Five Things AC Milan need to do to beat Juventus

On Saturday night, Milan welcome Juventus in what is being billed as a Scudetto deciding match up, the two separated by just a point.

Juve are still unbeaten, but Milan are at home and the defending Champions, setting up a tantalising battle.

In anticipation of the tie, Forza Italian Football have put together five things the Rossoneri should do to beat their title rivals.

1. Take the initiative, play at a higher tempo

When the two sides met last year, the Rossoneri dominated possession, but looked impotent and lacklustre in the final third of the pitch; struggling to impose themselves on the defensively solid Juve side. At the San Siro, Milan must look to take the match to Juve, because suffice to say that the Bianconeri will look to do the same.

Milan will look to dominate play, but when pitted against the best defence in the league, Milan will have to stretch Juve in more ways that than they usually would be able to get away with against lesser opponents.

If Milan are to win the game, then they must braver and more clinical in the final third.

2. Pressure Andrea Pirlo

The former Milan playmaker is the ticking clock of the Juve midfield, he keeps the Bianconeri moving and is arguably one of their few truly world class players. When Pirlo plays, Juve do, the Azzurri lynchpin utterly vital to all Juve’s positive movements. Milan must shut down their former teammate if they are to overcome the Old Lady.

If Pirlo is allowed the time and space to dictate play, then Juve could run rings around Milan, using the regista to recycle possession and keep the away side in control. Milan must either put a midfielder on Pirlo directly, or suffocate his options. If Il Metronomo is allowed to live up to his nickname, then Juve will inevitably seize control, and probably emerge victorious.

3. Target the left flank; it’s still a weak point

Whether it’s Martin Caceres, Giorgio Chiellini, or Paolo De Ceglie, Juventus haven’t really solved the left back problem since the squad shortening days of Calciopoli and the departure of Gianluca Zambrotta in 2006. With a Milan trident of potentially Stephan El Shaarawy, Alexandre Pato and Robinho, Allegri has at his disposal three players that are capable of drifting into wide positions – particularly the left flank and cutting in and beginnig attacks from there.

Whether it’s De Ceglie, a full back with a yet to be proven ability to defend, or Caceres or Giorgio Chiellini, naturally central players, Milan have an outlet in which to utilise their own pace and drive.

4. Play Muntari

After arriving in January as a utility midfield option in light of the continuous Rossoneri injury dilemma, former Inter player Sulley Muntari strolled into Via Turati to a mixed response, many Milan fans felt that it was a step backwards transfer wise, with the club still needing some extra quality in the middle of park, especially when Zlatan Ibrahimovic is absent.

However, the Ghanaian gave a hardworking and impressive performance on his debut, hassling and harrying Cesena’s midfield, picking up loose ends and keeping rhythm with ease. With Milan in all likelihood facing up against the “MVP” midfield trio of Claudio Marchisio, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo, three players with an artful combination of energy, skill and drive, Milan would do well to pick a player of Muntari’s sheer power and physicality, especially if Kevin Prince Boateng is unavailable as predicted.

5. Stop the supply to Matri, and you stop Matri himself.

One of the most in form strikers in Italy, Ale Matri is enjoying his role as the main striker for the unbeaten Bianconeri, scoring 9 goals in 21 appearances and feeding off the service being constantly provided to him. But as his goal record suggests, he is no world class forward, and very much relies on others laying chances to him, rather than dropping deep and creating for himself.

If Milan work dilligently on the wings to suppress the energy of Pepe and guile of Mirko Vucinic, then Matri will be left isolated and ineffective. However, if Juve can work the flanks, with Pirlo pulling in behind as well, then Matri will be a dagerous force playing off the last man. As a result, the experience and expertise of Alessandro Nesta in defence and the ethic of Mesbah on the left flank could be a worthwhile selection from Massimilano Allegri. If the service is suffocated, so will Matri, and Juve’s chief attacking threat.

