara, he netted the first triple of his career and also assisted two goals. Eta Beta will want a positive performance to confirm his place in the starting XI for the visit of Chelsea in midweek.

Form guide: Juventus (W W W L W) Lazio (W L D L W)

Last season: Juventus 2-1 Lazio

Stat fact: Juventus have netted in each of their past 11 meetings with Lazio at home. The last time the Bianconeri went goalless came in a 1-0 reverse in 1999-2000.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Juventus: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Isla, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Vucinic, Quagliarella

Lazio: Marchetti; Konko, Biava, Dias, Radu; Candreva, Brocchi, Ledesma, Hernanes, Gonzalez; Klose

Nov 16, 2012

The French midfielder was left out of the squad for the trip to Pescara a week ago as he turned up late to two separate training sessions.

But the 19-year-old is back in the squad for the match against the Biancocelesti, as Andrea Pirlo misses out through suspension.

Squad: Buffon, Lucio, Chiellini, Caceres, Pogba, Pepe, Marchisio, Vucinic, De Ceglie, Giovinco, Barzagli, Bendtner, Bonucci, Padoin, Asamoah, Vidal, Giaccherini, Lichtsteiner, Quagliarella, Storari, Matri, Isla, Rubinho, Marrone.

Juventus v Lazio: Preview

Nov 16, 2012

Lazio will head to the Juventus Stadium in confident mood tomorrow, hoping to follow the example of Inter Milan and become only the second side to win at the Turin club's new home.

The Nerazzurri reopened the Serie A title race with a 3-1 away win over the Bianconeri a fortnight ago and, although Juve bounced straight back with a 6-1 win at Pescara - a result which, combined with Inter's loss at Atalanta, restored their four-point lead - Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic still believes his team have a chance this weekend.

"Juve are favourites for the Scudetto, but we are capable of beating them in Turin," said Petkovic, whose side's hopes have been boosted by the suspension of influential Juve midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

"To do it, we are going to have to play 20-30 per cent better than we did in the derby (Lazio beat Roma 3-2 last weekend), which is the only way of beating them in their own stadium."

Petkovic hopes to be able to field striker Miroslav Klose, who has never scored against Juve, even though the Germany international remains under the weather after a bout of flu.

"He is sick and is coughing, so we have got to be careful," Petkovic added. "He is not in top condition, but his dedication to this club is incredible.

"He has trained, despite not being well, and it was pointless him going off to play for his country."

Klose remained in Rome this week after dining with Joachim Low in the Eternal City last Sunday night after the Germany coach had been to check up on his progress in the Rome derby.

It remains touch and go whether the Biancoceleste's top scorer will be able to try to break his duck against Juve, but the absence of Pirlo on the other side is certain.

The Italy international is suspended and will miss his first league game of the season, providing 19-year-old French midfielder Paul Pogba with an opportunity to stake a claim for a more regular place in the side.

"He is a very confident lad, but never arrogant. He is just sure about what he is doing," Juve coach Antonio Conte said in a chat with fans on the club's website. "Pogba will become the best player in the world."

Juventus-Lazio Preview: Round 12

The Somewhat Calm Before The Storm

Nov 16, 2012

Juventus Stadium, I've missed you. I know it's only been a few days, but I missed you. Thank you.

It's not exactly the most insightful way to look at the way Juventus' schedule is about to be, but I'm gonna say it anyways: It's about to get real real.

Thank you! Goodnight everybody! Thanks for stopping by!

All right, so that's not the complete extent of this pre-match post. Not even close. This is Juventus-Lazio, which over the years has been anything but boring. Just look at the last time Lazio visited Juventus Stadium. Was that boring? Nope. And if you try to say so, then maybe we need to have a little talk.

This game, at least on paper, shouldn't really be any different.

Lazio are off to a pretty darn good start under Vladimir Petkovic, entering the tie against Juventus in fifth place. It's not exactly the kind of start that Juve have enjoyed — recording 31 points out of a possible 36 — but it's still very respectable, especially when you consider that it's under a new manager.

Still, there's the simple facts that 1) Juventus continuing the momentum that has been built in the post-Inter loss world and 2) this is the beginning of one hell of a stretch in the schedule that could determine not only how the Old Lady enters the month of December, but also what Juve may or may not be doing in Europe come January.

One word. You know it by now. AVANTI.

