Lazzari sees Fiorentina potential

Mar 12, 2012

Andrea Lazzari believes Fiorentina have been playing well despite recent results and sees next weekend’s clash with Juventus as an opportunity to prove so.

The Viola have managed just one win from their last six played, which coupled with other results, has seen them drop four places in the table to 15th and the 11-point advantage over the relegation zone cut to seven.

However, midfielder Lazzari believes that the team are progressing, but that their struggles to find the back of the net are affecting things.

“The play is there,” the 27-year-old insisted on Monday.

“At Catania we have had some great chances but unfortunately we could not turn them into goals.

“Hopefully against Juventus we will be able to create as much again, but the result will be different.”

The former Cagliari midfielder also took time to comment on Juve’s decision to implement a media blackout this week, after their 0-0 draw with Genoa at the weekend.

“Let’s say that it is part of the game - we have seen that Parma have also had some doubtful penalty appeals after a week of complaining.

“We must not think of this, we need to only look at the game, we know that Juventus are a team that puts so much intensity into each game, we must be careful about this.”

Juventus receive Chiellini boost

Mar 13, 2012

Defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Martin Caceres should both be available for Juventus’ trip to Fiorentina on Saturday night.

Chiellini has been out of action since picking up a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Chievo Verona on March 3.

The Italian international is expected to return to training this week and be ready to face his former club at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Caceres picked up a slight knee twist in the 0-0 draw at Genoa on Sunday afternoon, but medics are confident the issue isn’t too serious.

The Old Lady will also have stopper Leonardo Bonucci available again after he was suspended for the last round of Serie A action.

Andrea Barzagli remains sidelined with a calf problem and he’s thought to be two weeks away from returning to full action.

Fiorentina 'victims' of Juve?

Mar 13, 2012

Fiorentina have warned they “don’t want to become victims” of Juventus complaints against referees when they face off on Saturday.

Juve have called a media silence in protest at refereeing errors, creating a tense atmosphere ahead of this weekend’s trip to Florence.

“This is the second time this season we’ve faced a team that has complained about previous refereeing performances,” said general manager Sandro Mencucci.

“We are not victims and we don’t want to become victims. The Italian officials are well-prepared, but we don’t want to see anyone psychologically conditioned by these complaints.”

Fiorentina have their own problems to contend with, as Amauri is still looking for his first goal since joining from Juve in January and Stevan Jovetic is unlikely to be fit in time.

“Jovetic is working hard to recover and we’ll see if he can take part in training. He’ll be with us for a long time and if he’s not on the field Saturday, then we’ll see him on many other occasions.

“As for Amauri, usually players tend to score against their old clubs. Here’s hoping this time it’s his go.”

Caceres could miss Juventus' trip to Fiorentina

The Uruguay international, who rejoined the Bianconeri on loan in January,

picked up a minor knee injury in Sunday's 0-0 draw with Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris.

Mar 13, 2012

Juventus could be forced to make do without the services of Martin Caceres for this weekend's Serie A clash with Fiorentina.

The 24-year-old, who rejoined the Bianconeri on loan from Sevilla during the January transfer window, suffered a knee injury in last Sunday's 0-0 draw with Genoa.

According to Tuttosport, the Old Lady are optimistic that Caceres will recover in time to face the Viola at the Artemio Franci.

Juve will be boosted by the fact that Leonardo Bonucci is available for selection again after serving a one-game suspension, while Giorgio Chiellini is also poised to return after recovering from a calf problem. However, Andrea Barzagli remains doubtful for the clash against the Viola.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport also claims that Fiorentina are sweating on the fitness of star forward Stevan Jovetic for the game on Saturday.

The Montenegrin is reportedly still struggling with the muscular problem he sustained in the 2-0 win over Cesena on March 4, and a decision will not be taken on his participation until Friday.

Fiorentina's clash with rivals Juventus kicks off at the Artemio Franchi at 20:45CET on Saturday.

Fiorentina last won with Batigol

Mar 14, 2012

Fiorentina will go into Saturday’s game against Juventus in the knowledge that they haven’t beaten them at home in Serie A since 1998.