The most anticipated match of the fantastic league of Serie A has approached, it’s that time again, when the giants of Calcio step on Giuseppe Meazza for the third time this season, to face each other in what is considered by many as the encounter that will decide the Scudetto of 2011/2012.

Though the Derby d’Italia coined by the famous sports journalist Gianni Brera involves Inter and Juventus as one of the most intense matches in Italy, AC Milan and Juventus this time around, should be named to “The Real Derby d’Italia” for all their fierce but “fair” rivalry, for being one of the most famous derby the world of football has ever experienced and for the spectacle given in the league which makes Serie A even more interesting as years pass by.

Juventus a much rejuvenated side under their Mister Antonio Conte, visit San Siro as self proclaimed underdogs, but at Via Turati/Milanello the environment seems to be just about the same. Both teams are cast in the same mold – equally favorites in the derby, and for all we know, a spectacle is a guarantee.

Forza Italian Football, toiled over the “the real derby d’Italia” with five key instructions both teams need to do to beat each other. As a matter of fact, Juventus have beaten AC Milan twice this season, once in the league and once in the Coppa Italia and they would definitely like to go one better by reaching a new record of wins against the Rossoneri.

1.Let Pirlo Know Pressure is off him

One could not argue about Pirlo’s performance against AC Milan in Coppa Italia but just because he is playing against his former team, one could expect from him to give 110% that night. As emotional as he gets when he plays against AC Milan, Juventus need him to be on his peak in order to defeat the Italian Scudetto holders. Moreover, Andrea himself admitted that he is prepared for an emotional return to the stadium where he spent 10 years of success. “I’ll inevitably feel particular emotions,” he told Juventus’ website.

Antonio Conte should make sure pressure is off Andrea, and that he steps on the pitch with the right attitude to astound the world with everything he does. On another note, the World Cup 2006 winner is an experienced player overall, he will be the key to Juventus’ success in San Siro given the fact that Andrea knows so much about AC Milan that he might as well teach Conte a lesson or two as regards to them.

2.Take Advantage of Allegri’s Rigid Style of Play

Massimiliano Allegri has kept adopting a 4-3-1-2 formation and even though it not always resulted in a success, he didn’t change it, not even a bit. His tactics are very rigid, a style of play which is direct, something which we could expect for the Juventus tactician to take advantage of.

Allegri, very much looking as a coach who is not worried about having a certain plan B, if plan A does not go through. We’ve seen it against teams who rely on width with players who could do very well on the wings and this Juventus team could be it. A 3-5-2 formation could prove to be decisive against Allegri’s men by seizing the opportunity to beat them in center midfield, while the full backs in the position of a wide midfielder keep doing the duty of an attacking winger.

Stephan Lichtsteiner is superior to any of Djamel Mesbah or Antonini (the favorites to start on left back for AC Milan), thus Allegri could as well think of a tactic to return the favor to this form of Juventus attack.

Both Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri have faced each other two times this season, once in Serie A, a match which by any means was fully dominated by Juventus, and in Coppa Italia which saw Conte teach Allegri the same lesson, twice. This will not be the last time they encounter each other, as a Coppa Italia 2^nd leg is pending, however, exploiting each other’s weaknesses will see one of them triumph in the much important game of Serie A.

3. Press on their Midfield

AC Milan have one of the oldest midfield in Serie A, with players that despite being old, lack certain energy, motivation and drive as compared to those of Juventus. Juve should, however, not underestimate their power and will, because in a derby like this, their midfielders have the experience that is needed to beat pressure away.

Antonio Conte has taught his boys to play a short passing game with lots of possession in every match so far which could be vital to the style of play against Milan. Massimiliano Allegri will most likely start with Van Bommel-Nocerino-Muntari in midfield, which in any way is inferior to Juventus’ “MVP midfield”, Marchisio, Vidal, Pirlo.

