'You can't afford to lose, plain and simple'

Club legend Robert Pires visited The Armoury store on Thursday to sign copies of the new ‘Arsenal Greatest Premier League Games’ DVD. We caught up with him to get his take on the derby...

Robert, it's the north London derby against Tottenham on Saturday. Did you really look forward to these games when you were at Arsenal?

Yes, very much so, simply because it's the derby and it's the big one. It's always a tough game with a cracking atmosphere. But above all it's a match you can't afford to lose, plain and simple. Over the years a great rivalry has developed between the two clubs and that's why when you play at home it's a must-win for the fans.

What are your favourite memories from these games?

I've got quite a few! From a personal point of view, I've been lucky enough to score quite a few goals against Tottenham, either in the league or in the FA Cup. I always enjoyed playing against them as I knew that the games would be really difficult as the Tottenham players were always really up to beat us. But that's why I always enjoyed playing against Spurs!

You scored eight goals in 12 games against Tottenham. Why do you think you had such a good record against them?

I don't know, it's a good question! As I mentioned before, I really enjoyed playing against them, especially at Highbury where there was always a really good atmosphere and I had a great bond with the fans. But you get certain teams who you always do well against.

How much of a buzz did it give you to win the title at Tottenham in 2004?

Not just for me, but for the players, for Arsène Wenger and especially for the fans. It was something very special, it may never happen again [that we] clinch the league against Tottenham, our biggest rivals. If you were to ask the Arsenal fans that question, I'm sure that they would say it's one of their greatest moments too.

How confident are you that Arsenal will win against Tottenham on Saturday?

It's always hard in derby games, but you have to fight right until the end. The players know that it will be tough so you need good team spirit and a high level of motivation, which is always vital. If that's there, anyone can be beaten.

Vermaelen - The derby is not a normal game

Thomas Vermaelen is well aware that Saturday's game against Tottenham means that little bit more than an average league fixture - and believes the Gunners can use it as a springboard for success.

Last season’s 5-2 victory at Emirates Stadium is etched into Arsenal folklore and it sparked a fine run of form as Vermaelen and his team-mates made a late surge for a Champions League spot. The Arsenal captain is convinced that strength can be drawn from what happened last time around.

He told the Official Matchday Programme: “This isn’t a normal game - it’s a special one.

“Practically, we need to get three points on the board, but I think it would give both the fans and the team a massive boost if we won.

"Last season we came back from 2-0 down, working really hard for a memorable turnaround. We want to create the same impetus this time and it’s a big opportunity to do so.

“If you look at the league table, we’re not too far behind third and fourth places. Nothing is lost yet - a win against Spurs would be a big step.”

Now in his fourth season at the Club, Vermaelen is no stranger to derby day. While he is a veteran of the famous rivalry between Ajax and Feyenoord, he believes that Spurs’ visits provoke excitement on another scale.

“Ajax always had a big rivalry with Feyenoord, which was quite similar, but I think it’s even more pronounced here,” he said.

“The level is higher, and it just feels like a step up. This is more intense and you can feel that in the atmosphere in the stadium whenever we play Spurs. Without fail, it’s unbelievable.”

Bacary Sagna says the north London derby is Arsenal’s “game of the season” - and he believes the team can take confidence from February’s 5-2 victory.

Much like the corresponding fixture last term, the Gunners head into Saturday’s match against Tottenham on a mixed run of results.

But Sagna says the players are fully aware of the importance of the game and can be inspired by their comeback against their rivals last time out.

“This is the game of our season because it’s a derby,” Sagna told Arsenal Player. “I think we’re going to have a big atmosphere so everybody is looking forward to it.

“It’s just massive. You can feel the pressure around the stadium. You can feel the pressure on the pitch. We can’t lose that game.

“It was like hell [in last season’s derby]. We were 2-0 down after 25 minutes and I started thinking, ‘No, this is impossible. We can’t lose this game’ and the atmosphere was going down as well. We could feel everyone was upset.

“But they [the fans] kept pushing. That helped a lot. When we scored the first goal, the stadium became magic and everyone pushed us even more. Suddenly we scored the second goal and it was like a movie.”

It was Sagna who scored the crucial goal to halve Arsenal’s deficit in that game, and he was delighted to make such a positive contribution.

“The best way to score goals is to bring many people into the box,” he said. “When I saw the ball going out on to the left side, I started thinking ‘OK, try to bring danger’ and the ball came back to me and I scored. It was magic.

“The only problem was I didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the goal, to celebrate. We were losing and I just wanted to come back.

“When you’re 2-0 down and you score five goals in 60 minutes, you can only think about how good you are and how positive you have to be.

“[Tottenham] will have learnt from that and we have learnt from it as well. We want to take control and the best way to do it is to stay focused from the first minute.

“It changed our season because we got even more confident. From that time, we started winning games and came back.”

Wenger - The derby is in Wilshere's heart

By Chris Harris

Jack Wilshere has the north London derby "in his heart", according to Arsène Wenger.

The 20-year-old has served his one-match suspension for a red card at Manchester United and returns to the Arsenal squad for Saturday's local affair with Tottenham at Emirates Stadium.

Wilshere has played in two derbies - both at White Hart Lane - and Wenger knows how much these games mean to him.

"Jack arrived here at the age of nine years old and that means this game is in his heart, in his brain, for the whole season every year," said Wenger.

"From the youth teams up, the rivalry exists."

Wilshere got another half-hour under his belt in midweek, coming off the bench as England lost 4-2 in Sweden. Wenger is happy with the midfielder's progress since he returned his injury lay-off.

"Yes of course ," said the manager. "He had not played for 17 months and the fact that he just has got over the first three, four games without any setback is very important."

'I understand why Cazorla had to travel'

Get Arsenal Player

By Chris Harris

Arsène Wenger understands why Santi Cazorlahad to go to Panama for Spain's friendly this week - even if he didn't get on the pitch.

The Arsenal playmaker endured one of the more arduous trips of the international break, completing a 10,500-mile round trip before landing in London on Thursday night.

Cazorla will now gather himself for Saturday's north London derby and, although Wenger is concerned that the 27-year-old will be tired, he knows that the Spaniard could not turn down the chance to add to his 50 international caps.

"At the moment, if you are selected you have to go, unless you say you're injured," said Wenger.

"And in Spain, what I understand completely is that the players want to play for the national team and in Spain the competition is so high that if a guy turns it down and there is suspicion there the next time he will not be called up.

"Could Cazorla have done without that trip? Of course. But he could have got injured. So I personally don't complain but he must not be very happy."

A number of Premier League players pulled out of their national squads with injuries and Wenger accepts that it makes life difficult for international coaches.

"I just think it shows you one thing - that this international friendly is not in the best position," said Wenger.

"Having said that I thought England played quite well [against Sweden], it was very interesting to watch, especially in the first half where they did very well.

"They had some positives because they had some young players coming in. I believe a friendly like that is made to try young players, and on that front it was quite positive for England.

"It will be interesting to see who will play over the weekend and who will not play, of all those who have been injured over Europe," added Wenger. "I would personally put 10 pounds on 90 per cent playing."
