Barzagli: 'Juve covering all bases'

October 14, 2011

Andrea Barzagli sees a Juventus side preparing for all eventualities against his former side Chievo this weekend.

The 30-year-old centre-back spent a single season at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi eight seasons ago. Now at Juventus, Barzagli reflected on his breakthrough season with the Mussi Volanti, the danger his former side now pose and the subsequent level of preparation from the Bianconeri.

Andrea Barzagli: We must show no fear against Chievo

The Italy international admits title talk in Turin might be premature

but insists it's essential for the club to build on their swift start to the new campaign.

October 14, 2011

Andrea Barzagli has urged Juventus to continue their winning ways ahead of the Serie A encounter against Chievo on Sunday.

Antonio Conte's men are currently joint top of the league table and the Juve defender hopes it stays that way after 90 minutes.

"We must play Chievo without any fear so we can continue winning and give consistency to a season in which we have started very well," Barzagli told Sky Sport Italia.

Juventus were tipped as title candidates following the 2-0 win over AC Milan just before the international break, but the 30-year-old feels early predictions could be misleading.

"Juventus for the Scudetto? We are still at the start of the season, but it's always the case that papers start speaking about these things so early," reflected Barzagli.

"The important thing is to stay calm and we must prepare ourselves for each game. Then we will see what happens in the future."

The Turin-based giants have 11 points from five games this season and sit top alongside Udinese.

Antonio Conte feeling pressure of Scudetto challenger tags

The Turin outfit have started well, marching to the top of the Serie A standings

after five undefeated games, but the 42-year-old is keen to avoid overhyping his side.

Oct 15, 2011

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has stated that pressure to win the Serie A title is normal at the club, but has moved to keep expectations in check.

The Turin team have moved to the top of the standings after an unbeaten start to the campaign, having amassed 11 points from their first five games.

The 42-year-old is glad to have started strongly, but has admitted that this has increased the supporters' belief that they can lift the Scudetto crown.

"Are we are in the race for the Scudetto? When you're Juventus [you] must live with pressure, stress and victory. For us it is the norm," he told Tuttosport.

"We have played five games, the fact that [we have] had a good start has helped us grow in self-esteem and confidence."

Conte's team take on Chievo on Sunday, and the manager feels it will be a difficult fixture.

"We have watched all Chievo's matches, but we know how to play against them. We go there to get three points, we must not leave the field with any regrets," he stated.

"The sure thing, though, is that I'm lucky to have players that give me the chance to have two options of play, and then depending on various factors, I can take advantage of a situation."

The league leaders will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season

against a Flying Donkeys team that could move level on points with their opponents if they win.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Chievo (4-3-1-2): Sorrentino; Sardo, Morero, Cesar, Jokic; Bradley, Rigoni, Hetemaj; Cruzado; Pellissier, Moscardelli

Juventus (4-2-4): Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Pirlo, Marchisio; Krasic, Del Piero, Vucinic, Pepe

Chievo coach Domenico Di Carlo is expected to go with the same starting XI that drew 0-0 with Cesena in their last fixture before the international break after the players who represented their countries - Alberto Paloschi (Italy Under-21), Bojan Jokic and Bostjan Cesar (both Slovenia), Kamil Vacek (Czech Republic), Rinaldo Cruzado (Peru) and Michael Bradley (USA) - were all given a clean bill of health.

The Verona-based side's only doubt is veteran Brazilian midfielder Luciano, who is still struggling with an injury to his right thigh muscle.

Antonio Conte, on the other hand, is likely to make tweaks to both his personnel and his formation. After utilising a 4-1-4-1 formation in the 2-0 victory over AC Milan, the Bianconeri boss looks set to revert to his trademark 4-2-4 formation, with Alessandro Del Piero replacing Arturo Vidal in the side and partnering Mirko Vucinic in attack.