Short passes and hassling of their midfield, would make sure Juventus have hit AC Milan at the “Achilles heel” and it will undoubtedly paralyze their chances to beat this very confident undefeated Juventus.

4. Take Advantage of Injuries

If AC Milan are having troubles with injuries this season, Juventus had to deal with the same problem last year, but now they seem to cancel each other out. One team could very much struggle in situation of many injuries, and instead of the coach being torn between two great players to pick to play, he will unfortunately have to accept the luck and get the best out of his second or third choices.

Massimiliano Allegri has managed to hold things under control and team looks compact even after many unfortunate injuries, so Antonio Conte will have to sit up and take notice. However, we could be sure that Conte could as well use these injuries to his team’s advantage and he’ll stop at nothing.

On another important note, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s absence because of the three match ban could be a blessing in disguise for Juventus, though many others would assume that AC Milan are a stronger side without him. However, for all we know, Allegri will be down on his luck and he should be cautious. Better be safe, than sorry.

5. Unleash Martin “El Pelado” Caceres

Last, but by no means least, if things don’t go as planned for the Bianconeri, Antonio Conte would do well to give a free rein to his January signing Martin Caceres, the hero of the Semi Final Coppa Italia first leg played in San Siro, where he scored the first and the second stunning-winning goal for Juventus.

If needs be, the coach will have to re-introduce the person they have already been introduced to, but this time, hopefully, there will be no excuses like – “It was only a Coppa game”. A loss would most probably boost tension in the city of Milan.

It’s a Scudetto showdown at San Siro on Saturday night, as Juventus travel to Milan hoping to leapfrog the Rossoneri at the top of the table. According to reports Massimiliano Allegri should have Philippe Mexes, Massimo Ambrosini, Alexandre Pato and Alessandro Nesta at his disposal after recovering from injury. Milan are without their talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic after their appeal over his ban was rejected, Kevin-Prince Boateng is definitely ruled out with injury. The influential star joins a long list of injured team-mates, including the likes of Antonio Cassano, Alberto Aquilani and Clarence Seedorf.

Stat: Milan have lost just one of their last twenty-one home league games.

Juventus’ last visit to San Siro ended in a 2-1 victory in their Coppa Italia semi-final first leg meeting, but Antonio Conte will be well prepared for this decisive clash. It is reported Conte will continue with his 3-5-2 formation, while Fabio Quagliarella, Arturo Vidal and Stephan Lichtsteiner are all expected to start. The Bianconeri have a game in hand over their title rivals, and know a win here and away at Bologna could see them move five points clear. Conte’s only injury worry is Luca Marrone who is ruled out, while his side have been defensively imperious away from home in recent weeks, keeping four consecutive clean sheets.

Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo admits he will have to put emotions to one side when he faces former club AC Milan on Saturday.

The Italy international will return to the San Siro for the first time since leaving the Rossoneri outfit last summer to join Juve.

"It's going to be a very special game for me," said Pirlo, who played 10 seasons at AC Milan.

"I will feel different emotions but my focus will be on helping Juventus."

Pirlo scored his first league goal for the Turin giants in last weekend's 3-1 victory over Catania.

The result kept Juventus as the only unbeaten team in Italy and left Antonio Conte's side one point behind Serie A leaders AC Milan, although the Bianconeri have a game in hand.

Milan will again be without the team's leading scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic, who has netted 15 league goals so far, saw his appeal to overturn his third and final match ban denied this week.

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini does not think Ibrahimovic's absence will hinder the Rossoneri.

"Milan are still favourites even without Ibrahimovic," he said. "His absence doesn't change anything.

"They have other talented players and they have proved they can win without him."

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri would have welcomed Ibrahimovic's availability considering strikers Kevin-Prince Boateng and Maxi Lopez are sidelined through injury.

"A champion like Ibrahimovic is always good to have on the pitch," Allegri said. "But we accept the decision by the Italian football league.

"Against Juventus we need to try to win even without Ibrahimovic.

