Giorgio Chiellini wary of threat posed by Sebastian Giovinco

The Italy international believes that the Bianconeri will have to pay special attention

to the Gialloblu's influential playmaker, who only left Turin last year.

Jan 30, 2012

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini is very wary of the threat posed by former team-mate Sebastian Giovinco ahead of Tuesday night's Serie A clash with Parma.

The Bianconeri will arrive at the Ennio Tardini full of confidence on the back of their hard-fought victory over third-placed Udinese on Saturday night, but the Italy international knows that their title challenge could be derailed by the Gialloblu playmaker, who only left Turin last year.

“Parma are a great team at home,” Chiellini told his club's official website. “Giovinco is the star and we know him well.

"It will be important to be able to regain our energy levels, because we’re playing every three days and this will continue until the [Coppa Italia] clash with AC Milan.”

Chiellini admitted, though, that confidence within the club is sky high at the moment, admitting that even the players have been taken aback by the way in which they have gone from also-rans for the past two seasons to Scudetto contenders under the guidance of new coach Antonio Conte.

"We’re performing beyond the best possible expectations," the makeshift left-back enthused.

"We were convinced that we’d be able to enjoy a great season, but we were also coming off the back of two difficult years and a lot changed in the summer.

"We’ve done well to find an immediate balance and an identity of playing. Now we’re continuing to develop.

"It’s a process that hasn’t stopped yet and must continue if we want to be able to achieve a dream."

Juve go into the midweek round of games one point clear of Milan, who travel to Rome to face Lazio on Wednesday night.

Donadoni wants positive Parma

Jan 30, 2012

Roberto Donadoni is eagerly anticipating the visit of table-topping Juventus on Tuesday night and warns his players not to be afraid.

Parma won three consecutive League meetings against the Bianconeri before last September’s 4-1 defeat and Donadoni is keen that the players’ mentality is correct for the return fixture.

“We must not only limit the opponents, we must effectively hurt Juventus by playing our own game,” he told the Press on Monday.

“We will only get trouble throughout the game if we are at the mercy of our opponents. It is one thing I do not like.

“We know what we have to do. I want the guys to just interpret the game, with great care and great determination.

“The evening will be special, it will be fun to play this game. I would like to play every week at this level because it gives you great enthusiasm and stimulus.”

Despite the appointment of former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni in the hotseat, not much has changed for Parma, who remain an unpredictable opponent in Serie A. The Gialloblu are expected to make two changes from the 1-1 draw with Catania, as Goncalo Brandao is set to be replaced by Cristian Zaccardo in defence, while Massimo Gobbi should come into the side in favour of Francesco Modesto.

Meanwhile for Juventus, two changes should see Claudio Marchisio rewarded for his assist off the substitute's bench in the 2-1 win against Udinese during the weekend with a place in the XI, at the expense of Emanuele Giaccherini. Also, Simone Pepe is to replace Stephan Lichtsteiner, as a 3-5-2 formation also looks set to be retained, with Antonio Conte reportedly pleased at how the system worked against the Zebrette.

DID YOU KNOW?

•This will be the 40th meeting between these two sides in Serie A - Parma have won only nine; in stark contrast to Juventus' total of 17 victories.

•The Ducali are unbeaten in their last six home games, with three goals scored in their last three.

•Sebastian Giovinco has scored four goals in his last three games against his former team Juventus - his most prolific opponent.

•Juventus remain the only side still unbeaten amongst the 'top five' European leagues and boast Serie A's best defence.

•Andrea Pirlo has scored six goals against Parma -the team he has netted the most against in his career.

•The Bianconeri won the first meeting between these two teams 4-1 earlier in the season.

MATCH PREVIEW

Jan 31, 2012

Juventus began the campaign with a 4-1 win over Parma – but today’s Old Lady are a different beast to the one we saw in September.

Back then new boss Antonio Conte was seen as a 4-4-2 man who might struggle to incorporate Andrea Pirlo into his team. Now, five months later, Pirlo is the inspiration behind a side which has used a 4-5-1, 4-1-4-1, 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 with some success. Hence why the Old Lady are still unbeaten and sit top of the table, a point clear of closest rivals Milan.

The Bianconeri will go into Tuesday’s game fresh from a 2-1 triumph over Udinese in a snowy Turin. There may be similar conditions at the Tardini in midweek, but there could also be changes to the starting XI.

Stephan Lichtsteiner and Arturo Vidal are doubts after their tired performances on Saturday, even if the right-back may be the only one of the two rested. Simone Pepe and Claudio Marchisio should be returned to the starting XI after coming off the bench against the Udine outfit. Mirko Vucinic is still injured. Marco Borriello could replace Fabio Quagliarella in attack.

Parma boss Roberto Donadoni, meanwhile, has just a worry over Graziano Pelle in terms of fitness. His bigger concern will be results – even if the Gialloblu do sit comfortably in mid-table on 24 points and eight clear of any danger.

The Tardini outfit, after going so long at the start of the season without a draw, are becoming one-point specialists. They have drawn six of their last eight games, with a 5-0 loss at Inter and 3-1 win over Siena amongst those matches. They drew 1-1 with Catania at the weekend.

