The deal is finally done. The wait is over at last. The longest-running transfer saga of the summer has ended with Manchester United making Paul Pogba the most expensive player in football history by agreeing to pay Juventus £93.8 million for the France international.

 

It is a remarkable move for many reasons, not least because the Bianconeri only had to hand over €800,000 in compensation to the Red Devils when they signed the midfielder on a free transfer four years ago.

 

Not that United fans care. They are understandably overjoyed by Pogba's return - but many neutrals are staggered by the size of the free, given this is a player who is coming off the back of an underwhelming and unsuccessful Euro 2016 campaign.

 

As a result, Goal has decided to pitted two opposing views against one another in a debate over whether the 23-year-old represents a sound investment...

THE RIGHT MAN FOR MAN UTD

It has taken Manchester United four years to realise what was immediately evident to Andrea Pirlo. "We saw from his first training session with Juventus that he was special," the former Bianconeri playmaker revealed earlier this year. "There was a disbelief among the senior players that Manchester United had allowed him to leave." Indeed, Juve captain Gianluigi Buffon admitted, "We thought they maybe needed glasses in Manchester!"

 

While Alex Ferguson may have been guilty of shocking short-sightedness, United have, at least, belatedly seen the error of the ways, breaking the transfer fee world record to bring Pogba back to Old Trafford. Is he worth €105m? In truth, no player should command such a fee. As Arsene Wenger quite rightly pointed out, "It is completely crazy if you compare it to normal life."

 

However, there is nothing normal about the world of football and in an environment in which most people know the price of everything but the value of nothing, Pogba's price tag makes sense.

 

 

On a commercial level (and, rather sadly, this counts for a lot these days), United have just acquired one of the most marketable young sports stars on the planet. From a footballing perspective, they have just reclaimed the most complete midfielder in the game today.

 

"I have never seen a player who is so good at his age," Buffon enthused last year. "He is so strong, so technically gifted, has exceptional all-round play. Pogba can do things only Pogba can, similar to [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo."

 

He is not yet at the same level as those two living legends but the point is that he undoubtedly has the ability to get there. Like Messi, he is a former Golden Boy winner, while he has already played a key role in four successive Serie A title triumphs. Pogba has been improving at a rapid rate - nobody racked up more assists in Italy's top flight last season (12) - and the exciting thing for United is that he is only going to get better.

 

Indeed, it is only a matter of time before he wins the Ballon d'Or and, in truth, the question is not really whether Pogba will prove good enough to meet United's expectations - but whether they will prove good enough to meet his.

THE WRONG MAN FOR MAN UTD

Paul Pogba is not Manchester United's messiah; he's a very overpriced boy.

 

This is a deal that sits outside the realms of reason, logic and good taste. Splashing a €110 million transfer fee for a player who isn't a matchwinner like Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale is absurd, as is Pogba's desire to watch Juventus challenge for Champions League while he slugs away in the Europa League with Man Utd.

 

Make no mistake, Pogba is extremely talented. Graced with a poise and pizzazz that few midfielders on the planet are able to match, the 23-year-old has grown into the beating heart of a Juventus side that dominate Italian football.

 

But is he worth €110 million? Does he deserve the tag of the most expensive player in history? Will Jose Mourinho play him in his ideal position? No, probably not, and definitely not.

 

Mourinho plays 4-2-3-1 and Pogba is expected to sit alongside a defensive midfielder behind the four attackers. That won't suit Pogba, who is allowed to roam forwards in an attack-minded central midfield position for Juve.

 

Pogba didn't perform as well for France this summer in a more restrictive role and yet the suits with more money than sense at Old Trafford have decreed that he'll fit into an overrated manager's outdated system without difficulty.

 

 

And let's also be clear about something: Serie A is very different to the Premier League. Pogba was a big fish in a small pond in Italy, where Juventus reign supreme and the style of football is distinctly different.

 

In stark contrast, Man Utd couldn't make the top four last season and will be relying on two over-the-hill strikers (Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney), a promising but inconsistent forward (Anthony Martial), and a teenager with tons of talent but very limited experience (Marcus Rashford) to fire them to glory in 2016-17. Pogba's got magical feet but he's not Houdini.

 

Fifteen years ago, Man Utd broke the English football transfer record by spending £28.1 million on Serie A midfield star Juan Sebastian Veron. The Argentine was expected to be a superstar but couldn't adapt to the pace of the Premier League and, though Sir Alex Ferguson branded Veron's critics "f*cking idiots" during his two-year spell at Old Trafford, he is widely considered one of the biggest flops in the club's history.

 

A decade later, Fergie was the "f*cking idiot" for disillusioning Pogba and it's cost Man Utd a nine-figure sum to buy him back. And like Veron's transfer 15 years ago, this is likely to be another case of a talented midfielder burdened with a huge transfer fee not fitting a belligerent Man Utd manager's masterplan.

Marco Laria, the reliable expert on Sports Economics with Gazzetta della Sport has provided a break up of the gigantic transfer amount paid by Manchester United to Juventus. It would appear that Raiola was owed a fee in the region of €25 million which Juventus paid out of the money they received from Paul Pogba’s transfer.

The intricate details

The transfer of Paul Pogba was always looming in the horizon, an unfortunate reality that Juventus fans knew fully well would come true one day. The day has come, and with it came Mino Raiola’s big, fat pay day. It was reported earlier that in order for Raiola to broker the deal, he was asking for a percentage that would roughly amount to around €25 million.