"This is an important game in view of the standings. Whoever wins will boost their scudetto chances."

Brazilian forward Alexandre Pato is expected to partner Robinho in Milan's attack.

Milan have lost just once at home this season and go into the contest on the back of last weekend's 3-1 triumph at Cesena.

There's one conundrum which holds the key to Saturday night's big season defining Serie A game, and that's whether you think that Milan are capable of testing Juventus without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

If you watched Milan dismantle Arsenal in the Champions League, then you'll think that Zlatan's presence is absolutely vital for Milan, but there are those in Italy who would argue otherwise and tell you that he only shows up against the smaller teams, and that his influence on big and decisive matches is minimal. It's not only Champions League pundits in England who veer towards Zlatan-scepticism.

The fact remains, though, that Ibra has scored 15 Serie A goals this season, and Juve's four strikers have a combined total of 14. That illustrates what a big hole that he leaves, and with Robinho and Pato set to lead the line without a huge amount of creativity behind them, Milan may struggle to break down a defence which has conceded just 14 goals this season and just six away from home.

The market favours the home side, and I'm surprised to see Milan as short as 2.42 for the win, with Juve available to back at 3.4.

Juve may have struggled lately, looking less than cohesive in 0-0 draws against Siena and Parma, and then labouring a little against Catania, but they have the edge against the big teams, and certainly do against Milan. Juve have twice beaten the Rossoneri this season, and I think that, for all of their recent issues, Antonio Conte's men are simply the better group of players, particularly if you take Ibrahimovic and possibly injury doubt Kevin-Prince Boateng out of the equation as well.

I can see them stifling a sometimes stultifying Milan and winning a low-scoring game by a narrow margin. They're certainly too big at the prices. The Overs/Unders market looks about right, with Under 2.5 Goals rightly the favourite at 1.76. .

The other market that interests me is the Correct Score one. I feel that Milan will struggle to score, and so the Juventus low-scoring win is a good way to back up a bet on them in the win market. I'll take 1-0 to Conte's side at 11.0. .

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has hailed Andrea Pirlo's impact on the team.

The 32-year-old midfielder signed for Juve in the summer after a decade at AC Milan and has played a leading role in the club's rise of form as they trail the Rossoneri in second place by just one point.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will miss Saturday's match against Juventus through suspension, is Milan's top Serie A scorer with 15 goals, but Buffon had special words of praise for his team-mate.

"Pirlo has been more decisive than Ibrahimovic this season," Buffon told La Stampa. "Ibra has certainly kept his incisiveness, helping Milan to keep the same level from last season.

"Pirlo has balanced the gap between Milan and Juventus.

"Was Pirlo a gift from Milan? I do not think so. He wanted to come here and seize a new challenge."

The Italy international then admitted that he is thrilled to see Juventus challenging for the Scudetto again after the club's disappointing results in recent seasons.

"It is really satisfying, although this season has been a bit different: Inter have struggled and Napoli have the Champions League handicap, which has narrowed down the Scudetto race to Milan and Juventus.

"But it is a big surprise, because at the beginning no one thought this could happen.

"This is good for Serie A, otherwise Milan would win it hands down."

The 34-year-old keeper then stated that he does not believed that the outcome of Saturday's match will determine the Serie A champion.

"It is too soon," Buffon noted. "If we win, I do not think we will be closer to the Scudetto.

"And the same thing can be said about Milan, if we lose."

Pato back for Milan-Juve clash

Brazil forward Alexandre Pato will return to AC Milan's team for Saturday's home game against Juventus after being rested for last weekend's win over Cesena, coach Massimiliano Allegri told reporters.

Milan and Juventus are locked in a tussle for the Serie A crown with the former one point clear of their rivals who have a game in hand.

"It's not yet a decisive game but a win for either team would change the balance of the championship," Allegri said on Friday. "We just have to try and get the best result we can."