Historically speaking, this tie at the Tardini is tight with six Parma wins, eight draws and five Juve victories. Parma have netted 22 goals to the Old Lady’s 21.

Keep an eye on: Sebastian Giovinco (Parma) – He has to be the one to watch. Part-owned by both clubs, the attacker felt he was under-used in Turin and has wasted no opportunity to prove his point. In the last three games against the Old Lady for Parma, he has scored four goals.

Last time in Serie A: Parma 1-0 Juventus – That defeat in May was the last time Juventus lost a competitive game.

Form guide: Parma (D L W D D) Juventus (D W D W W)

Stat fact: Juventus have not kept a clean sheet at Parma in Serie A since a 0-0 draw back in April 2001. In fact, Juve have shut out the Gialloblu on just two occasions in 19 League games there.

Parma (probable): Mirante; Paletta, Lucarelli, Zaccardo; Valiani, Galloppa, Morrone, Modesto; Biabiany, Floccari, Giovinco

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Pepe, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Estigarribia; Matri, Quagliarella

Match Preview

Serie A league leaders Juventus will be looking to extend their impressive 20-game

unbeaten run when they travel to the Stadio Ennio Tardini to take on Parma on Tuesday.

Jan 31, 2012

La Vecchia Signora have been in unstoppable form in recent weeks and are the odds on favourites to further extend their lead at the league summit against Roberto Donadoni's inconsistent side.

Juventus are well aware of the fact that more than ever now every team they face will fight their hearts out to be the first to inflict defeat upon them this season.

Parma are likely to be stiff opposition, as since their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro in early January they have gone unbeaten in three successive league games, with a 3-1 home victory over Siena and two away draws against Bologna and Catania, respectively.

Furthermore, their home record is quite impressive, with five wins, three draws and a mere two losses in ten games. But in order for Parma to obtain a positive result, much depends on the form of former Juve striker Sebastian Giovinco.

The diminutive 25-year-old has scored four goals in his last three games against his former club and will be hoping to convert once again in order to boost his teams chances of causing an upset.

"Giovinco is the star and we know him well," Giorgio Chiellini, the wary Juve defender, stated in reference to the talented striker, who incidentally scored Parma's only goal in the 4-1 defeat to Juventus in September.

But despite what Parma have to offer, if Juventus stick to their normal game plan they should prove too difficult to crack. Antonio Conte has assembled a formidable unit that arrive at the Ennio Tardini full of confidence.

Another factor that will highly motivate Juventus coming into the clash is that if they manage to return home with the three points and Milan are beaten by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday, the Bianconeri will open a four-point cushion over their nearest rivals.

If a full-strength Juventus reproduce anything near to the fighting spirit that they demonstrated in their hard-fought 2-1 win over Udinese on Saturday, they should rack up another three points against Parma.

Juventus' clash with Parma called off

due to extreme weather conditions

After a prolonged period of snow, the officials have taken the decision

to postpone the Serie A meeting in concern of the supporter's safety..

Jan 31, 2012

Juventus' Serie A trip to Parma has been called off due to extreme weather conditions, just 45 minutes before the two sides were scheduled to kick off.

The two sides were set to get underway at 20.45CET, but prolonged snow-fall has prompted officials to postpone the match.

Sky Italia reports that Juventus were eager to see the clash called off as 2000 of their fans were left stranded en route to Stadio Ennio Tardini.

However, Parma wanted to play the match at its scheduled kick-off time, but the decision was eventually taken due to concerns over supporter safety.

Antonio Conte's men triumphed 4-1 when the two sides met in September in the first Serie A match at the Juventus Stadium.

Parma-Juventus snowed off

c3media1414183immaginet.jpg

Jan 31, 2012

Tonight’s League match between Parma and table-topping Juventus has been called off late in the evening due to adverse weather conditions.

With heavy snowfall having hit the Emilia-Romagna region from late afternoon, a decision on whether to go ahead with the game at the Stadio Ennio Tardini was left until the latest hour.

However, it has now been confirmed as postponed after Gos, the Security Operations Group deemed the stadium unsafe to host the match.

There is no immediate date set for the rearrangement of the fixture.

Marotta makes stadium plea

c3media1414211immaginet.jpg

Feb 1, 2012

Last night’s postponed game between Parma and Juventus was another example why the country needs new stadiums, says Beppe Marotta.

The Bianconeri official made that claim after the safety organisation which looks after the Stadio Tardini called off the game due to the snow and freezing temperatures.

“With all due respect to Parma FC and the city itself, you can’t accommodate evening matches in winter months at out-dated structures,” he argued.

“We’ve built a ground capable of dealing with public order problems and viability, but Italian stadiums are considered to be the lowest quality in Europe and this is a negative trend that needs to be overcome.

“If you want to put on a top level spectacle, structure and adequate planning are required.”

There were fears yesterday morning that the tie would not go ahead and Marotta was not surprised with the decision which was eventually taken last night.