GOOD NEWS

The train is rolling at high speeds again after the loss to Inter two weekends ago. And it hasn't been just a couple of wins and collect the three points, they've been absolute thumpings. It's the best kind of result that you could possibly see after a result like Juventus suffered back on the first Saturday in November. This team could have — and let me emphasize 'could have' — had some kind of hangover after the loss to Inter. Nope. That didn't happen. Now they've started another winning streak and are pretty much showing that the same old Juventus is still around.

The best out all of it, though: Juventus aren't blabbering to the press now. They're quietly going about they're business, not puffing out their chests because they've won two straight games. That's what I like to see — and (not) hear.

BAD NEWS

No Andrea Pirlo due to suspension. Pretty sure that's easy to figure out, folks.

Other than that, not much. Everybody is healthy and the team is playing well. Sounds good to me.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

1. The Pogba Effect. WHY? BECAUSE. Okay, seriously. Because it's pretty much established that the former Manchester United youngster who continues to make Sir Alex facepalm in frustration is the first center midfielder off the bench these days. And with Pirlo being out due to injury, there's really no argument as to who will step in and fill the maestro's void — Pogba.

2. Right-Wing Wackiness. No, no political discussions. In a post-Presidential election kind of time. This is regarding who will be starting on the right wing in Juventus' 3-5-2 formation. As you all can see below, I'm thinking Mauricio Isla should get the nod. Others may think that Stephan Lichtsteiner should get the start against his former club. The way Isla has played his past few starts, he's starting to show signs of the player we saw at Udinese the past couple of years. And if that really does continue, Isla should be in the starting lineup more often than not.

3. If Fabio Quagliarella can keep the good times going. As we discussed a few days ago, the importance of Quags regaining his pre-injury form is a major boost to the current Juventus side. The biggest thing on everybody's mind is now how long he can keep the goals coming. His goal-to-minute is insane right now. And to think he'd keep it at that level would certainly be a lot to ask of him. But, if he wants to score a goal or two over the next couple of games, I wouldn't object to it.

4. Who starts along with Quagliarella? To be honest, I don't know what could happen with this. Most media outlets in Italy are thinking it'll be Mirko Vucinic, who hasn't played much at all the last few weeks. Many of us will probably be leaning towards Sebastian Giovinco for the simple fact that he's playing well and seems to be forming a solid chemistry with Quagliarella. But Antonio Conte may continue to rotate away and start Nicklas Bendtner for all we know. Well, maybe not. But I dunno.

5. Not looking forward to Chelsea. But how do we know? Well, if Juventus come out flat as a damn board, then there will be your answer. I doubt that it will happen for the simple fact of what the few players who have done interviews have said. They wouldn't say anything bad, really, so maybe I'm just falling into a trap. But this isn't like some relegation side coming to town before Chelsea arrives in Turin. Saturday is a big game. Tuesday is even bigger.

My starting XI (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Isla, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Vucinic, Quagliarella

Lazio worried about Klose

Nov 16, 2012

Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic has included Miroslav Klose in his squad for the trip to Juventus, but he’s not at his best.

The striker missed Germany’s midweek draw against Holland through illness and he’s still a doubt for the Turin clash.

“We have to be cautious with Klose,” the tactician stated. “He’s not very well at all, he’s got a cough and, although he has trained, he’s not in top shape.”

The capital outfit will arrive in Turin in confident mood after they beat city rivals Roma 3-2 last weekend.

“Juventus are favourites for the Scudetto, but we have the ability to win in Turin,” the tactician continued.

“In order to do so we will have to play like we did against Roma, but then add another 20-30 per cent. That’s the only way to beat them in their stadium.”

Petkovic also urged his troops to be more alert.

“We are struggling to defend set-pieces,” he added. “We have to improve our concentration and individuals need to take more responsibility.”

Senad Lulic and Stefano Mauri are suspended for the game.

Squad: Marchetti, Bizzarri, Carrizo; Biava, Cavanda, Dias, Konko, Radu, Ciani, Stankevicius; Cana, Ledesma, Onazi, Ederson, Candreva, Gonzalez, Brocchi, Hernanes; Floccari, Kozak, Rocchi, Zarate, Klose

Juventus vs Lazio PREVIEW: What Was That Noise??

kndhk.jpg

Nov 16, 2012

After a brief international interlude, Juventus return to action with a run of five games which may well determine how the 2012-13 season is remembered. Still to come are matches against Chelsea, Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk and the first Turin derby of the campaign but, before all those, the Bianconeri host Lazio in a game that will tell us much about both sides. Here’s Adam with the preview.