Gabriel Batistuta scored the only goal of the game back in December of that year when the Viola were bossed by Giovanni Trapattoni and Juve were coached by Marcello Lippi.

Current Juve tactician Antonio Conte was in the losing side on that afternoon at the Stadio Franchi.

Since that home win, there have been six draws and three wins for the Bianconeri – a 3-1 and two 2-1 victories.

Fiorentina have won three of their last four home games in Serie A, while Juve have drawn their last four ties on their travels.

Juventus last tasted victory on the road when they defeated Atalanta 2-0 on 22 January.

Agnelli urges Juventus to dig deep for title

Mar 15, 2012

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli is encouraging his team to dig deep as it bids to return to winning ways, starting with a trip to Fiorentina on Saturday.

Juventus again felt aggrieved by refereeing decisions in last weekend's goalless draw at Genoa and a media blackout was imposed in the immediate aftermath in protest.

Agnelli says that with 11 matches still to play, the players "have the chance to do something prestigious." He also said "we knew that bringing success back to Juventus would want a huge effort."

Second-place Juventus remains the only team unbeaten this season but too many draws has seen it slip four points behind Serie A leader and defending champion AC Milan, which visits Parma earlier in the day.

Old boys hold key to Juventus pursuit of Milan

Mar 15, 2012

Juventus hope former forward Amauri does not suddenly find his form this weekend and further curtail their Serie A title bid while another ex could boost their chances if Sebastian Giovinco downs leaders AC Milan.

Brazil-born Amauri signed for Juventus for 22 million euros from Palermo in 2008 but after a promising start his career nosedived and he now plays for struggling Fiorentina, who host Juve on Saturday.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli gave Amauri his international debut in 2010 but it turned out to be his only cap and the 31-year-old's last goal was on loan at Parma last April.

"Amauri has promised me his first goal for Fiorentina this Saturday," the Florence club's chief executive Sandro Mencucci told reporters.

Juve, who have slipped four points behind champions Milan after drawing three straight matches, will think it is just their recent luck if Amauri breaks his drought against them.

Still, to many Juve fans the fact they are in a title race after several seasons of woe following their 2006 match-fixing demotion is progress enough.

President Andrea Agnelli backed coach Antonio Conte this week for helping return the Turin club, the most successful Italian side domestically, to the upper echelons of the game.

"The manager and his players are enjoying a truly commendable season" he told reporters.

"They know that there are 11 championship games to go and possibly another two in the Coppa Italia, they're aware that there's the possibility to obtain prestigious results so we'll be perfectly calm in trying to reach our targets."

Juventus digs deep for title

Mar 15, 2012

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli is encouraging his team to dig deep as it bids to return to winning ways, starting with a trip to Fiorentina on Saturday.

Juventus again felt aggrieved by refereeing decisions in last weekend's goalless draw at Genoa and a media blackout was imposed in the immediate aftermath in protest.

"We're still fighting on two fronts. A lot of credit has to be given to the technical staff, which has built a competitive squad, and to the coach and his boys, who are having a truly great season," Agnelli said.

"They know that there's 11 matches left in the league and possibly another two in the Italian Cup, and that they have the chance to do something prestigious. We want maximum calm to try to reach those aims that we set at the start of the year.

"We knew that bringing success back to Juventus would require a huge effort. That's what we're doing, and we have realised we have to be able to fight against everything and against everyone in the knowledge that our strength is enough to get results."

Second-place Juventus remains the only team unbeaten this season but too many draws have left it four points behind Serie A leader and defending champion AC Milan, which visits Parma earlier in the day.

Juventus has drawn six of its past seven league games and now has more draws (14) than wins (13).

Fiorentina has lost four of its past six games to slip to 14th, but Juventus will be wary of former striker Amauri's desire for revenge.

The Brazilian's time in Turin ended in a bitter divorce, with him moving in January to Fiorentina. Amauri had been left out of the squad since returning from a loan spell at Parma.

Amauri has yet to score for Fiorentina and will be keen to mark his first goal against his old club.

Juventus wanted me, says Behrami

Mar 16, 2012

Fiorentina’s Valon Behrami has admitted that he could have joined Juventus in January ahead of Saturday’s clash at the Franchi.

