Juventus returned to the top of Serie A with a 2-1 victory over Inter at San Siro on Saturday night.

Goals from Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio either side of a Maicon thunderbolt ensured that the visitors maintained their unbeaten record in the league, and moved back ahead of AC Milan to the summit.

This fixture is always tense, particularly after the Nerazzurri spent the week claiming "if in doubt, referees whistle against us." Next month Juve are also expecting a result from the tribunal after trying to have the 2004-05 and 2005-06 titles restored. Julio Cesar, Diego Forlan, Thiago Motta, Walter Samuel, Andrea Ranocchia, Philippe Coutinho, Andrea Poli and Emiliano Viviano were out of action. Juve missed Emanuele Giaccherini, but Gigi Buffon recovered from a bruised shoulder to start.

The Inter curva unveiled a huge banner before kick-off that read: 'I don't steal the League and I've never been in Serie B...'

The Nerazzurri had a great chance after four minutes, as a free kick was knocked down for Esteban Cambiasso's volley that flashed across the face of goal.

However, it was Juventus who took the lead. Stephan Lichtsteiner got down the right and rolled across for Alessandro Matri, as Luca Castellazzi performed a save from point-blank range, but only into the path of Mirko Vucinic.

It was almost 2-0 moments later, as Matri sprung the offside trap and flashed his angled drive across the face of goal to skim the back post.

The Bianconeri went on another splendid counter-attack after Wesley Sneijder gave the ball away and Castellazzi had to smother at Matri's feet.

Maicon burst past Giorgio Chiellini, but Buffon did just enough to block him at the by-line. Javier Zanetti's effort was also charged down after Andrea Pirlo gave the ball away on the edge of his own box.

Mauro Zarate fought his way past Andrea Barzagli to fire wide of the near post.

The pressure paid off when Maicon scored a spectacular goal. He gathered from Sneijder's reverse pass on the right side of the box and went to cross, but instead smashed it under the bar from a tight angle to surprise Buffon, aided by a deflection.

It was nearly 2-1 to Inter, as Pazzini's bullet header beat Buffon to crack against the middle of the crossbar from Maicon's cross.

Instead Juventus restored their advantage moments later! Claudio Marchisio went through the middle and exchanged passes with Matri to pass it into the near bottom corner past Castellazzi's outstretched hand.

Marchisio went clear on goal and flicked the ball over the on-rushing Castellazzi, but the referee waved play on as the two collided.

Matri and Vucinic couldn't get their shots away, so it fell to Lichtsteiner to blast wide of the near post.

Luc Castaignos replaced Zarate for the second half. Giorgio Chiellini was booked for holding out an arm to block Pazzini and accidentally hitting him on the side of the head.

Bonucci charged down a Pazzini effort from a free kick, then Lichtsteiner did the same on a Sneijder snapshot, as Inter poured forward.

However, the Nerazzurri struggled with a Pirlo free kick and Vucinic prodded it straight at the goalkeeper from close range.

The tension escalated with Sneijder booked for dissent, then Dejan Stankovic played on with Vidal down injured so Pirlo took down Sneijder and was carded for that.

Sneijder drilled straight at Buffon and was then replaced by Ricky Alvarez so he could have an ice pack applied to his calf.

Marcelo Estigarribia caught Inter on the counter down the left flank and his angled drive was deflected just past the far post by Castellazzi's foot, although the referee only awarded a goal kick.

Pazzini volleyed well wide from an Alvarez assist, but Alessandro Del Piero scuffed off target when a header back sent him clear on goal.

Another Pazzini attempt was charged down in the box, but Inter could not find a way through.

Juventus retained their two-point advantage at the top of Serie A and piled even more misery on Claudio Ranieri's Inter Milan with a win at the San Siro tonight.

Mirko Vucinic put the Bianconeri in front in the 12th minute, but Maicon levelled for the hosts in the 28th minute.

Claudio Marchisio restored Juve's advantage in the 33rd minute and he was unlucky not to earn a penalty just before half-time.

Inter were unable to find a way back into the game and succumbed to their fifth defeat in nine games to risk dropping into the bottom three of Serie A this weekend.

Inter had two good early chances with Giampaolo Pazzini and Esteban Cambiasso going close in the first five minutes, but Juve took the lead with their first attack of the game in the 12th minute.

Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross was met by Alessandro Matri, whose shot was saved by the legs of Luca Castellazzi, but the ball fell to Vucinic, who smashed it into the roof of the net.

One minute later, Matri had the chance to make it two, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post with only Castellazzi to beat.

And Juve had three against two on their next attack a minute later, but Matri's shot was again saved by Castellazzi.

Inter did not seem too perturbed by the amount of chances they were conceding at the back as they kept pushing forwards, and their ambition was rewarded in the 28th minute when Maicon brought them level.