Juventus manager Antonio Conte said his team could benefit from the suspension being served by Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede, who has scored 15 Serie A goals this season, was banned for three matches after slapping a Napoli player earlier this month.

"Ibra shifts the balance in favour of the team he plays for but our attitude won't change regardless of who we're playing," Conte told reporters.

Marchisio dismisses comparisons with Tardelli and Gerrard

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has moved to distance himself from comparisons with Marco Tardelli and Steven Gerrard, insisting that he is his own man.

The Italy international has played a key role in the Bianconeri's resurgence this season, netting six goals in 22 appearances in Serie A.

Marchisio has been labelled 'the new Tardelli' by many pundits, while others feel that Liverpool's all-action skipper Steven Gerrard is his English equivalent.

The man himself, though, is reluctant to be drawn on which players he resembles, telling Corriere dello Sport: "I'm Marchisio, [though] we all learned from someone."

The 26-year-old Turin native is hoping to put everything he has picked up during his career to date to good use in Saturday night's top-of-the-table clash with AC Milan at San Siro.

The Bianconeri remain undefeated this season, and are just a point behind the Rossoneri with a game in hand, but Marchisio insists that Antonio Conte's men go into the game as underdogs.

"Without wanting to talk ourselves down, we are not going to Milan at a good time," he argued.

"They are in first place and have practically sealed their place in the next round of the Champions League - they are the favourites.

"They have the Scudetto badge on their chests. They close matches out with greater ease than us because they have more experience."

Milan will be without talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic through suspension but Marchisio believes that the Swede's absence does not make Juve's task any easier.

"Ibrahimovic is a great champion, but whether he is there or not does not change anything," he claimed.

"It's a problem for Allegri but it's not as if we can relax without him [on the field]."

The Bianconeri captain should know, as he has featured in this stadium many times and goes into the Saturday evening Scudetto showdown.

“Playing at San Siro is an honour and a privilege,” read Del Piero’s official blog.

“When you step on to the San Siro pitch for the first time, you understand that maybe you’ve really made it.

“At San Siro the world is seen better upside down, or should I say overhead (like on May 8 2005).

Giorgio Chiellini has declared that Juventus plan to take the game to AC Milan during Saturday night's eagerly-awaited Serie A showdown at San Siro.

The versatile Italy defender is wary of the threat posed by the Rossoneri - even without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, while a draw would be a positive result for the visitors, given that they are just one point behind their rivals at the top of the table with a game in hand, Chiellini insists that the Bianconeri have no intention of going to the Giuseppe Meazza and inviting their hosts onto them, and instead plan to impose their own game on the reigning Italian champions.

"Milan are coming off the back of a winning year and they’re showing that they’re one of the strongest teams in Europe," the 27-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.

"So there’s plenty of respect for the Rossoneri, but also a great desire to go there and dictate the game.”

Some pundits believe that the outcome of Saturday night's clash at San Siro could effectively decide the title race, but Chiellini is not attaching that level of significance to the game.

"It’s not like the Milan-Juve clash in 2005 when I believe there were three or four matches left and you felt that it would be the decisive game," he argued.

"In my opinion, whatever the result, there’s still a long way to go and anything could still happen.”

Calcio's two most storied cornerstones battle it out this evening in the biggest domestic football match of 2012, as AC Milan and Juventus clash in a fixture which could well provide a huge turning point in the Serie A title race.

The Rossoneri currently sit one point ahead of their visitors, who will travel down the A4 safe in the knowledge that no team has yet managed to send them home empty-handed since Parma beat them 2-0 nine months ago.

Their 27-match unbeaten run in all competitions has helped to put them in with a great chance of winning a first official title since 2003, but they face their toughest assignment of this campaign at San Siro this evening.

So what will be the deciding factors when the first and second-placed teams go head to head at 20.45CET? We've picked out the five most important hurdles which the two sides will have to overcome in order to win the points and take a huge step in the title battle.