The break came at a bad time for la vecchia Signora as she had been in irresistible form ever since that loss to you-know-who almost two weeks ago and Antonio Conte will be hoping the brief pause has not slowed the form which saw his men score ten goals in their two previous outings. Having recorded an straightforward 4-0 win over FC Nordsjælland they then completely destroyed poor Pescara by a 6-1 score-line which included a triple from Fabio Quagliarella, the third of which was a contender for goal of the season until Joe Hart recorded a superb assist for some big Swedish guy on Wednesday night…

Anywaaaaaaay, back to the matter at hand and Juventus have won five of their last six matches against Lazio who must look back as far as April 2009 for their last win over the Bianconeri. Since then it has been an almost entirely uneven encounter, starting with the match which saw THAT Momo Sissoko pass of a lifetime to Milos Krasic and, ultimately, a ‘Nando Muslera own goal.

As well as being one-sided affair, it has also largely been about one man as Simone Pepe has carved out a reputation as the metaphorical thorn in the Biancoceleste side. Indeed, not since Andrew Toney single-handedly ripped apart the Boston Celtics in the early 1980’s has one man so pained a team with ‘Speedy’ netting goals in all three matches since Momo’s career highlight. Those goals have included two match winners and if you heard a groaning noise during Thursday the chances are – unless it was Marco once more banging his mattress – that it was the collective sighs of Laziale everywhere at the news the Juventus number seven was finally available for selection once again.

Lazio

The Rome-based club are enjoying much success at the moment, following on from their fifth place finish in 2009-10 to capture fourth last term and currently sit fifth once again after their worst spell of the campaign. That encompassed a three game spell in which they picked up just one point – a draw against Torino – after losing to both Fiorentina (0-2) and Catania (0-4).

They arrested that mini-slump last week with an ill-tempered derby victory over Roma but as a result have lost both Senad Lulic and Stefano Mauri to suspension. Both have been essential to the 4-1-4-1 formation implemented by the impressive Vladimir Petkovic since his arrival this past summer. The Bosnian Coach has made two major changes to the playing style of Lazio, dispensing the three man defence so beloved by his predecessor Edy Reja and pushing the highly talented Hernanes further up the pitch.

The latter of those switches has been handsomely rewarded with the Brazilian rediscovering the form of his debut Serie A season and he currently has five goals and three assists to his name as a result. Also vital to their success is the scoring touch of Miroslav Klose, a man who epitomises the phrase ‘goal machine.’ The German striker has defied all expectation and is averaging a goal every two games since landing in Italy a year ago including seven in just ten starts this term.

Former Juve man and Alberto Zaccheroni favourite Antonio Candreva started for Italy on Wednesday night and that, his first Azzurri nod since his time in Turin almost three years ago, was deserved recognition of his excellent performances in this new look Lazio set up. Occupying a role on the right of midfield he has recorded three goals, including a well taken free-kick during the aforementioned derby triumph. His combination with another ex-Juventus player – right back Abdoulay Konko has been a good source of crosses for Klose all season and is one aspect of their play that must be guarded against.

Probable Formation: (4-1-4-1)

MARCHETTI; KONKO, BIAVA, DIAS, RADU; BROCCHI; CANDREVA, LEDESMA, HERNANES, GONZALEZ; KLOSE

Juventus

For the Bianconeri, this match is something of a double edged sword as not only must Conte coax the best possible performance, he must also manage his squad through this difficult spell of games, ensuring the players chosen remain fresh for the variety of challenges each fixture presents. In some respects the suspension of Andrea Pirlo – due to an accumulation of yellow cards – removes some of that pressure as finding a way to rest the Bearded Genius has proven to be one of the most difficult balancing acts of Conte’s management.

Elsewhere, surely there can be no doubt that Quagliarella continues to be selected in attack, his triple against Pescara MUST all but guarantee another start here. His partner is perhaps most likely to be Sebastian Giovinco as Mirko Vucinic is short of match fitness due to a recent niggle. The rest of the XI is likely to be the first choice team as many, including Gigi Buffon and Leo Bonucci were rested during the midweek games in order to allow international coaches to examine the credentials of other players.