Juve failed to fully clear a corner and Wesley Sneijder sent the Brazilian back into the penalty area, where he shot powerfully into the roof of the net from an angle with a slight deflection off Leonardo Bonucci taking the ball past Gianluigi Buffon.

Pazzini flashed a header against the crossbar in the 31st minute, but the Inter defence was again breached two minutes later.

Marchisio played a one-two with Matri before curling a low shot just inside the right-hand post.

Marchisio broke through again in the 40th minute and he was hauled to the ground by Castellazzi after lifting the ball over him, but no penalty was awarded.

Inter had to attack in the second half, but they appeared to lack the energy and the belief to do so.

The best chances fell at the other end, with Vucinic shooting straight at Castellazzi in the 60th minute and Marcelo Estigarribia seeing his shot saved by the Inter goalkeeper's leg.

Substitute Alessandro Del Piero then missed the chance to put the result beyond doubt in the 87th minute, scuffing his shot wide of the post with only Castellazzi to beat.

Juventus' Mirko Vucinic has immediately switched his attention to the club's next Serie A match against Napoli after their 2-1 victory over Inter at San Siro on Saturday night sent them top of the league once more.

The Turin giants were triumphant at the home of their arch-rivals thanks to first-half goals from Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio, with Maicon's thunderbolt proving little more than a consolation.

But, speaking to Sky Sport immediately following the match, the Montenegrin stressed he had already put the result behind him as the Bianconeri look to keep up their league-leading pace.

"If we are strong we must also show it against Napoli," said the striker.

"Getting three points here and not winning against the Neapolitans would be a disappointment."

Juventus sit two points clear of AC Milan after nine games, but meet Walter Mazzarri's side next Sunday evening, kicking-off at 20.45CET.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte believes his side are continuing to improve in the wake of their 2-1 win over Inter at San Siro.

The Turin giants put in a fantastic away performance to ensure that they earned all three points against their bitter rivals courtesy of goals from Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio.

Conte's men returned to the top of the table as a result of the triumph, and he stated: "Tonight three important points arrived to put us in first in the standings. It is a great reward for the work and sacrifices of my men. We looked to do our best. I am content because it is not easy to come to San Siro and beat a side like Inter.

"It was an intense match, with great pressing and a little tiredness from both sides after three matches in eight days. We still lack a bit of cynicism: this game should have been put to rest earlier. We must continuously improve, to be more present and to be know how to rest with the ball."

Turning his attention to the Serie A match against Napoli next weekend, Conte stated that he is under no illusions how difficult the game will be.

He added: "It will be incredibly tough. They have an organisation that puts them amongst the favorites to win the Scudetto."

Inter coach Claudio Ranieri has praised his side's performance despite their 2-1 home loss against Juventus on Saturday evening.

The Turin outfit inflicted a fifth league defeat of the season on the Nerazzurri at San Siro, with Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio scoring either side of a Maicon strike in an open and entertaining encounter.

But despite the disappointing result, Ranieri has stated that he remains optimistic of a late title challenge.

"I am satisfied with the performance, especially in the first half," he told the press after the match. "They scored with the only two chances they had.

"We must not look at the table, because there are 84 points [sic] still available to gain. Surely it is better to win than to lose, but there are still many points to be won.

"Are Juventus Scudetto-worthy? Yes, the side is working well. But I have not given up. The game was equal. All in all, I did not see Juventus dominance."

The coach then turned his attention to the fixture against Lille at San Siro on Wednesday in the Champions League, with his side currently sitting atop Group B, while also defending his decision to substitute Mauro Zarate at half-time against Juve.

"I have injuries to deal with. The defeat must not have repercussions on a psychological level, because in sports one can either win or lose," added the coach.

"Zarate was well, I substituted him as a technical choice. I told him 'You do not deserve to go off, but I must help the squad on the wing.'"

Former Inter director Gabriele Oriali has said that the Milan giants are in a lot of trouble after their 2-1 home defeat to title rivals Juventus on Saturday evening in Serie A.

Goals from Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio with a Maicon strike sandwiched in-between gave the Turin club all three points as they returned to the top of the league table.

Inter have won only two of their opening nine domestic games, losing five in total, and Oriali is worried for the 2011 Coppa Italia winners.

"Tonight could've been the turning point of our campaign, but it wasn't the case" Oriali told reporters after the game. "Now we've got to worry because the table is a depressing sight."

Inter are currently 16th in Serie A and could be dragged into the relegation zone should results go against them on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri are in Champions League action on Wednesday evening when they entertain Lille at San Siro.

Inter captain Javier Zanetti maintained his side are still eager to clinch silverware after a home 2-1 defeat to Juventus.

A thunderous Maicon strike almost on the half-hour mark gave Inter some hope after they had found themselves on the back foot following a Mirko Vucinic goal, but Claudio Marchisio's cool finish meant Juventus got the better of the game.

The result puts even more pressure on the shoulders of Inter, who are now in 16th position, 11 points off the top of table, but Zanetti stressed that his side's motivation cannot be questioned.

