Serie A Preview

Oct 25, 2011

Fiorentina coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has been given the full backing of club owner Andrea Della Valle ahead of tomorrow's Serie A trip to Juventus.

Last weekend's 2-2 home draw against Catania extended Fiorentina's winless run to four games and dropped the Viola to 10th in the standings.

Defeats at Juve and against Genoa on Sunday could prove costly for Mihajlovic, according to reports in Italy.

However, on suggestions Mihajlovic's job could be in jeopardy, Della Valle told giornalaccio rosa dello Sport: "Absolutely not.

"I have full confidence in Sinisa and he is not under threat.

"He is not at fault.

"I can understand the fans' disappointment but we have all the ingredients to do well.

"Now we must focus on the games against Juventus and Genoa and get as many points as possible in those two games.''

Fiorentina will welcome back striker Alberto Gilardino into their starting XI.

The Italy international, who played the final six minutes of Saturday's game after being out for five weeks with a knee injury, will partner Stevan Jovetic in Fiorentina's attack.

Juventus coach Antonio Conte was disappointed with his team's 2-2 result against Genoa on Saturday - their fourth draw in five games.

The Turin outfit were pegged back twice by Genoa and had to settle for a draw.

"We have to continue to grow,'' Conte said. "We lost two points against Genoa and we should have showed more focus.

"We need to keep working hard.''

Juve, who are unbeaten this season, are third in the standings, two points adrift of Serie A leaders Udinese.

The hosts are hoping to recover goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who missed the game against Genoa with a shoulder injury.

Should the Italy international fail in his bid to be fit, Marco Storari will take his place between the posts.

The visitors will be without midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, who serves a one-match ban.

Conte warning for Juventus

Oct 25, 2011

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has defended under-fire duo Milos Krasic and Giorgio Chiellini following Saturday's disappointing draw at home to Genoa in Serie A.

Juve led twice through a brace from Alessandro Matri, but were pegged back on each occasion by strikes from first Marco Rossi and then Andrea Caracciolo five minutes from time.

Krasic was unconvincing once more, while Chiellini was at fault in the build-up to both goals, but Conte says the two are "fundamental" to Juventus' hopes of success and claims he is responsible for getting the best out of the duo.

"A coach must get the maximum from his players, especially when they are going through a difficult moment, like Krasic and Chiellini," Conte said at a press conference ahead of Tuesday night's mouth-watering match against Fiorentina.

"They are two fundamental players and if we start to question two players like them, I will start to become anxious; it becomes a problem when we start to doubt players like Chiellini - for me he is a guarantee."

Conte also revealed that he will call on some psychology to get the best out of his stars, who remain unbeaten but have now drawn four of their last five Serie A fixtures to drop to third place.

"I must do a great job technically, tactically and also psychologically," he explained.

"I speak to some players more than I speak to my mother and father, depending on what is necessary."

One player unlikely to feature any time soon is goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who remains sidelined with a shoulder problem.

"The physiotherapy is ongoing," Conte advised.

"The medical team will make their evaluations, but he will tell me when he is ready."

Striker Fabio Quagliarella is ready to return, however, and could feature against Fiorentina on Tuesday.

Marchisio & Jovetic well priced to score

in Juventus versus Fiorentina contest

Serie A's tasty game tonight is a tough one to call, so, for value, we are delving into the goalscorer markets.

Oct 25, 2011

Match Odds: Juventus 1.70, Draw 3.50, Fiorentina 3.50 (Stan James)

Picking a winner in an clash between historic rivals Juventus and Fioretina is notoriously difficult. It is often better to focus on other markets, like goals or goalscorers.

Both clubs have scored in 12 of the last 14 meetings between the sides. We can expect goals, therefore the question of who will score them is one of interest.

As Juventus' top scorer this season, it's unsurprising to see rangy striker Alessandro Matri as favourite to open the scoring at 5.0. However, equal with him on three goals is midfielder Claudio Marchisio who represents very good value out at 7.0 to score first (3.0 any time).

Fiorentina's standout attacker is Montenegrin starlet Stevan Jovetic, who scored twice on his last appearance and is the visitors' leading scorer with four goals this season. Owing to the home side being big favourites, Jovetic is priced out at 8.0 to break the deadlock - something which he has done twice this season already.

Another nicely-priced candidate is Alessio Cerci, the Italian youngster who is firmly on Manchester City's radar, but is 9.0 to add to his season tally of three goals with the first of the night in Turin.

As far as outsiders go, Marcelo Estigarribia of Juventus is inexplicably priced outside Giorgio Chiellini and other defenders to get a goal. The Paraguayan got his big move on the back of an impressive Copa America and started for the Bianconeri against Genoa last time out. His price of 19.0 to score first, or 7.0 to score anytime, is far too generous given his ability in an advanced position.