The coach has also received positive news on the injury front in that Claudio Marchisio has shaken off a sprain suffered on international duty. The in-form midfielder fired Italy into an early lead against Serbia but had to be replaced on the 70-minute mark due to the knock. However, he has since said:

Chievo Verona v Juventus: Preview

Oct 15, 2011

Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has urged his team-mates to focus on consistency when they make the trip to Verona to face Chievo tomorrow.

Antonio Conte's side are coming off a morale boosting victory over AC Milan in the last round.

The 2-0 triumph in Turin lifted Juve to the top of Serie A, level on 11 points with Udinese after five games.

"We overcame an important test against Milan,'' Lichtsteiner said to www.juventus.it.

"It was an important victory for our morale but especially because we handed a convincing performance.

"That game allowed us to understand our true potential.

"But the tests are never ending in Serie A and now we must repeat that performance otherwise the victory against Milan would have served for nothing.

"The game in Verona against Chievo is an opportunity for us to show that we can play always with the same intensity that we displayed against Milan.''

Juve will not take Chievo lightly with the Flying Donkeys having collected seven points from a possible nine in their last three games.

Moreover, Chievo, who are eighth in the standings, twice held Juventus to a draw last term and are determined to end the Bianconeri's unbeaten run this season.

"This is the strongest Chievo I have ever trained,'' Chievo coach Domenico Di Carlo said. "Many players go on the bench who are potentially first choice picks and we can still improve a great deal.

"I tell my players the same thing before every game. We work all week to win, now we're going on to the pitch to achieve it.''

Di Carlo will have all of his players available for Sunday's game at the Marcantonio Bentegodi stadium.

AC Milan & Juventus Saturday's big Serie A

winners as Napoli & Inter slip up again

With the to-and-fro nature of the fledgling season continuing, the champions got back

on track while other title contenders were taking backward steps.

Oct 16, 2011

With the rain pouring down on Sicily and the cold enveloping Milan and Naples, the reminders of a long winter to come were plentiful as Serie A football resumed after the international break. But whereas AC Milan welcomed the seasonal change with a convincing home win, Napoli missed a great chance to go top of the league. Meanwhile, things just get worse for Inter.

Antonio Conte's side fail to break down stubborn hosts

The Turin side managed to maintain their unbeaten run, but things could have been

different if not for a questionable decision from referee Andrea De Marco.

c3media1358549immaginet.jpg

Oct 16, 2011

Chievo held Serie A leaders Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Verona on Sunday afternoon - and could even have beaten Antonio Conte's men but for a controversial call from referee Andrea De Marco.

The whistler broke Flying Donkey hearts when he ruled out a Cyril Thereau strike after adjudging the Frenchman to have fouled Andrea Pirlo in the build up to the 'goal'.

Antonio Conte's men started the match brightly and looked the more dangerous of the two sides.

In the third minute, the in-form Claudio Marchisio tried to find Mirko Vucinic in the box only for Stefano Sorrentino to claim the ball and clear the danger.

Then, six minutes later, the home side managed to ruffle a few Juve feathers when Sergio Pellissier tested Gianluigi Buffon with a free-kick from distance, which the Italy international failed to deal with at the first attempt.

The game's controversial moment arrived on the 20-minute mark when Thereau found the net for the hosts but saw his effort disallowed after the official had spotted a questionable foul on Pirlo.

And to make matters worse, the striker was also booked for putting the ball away after the whistle had gone.

Afterwards the game's pace dropped and with no further chances created, the sides went into the half-time break level at 0-0.

The game opened up in the second half, however, and Marchisio almost put the visitors ahead with a powerful drive from the edge of box, before substitute Emanuele Giaccherini went close to grabbing his first goal for the Bianconeri with another thunderbolt.

The visitors were now starting to control the game, and, with 20 minutes to go, Alessandro Del Piero, who had just replaced Marchisio, struck the woodwork with a powerful header after a great cross from Simone Pepe.

Then, minutes later, the hosts had a decent penalty shout waved away by the official after Pellissier was brought down by Giorgio Chiellini.