"We have not lost our hunger, but in certain moments one does not understand what is keeping you from winning matches," he told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

"Now we have to think about the match against Lille and then the one against Genoa."

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon believes winning the Italian championship is a realistic possibility if the team can maintain their aggressive start to the season following a 2-1 win over Inter on Saturday.

Goals from Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio either side of a Maicon strike were enough for Juventus to take all three points from San Siro.

The result allowed Antonio Conte's men to maintain the pace at the top of the table, and Buffon says that they can lift the Scudetto if they replicate the level of performance shown in the Derby d'Italia.

"If we keep this aggression up for the rest of the season then we will win the league," Buffon told Mediaset. "If not, then we will go back to what we were [last season].

"Yesterday [saturday], we showed personality and rhythm. I just knew I could not be on the losing team on the night."

Juventus meet Napoli at the San Paolo next Sunday in Serie A.

Inter fans have made the headlines for all the wrong reasons with their behaviour during Saturday night's 2-1 Serie A loss against arch rivals Juventus.

The Nerazzurri faithful displayed a banner with the text "Acciaio scadente: nostalgia dell'Heysel" (translated: 'Poor quality iron - nostalgia for Heysel'), a reference to the Heysel Stadium disaster in Brussels, Belgium in 1985 where 39 Juventus fans tragically died after a wall collapsed before the start of the European Cup final between the Turin giants and Liverpool.

This in turn led to a five year ban for English clubs in Europe, and a number of Liverpool fans prosecuted for manslaughter.

The placard was allegedly a response to the news that the Turin authorities have opened an investigation into the structure of the recently opened Juventus Stadium.

It has not been the greatest week in football's bid to prove it has moved with the times. In Britain, the England captain has spent the last week fending off accusations of racism against another player, while Saturday night brought Inter fans' attempts to drag the game back into the gutter with a scandalous banner mocking the Heysel dead.

John Terry's clash with Anton Ferdinand has been all over the news since last Sunday's west London derby between QPR and Chelsea at Loftus Road. His apparent catcall of "you black c***" in the direction of Ferdinand – the brother of an England team-mate and supposed friend, no less – has resulted in a week of recriminations and denials which are likely to split dressing rooms once more.

Terry rightly remains innocent until proven guilty, and while it is hardly the first time his qualities as a morally upstanding member of the community have been called into question, this is by far the gravest accusation to be levelled at him. Judgements should be saved until an outcome has been determined, and it remains to be seen whether video evidence passed on by Sky to the FA provides any further clarity on what actually happened amid the claim and counter-claim of the past week.

But the very intimation that racism is still an issue on Premier League pitches has to be of huge concern to the authorities involved, particularly against the backdrop of the significant strides made by the 'Kick Racism Out of Football' campaign since its founding in 1993.

Now is not the time to be complacent about racists in the game, especially given the wave of condemnation which has come with the accusations. That needs to be used to drive home the message further regardless of the verdict in this case. If Terry is proven guilty, he should have the book thrown at him. His alleged behaviour has no place in society, let alone in multicultural Chelsea and England dressing rooms.

Just as the dust appeared to be settling on the Terry affair for a weekend at least, Saturday night's Derby d'Italia brought the latest chapter in the long-running battle between Inter and Juventus supporters. However, the home fans' banner mocking the 39 people who died at Heysel went way beyond friendly rivalry, dragging football back to a bygone age from which every single person in the world should be trying to steer it away.

The banner, reading 'Acciaio scadente: nostalgia dell'Heysel' (Poor quality steel – nostalgia for Heysel) was in relation to the recent news that there had been apparent concerns over the structural integrity of the new Juventus Stadium in Turin.

To mock opposing fans regarding results on the field or to make signs pertaining to the continued arguments over Calciopoli are one thing, but to use the deaths of 39 innocent people for supposed amusement is entirely another.

Last season there was talk that Tottenham fans arriving at San Siro for their Champions League clash with Inter would have flags and banners confiscated should they contain any religious symbols, yet this weekend the Nerazzurri followers were allowed into the ground with something which calls into question the depths some football fans are willing to go to in order to claim some sort of terrace victory.

That Juventus supporters responded with chants mocking the late Giacinto Facchetti – an Inter playing legend and club president – was neither big nor clever. That the Nerazzurri fans spent time thinking up the wording, spraying it onto a banner, and – presumably – going to great lengths to smuggle it into the stadium, is utterly deplorable.

Inter should be hit with massive fines; big enough to cause serious ructions, both for the actions of their fans and for the incompetence of their stewarding practices in allowing the banner to get past. If the sign was indeed checked outside, the very mention of Heysel should have caused alarm bells.

While European football's leading lights come together once more this week for another Champions League matchday, two of the top countries on the continent have much more serious issues to address. Failure to do so will result in bigger backward steps than kicking a football around can repair.