Juve change for Viola

Oct 25, 2011

Juventus have changed system again for a 4-3-3, while Fiorentina focus on Juan Manuel Vargas and Stevan Jovetic.

The midweek round kicks off this evening at 19.45 UK time at the Juventus Stadium in Turin with one of the big grudge matches of Serie A football.

Gianluigi Buffon and Emanuele Giaccherini are still out injured, but Arturo Vidal has returned from his time on the treatment table.

Vidal is thrown into the line-up in a midfield role for the new 4-3-3 system, as Mirko Vucinic and Simone Pepe flank Alessandro Matri.

Fiorentina are in crisis at the moment with fans calling for Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic to be sacked.

Matri & Vucinic start for Juventus against Fiorentina

The two strikers get the nod, while Arturo Vidal returns to the starting XI.

However, the talking point is the exclusion of Milos Krasic, who fails to make the bench.

Alessandro Matri and Mirko Vucinic keep their places for Juventus as they start against Fiorentina in Tuesday night's Serie A clash.

Arturo Vidal returns to midfield after missing out in the 2-2 draw against Genoa.

Simone Pepe also starts for Antonio Conte's men in Turin, but Milos Krasic is not even on the bench.

Stevan Jovetic gets the nod for Fiorentina after he scored two against Catania at the weekend.

Here are the official confirmed line ups.

Juventus moved back to the top of the Serie A table with an impressive 2-1 win over rivals Fiorentina in Turin on Tuesday.

Goals from Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Matri either side of a Stevan Jovetic equaliser fired the Bianconeri to their first win in three matches.

The victory sends Antonio Conte's men one point clear of Udinese at the league summit, albeit temporarily, while maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

Spurred on by a boisterous and partisan home crowd - something that is becoming a regular feature of matches at their new home - Juventus stormed out of the traps intent on gaining an early advantage.

Juve ease past Fiorentina

Juventus dominated their match with Fiorentina, but only squeezed a 2-1 win after wasteful finishing.

c3media1363939immagineo.jpg

Oct 25, 2011

This was always one of the biggest grudge matches in Serie A and there was a lot at stake on this Tuesday night. The opener to the midweek round saw Juve fall off the top spot with one win from five games, even if they were still unbeaten, while Viola fans called for Sinisa Mihajlovic to be sacked after three points from the last four matches.

Arturo Vidal returned from injury to start in an adjusted tactical system and pink strip, though Gigi Buffon and Emanuele Giaccherini were sidelined and Milos Krasic sent to the stands. Fiorentina had Riccardo Montolivo suspended, joining the injured Per Kroldrup and Mattia Cassani. Alberto Gilardino was only fit for the bench, Houssine Kharja drafted in to midfield.

Simone Pepe tested Artur Boruc after three minutes, then the Polish goalkeeper palmed a Claudio Marchisio snapshot over the bar.

Pepe had a fantastic chance set up by Alessandro Matri's backheel flick, but horribly miscued when unmarked outside the box. Mirko Vucinic did much the same, then fired wide from the D.

Some horrible defending allowed Juventus to take the lead. The Fiorentina squad stood still as an Andrea Pirlo corner was whipped in for Vidal's effort and Leonardo Bonucci was undisturbed to pounce on Boruc's short save.

Matri volleyed well over from Vidal's cross in a very promising position, then Boruc sprinted off his line to charge down Pepe, who sprung the offside trap from a slide-rule pass.

Boruc smothered a deflected Vucinic attempt at the near post, while Matri came sliding in for Pepe's low cross, put out for a corner by Alessandro Gamberini's desperate intervention.

Vucinic was left unmarked to meet another corner, but didn't put enough power on the shot to trouble Boruc. The former Roma striker did get a good finish away after a give-and-go with Vidal, but the angled drive was flashed across the face of goal.

In first half stoppages, Andrea Barzagli had a strong run down the right and his cross was prodded into Boruc's arms by Matri.

Gilardino came on for the second half, switching to a 4-2-3-1 system, and within 60 seconds Marco Storari had been forced into his first save, as Jovetic headed a corner into the ground that was going under the bar. The team talk must've shaken the walls, as Fiorentina had a very different attitude.

Fiorentina made Juve pay for their wasteful first half finishing by drawing level. Gilardino got down the right and pulled back for Juan Manuel Vargas, who flicked it on for the Jovetic screamer from the D. It was the first goal the Viola have scored on their travels this season.

Juventus restored their advantage with Matri, though much of the credit must go to Pepe. The winger battled while surrounded by five Viola players to prod through a pass releasing Matri, who finished it off firmly.