In the end, neither side managed to find the goal need to break the deadlock. However, the result ensures that Juventus keep their place at the top of the table with Udinese also failing to win this week.

The Old Lady will be looking to get back to winning ways at home to Genoa next weekend, while Chievo, who will be pleased to taken a point against the Serie A leaders, will hope to continue their impressive start to the season away to Inter.

Juve held in Verona

c3media1358653immagineo.jpg

Oct 16, 2011

Juventus kept hold of the top spot despite a disappointing draw in Verona, as Alessandro Del Piero hit the woodwork and performed a goalline clearance.

Joint leaders Juve faced a tricky trip to the Bentegodi, where Napoli and Genoa had already fallen this season. Both Coaches had a full squad to choose from, so Antonio Conte went for the 4-1-4-1 system with Mirko Vicinic the lone striker.

The Bianconeri had a great record in Verona, winning six, drawing two and losing just once in all competition. The lone defeat was 1-0 in January 2010, but many of their fans travelled here for the match, so it felt like a Juventus home game.

Juve started brightly and aggressively, but Gigi Buffon fumbled a powerful Sergio Pellissier free kick and was fortunate to get the ball back under control.

Cyril Thereau robbed Andrea Pirlo - according to the referee with the aid of a shove - and ran into the box to score, but was only booked for his trouble. More problems for Chievo, who lost Gennaro Sardo to a muscular injury.

Arturo Vidal had penalty appeals for a shirt-tug, though the linesman had also raised his flag for an offside position just after that incident.

Claudio Marchisio scored a brace against Milan and tried to go for goal again with a fierce strike from distance that skimmed the upright to Stefano Sorrentino's right.

Emanuele Giaccherini replaced the ineffective Milos Krasic and almost immediately fired off target.

Alessandro Del Piero replaced Marchisio as Juventus tried to win it in the final stages. The captain had their best chance of the game so far, allowed a free header on Simone Pepe's cross that smacked against the frame of the goal from six yards.

Chievo had penalty appeals for a tussle between Giorgio Chiellini and Pellissier.

Sorrentino flew to palm a powerful Pepe snapshot out of the top corner, but Giaccherini picked up another injury and allowed Marcelo Estigarribia his Serie A debut.

Chievo went very close to breaking the deadlock on 84 minutes when Buffon didn't deal with a corner, but the goalline clearance from Del Piero scrambled away Pellissier's touch.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chievo: Sorrentino; Sardo (Frey 20), Morero (Mandelli 69), Cesar, Jokic; Bradley, Rigoni, Hetemaj; Sammarco (Cruzado 60); Thereau, Pellissier

Juventus: Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Pirlo; Krasic (Giaccherini 56) (Estigarribia 80), Vidal, Marchisio (Del Piero 70), Pepe; Vucinic

Juve hold on to top spot

4173708437.jpg

Oct 16, 2011

Chievo proved once again to be Juventus' bogey side as they held the Bianconeri to a goalless draw at the Stadio Bentegodi in this Serie A clash.

Juve coach Antonio Conte had said on the eve of the game that this would be a real test of his side's title aspirations since they have always found it tough against the Flying Donkeys in the past, and they struggled once again in Verona.

Alessandro Del Piero hit the post, but that was as close as the league leaders came on a frustrating afternoon.

Chievo striker Sergio Pellissier provided the first moment of danger in the 10th minute with a direct free-kick through the Juve wall which Gianluigi Buffon was able to grasp at the second attempt.

Cyril Thereau put the ball in the back of the net minutes later, but the referee's whistle had long since gone for an apparent foul by the Chievo striker on Andrea Pirlo, from whom he stole the ball in midfield.

Juve's first attempt on goal arrived in the 51st minute when Claudio Marchisio flashed a 20-yard shot across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

In the 73rd minute, Del Piero headed Simone Pepe's cross against the outside of the post with practically his first touch of the game after coming on as a substitute.

Del Piero's arrival seemed to give Juve the lift they needed and Pepe's switch from the left wing to the right, where Milos Krasic had disappointed, also seemed to have helped.