“It was foreseeable that this game would not have been able to go ahead,” continued the former Sampdoria official.

“The pitch was completely covered and the safety of the spectators must always be guaranteed.

“If you factor in the road conditions, which would have restricted the operation of any emergency services, it’s clear that the right decision has been made.”

There is talk this morning that the game could now be rescheduled for Wednesday 7 March.

“I call on the will of Parma and the League. Unfortunately neither Parma or Juventus have European commitments so we’ll find an adequate date.”

Furious Conte expected postponement

c3media1414178immaginet.jpg

Feb 1, 2012

Juventus boss Antonio Conte was left fuming after Tuesday’s Serie A game at Parma was called off.

The Serie A tie was postponed close to kick-off given the snowy and freezing conditions at the Stadio Tardini.

“Something more could have been done,” the former Bianconeri midfielder told Sky Sport Italia. “We could have played at three in the afternoon.

“There is 10cms of snow and with the instruments that we have available to us we knew three days ago that the weather would be like this.

“We can play under the snow at our stadium because it allows us to. Here, at the Tardini, it is impossible.

“How would we have been able to play? What sort of spectacle would we have put on for the fans?

“In coming down to Parma on the coach and returning, we would have spent 10-15 hours on a bus…”

Antonio Conte: Postponed match against Parma

should have been played at 3pm

The coach of the Turin giants feels that the game could have gone ahead

as planned if it had been moved to the afternoon, despite adverse weather conditions.

c3media1414179immaginet.jpg

Feb 1, 2012

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has voiced his frustration with the decision to cancel Tuesday's Serie A encounter against Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

The league match was called off due to extreme weather conditions, but the 42-year-old tactician feels that the heavy snowfall should have been anticipated, and that the game could have gone ahead as planned had it been moved to the afternoon.

"There's 10 centimetres of snow, but we could already have known that the weather would be like this about three days ago thanks to the modern instruments," Conte was quoted as saying by Il Corriere dello Sport.

"Something should have been done. The match could have gone ahead if it had been moved to three in the afternoon."

Conte's men are currently top of Serie A, but will relinquish their lead should Scudetto holders AC Milan beat Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.

The clash between Parma and Juventus has yet to be rescheduled.

Alessandro Del Piero bemoans postponement of Parma clash

The former Italy international has spent most of the season warming the bench

but coach Antonio Conte had told the forward that he would start at the Ennio Tardini.

c3media1414367immagineo.jpg

Feb 1, 2012

Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero has bemoaned his misfortune after being finally included in the Bianconeri's starting line-up only to see Tuesday's clash with Parma postponed.

The 37-year-old has spent most of the season warming the bench but Juve coach Antonio Conte had told the forward that he would start at the Ennio Tardini.

However, the game was then called off because of adverse weather conditions, much to the disappointment of Del Piero.

“Damn it, it had to be tonight when I was in the starting XI,” he wrote on Twitter. “I'll tell Conte he'll have to pick me when it is replayed!"

Del Piero’s team-mate Gianlugi Buffon could also see the funny side of the last-minute cancellation.

"Well, at least I didn't concede a goal tonight," the goalkeeper joked on his Twitter page.

Juventus currently lead Serie A by a single point but they will be displaced at the summit if AC Milan get anything out of their clash with Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Ghirardi: Fixture list needs care

c3media1414093immagineo.jpg

Feb 1, 2012

Parma's Tommaso Ghiradi has asked for more attention to go into planning the Serie A calendar, so as to best avoid games being hit by adverse weather.

The Ducali’s game against Juventus was called off with just an hour to go before kick-off on Tuesday night due to heavy snow, which was ruled as making the stadium unsafe to host the match. Juve’s fans had already started to enter the ground before the decision was made official.

Beppe Marotta commented that such a situation demonstrates the need for new stadiums in the country, whilst Antonio Conte lamented the fact that the Week 21 fixture could have been played earlier in the day, given that the weather was expected.

Ghiradi continued in a similar way, suggesting that more attention and common sense needs to go into managing the fixture list.

“The rules are clear that the area around the stadium should allow for it to be used and the referee must then verify this - clubs do not really count for anything.

“It is necessary to analyse the calendar more precisely, times need to be reviewed and when we have these [weather] predictions, the game can be moved well in advance. I spent an hour and a half on the highway to get to the stadium.”

The club President then referred back to the early-December clash between the Gialloblu and Palermo as another example of where the problem lies. That game was played at the Ennio Tardini in a thick blanket of fog.

“We have played at 8.45pm on a weekend when Catania played at 3pm - here it does not take long to realise that in December, the fog may reach Parma sooner than it does Catania.

“We must draw up the calendar with greater attention. Then, we also have to renovate stadiums.

“Ours is one of the best, if not modern, but the comparison does not hold with Juventus’ new ground.”

Ghiradi also passed brief comment on Sebastian Giovinco’s future. The playmaker is co-owned by Parma and Juventus, with a decision on his future due in the summer.

“There are still three to four months, it is cold, there is the snow, we will have time to think about it. What will be decisive in negotiations with Juventus will be the will of the player.”