Matri nearly got a second soon after, but his wonderful curler from the edge of the box brought an equally splendid flying save out of Boruc.

Juve ease to victory

Juventus recorded a 2-1 win over Fiorentina that failed to full reflect their domination.

Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Matri scored for the hosts either side of a Stevan Jovetic goal.

Oct 25, 2011

Alessandro Matri's winner sunk Fiorentina and sent Juventus one point clear at the top of Serie A.

The summer signing from Cagliari netted in the 65th minute to lift the hosts clear of Udinese.

Leonardo Bonucci opened the scoring for Juve in the 13th minute, but Stevan Jovetic levelled the scores in the 57th minute.

Fiorentina's winless streak is now five games and they dropped to 12th in the standings as a result of the defeat.

Viola goalkeeper Artur Boruc was quickly brought into the action when he made a good save to deny Simone Pepe in the seventh minute.

However, he failed to stop Bonucci's close-range effort six minutes later after he parried Claudio Marchisio's shot from the edge of the area, allowing the defender to poke the ball into the net.

Boruc redeemed himself with a couple of excellent saves as Juve continued to press, the best coming in the 38th minute when he dived to deny Mirko Vucinic's 20-yard strike.

Juve defender Andrea Barzagli almost doubled the home side's lead in first-half injury time, but once again the excellent Boruc saved the shot which took a huge deflection off Matri.

Alberto Gilardino headed well over as the visitors threatened in the early stages of the second half and they levelled in the 57th minute.

Gilardino raced down the right and cut the ball back for Juan Manuel Vargas, who laid it off for Jovetic to fire a shot into the bottom left corner from outside the area.

Giorgio Chiellini brought a save out of Boruc from an Andrea Pirlo corner before Juve restored their lead.

Simone Pepe set up Matri, who beat Boruc from close range.

The former Celtic keeper produced another good save to deny Matri before Pepe shot wastefully wide following a break from Arturo Vidal as the visitors continued to threaten.

Matri had a half-volley comfortably saved by Boruc before Gilardino almost snatched a point for Fiorentina in stoppage time only to fire a half-chance wide from inside the area.

Player Ratings

Goal.com analyses the performances of the players on show in this heated clash

from which the Bianconeri emerged triumphant and moved back to the top of Serie A.

3648679162.jpg1298771075.jpg

Oct 25, 2011

Juventus

Marco Storari 6.0 - Continued to deputise between the sticks in Buffon's injury-enforced absence. Made a decent save to deny Jovetic but could do little about his equaliser.

Leonardo Bonucci 7.0 - The 6ft 3 in centre-back scored the opener with striking instincts more attributed to a striker. Also defended well, typified by a brave block to thwart Behrami in the 79th minute.

Andrea Barzagli 6.0 - Partnered Bonucci in central defence for fourth consecutive game. Went about his business in a quiet but effective manner, especially in first half as he had almost nothing to do. Made his presence felt in an attacking sense with a swashbuckling run in first-half injury time.

Giorgio Chiellini 6.0 - Continued at left-back despite some less than impressive performances of late. Can't be faulted for effort, but was clumsy on the ball and especially ineffective when he got into advanced positions.

Stephan Lichtsteiner 6.5 - The flying Swiss right-back made an excellent start, getting forward to great effect and putting over several excellent crosses. Mihajlovic's half-time changes curbed his effectiveness in the second half, however.

Andrea Pirlo 6.5 - Occupied his trademark regista role in front of the defence, from where he helped his side totally dominant play in the first half. Wasn't quite as impressive as of late as several attempts to showboat failed to come off. It was his clever corner which led to the opening goal, though.

Claudio Marchisio 7.0 - Pirlo's presence has brought out the best in the 25-year-old, who has three goals this season, and this was particularly evident in the first half as he buzzed around the field probing at Fiorentina. Tested Boruc with long-range efforts in either half.

Arturo Vidal Pardo 7.0 - The Chilean returned to the starting line-up after missing out against Genoa through injury. He was his typically robust and energetic self in the centre of midield. His low shot was fumbled by Boruc and slotted home by Bonucci.

Simone Pepe 7.5 - Continued on the right-hand side. Can be frustratingly inconsistent, but that was not the case on Tuesday as he tormented Pasqual. Put over several inviting crosses and provided the assist for the winner with an excellent pass.

Mirko Vučinić 5.5 - The Montenegrin was pushed into a role wide on the left, from where he got into several dangerous positions. His finishing, however, invariably let him down. Looks low on confidence.