Laria, instead, says that the €25 million Raiola recieved was not an agent fee, but an amount he received due to the presence of a clause in Pogba’s contract regarding a future sale. In fact, Laria further says that Raiola had recieved his agent fees amounting to €10 million from Manchester United to broker the deal. Raiola made a profit of €35 million from the transfer – the biggest an agent has ever received till date in football.

Pogba’s old club Anciens had also received a small cut of €2 million from the deal.

Thus concluded the biggest transfer in the history of football after Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. Paul Pogba emulates his countryman Zinedine Zidane in leaving Juventus for an outrageous amount of money to seek greener pastures, wealth, glory and fame. In his wake, he leaves grudges, regrets, resentments and a slew of great memories that Juventini will forever cherish.

Barcelona and former Milan director Ariedo Braida believes Paul Pogba was 'not worth' his price-tag, whilst discussing Dani Alves and Miralem Pjanic.

 

The 70-year-old watched the shenanigans between Juventus and Manchester United from the side-lines, but with special attention, as the Blaugrana also had an interest in the Frenchman.

 

“The economics of the operation were a good enough reason not to pursue it,” Braida told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Pogba will show his value in Manchester, as his technical worth is beyond argument. But he'll be criticised at every game if he doesn't perform at his best.

 

“People will see the price-tag and they'll assume he'll win games on his own, and that's not possible. But certain numbers are absurd.

 

“Nobody is worth that much. All of the players are over-valued. When you reach certain levels, the detachment from normality is really too much. We're talking about an operation worth €150m, not counting the salary. The pressure [on Pogba] must be enormous.”

 

Braid also discussed Juventus' new signings, Dani Alves and Miralem Pjanic.

 

“Dani Alves is a champion. He has character, technique, he can handle the ball, he can play alone and for the team. In Barcelona he was beloved, and the feelings were reciprocal, but he wanted to test himself and show he's still at the top. Juve signed a great player.

Andrea Pirlo says Juventus are still laughing at Manchester United for allowing Paul Pogba to leave the club cheaply and join the Turin side back in 2012.

 

The France international moved to the Serie A side for just £800,000, spending four years in Italy before heading back to Manchester United this summer in a world-record £89.5m deal.

 

Pirlo says that while Juventus may have lost their prize asset they are still struggling to believe they managed to land him for such a nominal fee in the first place.

 

“On the first training session Pogba had with Juventus the players were laughing,” he told theTelegraph.

 

“We were not laughing for any other reason than we were just in total disbelief that this player with so much obvious ability was able to leave the club the size of Manchester United for free – and I think Juventus are still laughing.

 

“I will always remember that first day he trained at Juventus. He was only young but we could see he was special.”

 

Despite the massive transfer fee, Pirlo believes that Pogba will be a success at Old Trafford, particularly with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also now at the club.

 

“I think Pogba will make Manchester United a real force again. One player of that quality can change things,” he added.

Andrea Pirlo claims Juventus 'are still laughing' over the revenue they made by signing Paul Pogba and selling him back to Manchester United.

 

The Bianconeri picked up the Frenchman for €1m in 2012 and sold him back this summer for a record-shattering €105m plus bonuses.

 

Although there is some debate over how much exactly the Italians managed to profit from the move, former Juventus star Andrea Pirlo feels the amount is more than enough to gloat over.

 

"On the first day of training session Pogba had with Juventus the players were laughing,” the midfielder is reported as saying by the Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Daily Express.

British media carried quotes from the New York City FC midfielder in which he said the Bianconeri were “still laughing” about taking the Frenchman for free and then selling him back for €105m.

 

However, the veteran has taken to Twitter to clarify the situation, insisting he never made the comments in question.

 

“Just to make it clear, I never gave any interview to the Daily Mail talking about Pogba and Manchester,” Pirlo wrote, accompanied by a picture reading “No BS zone”.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea feels Paul Pogba has "returned home" following his transfer from Juventus.

 

The France international signed a five-year deal this month to complete his £89 million move to Old Trafford, four years after leaving United for Juventus.

 

De Gea is delighted the 24-year-old has returned to Manchester and is adamant Pogba will prove to be a great addition.

 

"I think he is something special. Signing for this club, he played here before and I think he's home," De Gea told MUTV.

 

"He feels like this is his home and we are all really, really happy to have him again in Manchester. He's now with all his friends again in Manchester, with everyone here, and he looks like he never left the club.

 

"He's really good for the team."

 

United also brought in experienced players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and De Gea believes they now have the perfect blend.

 

"I think it's good to have a mix of young players and experienced players," he added.

Juventus could save a considerable amount of cash if they were to allow Paul Pogba to leave the club this summer, as lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League continue to make headlines across Europe.

Pogba cost more per minute last season than Neymar and Messi

 

 

 

Almost exactly a year ago, Paul Pogba suffered his first injury after returning to Juventus, a situation that has cost the club dearly.

 

The 30-year-old Frenchman returned to Turin on a free transfer last summer, signing a four-year deal worth around €8m net per season with €2m in add-ons. The hope was that he could enter the renaissance of his career after a difficult end to life with Manchester United.

 

Things didn’t go to plan. Pogba suffered a knee injury in July last year and the resulting surgery in September kept him out of action until late February.

 

After briefly returning, he suffered a muscle injury, sidelining him for another two months. Three cameo appearances followed before his season came to an end early due to a hamstring issue. ......

 

Considering that the Frenchman only saw 161 minutes of action across 10 total appearances last season, he earnt €49,689 for every minute spent on the pitch.

Paul Pogba has shown dedication by returning for pre-season earlier than his Juventus teammates, aiming to be in better shape and sharper on the field.