A FAST START

One thing which has defined the two clashes between the pair so far this term has been Juventus' superiority from the early moments.

At Juventus Stadium in October, the Bianconeri dominated from the word go, despite eventually having to wait until the dying moments to beat Christian Abbiati. Earlier this month in the Coppa Italia semi final first leg at San Siro, the same pattern was followed in the first half, as Antonio Conte's men were quickest out of the traps, imposing their game on Milan from the start.

If the Rossoneri are going to reverse the trend and pick up the three points this time around, it is imperative that they don't let Juventus get comfortable, with a high-tempo, energetic opening similar to the one that they demonstrated at Cesena last Sunday surely the best way of giving them something to think about. An early strike from the returning Alexandre Pato, as was witnessed when the Rossoneri visited Barcelona in September, wouldn't go amiss either!

MIDFIELD SUPREMACY

It is in the centre of the park that Juventus have done most of the damage in their magnificent unbeaten run, and Milan have twice paid for not forcing the issue in that department in their clashes with the Old Lady this term.

In the first league fixture, it was Clarence Seedorf, Mark van Bommel and Antonio Nocerino who lost out to the home side's central three, while Seedorf, Van Bommel and Massimo Ambrosini were given the run-around in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

Juve's more dynamic midfield game will likely give them the upper hand once more, unless Milan can match them for energy - which may prove difficult with Kevin-Prince Boateng absent. Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio have not always been at the top of their form in recent weeks, so they must be asked questions in the midfield battle, and to do that the hosts will need fresh legs in their trio. But then there's always the question of ...

ANDREA PIRLO

The Italy maestro returns to San Siro for a third time in a Juventus shirt since his summer switch from the league champions, but this time around it is infinitely more vital.

With a win in the Coppa Italia and a defeat in the Trofeo Berlusconi, Pirlo has experienced mixed emotions so far in his meetings with his former friends and colleagues, but tonight's outcome will have a real say in just how crucial his loss will turn out to be to Milan.

Massimiliano Allegri, like so many Serie A coaches this season, has not yet proven capable of finding a way to remedy the ills which Pirlo can cause an opposition side, with the ex-Brescia man having helped the Bianconeri to remain in control for long spells of the two encounters before now. Ensuring that there is a gameplan to keep a tight leash on his former charge will be the Rossoneri coach's biggest task tonight. Oh, how he could do with Gennaro Gattuso fit and available.

TAKING YOUR CHANCES

One of Juventus' main issues this term has been their profligacy in front of goal. They lead the league in terms of goalscoring chances created, yet their finishing percentages are very disappointing.

Their problems up front have been much of the reason for the high number of draws racked up (12 of the 27 fixtures in their unbeaten run have finished level after 90 minutes), and becoming more clinical in front of goal is, without a doubt, Conte's biggest concern.

But Milan also have the small problem of trying to penetrate without their star attacker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede's three-game suspension was upheld after his appeal on Thursday failed. Ibra has scored 15 Serie A goals this season - Milan's next top-scorer in attack is Robinho with just four goals.

SMART SUBSTITUTIONS

What can be taken for granted about tonight's game is that there will be moments of real to-and-fro, with the momentum swinging one way and then the other at various stages.

And one thing that will become crucial in the latter period of the game is the input of the two coaches. Many Milan fans have previously questioned whether Allegri is capable of making significant tactical changes to his side with his substitutions, claiming that he has no Plan B in his locker, while Conte doesn't have the greatest success rate when attempting to chase three points in the dying moments.

If the game is on a knife-edge towards the end at San Siro, it will fall on the two bosses to reveal their hand. And they will have to make their changes knowing that, with each decision, they will not only be affecting their bid for three points, but also going a long way to deciding which of the two will be lifting the Scudetto come May. Pavel Nedved is adamant that referees have been conditioned to go against Juventus ever since 'Calciopoli'.