The Swiss international was one of a number of midfielders to have been targeted by the Old Lady at the start of 2012, before they opted for Atalanta’s Simone Padoin.

“There was the possibility of a move to Juve,” the former Lazio player told Tuttosport on Friday. “Fiorentina, however, wouldn’t consider my sale and I wanted to stay.

“I believe in the Viola project and it is pleasing to know that the club have faith in me.”

Behrami is a doubt for tomorrow’s Serie A game, but he’s desperate to play and leave his name on the scoresheet.

“Scoring against Juventus would be the maximum,” he continued. “I would invent a goal celebration if that happened.”

Juve are desperate to get back to winning ways after drawing their last three games in Serie A – thus allowing Milan to go four points clear.

“They’ll want to win, but we are charged up,” Behrami continued. “We have to demonstrate that we are not that poor as a team and we have to give the fans the satisfaction that they deserve.”

Amauri takes swipe at Juventus

Mar 16, 2012

Amauri has made it clear that he will celebrate should he score for Fiorentina against former club Juventus.

The Brazilian striker ended an unhappy spell with the Turin giants in January when he signed for the Viola on a six-month deal.

He’s yet to ripple the net for his new club, but he has his eyes set on proving a point to the Old Lady of Italian football tomorrow.

“If I score then I’ll do a lap of the stadium,” the Italian international explained to the giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

Amauri, who returned to Juve in the summer after a loan stint at Parma, didn’t play a single minute for the Bianconeri this term after he rejected a move away from the club.

However, he’s not blamed his lack of use on boss Antonio Conte.

“I spoke with Conte on two occasions and he never told me that I wasn’t part of the project,” he explained.

“He told me that there were other players ahead of me, but he said that I had qualities and that I would be at the disposal of the team.

“I was OK with that, but at the end of the day he didn’t count. I was left out because that was the decision of the club.”

Juve boss on Milan, refs and Viola

Mar 16, 2012

After days of silence, Juventus returned to speaking ways on Friday as boss Antonio Conte talked on the eve of the Fiorentina game.

The Old Lady had imposed a silenzio stampa following the 0-0 draw at Genoa as a protest to the number of refereeing decisions which they claim have gone against them this season.

And Conte, who was banned from the touchline last weekend, thinks more people should refrain from making statements.

“A few days ago I read an interview in which Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri said that we must all keep quiet,” he stated.

“All of us here did just that, but he’s the one who just keeps on talking.

“Seeing as Allegri keeps talking about Juve, we’ll authorise him to do that without the need for him to ask permission from our director general Beppe Marotta...”

Another talking point going into the Viola clash is the decision to appoint Mauro Bergonzi as referee, the man who was fourth official when Conte was sent-off in Bologna-Juventus.

“He’s a good ref, but it is inevitable that this decision is unique. I don’t know if this was the best move, we’ll have to wait until the end of the game.

“We won’t be commenting on the performance of the referee though.”

Turning to his team selections, the Coach confirmed that Leonardo Bonucci and Arturo Vidal would be named in the squad despite an alleged incident at a nightclub last weekend.

However, it is unclear whether Giorgio Chiellini will be risked after he was struck down by a calf problem.

“I still want to evaluate his condition over today and tomorrow,” the tactician noted. “I’ll obviously speak with him a lot, also because the championship won’t end tomorrow.”

Juve’s other problems are in attack where the club’s strikers have contributed just 16 League goals this term.

“We have a lot of central strikers. In a 4-3-3, if we are without Mirko Vucinic and Simone Pepe, then things get difficult. The others don’t adapt too well to the wings.

“It is inevitable that whichever centre-forward I chose, I will be asked why another didn’t play if he doesn’t score…”

Facing the Old Lady tomorrow with be enigmatic striker Amauri, the Brazilian who has a point to prove after leaving Turin in January.

“He knows perfectly well how things went, I know what I said and what I did. Amauri knows that I can look him in the eye.

“It’s the game of the season for Fiorentina tomorrow and that should please us.”

Juve will begin the Florence clash after Milan’s game at Parma has already come to an end. The Rossoneri are currently four points clear of the Bianconeri.