He tested Stefano Sorrentino with a curling left-footed shot from 25 yards as the Bianconeri started to attack with more insistence.

Del Piero made a decisive intervention at the other end of the field with a goal-line clearance as a combination of Pellissier and Stephan Lichtsteiner sent a Michael Bradley corner towards the Juve goal.

The Juve striker then went close again at the other end, volleying wide with the last real chance of the game.

Player Ratings

Goal.com rates the performers as Juve fail to break down

the resolute home side and are forced to settle for a point.

c3media1358705immagineo.jpg

Oct 16, 2011

Chievo

Stefano Sorrentino 6.5 - A very solid game from the shot-stopper, who helped his side earn a respectable point. He was always alert and made a great save from Pepe late in the second half.

Bostjan Cesar 6.0 - One of the two Chievo defenders to last the entire match. Did a solid if unconventional job of keeping the Juventus attack from offering much in his area of the pitch.

Santiago Morero 6.5 - A very solid game from the Argentine before succumbing to injury. His caution shouldn't overshadow what was a dominant, if quite physical, display, epitomised by a fantastic slide tackle to cut out Chiellini's pass to Vucinic.

Bojan Jokic 6.0 - Had an impressive opening spell to the match, including a great clearance from a dangerous Pepe cross. Gave away many fouls as the match wore on, however.

Gennaro Sardo 6.0 - Unfortunate to have to leave the pitch inside 20 minutes due to injury. Made one poor challenge on Vidal just before coming off.

Luca Rigoni 7.0 - One of the more anonymous men on the pitch. Did an unspectacular but effective job, flooding the midfield and harassing Andrea Pirlo, stopping him from impressing his influence on the game.

Paolo Sammarco 6.0 - Another midfield workhorse who prevented Juve from playing as they wanted, especially in the first half. Yellow carded towards the end for a rash challenge.

Perparim Hetemaj 6.5 - Incredibly lively and one of Chievo's standout players. Worked tirelessly to press forward whenever his side had possession and illustrated individual flair whenever possible.

Michael Bradley 6.0 - A mixed game from the American. Did a solid job taking corners and free-kicks, but gave away far too many fouls and was duly booked. Needs more time to adjust to Italy tactically.

Sergio Pellissier 6.5 - Did everything he could to get Chievo on the scoresheet, but ultimately could not repeat his heroics from the same fixture last season. Could have had a penalty midway through the match after a challenge with Chiellini in the box.

Cyril Thereau 6.0 - Notable for his fouls and poor passing with the exception of his booking, after nicking the ball from Pirlo in a great area.

De Laurentiis sees Juve bonus

Oct 17, 2011

Juventus have an advantage in the Scudetto race, Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has suggested.

Juve and Udinese currently lead the standings with 12 points after they both drew at the weekend, while the Azzurri are two points behind following a shock 2-1 loss at home to Parma.

Nevertheless, De Laurentiis seems to have accepted the defeat given that the club are not used to fighting for the title and the European Cup.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has confirmed that there was negotiation with Zenit St. Petersburg during the summer transfer window for a prospective move to Russia.

The 24-year-old joined the Turin giants from Bari in the summer of 2010 and featured in 34 Serie A games for them in the 2010-11 campaign with mixed results, as the former Italian champions finished seventh in Serie A.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio believes his side can win the Serie A title following their impressive start to the season.

The Turin giants have begun life under Antonio Conte in impressive fashion, topping the domestic table after six games with Marchisio aiding his side's cause with three goals to date.

Speaking in the wake of the 0-0 draw with Chievo on Sunday, Marchisio stated that despite the disappointing result, he believes that Juve can go all the way this season.

"We are top and we are thinking of the Scudetto, but for this reason these opportunities must be exploited," he told reporters.

"We have two home games coming up and we must use them to break away from the pack.

"It is true that against the provincial teams it is more complicated to play our game and to score."

Conte's men will play host to Genoa at the Juventus Stadium on Saturday.