Alessandro Matri 7.5 - Retained his place as his side's attacking spearhead after bagging a brace there against Genoa. Took his tally for the season to four goals and scored his third in two games when he swept home the winner. Goal capped off a hard-working and effective display up front.

Alessandro Matri savours Juventus win over Fiorentina

The Italian forward is hoping the team's return to winning ways

continues after scoring the winner on Tuesday night.

Juventus striker Alessandro Matri has reflected on a match-winning performance over Fiorentina as it was his strike that clinched a 2-1 victory.

Leonardo Bonucci scored a rare goal for the Bianconeri as he gave them an early lead in Turin, but Stevan Jovetic's equaliser in the second half raised doubts about the capabilities of Juve to win the game.

Fiorentina's hopes of a comeback win were short-lived, though, as Matri snatched the eventual winner.

"My goal against Fiorentina has a different taste compared to the ones I scored against Genoa. We needed the win and we were able to get it tonight," Matri told Sky Sport Italia.

Antonio Conte said his side needed to be more ruthless in front of goal ahead of the game, and Matri has taken note.

"It's true what the coach said that we need to be more clinical up front because we dominated the first half and we should have closed out the game then," added the striker.

"In the second half we risked the game, but things turned out differently. We played really well today and if we continue like this then we will do important things in the league."

Juventus are back on top of Serie A, but their lead could be cut short on Wednesday when the rest of the challengers resume domestic matters.

Simone Pepe has warned his Juventus side that they need to be more clinical in front of goal after wasting numerous chances against Fiorentina.

Juve dominated the first 45 minutes against the Viola, but only went into the break 1-0 up. They were then made to fight for their 2-1 victory in the second period.

Viola back Mihajlovic for now

Fiorentina look destined to give Sinisa Mihajlovic the opportunity to save his job in the game against Genoa this weekend.

The tactician is under severe pressure at the Stadio Artemio Franchi after picking up just three points from the last 15 available.

A 2-1 loss at Juventus on Tuesday seems to have only made matters worse for the tactician, especially followng a dreadful opening 45 minutes at the Juventus Stadium.

Antonio Conte turns focus to Inter clash

following Juventus' 2-1 win over Fiorentina

The former midfielder was brief in his assessment of the win in Turin

as he focussed his lens on the big weekend fixture.

Antonio Conte admits Juventus' thoughts were already on Saturday's Serie A clash against Inter as soon as the referee blew his whistle in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Fiorentina.

Juventus were dominant against Sinisa Mihajlovic's men and goals from Leonardo Bonucci and Alessandro Matri either side of a Stevan Jovetic strike were enough to settle the match in Turin.

Conte reflected on his side's performance and said they need to be better prepared for the trip to San Siro.

"Inter are a great team and they have a strong squad, and so it is inevitable that my thoughts were on them," Conte told the press after the game against Fiorentina.

"In fact, at the end of the match I reminded my players about the Inter clash, that way we don't waste any time."

The team was fluid against Fiorentina, but some of the unchallenged command expected from the coach was not visible on the night.

"I wanted my players to keep up the good work after such a good first half," Conte added.

"There is some disappointment at having failed to take advantage of some of our chances, but we were able to win after Fiorentina came back into the game, and so my players deserve credit for their reaction."

Juventus moved back to the top of the table temporarily ahead of the remaining midweek fixtures in Serie A on Wednesday.

before the break, but was less satisfied with their second-half display.

Juventus winger Simone Pepe has expressed his delight with his side's display in the opening 45 minutes of their 2-1 Serie A win at home over Fiorentina on Tuesday evening.

Leonardo Bonucci gave the Bianconeri an early lead, but the hosts were unable to add another goal before the break and almost paid the price as Stevan Jovetic restored parity after the interval.

However, Alessandro Matri scored a second to fire the Turin giants to the full three points after being released by Pepe's pass, leaving the wideman pleased overall but with mixed emotions due to his side's poor start to the second period.

"We played a fantastic first half and it could have quite easily ended with us being two or three up, given the many opportunities that we had," Pepe was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"What we mustn

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has been backed by the club's general director Giuseppe Marotta after the trainer left Alessandro Del Piero and Milos Krasic out of his starting lineup against Fiorentina.

The Turin side beat the Florence outfit 2-1 on Tuesday night without the duo, and Marotta has moved to further justify the trainer's decisions.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci was over the moon with his side's 2-1 Serie A win against Fiorentina on Tuesday evening and feels the victory was the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming game against rivals Inter.

The centre-back gave the Old Lady a 1-0 lead before the break and eventually saw Alessandro Matri net the winner in the second half after Stevan Jovetic had equalised.

"Tonight we played a great game, a perfect first half in particular. Obviously we