The Bianconeri were relegated to Serie B and stripped of two titles because of their involvement in the scandal, which centred on former managing director Luciano Moggi's alleged attempts to influence the performance of match officials, as well as their appointment for certain games.

Nedved, now a director at the club, believes that Juve are still paying the price for their involvement in 'Calciopoli' and is in total agreement with coach Antonio Conte, who recently claimed that referees have been afraid to award his side penalties this season.

"We do not want favours but we expect fair treatment," the 39-year-old Czech legend told Sky Sport Italia.

"It's a fact that they are conditioned against us. After 2006 we have been given very few penalties in our favour."

Turning his attention to Saturday night's eagerly-awaited clash between second-placed Juve and league leaders AC Milan, Nedved insisted that he is disappointed that the Rossoneri will be without their talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic through suspension.

"I'm sorry for his absence; he's a loss to the game," the former Ballon d'Or winner admitted. "With him on the pitch, the people would certainly have enjoyed the match even more."

Alberto Aquilani is adamant that AC Milan are a superior side to Juventus - but he acknowledges that Massimiliano Allegri's men must prove it at San Siro on Saturday night.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan to the Bianconeri from Liverpool, has enormous respect for the Turin outfit but he is confident that the Rossoneri will prevail in the eagerly-awaited top-of-the-table clash at the Giuseppe Meazza.

"I think that Milan are stronger than Juventus, but they must prove it on the field," Aquilani, who is currently out of action with an ankle problem, is quoted as saying by giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

"I envy Juventus' unbeaten record and [midfielder Claudio] Marchisio, who is a very strong player.

"Juventus have invested so much and have returned to the top. And [coach Antonio] Conte has given great organisation to the team.

"However, I remain of the view that it is players who make the difference."

AC Milan's Massimo Ambrosini does not believe that Saturday night's clash with Juventus will decide the title but accepts that the victors will come away from the top-of-the-table clash with a huge psychological advantage over their rivals.

The Rossoneri currently sit one point above the Bianconeri in the standings, but Antonio Conte's men have one game in hand.

Ambrosini is unwilling to attach too much importance to the pair's eagerly-awaited meeting at San Siro but the veteran midfielder concedes that it will have a massive bearing on where the Scudetto ends up this season.

"It's an important game in terms of the table, but I don't think it will be decisive in terms of the title because there are many games left to play," the Rossoneri skipper told Milan Channel.

"Of course, the team that wins will have a psychological advantage but we must face Juventus head-on because teams like Juve must be confronted without fear."

Milan are still on a high at the moment after last week's 4-0 Champions League victory over Arsenal but Ambrosini feels that the club's exploits in Europe will ultimately prove a hindrance when it comes to trying to hold onto their league crown.

AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso believes that Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo is a rare footballing talent.

Pirlo parted company with the Rossoneri last summer before joining the Bianconeri on a free transfer and has since gone on to play a key role in the Turin outfit's resurgence under new coach Antonio Conte.

Gattuso insists that he is not in the least bit surprised by his former team-mate's performances for Juve, hinting that the deep-lying midfielder should never have been allowed to leave San Siro.

"Pirlo has been and is a great player," the former Italy international told Il Corriere dello Sport. "He is still showing it. There are not many champions of his calibre."

Gattuso's skipper, Massimo Ambrosini, also admitted that Pirlo is still missed at Milanello.

"Pirlo carried a certain weight in the dressing room in terms of decision-making and spirit," the veteran midfielder revealed. "He's a champion who will remain forever in our hearts."

Former AC Milan forward Marco van Basten has revealed that he would have no problem coaching Juventus if the opportunity arose at some point in the future.

The legendary Dutch striker, who is set to take charge of Heerenveen at the end of the season, is considered a legend at San Siro because of his exploits with the Rossoneri during the tail end of the 1980s and the early 90s.

However, Van Basten insists that he would not allow Milan's rivalry with Juve affect his thinking if the Bianconeri ever offered him a job.