Perhaps the biggest doubt is over who exactly will take over in midfield from Pirlo as a number of reports in the Italian media suggest Emmanuele Giaccherini may be given the nod over Paul Pogba. This would be entirely down to the disciplinary issues that saw the young Frenchman dropped entirely from last weekend’s call ups. However, both Conte and the player have stated the matter is now closed and it would be no surprise to see him given the nod in order to draw a line under the matter completely.

This leaves us with perhaps just one burning question: What minute does someone make way for “The Lazio Killer” to make his return?

Probable Formation: (3-5-2)

BUFFON; BARZAGLI, BONUCCI, CHIELLINI; ISLA, MARCHISIO, POGBA, VIDAL, ASAMOAH; QUAGLIARELLA, GIOVINCO

Petkovic: Klose 'not in top shape' ahead of Juve clash

The Biancocelesti boss is concerned with the forward who is currently struggling with fitness

issues, but he remains confident that his side can be successful against The Old Lady.

Nov 16, 2012

Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic has revealed that striker Miroslav Klose is doubtful for this Saturday's encounter against Juventus.

Suffering from a cold, the experienced Germany international had already missed his country's draw against Netherlands.

And according to the Bosnian boss, it looks as though he will not have fully recovered in time for the clash against the title holders.

“We have to be cautious with Klose,” the tactician stated. "He’s not very well at all. He’s got a cough and, although he has trained, he’s not in top shape,” the 49-year-old tactician explained to reporters.

But the Biancocelesti coach is confident of causing an upset at Juventus Stadium on Saturday, having took three points off their fiercest rivals in a thrilling 3-2 victory last weekend.

He continued: “Juventus are favourites for the Scudetto, but we have the ability to win in Turin.

“In order to do so, we will have to play like we did against Roma, but then add another 20 to 30 per cent.

"That’s the only way to beat them in their stadium.”

Petkovic admitted, though, if they are to get a result which would end their four-game losing streak against the Bianconeri, then, his side need to be more focused - especially at free-kicks and corners.

He added: “We are struggling to defend set-pieces,

“We have to improve our concentration and individuals need to take more responsibility.”

Lazio sit fifth in Serie A. Their match at Juventus on Saturday kicks off at 18.00 CET.

Juventus v Lazio Preview :

Can The Old Lady Bring The Eagles Down?

Nov 16, 2012

Games are approaching thick and fast for Antonio Conte’s Juventus with high-flying Lazio next in line for Serie A Champions Juventus in what will be an important second half of the month for the Bianconeri. Vladimir Petkovic’s Lazio have been outstanding this term with their latest victory coming against bitter rivals Roma in the heated Capital derby. The Aquile now occupy 5th position in the league standings.

For Juventus, the loss against Inter clearly spurred them on back in the right direction. After registering unconvincing wins throughout the course of the campaign, the Bianconeri are coming off their two most authoritative displays. The dismantling of Nordsjaelland in the Champions League was followed up by a hammering of Serie A new-boys Pescara. The Old Lady has racked up 10 goals in two games following the conclusion of their magnificent unbeaten run. Juventus are now 4 points clear at the top of the table.

Team News and Tactical Brief

Juventus

The aggression and intensity that was seen time and again last season from Juventus has re-emerged displacing the arrogance that was evident during the initial stages of this campaign. Pescara were pulverized by a dominant Juventus that put 6 past them while in truth it could have been a lot worse for the Delfini. Juevntus have managed to channel the anger that came from the Inter defeat to their own good. Juventus have been devastatingly good and this comes at a crucial period with games that could shape the rest of their season on the horizon.

Antonio Conte will be upbeat following the news that Simone Pepe is at his disposal once again and could finally earn some playing time. The manager should stick to his 3-5-2 formation. The defence picks itself with the trio of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini marshaling Serie A’s joint tightest defence.

Andrea Pirlo’s yellow card at Pescara sees him ruled out of this game and earn a well deserved rest in the bargain. Young French prodigy Paul Pogba is in line to replace him in the heart of midfield alongside Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal. It will be interesting to observe how Pogba, an all action midfielder performs in the center of the midfield trio. The Chilean International Vidal, after blowing hot and cold in the early part of the season has scored four goals in his last four outings. Marchisio’s late diagonal runs into the box have been found hard to pick up by opposition players and while he may not be hitting the back of the net as much as he would like, he still remains a vital cog in the Juventus machine and one of the most tactically sound players around.