Rossi after 'perfect game’

Mar 16, 2012

Delio Rossi insists that his Fiorentina players will try to forget about their current League status so as to perform well against Juventus.

The Viola welcome the unbeaten and title-challenging Bianconeri to Florence on Saturday evening with just one win collected from the last six played, in what has been a miserable campaign.

Rossi, who replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic earlier in the term, recognises that the club’s energy must change when welcoming one of its fiercest rivals this weekend.

“The challenge with Juventus goes beyond the League standings - we need a perfect game,” the tactician declared.

“If we can play without thinking too much of our League position, we can then take risks. I’ve always said that our season is going to be a particular one, but even so, tomorrow’s game is a different story.”

Earlier this week, general manager Sandro Mencucci warned that Fiorentina do not want to become ‘victims’ of Juve’s recent protests against the standard of officiating.

However, Rossi refused to be drawn into the rhetoric, instead turning focus to the respect he has for Saturday’s adversary Antonio Conte.

“I know about these situations but I am a football Coach and I have to take care of the field. To these things we think about now - I cannot give an opinion on this issue, there should be no alibis for the team.

“Conte had an incredible playing career and it shows that Juventus is his greatest ambition - he has worked hard and done well to earn the big chance he now has.

“It is one that he has also not received any gifts during. Juve for the Scudetto? Yes, just look at the transfer market to explain why.”

Jo Jo a no no for Juve

Mar 16, 2012

Stevan Jovetic has lost out on the race to be fit for Saturday’s encounter with Juventus, but Fiorentina are able to call up Valon Behrami.

The Viola, sat in 15th in the table and seven points off the relegation zone, will go into Saturday’s clash without Montenegrin attacker Jovetic. The 22-year-old was a doubt all week to make the tie, in light of a muscle strain picked up almost two weeks ago at home to Cesena.

Swiss midfielder Behrami, who claimed this week that Juventus tried to sign him in January, is included in the squad, after shaking off similar concerns over his fitness.

Fiorentina squad to face Juventus: Acosty, Amauri, Behrami, Boruc, Cassani, Cerci, De Silvestri, Gamberini, Kharja, Lazzari, Marchionni, Montolivo, Nastasic, Natali, Neto, Olivera, Pasqual, Romulo, Salifu, Vargas.

Chiellini back for Fiorentina

Mar 16, 2012

Giorgio Chiellini has been named by Antonio Conte in a strong matchday squad to face Fiorentina this weekend.

The Turin side, currently trailing League leaders Milan in the table by four points, travel to Florence with Chiellini back in their ranks after a recent calf injury. Leonardo Bonucci is also back for the defence after serving a one-game ban last weekend.

Andrea Barzagli is the only notable first-team absentee, as he is still sidelined with a more severe calf strain than Chiellini.

Juventus squad to face Fiorentina: 1 Buffon; 3 Chiellini; 4 Caceres; 7 Pepe; 8 Marchisio; 10 Del Piero; 11 De Ceglie; 13 Manninger; 14 Vucinic; 17 Elia; 18 Quagliarella; 19 Bonucci; 20 Padoin; 21 Pirlo; 22 Vidal; 23 Borriello; 24 Giaccherini; 26 Lichtsteiner; 27 Krasic; 28 Estigarribia; 30 Storari; 32 Matri; 34 Marrone.

Amauri

The Italo-Brazilian endured a nightmare spell in Turin after failing to justify his €22.8 million transfer fee, and has not pulled up any trees since moving to Fiorentina in January. Nevertheless, the powerful hitman is sure to be pumped up for the occasion, and will hope to exert at least a degree of revenge on his former employers.

Alessandro Matri

It really is set to be the tale of two misfiring strikers when the duo grace the Artemio Franchi on Saturday, but Matri has arguably even more reason to put in a noteworthy shift. Despite a prolific start to the campaign, the ex-Cagliari star has netted just once since the end of January, forcing Conte to look towards the likes Marco Borriello and Fabio Quagliarella, both whom haven't fared much better. He will hope to find his shooting boots once more against Fiorentina.

Prediction

This one has all the makings of an extremely edgy affair, with both sides struggling to register goals of late, but Juventus should nick all three points in the tightest of fashions and resurrect their faltering Scudetto tilt.