"They're one of Italy's big clubs," he told Sky Sport Italia. "It could be nice to do something in Turin one day."

Van Basten admitted, though, that he would love to return to San Siro as coach and revealed that he very nearly realised his dream in 2009.

"When [Carlo] Ancelotti was about to leave there was something," he explained. "But in that moment, I had problems with my ankle, so it was not the right time for me to go back to the Rossoneri."

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani believes that the club have found a worthy successor to Van Basten in the former of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Van Basten, for his part, does not see too many similarities between the pair but insisted: "It doesn't bother me at all to be compared Ibrahimovic [but] we are still two very different players.

"He is one who knows how to score goals; he's very important for the team. He's bigger and stronger than me; I was a quicker player mentally.

"But it's not for me to say if I was a better player. I'll leave the comparisons to the fans."

Van Basten, who was capped 58 times by his country, spent eight years at San Siro, scoring 90 goals in 147 Serie A appearances for the club.

The 43-year-old has been previously linked to a move back to the Rossoneri as part of the club's coaching staff, but the legendary Italian has poured cold water on a potential return to San Siro.

"I don't think I'll go back to Milan. I am seen as a problem because I have an independent mind. The club's choices are perfectly legitimate, but let us avoid hypocrisy. They said 'he's one of us and is always welcome,' but that's not the truth," Maldini told Corriere dello Sport.

The Serie A champions head into the encounter a point clear of Antonio Conte's men at the summit of Italy's top division and Maldini was happy to take a dig at Milan's Turin rivals.

"As for Juventus, they need to stay calm as whining about every half-shout for a penalty isn't the kind of thing a big club does," he added.

Antonio Conte was a midfielder when Moggi was at the helm of Juventus and has now become a very successful Coach who is still unbeaten this season.

“As a player he had already shown signs of potentially being a good Coach. After all, he won two Serie B tournaments as a tactician and always showed he could bring something to the players.

“Besides which, he has the Juventus DNA and knows off by heart what we repeated every day – that you can make up for any lack in quality with mentality.

“Are there any comparisons with my Juventus? My side was a bit better! Don’t forget the 2006 World Cup Final looked like a Juve training session with the number of our players out there for Italy and France.

Slotting into an attacking midfield role against Cesena, the Dutchman looked right at home dribbling past opposing defenders and taking powerful shots from distance - Milan need a repeat performance from him as with Boateng, Ibrahimovic, Seedorf and Antonio Cassano missing in action their creative resources are somewhat depleted.

Andrea Pirlo

The deep-lying playmaker grabbed his first goal in a Juventus strip and arguably had his best game yet for his new team in what has been a stellar season thus far for the Italy international. Going up against the team he spent a decade with, he will no doubt be eager to show them he still is capable of deciding big matches like this one.

Prediction

Despite Juve's recent success at San Siro in the Coppa Italia, Allegri's side have looked reborn since that setback and seem to be the more hungry side at the moment, even overtaking their opponents in the standings recently. Without Ibrahimovic, someone will have to step up in attack, and if that happens then the Rossoneri should be able to edge what promises to be a very close contest.

Capello can't wait for Milan-Juve

Former England manager Fabio Capello is in the stands at San Siro for tonight’s Milan-Juventus. “I’d say it’s going to be a wonderful match.”

The tactician resigned from the England job and is currently on vacation, but took time out to visit the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“I’d say it’s going to be a wonderful match,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

“It will be very interesting to see the aggressive Juventus play against Milan’s extra quality. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an important player and Milan’s style is based on him, so it will be intriguing to see how the Rossoneri attack moves without him.

“It’s also going to be interesting seeing how the Bianconeri move up front.”

Capello was asked about his own future, as he has been linked with the likes of Inter.

“I am watching games only from the stands at the moment, then we’ll see what happens in future. They just let me free and I am enjoying this liberty.

“A future as a director? I don’t think it’s my role.”