Attack has been Juventus’ short-coming but you would never guess it considering the fact that the Bianconeri are top-scorers in the league but that has been the case thanks to the midfield often bailing out the misfiring strikers. But Fabio Quagliarella has hit the ground running this season and seems to have finally found his feet. His hat-trick against Pescara should tie down a spot for him spearheading the Juventus attack. Tricky Montenegrin International Mirko Vucinic could be opted for in favor of Sebastian Giovinco in attack.

Probable Starting Line-up (3-5-2): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Isla, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah; Vucinic, Quagliarella

Juventus-Lazio.jpg

Lazio

Petkovic’s appointment as successor to Edy Reja as Lazio’s manager was met with skepticism by Lazio fans. Indeed Petkovic was an unknown entity for Serie A fans but since the start of the season, his side have impressed. The recent Rome derby victory will do nothing but endear him even more to the Lazio faithful.

Petkovic is expected to deploy his standard 4-5-1 formation. A key absentee comes in the form of Senand Lulic who is serving a one game ban on account of accumulation of yellow cards. Lulic who had two spells under Petkovic at Bellinzona and Young Boys has really come to the fore this season and firmly established himself as one of the strongest full-backs in the league. Stefan Radu is expected to take his place at left-back. The central defensive duo of Andre Dias and Giuseppe Biava have forged a commanding partnership in the heart of Lazio’s defence and won’t be easy to bypass.

Midfield remains the strongest area of the pitch for Lazio. Former Juventus man Antonio Candreva has emerged risen up this season with exciting displays racking up 3 goals and 4 assists. His performances also earned him a start for Italy during the mid-week International friendly against France. Hernanes is the chief creator and should play just ahead of the midfield double pivots – Cristian Ledesma and Cristian Brocchi. Uruguayan Alvaro Gonzalez will man the left-flank. He will have to help out Stefan Radu at left-back in a bid to stop the rampaging runs of Mauricio Isla. Stefano Mauri is also suspended after he picked up a red card against Roma.

The focal point of attack should be Miroslav Klose. The German International missed out on his national side’s midweek friendly against Netherlands after suffering from a bout of flu. He, however, much to the relief of the Lazio fans seem to have recovered in time for this vital game. Klose leads the scoring charts for Lazio with 7 goals to his name. Lazio will be on the back-foot during the early stages of the game. They will be organized and look to break Juventus on the counter.

Probable Starting Line-up (4-5-1): Marchetti(GK); Konko, Dias, Biava, Radu; Candreva, Ledsema, Hernanes, Brocchi, Gonzalez; Klose

Players To Watch Out For

Claudio Marchisio (Juventus)

Il Principino is the silent performer in the Juventus midfield. Recently awarded Juventus’ Player of the Month for October, Marchisio is an essential part of the Juventus trio. His late forays into the box from deep have been untracked and could cause the Lazio defence a few problems. With the absence of Pirlo, a the creative onus from midfield will fall on his shoulders.

Miroslav Klose (Lazio)

The German veteran has taken Serie A by storm since his arrival last summer. His performances have been clinically vintage and is an indispensable part of the Lazio machine. Against a sturdy Juventus defence, he needs to put on his shooting boots and take his chances using his predator like instincts.

Prediction

Juventus 2 – 1 Lazio

The home side are slight favorites over Lazio to nick this game considering the Biancocelesti’s woeful form on the road. Juventus will dominate possession in the early exchanges but if Lazio manage to hold their own and silence the crowd as the game wears on we could witness a stalemate. The Bianconeri, though, will be riding on the back of their excellent recovery since the Inter loss and should do enough to secure the three points.

Zoff fired up by Juve-Lazio

Nov 17, 2012

Former Lazio and Juventus Coach Dino Zoff is looking forward to today’s clash and was “convinced by Vladimir Petkovic straight away.”

The Biancocelesti visit the Juventus Stadium with a 18.00 kick-off.

“I saw a great Lazio side in the derby,” Zoff told Radio Manà Manà.

“They have been somewhat inconsistent during the last few weeks, but I hope the Lazio we saw in the first half of the derby is the one that steps out in Turin.

“I was convinced by Petkovic straight away because he was able to find the right placement for all the players at his disposal.

“Having said that, he should keep his players on their toes more to avoid the serious defensive holes on some of the goals conceded this season.”

Zoff was a player for Juventus and their Coach from 1988-90, then went to Lazio as tactician, then director and eventually President before returning to the Biancocelesti bench in January 2001.
